There is a lot that is positive about this place. But just once when I'm looking for a good place to get a pastry and a coffee with a cute atmosphere I'd like to not feel like I have to sacrifice something to get it. (Not to compare too strongly cause they are in completely different leagues) Mozart's Coffee on the river has beautiful ambiance and pretty good pastries and the espresso drinks are terrible, so there the sacrifice is the quality of the coffee. Here the sacrifice was the service. When we entered we went to the front counter, there is apparently a hostess and so the four people at the front counter said she would be coming soon. She told us there was a 20 minute wait. We said okay, could we just get something to go? We only wanted pastries and coffee. She quickly responds with "Actually we can't do any of our menu items to go. Sorry" So we clarify "Sorry, we just wanted to get a pastry and coffee is that possible to-go?" she said yes, let us order from the front counter (something that could have been offered ahead of time) and we order. The drip coffee was broken so they were only serving espresso drinks, but all their to go mugs were missing tops so they were only serving open espresso drinks. We noticed a community table that had some people at it but it was never offered so we assumed they were using it for seating so we stood awkwardly in the center of the restaurant, we weren't the only ones, it seemed that other families who were happy to wait for their table (nothing wrong with that) Were waiting by the bathrooms,at first I thought they were waiting for the restroom but the longer we were there the more we realized there just wasn't any place to properly wait in the restaurant. A nice couple behind us ordered pastries and a coffee as well and the lady behind the counter said they could sit at the community table and eat and drink them there while they wait for a table. So back to the counter I go to ask about that and yeah the community table is open seating. This sounds petty but for some place so attemptedly upscale there were too many missed moments to offer something that would have made us less intrusive guests. Instead of letting us stand in the middle of the restaurant awkwardly maybe suggest the community table. Instead of telling us that we can't order certain things to go maybe don't instantly assume people came to the restaurant only for the full meals. This would be a normal expectation if you had a hostess stand and not a large coffee shop style counter that looks as if you expect people to order a pastry and coffee. We walked in confused about where to go, with no direction and stayed confused the whole time. We ended up eating our pastries and drinking our coffee's on the patio that was closed due to rain because it just felt so unwelcoming inside, it would have been one thing if this place had the grittiness of a real french bistro, it doesn't have to cater to your every need but the lack of direction made no sense, every time we tried to adjust our expectations a new curveball was thrown and it was odd. This place makes lovely butter croissants and I'm thrilled that I get to enjoy them as they are catered to my office sometimes and it feels like that is their niche, they do well with wholesale and catering but they didn't feel prepared to handle people in their actual restaurant. I don't think I'll be venturing back, instead I'll keep looking for a cozy and more organized cafe/bistro in the city, they don't have to be the most polite but their layout/system for dealing with customers during waits or short trips needs to make sense.
Good quality, tasty food
Some of the best service
You won't find better scones. Good breads, too. Warm, welcoming, old-school place to take a date for lunch. Also, if you have a party or other celebration, and you call ahead, they will deliver if it's a large-ish order.
Oh how I love this place. All the food is great - soups, salads, sandwiches and baked goods, all amazing. I love the decor. Big open, white space, with huge windows and orange accents. Highly recommend this sweet cafe.
Love this place so much! Their french toast is delicious! A little expensive though, so beware! It also gets really crowded around 9-11 AM, so I would go earlier around 8 AM!! Especially on the weekends!
A little bakery/cafe located near UT campus. I came here during lunch and thought the sandwiches were nothing extraordinary. It's a very family-friendly location, though. Great place for a coffee/tea and dessert.
No wait staff assigned to our table. Start there while other tables were waited on. Left. Not likely to return.
Overpriced for what you get. $5.50 for a tiny ham and cheese croissant? This place has gone down hill, way better options for baked goods around town. No longer going to be spending my money here.
This restaurant is a must for locals and visitors......it is one of the best in Austin. But don't tell everyone.
