Here you will see the reviews of real people who purchase the products of Al Johnson’s (Restaurant) in the state of Wisconsin.
To this day the firm has a score of 4.6 stars over 5 and the rating has been based on 2008 reviews.
As you can see the average score it has is basically the highest, and it is founded on a large number of scores, so we may conclude that the evaluation is quite accurate. If there are many people who bothered to leave their feddback when they are pleased with the service, is that it works.
As you know, we don't usually stop to set scores when they are good and we usually do it only if we've had a problem or issue...
This Restaurant is classified in the category of Restaurant.
First of all, if you are not waiting for a table, you were there when it opened or in the off season. Our waitress was very nice, both my wife and I appreciated her serving us. Food is fantastic and is a very good value. Pleasant atmosphere and the building is made of huge logs. You have to go when the goats are on the grass roof. The children will love it. The gift shop is a good way to kill time while waiting for your table. Although some items are a bit pricey.
First time there, large menu to chose from across the street from the Bay, service was outstanding and are food was delicious
Fun atmosphere with great food. We went for breakfast and had a variety of different items, all of which were good. The mimosas were excellent. Friendly staff. Just expect a wait when going in the weekend, but there is a great space outside with a bar, games, and tables to spend your time or many shops down the road in walking distance.
Get there early. This place fills up fast. Great iconic restaurant. The goats on the roof are always a draw.
Al Johnson's is a staple of Door County and is one of the most popular restaurants in the area. You'll enjoy the food, but you're most likely coming for the goats on the roof. If you come during the busy season, expect a crowded restaurant that's looking to keep the customers turning over. After our bill came, there were no more drink refreshments and we felt it was time to go. When we went to check out, they informed us that they no longer split bills. This was a little awkward as we had 3 different couples who were all planning on paying separately. I would recommend that they update their Point of Sale system to make it easier for them to split bills for their customers. I know it sounds like I'm complaining a lot, but the food is good. Just understand that you're going to a tourist trap and not a quiet, relaxing restaurant.
I don't understand the hype of this place. It smells like a cafeteria when you walk in and the food tastes like those old buffet places popular in the 90's.
Swedish goodness in an authentic log cabin with goats on the roof... So much going on at this place! But as a restaurant, their food is simply amazing. Great big portions and reasonable prices make this one of my favorite breakfast joints in Door County.
Great traditional Swedish pancake and meatballs. Great staff, can handle big crowd professionally. Will go back again.
I love everything about this place. I have gone here since I was little. The goat's on the roof. Talking to Mrs. Johnson such a beautiful lady.
Awsome place to visit, great food. Never disappoints. The goats on the roof keep you entertained while you wait to be seated. I also love to shop inside. Enjoy
There goats we're, as always, fabulous. Service is fast -really fast- and friendly and the food is great. Yes, those pancakes have I've cream on them.
Atmosphere, service, and food were good. I appreciate the fast table turns and tremendous volume they handle every day. Great business, great food. And... Goats on the Roof!
Great variety in menu choices. Vegetable hash very tasty . Enjoyed decor, Scandinavian costumes, and attached gift shop. Goats on the roof an added delight.
The restaurant atmosphere was very pleasant and the background music was excellent for my generation. I am in my sixties. The staff was friendly and efficient. I personally did not care for the food but I can't say that it was fed food I just didn't like it. If you like Swedish food I would highly recommend for you.
Amazing. Restaurant. Great food. The swedish pancakes are amazing. The staff was super friendly. Large selection of food. Then to top it off if you are there during the day you can see the goats on the roof.
If you are visiting Door county it’s a must visit Resturant at lease once. Goats on the roof is a good attraction and novelty of that brings the visitors. In my experience the food and service can be better. Pancakes was good meat balls were bit dry. Service was below par they were understaffed the day I was there.
I had the Sweedish pancakes and meatballs - tasty and filling! The lingoberries wers the right mix of sweet and tart.
Quaint and reasonable prices make this a must do stop!
Good eggs and bacon. Didnt like the pancakes. Everything is very pricey in the gift shop (normal for door county though). And it was a little difficult to understand the menu/how to order.
