REVIEWS OF Ivy and Coney IN Virginia

Pierre Spence

Awesome place to chill and watch game. Great game deals. Including free pool.

Corijona

We came here while we were in town because we are huge Cubs fans. The bar was really nothing special. There was some Cubs decor but nothing over the top. The drink prices were decent but the atmosphere was lacking. It is cash only and they did have an ATM so that was nice.

Henry Schmale

One of the absolute best dive bars in Washington DC. They have a fantastic beer and a shot combo for $6. And an amazing sandwich called da beef. It's slightly spicy and lacks cheese, but it has this amazing sauce that makes up for it. They …

Curt Barnard

A cool new spot in Shaw. It has a bit of a "work in progress" vibe to it, but I think it adds to the atmosphere. A great quiet spot to go have a beer and be able to talk to the people you are with. They have food, but it didn't seem terribly impressive to me. Fine for bar bites, not great for dinner.

Andrew Isett

Nice dive with a Chicago theme. Liquor lockers can be rented, though I stick to Stroh's.

Helen McCulley

You can smoke inside!! Yes. Quick service, nonassuming, pool table, website tells the games they will be playing, and just plain fun.

Josh Franklin

I guess I'll slightly object to some these reviews. This is definitely a dive bar, but it's purposely constructed to feel this way cause this place is only 2 years old. It's cash only, and the upstairs is crowded with no AC. On a hot summer night it can remove some momentum from a bar crawl. I waited 10 minutes alongside an empty bar for the barkeep to return so I can choose from 4 beers. To be fair everyone I know seems to love this place. It's just not for me.

Robert MacGregor

Great dive bar, cheap beer

John Be.

So good. ask for the slutty grandpa

Kyle Siebert

Pretty good dive bar. Homesick Chicagoan? Want to make your DC friend do a shot of malort? Only thing off is their giardiniera they use yellow onions in it which gives it an off kinda sweet tangy profile. Might even taste good to you but it just isn't like giardiniera from home (which shouldn't use any onions). If you do want a jar in DC buying it from Potbelly's is your best bet.

Justin Hyde

Great hole in the wall bar. My favorite part is the ability to get a locker. You can leave bottles there and drink from them each time you go.

Mar Media

Nice

Dennis Sendros

Fantastic neighborhood bar with a large, covered roof deck. They've got a Chicago theme, so if you're into Chicago beer, hot dogs, or sports teams, this is a great hangout. For a while they were allowing people to buy bottles of liquor and store them behind the bar in their name. Not sure if they still do it, but it's a great way to become an instant regular.

Marco Castillo

Excellent

Casandra Parker

Ivy and Coney is a sports bar.... but a sports bar that is a step away from being a dive bar. Both fine types of establishments in their own rights, but I just wish that Ivy and Coney would stop calling themselves a sports bar because they are just barely that. They have television and a few sport memorabilia on the walls but everything else screams dive bar. The dark lighting, the small area the whole bar takes, the quality of food, the type of local neighborhood people that frequent it, all of it says dive bar. They have a modest selection of beer and a some easy to make food that does the job, they are not gourmet quality, but they fill you up. Come here for a quick drink and maybe a hotdog but don't expect to watch a big game here and have a great experience.

Gwen Shearman

Perfect neighborhood dive bar. Only takes cash.

Brian Waldorf

Cheap drinks, friendly staff. This place knows what it is, and doesn't pretend to be anything it's not. Great little neighborhood dive. Don't forget to bring cash!

Stacy T

Went for the Cubs game. Cheap beer, good vibe.

Nathan Bobinchak

The rare (in fact only) bar I've found outside of Chicago that serves Malört. In that sense, the greatest bar outside of Chicago.

Joseph Valentine

Classic dc dive, where you can smoke in the back room if you want. Food is bleh. The value is in the experience. Good mix of professionals and drunks and hipsters and regular folk. Usually a game on the tele. Its literally among the last of a dying breed. Get there while it still stands. Cash only.

Chris Leis

Great "dive" bar feel. With the new roof addition, it's a great place to watch Detroit/Chicago sports.

Tom Jennings

Great neighborhood bar one of the few places you can get a Chicago hot dog in DC. Try the Old Style(ish) where the"ish" is written on the tap with a sharpie because they could not actually get Old Style beer! But it tastes the same! Great staff. Cash only.

Craig Thackray

A great low key hide away amongst the shiny new developments in Shaw

Janel Felice

Downtown Detroit coneys, not Detroit coneys. More Chicago than Detroit. Other than that, it's cool.

