REVIEWS OF The Great Northern IN Vermont

Damon Brink

First time. Was waiting on something else just wanted a cup of coffee and a spot to chill. Tried here, they were welcoming, genuine and served me my cup of coffee with water and a refill. I'm not sure they're really set up for a coffee shop type thing but that didn't matter to those running the floor, very refreshing and I'll be back to order more and see what this place is about. Give it a try if you haven't... Not sure about food, but I bet it's good!

B Gilbert

Sunday brunch, no wait. Covered patio. Curried smoked pork hash was excellent. Fresh pickled veggie side. Surrounded by breweries, pizza and other restaurants.

Carter Giles

My wife and I were passing through town and picked The Great Northern based on google reviews. We stopped in for a late lunch at ~ 3:00 PM. They were serving their menu b/w lunch and dinner. We were disappointed with the quality and price. I ordered the chicken sandwich. The bottom of the bun was soaked in the runny sandwich sauce and was pretty much goo. My sandwich was luck warm at best. My wife had the hamburger which was not much larger than a slider but carried the price of a full sized burger. The decor was very modern and it looked like a fun place to hang out. We wondered if we had stopped during the "normal" dinning times if our experience would have been better.

Cole Phelps

Great staff, great service all round! Drink selection was great, food was really good save the burger. It was prepared well, it was just the quality that lacked pretty hard. Honestly you can get a better burger just about anywhere else. Everything else was so on point that I will definitely be returning

Patricia Schwartz

Service was good. The dirty fries were really tasty - kind of exotic. The Reuben was pretty tasty but I thought kind of skimpy on meat.

Silas Miller

Always tasty. Great cocktails!

David Grace

Very good food... can be a little too salty sometimes. Excellent service.

Robert Gagnon

Ellie Hagopian

I am seriously impressed with this place! Everyone in my party was very happy with their meal. Food was delicious and attractively presented. Even the coffee was very good and we are picky coffee drinkers. Definitely this will be a new local favorite!

My daughter and I shared the steak and scallops plate and it was excellent! The steak was cooked perfectly, and the scallops were tender and flavorful.

Brian McVey

Between food quality/consistency, cocktails, and staff ... it could easily be argued that this is the best restaurant in Burlington.

Scott Walters

Lisa Groeneveld

Lunch was delicious and the decor is so cozy and comfortable. I can definitely recommend.

Thomas Dalton

Amazing food and great service. One of the best restaurants in the area. Highly recommended.

Theresa McDonough

Way overpriced for what you get, yes it’s healthy hipster food but still not worth the $80 bill for dinner. Won’t be back.

Fabio Lins

Great food!

Louella Bryant

Three of us had dinner with fresh local foods and a variety of dishes and portions. I especially liked the fried lake perch, tofu in a tangy sauce over rice, and a side of fermented veggies. The waitstaff was attentive and friendly, and the craftsman decor creates a rich atmosphere. Can't wait to try the lunch menu.

Jessica Salamy

Great customer service, delicious food.

Ron Alexander

Dennis Beauregard

Fabulous delish Can't wait to go again

Randy Abair

I was excited to try this place for the first time, but I have to say I was a bit underwhelmed. The food was good, but priced like it was great.

Fletcher Rood

Great cocktails, great food and atmosphere

Joseph Normand

I had a nice experience. A little pricey with a small menu. Ruben was amazing.

Julio Martínez

Jeanne Hsieh

Nice decor, excellent service, tasty food (though the octopus was overcooked). Definitely recommend!!

Jelly Beans

It was awesome. We reserved a table for 7:45 but it wasn't ready so they sat us down in the lounge, we ordered drinks, and they gave us apps on the house. The food was awesome- I ordered the pasta bolognaise and that was great.

Ernest Kottenbach

Great environment & amazing food, Wow!

