I'm sorry. I really don't want to talk badly about this place because it's been in Shepherdstown for awhile now and I have nothing but small-town enthusiasm for them to succeed as a business, but our experience there was just downright awful. My mom took my boyfriend and I there for lunch on his birthday on Sept. 22. There were 2 other diners in there at the time who were finishing their meals, but otherwise the other tables were empty. The town was bustling with people on the streets so it was a little strange they didn't have more business. So here are the facts of what went wrong. My mom and boyfriend got the egg drop soup and it tasted so sour and off-putting that they just pushed it aside after the first spoonful. The owner woman said it was the town water that made it taste that way, but Mom and Boyfriend disagree. Even my hot and sour soup tasted especially sour. Just like an incredibly bright flavor. It was weird. Then my boyfriend ordered a pork dish he was excited about and he received a completely different pork dish. The owner said the server thought he asked for that one because it was the most popular pork dish. My food was just like one level below mediocre and my mom didn't enjoy her meal either. The best part of the dining experience for me, outside of just spending time with my mom and boyfriend, was the view of the main street and the passersby, and the hot tea.

The service was terrible. The food tasted like a dirty grill and left a nasty aftertaste. Never going back.

We've been going to China Kitchen for many, many years. There have been a few disappointments... but consistently it's a pretty good meal. In the last few years, I think they have slowed down a bit and the food service shows. People say the owner is mean to them, but she has never been mean to me. Not once in over 15 years.

Nice atmosphere upon entry. No one was there when we went Sunday at 530pm (which was strange, rose a red flag). They treat you to hot tea and a crispy finger food after you sit down. There is a communal sauce that you can use for dipping (it's little gross becuase I don't know how long it had been sitting there). We were never asked what we wanted to drink but the server brought us waters anyways, which was nice, i guess. Food was brought out to us quickly. Vegetables were fresh and the chicken was fried crispy (it was good). There was a little too much sauce, however. About half way through our meals we begin to hear a clipping noise adjacent from our table. Turns out that the server was clipping her nails as we were eating.... (vomit). We lost pur appetite and left shortly after. I peaked into the kitchen and it appeared to be very clean (which is a plus). After this service, I will probably not be back. A lot of restaurants in Shepherdstown are great, however, this is not one of them. Food = 6/10, Service 4/10, Atmosphere = 7/10. Better luck next time China Kitchen. You are almost not worthy to set up shop in downtown (not being rude, but, you are giving Shepherdstown a bad name).

The general tso's was dry and old. The broccoli was over cooked and yellowish. The sweet and sour chicken was over cooked and dried out as if it were sitting in the warmer too long and was dropped back in the oil to heat it up. The only saving grace was the pre-made frozen egg rolls and the steamed rice. We have eaten from here before in the dining room and it was fine. But tonight's take out was awful. We usually eat Chinese from Martins in Martinsburg but tonight we were in Shepherdstown and figured we'd pick up from there for convenience.

First time eating the food here and my entire family agreed that this is the best Chinese we have had since moving to Harpers Ferry. Will go back!

China Kitchen is located in the heart of Shepherdstown, WV. From the moment you walk into this establishment, you can feel the vibe that it is an authentic Family Owned Chinese Restaurant. I was greeted by the owner and her, I assume, her daughter. Welcoming people and quaint atmosphere. I ordered the items that are typically harder to make the right way and the reward of getting it right is amazing. They captured the essence of the Spicy Bean Curd (Tofu) and the egg drop. The wonton soup tasted great, they must make their own wontons. Overall it was a great meal. Definitely recommend.

Wow....like...I've never ever ever ordered from a worse place. I hope someone really heads my advice and doesn't order from this place. I ordered $70 worth of food & three people including me got food poisoning. The shrimp smelled and tasted dirty. The meat was a mystery and rubbery and fleshy and didn't taste anything like it was supposed to ...Ive never questioned what type of meat I had eaten until this place. PLEASE like order from any other Chinese place cause I put my faith into the reviews here and was let down...more than let down I was SO upset. The food was so gross it stunk up the entire first floor of my house . I wasn't gonna write a review but I felt like I could potentially save others from awful food.

Best sweet and sour chicken ever...I eat there every time I'm in town visiting

Jeff Langenderfer

Good basic Chinese with large portions. Two appetizers and a shared entree is plenty for two people. The Szechuan tofu was really good.

Visiting family in town and our experience was exceptional. Food was hot, fresh, well seasoned, and flavoured. Service was quick and friendly. Haven't visit in quite a few years but will visit every time we're in town.

Always had good service. OK food. Not bad, not great.

