After a long wait (an hour at 10:45) we got a seat by the window and had an enjoyable brunch with the smoked salmon over buckwheat pancakes and chorizo & egg tacos. Both very tasty. Service was quick and friendly - small coffee cups refilled often.
Awsome food. I recommend stopping here anytime you get a chance.
The huevos rancheros were delish. I got them with tofu instead if eggs! The banana bread with maple walnut cream cheese was great! Pancakes were very good. My husband and I will go again. Highly recommend. Peak hours are a bit of a wait.
Great food!
Great breakfast dishes! A real find!
Long wait great food tho
Great breakfast place a bit pricey food is excellent no espresso but next door there is and they have great food too. I thi k it is o wd need by the same people.
Love the atmosphere but it can get very busy here. Expect to wait at least half an hour. Eclectic menu, but the Gingerbread pancakes and home fries are the things that dreams are made of.
Arrived Sat @ 10:00 AM and was seated within 5 min! The staff is extremely friendly and very efficient in serving the guests. Eggs - moist Sausage - garlicky and yummy Home fries - very tasty Breakfast sandwich - very generous Pancakes - fluffy and real maple syrup! Coffee - not the best Other than the coffee everything was very good.
Try the biscuits and herb gravy. Yummy.
My family and I wanted a breakfast place and after a brief search, I wanted to try Penny Cluse Cafe. I called to make a reservation but because we were a smaller group, we had to put our name in and wait. After 40 or so minutes, we were able to sit and order. We ordered chorizo tacos, corned beef hash, the chicken and biscuits, and kale and eggs. I enjoyed the corned beef, it wasn’t too salty and it was homemade, which is a plus. The biscuit was a little dry, but nothing a little butter and strawberry jam couldn’t fix. I tried the chicken and biscuits, and the herbs were a bit off putting. I think it might have been too much rosemary. I also had some kale and it was cooked and seasoned perfectly. It was a fun place to try out and the service was outstanding.
Amazing food and wait staff will be going again next time I'm in Burlington.
Very good food and service.
Went with high expectations. Heard good things but the place fell short. Parking is difficult and requires payment. Menu items were typical but with nice unique flair yet when looking for breakfast staple food, it didn't deliver. Very nice wait staff and pleasant service.
Great ecclectic breakfast and lunch Cafe, inexpensive and quick.
This interesting Mexican fusion restaurant is often busy. I'm not sure it's worth the wait so pop nextdoor and eat the more limited menu from the cafe, the wait is shorter and the kitchen is the same.
A long wait but worth it!! Varied breakfast and lunch options. Farm fresh ingredients, creative omelets, pancakes, breakfast burritos or tacos. Everyone's food arrived at the same time. Friendly staff! Great drinks! I make sure to eat here anytime I come to visit Burlington!
BEST place in Burlington for REAL home made food! Never have had a bad meal here, the "spuds" are STELLAR! But try everything, you won't be disappointed! Waitstaff is friendly, professional and always welcoming! Prices are modest: NOT cheap, NOT expensive. Quality is right up there, even the jams are homemade, so don't complain! Also it's well worth the wait to get in, as I notice other reviewers have commented on the long lines and the noise. There's a small upstairs dining area, it's NOT as noisy up there and more private. Both breakfast and lunch fare are superb! Thanks Penny Cluse!
Wonderful brunch spot. Service was fast & friendly and the ambiance inside was delightful. We had a cozy little table right at a window. I'd certainly recommend it but wouldn't call it a "must do" spot in Burlington. There are tons of great brunch spots here.
Great food, very impressed.
Penny Cluse hardly needs a review but I will confirm they are the most delightful place to have breakfast in Burlington, I have not had lunch there. They are extremely organized and really have it together. We arrived just before 8 on Sunday and there was a line, not too intimidating but a reminder that it is a delicious place to eat. They have multiple juice choices for mimosas and the price is reasonable, $6. I had a French toast special that was out of this world, maple cornbread. I would highly recommend sharing a bucket o spuds and banana bread with your table. Get it even if you're alone and take it home, so good. Staff is pleasant and service is quick. They are ready for the constant crowd. I'd say you should plan on a wait or get up early but either is worth it.
