Fantastic! beautiful restaurant, we particularly like the upstairs lounge, perfect for meeting friends. The declaration is one of my favorites. I know a nice decor when I see one. Recommended.

The whole experience was fantastic. We met Mario on the metro. He was so casual when he recommended his restaurant. Everything was great we had the trout.the risotto, ribeye and the gnocchi. The salads were also great. The service was also fantastic. Go Go Go........

The octopus is delicious and the pizza was very impressive too. I was told the burger was so far the best they tried in DC. Check it out

Deepak K. Gupta

Average food with long waiting time.

Franck Cuny

The gnocchi were delicious.

Steven Beil

This place was great. The atmosphere is nice the wine bar is extensive and the food is awesome. They have a wide array of choices from specialty personal pizzas, to a burgers, to trout, to pasta. It is a little pricy and you do need to call in a reservation unless you want to eat at the bar.

Ken Greenfield

Matthew Saunders

Amazing food. Endless mimosa is truly endless. Chris kept our drinks full and the brunch fun. I highly recommend for good quality as well.

Alan Mehrwein

Brandon Metcalf

Very nice staff and great wine menu. Also, the decor was fabulous. A great place to go for a nice night for some drinking. The food however, was extremely bland and a bit over cooked or too mushy. I don't think they know that salt exists.

Chris McGuinn

Rachel Beaird

Steve Edmondson

Amazing service. From the management down, I received personal attention well beyond my expectations.

Had a lovely dinner with the server Lindsey last night. She recommended a lovely white for my friend and I and helped us navigate through the charcuterie and cheese. We went ahead with a charcuterie board of manchego & 1 other cheese and the duck prosciutto & prosciutto do Parma. The board was delicious however the bread that comes with the board is lacking something... either their focaccia needs to be grilled longer or brushed with garlic/EVOO to give it flavor. The charcuterie was delicious and was served with a nice amount of prosciutto di Parma and thinly sliced pieces of the duck prosciutto which melted in you mouth. For main my friend got the spaghetti vongole & I had the mint papardelle with lamb Ragu. The mint papardelle were definitely interesting and had an enjoyable taste. My friends vongole had just the amount of clam broth at the bottom helping the pasta to not dry out & remaining flavorful. If you’re visiting for dinner and are sensitive to cold I’d suggest to get seated farther inside as the restaurant did get a little cold but that’s just expected of winter time!

Wine. Apps. Food. Service. The best.

Katie Thompson

We had a reservations at 7:45 and were running late. I called in and they moved it to 8:15 with no problems. Chris was an amazing waiter and gave great wine recommendations. Freak Show is the best! We are in town for the weekend for Philadelphia and we were able to get some good suggestions for other places to try. The only downside is the Margarita Pizza was the only meh aspect. It could’ve used more basil and garlic. Otherwise we had a great time and would recommend this to friends and family.

Ernest V

The food and the service was excellent

Visited during a quiet winter evening. Love the upstairs lounge room with a beautiful view of the Capitol and ample amount of comfortable seating. Fantastic wine selection and fast, friendly service (although, we were pretty much the only people upstairs). Great atmosphere and fair prices. We did not eat, but the menu seemed to complement the wine bar vibe. Chic, swanky place to meet friends in this neighborhood.

Wayne Evans

Great selection of wines

Cheryssa Jensen

Great restaurant! I went with a friend for restaurant week. We got the arugula salad, the seafood chowder, the salmon dish and the steak dish, and lemon ricotta beignets. Everything was great, especially paired with the wine that was on special that evening. I'd recommend going.

Stacy G

Typical DC watering hole. Good ambiance and service.

Eric Rollings

Only had drinks. Wine pour is heavy. Staff super friendly.

Dennis Catanzano

Really nice wait staff. Interesting dishes.

Peter Fernandez

Upscale atmosphere with a West coast vibe. Service was excellent and prompt for a large lunch group. Food was tasty, simple (sandwiches, pizzas and salads) and well prepared.

Amanda Lehman

I attended a catered event, the food was locally sourced and delicious. The wine was enjoyable and the atmosphere helped me enjoy a normally excruciating work dinner.

Amy Hamilton

Great service and selection.

We enjoyed lunch...mushroom burgers, mac-n-ch lobster, & pizzas...all great! You get what you pay for, DC good isn't cheap, but most places here are priced like this...this was worth it!

John Tomberlin

Really enjoyed the food and wine, unfortunately the beer taps were not working when I stopped in.

Fresh salad paired with ice cold Arnold Palmer and unique soups make Sonoma stand out. Wine director is terrific - new vinos come in on Thursdays!

Sonoma is a great wine bar tucked away on Pennsylvania and walking distance from the Capitol. Their menu may be small but the cheese platters are full of flavor and the flatbreads filling that getting 3-4 items to share with the table is a great weeknight dinner...and goes well with any of their wine.

