REVIEWS OF Bistro 27 IN Virginia

We stumbled upon this gem when we were traveling between Virginia and North Carolina. They had two large events going on, but it never once affected our service, which was impeccable. The food was well presented, delicious, and a very reasonable price for what you got. I would go back every time I am in Richmond!

Andrea Brewer

Great brunch! The staff is excellent and the food was top notch. Great variety to choose from and everyone loved their meal. The large windows provide tons of natural lighting. Great lamb, herb stuffed chicken, salmon and waffles! Will definitely be back!

Irene Burlock

Lovely menu, fine service.

Good service. Basic good food. They are nice and refund your parking if you park behind the restaurant.

Went here for a birthday dinner - food was very good. I'd likely not order the Salmon again, but the Scallops were awesome and the beer was pretty good (even though the waitress charged me the wrong amount for the Brooklyn Lager). Highly recommend

Dinner was great, service was too! Had the sea bass and crab my wife had lamb osso buco both were delicious.

Kristen K

Blandest food I've ever had out. Nothing was seasoned. My fish had a funky aftertaste never had crab topping topping not taste like crab. Service was ok.

stephen burns

Brunch was very expensive but felt very cheap. The restaurant has good lighting, with large natural windows, and the food was ok overall, but the value was pretty low. I went to a bunch which consisted of an appetizer table, which felt like everything was bought prepackaged (mini muffins, basic salad, cheese cubes, stale crescents) a choice of a main course, and a small dessert. The desserts were ok. The main course was ok. Drinks were extra. Overall, I was not impressed

All of the food was top dollar and completely worth your time and money. Excellent plates of duck and rainbow trout. Also try the artichoke and prosciutto appetizer. The owner is very approachable and an all around awesome guy. Give it a go.

Kevin Zielenski

Exceptionally friendly and attentive service. The food at our Sunday Brunch was delicious, in particular, the croissants and Crabmeat Eggs Benedict.

Ivonne Chevere

Excellent service, food extraordinary and owner Me Wright makes us feel incredible. Best place in downtown Richmond.

Crab soup was thick, barely warm and missing the crab. Had cream brulee for dessert, instead of topping with sugar it was topped with SALT!! Didn't they miss the hard crust it was supposed to make? The next one came out and the sugar was burnt and tasted like it, after I returned that one the waitress said she would take the dessert off our bill...were they really going to charge me after I have a pile of salt in my mouth? Couldn't get rid of the taste of salt all night. Management needs to taste their food and review their chef's.

Kipp burgoyne

Fine food, attentive service in heart of the Art District.

Wonderful dinner!

My oyster chowder was watery and didn't have a single oyster in it. Pretty sure my lamb and wife's chicken were microwaved. My potatoes were grey and flavorless. My brother got sea bass. Only took a couple bites. Said that he didn't think it was actually sea bass. Drinks took a very long time.

We've been to 27 Bistro a few times before. Every single time William made our experience personable, fun and full of positive vibes. Great food, excellent service, nice ambiance, good price! William is a great host and we'll definitely be back!

This is my favorite restaurant in RVA. The food is always supreme and we love the owner! He is very personable and friendly. We eat here once a year after our Alma mater's homecoming. We are never rushed, the menu includes a great selection, we had fish stuffed with crabmeat and scallops/shrimp, the potatoes were fabulous. Everything was fabulous, no complaints at all. Can't wait to go in 2018.

Clark Gaylord

Excellent, inspired dishes. French influence, but very interesting with Brazilian flair. The salmon with figs was one of the best I've ever had. Great idea with perfect execution. You can drop a few bucks at this place, but you will not be disappointed.

William Wright

Beautiful downtown restaurant. Food delicious and server very friendly. Nearby hotel sent me. I am glad they did. Will return.