Garrett Watson

A must-visit in Burlington! A great, open space, with a huge bar to sit at, or a raw bar to pull up to and watch the kitchen hum. We stopped in on a Friday night because it was close (and beside Zero Gravity), and were blown away. The wait was short for two seats at the raw bar. We pulled up and got to watch the chef serve up seafood and salads all night. Great selection of East Coast seafood. We a taster of oysters and the tuna poké to start, but the mushroom polenta was the real star of the night. The creamiest and most delicious polenta, topped with incredible supple roast mushrooms, a poached egg in the middle, and the most flavourful mushroom broth to top it all off. We seriously battled over who got to scrape the last of the broth out of the dish. We also had the chickpea fritters (great for sharing), and finished off with a great piece of sour cherry pie and ice cream. Best restaurant in Burlington. The beer list is next-level. I expect good beer when I cross into Vermont, but this is well curated, with up-coming legs listed as well. A good selection of mostly European bottles to complement the local heavy tap list. A really solid cocktail menu as well. Service was quick, friendly, and the chef even made sure we had enjoyed everything and asked us if we had any favourites. Can't wait to come back!

Noah Barton

Soul nourishing food, great libations and wonderful staff

Poisoned Pens

Weird rules - have to order food/drinks at the bar for the outside tables but waiters bring the orders out. Inefficient at best. Also a bit pricey, considering. I guess they spent a lot on the décor. Definitely a hipster hangout.

Marty Gleason

Nice atmosphere, friendly service, creative menu with healthy options and a good drink list.

Patrick Mallahan

Tasty food and plenty of adult beverage options. Outdoor seating is great on nice days. The service here was prompt and professional.

Min Grange

Best trout I've ever had. My husband got the fish fry and was super happy with his meal as well. The Ambiance is warm and cozy while still being modern. Definitely our new go to!

Joshua Mayo

Rueben was terrible.

Dan Patnoad

Good food and an interesting menu.

Ted Leanhart

Very accommodating staff and the pasta bolognese was great

Samuel Jones

"Grilled Bread" = burnt toast. Pretentious.

Nunya Bizzness

I’ve eaten here several times. Limited breakfast but very good and the coffee can’t be beat. Lunch and dinner is always fresh and well prepared. Waitstaff are efficient and very welcoming. No pretension here, casual atmosphere and I like it.

Bryan Hulvey

Carol DelGaudio

Innovative and delicious menu options

Nicole Curler

Beautiful atmosphere ! The fried squash blossoms, oysters with a rhubarb sauce and dirty french fries were delicious!!! The pricing and serving size of the roasted Maine cod was disappointing, to many different styles going into 1 dish. My dinner dates enjoyed their dishes.

Troy Frostad

Nice atmosphere, great staff. I have visited several times and have consistently had good food and service. They have a good raw bar, an interesting menu with small and large plate offerings, and a great beverage selection including the best espresso in town.

Jon Mendel

Great bar. Great restaurant. This is an off menu Fish House Punch!

William Kinney

Amazing

K Camp-Louise

Friendly & helpful bar tender, great food

Joshua Wicks

Kennon Young

Delicious food! Nice decor. Great brewery next door.

Beal St. George

Just the best spot for food in Burlington. Laid back atmosphere within a well-curated restaurant. The food is of the highest caliber: delicious, fresh, local ingredients mixed with perfect preparation. A divine culinary experience and simultaneously laid back. Could not be better.

Steph Miles

Walked in and managed to get a table on what looked to be a busy Tuesday evening. The food was delicious...as was their cava! The staff were welcoming and friendly and the food didn’t take long to come out at all, given there were so many tables to tend to.

Rick Valenta

The best lunch spot on pine street and one of the best in Chittenden county period. Beautiful vintage bar, great staff, tasty food and drink options, and a real fireplace to keep it cozy during the winter. I can't get enough of The Great Northern and this is now a weekly stop in for me.

Carol Jaramillo

My husband and I stumbled across this place and so glad we did. Our server was so attentive and polite. The food is fresh and local. My dish, eggs benedict with a scallop cake was unbelievable! The eggs were perfectly poached and the holladaise sauce--such a great flavor. My husband's burger, he said, was wonderful...beef from LaPlatte farm. Dessert was an almond cake with creme freche cream, berries in a brandy sauce and ice cream, shared with hubby, finished with a beautiful crafted cappuccino. Highly recommend. My new favorite place!

Pati C.

Food is delicious!

Jacqueline Bassett

Great food, ambience and service. Highly recommend coming here.

Marie FOY

Nourriture médiocre et froide. Les viandes sont grasses et de qualité limitée. L'huile de friture est due pour être changée. Le personnel est agréable et souriant.

John Pierce

Good and interesting food at a reasonable price.

Patrick Berkeley

The clams, trout, and pickled veggies were delicious. The trout came on a bed of fancy mushrooms, onions, and squash. Gin and tonic and old fashioned were strong and balanced. Atmosphere was a bit noisy but laid back. Service was excellent.