Amazing local food prepared well. No line during off peak hours on a Monday afternoon. Courteous staff and quick service make this cozy location a gem for locals and tourists alike. The breakfast burrito was a standout.
Great food, great service!
Best vegetarian biscuits and gravy Ive ever had. Unstoppable. So good. Always visit when Im up from NYC.
Fantastic breakfasts, organic ingredients, and a comfortable atmosphere are among the highlights at this local gem. The only real downside is the fact that none of these facts are secret, so there's usually a wait. My last visit was on a Tuesday morning at around 10 a.m. and there was a 15 minute wait, and plenty of other people in line. Fortunately, once you're seated the friendly service and fantastic food make the wait a distant memory.
After reading a lot of reviews to try and figure out the best time to go to Penny Cluse, we decided to get up early on a Saturday and joined the line that had gathered about 20 minutes prior to opening, and we were one of the first people inside! The service here is absolutely stellar - as a lot of other reviewers said - and the food is of course amazing as well. I got apple cake french toast and a single gingerbread pancake (their menu is fairly customizeable) and my husband got biscuits, gravy and eggs. Their coffee was delicious as well. I loved having breakfast here - make sure to visit if you get the chance!
Must have Tofu Ginger Peanut Scramble! WOW
Local favorite. I recommend Bucket of Spuds. This building was a Ben and Jerry's scoop shop, long ago.
this is truly my favorite brunch place i've ever been to! their french toasts specials are amazing. i always fresh fruit with it and theirs is not like most. i usually expect melon, or a few berries but each time they've put different seasonal fruits such as bananas, pear, mango, kiwi, and peaches. they could easily overprice everything on their menu considering they're located in the heart of burlington and the quality of their food is amazing but it is so reasonably priced. the atmosphere in there is everything i want in a breakfast joint and the service has always been great. eating here is the highlight of my trip every time i come up! how did i not know of this place when i lived in montpelier?!
Fantastic breakfast place. Great food and service. You do have to get there early though.
Can’t say enough great things about this place. I’m not a breakfast person but I absolutely love this place. Kids friendly. The food is exceptional. Service is amazing. They are fast too! Oj tastes wonderful. Hot chocolate is perfect for winter. Their coffee can be stronger but it’s just my preference. I highly recommend if you order something with home fries, make it a mini bucket-o-spuds instead!
The food was great! I boyfriend had the egg burito and I had a cheddar and bacon omelette. I was so excited to find out they had corn muffins! Yum!
Cute place with friendly waitstaff. My breakfast was awesome!
Fast seating. We liked that the food did not feel greasy. The salmon is great and the hash was unique and yummy. Biscuits and gravy were okay. Overall we would come again but weren't blown away.
Delicious food and great flavors! Get the hash browns. You will not leave hungry. The line and wait can get pretty long if you go on a busy time for Sunday brunch, but totally worth it! The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming. Lots of locals and regulars!
One of the best breakfasts in Burlington. Great service, fresh a delicious food. Make sure you get that herbed gravy!
Most delicious French toast I've ever had. Recommend to anyone and everyone. Plus service was excellent!
Food is very good. They have vegan options, you just have to ask to modify meals on the menu! The wait is usually quite long.
Absolutely delicious breakfast and wonderfully friendly staff
Amazing vibes here, great food (the veggie reuben is one of the best sandwiches on the planet) and great service. Only off note is that due to low ceilings, every high pitched noise like children's voices and clanking dishes seems twice as loud as usual and so the noise level there is always pretty intense. Some fabric on the walls or ceiling might absorb some of it... Otherwise, great food!
Great service and great food! I was visiting from the south so I tried their biscuits and gravy and they were delicious. Also can't say enough about the hash browns. Perfect. Love the atmosphere here as well.
First breakfast place we visited in Burlington. Quick wait and we sat right at the bar top. Co atmosphere and the food was really good. Would recommend to anyone. Large groups might have tough time fitting.