Jesse Scott

This place is SO rad! A divey Chicago Bar in DC that sells Old Style, Stroh’s And Malort. And their Chicago dogs are amazing! I highly recommend this spot if you’re looking for a little piece of Chicago heaven.

Tim Barrette

Went to watch a Michigan State basketball game at this Detroit- and Chicago-themed bar. It's a dive, not a sports bar, so understandably there are not many TVs. Of the two TVs in the main room, one was playing Blackhawk hockey (Chicago themed, I get it) and the other had the NFL (not Detroit or Chicago) which was on at virtually every other place in DC. Bar tenders wouldn't change the station so we left. Disappointed the bar didn't hold up the Detroit side of things. Looked like a cool place, though.

Randy Hill

Hot dogs, women, booze, Eric B. And Rakim playing in the background. Nowhere else in the District.

Benjamin Lehar

dope spot with cheap beer and cool atmosphere. Super laid back but not gross.

Esther Adetunji

Fun place, but something's lacking for me

Joey P

Decent food, decent vibe. Beer is well priced for the neighborhood.

Kenneth

Place was small, food was nothing special, bar tender was rude and unpleasant. With so many great bars I'd avoid this place

Kimberly Kruse

Rude bartender!

Oliver Peckham

Great, dive-y digs, cheap beer, and good food. The food's cheap, too, if you get one of the hot dog and drink deals!

Walter Einhorn

Chill, low key, cheap drinks and dogs! Would like to see some classic cocktails as well.

John Zale

The Longmont Potion Castle of DC bars. Please go here.

mike bennett

Cheap n divey

Evan Carlson

Classic dive with good, simple food. Don't expect salads though. Cash only

Dan Joseph

No frills but excellent service. Went for a late lunch and early beer on a Sunday afternoon. The "roof" is more a room without a ceiling and a lot of windows along one side but good enough to get some sun and fresh air. Food was tasty. Note that the place is cash only. If it were crowded might get cramped and noisy.

Virgilio Larralde

Casandra Parker sucks: go Cubbies!

Susan Austin

Dive bar cheap beer heavy pours on mixed drink but not much mixers

Eric S

I like this place, but they've ripped me off on drinks multiple times. They don't offer a "well" whiskey, and their "pop" shots are $4 for their cheapest whiskey. I ordered a couple of these for my party, and then I ordered a few $7 "full size" shots. The "full size" $7 shots were the same size as the mini "pop" shots - they even poured into the mini pop glasses. The bar was charging me $3 more per drink for the "pop" option - essentially stealing money from me and lying about drink sizes.

Wayne Brown

Chicago and Detroit in one place. Coney Dogs and Chicago Dogs in one place. Old Styles and Strohs in one place. A real dive bar in DC (my favorite). Theres always a game on but it's also a perfect spot to meet up and socialize and …

Chris Malafis

Pool, video games and great/cheap beer.

Johnathan K

Great place. Cheap beer, good Coneys

Melissa Reitkopp

The place to bed during the holidays, just the right amount of shabby with a fun vibe... Midwestern

Jake Grover

Bartender tried to steal my cell phone. University of Michigan bar. Total dive, feels like a crappy college apt.

Jonathan Shafer

Classic American bar. Cheap beer and good company. Menu has everything it needs and nothing that it doesn't. It isn't home, but it's a pleasant reminder of it. Midwest hospitality and grit to spare. I hope they keep things as they are. I'm a fan of the place and will visit again.

RobotxOriginals

Waited forever for the guy with dreads to finish his cigarette and come back up to the front bar! Also Josh is the worst.

Paul Meyer

Awesome dive. Don't be turned off by the grit. The food is legit.

john lawrence

Cool spot. Dive bar for sure. Reminded me of 6 guys sharing an apartment in college lol. FOOD WAS AWESOME. Way more than just hot dogs. Booze options are limited to one of each liquor. Don't come in to be picky. You'll lose. Enjoy the spot for what it is. It's either your style or it isn't.

Jared Thomson

Get out of here. happy hour combos of either beer and a shot OR beer and Chicago dog for $6. Best deal in DC.

Antonio Santana

Visiting for the first time recently the food is banging the drinks are cheap what more could you ask for!

Matthew Kostecki

Nice dive bar feel. Our bartender was great. Being from Chicago, I have to say the Italian beef was pretty bad. Seasoning wasn't right and so little meat.

