Right from substituting oil for animal fat for frying to removing meat from their dishes. The service was great and the food was delicious. We got 5 appetizers and everything was excellent. My seafood loving friends enjoyed the fried oysters. The wine selection is vast and not as pricey. I skipped dessert but got an extra corn bread cause they were sooo delicious.

After waiting at least an hour since our food was ordered, our waiter stopped by to tell us that it would he a bit longer. Apparently the chef decided to prep our entrees himself instead of informing us that they had run-out. This led to an hour and a half wait for our entrees without even a visit from our waiter aside from bringing our bread and appetizer. Obviously this was frustrating, and the only reason they got two stars and not one was because the quail was quite good, despite the dish being slightly too sweet. The shrimp and grits...not so much. I've had more than a few different varieties of shrimp and grits and never had it taste like this. I don't know if it was the brand of tomatoes used for the sauce, but it tasted like a pizza sauce. It was all I could taste. My point in all this is to say that given the price point there are surely better options around. I usually give places a second chance, but this visit will likely be our one and only. On a positive my girlfriend did enjoy her mixed drinks.

Eaten here a couple of times. Once at the old location and now at the newer location. Food is always enjoyable. I thought the atmosphere was better at the older location. The service is pretty attentive. My only negative was that I wanted an appetizer that was from the "bar" menu but apparently I wasn't allowed to have that while I was sitting down dining...strange. it's not like there's two separate kitchens.

Upscale restaurant with delicious and original cocktails and some of the best food I've had in Richmond. The shrimp and grits especially are crazy good. The prices are about what you would expect for a more upscale restaurant in Richmond, but it's worth it as a treat or date every once in a while.

Since many restaurants feature a limited menu and smaller portions during Restaurant Week, I had decided not to review any meals this week. Then we went to Julep's and I had to break my resolution! Our appetizers of mussels for my husband and arugula salad for me were tasty and the portions were good. For an entree, he had mahi mahi with a sweet tea glaze while I opted for the steak with boursin butter, snow peas and potatoes. Both entrees were extremely flavorful and the sides were plentiful and yummy as well. Our final courses were pecan pie for him and apple crumble for me. He loved the pie and found it to be lighter than most pecan pies, perfect after a good meal. The apple dish was also delicious; I especially liked the peanuts in the oatmeal crumble as they added another great note to the flavor profile. I heard a waiter tell a group near us that Julep's Restaurant Week menu is like a "greatest hits" on which they don't skimp. I heartily concur...it was a fantastic meal!

Came in with a birthday party at 8:30pm. Aside from myself, all of my party was from out of state, QUITE boisterous, and didn't seem too aware of the time or that we needed to order before the kitchen closed. My party actually didn't order entrees for a whole 45 minutes after being seated, and in spite of my party's lack of overall restaurant patron tact, our server was extremely tolerant and gracious. The appetizers and entrees were excellent. The server even made a surprise banana foster, table side over a portable burner, for our birthday gal. It was delicious. We left the restaurant 45 minutes after close, and still, everyone was very gracious. Excellent service!

Julep's food deserves 5 stars, it is amazing! However, when I went for brunch on Sunday, our service was awful! Our waiter acted like we were just another annoyance to him. He ignored us on several occasions when we would speak to him and only acknowledge us when he wanted to. We were a group of 5 and all of us felt like we were doing something wrong just for being there. One of our friends had a severe allergy and as she was explaining it to the waiter, he just started walking away and said "okay". Then, he came back and put a what she was allergic to on her plate! He never apologized after she reminded him or anything. A manager came to apologize and that is when we learn what his name was because he was so unfriendly that he never even told us. The guy never even smiled or even pretended to be friendly in anyway. I might go back for the food but I hope they get some better servers or maybe some training for that guy!

Great food and service. We had the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer and I had the shrimp and grits for my meal. Wonderful flavor, fresh and authentic. The chef was even able to accomodate my friend's special dietary requests.

Was hoping for more. We had to wait at the front stand for several min. and eventually sat ourselves with menus and wine list. It was another 10 min before our waiter walked over with water.... For not being busy, this was irritating. Ordered pork belly app which was ok, it just wasn't right. One end was dry, the other end was better. Had the chicken for dinner over rice and beans, which again, was good, but nothing memorable. The price, for the meal, was my major issue. Just not worth the thirty bucks for an entree. I would have been more satisfied at 17-22 dollars. Overall, nothing really jumped at me to make me want to come back.