Blake Fitzgerald

While I only stopped for drinks, I have to say the staff is just great. They truly make you feel welcome and offer great service. I will be back.

Masentrox C

Very good and they speak English and Spanish

Seth Denbo

Good food here for a business lunch. The only real drawback is that it's noisy, so if you're with a group it can be hard to hear the conversation.

Overpriced! The lamb burger with parm fries was $22, pretty good but a bit dry. Spaghetti with clams was delicious, but $25 for a small serving with only 4 small over cooked clams! The fountain poured ginger ale was $4.50!?! Why!!! Wine and service were good.

I have lunched here many times and always found the food tasty. Most recently, I went there for happy hour. The second floor lounge, which is chic and enjoyable, features $5 glasses of red and white wine. I ordered a three-item sampler plate (olives, fried calamari, bruschetta) for $9 and was delighted at the sizable platter of eats I received. I'll be back soon! (Visited 4/15/14)

Wendy Stengel

Go for wine and a cheese plate. You'll be happy.

One of the best burgers in DC. The pizza is also pretty good. If you like octopus, the appetizer here is a must. Great wine and chill vibe

I can't speak to dinner but the lunch was rather good. The "Sonoma" BLT was nothing more than a rudimentary BLT the the Brussels sprouts side was amazing.

We popped in to Sonoma for lunch and were pleasantly surprised. The service was excellent and atmosphere enjoyable. The food was outstanding! I had a chicken club with a side salad and it was delicious. I'm usually apprehensive about ordering a brioche bun because they are so heavy and filling but this one was perfect. Also reasonably priced especially for DC. My husband had the Seven Hills burger and it was delicious. I hope to be back before I leave the area.

Lara Ruth Ziobro

I absolutely love this place!! I love that they have normal portion sizes (I believe they refer to them as appetizer sized), which helps to make it more affordable and somewhere I like to go to more since you don't end up with a ton of food you can't eat. I'm a big fan of the amish chicken with pasta. And their wine selection -- fabulous. Reservations defintiely are recommended. I haven't been disappointed here though yet. Perfect ambiance.

Craig Rowlings

Phenomenal experience! If you're lucky enough to have Nick as your waiter (the guy is a consummate master), ask him for recommendations, he just nails it every time. Really incredible restaurant with a wine selection and atmosphere that is tough to beat.

Good restaurant, with a wide ranging menu and the food was decent. However we booked a table for 8:30 and the restaurant closes at 9 so all felt very strange and rushed. We were told it is a problem with the booking system.

Mike Rhode

I'm a big fan of the meatballs and polenta.

For months, I have heard more and more buzz around this wine bar on Capitol Hill. My wife and I decided to check it out on one of our weekly date nights. We had dinner at home and just wanted a drink. Sonoma was perfect for that. The first floor has their main bar and places to eat. The upstairs is set up like a lounge with plenty of couches and chairs to sit at. I cannot speak for their food, but they had great wine selections. We asked our server what he recommended and we both took him up on his suggestions. It was a home run! We loved our wine choices (I had their gewurztraminer). Definitely go with a group and enjoy their lounge if you want a chill, yet classy evening on Capitol Hill.

Had my rehearsal dinner here. The location was the closest to the church, so it was really the only option for a nice dinner within walking distance. The food was good and the service was excellent, but the communication with the event coordinator, Hilary, was very difficult, which made it kind of a sour experience. We had about 50-60 people from out of town who were all planning to meet us Friday night after the dinner, and they have the perfect lounge area for everyone to mingle and have drinks. We opted not to formally reserve the area so that people could open individual tabs since you have to pay the tab on one bill to reserve the area. Hilary assured us that we could grab any available space after dinner at 8:30 PM. Her exact words in writing were "If you want guests to pay for their drinks individually, then I won't reserve the space in advance, and your group can just come over to the bar after your dinner and grab whatever couches or high tops in the room happen to be available." However, when everyone starting arriving, they immediately close down the lounge and tell us we have to go to the downstairs bar. It was very embarrassing since all my out of town guests were standing around in a dark lounge. It was only 8:30PM, and we had 50 people ready to spend money in the lounge on overpriced drinks. So, we moved downstairs and had to stand at a crowded bar around other people having dinner. We gave them so much business that night, and all we really got was. "Sorry for the miscommunication." It was very disappointing on a very special night. I just wish she had told us there was a chance of it closing, so we could have planned an after party at a better location with better service (like Hawk N Dove).

Went in for a bottle of wine...sat at bar. Friendly service and good wine selection. Complementary beignets were awesome! Food coming out of the kitchen looked great. We definitely need to go back for dinner soon!

