East is truly the best public high school in Kansas and has one of the most diverse student populations. Everyone that left one star reviews did so based on a single solitary event without having the full details. A lot of them have no knowledge as to what East is actually like. They rated an entire school based on the biased perspective of a media outlet. I wish these people were wise enough to understand that this page is for an entire school and not Ken Thiessen. East should have the highest rating out of any public high school in Wichita since it has the best academic and athletic environment. It has so much to offer students no matter what their background. If you are worried about public opinion, don't be. It is a source of pride in the Wichita community, the teachers are caring and invested in their students, and nationally it is ranked as the best public high school in Kansas for education and athletics. Don't be fooled by the collection of disdainful and uninformed google reviews.

Any school that will place such importance on something as small as a varsity basketball letter should not be allowed to continue imparting these kinds of life lessons to the students it claims to teach. It simply needs to be excluded from competition completely. This kind of mentality is exactly what America is not about. When you segregate a special needs child from everyone else because he's not good enough you're exhibiting complete hypocrisy! I have just read the story online about Michael, the downs syndrome special needs student that was not allowed to wear a varsity letter jacket to school. The varsity Jacket gives the boy a sense of pride in his high school, which it will be seriously lacking when this story gets out to the general public. (2015 Grad) Aside from the bad reviews that were made by uninformed individuals who never attended the school, I had a great experience at Wichita East. The IB program is challenging, their music department is one of the best in the state, their business teachers are great and will help prepare you for the real world, and overall I had a great experience at the school. Everyone will have a different experience but I feel like I had a choice in what I was able to accomplish. The numerous poor reviews are regarding a administrative decision where the principal did not allow a special-needs student to wear a varsity jacket because he did not play varsity. You can decide for yourself if that's a reason to hate the entire school - I always found the staff and even the students to be very friendly to the special-needs students at East.

My two children have worked their way through the IB program at East. It is clear that East has one of the top education programs in the country, based on standardized test scores, scholarships awarded, and the overall quality and standards of their graduates. This is as good as high school education gets in Kansas, bar none. Most of these students move on to major universities, many with scholarships. Don't send your kids to this program unless they are college material, willing to work diligently, and regularly top in their classes. You won't be doing them any favors. A good work ethic is absolutely required for success.

It was amazing!!!! I walked into the school and felt like breaking out in song. The everyday students just think of it as a high school but for a John school musical fan it is a way different experience. In the theatre I was about to sing " on the night of nights" and the gym I could have just started singing " getcha head in the game". In the classroom where Gabriella and Troy reunited I started singing "what time is it?" and the room where they sang their first song by kelsi. It was so much fun. I had such a hard time leaving. Other than that, an unprofessional, unclean school focused on the lower-half testing students. Never heard of this place until today. They may not have a very high profile down there. But they do have what it takes to tell a special needs kid he can't wear a letter jacket.
