We were visiting Virginia Beach. Terrapin did not disappoint. This restaurant was our nice night out, and everything was absolutely amazing. You instantly walk into a great atmosphere with friendly staff. We were early, but our table was ready.The second we walked in we were welcomed like family. The service is unmatched. The food is exquisite. The ambiance is cozy. We felt welcomed immediately and the food was to die for. We started off with the cheese board. It had two cow milk cheeses and one goat milk cheese, apples, homemade spicy mustard, candied pecans, homemade jam, toasted bread, Granny Smith apples...so many good flavors. For dinner I had Fresh homemade clam pasta, and he had short ribs that practically melted in your mouth. The presentation was out of this world. Dessert was a chocolate "Gift for you" which was the perfect size to share. If you want beach fine dining, this is your place. The food was so fresh and appetizing.

This restaurant is the pinical of the saying lots of flash and no substance. Me and my wife went to this establishment for my birthday. When we arrived the hosts had given another group of dinners. After we made the registration 3 days in advance. Leaving us with no other choice but to leave and go to another restaurant called watermans which was surprisingly great. The next day the manager of the restaurant informed us of his condolences in regards to the issue that happened the previous day. As well as informing us that our entree’s would be covered fully. Witch me and my wife took them on there offer. We made it our new reservation to be greater by our waiter that was well mannered. He offered us overrated tap water in which he tried to justify with a long winded explanation of said water that it is water from Virginia that goes through a five step purification process which is only one more step than regular tap water not including if you have a filter at home. To tide us over the host left us both a single slice of sourdough to eat for approximately 30 min we We eventually got our menus to order to see that entrees have there own very own very limited section which made me and my fiancé feel duped.but we were not deterred we made our selection. But instead of the joy of delecious food hitting the table a wave of apprehension poured over our faces. As we pick over our food my wife ordered a simple hand burger which was Luke warm in the middle, bland, as well as tasting like cheese when she ordered it plane. Then my steak frites was the most bland steak that I have ever had in my life, it was dry, and very bland. I tried salt, pepper, and even ketchup. But nothing could save the train wreck that was terrapin. For the price of this bland food I don’t understand why or how this place could could have a 5 star or even a 2 star review. If you would like to waste money on people being paid to be nice to you than look no where else than TERRAPIN

Beyond expensive, but great. Farm to table. Left feeling full but energetic instead of bloated and tired like most restaurants. I believe this is because of their food quality. Duck and lamb were great. Even the kale was good.

My wife and I had a great experience! We made a reservation online which was super easy while the restaurant wasn’t open. Waitstaff: Fantastic, super professional and knowledgeable about the entire menu and drinks! FOOD: We got the lamb and pasta. It was perfectly cooked and did not disappoint. (Crudo) Was easily the best thing we had that night! It was flounder and tuna. I had no idea flounder tasted so good!! (Oysters) i wouldn’t not recommend, the size and flavor was pretty weak. See attached picture. It was $2.00 an oyster. I love eating oysters so this wasn’t a first time try and didn’t like. They were missing something maybe when washed it wasn’t with a salt brine. DRINKS: We got a few different cocktails and we’re very impressed!! I can’t remember the names but i still remember the taste! PRICE: Fair for quality and quantity.

We went for out anniversary and it was amazing. We ordered 2 of the 4 course samplers and all the food was exquisite and delicious. The waitress Narissa was the best waitress I've had in a long time. This was probably the best food and service I've had in a while. If you're in town stop here.

Fantastic staff. From start to finish. Very professional, courteous, and helpful. From the phone call for a reservation to table delivery. Fantastic. Food...I can say the same. Spot on portions. Both looks and taste amazing. The steak was perfectly done and the sides on the plate went well with it. Menu was personalized for our anniversary. Wife was delighted!! PS... Try the Sangria. It's made in house and very rich in flavor.

The food and staff were great, One problem is what I call plop and smear also it is a set menu. You will need to reserve seating. Bring your wallet with you the plop N smear will cost you $75.00 dollars a plate plus extras and tip, parking is free the lot is small also used by other business use the lot.