Brian Zupruk

A simple, classic cash based beer and hot dog bar with Detroit Tigers and Red Wings loving owners. Just expanded to include a much more stereotypical dc roof deck, so it draws that crowd too on weekends.

David McNitt

HACK THE PLANET

Mick Taylor

It's a dive bar... What else do you want.

Elliott Jones

Awesome Chicago themed dive bar. They have a great selection of gourmet hotdogs. The nachos are and chilli fries are quite delicious.

Shelby Drulis

Fun and cheap Chicago themed bar.

Nick Unger

The best dive bar in town.

Noah Wolfe

Five stars if you are a Chicagoan or Detroiter (or even just a midwesterner) and appreciate a great dive. This place feels like home. The place to watch the Cubs or Tigers. Great for other Chicago or Detroit sports events as well. You're coming here for the beer you drank back home and to cheer and cry with fellow fans.

Corey Husak

A Chicago dive bar transplanted into DC. Come here for cheap drinks and good company

Brian L

One of the best bars in DC. Good cheap beer and a friendly atmosphere

Kyle Hood

Great dive bar, friendly bartenders, nice selection of bar snacks and quick bites, neat outdoor patio. good prices on cheap beer. Chicago/Detroit theme.

Hardy Kim

authentic chicago/detroit vibe, food, and drinks. down to earth and very welcoming bartender. a definite must for real midwest folks (and anyone else who appreciates a good time).

Brett Bowers

This might be my favorite bar in DC. The hot dogs are great, the food and beer is super affordable, and they have free peanuts and a roof deck.

chris allen

The new outdoor patio must be experienced. This neighborhood bar has great beers and food with lowkey vibe.

Sam Keyani

By far my fave bar in DC. And to be clea,r I am not one of those hill intern transient types. Born and raised in the capital city- find me a better hot dog!

Amanda Ampey

Such a cool bar. Starts put as a very hole in wall bar but if you keep walking back, it opens up into a very bright amd open bar with many more TVS. There is also a cool place in middle with couches and barber chairs that is in between 2 bars. I am from Chicago and husband from Ann Arbor so this is the perfect place to come cheer on our teams.

Ted Masten

Cheap, just how I like it. Go blue

Jeremy Grimes

Awesome place for the DL

Fred Velasquez

Great neighborhood bar with good selection of beers and great atmosphere.

Shawn Wimbush

Great place, Great drinks and Great Owners!

CCS 762

Outside bar is cool. PBR on tap!

Sean Harper

DC doesn't have a wealth of dive bars (a term I use in an incredibly positive context) so I'm thankful for this little taste of Chi town.

Matt DiNuzzo

A great dive bar to grab a quick cheap drink at.

German Diaz

Cheep beer, cash only

Adam Farnik

Great atmosphere, great prices, good food.

steve kyle sean miller

Sam Mertins

Best hole in the wall in DC.

Brock Manville

Convivial!

Chuck Salvo

Great spot for beers and sports. Great setup, good beer.

Alex Lott

Cheap beer, good food, awesome atmosphere. It is a cash only bar so keep that in mind and try the mystery shot!

Brian Fojtik

I dig it. Front is a classic dive bar, back room/patio more hip and mod. Only four stars because it's a Cubs and U of Michigan spot. Go White Sox and Brewers and Go Badgers!! Great place.

Dane Wilson

One of my favorite bars in DC. If you're from Chicago or the Midwest, stop in, have a shot of Malort, and make some friends.

Heman Gharibnejad

Good bar food, good beer prices, good atmosphere! Hipsterish!

Bob G

Perfect bar for good price. But the noise was too much..i almost went deaf.

David Ando

The go to place for Chicago fans especially the Cubs or Blackhawks. Cheap beer ( or great Goose Island) and especially the Chicago Dogs and Italian sausage sandwiches.

Michael Dobbins

Dive bar with a friendly atmosphere.

Devin Hartman

Love da bar, da owners, and da food. Great Chicago eats in a blue collar atmosphere that's hard to find in DC.

Alyx Mark

No nonsense pricing, drinks are stiff, hotdogs are amazing. It is easy to miss this bar on 7th if you're not looking for the door with stenciled lettering.

Ricardo Contreras

Awesome Detroit & Chicago Bar. Great Hot dogs made to order. They have a MAME Machine for all you gamers. Great Beers on tap.

Johny Mccahill

Neighborhood bar that keeps getting better.

