Very nice!

Lisa Clark

Great coffee, an amazing chocolate croissant, and when you walk in, it smells like heaven. ❤️

Jeffrey Ernsting

Tom Harthan

Great pastries at a premium. Service is okay. Store lay out is a little cloudy. Could use more flow in the order and pickup layout. Friendly staff, warm and inviting environment. Nice spot though.

Ismael Becerra

Nice fresh food

Absolutely floored by your bread!! Bought x loaves! I was visiting my daughter and her family and with my 11 years old granddaughter and her Maman we stopped by to get the best baguette I have had in America in my 51 years here! So crusty and good.. felt like a real french baguette!! She left me with coffee while running an errand with Bailey and I went in to get myself something to go with it! My choice was perfect: your chocolate cookie!! Before leaving your amazing town I went back for bread coffee and that cookie !! I was curious as to what spice (s)made that cookie so delicious and my cashier/owner I believe told me!!! Now if I could only get the recipe?!!! S.V.P?? One drawback to my 2 visits/purchases I was not asked if I wanted my receipt!! I like to keep track...

Pteron

Best bread. Great spot.

Stéphanie Lachance

Everything is good! People are nice!

Jay Berger

Great fresh breads, pastries, sandwiches and salads

Samantha Holland

One of my favorite places in Burlington. It is such a treat to walk in, grab a delicious sandwich or baked good and a drink and sit in the open air eating area.

Shane White

Fantastic. Everything that you would wish for and expect in a bakery/coffee/lunch spot. Fresh ingredients, relaxed, local gem.

Teresa Lewis

Amazing place for breakfast or coffee! I enjoyed the Toasted Maple Biscuit, which was huge and spread with the most delicious raspberry jam! Locally owned, this bakery/cafe has some of the best bread around and in addition to their delicious baked items, also offers breakfast bowls, salads and sandwiches and there are plenty of options for vegetarians and vegans.

It's very simple I was born and raised in France I traveled all across the U.S every year the past 10 years. You like it or not but August first's baguette is the first one that I tried in this country that taste like home. I moved 4 blocks away from the bakery and I finished half of it on my way home, usually a struggle that you only have in France. They don't try do play the "french card" they just do it. I can't wait to try their sandwiches. This baguette makes me wanna hug the baker and say, "thank you for making me feel a little me more home in Burlington".

Katelyn Harrison

Good food ruined by poor customer service. We were rushed out the door and couldn’t order drinks because the cashier had completed the order before we finished speaking. I’ll be going elsewhere for breakfast in the future.

Simon Jung

Good food, friendly staff. Highly recommended if you're in Burlington!

Johnny Chen

Maple biscuit is great! Very cool vibe.

Jonathan Wilson

This is a place I always bring visitors. Amazing turkey sandwiches and hearty soups that help dampen the Vermont cold. No laptop policy makes it easy to get a seat and encourages conversation. Smells great. Food tends to be hyperlocal and fresh.

Jonathan Seidmann

Lovely little bakery. Their maple biscuits are amazing and a must. Come early as they can fill up quickly.

Amy Adams

I always order the same delicious maple biscuit with butter and jam, toasted. And coffee. Not one time ever have I received it warm the first time, or with butter and jam the second time.

Jake Pickens

Highly recommended. Outside seating is very relaxing, coffee was top notch, food was even better.

James Dong

Food was great! We ordered the breakfast sandwich on a biscuit and the sausage skillet. Biscuit is very dense so be prepared for a heavy meal!

Ben Cantin

Thinking of moving to Burlington so I can taste these delicious sandwiches more often. Thanks AF, you rock.

Sara Urowitz

OMG!!! Crazy amazing baked goods.

Mena Botros

Great atmosphere, coffee, and baked goods.