I'll start by saying, yes it was Mother's Day and it was the same weekend as lots of graduations, but I have never been so disappointed by a restaurant on Open Table before. My family was in Richmond for a family wedding, and upon doing research, discovered that Bistro 27 is considered one of the best places to do Mother's Day brunch. My grandmother had just recently passed, so we wanted to make it an extra special experience. The Menu looked amazing, reviews were good, so I booked it. My family wanted to arrive early, but because of parking we walked in right at our reservation time of 1:30pm and immediately was told that no, our reservation was at 1:45pm and we would have to wait. I showed the hostess the time booked on the app and she sort of gave an attitude and said we would have to wait. She and the other male host were probably two of the rudest people I've ever dealt with in "customer service". But we walked over to the bar to get out of the way and after a few minutes standing there, the bartender asked if we wanted anything to drink. We ordered two Diet Cokes. The bartender went to the kitchen and didn't come back for over 10 minutes. Maybe their drink machine is in the back? Nope, comes back, walks around some... finally makes our drinks 15 minutes later. My infant nephew, who is 10 months old, was with us, but I counted him in the reservation. When being seated, I asked for a high chair and the male host said they were all being used. My sister went to the restroom during our meal and discovered one being unused in the back, but at that point, we didn't want to make a fuss. Our waitress greeted us and took our orders, she seemed nice - we then walked over to the table with appetizers/ salmon, shrimp, biscuits, cheese and fruit - all of which were really good, but there was barely anything left at 1:30pm. I didn't see them replenish it while we were there. Our waitress basically disappeared. Our main dishes didn't take long, and were yummy, but were brought by another waitress who seemed totally overwhelmed. At one point the first waitress, Natalie I believe, walked out like she was cleaning a table. My dad politely called her name, to ask a question, she ignored him and walked back to the kitchen. Never acknowledged us again. After finishing our meals and sitting there for quite some time, I flagged down the overwhelmed second waitress (who was extremely sweet) and asked for our dessert and the check. Again, all the food was good, but was disappointed to find that they charged $19.25 for my 10 month old nephew who ate nothing but fruit and crackers. Also upon getting our dessert, I noticed that a table of three adults sitting next to us, who had been seated before us, hadn't even received their meals. They had been waiting for over an hour. I just would NOT recommend going here, especially for a special occasion. I was very disappointed.

Come for the food & drinks, stay for William. My wife and I had a wonderful meal here and were lucky enough to sit and chat with the owner, William, for a majority of the night. Great evening all around. Thanks again!

Barbara Daly

We hosted the rehearsal dinner for my son and daughter in law's wedding at Bistro 27 two weeks ago. it was a wonderful experience from start to finish. William made the entire process so seamless and enjoyable!! The food was wonderful and the service was outstanding. The icing on the cake was that William kept the restaurant open after the dinner was over for our out of town guests to join us for a cash bar and complimentary appetizers. It was so nice and convenient to stay at the restaurant and enjoy the company of our friends who were not invited to the rehearsal dinner! Everyone had a great time and told us how good the food and service was. Overall, a fantastic evening. I am so very happy we chose Bistro 27!!!

We've chosen bistro 27 for our rehearsal dinner. William was fantastic, answering all our questions and letting us sample a menu for our dinner. The restaurant is beautiful, while still being cozy. Nice view of a nice part of broad Street. The food was delicious, the 27 salad was excellent. Overall we had a wonderful time and would absolutely recommend it to a friend.

Great brunch. Good service and reasonable prices. The manager really seems to care and made his rounds to every table. Our waiter was really friendly. Very nice atmosphere as well.

When my spouse and I went there was no one there. We went for dinner. The drinks were good and the waiter was nice. He got to talking after awhile and I appreciated that. The food was great. The lamb was too die for. I prefer a lot of sauce and seasonings on my meat but it was great. The atmosphere was nice. The waiter even turned down the lights for us. The only reason I give this 4 stars is because parking is an absolute nightmare and I have road rage like you won't believe lol. I recommend this place 100%. I should mention that we are an interracial couple (WM BW). I look for that when I search a place. They are very friendly.

We had dinner on a Friday night at about 7:30pm and the restaraunt was completely empty except for one other couple. We were seated promptly and our drinks came quickly. No problems up to that point, the server was friendly and obviously attentive. My tea tasted like it had soap in it so I had to ask for more water. When we went to order we were told that both of our choices we not available, the seafood pasta because they were out of pasta? (What?!?!) and the lamb because they didn't have lamb. So we we're forced to order something else. When the order came, mine was not at all what was described on the menu. Polenta instead of risotto and a couple of asparagus instead of winter vegetables. The server apologized and asked if I wanted to send it back for the mixed vegetables. I declined and decided to just eat it. We were extremely disappointed especially since the plates were almost $30 each. Terrible experience and won't ever eat there again.