Charles Charpentier

Carefully hidden Chicago/Detroit style cash only sports bar with beer and ballpark style hotdogs.

Brendan Brady

Ivy and Coney is a great bar. They have friendly prices and nice bartenders. They are always showing Michigan games when they are on which is sometimes very fun and other times is the least fun thing possible.

Lee Rodrigues

Great bar. Simple, cheap cash only hangout with no frills and no fuss.

David Kim

Visited DC a few weeks ago. Seems like a bar for regulars and small groups. Drinks are cheeeeap!!! But then again, I'm used to Manhattan ridiculousness. Definitely has a lot of personality in the decor.

Joseph Hoffman

Cash only, small bar. Staff was quiet and distant, but the relaxed atmosphere and great beer prices more than made up for it. They have an outside patio area as well.

Tsilavina Razafinirina

Small place, few people, the beer was nice.

Sasha Riser-Kositsky

Cash only run tucked away bar on the second floor in Shaw. Cheap beer. Laid back atmosphere.

Steven Jordan Tomaszewski

Best Chicago bar in town, dogs on fleek

Sridevi B

Hole in the wall kinda place which accepts cash only. Decent veggie chilli nachos and fries. The portions are a little smaller but whay can you expect for $5-6 these days. Good beer options to hang out and watch a game and enjoy a few hot dogs. Oh! Did I mention they have veggie dogs and veggie chilli?

Frank Ballmann

Great bar service and prices!

Michael Barboza

Great atmosphere! Delicious dogs. Chicago better than Detroit.

Alex Lima

$3.00 beer plus free peanuts. Don't go there, i want the whole place just for me.

Nicholas Roberts

Can't go wrong here, their dogs are authentic and great, and their beer selection covers the whole spectrum.

Bossi

With a slight nod to speakeasies, you'll probably walk right past it once or twice before figuring out where it is. Watch for the green door- when you spot the venue's name on the door you'll kick yourself for walking past it (well... or pedantically boast at how you got it on the first try). Good prices and OK enough food -- a local spot I can get a hot dog when so-craving (especially since DC-3 is so far away by Eastern Market).

Phil C

Fun place to hangout and grab a beer. Great place to catch a game and grab a beer.

Aviva Westheim

Divey place. Cash only though.

Lina Abisoghomyan

Awesome late night spot! Hip tiny hole in the wall bar, great for junk food cravings and cozy dates when a lot of other places are closed. Beware that they are cash only, but have an ATM right there.

tony knight

Honey Sriracha Cauliflower Sandwich goes well with Strohs and a shot.

Hjalte Paaske

Charlie Garner

Cheap food and drinks. Nice atmosphere

Billy Kangas

A home away from home from home

Reeves Hollar

Decent divey bar serving super tasty hot dogs.

Ronnie Morton

No frills Detroit/Chicago bar. Cash only. Great happy hour with $2 Strohs/ $5 Strohs and Bourbon. Only decent Chicago food in the city. Get a dipped Italian beef, Chicago style hot dog, or Italian sausage.

Yasir Khalid

It's a nice laid back dive bar that serves the best hot dog in the area

Lauren Crow

Dive bar that is a great find! Wish I had known of this place sooner in life. What a great deal for HH $4 - for Miller lite can and hot dog. Outside area was nice with the early fall weather.

Ryan Sanderson

We walked in at 1:30pm, the bar closes at 2pm. There are 5 or 6 guys upstairs, all obviously friends with the bar tender. We only want a couple drinks before turning in for the night. We get one each, and have it gone in a couple minutes. We try to order one more before leaving, we have cash and were going to leave the bartender a $20 tip. He told us no, said they were closing. It was 1:40. The sign said they closed at 2am, and WHILE he was refusing to serve us another drink WHILE they were still open, he was pouring a shot for one of his friends. I understand that we were the only two out of the total 8 people there that was not wearing a flannel shirt, but the last time I check my wallet full of cash was as good as anyone else's. I'm disappointed that the only place we went to for a late night drink was the only inhospitable place in what was an otherwise fairly welcoming city.

Tim Delong

Best place in the DMV to check out it you're a cubs fan. Old style!

Bishoy Gaid

Best dive bar in town with $3 drafts

Rol J

Solid bar with a nice rooftop and cheap Chicago style hot dogs.

Jonathan Lynch

Rajiv Shah

Joseph Santoro

Malort... you know what it is.