Beautiful day outside... so after lunch we spent the afternoon drinking 1 beer per hour. After 3 hours they cut us off... No excuse given other than "we don't feel comfortable serving you beer that long". Regardless of how few we had. Very aggravating. Lost my business permanently.
Great spot! Delicious sandwiches and beverages!
Always a good experience and the serve was A+ as always
one of the top restaurants in austin - very few but this is one - brilliant space brilliant chef
Super chic place serving wonderful breakfast food; thick cut bacon and challah French toast. Staff was super helpful to a first timer and offered suggestions. Definitely good food, but a bit pricey. Gotta pay for quality.
Good food, nice look, free wifi But not for people that want blue, pink or yellow in your coffee
Good food and service. Parking is a nightmare! The menu is small but that's not always a bad thing
Always friendly folks, great coffee, and the best bread in town!
Had a latte and croissant. Latte was decent, 7/10. Croissant was less so, layers had zero definition, there was no shine from an egg wash, and they seemed sightly under baked, 3/10 for the price. I saw a dough flattener over in the corner that they looked like they weren't using, so I'm hoping it was broken and they're just doing what they can without it. I'd go back if someone wanted to go there for coffee, but I would avoid the croissant for now.
A nice little Bakery we found by driving by. They bake their bread daily and their cakes and sausage wraps etc. are fresh. My wife love the atmosphere because it reminds her of a French cafe.
Good lunch (and dinner) place!
Repeat offender identified! Every time I have been here I have had a great experience. The eggs Benedict is killer. It’s on fresh fluffy white bread that is hard to cut through but worth the effort once you get the bite. Worth. The. Work. Stay away from the front counter filled with baked goods too if you value your current clothing size. Lots of healthy options on the menu. Truly an Austin staple.
TFB is a permanent option in our brunch rotation. The tostadas are well put together with the right amount of savory crunch. As a sweet alternative, the challah French toast entree hits the spot with thick pillow like bread that’s crisp and sweet on the outside. The house cured bacon is thick cut and unique. All the coffee, espresso, and latte options are served to order.
Great coffee and pastries. A little more upscale than most places near campus
Farm to table feel, fantastic brunch!
Really lovely space, friendly staff. Best macchiato I've had in Austin, hands down. The toast with jam was heavenly. There's also free wifi.
One of my favorite places to grab a muffin, sandwich or a coffee (they do great hearts). I love the atmosphere. They are a bit pricey, but the food is really good and seems fresh!
I LOVE THIS PLACE! I go at least once a week. Everything is delicious!!!
I love the menu, yes it is a bit overpriced but they make up for it in quality. A great spot for a couple's weekend brunch. Go here with your lover or alone- both experiences will be relaxing and fun. Between the two of us, we got two orders of their French Toast and one order of Egg Tostada. And I got a nicely made Cortado. All the brunch items I mentioned are a MUST have. Next day we went, I tried their lunch menu which was very average. So stick with breakfast/brunch menu. I will be returning but I really hope they step up their service. Once the staff had served us our meal, they did not once come back to check on us, not for refilling my coffee or to ask if we needed anything else and that was HIGHLY annoying cause I kept having to look over my shoulder to get their attention. Please train your staff to be a bit more attentive.
Really good food, affordable, good service, nice atmosphere and really nice people.
Amazing spot in a cool brick and wood building. I went here every day of my trip for breakfast once I tried their cappuccino which is exceptional. Te best breakfasts I tried were the breakfast tostada and the avocado toast which I had on the rye sourdough. A+++++
I used to live nearby and would stop for a pastry every so often, if they still had any. I finally sat for a meal not too long ago and was impressed with their speed and attentiveness. The space itself is antique and natural and feels very welcoming to anybody, whether casual diner or fancy date. Reasonable amount of parking in the back and great selection of pastries and other goods at the counter. Wine and beer available, too.
Service was absolutely terrible. It took 34 minutes for us to get three coffees only to get the wrong coffees!!! The food was just ok when it finally came out after 27 minutes after ordering it. The girls who work here are unprofessional and look dirty. Management should pay attention before this place HAS to close!!!
