Senior now, graduating soon, figured i'd give my two cents. I've had some great teachers, Mr. Lang, Ms. Tucker, Mr. Crowl, Mr. Temple, Mr. Twietmeyer, Ms. Foster... but the ones that made a real impact were the "bad" teachers. Ms. Faria, Spanish teacher, awful woman. She acts entitled, as if students are sort of peasant class citizens and she's the queen of the school. Constant rude remarks, regarding students' intelligence, appearance, etc. All around childish. My final complaint goes out to NC-943, riverside's own JROTC unit. There's one thing they get right in regards to the government and military, corruption. Favoritism is rampant under Sergeant Mitchell's reign, he sees to it that his favorite "cadets" are promoted, given prestigious awards (even if they don't deserve them), given staff positions even if not qualified, and otherwise babied throughout their stay in the Corp. The only other way to get promoted into a staff position is by bringing in large amounts of money through donations. Mind you, i'm not making wild accusations, I saw this in my first and second year with the Corp. Major Bailey is a great man though, love his jokes.

I am genuinely concerned about my health and safety here. The safety risks are INSIDIOUs. A couple months back... someone dropped a banana peel and some kid almost slipped on it. I caught the teachers snorting EXPO in the classroom without shame or dignity. I told the principal, but i dont think I made an impact in conversation; they gave me a free pack of sharpies "for my worries" and told me to hush my lips. I see school cops indulging in dirty bribes and rich freshman refining their "business techniques." Everything is just slightly off, and I'm not liking it as much as i could be!

Fairly substandard cafeteria. Pretty cool looking hallways. Art mostly from people that graduated before 2010. Lots of odd, surrealist warped faces in every public space. Some good murals on the walls in the hallways, though Riverside students did not create my favorites. Some decent people working in administration there, but not a majority. That doesn't really matter, though, as the staff is more dynamically altered than the populace of students. The logo is ripped off from ECU, where at least there is plenty of alcohol to make you forget that you live in a state that doesn't care about education, which brings me to my next point: the teachers. Riverside teachers wear red to protest North Carolina's policy of being unfair to the education system. A timid step towards a necessary revolution. While this is good, it proves how aware teachers are that they work under a broken system that barely meets the necessary compensation of the work that being a teacher commands. Due to this, it is apparent that many teachers, especially young ones, tend to leave the school, or suffer from a lack of enthusiasm for the craft. Despite this, there are many outstanding individuals working as teachers at Riverside, all of whom benefit the student body immensely. Riverside is okay, and there is still hope for it's future. There is definitely much to be worked on, both locally and at the legislative level, but Riverside's got just enough heart to continue to improve Durham, one class at a time.
