REVIEWS OF Kazu IN West Virginia

Chip Vincent

Great little Tai and Japanese restaurant in an awesome small town on the Potomac.

Myron Schroeder

Great food and service. Crispy Basil Duck is to die for. We have been coming here for years.

Clark Kugler

Always have delicious flood and sushi. Service is freindly and fast.

Gerald Miller

Decent selection on menu, food came quickly which surprised me as they were rather busy. Cozy place - a good place to take a date, or meet with friends. Food was great, hot and fresh - not having sat in a warmer for a while. Will go again, no problem.

Christine McPherson

It was a good meal could have used more flavor and marinating on the tofu though.

Ryan Weddle

Food quality was ok but overpriced. When I asked for the check they insisted on “surprise” charges to make it vegetarian. Some other mishaps with the ordering too. I would not recommend this place.

Jessica Hambrock

The staff is friendly and fast. The curries are the best in the tristate area. ^_^

Lisa Babcock

wonderful food, great service, at very reasonable prices

Rick Lowman

Terrific Thai restaurant, great curry seasoned to your taste.

Daniel Claggett

Overall fairly bad experience here. I had red curry with chicken and my wife had green curry. My dish was pretty good but hers came out smelling like cat pee and tasted terrible. Will not be returning.

Alicja Reuben

Great sushi, Thai and Japanese food. Genuine flavor and fantastic service.

Jason Parker

Great home cooked feeling food

Me & a friend were attending a show at the Opera House in Sheperdstown & had no idea where to eat dinner after being told there was over an hour wait at the 1st place we stopped at. So we saw this little place Kazu across the street from the theater & decided to give it a try. It is a simple place but nice enough. The beer selection was very good. We were not sure what to get so we asked our server for some recommendations. He described a few suggestions to us & we made our choices. We were blown away at how delicious everything was! It's the kind of delicious that sticks in your mind for days after you have eaten there. The kind of delicious that you get cravings for there ever after. I had the duck basil & my friend had the chicken pad Thai. Both were out of this world but that duck is something I now MUST have. Been back several times & can't wait to go again! Highly recommend this place!

William Astle

The quality has NEVER wavered. Hands down the best Thai in the Panhandle(Except Sumatra, which is owned by the same owners as Kazu). Kazu has moved the sushi bar to the back because they've applied for a liquor license which means they'll have a bar upfront. The shrimp pad thai still ranks in the Top 5 here. Better than thai I've had in DC. NY and Miami.

Mike R

Great food and service.

Daniel Lee

Amazing crispy shrimp special... be sure to trade the usual rice for the wide rice noodles. OMG... soooo good with a Snake Dog IPA!

A L

Here's a staple of Shepherdstown that all need to try at least once. Kazu always exeeds my expectations by providing excellent service and great-tasting cuisine. Servings are plentiful and are certainly fair-priced. The environment is small but cozy and is typically crowded. On the weekends, one would benefit from making reservations. I've never had a bad or even so-so experience here.

Lea x

I really enjoyed the food and atmosphere. The service was great as was the food. I'll definitely come back if I'm in the area again.

Nathan Yessler

Favorite restaurant in Shepherdstown, food is always fresh and delicious!

Jack Young

Best authentic Japanese dishes and Thai food around. The service can be a bit slow but it is well worth it. Japanese lunch box is my favorite and the fried rice is the best I've ever had.

Franklin Nicodemus

Have not had a bad dish yet. Crispy shrimp was amazing, sushi was amazing, service was great

Matt Rogers

Curry chicken heaven.

Charles Dawson

The pad thai was very good, as were the appetizers. Our waitress was friendly and service was efficient. I am already looking forward to returning!

Teresa Nicole Saunders-Meske, Esq.

Great Sushi and amazing fried rice. Our favorite "go-to" local favorite.

Joe Garnreiter

The Seafood Pad Thai is amazing. Good service, well run restaurant.

M Sams

Another gem in this village. As with most Thai in the States, the fire is diminished but the flavors remain. Try the crab balls and crispy duck. Thanks Mary.

cathy b

Great place. Food is always freshly prepared and service pleasant. One thing, I would change the music. I prefer music that suits the cuisine/theme of the restaurant.

k hoover

Absolutely terrible service and the food is below average. We are sitting here as I write this review it has taken 15 minutes to receive my ice tea and ordered the shrimp and garlic sauce and it was just a degree above warm. I expressed the concern to the server and she replied I don't know. The server is way out in left field. I have been managing fine dining for 20 years and I consider this is a mediocre casual restaurant and this establishment needs server training and a tweaking of the food. Take careful consideration if choosing to eat here.