Yum! Highly recommend the French Toast.
My goodness, the food here is delicious - carefully considered and interesting flavors. Of course a little pricey, so it's best for a special night out. The servers were really nice and easy to talk to. We even received complimentary baked goods on our way out. You can bring your own drink of choice, which is neat. The atmosphere was homey, clean and beautiful. We loved everything we ordered.
Over-hyped place imo. It was pricey and the portions were small - two things I never want to see at a breakfast place! Small egg and spinach omelette with a side of potato wedges was $12 and very basic. Also the waiter was dropping stuff and brought me the wrong coffee. Also the AC was dripping on me. I know I'm just complaining now but honestly people it's not worth the wait.
Breakfast in zen mode. The outdoor setting makes for a relaxing morning. Great breakfast. They only lost a star because they were a little shy with their bacon portion but that’s coming from someone that could eat a pound of it in one sitting! Would definitely come back here again.
We had a great evening at TFB! The chilled zucchini soup was new and special. The market salad was generous with such fresh lettuces. The lamb with the sweet potato was really excellent. We love their wine selection. No room for dessert.
Got purchase wrong, food slow to be served, nut bread old. Overrated.
Went for Sunday brunch. Food was good, service was friendly, but it was pricey for what we got, and an extremely noisy atmosphere. We had to shout at each other to talk. We would only go back at really slow times.
Would come here a lot for coffee, espresso was always pretty good, baristas were talented. Would get cute drawings likes swans or turkeys on my coffee. Last couple of times I went In it had noticeably dropped in coffee. I asked around apparently the owner fired the only person who understood the espresso machine. You would think that’s something the owner would take the time to learn and teach their staff. Much better options within 3 blocks of coffee is all you want.
Everything we ordered was great. So fresh and flavorful. The fresh baked bread and butter was a tasty treat. So glad we opted to share the butterscotch pudding that was awesome. Can't wait to return!
Great vibe! Beautiful bread...a must good!
Everyone at our table was enjoying everything. The staff was very friendly and kind. This place has a good design. This place has positive reviews for a reason.
TFB is a great spot for Sunday brunch. And if the weather is nice, enjoy it outside in their courtyard area across the parking lot.
As a former employee of TFB, I'll say this for them. What they do right they excel at. Great espresso, great bread. Their food is high quality. They make a walnut and currant bread that will knock you off your feet. What they do badly is service, and I can say that because I was a baker there for two years. I can only blame management for the uneven --sometimes wonderful, sometimes breathtakingly rude -- service I've received. Don't get mad bc I only ordered the salad. Ask me if my coffee is to go. Quit assuming. Don't offer coffee during dinner service and then get mad when customers take you up on it. If I pay $5 for a cappuccino, you can bet I want it in a ceramic mug. This last example happens all the time. By the way, some of this behavior is from the guy who's the manager, not some underpaid student. I'd love to see them stick around for another twenty years. It's such a beautiful little place to have a cup of coffee. I just wish that I knew what I was stepping into when I walk through the door. It's an adventure, and not in the good way.
I love the Pimento Cheese! It's my favorite. Also my absolute best pick for brunch on a Sunday. Can't beat this coffee and atmosphere. Just right. Try the crepes for brunch or the schnitzel.
Love the ambiance, just bought bread and a croissant, so will have to come back to eat later, smelled wonderful though.
Great food, great atmosphere, great service, and awesome chi lattes
Always fresh food and great people. For those unaccustomed to quality products and service, occasionally things take a bit longer than fast food. IT'S WORTH IT!!!
Nice place, but Little bit too expensive imho
Food was great and it came out in a timely manner although our waiter was a bit slow and did not seen to want to be working.
We had dinner there after a graduation, and everything was phenomenal. We are from out of town, but if not for that, this place would become a regular for us. The food and the place were amazing, and its namesake bread is even better. A truly great way to end a great day.