Julia Szymanski

If you’re not a fool, you’ll throw all your money at this place. Breakfast: maple biscuit toasted with jam. Lunch: maple biscuit toasted with jam. Dinner (if you eat before 4pm): maple biscuit toasted with jam. I was once a young fool, purchasing inferior baked goods from other places around town. Then, one day I saw the light. It was the flakiest croissant I have ever consumed. It was like experiencing birth, life, and death all in one club-sized pastry. I rejoiced as the buttery layers awoke something inside me- like the embrace of a long departed grandmother. The carbonaceous chyme gave my day purpose and nearly doubled my productivity. I mourned the loss of each flake that eluded my lips and made its way to the unforgiving sidewalk. Thoreau once stated: “He who distinguishes the true savor of his food can never be a glutton; he who does not cannot be otherwise.” I’ve know grade-A gluttons that have been thrashed by the humbling flavor profiles of these baked goods. You will find yourself reflecting on moments from your childhood as you taste innocence, joy, and curiosity for the first time in your life. You will find yourself taking 30 minutes to eat and experience a pasty that might usually be inhaled in 12.9 seconds (if it’s of the grocery store bakery breed). You will learn to discover the true savor of food. The birds that post up outside the shop, vacuuming up any crumbs, know what’s up. Listen to them. Listen to me. Listen to your gut. Go to August First.

Good pastries and breakfast food

Megan Mentzer

Great food!!! I went here with my family, and loved it! It was nice to not have a laptop to distract me from talking. It can get a little crowded, but I had an amazing time!

Suzanne Schipper

Just had one of their macaroons!! So good!!

Tara Williams

I am so glad I found this place on Trip Advisor before coming to Burlington. It was the highlight of our vacation. The food was outstanding, especially the warm biscuit with the homemade raspberry jam! The grilled cheese was delicious, as well as the turkey sandwich I got. The chocolate croissant was so flaky and the chocolate melted in my mouth. The ice tea was very good too. We will forever talk about our delicious lunch here and if we make it back to Burlington in the future we will return!

Jer Del Nero

Came for the food. Stayed for the vibes. Delicious, healthy ingredients prepared on the premises for fun and inspired dishes. Nearly everything can be made vegan! The huge open space is warm, bright, and inviting. No laptops allowed!

Brian George

A little crazy during nice weather and the lunch hour but great food and relaxing atmosphere. They do a good job of balancing classics and mixing things up from time to time.

Chris

Nice decor and high ceilings. Breakfast sandwich is terrible... An overpriced large roll with one egg and not much cheese. No wifi and multiple "no laptops allowed" signs. They have tip jars yet they make you fetch your food. Tips for laziness?

Philip Clark

Great vibe.... amazing breakfast

I am from out of town and decided to drive around searching for a cafe to sit down and start on my homework. So then I ordered a latte and asked for the wifi password. The young man told me that it was a laptop free cafe but offered me additional locations that provided wifi after mentioning I was not a local. A young lady even offered to pour my coffee from the mug into the to-go cup after I found out about the laptop-free culture since I had homework that needed to be completed. Customer Service- 5 stars Kansas City has some very hipster coffee shops, but the looks of this one is very amazing. From the outside, there were chairs and places to sit-down at. It was very inviting and beautiful. It has a nice neighborhood feel to it. There is even free parking on the opposite side and it was very close to downtown (I drove around the entire downtown area in search of free parking spots for at least 20 minutes). Hint for non-locals. The inside was brilliantly laid out. So much seating was available and I have never been to a place that offered so many kinds of beautiful breads and pastries. I felt like I hit the jackpot of all. Atmosphere 5/5 The latte was a 4/5 stars. It was really milky-tasting and not much coffee-like, but it may be my own fault for ordering sit-down instead of to-go and the transfers between cups. But I definitely recommend locals & non-locals to give this place a shot. Locally owned, great atmosphere, and an abundance of different options available.

I’ve been here twice. The first time there were two separate hairs cooked into my weirdly small and yet somehow still expensive breakfast sandwich. This morning was my second time, where I decided to try and enjoy this place again (I really have no idea why). Aside from the rude service I’ve encountered both times, today my sandwich came with cheese on it after I asked for it without, and my boyfriend’s salad came with cheese as well, when it wasn’t labeled as having any on the menu. Gross and a double waste of money.

Steve G

Good lunch place. Works for vegetarians.

Joe Wehry

This laptop-free bistro has a healthful selection of sweet and savory bowls for breakfast or lunch.

Jacob Dubois

Delicious lunch items & coffee. Yet to try the bakery items but they look tasty.

