My student Husna Khan is wonderful. She cares about my comfort as well as getting everything right. I had oral surgery last Friday the 13th with Dr. Alassy on 9th floor, so mouth is still a little tender & Husna made sure not to cause me any discomfort while getting impression today. I find all the staff & students here to be very conscientious of every thing they do & they really care about making the experience good. I have had 3 students & 2 student Doctors, all wonderful. UMN is doing a great job training people to be excellent dentists. I recommend the UMN dental program all the time. Thx for great care!

They do not deserve even 1 star. The dental hygienist in paradontal department Lisa performed cleaning of my teeth less than 20 minutes even though I supposed to have a paradontal cleaning for an hour. She even was not able to floss my implants, saying she can't get the floss through. Seriously? Dental hygienist does not know how to floss, she was extremely nervous and rushing saying she has another patient. When I came home, I understood why she was so anxious, while she did cleaning she chipped part of my tooth with her cleaning instrument. I immediately called to graduate paradontal University of Minnesota, explaining that it was her responsibility to repair the tooth and asking why I only had 20 minutes during which was not flossed and had my tooth chopped. 2 weeks No one called me back. Their patient advocate Bonita is literally the worst, she would lie, make up stories just to cover residents mistakes. She said I can have cleaning at any duration and they still will charge the full price, didn't explain why the hygienist didn't bother flossing and refused to pay for the chipped tooth. Another terrible experience I had with University of Minnesota Dental clinic. The dental student forgot to put a lining while trying on my implants and I swollen the implants. Again the patient advocate said I need to use my own insurance to cover instructions, and they never gave any refunds, I went through extraction implants operation, before which the doctor said I have 10 % chance that I could die. This place cares only about their profit, people mean anything to them.

Worst experience yet! I was turned away and my appointment was cancelled without my acknowledgment. The reception have the audacity to tell me that another open appointment is in 3 months. This is ridiculous and not the best way to provide the best experience for patients. If you want to have a toothache, they’ll make you wait 3 months for you to get checked. Another 2 months wait if you want to get your teeth taken care of. Take your teeth elsewhere to get it taken care of. You might be lucky if you’re white.

I was going to be charged $4000 at Aspen Dental for procedures my dental student and senior dentist here discovered I don't even need, plus they take my insurance and are affordable for what it doesn't cover. The student was also very calming, understanding about my dental anxiety and took the time to explain what he was doing.

Crystal Greenly

It takes a little longer, (better than to have someone rush through your procedure, right? ) and also, keep in mind that you're going to Students who are learning to become professional dentists.. not a licensed dentist. :) Affordable, Professional, and they use the most newest, up to date technology and equipment out there..! And they ( my student dentist) had done amazing each visit! : )

Kari

Made an appointment to get a second opinion at the faculty clinic and they wouldn't look at me because they said my insurance wouldn't cover it and guessed a price out of thin air. I wish they would have told me that on the phone so I didn't have to waste time going and they also never even called my insurance company. Her second opinion was to go back to the dentist I came from. I left very frustrated and still haven't gotten my teeth cleaned. Why is it so hard to just get a regular cleaning? Dental assistant was lovely though.

Great students, not yet hardened by the people of the world...

Bridget Boyer

Great care. My husband and kids go here too. We prefer the school setting to the private practices we have tried in the past. Students have been Jessie, Reuben, and Trevor. All excellent. Thank you.

Ethiopian Man

Don't even bother going there for any treatment. They'll charge a ridiculous amount of money. Even if after you make a payment, they will send your name to the credit union and request you to pay a fee you have no idea about. It is a big fruad

What do you mean they were pathetic At the front desk when I told her that I was going to get worse I have 100% disabled and it is causing me problems with my health care because of a bad dentist before that didn’t know what he was doing and damaged my partial and now my teeth that were good are going to hell because I had a bad accident in between and almost lost my arm my lawsuit was won and asked if they could get me in for care if I had the money to pay for it and then she went through the same damn thing saying that she didn’t bill Medicare she had to bill MA

I had pre-screening xrays done back in April 2014 to have wisdom teeth removed. The pre-screening went fine. After the pre-screening I tried to schedule the surgery but they could not schedule me because the schedule wasnt released yet for the next month, I thought it was odd but figured I would call back in a couple weeks. Since then I have called 4 separate times and I received the same excuse. They say to call back in about 10 days or so. So ridiculous. Maybe I have terrible luck and I am calling at the worst times but I'm to the point where I now have to pay to get my pre-screening records so I can go to another oral surgeon. Lets hope that won't be as much of a p.i.t.a.