The food was good — I would say better than your average diner breakfast. The reason for the 3 stars is because the cost was insane. I paid $42 for two plates of breakfast you see in the pictures and an orange juice. Nothing out of the ordinary for such a expensive experience.
The food was great. They put together some very tasty, yet unusual combinations. Loved it.
Pleasant and we'll presented food. A little over priced, otherwise I would rate it 5 stars
lemonade fries
Make no mistake, this is a real breakfast joint with great coffee and espresso run by the hippest of the hipsters. The service is great but come early unless you like to wait.
The bread tastes pretty much like in France. The TFB salad was awesome.
No eggs anymore at 7 am when they open for breakfast. No longer going to frequent TFB.
Me and my wife came here after she worked a 16 hour shift and it was absolutely delightful. We came for brunch on Sunday, had mimosas, and deliciously simple breakfast that was perfect. Potatoes well seasoned and cooked. Perfect eggs, and thick cut bacon both soft and crispy. The Challah French toast was fluffy and delicious. If you need a brunch spot for simple American breakfast look no further. With a full coffee bar and excellent selection of menu items you won’t be disappointed.
To start off, I love this place. We used to come for breakfast often, because the basic breakfast is another level. From the eggs to the toast, everything was consistently extra delicious. Today’s visit tarnished that love. We (partner and I) haven’t been in at least 6 months since we moved across town, but we were craving it and decided to make the drive. We were seated pretty quickly, ordered our drinks and food at the same time. What we ordered: 2 sides of eggs, 1 side of bacon, 1 side of toast, 1 side of potatoes, and 1 croissant (the actual plates are too big for us to finish). She read the order back quickly, then she was off. Our food was taking awhile, we heard our server tell the table next to us that the kitchen was ambushed with orders and offered them pastries. She still hadn’t come up to us since our drinks. 35 minutes after we ordered, someone else dropped our food off. We received: 1 side of eggs, 2 sides of toast, and 1 side of bacon. With that many plates missing I assumed the rest would be coming out, so we began eating our sides. Our server never came to check in after the food got dropped off, we finished our sides pretty quickly and were looking around lost and confused. Our server came to grab our plates, I was waiting for her to tell the rest would be out soon, instead she said she’d grab the check. I was speechless, I had just then realized she never put in the rest of our order. I seethed in my seat quietly, too annoyed to talk to her and too annoyed to wait for our missing food. We checked out, left, and ended up stopping for tacos. This isn’t the restaurant we knew and loved, probably could’ve gone through a drive thru for better service. Call us when the old Texas French Bread is back.
The service here is excellent, and the bread is amazing. As soon as I stepped in I was greeted with some fresh bread to try. I told them it was my first time here. It's a very comfy place to relax and have breakfast or lunch. The waiters do care about your service here.
Really impressed! The food was really good. Our eggs were cooked beautifully, and the toast was awesome. The espresso was ok, definitely better than a lot of breakfast places. However, they certainly have a serving issue. I saw many people complain about slow service, and they even forgot my friends coffee. I understand there are rushes, but they're easily predictable, so I would assume you'd have more people on hand to take care of it. Furthermore, I feel that there should be a more streamlined system for orders. It doesn't make sense to have so many orders be forgotten. Overall, I thought the food was very good, but there are just a few issues with serving efficiency!
This place is nothing short of amazing! The folks who manage/own this place are so kind and the bread is really fresh! Highly recommend the breakfast too!
Bakery and deli. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They bake all of their bread and sweets in house. The half and half lunch special is just the right amount of food at a decent price. They have a good selection of vegetarian items. The soups are usually non-vegetarian so I like to order a salad and sandwich.
I'm a big fan of Texas French Bread, and I go here relatively often, living right down the street from it. It's BYOB with a small corking fee, so it's nice having your own selection. The food and coffee are both very good. I've never been here for lunch, so I can only speak on the dinner, but the atmosphere is excellent.