Mark Lannon

Good food, quiet location. Great for lunch and dinner. Have yet to be disappointed

Jeff Worth

We have been eating here for years (since they opened). We love the food and service. The Pad Thai is the best in the Tri-state area!

Scott Ayers

The best won ton soup I have ever had in my life!

Kristin Pettersen

WOW. I would never expect such a small town to have such an amazing thai place! It's very cute, clean, super friendly service, lovely decor. I had the Pinnaple crispy duck and OMG, it was seriously the best crispy duck I've ever had! Was not overly fried but had an amazing crunch to it, really tender, big pieces of great quality duck. Fresh veggies, super fresh, not too heavy or too sweet sauce. PERFECT. I also had the fried calamari as a starter which was also very good! I'm just so impressed by this place... I'm seriously willing to drive to WV from DC one weekend just to eat here again. If you couldn't tell already... I HIGHLY recommend this place!

Dave Gotz

New owners, way too expensive for what you get.

Dominic Randazzo

What Kazu lacks in ambience, it makes up for in the absurdly vibrant flavors. The drunken noodles were perfectly cooked and had just the rest level of heat. The Thai basil dishes were fantastic.

Malcolm Walton

The customer service is always prompt, awesome atmosphere, nice staff members. I will return again when I get in town.

Kaelea Gagnon

Things have changed since New owners but it's still decent! Prices went up alittle... Newly furnished inside. Sushi is great, food is still good quality. Went to Kome today... It seemed like an off day, not as good as usual but that's ok!!!

Ryan Moran

Great place! Very inviting and friendly staff!

jennifer jones

Love the food here!

Caleb Follero

I had the Pad Thai 10 out of 10 hot. Perfect blend of spice and flavor. Generous portion of chicken.

Samuel Delgado

Located in the heart of Shepherdstown West Virginia, this sushi joint might be that stop you take when deciding what to eat. It is also conveniently located next to many attractions in the area. Upon first entering this establishment, you are immediately greeted by one of the hostesses. Atmospherically, The place is quite fitting for it’s Japanese & Thai culture. Also notice the works of art framed along the walls; they are quite amazing. There is a sushi bar. They do not serve Sake. There is a very limited Ramen Selection. The Sushi was pretty good and made with generous portions. As for the Nigiri, it was also well made and the fish was fresh. I guess the most important factor is the taste of the rice; I’d give it a 8/10. Recommend :)

Emily Geisbert

We have been eating at Kazu for well over 10 years. It has always been one of our favorite places to dine in and get take out. My husband and I would get take out from here at least once a month and always get the same thing. We decided to get take out tonight as a nice treat and it was a terrible mistake. The vegetable spring rolls tasted like they had meat in them, but we didn't see any. They were mushy and not tasty. My miso soup was inedible. It tasted foul, the seaweed was very, very slimy, and the soup had no seasoning. I had to throw it away after a few bites. My sushi was awful. I have had grocery store sushi that was 10 times better then this. The rice was over cooked, unseasoned and mushy. The avacado was brown and sad. I am pretty sure an ingredient was missing from our crabby top roll, they were bland and the "crunchy" bits on top were stale and extremely hard. It was a very disappointing meal and I feel like what I am writing is not doing it justice on how awful it was. I feel so let down from one of my favorite restaurants.

Misty Cornett

This place serves the best Green Curry I have ever had! I love it. Service is a little slow, but the food is worth the wait. The decor is old, but who really care? Not there to admire the walls :) I recommend this place if your ever near Shepherdstown and want some great Thai food. My son loves the sushi too.

Jake Smith

A little on the expensive side but the sushi is superb.

Andrew Thomann

Great sushi and miso soup

James H

Dinner pricing is a bit steep and their hours of operation are just plain silly. It is good food, though. Service is on the slow side as others have said, but it was served fresh and piping hot. Lots of spicy options, too which is always a welcome sign to me.

Owen P. Standley

Fan-fricken-tastic food. This was our second visit. The service was less that desirable during this second visit. The waiter never refilled our water glasses, never checked on us after the food arrived, and came back 10 minutes after we were finished eating. Do not let this sway your decision to try this venue, the food is excellent and from personal experience over 2 week's time the service is 1for 2.

Fanny Chang

Nice little gem! The crab puff is not to be missed- a giant, 100% crab meatball that is breaded and lightly fried, served with a tasty curry sauce. Yum! Got the drunken noodles - very good and just mildly spicy. Also got the yaki-udon with pork. Great noodles but the pork needed more salt. Loved the toasted rice tea in the iron pot. Adorable!

Madaca 99

Really good food, great spring rolls. A little pricey, but not awful.

Tycho Aussie

The food is good, and so is the atmosphere but the tea is unusual, containing some subtle hints of sesame oil and rice. I am unsure if I like it or not.