The food here was excellent. I had an amazing appetizer and desert which were the Frito Misto and the Creme Brûlée. These were excellent, but the entree. The only issue i had was with my entree order which was the Steak Frites. This is a steak with French Fries. There is no twist or a spin on the fries, they are just regular french fries. The steak had a reddish tint on the exterior, had an odd smell, and tasted as if it were wild caught meat (gamey). It is possible I chose the wrong entree, because my wife loved her Bouillabaisse. Overall i enjoyed the food.

I actually went last May to this gorgeous restaurant with a small group. We had initially made the reservation because they were a nice higher end place which was the theme of our trip, but also nicely reviewed already and upon sending them a message on Facebook, they said they would be happy to accommodate my friend's celiac- an allergy to gluten. Our expectations were high and we were not dissapointed. It seemed at first glance to be a great local favorite and there was no dress code that I could tell. We came dressed to the 9s but I could definitely come back in something more casual (but nice). The atmosphere was classy and comfortable, but this trip was about indulgence and they were more than willing to let us play out our fantasy of being rich and glamorous. The man who seated us actually offered us different colored napkins so they wouldn't leave color on our dresses. An incredible step above and beyond that was completely unprompted. We had some fabulous food to go with our outfits that night. The butter was shaped like a little turtle to go with the bread that was served with their incredible and sophisticated options on the tasting menu. Much of the food was described as local which was nice for us as visitors to the state. They also have a great wine selection with who I'm fairly sure is a sommelier, otherwise they just knew their wines very well. Of all the places we went to at Virginia Beach, their desserts were the best. They mentioned having a pastry chef whose name I really should write down. We had a gorgeous chocolate shelled treat that was melted at the table and one that was so satisfying that I broke the "No phones at the table" rule so we could have pictures of our desserts. I have no idea what this incredible apple dessert was called, but it was creamy and delicious enough where we actually asked for MORE of them to take back to our hotel. I have never asked for a second dessert to go, that's how incredible this was. They were plated in to go boxes like we had ordered them to sit down and we had them in the middle of the night with some wine and it was one of the best decisions we made the entire week. I'm looking at returning to VB someday in the next few months and Terrapin is one of the places we HAVE to revisit. We look forward to seeing what new treats and food they'll be serving when we return.

One of the best dining experiences I’ve had in a while. Came here with my wife for our first year anniversary. Staff was friendly and attentive. Decor and lighting was beautiful. I do wish the tables were a little wider but it didn’t impact our dinner in a significant way. I had a parsnip soup and seafood risotto to start. The soup was delicious, smooth, with no grain or lumps of any kind. The risotto was cooked perfect and it was probably the best thing I’ve eaten at a restaurant since I took a trip to LA last year. It was absolutely gorgeous. My entree was a classic bouillabaisse, a bit under seasoned, but all the flavors were there. I will be returning very soon.

Going here was my first actual experience with fine dining. I went with my girlfriend for dinner, and it was the best dinner I've ever had. The atmosphere was very nice and the service was impeccable. The food was extremely delicious and fresh. I got the Mac and cheese with truffle which was good but not great probably because I'm not really a big fan of Mac and cheese in the first place. I then had some soup I think it was the beet soup and it was thick and rich in flavor, very delicious. For my entree, I got the trout cooked medium rare which was the chef's recommendation, and it was one of the best things I have eaten. The fish was perfectly cooked, nice sear on the outside but still somewhat raw inside, and I could definitely taste the freshness. My last dish was the creme brulee and it was perfectly done, nice caramelized crust on top and it was the perfect sweetness. Overall, I can't wait to come back, and I know consider it as one of my favorite restaurants.

Took my girlfriend here for our 1 year anniversary. They sat us at this awkward booth/chair table thing that you typically find in Denny's. We are both larger than your average person, so a little forethought could've been used I guess, but I stuck it out even after being whacked in the head with plates and patrons trying to get around me and the other person sitting 9 inches behind me. We had our orders in when they sat another couple right beside us (1 ft space between table) and the dude kept blowing his nose and basically killed my mood at that point. They brought their food out before we got our first course...pretty sure they messed up our order with theirs somehow, but that would be too much text to explain. BUT even after this inconvenience and the wait...the first course, pumpkin curry, was amazing. The second course was good, I didn't really appreciate the shrimp/risotto taste as much as somebody else, but it was still good. The scallops where hands down the best I've EVER had in my life. Almost gelatinous, with a seared top on a bed of 2 different types of mushrooms. My girlfriend got the octopus which was cooked very well, blindfolded, you probably wouldn't guess it was octopus, and she had the pork belly ravioli which was also really good. Dessert was good, didnt really wow me, but the coconut sorbet was nice (also probably the best value pound for pound on the menu) Our waiter was nice, his French accent made it easier to spend a car payment on food and service. If they would take one table out of there to make a little more space, or sat us somewhere with some more room or privacy, I would've given them 5 stars.

