A better dinner or atmosphere in Alexandria you will not find. The food is all so rich and flavorful but not over the top. George Washington’s Favorite is like a full size thanksgiving dinner and if you think you have the room, Martha’s Puff Pastry is a must as well.
Quaint dining experience in the early American period. Dressed in the early 19th century and serving period fare. We were also visited by a gentleman who shared some news of the"day" with a twinkle in his eye and a tongue in his cheek. We fully intend to return. The food was superb and the company delightful. Note: it is a bit expensive.
Wonderful history and location, though their menus could use an update.
I had the shrimp, served on a bed of shredded crab I think there was lobster mixed in with the crab also. It was delicious!
A wonderfully historic location. Service was sub par. The food was overpriced and I was served later than my table. Meh. Pass
Food was absolutely delicious, atmosphere was great and entertainment even better. Had the nicest, funniest gentleman from the 1700s come to our table to conversate and tell stories as well. He even came back a bit later and sang with the children.
Delicious food, good service, historical bldg. Bathroom downstairs, in need of a good update
This is unlike any other restaurant. It is our go to place to take out of towners. The food is great and the atmosphere can’t be beat. My husband loves the gentleman’s pie; I don’t have a go-to dish because it’s all great. It’s a mainstay of Old Town. Don’t miss it.
Amazing to hang out in a restaurant that served George Washington. Food was great. Service was very good. Table side entertainment.

I love going to Gadsby's for holiday meals. The food has been delicious.
Great Historical restaurant. Good comfort foods, huge portions, worth the cost.
Amazing place, the beef bordelaise was spectacular, highly recommend.
This was an unexpected fine. Great simple (colonial) food. Reasonable prices for the quality of food. Reservation suggested. We lucked out. Place was empty when we arrived and PACKED when we left. Amazing dessert. Save room for dessert
We went for dinner. Great atmosphere and the food was generally very good, though I suspected some items (e.g. the bread) were store bought. Service was very slow since there was only one server for the entire room and he had his hands full. Drink options were a little disappointing - only bottled beer and the "special" punch was an inauthentic rum w/ fruit juice.

All good... Sky
It was a very nice place to eat. The dinning room was inviting. The service was execlant my water glass was never empty. The food was good.
Historic and enjoyable. Food and services were good.
Love it and history is great. Nice prices.
This place has been great in the past, but my last visit was really disappointing. Our appetizers took 45 minutes to come out and they came out with our food. The wait staff ignored us most of the time. And they got people's drink orders wrong and had to be argued with about what was actually ordered and the difference between an ale and a stout.
Nice simple menu. Decor seems period-appropriate. George's watering hole!
Dine like George Washington!! Great atmosphere!! Great food!!
very nice decor and ambience. wonderful service. the food, however, was not as good as expected or as it was priced.
Excellent historic tavern in Old Town Alexandria, VA. Great ambiance and good old fashion food.
The hostess was very kind! This place has a fantastic historical atmosphere with real history behind it. Go for that experience. It cannot be replicated
Great atmosphere...wonderful food...attentive waitstaff. Will be back.
Excellent food and friendly service in a historic building. I wasn't prepared for a history lesson during our meal. That was a little too gimmicky but still very enjoyable overall.
Really enjoyable experience. We were able to walk in at opening time for dinner on Sunday. Both the adults and the children really enjoyed the food. We liked that the kids menus was more then just a cheese burger and chicken strips. We had a collection of 5 of their dishes and all were delicious. Fun atmosphere as well with the candles and decor. Thanks for a great evening.
Step back into time - savor a good meal.
Very cool historical restaurant and museum! The atmosphere is like you are back in colonial times. Tablewares were a nice addition to the ambiance. As for the food; the bread was soft and fresh, the peanut soup (soop) was delectable! Tasted like a more savory peanut butter, which was a nice surprise. The entire menu sounded delicious! Everything was very fresh and seemed to be made at the restaurant. The service was excellent. I would definitely come back for more. Highly recommend for anyone looking for good food and history!
Awesome food and a really cool old-timey-feeling atmosphere. The service could be better, though.
What an amazing dining experience!
Pleasantly surprised. This historic place is slightly off the beaten path in Old Town. Reasonable prices, especially for the neighborhood.