Amanda Harvey

Amazingly fresh sushi, very friendly staff and chefs. Only criticism is that their crab and cucumber salad no longer had crab. And there was a little to much lava flow in the volcano roll. But, yum.

Elizabeth Lacey

Very nice

Julian Siefert

Great but a bit pricey

Scott von Berg

Fantastic prik khring, tasty sushi. Very good service. Close seating, good idea to call ahead with a larger group of 5 or more.

Jamir Humphrey

Certainly a place worth stopping over, the food is excellent and fresh, the pricing is reasonable and it is consistently well kept in here. Keep up the good work.

deborah schlosser

Best Japanese food around..amazing padtai and sushi

Bethany Worth

Kazu...one of my faves! Drunken Noodles w double veges!

Pat B

Our family has eaten here four times in the past year, have tried a variety of the menu, and we have not been disappointed. Great place, great service, and great food!

Keith Jonak

Best Thai around! Excellent Sushi. The Duck with Basil is simply the best. Don't pass up the Gyoza appetizer. I lived in the Far East for nearly 4 years and Kazu's always "takes me back".

Nikki Landerkin

Kazu has amazing and delicious food!!

LeaveMe Alone

After she wrote on the back of the receipt I'm sorry I couldn't tip you but you were a great server I had a family member come to my house crying about a skinny tall waiter who told her that because she couldn't tip she had to order her food to go from now on When I spoke to management they told me the waiters and waitresses don't get paid per hour they only make tips either way they represent your restaurant she told me to suggest to my family member that if she doesn't have the money to tip to order her food out I don't think that's right and I don't think that's good customer service Of either the waiter treating paying customers that way and the manager backed him up on it Telling her that if she couldn't tip that she needed to order out from now on

Richard Mulligan

Kazu Restaurant in Shepherdstown, WV--- Omgosh, the food is the best Thai food I've ever eaten, and ranks among the top ten best places I've ever eaten at, anywhere!! May I suggest, if you go, try the Tempora shrimp, and fried vegetables, too. The breading they dip both of these in, will have your mouth watering for more, and your taste buds, screaming in delight!! I'm not being overly dramatic, as it truly is some scrumptious food, and the portions are so large, I always have plenty to take home, too!! So do yourself a favor, and go to the best restaurant ever for quality food and outstanding service, as well!!!........Cissy M.

Gregory Winn

Great Tai food

Amy Carpenter-Driscoll

Great food, and very quick and friendly service! We decided once we walked in that we would take it to go, so they sat us at a table and brought us water while we waited for our order, which was ready in about 15 minutes. The menu is fairly extensive, and we were very pleased with the dishes we ordered.

Angela Nicodemus

Great Thai, Japenese, and Sushi. Atmosphere is relaxing and romantic.

Rania Peet

Pricey but worth it. Crispy Shrimp w/garlic and chicken teriyaki are the best dishes on the menu. The green tea is amazing!

Will Myers

The duck with basil, TRY THAT!!

Jim Babcock

Love it! The gyoza (pork dumplings or pot stickers) are wonderful! Usually they are served with plain soy sauce, which is too salty for me, but their is more complicated and addictive. I get the pad Thai and my wife the pad see ew and it always ranges merely great to heavenly. That slight inconsistency should probably lose them a star, but we always come back because we love it.

A Spice Below the Horizon

Great food, mindfully prepared with a good price.

Jed Marsh

I guess for people not used to alot of Thai or sushi this place would be great. The actual Thai food was alright but nothing I'd go back for. The sushi, not so good. Maybe I'm spoiled with good sushi by my local place, but even so I can make sushi rolls at home better than I had here. Too much rice and it tasted like it was either burnt or they added too much rice vinegar. The spicy tuna did not taste anything like fresh sushi grade tuna but rather like basic freezer or seafood department store sushi. ( yes there's a difference). Now, onto the wait staff, while I think they try to hire college students for staffing, which I fully understand and support, it leaves alot to be desired. They seems confused and the whole thing seemed a bit chaotic. They were friendly and as helpful as a new hire could be but still. I won't bore you with my actual story on what happened when I was there but the above is why I gave it a 3 star.

Meg c.

I have had green curry a number of times but never had curry that tasted like cat pee and smelled like cat pee. I really wonder what went wrong with this dish and why I did not feel well after eating it...my guess is that is was bad. I also got a spring roll and it was deep fried and really greasy, not what I expect from a spring roll. I will say they were busy so maybe this was the result. We asked the waiter about the ammonia smell and he said his gf called the green curry "with bathroom"...not a good sign. Be wary.

jnaholiday

Had the basil duck. It was extremely good, and I recommend it highly. Better than similar dishes I've had in DC and Philly.