Sophia Loch

Excellent breakfast. So many baked goods you cant gwt out without putting on a few pounds I. your waistline! :). Nice comfortable place to eat breakfast but remember, this is a bakery. They serve an egg skillet and breakfast sandwiches but it is all centered around baked goods. And be prepared to wait a bit. There is often a line and it takes a little time to get your food. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 is that their coffee is , well, not the best thing on the menu....

Jeremy Pitaniello

Food is delicious, however, the staff are really unpleasant, and at $2.50 per donut and $3++ for a piece of bread, you'd expect a bit bigger portion and better service. Only other gripe is pretty much inline with the rest of downtown; they are happy to offer discounts to bikers, but chuckled when I asked if they offered police, firefighters or military a discount. Disgraceful where this towns priorities have gone.

Pamela Doyle

Overpriced & mediocre

Carol DelGaudio

Delicious bakery and fresh sandwichs

Mark Sanchioni

Consistently very well prepared dishes that are never ordinary. A little pricey, but you get value for the cost.

Kristine Stebbins

Mark Grant

Amazing spot to get breakfast. Food is delicious and doesn’t take long. Fun atmosphere and the smell of fresh bread being baked next door. I was unlucky enough to be there on a day when their espresso machine decided it didn’t want to cooperate, but I was quite happy with their house drip.

This is the best coffee/breakfast in Burlington! I am so happy we found this cute cafe. They really have the best coffee and their food is to die for. They have a huge selection of baked goods. Their Maple Biscuit is incredible. I'm sure we will be back again soon!

Cathleen Keogh

Delicious fresh food. Great service. Relaxed atmosphere

I had high hopes for this place. But I showed up with my laptop and went to order and there’s a big sign that says “no laptops allowed”. Maybe when it becomes 1930 again I’ll grab a book and come back to enjoy the cute space.

Yuko Magoshi

One of the best croissants I’ve had.

Kris Cain

Erik Nye

Incredibly delicious loaves of bread.

Martha Jensen

This August First is one of my favorite .Nice and clean.

Meagan VanZandt

Delicious fresh baked breads and pastries, and a nice relaxing morning ambiance.

Jason P. Lorber

Always a treat. This neighborhood cafe has a great assortment of delicious baked treats, and hearty lunches and breakfasts, with lots of veggies options. Their no-computers policy creates a very social and refreshing environment. I always run into friends and colleagues that I know from across Burlington, and even the state. Friendly owners and staff, too.

Jill Rogers

That maple biscuit is good for your soul. Worth every single calorie

Josef Zwanziger

Excellent food and nice staff.

S O

They offer a good breakfast here and are all very friendly. Service is quick and accommodating.

Barry Mandelker

Great veggie selection in cool environment

Marcelo F de Abreu

Everything good — the pastries, the drinks. The spacious industrial setting (a former garage beautifully renovated) with cozy details like a well stocked bookshelf and wooden furniture is really welcoming. Rays of sun coming through the tall windows made the place even prettier. Being incredibly busy when we got there made us almost leave at once, guessing it impossible to find a table for three — but their laptop free policy actually helps with the turnover, and lends the café a different atmosphere, since people actually glance at one another instead of their screens, and converse. All seemed lovingly convivial. What still strikes me most as a memory is the hard working staff, that looked tired but kept on with the efficient service — and catching a glimpse of one of the cooks, sweating and disheveled, made me even more grateful for the food I ate (here and everywhere else, for that matter). Keep up with the good work, you have a wonderful place there!

Heather L Boyd

The food was amazing and the atmosphere was so refreshing. It was a slice of heaven. Everyone is happy and friendly, it's a perfect place to be on a sunny day! Tip: I actually enjoyed this but just so you are aware, this cafe is a laptop free environment.

While my wife and I travelled to Vermont this became our go-to for breakfast and coffee. Great variety for breakfast if you want a change up to the conventional bacon and eggs. I had an avocado toast plate with eggs on top. My wife had the grain bowl. Both were delicious. The Americano was delicious. More hints towards cocoa than molasses. The only thing that would have been nice would be if the person in the back calling out the orders wasn't consistently grumpy with customers.

Brian Connor

Good food, quick, reasonable.

Kelley H

Great coffee. Maple biscuit is heaven. Breakfast scrambles right on.

Alice Bernstein

Fresh, delicious, good-for-you food and imaginative combos in a friendly setting, and fair prices. What more could you ask for?