OK the wine was good. The spaghetti vongole though - spaghetti boiled to death and then brought reluctantly back to zombiedom by a pile of chilli. Seven clams. Six were chewy, one hadn’t opened in cooking but was still served. Fortunately no-one asked if I’d enjoyed my meal.

I LOVE this place! Food, wine, and service is great! The upstairs lounge is really cool, too. The pork dish I ordered was perfectly cooked, and so delicious! I will definitely be returning to Sonoma Restaurant + Wine Bar!

Host: Welcoming, let us sit at the table we requested (I made sure to ask if it would throw off server sections and she said not at all) 5/5 Setting: Dimly lit and warm, not too noisy. Liked the ambiance 4/5 Server: Terrible. It was my expectation at a wine bar that the service staff should know about wine and be willing, maybe even feel directed (!) toward helping explain the wine program and the various offerings. I ordered a pre-designed flight as my server was mostly missing. The server lined the flights up on the table and proceeded to walk away without telling us which wine was which. I had to call him back and ask him, only for him to go back to the bar to find out. The server also brought my partner's salad before the wine (another, maybe unreasonable, expectation of mine). After we finished, the table was bussed and the server basically threw the dessert menu on our table without saying anything. Only because we received what we ordered: 1/5. I've been given more thoughtful service by my Doordash delivery person. Food: Good. Nothing special. Octopus, broccoli, wedge salad and burger were good. 3/5 Wine: Good. Nothing special. I only found out after we ordered that servers could help us create flights. I found the flight to be mediocre. 3/5 Overall: A restaurant that bills itself as a wine bar should have a staff that is knowledgeable and engaging. That was not apparent here, in fact, it was the opposite. I even felt like I shouldn't be sitting at the table. That's not my expectation of good service. If you want to go to a wine bar, go to Cork. Both of my experiences there were outstanding.

Lovely place and staff. I would recommend booking as we came in at 6 and it was packed. Eating at the bar was still lovely but if you want a table booking is the best option.

Stopped in for a glass of wine and some lunch after checking out the surrounding sites. The wine was fine, but the pizza was honestly not good. I ordered the Margherita and the dough was chewy / didn’t seem cooked through. It was pretty flavorless as well and kind of reminded me of frozen pizza reheated :/ def not worth the price.

This is one of the best meals I've had in DC. We started with a cheese flight, which had the perfect portions, and the server recommended wine pairings. Entree of sweet potato gnocchi with chicken was seasoned perfectly and tasted like little heavenly pillows - perfect fall dish. Service and atmosphere are outstanding!

Noah Teates

Great food, great service.

Great wine selection at Happy Hour, good nibble food & great atmosphere!

Food was excellent but expensive. Wine was very good and reasonably priced. Good service. Expect to pay well over $50 per person.

Sonoma is a cool restraint with outstanding atmosphere, great food and find drinks. The service has always been impeccable. I've enjoyed happy hours and special events at Sonoma - it's a quality DC establishment

Liz Dombrowski

Decent service but the food wasn't anything special. Squash risotto was over cooked and brussel sprouts came out soggy. They were happy they let us camp out and talk for awhile after our meal. There was no attempt to push us out the door.

I ordered online through GrubHub. A burger medium with fries. No salad. It arrived with no fries and with salad. The restaurant tried to explain that it wasn’t salad but the burger toppings. The lettuce was shredded and there was bite size pieces of carrots and cucumbers. And salad dressing. It was most definitely salad! And the medium burger arrived dry and charred. I sent it back. When my order arrived the second time, it was still so wrong. There was no salad and burger toppings actually looked like burger toppings. A vast difference from the first time. But I specifically requested that even though I didn’t want a bun that I still wanted the special aioli. There was none! The burger was kind of medium, but still charred on the outside. There were fries, but about half of them weren’t cooked. Seriously, they crunched! Disgusting. I called them back. They gave me the name and email of the manager. I emailed her and absolutely no reaponse. I may have forgiven this fiasco as a one time event if I’d actually received an email. But nothing. Do not recommend ever.

Sonoma is THEE place to go for a great meal on Capitol Hill. Pastas are exquisite as is their cocktail, wine, and beer programme. Great staff, too! Went most recently to their annual crab feast. A must do event during the summer!

I usually stop by here for the Italian Happy Hour. You can have wine for $5 a glass and 3 small plates for $9. I've had the meatballs which were tender and delicious, burrata, and the charred octopus. Also have shared a great charcuterie tray with friends nice variety.

In a long block of pretty average places, this stands out as a unique favorite with comfy couches, great 2nd floor view of the street and traffic below, and a wide complement of whites and reds. The $5 happy hour selections are superb. The food is minimal, so this is a place to go before or after dinner, but the cheese and charcuterie boards are good enough to keep you tided over until the next glass.