This is a very old place where President Washington ate at one point. It is an old world elegant place with tons of finished wood, wood floors, and fixtures that all make you feel like you have jumped back in time. The waiters and waitresses even dress in attire similar to what you find in President Washington's time period. The food was delicious. I had Washington's Favorite, which is duck, scalloped potatoes, and corn pudding. It was all delicious delivered very well and with an awesome atmosphere. I highly recommend visiting this place!
Such friendly staff. Prompt with fulfilling water for a hot summer day of being a tourist. Food was so delicious. Love the home/space and decor. Highly recommend coming here when visiting the area
If the experience of an old British-style appeals to you, this is a place you'll want to visit! The atmosphere is integral to the experience. Food was good but nothing to write home about (easy on the salt in the mash!). Prices are on the higher end, but portions were generous.
Thoroughly enjoyed the flavors brought in each dish at this historic restaurant. We shared the Martha's puff pastry just to get a sampling of the crab, ham, and salmon with a pretty solid relish for dipping. This dish is definitely meant for one person, but we expected we would fill up on the main course, which we did in fact do. I had the George Washington's favorite. I have not had much duck before, but this was a very tender flavorful dish. Unsure what exactly is in the sauce/seasoning, but it was carefully crafted, maybe had some jammy dark fruit taste. Each of the paired sides were solid and mostly new to me. Like the corn pudding and rhotekraut, which was definitely different in tasted to Sauerkraut. My partner had the pork chop, which was the most beef like tasting lamb chop I have had. I believe the brandied apple marinate darkened their color and brought out a more dark, savory bite to the chops. Service was quick, but not very involved. It is definitely pretty fun to eat at such an old and very historically important location while lit by mostly candlelight.
Great service plus beautiful place . The staff here is so nice and excellent side options. Great taste and mush potatoes is my favorite here.
Wonderful food. The portions are more than we could eat and the quality was better than expected. Flavorful, cooked correctly. Quite good. After a bad experience at a fine dining establishment in Alexandria, we were pleasantly surprised by the food and service. We were waited on by Gloria who was an absolute delight and represented the best in service. Whether a local or just a traveller, this restaurant warrants a visit. Do call ahead for reservations, it fills up quick.
Wonderful food with an excellent atmosphere. Our favorite colonial restaurant in the entire USA. Would highly recommend. Make sure to make a reservation far in advance if you are from out of town. Make sure to go in the evening especially when it is dark outside. Love the candles in the window.

Excellent lobster, crab and shrimp dish, children's Mac n cheese and pig in a blanket was a big hit! Steak and gentleman's pie we're both delicious as well. Service was perfect, enjoyed the experience tremendously!
Great place for a special occasion. Very cool history and delicious food.
Great food. Great service.
Great experience. Very period feel to it
Cute! Interesting location. The food was pretty good. The acoustics in the dining area were terrible!
Excellent food. Fun quaint atmosphere. Friendly staff. All around excellent experience!
Wonderfully historic establishment from soup to nuts, with a witty colonial gentleman circulating about the tables as you eat and engaging you in some colonial banter. Amazing drinks (the best Argentianian malbec I have ever had was on their menu), and truly delicious, savory food.
Maybe we hit the jackpot. The staff, the two times I have been here, was great, provided an entertaining historical context and the food and drink was fun and tasty. Thanks!
Delicious food and great atmosphere!
This is a quaint Colonial dining experience with very different brunch offerings. I highly recommend the Mimosa and Bloody Mary on a Sunday morning
Great food and service in a historic setting.
Such friendly staff. Prompt with fulfilling water for a hot summer day of being a tourist. Food was so delicious. Love the home/space and decor. Highly recommend coming here when visiting the area

Great staff and.food, nice ambiance
Great experience. Our server was amazeballz and the food was spot on. Will ded return
Wonderful food, service and atmosphere. Waiters were dressed in period costume in this historic building where George. Washington and his buddies ate and hung out. Fun experience!
I love going there. The place and service, plus the food is so worthwhile.
As too me this place is underrated! Great spot for brunch or dinner, with fast service and excellent atmosphere
I go there to practice an English country dance class. But I came here for the museum when I was on a business trip to DC area. It is a historical place where President George Washington visited. Thus the building is very old but I like it’s authenticity of the building. It has a small gift shop where the staff is very knowledgeable n sweet. If u like history, this is a must place to visit.