Khris Sellin

OMG, the avocado toast!!! This is just the cutest place and everything was delicious. Also got the home fries and my sister got the grain bowl, which also looked yummy.

James Hawke

Great spot for a quick coffee or snack!

Tyler Ingram

Great food in a chill, pretention-free environment.

Henry Harder

Jeffrey Lu

No laptops rule is ... interesting, but the maple biscuit was tremendously delicious. Really really good. They’ll ask you if you want it toasted with jam, but I don’t think any of that is necessary; the biscuit itself is bomb enough. Cute place with nice ambiance.

David Hutchinson

Visiting from Seattle we came two days in a row, it's that good. The breakfast skillet is fabulous! They sometimes print out reviews and put them on the wall - who knows, one day this might make it...

Andrew Johnson

Great breakfast sandwich. Go a little lighter on the hollandaise sauce

Douglas Hood

Quality

John Appleseed

Best baguette in Burlington.

Phil Merrick

I am one of the owners of August First. Every day Google asks me to review, so here goes. August First was created to be the place I would love to find. Relaxed and comfortable atmosphere; healthy and flavorful fresh food; great coffee and great baked goods. All baked goods from scratch, all soups from scratch, etc. Quick and friendly service. What's there not to like?

Gladimir Sanon

The food was good and I appreciate the service and what this place stand for. My only annoyance was the lack of seating and consideration for people who have ordered and have to stand and wait to sit at a restaurant. They should make it clear that patrons shouldn't take a seat until they have ordered much like skinny pancake does. Or at least ask folks to be considerate of other's when it busy. Not cool waiting for a seat when others have clearly eaten but are just sitting there looking, talking, reading, etc.

joseph flora

Watch what you say in here. If one of their girls imagines you said something not to her liking, they will tell you to leave, leaving your paid for lunch behind. Such was my experience. Be on your guard. Suggest you say only , no mam, yes mam, thank you mam. And don t raise your voice while speaking to a friend, as eyes maybe upon you. And so their is no source of embarrassment set upon you, I say, may the good lord be with you, and keep you safe.

Bob Daniels

Great space, a lot of light and the food is fresh and well done. The sandwiches are pretty good as are any of the baked items, particularly the croissants. The coffee is good all around. The parking situation is to be expected of downtown Burlington. As many times I come here, however, the service is not good. The laptop free policy is it's own oddity and debate (this isn't something people are doing on the west coast, regardless of the newspaper article on the policy) - however, the friendliness Burlington seems to have in its independent food industry is sadly lacking here and is replaced with an entitlement I've seen observed from at least one other reviewer. As such, it was my last time here. If you go, try the cookies - and remember, you're doing them the favor by eating there.

Ryan Le Blanc

This place is almost always slamming busy, but despite this, it never seems to take longer than a few minutes to get your order. This is due in large part to the staff who are always fast, friendly and inviting. The place is laptop free, which is pretty unique for a cafe like this, but it also means that you rarely have to wait for a place to sit! The baked things including their great homemade bread is the main draw here and I really do challenge you to find a better biscuit anywhere else. In addition to the awesome baked stuff they have a pretty cool and eclectic lunch menu that means there's always something for everyone. Definitely the place to go in Burlington for Breakfast or a casual, fairly quick Lunch. One of my favorite spots in the city.

Manager needs more training. After some issues ( I will not disclose at this time), he didn't handle it in an appropriate manner, nor did he hold the discussion to the level of a manager. He might be great at prepping meals, but not so great at handling issues when they arise.

Nicholas Hopkins

Devin Kelly

Derek Rycewicz

Pretty disappointing. Tasty plates somewhat ruined by the questionable dining experience. The food was okay, and the coffee quite nice. But the experience of waiting in a busy line to order from a very grumpy cashier and then dodging people in the packed, bus your own table seating area was not one we enjoyed at all. Maybe a victim of their own success? The juice just isn't worth the squeeze. Too busy and too expensive for what you get.

Joseph Fusco

Placed a "to-go" order, but wish I could have stayed. A great atmosphere staffed by smiley, friendly people. And the curry chicken sandwich was delicious. Can't wait to go back when I return to Burlington.

Hilary Steger

The food is great, but it was way to expensive. I spent 14.50 for a soda, half sandwich/soup combo. It wasn't even enough food to make me full.