By far the best place in town. Fun environment and great food and drinks
Come hungry because you will definitely leave stuffed. Great food great service goats on the roof. Always love coming here every year.
Amazing swedish food. Love me some lingenberries.
This place is a classic. We had to wait ninety minutes, but luckily they have opened a beautiful beer garden right next door! All of the breakfast standbys are delicious, but the secret weapon on the menu is the open faced turkey sandwich....incredible.
This place it amazing the food is the best I have had in a while and it is an interesting place overall. One cool thing about it is there are goats on the roof. There are two restaurants in the business one with outdoor seating and one with indoor seating. The menus are different between these two parts so keep that in mind.
This is a must for Door County. I went there at 8 years old and came back at 48. What a great place. You will wait for at least 30 minutes but worth the wait. Great outside bar where you can play bags or just sit and enjoy. Once you get in the service is extremely fast and courteous. I hope I can get back soon. Well done!
Great food and really good service. Price was moderately high but taking into account the portion sizes were above average, it was appropriate. The attached gift shop was a bit high priced but it is a tourist location. Rain kept the goats off the roof but did not dampen our spirits as we enjoyed an excellent meal. The singular item I would have changed was that they only had Spotted Cow (a Wisconsin beer) in a can which is close to sacrilege. It is an extremely busy and popular location so I strongly recommend making reservations at least an hour in advance. Easy to find location with a lot of parking. If you end up not making reservations and have to wait, the surrounding town is quaint and makes for a pleasant walk.
We ate breakfast and supper the same day, our anniversary! Wonderful food
First time there. Food was good. Music way to loud.
Great food and great place to visit. Have to see the goats
Good Swedish and American food at a reasonable price. Plus there are goats on the grass roof. The restaurant has been completely modernised from eleven years ago.
Let’s just say the service at the front speaks for itself. Rude and unprofessional. Only need to come here once or look at the pictures instead. Do the fish boils up here instead. It is a better experience than this! Waiter was exceptional though and made up. This was originally going to be one star. Food is decent
Take away the novelty of the goats and the swedish garb -- it's a decent meal but not worth a pit stop. We ate the swedish meatballs and found them to be pretty ok. I know they pride themselves on their meatballs, but I did not find them noteworthy. Maybe they were having an off day. Of course my points of comparison are cafeteria dorm food and Ikea ... But I still hold to the 3 stars.
Their breakfast is more appetizing than the rest of the menu. The coffee is pretty good too. Betsy is a good waitress.
Great food! Goats were not out kinda a bummer and they are having work done on the out side. But we enjoyed it
I had swedish pancakes with lingonberries and swedish meatballs. Delicious and we'll worth the wait.
Amazing to see the goat's, and the food was even better! I recommend the homemade meatballs!
Swedish meatballs a disappointment, not authentic at all. Meatballs dry with an off flavor. Gravy not swedish. Fake mashed potatoes. Green/yellow beans flavorless. Service good
Super, busy place. A warm but extremely rainy Friday morning around 10:20 am there was a 45 minutes to 1 hour wait. Unfortunately, the goats were not on the roof, die to rain and wind. I decided to take my wife here for an anniversary breakfast. My wife loves, pancakes or crepes with Lingonberries. We have eaten here whenever we are in the area, but for the last seven years, we haven't been able to make it, so this was a treat. My wife ordered the Swedish pancakes with Lingonberries and Swedish Meatballs and instead of coffee we had a hot up of Apple Cider. I had the Swedish Pancake Special (pictured), this included swedish pancakes with Lingonberries, Swedish Meatballs and 2 eggs over-medium. For those not familiar with Lingonberries, they have a taste similar to a mixture of the tartness of Cranberries, and the sweet/sour of Raspberries.
Food was good. The ambience inside and on the grounds fit the Sister Bay character as a Door County, WI resort. Even the beer garden was cool. .
Love the restaurant. The goats are a wonderful touch on the roof during the warmer months. Everytime I go to door county I go here to purchase a ring from the store, coffee, and Linden berries. Great atmosphere for the whole family. Coffee is always a great way to warm up.