This is not the same Bistro 27 as it's new ownership and outdated

Was there for thanksgiving and had a great experience food and service was great good job John and William

Lea Hyman

We went here for brunch on a Sunday. The food was great! The biscuits and croissants were freshly baked and tasted out of this world. William, the owner, came to our table and made sure we were happy with everything. We will definitely be coming back the next time we are in Richmond.

I ate at Bistro 27 in early June 2016. My daughter gave us a groupon worth 15 dollars. The following is my review: First the good. We ate early so no problems getting a seat . The server was very friendly and got us our menus and made suggestions in a very nice way. We decided to get the lamb and the ravioli. Both entrees were very well done and the flavor was very nice. My wife really enjoyed her lamb. Entree's were $20 and up. We didn't order wine, so can't comment on their wine selection or pricing. Now, the not so good. Although it's not apparent on the groupon website, the restaurant charges a surcharge for coupons. In our case, this meant that the surcharge equaled the coupon value. I feel that's deceptive, and essentially a bait and switch scheme. Perhaps they're not really looking for the groupon crowd anyway. There were only minor issues with a meal itself, mainly the bread was cold and the plate my ravioli was served on was cold which meant my food got cold fairly quickly. If I paid premium prices for entree's on a regular basis, I might have said something, but I just let it go. So despite the groupon disappointment, the food was nice and we enjoyed ourselves. This really isn't a type of restaurant I frequent, so perhaps some of the finer points escape me. If this is in someone's price range, I think they stand a good chance of getting a good meal.

Well I have never ate here, but I have over 7 years of restaurant experience and I called to ask about a bartending or job position. This is how the conversation went.. the rude man “Bistro 27” Me “Hello how you doing, I was just calling to see if you all were hiring servers or bartenders” Man “No” me “okay thank you” Man “hangs up”. So I’m like wow that was rude, so I call back asking to speak with a manager and he says “what do you need ma’am” I said well I just wanted to say whomever I’m speaking with doesn’t sound very welcoming.. He says “ok” and hangs up. The fact that I got such nasty attitude before even coming in to try the food rubs me the wrong way and I won’t be going there to eat.

Decided to spend Thanksgiving dining out with my son. Ordered the Thanksgiving plate. Had water to Drink, no alcohol. Dinner included a buffet of salad, cheese, etc. Food tasted very good, but portions were ridiculously small. Also had to deal with street people begging for money every time we walked past the front door. The highlight of the evening was a vagrant inside the restaurant sitting down at my table asking me what I thought of president Trump! Then to add insult to injury, was presented with a bill of $110.00! Will not return, and woul advise you to stay away.

Caroline Jeffries

Had a great interaction with the people at this place! The food was amazing and the one guy who greeted us at the door made us some fantastic drinks. Wish we lived closer, would definately be a regulars if we did but aleast we now know where to eat when we come back.

Simply elegant Italian-American restaurant with a relaxed & quiet aura. My wife & I ordered Escargots (appetizer), Tomato Basil (soup of the day), Duck Breast with orange garlisque, polenta & vegetables and Lamb Osso (five-hour braised shank) with polenta & vegetables (entrèes). Our waitress went out her way to give my wife a non-alcoholic cocktail as I drank Brooklyn Lager; which was a nice compliment. We enjoyed our evening listening to light music in a lightly dimmed and quiet environment within the restaurant. One thing that stood out to me was their kitchen/grill by the bar area where you can view the chef cooking. Lastly, the pricing I placed as moderate; due to my experience eating at Italian-American specialty restaurants and the common price range for dishes. For the price, it's worth it--in my opinion.

my favorite restaurant in richmond so far. food never disappoints, love the menu, great service. feel the price is very reasonable considering the quality of the food & service. if you're a foodie, this is the place to go!

The food is not fresh and it's bot cooked all the way. We weren't satisfied with the food and we barely ate it so the manager waivied the bill. They need a lot of work to improve their food.

David Silversmith

Great location, plain ole mediocre food, completely overpriced... nothing special here unfortunately sound you want over priced mediocre food this is your spot, otherwise pass on this place until they get their act together.

Jean Paul Pantaleon

I didn't realize the owner could leave a review on his own restaurant.

We had our son's rehearsal dinner at Bistro 27, all the staff were gracious, and very accommodating. The food was delicious and plentiful. We are so very thankful for how smoothly everything went. .

Matthew Coons

Wonderful experience. Wife and I had fun chatting with the owner, whom kept refilling our wine glasses.