Worth the long wait. The service was friendly and quick. I had the chili lime chicken special, it was cooked perfectly. The meal was full of flavour. Would definitely return and recommend. The menu had something for everyone.
It can be good, but it is really an uncomfortable eating environment.
Friendly and fast service even when very busy, and excellent food! Highly recommend!
Friendly, fast service. Lively without being crazy crowded. (We got there early. I'm thinking you should get there early.) The food was tasty, the coffee was good, we were in and out in an hour without feeling rushed at all. Two enthusiastic thumbs up!
This place is a gem. I came in to get coffee and a snack and ended up ordering so much I had 2 doggy bags. Upscale diner style food with creative twists and super friendly service. I highly recommend eating here!!
Great food, fast service, worth the wait!
Food is great. Service is good. All around good experience. There maybe a line but it's so worth the wait
I was skeptical, but the Tofu Scramble is the way to go!
Solid local cafe, enjoyable decor and friendly staff. The pancakes were excellent.
Cozy place. The herb cream gravy is amazing.
This is hands down my favorite breakfast spot in Burlington. The food is superb and the service is on point. Love the omelettes here ❤
Only place in America that can screw up breakfast. Hard to get to and not worth the effort. Had to pay extra to get meat with my breakfast and it was way over priced for what you get.
Food was good service was good turn over the tables very fast things were a little spicier than I expected or wanted
Delicious pancakes.
Great Mexican dishes. Hash was OK, not very much meat. Coffee was very diner standard. Waitress friendly, food arrived hot and quick. We will be back.
Great food, great service, breakfast all day.
Always a delicious meal! Good ambiance and prefect brunch place
Really nailed the breakfast classics. I had the basic breakfast and the home fries are so good. I like the ambience and the cozy vibe of the place.
Great food, service and no wait this morning.
Ordered Biscuit and gravy watermelon plate TASTY
Frankly overrated! Menu does not offer sausage-gravy and biscuits! They did have a tasty herb gravy over biscuits, but the gravy was insufficient amount to eat the biscuits. Ordered homemade sausage on side, would have tasted better if it wasn't charred on one side. Homemade corn beef hash had almost no corn beef. There are far better tasting, and better priced, breakfast options in downtown Burlington.
This place is a home-run every time... Just wish the wait was shorter (or they let you put your name on the list over the phone)
Wow. This place was amazing! Fresh and delicious. You can tell they really care about the food they put out and our waitress was attentive and sweet without being overbearing. I’d give it six stars if I could!
Great food at any time of the day.
I love this place
Great food! Take your classic diner and add organic ingredients with more healthy options and you get Penny Cluse. Also, a lot of southern who have reviewed this restaurant were appalled at the gravy because it does not contain sausage. First, when you are traveling to other states, they may interpret dishes differently. Vermont leans heavily on healthy food. Second, the gravy tastes delicious! It’s an herb based gravy with scallions on top (not like another reviewer who called them onions LOL). Overall - a great brunch but get there early! Long waif
I love this place... So this is another biased review of how great this place is.
Huge portions and so tasty!! Vegetarian options
Pancakes were awesome!
Love this place, but youll likely have to wait in line. Creative breakfasts with generous portions, cozy, comfortable atmosphere. Great service. Had the Gingerbread Pancakes the last time I was here - Wow!
Great breakfast!!
Tasty food as per usual. Only 3 stars due to the ridiculous pricing. Not only were 3 buttermilk pancakes $10. But a side of bacon was $4.25 and you only get 3 strips. THREE small pieces of bacon for $4.25!!! Are you serious? I understand this place is the most popular place in town to get breakfast/brunch. But all that has done is allowed them to get away with charging whatever they want. At least the quality of food hasn't suffered... that much.
Always a pleasure stopping by when I'm visiting family. Friendly and attentive staff, amazing food, totally worth the wait.
Loved their chili lime chicken leg plate and salmon plate
Absolutely delicious!
Breakfast at it's best. Creative menu offers many choices.