Loved this restaurant. A bit pricey but to me really worth it. Farm to table food that was new, exciting and complex without missing the mark on flavor just to be innovative. I had a lamb dish that was tender and had that perfect seasoning that left salty flavors on my lips. The drinks were great and the atmosphere was mature and full of the eclectic style that shows a design in tune with a passion to present a dinning experience and not just a place to eat. Loved it.

Absolutely wonderful place. I really don't know where to start. The service was world class. The bar staff was attentive and knowledgeable. Our food server was the owner.... There are a lot of mid-range eateries in VB but there are very few quality high end restaurants that are worth the money. Terrapin is definitely one of the best that I've been to in VB.

I gave a 4 star rating specifically for the food and feel of the restaurant. The food was spectacular from the 1st course to the last, and I enjoyed the feeling I got once I entered the restaurant..welcomed and that my business was appreciated. But that is strictly the basis of the 4 star rating. I will give credit where credit is due, the duck was perfectly cooked. But I will never return to this establishment, why? In this day and age a lot of people throw the "race" card around lightly, but for me perception is reality. my reservation was for 8 pm. There were tables seated around us to the left, right, and in front of us between the times of 9-9:45. At that point we'd been seated for nearly two hours and had only received our first course. While the tables around us were working m their second, I tossed it up to it being a busy night..until the table to our left received their desserts at the same time as us. I was perplexed but again, brushed it off. My last straw was when the manager/owner whoever it was made it a point to visit every table around us to check and see how their meal went and if everything was ok. Again, not pulling the race card BUT perception is reality. And the icing on the cake we received a forgotten goodbye after we had already excited the restaurant. Amazing food, but I'll spend my money elsewhere.

By far my favorite restaurant in Virginia Beach! The food is delicious and never fails to impress! There is always a new menu and I’m always impressed with the chef’s creativity and innovative menu choices. I haven’t been to another restaurant in va beach that has compared. One of the best places to go in Virginia Beach for a fine dining experience. Never had a bad meal here. Definitely need to save room for dessert as well.

Super disappointed with my experience here. We chose one fine dining restaurant for our trip to Virginia Beach and this was no where close. I guess I am use to better restaurants in Toronto but the food was terrible for the price. I ordered a medium steak and my steak was burnt (as you can see from the picture). It wasn't just the steak though, both the potatoes and the broccoli were also burnt. The restaurant was not even that busy. I just don't understand how the chef could even serve this or how the waitress, who didn't even come to see how our food was, even served this terrible meal! I ended eating it as I was there with three other people and didn't want to put a damper on the whole evening but this place was terrible.

Very interesting and sophisticated menu. Food was excellent. Butternut squash soup had a ton of great flavors that blend well. Risotto also had a unique combination of flavors. The cheese board was great. The duck and fried chicken were also really good. Scallops were also amazing. Even the fresh cooked bread was delicious. We ate on the enclosed patio which is a really great and cozy space. It's covered and dog friendly.

Visited here for the hubby's and my anniversary. Everything we had, we thoroughly enjoyed. We shared the charcuterie plate for the appetizer. For dinner, I had the lamb Bolognese pasta. The husband ordered a burger. With their happy hour we saved $7. So, of course, we had to spend that savings on dessert. We were not disappointed with their strawberry shortcake!

Bit crowded inside, fairly close to the table next to you. That alone will keep me away. Ordered fish, specifically asked that it be fully cooked, arrived undercooked. The waiter, attentive until the meals arrived, did not come by to check on our food. Another polite worker took my fish back to be completely cooked. It did come back cooked with an apology. Did not notice anything profound about this "farm to fork" concept, except, perhaps, a lot of butter on the final cooked product. The basil ice cream was very good. An observation: It would appear the staff is more attentive and courteous to their "regulars" or however their judgement on patrons is decided. I was not inspired to return and will not. Final comment. go elsewhere.