Joe Larose

We were here for an apple pie baking challenge. They were closed for normal business but the event was fun, the staff was friendly, the food and drink they had was very good and we'll be going back for real soon!

Eliza Goodhue

Amazing flavor profiles and taste-gasm experience! Definitely going back.

Delicious food, attentive service, delightful ambience. Reasonably priced.

Tried the scallop ceviche, beet salad with crispy tofu- all came out timely, delicious, good presentation. A bit pricey but worth the flavor- great for anything from a business lunch to a girls night out or a date night.

S B

Always a great experience! The management and the staff are incredibly accommodating. The food is perfect and the presentation is always pleasing. My favorite is the scallops appetizer and the crispy chicken and rice. Or the tofu bowl...ohhhh man. Yummy!

Carl Sedon

Excellent choice for beer, food and wine...plus the twin peaks connection!!

Niki Patel

Thomas Edgerton

Cute restaurant!

James Hawke

Good service and good food. A bit pricey and kinda small portions.

Molly Conant

Fantastic new restaurant!! We sat at their beautiful bar and enjoyed a few of the house cocktails ("Run Through the Jungle" is so good!!) as well as the grilled octopus and a burger and fries. Hard to choose though because every menu item sounded appealing!

Christopher Lei

A group of friends and I got to check out this new restaurant that had only been open for about a week, at the time of this review. Great atmosphere and interior design, really transformed the space from the previous South End Kitchen. Service was really good and attentive. Food was delicious. Images in this review were: Dirty French Fries: Smoked Pork, Gochujang Aioli, and Spicy Pickles. This is def. a great share plate. Could have used a bit more gochujang. The spicy pickles was a nice pairing. Salmon Tartar with Ikura and Miso: I asked for this dish without the ikura as I am not a fan of roe. Salmon tasted great. There is also a Tuna Poke on the menu. Hoping they add Salmon Poke to the menu. Roasted Maine Cod: Cod was silky and flaky, which is what you want. Will definitely be coming back here.

This is one of my favorite dining spots in the Burlington area. The atmosphere is very nice and cozy, though it is a rather large space. The entree options are a bit scarce, but the crispy chicken entree is one the best things i've eaten in a long time. The dirty fries are very good as well, though it would be nice if the pork was pulled, as opposed to just chopped up in to cubes and thrown in (fat and all). I think the prices are fair, and the portions sizes are good. Overall, this place is definitely worth a try!

Carl Peoples

The Great Northern is a very good restaurant with a small menu comprised of fresh, locally available foods. When we visited, I had an asparagus soup that was delicious along with a nice entree. For those who enjoy a beer with their meals, The Great Northern had a number of good beer options to accompany the food. In fact, we passed on the nearly-exclusively IPA and sour draft list at the neighboring brewery tasting room and went straight to the Great Northern and were pleasantly surprised at the options.

Lauren Schalski

Aaron Elliott

The Reuben was quite superb! Fries were deliciousness all their own, perfectly crispy and seasoned. Would recommend for a lunch.

Austin Rdzanek

Service 5 stars. Food 4 stars.

Go here! Now! Just get in your car and GO! Chef Pace is unrivaled and his food is amazing. If you appreciate delicious local food and a welcoming atmosphere, this is the place for you. You won't be disappointed!

Robin Brace

Great service, good food, solid options for vegetarians....oh and good beer!

jonathan abodeely

One of my new favorite places to go in Burlington. Tremendous food, great staff, and really amazing space (check out the woodwork on the bar). I highly recommend the crispy chicken sandwich for lunch!

Ryan Peacock

Pretty good. Kinda got this early 1900s posh to it. The foods pretty good too! The menu is fairly unique.

Laura Webb

Delicious and delightful.

Jaz Holiday

Unique and delectable dishes, super friendly and attentive staff and the interior is gorgeous! Whether you’re visiting or you’re a local this place is a must! The polenta is dangerously good, the tuna poke and oysters are fresh, and the dinner is one you won’t forget.

Chris Lavallee

A bit pricey but very high quality food and a great atmosphere. Good for a special occasion.

Pete Bruhn

Great food, great cocktails, great atmosphere. Love Great Northern!

Ali Douglas

Dan & Gillian Roach

Excellent breakfast and tasty drinks.