Made reservations to celebrate my dad's Birthday! It was our first time there, and everything was fantastic! The reviews on their bar were spot on, the drinks were excellent!! The food was delicious, the desserts to die for, and out waiter was nice. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because my mom ordered the shrimp and grits entree, and she was only able to eat the grits because the shrimp were extremely spicy!! I should have assumed being a true Southern place that entree would be spicy, but maybe it would be an idea to indicate it on the menu for guest to know before hand. Mom's mouth was entirely blistered the next day, and remained that way the entire week, but she did say that minus the spiciness her dish was very good! Lol

We had a pretty good experience here overall. The staff was friendly and helpful, but the food was a little lack luster for me with my food allergies. A lot of components to the few vegetarian dishes were premade and could not be altered to accommodate my allergies. My meal was okay, average to my experience as a person with allergies. My family enjoyed their meals, but the vegetarian options for some of us were limited. I would eat here again if someone else really wanted to go, but I unfortunately wouldn't choose it myself.

There are a lot of great places to eat in Richmomd, but this was one of the best experiences I've had in a while. The servers are friendly and knowledgeable. The decor is perfect for a night out or a business dinner (as was our case) and the food and drinks are inspired and delicious. I was overwhelmed by the options on the menu and have a habit of letting the server pick for me in these scenarios. He brought me the duck, which I would not have picked, and it was the best duck I have had. Anywhere. Will definitely be back and would highly recommend.

My wife and I had a delightful date at Juleps. The asparagus soup was delicious but the fried oysters were heavily breaded and over cooked. The filet was wonderful and perfectly cooked. The crab cake and fried green tomatoes were excellent. Service by a waiter named Derrick was delightful. He was very attentive, friendly, fun and professional. The beignet dessert was also delicious. The setting and atmosphere were very nice. A great place for a dinner date.

Our party of 5 called last minute on Saturday at 8 and they were able to get us a reservation for 8:15. We were greeted, seated and our waiter proceeded to review the menu thoroughly, making each dish sound as mouthwatering as the previous. Our meal at Julep’s was one of the best we’d had in a long time! The sturgeon special was AMAZING! Can’t wait to go back and try the bananas foster! And we WILL be back!

Julep's is one of the more hyped spots in Richmond, so after eight months of hearing the blabber I decided to pull the trigger. Thank goodness people can't seem to stop talking! The food was really scrumptious (fried oysters for the app and duck confeit cassoulet as the main course), my gin/grapefruit/peppadew cocktail was light and refreshing, and the atmosphere of the place was amazing. From the bartender to the candlelit room, I would say that the experience of being there was almost as nice as the experience of eating there. A real must try for all Richmonders.

Fish gumbo was good. Shrimp and grits unsatisfying. Im not a fan of nuclear size shrimp. Too large, tough, and chewy. Not enough grits. The amount of grits was disproportionate to the other elements of the dish. Hint: the grits are also the star of the show.

I had the pork belly appetizer at this restaurant while dining with some friends. The pork belly was delicious and stringy. It was not nearly as tender as described. The flavor was good and if not for the cost I would try it again. The wait staff seemed bothered that our group of five entered the establishment. While waiting to be seated the waiter rudely pushed his way through the door while telling us to move. He then sat us as he was doing multiple jobs and seemed upset that we asked questions about the menu. After a few snide remarks my group decided to leave after appetizers and not stay for dinner. We went down the street to a friendlier restaurant with a more accommodating wait staff. Juleps may have been around for awhile and survived a location change but if they continue to allow that kind of service I don't think they will make it much longer especially not at their price point.

My boyfriend and I was there tonight for dinner for my birthday. I understand it is restaurant week, but the service was not so good. He was friendly but not caring. Never asked if we wanted another glass of wine or another drink from the bar, never asked how's our meal so it made it very uncomfortable and by him walking by several times really made it annoying, and not saying anything...especially when we enjoy top quality places. Lastly the ladies bathroom was a mess! Well this was my first time going and most likely my last.

But we came for dinner, and we had some nice cocktails to start, then some delicious fried green tomatoes for appetizers. I got the roasted cauliflower for an entree. Excellent! Service is outstanding! Friendly, helpful waitstaff! The food was to die for! Traditional Southern menu with some creative, inspiring twists! Not good for vegans and only a few vegetarian options, but there are some really good seafood and meat options. Appetizers are wonderful. This is the kind of place where you tell them it is your anniversary or birthday ahead of time when you make the reservation and they will print happy anniversary or happy birthday at the top of your menu at the table. We really enjoyed our experience there. Highly recommend for special occasions and when you feel like treating yourself!