MIssbeautilover

My boyfriend and I went there for lunch today and I would like to say, the place is highly overrated. The food there was okay, not commendable though. I had quiche and I am vegetarian so there were not many options there for vegetarians. My boyfriend ate the salmon piccata and he didn't feel good after eating it. He said that it was pretty bland and that he could've cooked it himself. Although, I would like to say that the service and the view are awesome. I would recommend to try, but overall we did not enjoy our meals as much as we expected we would.

I've been to Bistro 27 numerous times since they opened and I've had an excellent meal each and every time. In addition to the amazing cuisine, the restaurant is beautiful and clean and the service is always excellent. It's definitely always on our short list when we want to go out for a nice dinner in Richmond.

Great food and wonderful staff. They did a great job even though they were super busy. Impressive food and service!

Alex Minnerly

Don't let the white tablecloths and well dressed staff make you this this place is unapproachable. Nice people and top notch food. Noise level is very low so conversation is easy. Sit at the bar and watch the kitchen put it all together. I had the Scallops and they were excellent. Served with some perfectly grilled vegetables. My wife was looking for something lighter and chose the grilled Pear salad. Loved it. Nice people, great food and not just for special occasions. You'll be glad you went.

This bistro was surprisingly good. Located just across W Broad St from the superb Max's on Broad, Bistro 27 is easily found. The staff is attentive and very friendly. Staff is very well trained and can be consulted for well considered recommendations. Portion size is more European (smaller) than is normal in Richmond, but is not "too small". Price and value received seem to be aligned. I noticed that they fly both the US flag and the EU flag at their entrance--and I noticed that the flags are in the wrong order (the US flag is always to its own right) and the EU flag is larger than the US flag. This may not matter to most, but I have to admit that it detracted a bit from my dining experience.

Karen Gutcher

My family surprised me with a birthday party at Bistro 21. Manager/Owner, William White, did an amazing job with every detail—from food and flowers to microphones and photo booth. Who knew that this little gem of a dinner location was also a perfect place for receptions of all kinds! Thank you to Mr. White and his staff! As a bonus, left over food was taken to a homeless shelter!

We walked into this restaurant after just eating at Comfort and wanted some drinks. The bartender/owner was one of the most personable people I have met in a dining establishment. He talked with us for nearly two hours. We were so impressed by the level of customer service that we returned the following week for dinner. Before we even entered the door he recognized us walking up the side wall and immediately greeted us. The food was delicious and reasonably priced for restaurants in that area. Having walked by for years I wished we had gone in sooner.

There is nothing I like in this restaurant. The owner is so rude and nasty. We had dinner for 12 people. The food was not enough for one person. She promised to give us Kibab. Then she changed her mind. She lied and said we did not offer you Kibab. We had to pay for 12 people but 6 of us were eating. If there zero rating then I will select that.

Jim McCullen

My wife and I had dinner at Bistro 27 last night before seeing a play at the November theater. The restaurant was filled to capacity at 6pm with theater guests and others. Our waiter was fantastic, even with the rush of people he made sure we were attended to throughout the evening. The food was great, I had the Flounder Almondine and my wife had the Rockfish special. Finished the evening off with Berries in Dark Chocolate. This was a special night out for the two of us and Bistro 27 provided the experience we were hoping for.

brieanna Dolby

I had a great time and I had a great dinner and had Tom as my server and the owner was so nice to us and the family.

Christina Andrade

Good points: atmosphere, water glass never empty Bad points: service, knowledge of menu, overpriced for quality The food was sub-par. To their defense, the menu was "new" so when the chef failed to include the grilled chicken in my gnocchi, I didn't fuss too much - just traded it in for a salad. When I pointed out that I was supposed to have chicken, the server (in a condescending tone) disagreed and double checked the menu. After a trip to the hostess stand, then to the kitchen, then to the manager and back, she offered to add chicken, but the gnocchi was unbearable in taste and texture. Undercooked, gooey dumplings drowned in bland pesto sauce; I couldn't pretend to like it. My husband got a hamburger and "potato fingerlings" (fries), about which he had no complaints, but really how could you screw up a burger? Would not come back, the server was very snobby and kept going out of her way to rearrange my fork and knife; it was incredibly awkward.