The only epic food of my biking trip to Door County. It was worth the time. Great ethnic food.
Lunch was just so so. Pea soup hadn't cooked long enough so the peas were still on the hard side. Perch basket & burger with fries was good.
Service was great and the restaurant itself is pretty cool with the goats on the roof..... I just dont understand the rave reviews about the food.... The Swedish meatballs??? Ok I guess. I felt they tasted like a processed meatball(encore)not anything home made. Couple of other items we had were just ok also...
food was good..but our waitress was very RUDE and sarcastic..dont know her name , but she has tatoos all over arms..You would think they would be greatful for the customers they get ..so that customers would return! I would not go back..bad atmosphere
Absolutely fabulous meal! We are the famous pancakes and a corned beef sandwich. Everything was delicious, the atmosphere was fun and the goats were entertaining. I can't wait to go back!
Cold and hard meatballs. Pancakes that looks like a crepe. No fresh juice and one kind of coffee
Its a place that you must have breakfast at at least once... each time you visit Door County. The wait is always long but its because its a great place to eat and everyone knows it.
Fun place with goats on the roof. Delicious food and great gift shop!
Food was great and all workers in restaurant and gift shop were very friendly.
You just can't beat the Swedish Pancake Special! Meatballs and pancakes are excellent!
It was AMAZING I love the food all three times me and my family (of 6) got seated right away. The biscuits and gravy was delicious the discounts came apart so easily and tasted so good. They waitress got to us right away and it didnt take that long for our food to come out even with a full place
Located in sister Bay in door countyjust opposite the lake. Stunning view and location. Had the mango pineapple salsa salmon, simply awesome good balance in flavor and spices. Also, had the grilled chicken sandwich with cucumber salad, was good pretty much what you would expect. A little disappointed that I couldn't see the goats above the roof. Would definitely come back and recommend to anyone who wants to visit door county.
Fun place to visit. They really do have goats on the roof. Swedish pancakes were awesome! Wait is generally pretty long.
Good as usual! Grabbed a tasty IPA at the bar next door while waiting
Fabulous Swedish fare. Pancakes were perfect!
Food was wonderful and the service was incredibly fast even though it was busy. Was a great place and experience overall!
Good food, unique grass roof with goats. Downside, closed restrooms for cleaning while restaurant still open. Closed in 30 minutes so felt like they could wait. Nice outside bar and game area.
This place is good! Service is the best I've ever seen at a resturant. They really get people in and out quickly! Pancakes were excellent!
Goats on the roof and great bay view aside, the meatball was excellent! The little Scandinavian store is a must-see! The outdoor bar is great, try Malmo Mule.
Great Fun, good food and service. The gift shop was interesting and fun also. The Swedish pancakes we're good, just not what I expected. A bit dense and not light as I expected. Seated in good time. Friendly staff. I recommend this esp for seniors.
Annual tradition going here once every summer with Grandma. It's a cute place with a nice gift shop. The Swedish pancakes don't taste the same to me though as when I had them as a kid, I picked up a package of the pancake mix and their coffee blend the last time I was there to try and replicate the way I remember them from years ago. Also, they remodeled the main dining area and I liked it more the way it was, with the old wood and rustic Swedish look.. it's still nice though. I like how the waitresses wear their clothes in the tradition of old Sweden - it's a nice stop along the way up there.
Excellent food! Worth the wait. Lovely gift shop. Hubby bought me a present.
What can one say about the best Scandinavian restaurant around.
Great Food! We were here on Independence Day and the place was packed. Even so, we got a spot at the counter. The servers were very friendly and helpful. The Swedish pancakes were terrific. Try the lingonberry lemonade! Also, save a few minutes to browse the gift shop on the other side of the building. Apparently it was too hot for the goats to be out. We didn't see any.
If it not because the superb service I would give 2 stars. The famous swedish meatball were super salty and hard. The rest foods just average.
Very nice, great service and food. Well worth it.