If I could give this restaurant 6 stars I would. The food is amazing, I had the salad and the bouillabaisse, creme brulee for desert. Cocktails are super tasty, had a couple of old fashioned and they know how to make it!! The barmaid was smilling and friendly. I highly recommend the place. Not a place to bring your kids tho.

We visited this restaurant twice in a span of three months. The service was outstanding both times. The food was excellent both times. The standard wine pairing is ok however the more expensive pairing in good. The atmosphere was excellent during our first visit however it was poor to fair during this visit last night. The seating during our first visit was spacious and comfortable. This time we were put in a cramped table almost on top of other people. In the end, we have decided not to visit this restaurant again. There are so many farm to table choices now and atmosphere, for us, is important. Terrapin's comes up short for us.

Great find in Virginia Beach. Just a few minutes from our hotel and easy parking. The staff was wonderful and the food selection was amazing. Did not really know what to start with, so they offered to bring us a sampling of their recommendations for what we like. So we got a great sample of a few dishes with paired wines. Just WOW. All were fantastic. A must do.

The food was good, but does not live up to the cost. The service was good and attentive, but flawed with pretentiousness. My biggest issue was the comment made early in the service. Our server encouraged us to order items from each course so that it could come out in the order the chef prefers us to eat. While this is okay if you want to tell your patrons how to eat, but make sure that you don't place rich foods at the beginning of the meal. We started with a creamed crab and corn soup which was tasty, but it was so heavy and rich that we didn't feel quite right for the remainder of our dining experience. We basically started out meal of with a large cup of heavy cream and starch.

Went for a romantic dinner. Our sever was excellent and accommodating. We had the "terrapin experience" tasting menu and waine pairing, and everything was excellent. Perfect dinner choice. Mike was an excellent, and knowledgable server. Will definitely come back for our next special occasion.

This is the best restaurant I have been to in Virginia Beach. I appreciate their mission to create food from local fair and pair it with local wine. We came here in the winter and they had the 4 course dining experience with sommelier wine pairings. This was the best experience. In the summer they changed their menu and had a 4 course tasting menu. This is where the chef chooses your courses and you can add the wine pairings and everyone at the table has to participate. I love these experiences but it is hard if you are dining with anyone that has a shellfish allergy. They cannot participate so then you can't enjoy this experience just because someone could die if they ate the food the chef chose. This is a large reason why I won't be dining at Terrapin anymore. My boyfriend and I used to love coming here for the 4 course dining experience but we can't enjoy it anymore because he has a good allergy. It is very disappointing.

We were blown away by the service. The food was a step above anything I have had in the area in a long time. Had to get a few pictures of the appetizers and desert but even they can’t do the food justice. The main was even better looking but I didn’t want to keep taking the phone out in such a classy spot. Next visit we’ll try the patio seating. Thanks for the attentiveness of our server. She made sure we had everything we wanted. Even if I did stray from the menu slightly. Probably one of the best restaurants at the beach. I can only come up with 2 others that would come close. Very expressive, but the food reflects it. I had a filet mignon, with an amazing soup that I can not recall and dessert. Even their butter is top class and shaped like little turtles.

Not impressed. Atmosphere very casual not elegant. I Went to this restaurant for my wedding anniversary this past weekend. Food was ok but they are VERY stingy with food. We were told by waitress that they encourage customers to share food. I thought it was romantic so I was anxious to see the portion sizes. Salad was literally about 1cup of lettuce with a few capers sprinkled on it. It was enough for 1 person. There were about 6-8 MINI ravioli on a shared entree plate. Long story short, we left there starving. We ended up eating at Subway right after. Will not return.

My wife and I went here for dinner for her birthday. The service is absolutely first rate. Our server, Nerissa, who apparently was new to this restaurant and had a shadow, was fantastic. She was friendly and knowledgeable. She made our evening very pleasant. The rest of the staff was just a attentive and courteous . We enjoyed our food, well prepared and attractively presented. My steak was perfectly cooked. We will be returning.