I ended up going to this restaurant because I had a gift certificate worth $25. The evening turned out to be a disaster. First the waiter was new and told us outright that that they did not have any vegetarian dishes other than the salad. When we asked him to check with the cook, he comes back saying that the cook has offered to make us vegetarian pasta with vegetables and marinara sauce. Then I overheard the waitress at the next table saying that they have the tomato basil soup. When, asked, the waiter, apologizes for not knowing that in the beginning and brings me the soup. Whatever vegetarian food we got was not that great. If not for that gift certificate, we would have walked out of the restaurant way earlier.

Awesome jewel in the heart of Richmond. A must visit. I had the braised lamb, with a Legends Brown Ale. Best dinner in a very long time. Service was superb. The chef Matt knows his craft, and it shows. Owner William Wright sat down with us casually, and made us feel very happy to be there. A must visit. Can't wait to do it again.

We just visited to celebrate our 1 year wedding anniversary and were delighted by our experience. A year ago, we had our rehearsal dinner at Bistro27, which was exceptional in its own right, so we wanted to go back to celebrate. Upon entering, we were immediately recognized by William who warmly introduced us to our waiter for the evening. We were treated to wonderful drinks, service, and food throughout the evening. Our server, John, was excellent and checked in on us throughout our meal without intruding on our conversation. First, I had an incredible peach salad followed by the Crispy Duck Breast— I was floored by how delicious it all turned out. It was paired with perfectly seasoned brocollini and mashed potatoes. Exquisite. My wife ordered the lamb dish and thoroughly enjoyed it as well. After our main course, we had to order the cheesecake because we remembered it fondly from our tastings and rehearsal dinner. We were not disappointed, as the cheesecake disappeared seconds after arriving on our table. We lovenBistro27 and are excited to come back for more wonderful dinners and brunches throughout the year!

We were here on a office holiday lunch, such a cozy and classic dine in restaurant. Ordered seared salmon, its cooked to perfection. But portions are too small. Chicken roast tasted good as well. Wonderful deserts, especially tiramisu and chocolate torte were so yummy.

Over the years I've eaten at some of America's best Restaurants, including many owned by chefs on Bravo's Top Chef. Bistro 27 can go toe-to-toe with any of these restaurants. I've been to Bistro 27 about five times now, and each meal is better than the last. This elegant-casual bistro is undoubtedly some of the best food Richmond has to offer. The staff is well-educated and knowledgeable about the food and drinks. The portions are phenomenal for the price and quality. Among my favorites are the Scallop Appetizer and Calamari Appetizer. Without question, though, the Ribeye with Truffle Butter is a home-run. The earthy truffles, rich butter, and charred ribeye make for the perfect steak.

Tonya Ashman

We went to Bistro 27 last night and had one of the best meals we've ever had in Richmond. The overall experience was very good. We started with the mussels, and they were so good I could have made a meal off of just that. I'm glad we went on to entrees, though. I had the lamb osso bucco and my husband had the crispy duck. Both absolutely amazing. Our service was also incredible. Both the manager and our server checked on us just enough times, watching our beverage levels to make sure we were topped off but their brief check ins did not interrupt our date at all. On a side note, we arrived just in time to see a couple with two enormous, beautiful grey dogs show up at the door for treats. The dogs were obviously very used to this stop off, as they waited expectantly (but well-mannered) at the door for the manager to present their goodies. I highly recommend requesting a window seat up front.

Alex Caulder

Lacks good wait staff. However food is good.

Tom Bishop

The review varies on the meal you're having. If dinner is what you seek then look no further. Fantastic food! Dinner = 4 stars. If lunch is your thing then keep looking. Their lunch menu is over priced for what you get. Example - I ordered their new Tarragon Chicken Sandwich. For $10 I got a couple of the smallest pieces of chicken you've ever seen. There wasn't even enough to cover the kaiser roll on which it was served - plenty of lettuce though. To top it off the chicken was over cooked. They should have called it a blackened tarragon chicken sandwich because that's what it was - but not blackened in a good way. Lunch = 2 stars.

I really love this place, it is expensive, so we always go during restaurant week! Everything I have every tried has been absolutely amazing. The pasta and raviolis are particularly note-worthy. I love to get there early and have a martini before sitting down for dinner. Great atmosphere as well, it makes for a the perfect date night.

Wife and I were looking for dinner downtown before an event. After walking by several spots that didn't "grab" us, we happened upon Bistro 27 and so glad we did. Simply put, I think this is the best meal I have had during a year in Richmond. Food was delicious, service was "above and beyond". Will definitely go back, hopefully often. William and his team were great hosts !