Cozy atmosphere, good service, creative menu. Didn’t love the dishes we got (corned beef hash had lots of onions and too big chunks of beef for my preference) but the gingerbread pancake was great and neighbors got the fruit plate which also looked awesome.
Amazing food and drinks! There is usually a 45 minute wait, but a reason for it. Plan on going, putting your name down and walking around church st for a little while so you can enjoy this amazing breakfast spot.
The food was good but nothing special. This place was more about presentation, which they nailed, but you don't eat with your eyes.
Is great but the wait is a killer. They need to double the size!
Comfort foods, totally go there. I had the chicken stew and biscuits. Oh my! Perfect.
Great food and friendly service. Would recommend.
Breakfast was good. Eggs and biscuits we're good and my wife had a breakfast sandwich. It was good...nothing special. Just ok.
It's SO loud! Dirty dishes get thrown into plastic tubs in the dining area and the design is not set up to absorb extra noise. Acoustically it is excessively loud. Service was very good! Food was above average. Diverse breakfast menu oh, good for those who are vegetarians.
This was a fantastic place to go for breakfast. Not only were they super kind but were able to split up the order in such a way that I was able to eat both the Penny Cluse as well as the chorizo tacos! The former was phenomenal, lighter than what you would expect but so creamy and full of flavor. The tacos with the avocado salsa were dynamite! Would recommend you give them a try.
Delicious. Great service. Fun atmosphere. The freshest ingredients.... Enjoy!
Get the classic breakfast. The food was pretty good, however the bacon could have been better. Overall service was great and i will look to order the sausage next time. Hash browns are a must!
The place is nice, the staff is friendly and the food was good. We had a great time there and we would go back. A good breakfast!
Exceptionally long wait to be seated for breakfast, 45+ minutes. Menu has a variety of choices and the food wasn't bad, it was just too trendy for my taste. Others rave about their "cluse sauce", I found it to be rather bland and uninspiring. Waitstaff are courteous and pleasant.
Delicious and generous dishes.
I was really disappointed with this place. We went on a Sunday and beat the brunch crowd by an hour. However the food was awful. I ordered chorizo tacos and my black beans were hard and were served with sour cream on top, not on the side. The chorizo was bland and the potatoes were starchy and awful. My gf is gluten free so she had kale and eggs over easy. However her egg was undercooked, and she said the kale was charred and disgusting. The place is very cute, so it sucks writing a bad review as were were looking forward to brunching here before heading home to Boston, but this place is just not good.
The most popular breakfast spot in downtown Burlington, which means nothing the food & service are top notch AND it's crowded. The best time to go is mid-week and after breakfast if you want peace and quiet. But, who wants that? The morning rush us just that, but includes excellent food and a talented staff. Very highly recommended!!
The food is good, but its not a one-hour-wait good. I think there is a shortage on good breakfast places in the area per population, so this place gets over-rated. I don't want to knock it too hard--its still good food and its reasonably priced, considering, but it's not in the same caliber of foodie heaven that some of the other local dinner places are. I really give it a 3.5, but that's not possible here.
Good basic meals with some creative flair on elements. Cornbread French toast was great and service prompt and food quick to serve. Will go again.
Fresh tasting and flavorful. The pancakes were SO soft and we loved our Bucket-O-Spuds appetizer!!
Food and service are always great here!
Awesome breakfast food especially he bucket o spuds
A favorite, so tasty and fresh!!!
A unique space with delicious and very vegan friendly food.
This is my favorite breakfast place in Vermont, the service is amazing and so is the food. You just need to know the menu and get the best deal for you. They do have a lot of choices so it can be hard, but I would recommend the peanut ginger tofu scram, I know "tofu" but let me tell you it's absolutely amazing. 10/10
Busy place for Saturday brunch but worth the wait! Great food and service.
