REVIEWS OF Fryeburg Academy IN Maine

Paul Klenk

Fryeburg Academy has a very good reputation in the area. I noticed there was a review concerning the dismissal of Coach Lee. Obviously, the writer is not a lawyer and clearly knows nothing about the First Amendment nor education law. Most people, and wrongly so, believe that First Amendment rights are absolute; they are NOT. In order for the First Amendment to come into play, there MUST be "state action." In addition, the First Amendment rights of students were first addressed in Tinker vs. Des Moines and this case involved symbolic freedom of speech. The court did issue a caveat where the education purpose would be balanced with the First Amendment. Thus, if the education process is disrupted substantially, then the First Amendment takes a back seat. Logically, it makes sense. Also, coaches, typically, have yearly appointments that are NOT covered by the general provisions of the teachers' contact. Consequently, coaching positions are appointed on a year to year basis. I am not a liberal in any sense, but I do know the law, while the other writer clearly does not!

Fryeburg is an utterly unique type of school, and I won't hesitate to say that the best years of my life were spent in its halls. The education and opportunity it provides its students is par-none, and the character of its graduates provide a better review of its system than any words could. It is a beacon, a bell tolling clear in a noisy and often confused world.

Firstly it is sickening institution of learning would force someone to resign based on their educated opinions, however what is the most disturbing of all, is that if you have bothered to read the open letter, he only made factual statements. I urge anyone who sees this to think twice before sending a child to this school. It is obvious by the actions of the schools dean, faculty, and alumni, that your children's educational growth will be stifled. It is obvious that if your child does not share the opinions of said faculty and staff, they will be judged as the coach was.

Fired a coach for sharing something on his private Facebook account that they disagreed with! Nice to know free speech is dead at Fryeburg Academy!

They FIRED Coach Lee for his freedom of speech.

Worst school ever. If you are Asian (not American Asian), kindly stay away from this school. They treat international students like piece of craps. Not all of them, but a lot of them are racists.

Academic freedom and the ability to exercise one's GUARANTEED freedom of speak has apparently cost the job of one of the member's of this "esteemed" faculty. Shame on you, Fryeburg, for following the direction and intention of your Islamic Leader-in-Chief.

embarrasing story about the firing of their lacrosse coach for expressing his freedom of speech. Wonder if they would have fired him if he had made similar comments about Christian or Jewish students. I have 2 children who i would now never send to a prep school such as this.

Fryeburg Academy is wonderful school. It is a community of people who are strongly dedicated to the heritage of the school and it's student body. The school is committed to fostering a supportive, respectful, tolerant and inclusive community. The faculty and staff are warm, caring and welcoming individuals who are all working toward a common goal, the success of each individual student. The depth of the curriculum is truly impressive. I am truly excited for the opportunities that await my children at FA!

When an institution of "learning" apparently disregards or is ignorant of the laws of the United States respecting Free Speech, everything else that emanates from the institution I suspect. When a coach is fired for legitimately challenging the outright lies of a public official who just happens to be the President of the (once) United States, the institution forfeits its credibility, trustworthiness and integrity. Shame on you!

Great School I hope others agree

Unfortunately I cannot support a school administered by bigots who are intolerant of other points of view. As a school you should embraced and encourage freedom of thought and freedom of speech in both your students and staff, not stifle it. The discharging of Scott Lees was a despicable act on your part and those who took part the decision to do that should be ashamed of yourselves.

This school stole two friends from me. One of which was my childhood friend.

Michael Bowler

If they continue to teach intolerance to the free speech of others, maybe 223 years is enough!