For lunch... Jeanie was our waitress. Everything was perfect. Service, food and atmosphere. Wife had burger and I had the roast beef with french onion dip and horseradish sauce. Try a cup of the peanut soup.
Great ambiance!
Great food and good service. Wonderful history! To think that some of our Forefathers frequented the same establishment is fascinating. Food was delicious and plenty of it! Nice variety of local craft beers and other cool drinks for a hot day of site seeing. Walk around the place and take it all in.
Excellent atmosphere. Excellent service. Excellent food! When in Alexandria, VA go there!
One of the most historic places in all of the DMV, with good food too!
Amazing historic tavern serving decent food right in Old Town Alexandria- If you’re a history buff, it’s the building that really makes this place special.
Amazing history, traditional early american food, and a lovely staff. It's cool to dine where George Washington dined. The menu offers a few traditional dishes that I have not seen anywhere else. All cooked to perfection and delivered by waitresses in period dress. It's an eighteenth century treat that you will never forget. Reservations recommended.

Love the history, and food is very good
If you want to travel back in time, have delicious food accompanied by great service, then come.
Great atmosphere and lots of history
AMAZING!!! Such a charming piece of history. As we walked through the door we stepped back in time 200 years. The food and serve was perfect. The "tavern keeper" was the highlight of the evening.
Excellent service and ambience. We shared the chicken pot pie, which tasted excellent and was at standard tourist pricing.
The story called American revolutionary tavern is the epitome of Old Town's charm.
Great place for a Historic lunch.
The historical significance of this building gives it 4 stars by itself. The food is good and the staff is friendly.
Great food, historically themed, a must enjoy restaurant when visiting D,C,
Take a step back in time and have a candle lit dinner back in 1785. Elegant arrangements provide the atmosphere of an 18th century tavern where you just might run into Thomas Jefferson or George Washington.
Quiet, cozy. Food was ok, not great. Really enjoyed it.
Beatiful decor, great portions, attentive but not overly bearing staff. Food was excellently prepared and the atmosphere sets it all off 5/5!
Very friendly and attentive service. Everyone in our party enjoyed their meal (tenderloin, pork chops, duck, gentleman's pie, etc.). It was a dark candlelit scene that really relayed an ambiance of a dining experience in the founding days. #travelformortals
Gadsby's Tavern is close to the Water falls in Alexandria. Their decorations takes you back to 40 to 50 years back. They serve extremely delicious food. I highly recommend at for tourists and family outings
I thought that the prices were very reasonable and the food was absolutely delicious. They also have some excellent beers from local breweries. Service was impeccable. An excellent alternative to the usual bland-fooded chains. The location is also very good as it is very close to all the shops, and there's a parking garage very close that is only 5$ all days on Saturdays.
We were just here and Aleksandar was our waiter. Give that man a raise, he’s a gem! Thank you and good luck with your PhD!
Enjoyed the experience more than the food, but it was a good visit.
Nice history. Food was good.
Best lamb chops ever. Super fun wait staff.
Great food!
Excellent
Great service with a historic vibe.
Excellent of food and service.
Service and food was amazing and delicious!
Great Food, Great Service
If you want delicious food and drink with some colonial charm this is the place! I had the lemon chicken with rice. The food was excellent with the right amount of spice. The servers and staff are in period costume. The height of the meal - a toast by one of the colony's great unknown orators, Master Hall, a gentleman farmer who surprised and engaged us all with his wit, humor and charm. Cheers to you, sir! I dont know when I'll be in the area again, but very much look forward to my next visit to Gadsby's!
Very interesting locale. Good food and ambiance.
We went for New Year's Eve and had a lovely time....there were 8 in our party. Our server was Gloria and she was delightful! Food was VERY good, and was a set menu. This is the 2nd year we chose Gadsby's Tavern.
Prime rib and banana bread pudding ... excellent. Try the house cider rum.
So fun and great food. A very historic area to just walk around in after enjoying some delicious food.
Great atmosphere and pretty good.