2 thing make ratings, Service and Food. Service was very good, no problem there. Food was another story. I'm from the South. We like Biscuits and Gravy. Not having any choice on the gravy should not be a problem. Here it was. The green gravy might have been okay except for the onions on top. That did it for me. Very disappointing. Don't care for onions in the gravy. I'm not a vegan. I want be back and to think somebody recommend this place. I'll let them know what kind of letdown it was. And staff, don't bother writing a reply to my rating for it doesn't matter what you think of it, what matters is you try to serve a better verity then not giving people a no choice in something like this. Hope you make changes to better serve your customers.
Great food. Amazing staff. Usually a wait, but imo always worth it!
My favorite breakfast place in the universe. The Penny Cluse itself is my favorite dish. It may take forever to get seated, but it's extremely worth it. Doesn't have a lot of frills; doesn't need a lot of frills. Name a good breakfast place with frills. The place you just described to yourself is basically Applebees. Penny Cluse is not Applebees. Arrive to this locale with an open mind and a hungry belly and you will leave a happy human
Efficient service and fabulous food. Great for lunch or breakfast any day
Best breakfast I've had in years very good service Price's reasonable
Great cozy place, love their gingerbread pancakes!
Delicious food in a comfortable setting with incredibly wonderful staff. Would recommend the pot of spuds
Awesome spot for breakfast
Delicious breakfast experience with fantastic service. All four of us loved our meals and it kept my belly full for the rest of the day. The side of gingerbread pancakes were awesome.
Great meal. Biscuit gravy is different there. Give it a try if you like cream and herbs in place of standard sausage gravy. Friendly staff.
I enjoyed the special, a cornbread french toast. Service was attentive and fast. Coffee was refilled quickly. A busy place but their system works and keeps things moving. Parking was located about a block away, 4 quarters for an hour.
Great breakfast place.there was a line to get in 15 minutes before it opened. Wonderful atmosphere and good slection of food. The biscuits where great. Don't miss this place
Expect a wait. It's busy there for a reason. I have never been disappointed with my meal or the service.
Everything here is amazing, especially their banana bread. It comes with maple cream cheese that is better than you just imagined. Want incredible home cooked Vermont fair? This. Is. The. Place.
It was good. The gingerbread pancakes were great. The server was a little blah and didn't seem very pleasant. The ambiance is a little stranger. Interesting menu especially if you like a kind of Mexican spin but definitely no Henry's diner
Very cozy atmosphere with a great selection of food.
One of the top breakfast places in all of Burlington.
Nice coffee sandwich and friendly team
Always a great meal with friendly, attentive service!
As always fabulous food! Penny Cluse for me and zy-something for my husband. Fabulous
The food there is SO DELICIOUS! And they have REAL fresh squeezed orange juice they make on order. Everything I got there was made to perfection and with a lot of care. The servers were friendly and patient. Always checking on my. I got this special apple French toast which I felt in love at the first bite. It matched great with the papaya in yogurt curry. The ambience is light, happy, friendly, family, cozy... If I was not only visiting, this would be my favorite place for breakfast/brunch.
Always great! Call ahead so you don't have to wait :)
Great place to go for breakfast. My husband and I stopped here while in Burlington. We were seated right away and given coffee, and our waitress kept refilling our cups quickly without us ever having to ask. All of the food was very tasty. My favorite thing was probably the bucket of spuds. Will definitely be back.
Fabulous breakfast and excellent service
Delicious food which is worth the wait. Attentive and efficient staff. As a self-proclaimed coffee snob, I was glad I had my coffee prior.
Placed a sizable order from their group/party menu. Everything was a big hit, and it was all well-packaged for transportation. Folks were really into the tourtière and the chiles rellenos.
Awesome breakfast but be prepared to wait.
Im from ny. Anytime i come to Burlington i always stop here. Always amazing.
Best restaurant in Burlington. Service is excellent. Food is terrific. Prices are reasonable. Their only drawback is that it is so popular it can be hard to get a table right away. I assure you it is worth the wait, but if you are in a hurry just come back another time.
Awesome place for breakfast!
THE place for breakfast in Burlington ... excellent healthy food that they are great about customizing. It is not uncommon to ha e to wait over a half hour on the weekend for seating. The nicest staff I know in a restaurant.