Klodian Haka

Nice bar for the area, themed for Midwest America, they nice beers. On the back there is outside sitting area. Food menu is ok. They don't accept credit cards only cash but they have ATM machine onsite.

Michael Watson

I really like the food but don't like cash only places.

E B

Mainly a Michigan (sports wise) bar. Cash only

Joe Patterson

Cash only dive bar (with an ATM inside). This is a good place to watch sports, hang out, and talk with big groups of friends in the back bar area. Their owners are from the midwest, so if you're looking for Stroh's, this is the place for you!

Ben G. Green

Good cheap beer. Hotdogs are a plus. Fries ok.

roy schaffer jr

This place is terrible I’m born and raised in Chicago and there food is horrible .. I’m currently sitting here at the bar now as I write this and the bartender is paying more attention to her cell phone then the customers.....

Andrew Doyle

Great hot dogs.

Dipika Mouli

After all these years, Ivy is still my favorite bar in DC because it feels like home. Cash only, don't show up unprepared.

Bill Niester

Watched a Michigan game here..very young crowd and very crowded but lots of tv's

David Hanor

Hole in the wall bar with a good vibe. Cash only.

Matt R

First of all, I grew up near Detroit so I was ready and willing to embrace this "Detroit and Chicago bar." But I was not impressed. The only "Detroit" aspects to it are a) they serve (mediocre) Coney dogs, b) they have a mural of Sparky Anderson on the wall, and c) it looks like a riot passed through the place not too long ago. I think they served two Michigan beers (both Bells) and the bartenders acted like they were really too important and busy to be serving you. They are very much more interested in being a Chicago bar, so I hope they enjoy serving their Chicago patrons. If you want a Michigan bar, go to Kangraoo Boxing Club on 11th.

Brittany Gerig Campbell

Come here if you are craving a taste of the Midwest. Bar celebrates Chicago & Detroit. They fly in the ingredients for the Chicago dog - this is the real deal. Bring cash and play some Mario Kart with friends in the back room.

Ben Jackson

Chicago meets Detroit in an awesome dive bar. Vernor's for sale.

Jay Gopal

cheap eats and drinks. Remember CASH ONLY! There is an ATM on site though.

Becky Watt

Great chicago dogs, cash only

Elizabeth Rapp

Love this place. Great hot dogs, cheap beer, friendly bartenders, great vibe.

John Coplen

The blonde d-bag bartender with a SUPER cooool Bad Saints hat was a pompous a-hole. Never came to the bar to greet us while too busy whispering and joking with his buddies. Then whined like a 8 year old when the 15 people that walked in with us got impatient, “I won’t serve you guys if you’re taking bad about me”. The bar was empty otherwise. Thought he was about to cry for real at one point. He was so offended we came from “Dacha”, even stating loudly. In our group was one of the co-owners of Dacha who recommend we go to Ivy and Coney. He was horrified by the guy. After telling us we had to leave, all 15 of us got up and the bouncer apologized saying, “ I don’t know what’s up with this guy (bartender), he does this all the time. I’m sorry.” Unless this bar fires d-bag Bad Saints bartender and gets a pretentious attitude adjustment I would avoid at all cost. 1 Star is not low enough. Worthless bar that won’t last in DC. A total fad.

Adam Carrico

Low-key vibe with very inexpensive beers, nice people, and amazing hot dogs. Great place to watch your Chicago/Detroit sports with fellow fans or just hang out in one of the few remaining neighborhood bars in DC.

Erin Ballentine

Great hot dogs. Great bar. Great space and great staff. I'll be back again soon!

Milos Mrdovic

Great vibe and beer!

Matt Ross

Perfect neighborhood bar. Authentic Chicago Dogs. Just the right size for a Monday night beer.

Janine Perry

One of the best spots in the city to chill out.

Jonathan Duffett

Reminded me of college! A little dirty and the food's mediocre, but it seems that's exactly what they going for. I'll definitely be back!

Ami Greener

Great little dive bar in Shaw. Love the Hanukkah pop up theme in December!

Matthew Jacobs

Food is good; staff is very friendly, and the atmosphere is nice now that there aren't peanut shells everywhere.

Patrick Revord

I feel like I'm back in Chicago! All of the classic drinks and dogs of the midwest. Lots of smoke, though.

Doug Brown K

New favorite #hitw spot

Kyle Hayes

Good

Ebony Bullock

Great food and drinks. Love the decor and vibe. The frachos are bomb