Morten Bo Svendsen

This was the best food experience we have had on our trip to Vermont. Delicious food, great drinks and outstanding service. We are considering to revisit The Great Nothern for dinner before returning.

Michael Robinette

They have an awesome beer selection and make great cocktails. Their oysters are on point as well! Great experience!

I'm not easily impressed with any type of restaurant but this one was Very Good which probably translates into Outstanding from all of my peers and friends.

michael h

Scallop ceviche was the best I have ever had!! Right next door to zero gravity as well

Derek Wheeler

Pretty disappointed with this place on our first visit. We live nearby and have been wanting to try The Great Northern since it opened and finally got a chance to go visit recently. There was some good, some mediocre and some bad parts of the experience so I will break it down: - The bar is excellent. Knowledgable bartenders, interesting and well mixed cocktails, good tap and a decent wine list. Not to mention the bar itself is a wonderfully restored work of woodcraft. I will definitely be coming back to chat with the bartenders and try some more of their creations. If this place were just the bar I would give it at least 4 stars. - The food is good but overpriced. The portion sizes are relatively small and I did have a dish come out completely unseasoned, which for a place that serves entrees mainly over 22 dollars a plate is quite surprising. I ended up sending it back and getting something else that was quite delicious but still overpriced for the portion size. Based on bang-for-buck ratio in this price range I can think of half a dozen other places in Burlington where I would rather spend my money. - The table service was pretty bad. We were quoted 15-20 minutes to get a table and ended up waiting well over 30 minutes. No problem, we just hung out at the bar and had an app and some really great cocktails. After we were seated our server was very nice, although she seemed a bit overwhelmed. When I sent back the afore mentioned unseasoned plate she apologized and allowed me to order something else. However, when the floor manager came over to ask me about the plate I sent back she a) didn't know that I had ordered something else since, b) didn't apologize for the dish in the first place and c) asked if I could have "just put some salt on it." She seemed offended that I would send back a plate of food at her restaurant. All that said, I will probably go back and try the food again, though this time I will sit at the bar. Hopefully my experience was an outlier but if it's indicative of the way they manage the floor I won't be looking to get a table here any time soon.

Lori Jackson

Great food

Parker Hoblin

Really amazing flavor combinations in the lunch menu. Great cocktails, oh, and two words, "raw bar."

Will

Great cocktails. Great oysters. Mediocre main dishes

Elliot Schneider

john paz

Awful service the place was empty 6/30/17 & it took almost 1/2 an hour for service. Wait staff more interested in serving themselfs than customers a sham seeing as how the food was ok

Jonathan Stevens

Friendly service and delicious food.

Mary Liesenberg

LOVE. Closest piece of Cali I can find here in Vermont... food is BOMB. Dirty fries, I love you. Also anything seafood I’ve had here has blown my socks off. Definitely a pricey dinner date option but priced appropriately for the quality the chef is putting out. Always great service here too!

Josh Neilson

Food was delicious, as were the beverages. A bit spendy for what we got. 75$ for 2 burgers (no fries, only a couple of pickle slices), a salad to share, and 2 drinks. Parking in the lot was challenging (impossible), despite the restaurant being mostly empty. Luckily there was still space on the adjacent street. Our service was excellent.

Daniel Curtin

I've been here once for lunch and at least five times after dark. The food has been creative, delicious, and most importantly, consistent. It has a good staff, an attractive inside. What could I say...

Paxton Hyde

Varied menu and very tasty. One gripe (experienced both times I have gone, with different waiters) is that they take your plate away as soon as you are done and seem to be rushing you in general.

Tim White

The best new restaurant to hit Burlington in many years. Good food, well-prepared, and lacking only the sad pretentiousness of most local restaurants. A clean, well-lighted place with a great fireplace and an impressively massive bar. Lots of interesting and tasty items to both eat and drink.

Deborah Malgeri

All I can say is go.

Matt Gang

So good! I love the dirty fries.

Kassie Theriault

Poke is the best,s and cocktails above amazing

Charlotte Paul

Hostess and waitress were positive and friendly. We shared the fish fry (perch) special, creamy polenta, and dirty fries. Everything was mouth watering and delicious. I had a Run in the jungle cocktail which was also a hit. This is a really special place.

