I hate this school

Christina Contreras

I’ve been going to creative arts since the sixth grade, now I’m a freshman. I disliked cass 6th and 7th grade but 8th grade was by far my favorite year at cass because I was drama free and I had all my friends, that all changed freshman year when they all left and that’s when I truly seen the way cass was (I was so caught up in my friendships i was t really paying attention) I started seeing the way the school was run and the nurse omg she is so rude and questions everything definitely one of the worst school nurses I have ever met but the staff is okay some rude and weirder than others but some are pretty cool and understanding. It’s November 12th I left probably a month ago and I’m now in Harding which I’m happy about because unlike cass they don’t treat us like babies and there isn’t 10 things of stair cases but I regret two things, one being leaving my close friend at cass and lastly not leaving cass sooner.

I'm currently a sophomore in CASS, the teacher are great and you can actually get a close bond with them than other school. The students there are nice but you do go through the same highschool process where a fight does happen sometime but we are acceptable of everybody talent and never discriminate one and another.

I’ve only been here for one year and oh boy man... lem me tell you that it was a rollercoster ride of emotion! I loved most teachers because they were so friendly and kind, the kids were another story, some would act like your friend until you figure out who they really are, a bunch of kids who were just there because they either lived by there or were enrolled there by their elementary meaning that some had no interest in art, the fights man come on don’t fight for some stupid reason! I left because of the kids and crying there too many times, if you’re like me and want to be here for the art I highly incourge you to come here and be strong (unlike me) and perhaps you can make it to the next level?

I have to agree with the review Alexis Poirier wrote below. I was a graduate of 2011 at this school just before they moved and slightly adjusted their school name. My senior year here was the best thing I could ever asked for. By going to this school, I was taught by friends how to ride the city bus. This experience taught me how to be independent and utilize my artistic skills. We had to provide our own lunch. I was literally the 1% of the Asian people there. Everyone treated me with respect and kindness. We would have to audition to get into the school. It was challenging yet unique. I was amazed by how unique and small the community was but yet so powerful. It made me like smaller groups, as teachers can focus more on individuals and their crafts. So much passion and memories here that I really miss this school. I am looking forward to visit the school sometime soon. I hope we can create more charter schools like this! The teachers we're my favorite. I will never forget my experience here <3

I got bullied relentlessly here, and the teachers did nothing about it. Kids would threaten so whip me and my friends with their belts while backing us into a corner, and the teacher would just stand there and watch. Then, he’d threaten to call administraton when I tried to leave for my own safety. I struggled greatly with depression in middle school, and my case manager always guilted me by saying “other people have it worse”. The vice principal of the time told my parents that I’m manipulative, that I’m a bad kid, and that I’m faking my mental illness. I got smacked upside the head on the first day of seventh grade. That’s all just off the top of my head. This school is trash, and I’m disgusted that it’s still running and that it has a relatively good reputation. They sweep anything incriminating under the rug.

I was a graduate of Creative Arts High School in 2012. My last year there was when they moved into the new building and things began to change. Here is what I'd like you to know about this place before the change; The school was small at the time. We had about 100 students. The community was great. The students barely argued and the culture we had there encouraged other students to respect each other. New students easily adapted to this culture. Many of the students that came here were indeed creative. Unique and different. Many of my peers and even myself believe this school had saved our lives. Many of us had rough home lives and the teachers understood this. Since the school was small, the teachers were able to be our mentors and encouraged us. If your child has a passion for art, these teachers can and will help your child become successful in the art world as long as they utilize it. After the change I have noticed that our teachers began experiencing stress. We had more students and many changes that impacted our culture as a school. I still believe we can bring back the culture we once had that allowed us to be successful individuals.

Let's just say they cram left wing propaganda down students throats, and is not all it is cracked up to be.

i've been going to this school since 7th grade and im currently in 10th grade. this school has lots of weird kids and emos here. the kids here are ugly and smell weird. i only go here because it is not that far away from my house and because of my friends who attend here, but i might choose to switch schools for my senior year because this stupid school does not have homecomings or barely any dances. some of the teachers are rude or are really creepy and some are nice, also this school is so poor we have sucky lunches, barely any field trips, and most of the events cost money. it is an ok school and like i said the only reason i still go here is my friends.