So i booked this place for our 1 year wedding anniversary. It was our first time going to this restaurant and from the minute we got there it was great. We sat at the bar first before we were seated and of course I had no idea what to get. I told the bar tender what I’m into but I’m so indecisive. So She told me hey let me make you something I think you’ll like. And she hit it. It was great! Dinner was pretty good too. Maybe could of used alittle more seasoning but the ceviche was great! I think the main reason for this review is the attention to detail they give their guests. Everyone that serviced us knew it was our anniversary. That rarely happens. And they gave us complimentary glasses of wine to start. I don’t think I’ve felt so special. But it gets better. When our menus came, they printed on the menus happy anniversary mr and Mrs Couillard! I was blown away. Im like no this is not happening.!! That had to be the sweetest thing any restaurant has ever done. I would tell anyone to go here . I’d take something like this any day over a cheesy song! I just want to say thank you !! I’ll recommend this place for sure. Cute first date spot to guys !!

My husband and I were celebrating my birthday. The service was excellent and the food far exceeded my expectations. I had the Baby Beet Salad as my first course. This plate arrived as a colorful masterpiece. The varying types of roasted beets with goat cheese was delicious. My second course was the truffle Mac & cheese. The homemade cork screw pasta & creamy cheese sauce was great. Then I had the cauliflower steak with caramelized onions & capers. WOW! When our waitress brought my Hearts of Chocolate dessert there was a single lit candle on the plate and we were in awe of this beautiful work of art. This was truly the finest dining experience I've ever been priveledged to enjoy. I would highly recommend Terripin Restaurant.

We were blown away by the service. The food was a step above anything I have had in the area in a long time. Had to get a few pictures of the appetizers and desert but even they can’t do the food justice. The main was even better looking but I didn’t want to keep taking the phone out in such a classy spot. Next visit we’ll try the patio seating. Thanks for the attentiveness of our server. She made sure we had everything we wanted. Even if I did stray from the menu slightly. Such a warm fuzzy feeling kind of place. The food is excellent, perfectly executed and full of flavor. Wednesday nights are my favorite, the fried chicken dinner is unlike any other fried chicken I've ever had. I think they brine it before they fry it, it's so tender and perfect, there's also something about the breading or batter on it, it's not traditional but I would like for it to be! The truffle mac n cheese is so yummy too. That beet salad is not something you want to miss either! Don't share it!!

This restaurant has a nice contemporary feel to it. Fresh oysters, a rockfish catch of the day, these are the kinds of items you'll find here. You can eat a la carte, or do a prix fixe arrangement of four dishes. Interestingly, they do not shrink the portions if you are having four courses. The dishes are attractively plated, and the waitstaff seems to be trying hard, though they may be overworked on a busy night.

Went for my 5 year anniversary. Not exactly a button up and tie setting but we didn't feel out of place being dressed up either. The wait staff was absolutely outstanding. It was a busy night and the wait for our food was longer than expected but the staff was very attentive. We chose the tasting menu and every dish was amazing. Strongly recommend if you are in VA beach.

Nice little upscale place for a special night out. I got the Terrapin Experience which is a 4 course meal for $60, it was quite the deal for all the food we got. It does require full table participation but it is worth it, and that's what I would recommend to anyone who wants to go here.

Terrapin is consistently perfect. Excellent cuisine, excellent service. Casual elegance at its finest. The menu is often changing due to the obsession with local farm-to-table and sea-to-table focus. My favorite example is the octopus they offer in season: most restaurants turn octopus into used chewing gum, but Terrapin cooks it via sous vide for hours, then sears it at the end-- resulting in the most amazing dish ever! The new pastry chef is AMAZING! Be sure to order the Tree of Zen dessert!

Our neighbor raved about the mussels appetizer.All our entrees were top notch...the lamb Bolognese, short ribs, rockfish, and vegan risotto to round out our phenomenal meal! No complaints here!We finished with sorbet, ice cream, and creme brûlée and full tummies!!Would definitely recommend. Service was top notch. Water was refilled continually. I enjoyed terrapin a lot. My only experience eating there was for their Valentine’s Day special 6 course dinner and it was delicious. My complaint would have been that it was very cramped and you were inches from the next couple but I think that was because of the event. The food was exquisite and the drinks were strong. Very polite staff!!! Only thing that is ruins it is the poor inferior which lacks class and is just plain ol run down looking . It needs an update badly but the food is on par with any top restaurant in the area.