I really struggled debating on if I should give 5 stars. I did not like the metal cups at all, they gave the soda a metallic taste. The food was excellent though. I loved that they had cucumber salad, and the burgers were excellent. Also in our group of 6 nobody got sick, which is abnormal because a couple of us have sensitive stomachs.
Good food, very good server. Nice place for lunch and to be able to watch the bay.
Came with a bus of 26 people and still had great service. Our drinks never emptied, food came quickly and was delicious. Very friendly staff.
The only down side is that this place is crazy busy. It's so unique that you have to do it. The food isn't my style, but if you haven't been there or ever had these kind of pancakes, then you should do it once. For me, no need to go back, but frankly, I wouldn't have missed going there once. They turn tables fast but expect an hour wait unless you go real early. Every tourist is also eating here. Just know that everyone will ask you if you ate there, so you might as well. The whole goats on the roof thing is crazy.
As we had never been to Al Johnson's before we were excited to try it today. The hostess took my first name and number of people(2). She said it would be about 30 minutes. OK. We walked through the gift shop and then sat down to wait After 40 minutes, seeing several parties being seated who came in well after us, I went up to ask the hostess how long it would be. She asked for my name. Then she said she had called for us and pointed to the name she had written. She had written the wrong name down. After seeing that she had made a mistake she said she was sorry and would call for us next. Within 5 minutes of that she called for 2 different parties of 4 and 2. I again walked up to ask. She looked at me and again asked for my name. At that point I just said that we were leaving. Once is a mistake. Twice is just sloppy and disrespectful. Needless to say we will not be back!
Great place to eat, definitely worth the wait. I loved the Meetballs, my inner Norwegian loved the food. Good gift shop too
Spectacular meal! Visited this restaurant again after 40 years. Was as great as I remembered it when I was a child. Loved seeing the goats on the roof!
Goats on a roof! Breakfast food and syrup are great. Staff wears traditional garb. Must see/eat when in door county.
This place is so cool to visit. Swedish pancakers are wonderful. The goats grazing on the roof is a sight to see. Loved it and got to enjoy with my best friend.
Fabulous food! Prepare yourself for a long wait time, we drove to Ellison Bluff State Park and back with plenty time. The food comes out fairly quick and the atmosphere is great.
Unique experience in Door County. Of course, I had the swedish pancakes. (Aka a big crepe) You will not go hungry!
The food was delicious but the goats were on the roof until noonish the gift shop was great
Great Swediah food but always a wait. Love the meatballs but it is the smorgasbord plate that keeps us coming back. Everything is super fresh and absolutely delicious!
Great place to go and visit even though people are not from sister Bay
Al Johnson's is a must do when visiting Door County. Got there at 6:30 on a Friday night and was seated within 15 minutes. Service was great. Food was fantastic! LOVE the Swedish meatballs! And the salad greens contain no iceberg lettuce. Quality ingredients used for all dishes. (And love the lingonberry preserves they serve with traditional Swedish biscuits and crackers)
We weren't sure how this was going to go... goats on the roof and Eastern bloc waitresses. The goats were extremely photogenic and our waitress was beyond reproach... oh, and the food was exquisite!
Disappointed the goats weren't out for 2 days. Food was good. Like all the different crackers and Limpa bread basket. The store had some really cute things
Great food, great service, wonderful staff and goats on the roof
This is by far my favorite restaurant in Wisconsin. They have amazing, genuine tasting Scandinavian food i can compare to the Swedish food I eat in Stockholm. The goats on the roof and the fun goat cam makes it an exciting experience. They have a large gift shop with great prices. Their waiters are all dressed in traditional swedish clothes and their hospitality is excellent. They have a beer garden to enjoy in the summer and take care of their goats on a farm away from the restaurant. The goats are well taken care of and munch on the grass on the roof from time to time. I highly recommend the meatballs, bruschetta whitefish, and pancakes.
Fun atmosphere, Swedish food options, long wait to get seated, but they are pros at the process. Enjoy the goats on the roof and their outdoor beer garden next door while waiting
Loved it! Terrific atmosphere, great food, super service. Our waitress even came and found us in the store when our food came out so that it wouldn't sit and get cold!❤
Swedish Pancakes; meatballs; and aquavit... a Door County, Wisconsin must visit restaurant. Expect a wait to be seated during the summer months.