There are better places to get your education. Some teachers are super nice but some are complete jerks (but that is like that at any school)

It's absolutely disgusting that this school did not call the police after a 63 year old teacher was assaulted. Google 'teacher assaulted at Creative Arts Secondary School' if you haven't heard about it. The school district’s handbook says a school is to notify police, but they chose not to. Shame on them. After reading Christopher's review, this seems to be the theme with this school.

My daughter just started this year when we moved from mounds view school district. So far it has NOT been good. My daughter was assaulted by another student, and situation was handled poorly to say the least. She was sent home on public transportation , without seeing the school nurse about her injuries. I took her to regions E,R. Where they diagnosis said concussion/head trauma.!! School denied it happened, then quickly back peddled. After further threats from other child and her friends. My daughter has been singled out by this group and the schools answer was to harrass and intimidate my daughter about her attendance!! She has Dr.'s note,E.R. note concussion clinic note and limitation papers, and the other child wasn't disciplined, charged w/assault, suspended,NOTHING! The school even tried to turn it around on my daughter and claimed she threatened the other(violent -assaultive) student. Removing my daughter from that class, searching her person and belongings for a supposed weapon(knife) they accused my daughter of varying!!! This proved a false accusation, yet the girl that assaulted my child remains at large to hurt other students with throwing school chairs. And everyday they call me regarding my daughters attendance!!! Pretty messed up priorities people! To this date my daughter is still suffering headaches, dizziness, vision problems, memory problems and STILL NOTHING done about the other student!!!!???!??!

Lots of bullying and fights

I started attending this school in 6th grade and am currently in 9th, about to be 10th. I've loved this school since I first started here. But, there are also some less.. Appreciated things I've come to notice. Either way, I'm planning to stay here until I graduate. At least to support others. Pro - 1. Finding Talent) Students learn about unknown talents all the time. I've seen countless students change their ways and take on an art form that they never thought they would. Some would argue that they wanted nothing to do with CAS, that they were forced here due to not being put in one they wanted. But, soon they realize what they could do. Their true potential and their love for the community. Some grow more kind to peers, focus harder on their education, and want to help the school grow as a whole. 2. Community) Students who love the arts are always very kind and supportive. Whether it be about art or helping someone as a person, we've always opened up to help new people. There are countless students that support people every day and it's beautiful. 3. Teachers) Most-- if not all teachers are amazing. They are understanding and try their best to help with whatever you're having trouble with (school or personal). They are so generous and helpful to students almost all the time. They want to watch you progress with your work and see how you grow with knowledge. 4. LGBTQ) Our school has a large amount of LGBTQ students. Whether it be sexuality or gender identity, a lot of students relate to one another through this. There has been some bullying, and when it happens, both staff and students have the victim's back. One student frequently said "Fa**ot" and "Queer" to students and he was told to sit in the hall and wait for the teacher to talk to him every time. Aside from that, someone will always support you for your sexuality and gender no matter what it is. Con - 1. Students) At least a third of this school's students do not want to be here. They were placed here as a last resort. And, a lot of the students cause problems. Whether it be trying to pick fights (after sitting at their table/spot, bumping into them in the hall, and even just not answering them when they talk.), or just causing some trouble in class where teachers and students are having a hard time (due to joking around, talking, and arguing with both staff and students.) It's stressful. I'm not one to fight, but I've had people try to start one with me over things that can really just be settled with speech. They don't understand respect for what it REALLY means. The way to avoid this is to honestly just report it to staff. 2. Specific Staff) A lot of students dislike the two counselors at CAS. One apparently flat out told a student to give up her art because "It's hard to get hired." The other doesn't help students that need to talk. A friend of mine was kicked out of the counselors' room in the middle of a breakdown and yelled at to stay in class. I've also had them handle my personal (and expensive) violin without permission, and yell at me for drawing before class even started. It's pretty counter productive if you ask me. I've started crying from at least one of them due to the things she would say and do. They also use written work from students to get them into counseling. Yes, that could be useful but I felt that it didn't help at all for me. 3. Art Students) Due to stress of kids who don't want to be here, a lot of students who do want to be here just up and leave. I've had several friends leave due to this, and it doesn't help the school go the right way (but it's their choice to leave and I respect that). So the more art students that leave, the more stress it puts on the other art students as our numbers go down and it feels like our voices get a little more hushed. 4. LGBTQ) As a member of LGBTQ, I've experienced things myself. There have been cases of students discriminating transgender and non-straight students. Not just holding their own opinion, but going out of their way to tell someone that their sexuality and/or gender was "fake".