Rude reception staff. We were referred by another clinic and let U of M know at appointment making time. They had no record and wouldn't see us without fax from clinic. I had it sent. No apologies. Poor communication skills by front desk. She said "we shouldn't have made appt" and took no responsibility for mistake. Lots of waiting and

Waste of time. I went there to save money, but I wasted about 3 hrs just waiting for a dentist, and being told that it will cost just much as regular dentist, just a little bit cheaper. go with the professional dentist, the cost is worth it and you save time.

worst place ever! i wish i known that before i went there. Got my braces done here but very poorly done. They have students work on you and they get switch to new students, which often means they start all over again! I am very disappointed on how my ortho treatment turned out, poorly done. Will never recommend this place to anyone!

What a great clinic to get your dental work done! I had not been to a dentist in a while, and I knew I would need some work done. Grayson was the dental student that was assigned to me. He was kind, gentle, very thorough, explained everything in detail & took his time to listen to me. I found Grayson to be very skilled & did a beautiful job on my teeth! I also felt the dental professors to be kind, gentle & very professional. Thank you U of M Dental School.

Jamie Wade

Very thorough and friendly! Great care...highly recomend to everyone!

Sarah Holbrook

Huge fan of the dentistry school! The students there have made the difficult situation of fixing my teeth into a very bearable process. Always smiling, always comforting & explaining everything as they go. I enjoy being a part of the schooling experience to! Joe, my dentist, is an awesome guy and I look forward to seeing him each time. (As much as you can "look forward" to seeing a dentist.....lol)

Patricia Ross

Students are friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful in providing options for the treatment plan.

Tyler Forsythe

If you've got time, go here. While the students are, well, students, they're supervised and double-checked by professionals. Because of this, appointments can take substantially longer than elsewhere, but the quality of the work is high. I've loved 95% of my experiences here — crown lengthening is unpleasant no matter where you get it done!

Ridiculous! I became a board patient this year after being treated by a nice student for a while and finally changed my old opinions of the service here as I had a really horrible experience one year ago. However, this "nice student" never told me I was a backup patient and there are chances I won't be seen at the exam until I came checked in on the exam day! Something must be very wrong with it. Doesn't she understand what is open communication with her patients?! Let alone I'm a nursing mom came all the way here asking someone else to take care of my baby for the whole day and I got nothing! Who can top this as the worst experience? I immediately left. All the regained trust has been completely shattered.A word of advice, if you decided to become a board patient, double check with your student if you are a backup patient or not otherwise they will trick you into believing that you are a real board patient till you show up on the exam day. It's their work ethics. To be on the safe side, never ever become a board patient cuz you are very likely ended up like me----a complete waste of time, energy and trip.

I think this place is great. Every student I've had has been social and personal. They seem like they care and don't rush through procedures. My most current dental student makes it hard not to laugh. I enjoy coming here. It does take a little longer but that's because they're being double checked by senior dentists. They don't recommend anything you don't need.

Serpentina Dahlhaus

Talked to just about the rudest receptionist I've ever encountered. Answered the phone with a simple "hello" after much fumbling around with the phone. Sounded like I woke her up from a nap. Immediately started telling me the whole drill for a new patients and wouldn't let me get a word in to tell her that I am a returning patient! I understand she probably talks to a lot of idiots on the phone everyday but if it's your job to answer the phone then you need to do it respectfully and patiently. I work in the hospitality industry and I was not impressed. HOWEVER. As far as the actual dental clinic goes, it is great. But PLEASE get friendlier people on the phone.

Arnold P

I am a complex patient. Tried multiple times to get into the dental clinic, including to talk to the students and residents about implants as well as have multiple cavities addressed and have a crown placed. Because I can't process Novocaine properly, I have to be sedated rather than receive shots when I have dental work done. Sent over referrals and x-rays on multiple occasions and called for a week and a half, but every day I received a completely different story including being told I would be seen sooner for the crown placement (which has to be done ASAP so I don't have to repeat a root canal) and then being told later that that was completely wrong and I would have to wait indefinitely. Was chastised by the last person on the phone for not understanding "how things work." Tried to reiterate that I had faced all of the obstacles they put in front of me but the rules seemed to change as soon as I would fulfill the requirements. Finally told that person to cancel the referral because they obviously had no intention of allowing me to be seen as a patient there.