Our party of 7 was not a fan of the food nor the service! The prices are ridiculous for the portion size! Our server made us ALL feel like we were a burden, judged as if we would not tip accordingly, and had no interest in giving great customer service. This is a great restaurant. The food was excellent (my wife decided that it wasn’t that she didn’t risottos but that no one had ever prepared one that she liked until here - in this case loved) - we shared two starters and a main course - all three were great. The presentation was that each of the appetizers was split and presented to us on separate plates and I only wonder why that was not done for the main course. The service was excellent indicating a good staff and great management.

Took my wife there for our 23rd anniversary over the Memorial Day weekend. Based on the previous reviews I though I had struck gold. Was I EVER wrong. Small, I do mean fit for a toddler, portion sizes - complimentary sour dough bread was ONLY 1 piece that was about half the size of an English muffin and we had to request more! After the 2nd request we got the message that they were on a sourdough bread conservation campaign. The ravioli entree, though tasty, was tiny in size and I counted 7 pieces. In short, we left there looking for another restaurant to fill our lingering hunger. (So you can get an idea of what I'm talking about, I am 5' 9" and weigh about 175lbs. No contender for the biggest loser contest by any stretch nor am I scheduled for anorexia counseling). And yes, we did eat a whole meal at the next establishment and were finally satiated. PRICE - The price of the food would have been perfect had the portion sizes been more accommodating. However, I would consider it on the high side given our experience. SERVICE - adequate AMBIANCE - The terrace was nicely appointed yet the clientele was mixed - some wore super casual clothing (shorts, sandals) to semi-formal (sport coat, evening dress). The terrace faced the street which took away from the look and feel of the restaurant coupled by the passing noise pollution (Memorial Day weekend w/Harley's revving down the street don't exactly make for a romantic dinner - unless you're a 'hog' lover)

We were at Terrapin last night for a birthday dinner. We started off at the bar with a pineapple daiquiri and a habanero tequila old fashioned. Both drinks were fantastic and the bartender was delightful. Once we were seated at our table we had the beef tartar which was very nicely done. The mustard emulsion gave it a nice “next level” flavor. For mains, we each had one of the highly recommended pasta dishes. I’m not going to say which ones, because you need to try them all!! The house made pasta is cooked perfectly and has a very nice texture. All of the flavors blended perfectly with the sauce to create a very balanced dish. Overall I would say that Terrapin delivers a great dining experience with their very polite and helpful staff and amazing culinary delights.

I really enjoyed the restaurant, atmosphere, and staff, however, I didn't love the food. The seafood pasta flavor was unmatched to the overpowering taste of lemon. The shrimp within the pasta didn't have much flavor on its own either. The Bouillabaisse was pretty good, but wasn't filling for the price. The blend of spice and flavor worked well with all the varieties of seafood within the plate.

This is my favorite fancy restaurant in all of Virginia Beach. If I need to come somewhere for a birthday or a date or special occasion, this is the place I think of. Want to bring me out for a nice meal and surprise me or make me happy? Bring me here. If you tell them when you book that it's a birthday or celebration - they will print a special menu with your or a guest's name on it and then roll it up as a keepsake to take home. It's a cute, personal touch. Again (my theme) this restaurant sources locally from farms and nearby suppliers so the menu is tempered by what is available and in-season but there are some things that are always on the menu. The chef has burger and taco nights and you can join the mailing list to find out about monthly culinary events. They have a lovely patio you can sit on in warmer months that is covered and has warming lamps. I love it. My favorite items on the menu are their risotto (the flavor and ingredients change but it is always delicious), pasta (house-made), and scallops. Really it is all good though. They have delicious coffee in a fine french-press and ever-changing desserts with delicious options - last time I had a dark and orange chocolate bomb that was AMAZING! They really take pride in service here and the staff are polite, prompt and efficient. This is the kind'a place where you'll get a black napkin if you are wearing a dark outfit instead of white, they'll take your coat at the door, they ask if it's a special occasion or if there are allergies when you make your reservation, and if they try to bring your food to the table while one of your party is in the bathroom, they'll sneak off and keep it warm in the kitchen until you have returned so they can give you both your plate at the same time. I love it.