This was the coolest place we went to in Alexandria. The history alone makes this place a worthwhile visit. We received excellent service. The wait staff was very social and prompt. The drinks were great. Try Washingtons brew! And the food was simply delectable. Time period accurate, we loved this place!
Fabulous food, wonderful entertainment. This will be a regular stop when we come to Alexandria.
Food was ok, but not great. Prime rib and chicken fontina were both overcooked. Our waitress brought out the wrong drinks, never refilled a single drink, and lost her pad with our dessert orders. Also, the table was sticky. Love the history, but this wasn't worth it.
it's way too expensive, the service is atrocious, and the food would barely be passable for $30 a plate - much less the $90+ they charge you after gratuity
Enjoyed a wonderful evening celebrating anniversary in a lovely place, lively atmosphere, and characters from the past.
The food and the service was excellent
Would be five stars if they had entrees that stood up with the standards of the Smithfield Ham Biscuits. Brie app was awesome too. Loved the Rainwater Madeira Apertif.
Over 200 years of serving the same food make this restaurant a great place to relax after a long day in or around Alexandria Virginia. Reservations are highly recommended as dinner service is very popular.
Had a wonderful dinner here during Memorial Day weekend. Very delicious entrees, courteous staff, and reasonable prices. Had the Baked Brie en Croute (tasty but could be a bit bigger of a serving), the spinach salad with truffle oil, and the peanut soup (silky and just enough peanut flavor) as starters. The Beef Bordelaise was juicy and perfectly cooked, and the Lemon Chicken Risotto was extremely juicy and delicious as well. This place may haven't changed much in years, but they deliver excellent food and a great experience every time. Would definitely return again.
This dining experience was absolute brilliance.
Everything sounded amazing, but was executed poorly. All our food was bland and waaaaay overcooked
A must go. Good service and food.
What a great opportunity to taste traditional American food in a wonderful original setting. Great food and great service! Good cost-benefit too.
The food was amazing!!!! The waitress was friendly, but slow. The dining room they kept cramming people in was so hot! There was no cross breeze. People of all ages were uncomfortable with the heat. I actually had to walk outside. I felt like I was going to faint at the end of my meal. There was a good 7-12 degree difference between the dining room we were in and the other room. I will go again, but only in the winter time.
Delicious and lots of fun. Old-timey feel and real history. Get the French onion soup. Expensive.
Great historical tavern visited by George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Marquis de Lafayette, et al. Very well preserved and very reasonable entrance fee, only $5 on the day we visited. Well worth the time.
My party and I took a trip out to Alexandria from our visit to D.C. and thought this would be a great place to eat given the historical significance. I was quite pleased with the old school ambiance, down to our waitresses' garb. The prices were reasonable and the food was fantastic. This is the first, and up until now, only, time I have ever taken a picture of my meal. A great experience.
Enjoyed the history (George Washington ate here), good food but small crowded dining room.
Great atmosphere.
Great food, great service, great entertainment by the historical reenactors.
Great food, Great service and amazing atmosphere
1785 tavern where George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and other historic figures ate and held meetings. Great atmosphere food and apple cobbler
Walking into Gadsby's is like stepping back in time. From the decor to the uniforms of the staff you could think the large entry door also served as a portal to the early 1800's. Walked in at slightly past 2pm on a Sunday afternoon and the two dining rooms were both full, which likely led to slower than optimal service. The entree though, when it arrived, tasted great. The meat in my prime roast beef & brie sandwich almost melted in my mouth and I couldn't get enough of the horseradish sauce. The banana pudding was very good, and large enough for two, but the bananas had this strange consistency, as if biting into yuca. My drink, hot chocolate with rum and whipped cream, was perfect for a cold winter day. Bonus points for not packing the tables too close to each other, a rare find these days.
Really fun experience. Its like a time machine back to the time of George Washington. The food is surprisingly good and very reasonably priced. They had a very entertaining actor in period garb who stopped by the tables and had a bit of fun with guests. Will be coming back whenever we have visitors to show them some history in action.
Great drinks. Did not have food but loved the decor and the dress of the wait staff. Super traditional and hard working, well trained. Highly recommend.
Waited over 30mins and nobody came to take our order. When we complained they stated that they understood and comped our drinks (which is great) but they snickered as we left. Usually have a good experience here but will not be returning.