Raffi

Excellent choice for a seafood dinner, a vegetarian meal or a meat dish for that matter. The raw seafood bar has a nicely crafted selection of shrimp, ceviche, clams, shrimp, fish and oysters amongst others. They also have a very nice drink selections with many bourbons to pick from.

Kylie Halpin

Such an awesome find on the South end! We stumbled on this spot a few months ago and have come back several times for brunch. The cocktail menu is fantastic and the food is exceptional. Our server was so sweet and genuine, the experience was perfect across the board!

Visiting from NY we talked to the brewers from Zero Gravity and they recommended we go to The Great Northern for food and drinks. We loved it. It was two of us so we sat at the bar but it was cool. The drinks were good. The food was amazing. The entertainment and environment was right on. Friendly staff and surprisingly low prices. Will be back.

B Flack

Hearty with an adventurous twist. Lots of well behaved kids at early seating and an awesome place to go on a date because it’s interesting - both menu and atmosphere. Great space - not too big or too small. New tastes with many local ingredients, i.e. early spring nettle miso soup - Great fries! Fun and fair prices.

Nick Loxha

We visit VT once a year from NYC and The Great Northern is where we dine! Excellent local restaurant with great tasting inovative dishes.

Steve Flood

Fantastic food, great atmosphere, super friendly.

Natalie Randall

A local friend took us and there were no tables available. The hostess kindly created a Dining spot for us in the waiting area which we thought was more desirable and comfortable than the dining tables. The food was excellent and I would make a special trip to go again. We shared everything so tried a lot. Don’t miss: Grilled octopus , crispy chicken with forbidden rice, dirty fries. Staff beyond friendly and accommodating.

Julian Angell

Very nearly perfect. Presentation was beautiful, wait staff was friendly and fairly quick, and the food was unique and delicious. It was a little too salty, and the lighting could be improved. But other than that, it's a nice, classy way too enjoy comfort foods with novel, delicious additions.

Carl Jacobs

My husband and I went out to celebrate my 14yrs anniversary at The Great North restaurant on Pine st, Burlington VT. I had ordered a chicken and scallops. My husband ordered the red snap fish! OMG! The food was fresh and delicious! The service was great. I'm strongly to recommend to this Restaurant

Claudio Toro

Really good! Great service, well located, and very tasty food!

Nate C

They don't take reservations. Went there and attempted to get a table, was told it was a two hour wait. Waste of my time to drive there, will not be visiting again.

Molly Clark

Awesome spot - the menu is eclectic, the food is delicious, great beer selection, and it's not overly crowded so you can actually get a table.

Bob Leidy

Coffee and a breakfast sandwich in front of the fire on the first snowy morning. Perfect!

hannah townsend

Love this place! I find it difficult to find consistently delicious restaurants. I have NEVER been disappointed with Great Northern. They have such good fun food! Definitely my go-to place.

Kris Rider

Waited entirely too long

Anthony Duck

Great menu, fresh from the farm food and friendly atmosphere

Jeffrey Durochia

Screaming fast service, attention to detail, amazing food, couldn't recommend more highly! Get here as fast as you can!

Christopher H

Great modern American restaurant next to one of Burlington's more popular breweries. It's no surprise then that they have fantastic -- and varied -- beer selection that highlights local favorites and international beers. (But if you're not drinking they also have great coffee as well.) Service was very proper and attentive as well. Their menu rotates by the season and has a great variety with an emphasis on new twists on Italian-American. Their polenta was great when I visited. They best mainstay on their menu is their dressed up fries. Imagine a messy montage of pickled veggies, fresh crema and pork belly. It's a must have!

Kevin Thorley

Miss Meghan

Best service, food, atmosphere around. Super clean. Can't say enough! Menu is very well thought out. Delish!

Lisa Paige

Beautiful restaurant and staffed well. Food is high quality and presented with flair. The seafood stew is outstanding.

Al Getler

Wow! A friend invites me here for breakfast. A kickass breakfast sandwich in a real nice dining environment. I knew the previous place that was here. What they did with the transplanted bar in this place is worth the visit alone. Would love to know the history of the bar!

Leonardo Cepeda

When it comes to meat they are the true King of the North

Joe Lemaire

Amazing food, great vibe. Right next to Zero Gravity, and across the street from Queen City - perfect!

Eric Lessard

Amazing food and great service!

Nick Hadsel-Mares

Love this place. Great service period. Menu changes often and it's always a treat to eat a nice dinner here.