A very nice restaurant with friendly staff who all dress in Swedish attire. No matter what you order on the menu, it's all delicious. After you are done with your meal you can stop to see their gift shop where there is something there for everyone. Make sure you look up on the roof of the restaurant every summer to see if the goats are nibbling on the grass! A great place to stop and have a bite with your friends or family.
Everyone recommended this place as a must-see in door county and I was a little underwhelmed. It is cool to see the goats on the roof and the authentic Swedish outfits, food options, and store but the food itself was not that great and a bit overpriced.
Early fall is about the best time f the year to go. You see the goats, avoid the crowds, and still can still enjoy the best Swedish dishes in the county ... if not the entire state. You can expect a 20+ minute wait but it's worth it. The wait staff is always friendly, ready with a joke or an observation about the weather ;)
Always a fun spot!! Gotta love the goats on the roof. A must see spot and great gift shop. Didn't eat there so can't comment on the food, but just a unique special fun place to see and visit...so fun!
This place is the best restaurant I've been to! Our food was really good and served in just about a 15 minute wait time. The waiter we had was really nice, and bathrooms are clean. I would definitely return to Sister Bay to visit here!
Awesome breakfast spot. Swedish pancakes were good. We came here around 8am and goats weren’t on the roof. We had to wait till 9:30. If you want to see them double check the times so you’re not waiting around.
Very nice atmosphere!! Nice waitress. Really enjoyed the cherry topped swedish pancakes. Only wish we could have seen the
Wonderful sit down restaurant with great food, great service, and good prices. It was one of the more affordable places we ate at while visiting door county. I ended up trying a breakfast meal for dinner (because why not) and loved it! If you've never had the meatballs you're missing out!
Incredible Swedish pancakes and Swedish meatballs! I also love the shop attached to the restaurant!
Very unique restaurant offering some traditional swedish dishes. The staff consists of exchange students and everyone is very friendly. Of course you can't overlook the goats on the roof! Stop in, you'll enjoy it!
Who else can say they ate at a restaurant with goats on the roof?? Very unique!
It is a Door County staple honestly. Everyone should visit once, (if not, drive by for the goats) but for us the food is just ok. Service is just ok. It's all about the goats on the roof. It's a tourist attraction for sure. Nice people who run the place.
Didn't get to see the goats, but the decor is cozy and warm, the food is good and family friendly. Lots of cute trinkets at the gift shop.
The "special" sandwich and soup...Whitefish and Tomato Dill...were fresh, flavorable and satisfying, topped off with a side of pickled red cabbage....and...affordable for Door County.
This iconic restaurant still is the best place in town and worth the wait. The staff are well seasoned to handle the crowds and very efficient at moving people thru their meals. The food is top notch and plentiful. A must-stop when in Door County!
I have been coming to Door County for years but this is the first time I got to experience Al Johnson's and it did not disappoint! Even though the goats were wintering, was absolutely wonderful. If you have a dairy allergy and you call ahead and give them a few hours notice they will make dairy free Swedish pancakes!! What a treat to get to have a traditional dish with my family and do the full Swedish pancake experience! many thanks to the kitchen, owners, and very friendly staff for taking such good care of us! My uncle knows some of the staff very well but everyone was so friendly and kind. It was beautiful to see it dressed up for Swedish Christmas as well. The store has an excellent selection of Swedish food and other items. the location is also lovely being right across the street from the water where there is a beautiful beach to walk along. Make this place a must stop! Thank you again for the dairy free experience--now we just need some dairy-free meatballs! ;)
Unique Swedish restaurant with a grass roof and goats grazing on it. Good food and service, always busy so reservation is recommended.
Wonderful breakfast with great coffee. You can even get swedish meatballs and pickled beets at breakfast.
The Swedish pancakes and eggs Benedict are delicious. The coffee is really good too. The service has always been great. Expect to wait if you get there after 8 am.