Michael Shor

A nice Thai restaurant in downtown Shepherdstown, with a good selections of dishes. Kazu also deserves credit for accommodating the wish for foods without fish products, which can be difficult to deal with in some Thai restaurants I have been to.

Kevin Shirley

I always enjoy bringing my friends to this place to experience the awesome food.

steve haines

Tasty food, good service and reasonable prices.

Cadence Musick

Really delicious Thai dishes as well as Japanese dishes, and decent prices. Staff was so awesome, I left my cell phone there and they kept it for me until I could come get it the next day. They even charged it for me! I was so taken by this thoughtfulness. A beautiful business of kind people that should be supported!

Christine Olson

This place has a casual but classy atmosphere. The food is well prepared. The service is very good.

Kenneth Cox

Great food. Decor needs an update, but food tastes great.

Charlie Tang

Good food. EXTREMELY SLOW service. Like... Plan on sitting for 50% longer than expected.

Erik V

My wife and I stopped in and got the crispy duck and panang curry. The curry was great, the crispy duck a tad too crispy.

Jared Ferguson

The sushi rolls made me terribly sick

Edward Smith

Great Thai food, fair prices. Definitely grab some of their Thai Tea!

John Gonzalez

The Duck was perfectly cooked and was delicious. The staff was very friendly and accommodating even though they were busier than usual. Prices were reasonable, service was great. Don't let the small town feel scare you away...this place is the real deal!

Rob Robinette

Great food and service. Love the fried rice the most but most of the menu is excellent. Nice sushi bar too.

Laura Gillis

I ate here with some good friends. Several had food restrictions. The waitress was kind and patient and helped us choose the best things from the menu. I would highly recommend the restraunt!

Joseph Buckles

Very friendly service tonight. Really enjoyed our food and the atmosphere here. I highly recommend this restaurant. My favorite is their chicken pad Thai.

Roger Snook

Fun bento box lunches. Good sushi but even Better Thai.

Robert Johnson

Excellent Thai. The vegetable Panang curry was 'just what the doctor ordered' this evening. Reasonably priced. Even with a late arrival, the wait staff was gracious and accommodating. Highly recommended to my G+ friends. Add an IPA or two for good measure.

Megan Farrell

Came here for dinner. The green seafood curry was amazing. Wasn’t super impressed with their Pad Thai but we did order it for our toddler so maybe they made it a bit more bland. I would definitely recommend but also would suggest reservations since it’s not a huge place. We were lucky to get a seat since there was a theater festival in town that we didn’t know about. The staff was very friendly and understanding of our not entirely cooperative tony human.

Kerrick Reisbig

Best folks, tasty food. Love combining the basil duck and pad thai into a supermeal that lasts for days.

Dan Breeden

Solid Asain offerings, the price is a little on the high for the quality of food but overall a decent place to eat.

Marie Regnault

Good Thai food!

Shane Yarrington

Have eaten here for years! The best Thai food I've ever had. Keep in mind, I do not prefer Curry so I cannot attached to any curry dishes but I have had literally everything on the menu that does not have curry in it. They also have a sushi bar which is pretty good. my wife and I tried Thai food other places and say well this is good but it's not kazu. I had never tried or enjoyed tie food until experiencing it at this restaurant. They will custom-make dishes as well such as increasing or decreasing level spiciness or adding spiciness to a dish that doesn't originally come with any spice at all! The staff is always super friendly and professional

Mary Behan

This place is delicious! The crab puff has a really tasty sauce. They have great sushi also.

Stephanie Hayhurst

We love the basil tofu!

louanne Kramer

Not a great place for us. Order fried rice. The word was fried but it was like wall paper paste. Very bland. Service was fine but for us this was a one time deal.

Alex Noon

Called ahead to make sure their Thai Green Curry with tofu and vegetables was vegetarian (sometimes the curry paste has shrimp in it), and was told that it was. It was unmistakably fishy, and most definitely NOT vegetarian. Super disappointed and grossed out. Rice was overcooked and the curry tasted like fish sauce and not much else.

Q Shamrox

Crispy duck is fantastic. Best Thai mix outside of the beltway.

B Laurence

Yaki Udon- 5* Stir fry veggies (broccoli, mushrooms, zucchini, cabbage, onion) With thick rice Udon noodles With chicken, in a deep redbrown sauce. Just gotta put it out there, likely the best dish I've had in West Virginia, including my Black and blue burger on pretzel bun from Fat Patty's Barboursville. Deep flavors for complexity 7 Thai spicy. Next time I won't bother with the chicken, and just do full vegetables. Flavors out of this world very complete dish. The sauce is thicker than any broth not to be confused with a soup but coats all ingredients very well. Awesome experience. JOSH the server great. Three thumbs up Kazu, well done