Alexandra Garzero

Lovely in every way possible.

Austin Graff

Everyone raves about August First and I can see why. It's in a beautiful part of town and the inside is stunning. The high ceilings make for an airy dining area. There are tables outside. The menu is impressive. What I did love was the coffee and my wife enjoyed her maple biscuit. However, I ordered eggs and potatoes and it was not good. The eggs were dried out and the potatoes flavorless for having herbs on them. If we were to go again, I'd just order coffee.

Andrew Swift

Top of the heap for local bakeries & eateries. Famous for the 'no laptop' policy, which keeps the restaurant quiet and social (but quaintly antiquated given the popularity of cell phones!). Staff is friendly & fast, and the Maple Scones are like a Noir villian: seductive & deadly (to your diet!). Breakfast and lunch sandwiches, amazing breads and a good coffee selection are worth the visit. Great for tourists, business visitors and locals due to the downtown, walk-friendly location. One of my favorites! Very highly recommended!!

Al

Please specify whether or not a dish has cheese in it. It’s very annoying and inconvenient to have to get your meal made over again. It is very obvious that you guys don’t care about feedback, all of these other reviews are addressing your rude staff and yet they are still rude??? Please change your staff or address them with more authority.

Great atmosphere and breakfast skillets

Eric Deschambault

I love that place. Bread is awesome, coffees are delicious and breakfast are the best thing to kick start the day. Fresh ingredients is the key. Patio during the summer is a must !

The salad with chicken was fresh and the Walnut and sesame dressings were delicious. Fresh bread bagette too! Price was right. Great atmosphere and outdoor seating. A beautiful October day in Burlington.

I don't ever like to leave bad reviews but this really boggles my mind, the good way to loose customers. I wonder if they will put a sign next time that says no phones either. No laptops. This place has a not bad food even tough a little overpriced but I was willing to pay and recommended it to my friends actually since the location is so close to my office but this no laptops rule is just ridiculous when I saw it like wow! Go back in time to rural Vermont. lame

We were in town visiting Burlington on vacation, we stopped here on the way out heading home from a recommendation of my daughter's friend....our bacon, egg, cheese croissant was amazing! I would definitely recommend you stop in. I would go back if ever in town.

Kathryn Gosselin

Great food with vegetarian options!

Joey B

Busy this morning, some of the staff don't seem at ease with big crowds

Jeremy Lesniak

Thomas Brady

We waited half an hour for hot biscuits and they were worth the wait! Nice outdoor cafe feel.

Flore Costume

Love the baguettes. The crowd tends to be on the older side. It's a good place to escape the collegiate atmosphere of Burlington. Great atmosphere.

Rachel Brown

The maple biscuit is to DIE for. Wow. We also had avocado toast and the chipotle breakfast sandwich which were both incredible. Amazing food and coffee! My advice to management would be to give out those little numbered cards and drop the food at the tables because it gets very crowded/stressful at the “pick up” area (we were sitting outside and kept straining to hear our name and walking back in to check, and when you’re there you’re in everyone’s way...) Its so much nicer to relax at a table while you wait, so that small change would really improve the experience. Otherwise, awesome place!

Tucker Gino

Ginger tofu bowl is high fire. Dank selecsh of baked stuff. I love baked stuff.

Alan Semon

My goto breakfast eatery while I was in Burlington! Very nice atmosphere, great waitstaff and wonderful food selections! Everything was delicious.

Robert Rubinstein

The food was really good. Quick service and the baked goods are delicious. Seating is limited, but cozy. Great place for breakfast and the atmosphere is welcoming

dylan murphy

Great, healthy lunch options, like half kale half vegetarian chili soup for $11. They also have local beers and outdoor seating. Vermonter sandwich was also good. They do have a no laptop policy fyi.

Margi Swett

1st thing - a young man rides his bike through my neighborhood 2 days a week selling bread! How cool is that? and the bread is delicious. I won the auction at the Champlain Community Service dinner for a lunch for 20. My husband and I went down for lunch to check it out and order the lunch. I had a ham and brie sandwich with raspberry sauce - AMAZING! My husband had a salmon salad sandwich which was also incredible. All priced very reasonably.