Colleen Werner

Note: I'm reviewing this as a patient, not a student. The dental school is just about the only place in the city that'll take my insurance. I definitely recommend to anyone on MinnesotaCare or with a tight budget. If you have a broader network or are willing/able to pay out-of-pocket, I'd recommend a more traditional clinic. A few of the drawbacks: it can take weeks to months to get in for an appointment (although they do have an urgent care clinic for emergencies, and the longest wait for that is 24-48 hours). For non-emergency appointments, they pretty much have two time slots: 9:00am or 1:00pm, so you'll have to make that work with your schedule. Because you're being seen by students, the appointments can take a few hours, but everything is double-checked by instructors so any errors can be corrected. But then sometimes students and instructors will talk about you as though you're not there. A few advantages: you're helping dental students get valuable experience on real patients, and as mentioned above, it's much cheaper than a traditional clinic. And because they're students, you'll be able to get more cutting-edge treatment options than you might at a traditional clinic. Plus, if you end up having something unusual pop up during your exam, it's more likely you'll be able to get it taken care of same-day. If you do end up going here, make sure to park in the Washington Ave ramp, because they'll offer to validate your parking when you check in and you'll save $3. Plus if it's cold or rainy, there's a tunnel connecting the ramp and Moos Tower.

It was first time I visit this clinic, the worst experience I've ever had. The explanation and services from dentists are poor. It was feel that they don't want to waste time on patients. The bill staff member was beyond rude. They do not help you but only want you figure the problems out by yourself. They even complain how patients are ignorant. I won't go there one more time!

Receptionist was rude and had attitude. I knew she she was hmong by her last name. They never told me on the phone to arrive early to sign papers either. After signing papers and whatnot, the student took me into my room but left me there for 30 minutes staring at the wall. The main doctor or whoever finally came in and talked to me. He and his students then left me in my room again after taking xrays. They never told me if I was done or not. All they gave was a piece of paper of other info and so I stayed in my room for 15 minutes not knowing what to do. I finally got out of the room and noticed all the students were standing around and talking. I asked them if I was done and they looked at me in a rude way and one said "yea, I think so. You can go through there" and pointed my way out. I was confused but good thing one of the students was walking out of the room and I asked her to walk me out since I didn't know the way. Horrible experience. Not professional at all.

Liam Stoddard

The care I get when here is amazing. The reception staff help me with whatever I need and get me checked in fast. My student Dentist is amazing and has such a drive to understand and help. The facilitating dentists also give great advice and help you to understand what's going on if you need more information. I have never been disappointed in my care or with any visit.

It made me very exhausted to wait every time, even I have the appointment. I have to wait above 15 mins. The stuffs are very rude. They don't treat people as patients, and the quality of dental services are depend on person. None of them were good, I think. I do not recommend.

Severe anxiety caused by private practice. U is only place I will go. Never once had trouble getting a hold of them to make appointment, for me, the kid, or other new patient I referred. This place is the best.

Renee Lawrenz

Wow! The bad and the good..... students are slower and more tentative than experienced dentists so an appointment takes longer. But the good far outweighs the bad. The treatments are very thorough and far less than private dentists. Also, they don't try to suggest unneeded procedures to boost revenues. My previous dentist wanted me to have two root canals and crowns for two supposedly cracked molars. That was about $3,000 - $4,000 for teeth that were definitively NOT cracked and needed neither procedure. The cleaning I got here was the best ever with all stains removed. Think I am a permanent client now. Major procedures are about 1/3 less $. They take most dental insurance and MA/Medicaid. Quick appointments. Once you get a dental student you can chose to stay with the same one for as long as they are there. Two enthusiastic thumbs up.

U OF M school of dentistry is awesome! They took me in before my appointment was so kind and explained every step of the way what they were going to be doing. They extracted my tooth which was causing me severe pain for over a week I finally can sleep and I'm on the road to recovery. Thank you all at u of m school of dentistry.

Excellent service! I switched to the U of MN Dental School several years ago after hearing of the quality of the work. Most all work is EXCELLENT! An outside dentist in Richfield made the statement: “well, the dental school and work aren’t that good.” It was asked of him later: “Where did you go to dental school?” His answer: “U of MN”, oh really? Then you must not be that good. It was affirmed to me about the quality of this dentists work. I brought my wife in for an appointment at the U of MN dental school a week after this dentist gave her a 6 month cleaning of her teeth. The 4th year dental student and two professors found her teeth were full of calcium and NOT clean. This “sealed the deal” about the dental school quality. Try it. You’ll like it. It may take longer, but in the end, the work is top quality and WAY less expensive!