I took a musician friend of mine to Tarrant's Cafe when he was performing in Richmond. Our waitperson was gracious and friendly and helpful in guiding us through our lunch selections. Each of us has a local draft beer and fresh seafood dishes. The food was perfectly prepared and scrumptious.

My friend and I were looking for a restaurant close to CenterStage as we wanted to eat and then just walk to the play we were seeing. Since CenterStage recommended Julep's and the menu looked good (although pricey), we decided on Julep's. I made reservations for 5:30pm, and we arrived on time. Most of the tables were empty, and the hostess took us straight back to a table by the kitchen. We didn't accept that table and the hostess very impolitely told us it was either that table or a high top in the bar. When we questioned why we couldn't have one of the 2-top tables not occupied, she replied that those tables were reserved for other times. We ended up at the bar table; not what we wanted, but felt we wouldn't be able to find any other restaurant within walking distance in time to catch the play. Service was sporadic and we didn't have the same waiter twice. We ordered the steak and were told it would take at LEAST 30 minutes; they weren't lying. When we finally did get the food, the steak was decent, but the layered potatoes tasted like they had been warmed up in the microwave and the asparagus was cut up in tiny pieces with no heads, just stalk. The bill was $100 and definitely NOT worth it. I will never go back to Julep's.

The food here is incredible. Tony was a phenomenal server (both times)! He thoroughly explained all the menu items. It is pricey but so worth it. Fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese are a must! Atmosphere is nice and more spacious than it appears on the outside.

We had questions he answered, he was friendly, polite, & exceeded our expectations. The appetizer- fried oysters - were so good. I thought we were definitely in for an incredible meal. Plus the corn bread they served tasted a little bit like jiffy. I was excited. My wife got the steak and I ordered the shrimp and grits. I was told I had to try it. Wow. It was terrible. I never send stuff back, but I had to. The gravy/sauce was so bad and everything was so salty. I received some sort of half chicken meal they talked about on a bed of rice. How could you get that wrong? Still tasted bad. The bacon was so overwhelming. I was trying to be nice since it was me and my wife's anniversary. The waiter could tell I wasn't please, and I even asked what that strong gross after taste was. They apologized for the bad food but did nothing to compensate for it. I was still charged the hefty price - for a meal that was underwhelming. Very underwhelming. I was just hoping the banana foster dessert would make up for the poor dining experience. I felt bad - but neither my wife or myself were too thrilled. Didn't want to hurt the waiters feelings because he made it right in front of us. We will never go back. Especially since they didn't at least offer a free dessert. The dessert alone was $14. We would have been better off just going to Arby's.

Dinner with a friend on a Wednesday evening. Made reservations an hour ahead of time just via phone. They took our coats, and offered us a choice of seats since they weren't too busy on the weekday night. The clientele was mostly white collar and evening dress types, though some were in night-club attire. The service was prompt and attentive, but not obtrusive. I had the crab cakes which was served with grilled vegetables, the goat-cheese cheesecake, the fried green tomato appetizer. The food was excellent! I recommend this for a nice night out with a good friend or date, or with business associates you want to treat well.

I was so excited about this place...booked all night, great yelp reviews - I was happy to see they were finally being analyzed by zagat....However, it took forever to get our food and the manager argued with us about how long it took to get our food. I don't even know what to do with that...apparently we were on different clocks. Anyway, Richmond appears to have a long way to go to get into the "Big City" service levels...and by the way dessert took 20 minutes. I guess the south is on a different time zone...

Wow, the food and drinks here are amazing. They have a great selection of beer; I was able to order a Bell's barleywine. Appetizers and entrees and delicious, and filling portions. The wait staff is exceedingly attentive and helpful, but be prepared to spend a pretty penny here.

We had purchased a groupon for Juleps and there was a mistake made in the reservation which forced the groupon to expire. When they realized the mistake was on their end they bent over backwards to make it right. On to dinner...the food is always good and the service is second to none. I look forward to going back.

Julep's has gone downhill since it moved locations. My wife and I used to love to eat here when it was in the Bottom. Our dinner tonight was very disappointing. My wife had rockfish, which was served with bland white rice. I had steak, which was undercooked and a bit gristley. The wine list was pretty limited. The service was good, but the food wasn't worth the price. There are many better restaurants in Richmond.

Very pleasantly surprised. Delicious meal with impeccable service. Went with a big group and everyone loved it. The only thing I would change is the bananas fosters...the hard cookie seemed out of place.

Waiter Al was great , service above normal , menu had nice variety, but the special was outstanding. Disappointed they ran out of bananas foster for dessert. Compliments to chef and staff.