Cute & cozy study spot! Friendly staff & delish pastries!! 10/10 would recommend
The pancakes are literally the size of the plate
why is there high fructose corn syrup in their breads and pastries?? I shouldn't have to check the ingredients at a farmers market or a local restaurant the same way I do at the grocery store. this is terrible. edited: see reply
A great dinner, especially for those who miss being served good bread with dinner. Seasonal, locally sourced veggies and ingredients in a varied menu. Friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
Delicious coffee, and perfectly scrambled eggs
Been waiting for over an hour to be seated for a party of 3. There are 9 opened tables and no one is being seated!!!!
Great bakery and coffee for the morning one of the first places in Austin to have espresso 20-25 years ago.
Five of us went for weekend brunch. Everyone thought it was ok. Pancakes are very thick. So is French toast. No one was unhappy, but no one said "we need to do this again.
TFB was just ok for dinner. I had a really good pasta with homemade noodles and a very good meat sauce. The rest of the meals weren't as good and no one was very impressed. I'd give it another try for lunch, but I'd have to be swayed to go back for dinner unless I planned on getting that exact dish again. I know, not exactly a typical 4-star review, but I did like my food enough to bring the stars up.
Just wonderful. The staff are friendly, caring, and helpful. The french toast can't be complimented enough so make sure to try them and tell them I sent you!
Went in for some bread and it was delicious, the staff was very helpful! I want to come back for dinner/happy hour!
Their burger is truly a unique experience! With sweet tomato jam, arugula, taleggio cheese, and caramelized onions, it's an extraordinary combination of flavors. Will have to admit though, it's not for everyone! My brother wasn't a huge fan.
Texas French Bread is an awesome restaurant that is an Austin original and their cuisine is ver inspired. A family run business, they seek to exceed your expectations and are consistently at the top of their game. My wife and I went recently and were delighted at both the ambiance and the delicious meal we had. Also half-price bottles of wine during happy hour is very nice. I strongly recommend this hidden Austin gem.
Excellent! Everything we ordered was simply good.
One of the best kolaches I've ever had!
arrived at five, it wasn't busy.
Nice atmosphere however you come, very friendly and welcoming staff.
This bakery is a classic Austin favorite in West Campus near UT. The Texas French Bread has a dining area where students and parents alike love to hang out. Delicious and fresh bread abound. Easy street access and ample parking spaces. Be prepared for a weekend brunch crowd as parking can be a challenge.
The decor is relaxing, leaning towards romantic. This establishment nicely bridges the gap between laid-back bakery and elegant place to take someone special for a nice glass of wine. Staff is cordial. Oh yeah, and the food is great!
Very Austin cafe. My biggest two issues are it is very LOUD and quite pricey. $5 for just a side of eggs much less $16 breakfast. In my opinion a very menu. I love keeping Austin weird but I won't be back.
Staff was friendly, quite noisy inside though. Also, wish there was flavoring options for the coffee. Outside seating wasn't too bad except for the mosquitos.
Limited menu; spartan interior; expensive for what you get. Good but not great.
It is still TFB, but nice wine list, beers and an array of food for every taste.
Great food! Ashley is the best!
Great little cafe with a wide selection of food and great staff! The bread it excellent! Will definitely be back again!
Excellent fresh baked cake so chocolateeee and they fresh wonderful aroma when you enter is heavenly
We waited around 40 minutes on a Saturday which was expected. Maybe our hopes were too high, because of the reviews. We waited another 30 minutes for the food, “it looked good”.... but it tasted meh. Omelet was cold and flavorless, potatoes were good though. Latte was good as well. In my opinion it wasn’t worth the wait nor the $45 brunch for two.