Andrew Wagenhofer

The "A Laptop Free Establishment" is an elitist, hippie, ridiculous, out-of-date and snobby policy. Imagine how much longer people would sit and consume if they weren't shamed for being technologically engaged, and instead forced to eat and rush out! Aside from that silly sign, which we simply ignored, they have great bread and sandwiches! Cookies for dessert are a must...

Janeen Barnett

Waited a long time for mediocre food. Ambience is loud and crowded. Very disappointed.

Duane Dunston

Great food, employees, and atmosphere. Seating is quite close to the next table, but still a great place to eat.

AnuRadha Prasad

Very rustic place. However amazing baked goods.

Jared Blum

Honestly, pastries were very good. Skillets lacked a bit of flavor. But it’s the arrogant attitude that really is the drawback. There is no need for attitude like that in a service based industry.

Samuel Albrycht

Friendly staff, excellent coffee, very interesting atmosphere with quality indoor and outdoor seating.

Steven Erni

You must visit this place if you are in Burlington! We stop here every single time and it's always a pleasure. Very good atmosphere, very busy and cosy.

jnekos

Fresh baked wholesome food. Line out the door for breakfast. Line moves quickly and people are busy working here as opposed to some places that are slow due to staff and management.

Sheila Braun

Great food, great service, fantastic ambiance

Barretts Vermont

Good place for a sandwich and a sweet.

Ellenka Wasung Lott

Beyond Amazing... Maple biscuits from heaven!

Rachel Kahn

Excellent service! Delicious lattes! Scrumptious salads! Out of this world Maple Muffins!

Nancy Waitkus

They are all correct as to cinnamo buns. Wow! But price for what you get and lack of ambience off-putting. Sorry.

Christopher Boot

Made a special trip just to stop here... it was 10:30am on a Monday and they were sold-out almost everything but baguettes. We ordered some breakfast sandwiches to go since the lunch menu wasn't available and there was no seating left - place was packed! My americano tasted burnt and they didn't have any milk left for my partner's latte so she had to settle for almond milk. We left feeling a little disappointed. Cool spot though and I like that they are "laptop free."

Elizabeth Chadwick

Matt Woodside

Great service, great friendly staff. Love their lunch and breakfast is awesome too!

Chip Hart

Good cafe experience, espresso tea ect. The sandwiches are griddled for eat in and take out. I had the ham and brie. 8/10 would eat again!

Albert Orbinati

Amazing place. Great food and vibe

Nancy Mock

My cinnamon roll was wonderful!

Dave Kinney

Seating is a little tight but the food is great

Daisy Preuss

No computer policy is the best in this place! The idea is to talk and meet new people. Love this place so much.

Susan Feir

Busy place. Interesting clientele. They were out of maccaroon cookies that we were sent there to have.

Alexandra Frank

The cheese platter is highly recommended

Jasmine Hasan

Fresh bread and pastries. Nice family service. Good brownies and bars. Kids and adults will love it.

Andy Newhall

The very first food establishment my family and I visited when we arrived in Burlington, VT in summer 2012. At the time, we had no idea that we'd be making Burlington our home just a few months later. Therefore, August First will always hold a sentimental place for us. My wife's a pastry chef/baker by training, and I'm an English major. August First is a new wave bakery with literary foundations. What more could appeal to us?! The breads and pastries are great, and delivered to local restaurants by bicycle when weather permits.

Abigail Raymond

Best breakfast sandwiches in Burlington

Joe Hutson

The food here is fantastic! I had one of the egg scrambles, which was served in the skillet with maple bacon, kale, cheese, and tomatoes. It was excellent in every way. The maple biscuits and sweet and savory too, and they have a good selection of drinks. They have a “no-laptop” rule, so don’t try to do work in the restaurant. Prices are high but not bad for a place like this.

Schleifer Grigorij

Eine coole Bäckerei, guter Kaffee und leckeres Gebäck. Am Wochenende wird es hier ziemlich voll, aber die Wartezeit ist trotzdem kurz. Absolut empfehlenswert

Martin Tessier

What a fantastique place! Got the opportunity to stop there during a bike ride. Staff is howsome, food is excellent ambiance is warm and welcoming. All the ingredients required for great experience are masterd ! I want to ride again next... So I can stop to your location again!