Charlies 1600

This place is a rip off and waste of time. Before telling you what they put us through, keep in mind the patient advocate has never returned our calls. You can’t get ahold of anyone on change with the school about any concerns or questions you may have. My husband needed all his teeth pulled me we were up front with them form the start. Instead of doing xrays and telling us the cost up front they made us jump through hoops and waste money. We spent over $350 and don’t have anything to show for it. First you make an appointment for consolation and x rays. That cost us $250 when we were told before going it wouldn’t cost more then $180. Luckily we had extra money to cover it. On the third appointment we finally got to meet with a Oral Surgey student. After talking to her and going over a plan to remove his teeth, we were then told it would cost us $12,000 just for extractions. They were going to charge us $400 and up to have a student pull his teeth. Not even a Doctor was going to do it. This cost didn’t even include the dentures. They offer no finance options. The dentures were going to be another $3,000. We stopped going and called them to speak to someone in charge and was told we weren’t allowed. The shuffle you through like cattle and like your just another number. There’s no friendly people or people who truly care working there. They have a nice racket scam going and don’t plan on changing it. We went here because we don’t have dental insurance. We work hard like any American family. We thought they would help us because that’s what they state on their website. We called a few dents office around the area. All of them charge about $200 for extracting a tooth. That’s per tooth. The school was going to charge us $400 and up. And that’s not even a doctor working on you. We got much better care was treated better by a rea dental office. My advice is don’t go here. It’s a ripoff from the word go!! Not worth the hell you have to go through to just get to their building. Just don’t it! Seriously you’ll Thank us later.

John Simonson

I've always liked the Minnesota school of dentistry because of the way they treat you as a patient. I've been going there since I was a kid and now my kid also goes there. I like the fact that they practice giving shots on each other to learn how to give shots for novocain. They're very helpful and the teachers and instructors are top of the line. It's nice to have a new dentist on a regular basis rather than the same dentist over and over again that isn't in the process of learning more every day. I would highly suggest the you then school dentistry to anyone who can attend. They do everything from braces to extractions and whitening 2 bridges. Everything you can think about at the school of dentistry is done within this one facility.

feral kitten

If you miss your first appointment you are not allowed in for one year. Representative said it's because student had to pay 250 dollars for that session then they are out that money. That is ridiculous. Students are already paying enough to go there, they shouldn't have to pay even more for giving the institution free labour.

Glenn Johnston

I've had mixed results at the school. Since Alpine Dental wanted $1400 just to clean my teeth, I had no choice but to go to the dental school. The do a prophylaxis 3 times a year for the payment by UCare for seniors, and the cleanings have been good to excellent by senior students, and fair by juniors and staff. Not so good are the dentists, though I had two good procedures and two bad ones.

Chris Morris

Very good

Made an appointment with the Faculty Dental Clinic over a month in advance. Requested off work so I could make the appointment. Receptionist calls me less than a week in advance to tell me, without explanation or apology, that my appointment is cancelled because "there isn't a doctor." No effort to accommodate me within reason and only offers to reschedule me over 2 months out. Incredibly unprofessional.

Linda Robinson Haynes

I have been coming to the U for years sometimes I'd stray but not for long. The staff and students are AMAZING! I feel so welcomed there. They are comforting and compassionate and they really do take very good care of you.

Receptionist & Staff are ridiculously rude to patients. Don't go to this dentist if your looking for hospitality.

Pamela Gallegos

I traveled over 200 miles after I was told they xould help me .only to get here spend 2.5 hours hereand now told they cant help. All the corresponds I got leading up to appointment I was told they x3.ould help

Sherri LaBrec

Great experience and very affordable. Treatments take a little longer because the students are learning, however I feel like I’m receiving quality work. Definitely worth it for me. My student dentist Jordan has been great and will make a great dentist in the future:)

Tatiana Lehnen

I have always had fabulous results every time I have gone. I have super horrible anxiety when it comes to dentists and I have found that students are far more patient and understanding than seasoned veterans. They have always been very compassionate. Be aware though the appointments are long because they take their time and have to have their work checked to make sure they did it properly but for me it is a fair trade off.

I am working with Sammy, a wonderful young man who always treats me with humor, dignity, kindness and skillful dentistry. Sammy and the senior staff at the University have put together a comprehensive, radical dental plan for me that I never would have been able to afford any place else and that I am immensely thankful for.

Amanda Nelson

I was in need of getting a lot of dental work done that I was putting off due to high costs of a regular dentist. A friend recommended the U, and I have been able to get the work done at more of a price that I could afford. Along with giving a future dentist experience as well. Both of my student dentists have been wonderful and didn't make me feel absolutely terrible for not taking the best care of my teeth. It may have taken a few more appointments than a regular dentist office, but I feel like it was worth it.