Great food bread was fantastic
First, I'll start off with the positives which will be awfully quick. The interior of the place is beautiful. I love the tall windows and the wooden ceilings. It makes the room feel open. Anyways, my wife and I went there earlier this week. For the prices, the food is absolutely NOT worth it. The only reason I went there was because my wife's birthday was on Monday and we had always passed by the restaurant while riding around that area. It's our favorite thing to do when we have time to ourselves away from the kids. I ordered the cheeseburger and my wife ordered the beef tartar(I think that's what it was called). The meat on both plates was barely cooked. I asked for my burger to be cooked WELL done. It still had a lot of pink in it. When I asked the young lady who waited our table if she could send it back to the kitchen, she asked if I wanted a cookie or some bread. In my head I was thinking "A cookie?? No I want my burger cooked right" I told her no. We had a staring match until I just went ahead and told her it was fine. That was probably my fault. My wife told me her plate was decent. Not great, but decent. I didn't want to complain because it was my wife's birthday but I just wish her birthday went a lot better than it did. Needless to say, we left without eating dessert.
I went there with family on a Saturday for brunch not knowing what to expect, but the banana pancakes I had were really-REALLY good and huge. Even though their menu is a bit limited, we agreed that this place left our bellies beyond satisfied. Great customer service as well!
The food was fresh and delicious. The staff was friendly and very helpful.
I went for brunch on a Sunday with the family and found the place a bit noisy from all the talking when we first arrived but after sitting down it didn’t bother me at all. I had some French toast, soup, coffee, and a mimosa!
This is an Austin place. The food is great and the service is nice, but a little weird. The building is something... and really gives the impression of being in an old bakery. I have never been disappointed in the food; it is always great. It can be pricey, but so is everything else in that part of town. Go eat, enjoy a walk around campus and grab a cup of coffee on the drag... That is a Saturday afternoon... I have kids now, so this never happens. Maybe one day I can show them too!
Great bread, cookies, sandwiches. They also serve breakfasts now, really good.
Great as usual, a little pricey, food was exceptional, ambiance soothing.
Excellent! Food was fantastic. Staff was helpful and nice. Parking is difficult especially around peak times. I recommend the Challah French test.
Texas French Bread has outdoor seating at a very pleasant patio across the parking lot from the main building. Also a beautiful place for special events.
I love this place! All the food is amazing and it's super cute inside.
Great pancakes. Service was not exactly speedy, but it's a nice place to relax, enjoy a coffee or iced tea and relax.
The Grand Marnier French Toast is a must and the lunch special is a real bargain. Parking in the back, top notch food and service. I wish that I had tried it years ago and I'm already planning my next visit.
A star for ambiance, another star for the bread and a decent croissant. The cappuccino I received was not good (very little foam). The cantaloupe had a faint taste of lox. So no stars for value/quality there. Unfortunately, the service was also subpar. I asked a couple of questions about the pastry offerings behind the counter (if there is a menu describing the selection, it was not offered to me) and the person behind the counter was not very helpful. After having tried a loaf of bread from here before, I thought the restaurant experience would be much better.
Their bread was a bit hard, although their chicken was well seasoned it was also raw on the inside. The ambviance was nice. My server was a bright young gentleman and he was veey fast and kind. We were served and seated quickly. It was also a but expensive though if you are older or on a date I am sure this would be fine for you.
Such a very nice restaurant to get breakfast. Great atmosphere and the food is delicious.
Super savory. This place has a cool atmosphere.
Soooo awesome! They have the BEST Banana Walnut Pancakes! And, they finally got their staffing issues ironed out, they are fast and delicious. Oh, and their coffee is the "bomb"...to quote my kids.
Great food with a relaxing setup, great for grabbing a late brunch with the family.
My husband and I visited this place last night. He ordered the fried chicken with slaw and the fried chicken was severely over cooked and came out late. I ordered the tagliatelle with shrimp which was very watery and bland. My husband’s meal was not worth $22 or should I say $28 because they overcharged us. My meal was $20, and was not worth the money either. On top of that, the manager chose to speak to every table around us but did not take the time to ask us how we were or how our food tasted. I would never recommend this restaraunt. I wanted to like it, but it left a sour taste in our mouths.
If you want mustard on your sandwich better bring your own - all they have is honey mustard. It tasted a little odd on my BLT. Edit: Dijon would have been lovely! I'll make sure to specify next time.
Cute little place with amazing french toast
Service levels were superb. Friendly and frequent checks to see how we were doing.
Great food