Wonderful, buzzy place almost for all meals, weekend brunch is really busy with waits and all. Good sausage gravy and french toast, muffins, delicious.
Best food ever, if you are visiting vermont, this is a must have.
Very nice country inspired breakfast and excellent service!
My favourite place to eat in Burlington! The posole is my number one comfort food, the tacos are perfect and the watermelon snack has forever changed the way I eat melon. The staff is lovely and I appreciate being able to drink Heady Topper at 10 a.m.
One of the best places I've been to for breakfast in Burlington it's really quick service the line seems like it's really long but it goes pretty quick
Cozy place...good food
Best breakfast, brunch, & lunch. Get your name on the list & go walk around Church Street. Penny Cluse is ALWAYS worth the wait.
Fast, good prices and delicious! Pear snack (special), biscuits with herb gravy, banana bread, turkey sandwich and cucumber salad! No complaints lovely view of downtown Burlington.
This was an excellent stop for breakfast from out of town. Great food and friendly staff made an outstanding experience on our vacation .
Food is so delicious and always includes the extra effort. Perfect example is the fruit cup as a side that includes kiwi, watermelon, and a beautiful presentation. Unexpected but appreciated. The small touches go a long way. I always stop here for breakfast my first day in Burlington.
Yum! Awesome breakfast in downtown Burlington close to other area shops.
Perfect in every way! Go early to get a window seat!
Gingerbread pancakes. That’s why this gets 5 stars. The place is quaint, adorable, and homey. I was there right at open and felt like the filled up quickly. I later found the pancake recipe online but I know I’ll definitely come back to Vermont just to come here.
Great food for breakfast or lunch
Fabulous food and service. Good menu of creative dishes that work well. The $1 upgrade for a fruit plate was worth it - melons, kiwi, grapefruit, blueberries, etc. Clean and bright.
Excellent breakfast as usual. Go midweek early for quick and easy seating.
There's a bit of a wait, but that can be deceptive. We were quoted an hour or so, but we were seated within twenty minutes. Overall, they offered above average breakfast plates for a decent price.
Mediocre and overpriced (not to mention overhyped). And in addition there's also a giant wait for hipsters to finish eating.
Excellent service, excellent food. You really can't go wrong here. Might be a bit of a wait, but if you actually stuck around you'll often jump the line of people that have wandered off. Try anything on the menu, the gravy, the Hispanic inspired, anything and everything is delicious.
Very tasty breakfast!
Friendly, quick staff. Hopping place, amazing food, great prices. Definitely a favorite to visit.
The food was good and the staff were very friendly, my only complaint is that there isn't enough meat with the dishes (hence 4 stars and not 5). As you can see from the pic you only really get one sausage with your dish, and although it tasted good it left me hungry for more.
Penny Cluse is probably the most popular restaurant in Burlington, if not all of Vermont, which is odd because it's just a little breakfast spot with about 15 cafe tables. Perhaps what makes this place such a magnet is that it's like eating in your mother's kitchen, if your mother was a great cook with a penchant for spice. The space is sunny and smells of coffee and toast, which are certainly two of the most comforting smells one can enjoy on this earth. The restaurant isn't particularly comfortable, with tables are too close together and a small, echoing space, usually replete with a number of families and kids-- but there is something so familiar, almost nostalgic about Penny Cluse. No matter what hour I eat at Penny Cluse, I almost always want the chili rellenos. Yes, even at 8am I want their crispy, egg battered chilis nestled into a ruddy fire-roasted tomato sauce. Served with black beans, tortillas, and a cabbage slaw (no mayo just crunch and lime, thank you very much) this is a breakfast that will steel you against all ice and snow blurring the view out side of the window. Now, of course I've tried the pancakes that my kids enjoy, and they are so real and perfect, that, again, they remind me of how my hippy mom made pancakes: thick and full of wheat-y goodness. If you find yourself in Burlington, Vermont -- far enough away from your mom's kitchen and its sweet memories- trudge up the stairs to Penny Cluse, even wait in line if you must- you won't regret it.
Tofu salad was large, healthy, and surprisingly delicious.