Really unique place in the heart of Alexandria. I tried their Filet Mignon and it was amazing. I would definitely recommend giving this place a visit! Best to make reservations on the weekends
Great service, fantastic food, and great atmosphere.
Ambiance - very nice. Food - good. No handicap bathroom.
This was by far the best meal we had during our stay in Alexandria. The food was wonderful and full if flavor. The portion sizes were quite generous and more than any of the 3 of us could finish entirely. The service was prompt and quite delightful in their period inspired attire. Overall great place for dinner!
Great food and atmosphere. Historical place that delivers on the historical promise. I had Dinner with George!
This little restaurant/tavern gives a small peek into the past. Hostess and servers were all in period dress as were the table settings. Though the plates were 'faux' pewter [smile] - The price for the portion are great! - Adjacent to the tavern is a small museum where there are other artifacts to investigate.
Colonial vibe on the inside of the restaurant. The food portions were quite large, and the burger was very good. Eli was a very good waiter, and had a ton of personality. Overall good experience and would come back.
Outstanding service and food was just as outstanding. Had the French onion soup and the Filet mignon!!! Would definitely be going back!!
Gasbys is amazing....Kim did a wonderful job organizing the female stranger event with Port City... the food was wonderful and the beer expertly matched....great job by everyone!!! Thanks!!!!
Very nice, n good.
Quaint with excellent service
The food was good. The atmosphere and service were great. Loved the actor in 1800s period clothes, who made jokes and played music for each table.
Good place to hold a special occasion dinner, such as a wedding anniversary.
Lots of history, neat atmosphere, good food.
Fabulous prime rib (the end piece I requested was perfect) with a perfect accompaniment of vegetables served in an iconic atmosphere.
What a great experience
Food was great, and very period correct decor and clothing.
Waited over 30mins and nobody came to take our order. When we complained they stated that they understood and comped our drinks (which is great) but they snickered as we left. Usually have a good experience here but will not be returning.
Most excellent place to dine, the history and entertainment is a one of a kind experience!
Delightful and steeped in colonial history
Great history, feel and decor for any event!
Really unique place in the heart of Alexandria. I tried their Filet Mignon and it was amazing. I would definitely recommend giving this place a visit! Best to make reservations on the weekends
Really authentic. Colonial style decor a d food as well as server uniforms. Great staff and great food!
Love the colonial people.
Great original delicious and Paul Washington I mean George
Prime rib sandwich was perfect for lunch. Love he history.
Delicious comfort food! The fried itself are amazing! Cozy, little restaurant with some pretty cool history. Definitely a place to check out when visiting Old Towne Virginia.
Delicious prime rib. Full of authentic period items down to the pewter charger plates. A must-see for any history buffs as well as those on a date night.
Fun place to eat! I go more for the experience than the food, but the food isn't bad either!
Good
I think it has gone down but still a good experience.
Great Piece Of History
Wonderful! must visit when in the area.
Prime rib was cooked to a perfect medium. Period entertainment was amusing and the service was friendly and timely.
This is a must stop place when visiting DC. Not only is it historic, the food is fantastic!
So freaking great. Can't wait to go back
Super experience. A little taste of 18th century with excellent food and a special character chatting us up and playing his period guitar at our table.
Charming!
Sadly we did not get to go to the museum itself but got to eat at the tavern. It had a really good atmosphere and we loved the ambiance of the place. My husband and I went here for his birthday and honestly quite disappointed. The waitress was really lovely though but the food was just mediocre. I got the the fried oyster sandwich as recommended but I didn't really particularly enjoyed it, the citrus cocktail and the lemon wedge is the only thing that gave it a taste. My husband got the prime roast beef and brie dipping sauce, which he also did not enjoy, I've tried Brie before and loved it but this one was just off putting. The coleslaw though was good, I quite like it. We informed the waitress that it was my husband's birthday and she was kind enough to give us a free dessert with a candle. My husband chose a creme brûlée and I got a strawberry rhubarb pie. I'm just sad it did not live up to our expectation, maybe colonial food isn't just for us.
Great food and drinks. Bit quashed in as we were near the fireplace. Little bit pricey on some meals
A great historical place to find a good bite to eat. Not too expensive.
Wonderful meal, great history