I enjoyed their dinner options. The green tea is uniquely flavored, almost like they've added sesame oil to it or something. I decided that conventional black tea is the way to go when visiting here.

This has got to be the WORSE Chinese Food we've ever had. The General Tso's chicken was 10% chicken and 90% "other" and was cooked way too long. The shrimp fried rice was equally as bad. Shepherdstown is a small town but the ride to Spring Mills is well worth it.

When I'm in shepherdstown I usually have breakfast in the morning and then head back to the pool. We like to hit all the little shops on the main street. Several years ago I discovered the China Kitchen. It's kind of hidden behind the trees. You really wouldn't be expecting great food at this little restaurant, but you'd be wrong. Every time I ordered something there I have thoroughly enjoyed it. I make sure that before we leave shepherdstown I have a take out order from the China kitchen. Don't let the outside for you. The food is good.

Three people, midday. Not busy, maybe 3 other tables. Took forever to order, but chatted with members in my party. Edamame was cold, but that's the way they serve it, apparently. Another didn't think soup had much flavor. Fair meat steamed dumplings. Just kind of disappointed overall. Won't be back, ever.

John Pearrell

Simply good Chinese. I've never had a bad experience here in 10 years. The owners are sweet and loving people and they care about their customers.

Benjamin Kirchhoff

Horrible general taos chicken, how are these people even in business. Please dont eat here I was ripped off for 22 dollars. There food is absolutely horrific.

Kendra Harvey

Food was less than satisfactory. Flavor missed the mark. I ordered for takeout and the lady laughed at me when I asked for chicken dumplings. Then I looked at the menu to see it is listed as “meat dumplings”. That’s a little sketchy...

Michael Bussard

Good food.

Hot & sour soup was a bit too sour for me, but I still liked it. The veggies were extremely fresh & crisp, and my lo mein was good, but the rice was a bit dry. Very fast and good service, and great location!

margaret landis

Food was delicious and ample portions. Nice and freshly cooked. Price very reasonable

Tori Kulikowski

Honestly not even one star. The service was awful and so was the food. Fried so much it was chewy. Felt immediately sick afterwards. Oh and does NOT have sushi even tho the sign says so. Save your money and order from Awok down the street or Evergreen in Hagerstown. RIP me and my sisters stomachs....

Trini Flowers

If your used to big city Chinese food. You won't like it here. Spagetti noodles for Lo Mien is unexceptable. Fine shredded pork. No flavor. I tried adding duck sauce and soy sauce. Still didn't fix the taste. I guess if it's all you have then it's fine. I'm just used to going to ghetto get good Chinese food. Customer service was EXCELENT tho.

Amazing experience, wonderful food, nice workers, and amazing commercials. 10/10.

My dish was way salty and with liitle pork. My wife's dish had small shrimp. The same dish in our home town has large shrimp and better taste. Overall not a positive experience. I hesitate to recommend this place.

Amelia Jones

I've been here a couple times. I went here on 02/16/2018. I ordered the sweet and sour chicken. They usually put the sauce on the side. This time my chicken was drenched in sauce, which made is soggy. The egg rolls were over cooked. This is not my first bad experience here. Update 4/22/19: Today the beef in the beef lo mein tasted burned. The chicken for the sweet and sour chicken was burned to a crisp. This will be my last visit here.

amy senay

I love the food here. The crab ragoon are the best. Mmmmmmmmm and the general tso

My #1 place for Chinese. Dine in or take out always fast and friendly service

Greatest Chinese food in the area, but the staff is hit and miss. They've forgotten our sides before, and I recently called to ask if they would be open today and they said yes, however when I showed up they were not. Very disappointing.

Ordered takeout and the food was ready in 15 minutes. Woman confirmed my order and owners/staff were eating when I came in - several takeout orders prepared for customers to pick up. Great food, excellent prices, served with thanks and a smile. Would recommend if you’re in the area and want Chinese.

Vincent Caiazzo

Somtimes the food is ok but the attitude of the younger woman working there makes it not worth it she is consistently rude and has no customer service skills do yourself a favor and font go

Clay Herzog

This is one of the best Chinese restaurants I've eaten at in this area of the country. The Chef/owner is excellent, and their menu is quite diverse. Their hot and sour soup is probably the best I've had anywhere. A few years ago I would have given them a 5+ star rating, but it seems to me that the consistency of their quality has slipped slightly in the last few years and the food just hasn't had the same (consistent) wow-factor for me. That having been said, China Kitchen is still better than any other Chinese restaurant (that I've tried) in the greater Hagerstown-Martinsburg area. Also, very fast service, and reasonably priced. Extensive lunch (special price) menu.