Very interesting place to visit with a nice gift shop. Wait staff was friendly and helpful but food was just so so.
They got the goats, they got the pancakes, and they have the swedes. So many memories here! Make some of your own!
Great food and friendly staff. Nice gift shop. Love the familes history with the town
This place is to die for love it! Staff is awesome every one should try this. The goats on the roof make it more exciting and fun! The atmosphere and food are extraordinary!!
A staple in Door County. I've only been there for breakfast but the food is outstanding. Get there right around when it opens or your looking a decent wait time. The gift shop has fun items to purchase.
Excellent food, and you have to go to see the goats on the roof.
We came to Door County late March. The breakfast at Al Johnson’s was so delicious and I keep wondering when I can go back. The service was excellent, food was beyond delicious. Love the atmosphere. Cannot wait to return.
Best pancakes, reasonable prices, they have great dinner items as well. The waits usually long, but if you go at an off peak hour its fine.
Always the best food and service. Worth every wait.
First of all, there are goats on the roof. GOATS. The roof tops are covered in live grass, and goats graze on the roof! Second, wait staff is dressed in traditional Norsk garb. Third, the gravy, oh, the delicious gravy. Don't leave without trying the meatballs. This place is famous for Swedish pancakes, meatballs, and lingonberry. I opted for eggs Benedict Florentine (with spinach and tomatoes); it was absolutely wonderful! Finally, very cute gift shop with all things Swedish, Dane, and Norwegian.
We've lived here for ten years and finally made it to Al Johnson's. It was a wonderful experience for our family. The food was well-priced and delicious. The staff was extremely friendly and the overall atmosphere was unique. We also enjoyed stopping in the gift shop.
Went for breakfast. No wait. Amazing bacon and Lingonberry lemonade. Pancakes are good. Rest of the meals are good. It's worth stopping at and checking out.
Always a great place to stop when touring Door County. Good Swedish food, friendly people, fast service and goats on the roof. What more could you want? We tried the pickled herring for the first time. It's actually really good.
Has been excellent for the last 25 years. Outstanding food, service and atmosphere. A staple for any visitor to the area.
I rate this experience overall as a 4. I have been going to Al Johnson's since I was a child. This is my first time since coming as an adult with my own child. We had an hour and a half wait time which is normal for Al Johnson's. During that wait we watched a group of twelve and two high chairs come in and get sat after twenty minutes of waiting. It seemed as if they knew a wait staff and used this to their advantage. The worst part of it was it seemed the hostess had no control and had no idea what was going on but had to deal with patrons noticing that something was wrong. Once we sat down we were served our food and drinks within a 30 minute period of time. I have worked in food service for over 8 years. This sort of treatment is appalling to me and is the main reason I am writing this review today.
Such a great place. Come on, goats on the roof! Great staff...food is even better. All served in a great and charming atmosphere. Don't forget to check out the gift shop.
I actually went here a while back but I never wrote a review and the memory of this place popped in my head. At the time, I had a new baby and a 6 year old with me and all was going well until my delicious looking salmon reached the table, then the baby begin to fuss and cry. When feeding and singing didn't, work I got up, went to an empty corner and bounced around a bit. It was working! My baby was content. BUT, my food was getting cold and I was starving. :p Just then, a very nice waitress stepped up to me, and then another, offering to hug and bounce my baby around for me so I could go eat my food with my daughter. It was awesome! I HAPPILY took them up on the offer and downed my meal. With a staff that goes above and beyond and food that is fresh and Scrumptious, You can't really go wrong. It's a long drive for me, but, it will be the first place I go back to when I head north again!
We stopped at this restaurant on the way out of town, there are some fun choices for the entire family. I was hoping that there would be more authentic swedish food served, mostly just swedish meatballs and some cucumber salad. Make sure and check out the gift shop, and the cute goats roaming around on the roof
Great selection of tasty food. Fast and friendly service.
Fun place for breakfast but get there early or else be ready for a long wait
This place is a happy place, great food, great location and well...livestock and grass on the roof...what more do you want.
