Food was ok but service, ambiance was mediocre. I had informed the restaurant that I am here to celebrate a special function but the restaurant didn't do anything to make my family feel special. Will not return.
One of the best wood fired pizza I have had.
Great food good ambience good service
Great food, great service!
Great food and service. Tried many of the small plates and all were tasty. Atmosphere was a little loud for me.
Delicious food, aesthetic interior, great service, but the food was a bit pricey and came in small portions.
Italian food, mmm, super delicious. got there near five, it wasn't very busy. nothing but great experiences here.
The ambiance and setting were amazing! We had very good service too.. food was just ok.
The food wasn’t special... or exciting...or good... The service was extremely slow on a weekday... so there definitely wasn’t a rush! Lol the staff was so slow and unorganized that we got our silverware after we got our food. Shall I eat my pasta with my hands?
Dropped in on Tues. It has a nice interior. Menu is like a cafe in Boston I liked.
Absolutely divine! Great food and wonderful atmosphere!
Great service! The pasta was a little spicy and nobody told us. And the desert was great, they have small tiramissu
I literally can't say enough good things! Let's just say I drive 45 minutes out of my way to come eat here. The atmosphere is great, and the food is amazing. Just go for yourself, and find out. You won't regret it!
Good food. Able to get in and out of quickly if time is a factor.
Great atmosphere and options
Great Italian old fashioned and flavors of the salmon plate!
The service was OK. Not great, not bad. Of course we had the Landry's dining card membership pushed on us which we kindly declined. The food was just OK. And for the premium price, disappointing. The snapper seemed precooked and a bit on the dry side. The ambience is nice but a bit disingenuous. The peach belini was very good, however. There is little choice of restaurants within walking distance from the convention center and the Marriott hotel accross the street. If you can drive or ride share, I advise leaving the area if you are in search of food. There are plenty of excellent restaurants a very short drive from here.
Wifey and I were craving Italian on ourr honeymoon in St Thomas. As soon as we landed in the states we had to find some. Grotto was absolutely what we needed to get our fix. Everything was eaten ruthlessly and it was all delicious. So spot on. Tons of local beer to choose from as well. Service was great too!
Need to go to the one on Westimer for a MUCH better experience and selection
Best place to eat in downtown Houston.. happening place to eat and drink.. decent crowd and hospitality.. the staff is very professional and well trained.. quick service good music
Yums! I’ve lived downtown Houston for five years and never ventured out to Grotto. But now that I know .... now sure how long they’ve been there but it’s definitely on the list now! They have this tomato basil soup shooter with grilled cheese that is insane! The location is perfect, right off the rail and bus lines including the free Greenlink. The hostess wasn’t particularly helpful but she may have been having an off day. Overall, go!!
I have dined here many times. The food is consistent and always good. I had the shrimp piatto today and it was fantastic. The location is great. It is across from the Marriott Marquis, in the GRB and across from discovery green, so there is always things to do an see close by.
This is a great place to go for small plates. It is more of a tapas style, but still has the Grotto staples. Great place for drinks and apps after work. This is my 4th time to visit the location and I will say that the service was mediocre tonight, but is usually very good.
Great location (right inside the convention center). Their menu was intimidating at first, but their starters are perfect for lunch! The panini shooters were delicious. The skewers with fries, along with their pizzas with the crispy crust was tasty! Great outside seating.
I was part of a party of 12 people who were here during a convention. The waiter was fabulous in handling all of our food from the appetizers to the dinner to the desserts without a mistake. The ribeye steak was very tasty and tender. One thing that impressed me was that the waiter said they could prepare my steak lactose free without me having to give directions. Everyone was very pleased with the overall experience and we highly encourage others to eat here.
Amazing.. Great Environment. Great Food.. Great Drinks
Southern twist on italian. Food was great, very flavorful. Desert was
Service was slow. Waiter never checked back with us after food came out.executive chef making pizza was very friendly. Busy night with astros and carrie underwood, but they were not on top of their game. We will not be returning.
got there near seven, it wasn't very crowded. the service was sociable and attentive. the place has a cool atmosphere.
Food, service, ambience, everything was top notch. Will eat here more often.
Very busy and LOUD. Good food though
Sad to say this place was bland and the amount of money you spend to the amount of food you actually get is quiet ridiculous, service Sucks, my husband ordered red snapper and got literally just that a cut in half fish with no Sides or anything. Won’t be coming here again.
Great service, and great food. Good selection of wine.
The ambience was great and the food was excellent.
The service was impeccable - prompt, nonintrusive, and always pleasant. The portion sizes are not huge but are quite sufficient. All preparations were well executed. The tables are a bit tight for a party larger than 2. While it can be a budget-friendly experience, expect to pay more than the "$$" listed on the Google information.
Super good calamary, i had couple others tapas and they were all good too
The food and service was amazing!
Great place for a quick bite to eat! Great menu options with great atmosphere!
Great food, i had the salmon and fresh vegetable salad, and it was delicious! Service was just ok... our waiter was fairly absent, and everyone in my party was a little upset by the automatic gratuity added to our bills because nowhere on the menu did they mention an auto gratuity for parties of a certain number or above.
Wonderful pizza and rose'. Fine service for lunch.
Fantastic tapas, excellent entrees, incredible service. All of the fish entrees have been wonderful. Though I've not had the desserts, my colleagues were in heaven with their dessert choices. Highly recommend reservations in advance.
Absolutely amazing! The food was so delicious. My boyfriend and I came for the first time, and they provided excellent service. Our server was Megan and she was so kind and fun! Explained the menu and continuously made sure everything was good. The food justifies the prices. Definitely recommend and will come back.
Short rib gnocchi dish is incredible. Best I can remember. Excellent service (thanks Tony). Lovely place.
Everyone was extra polite, very informative and helpful.I just ordered a burger and fried potato(very tasty)
Had a private function with approx 35 ppl. Private room is large and comfortable with nice views. Good service with full bar.
This is a great dining experience. There is a lot to choose from and everything we tried was excellent. I highly recommend the Chef's Board to start your meal. This isn't an everyday kind of place as it is a little on the expensive side, but it does make a special occasion that much more memorable.
Excellent service, atmosphere, and food. Had a group of 6 people and we had a great time eating some small plate items and entrees. Great experience all around.
The Grotto is in a great location and has a really hip and comfortable atmosphere. The wine and drinks are good; but my dishes, though presented creatively, were not as impressive. The snapper in particular was the worst I can recall. Either grossly overcooked or likely frozen for too long; the snapper had a leather texture and was too salty. Unfortunate because the wait staff was efficient and friendly. Spare the staff, fire the chef!
Great gastropub. Super convenient, right next to the convention center.
Great pizza, great food overall. Tony is an awesome server with great energy.
Very nice food. Portions might be less so order accordingly. Parking is available nearby and validated by restaurant if the duration of stay is 3 hours or less. Located in a good part of downtown Houston.
Had a good selection of beer and nice small plates to share. Their steamed mussels were good as well as their chopped salad.
Great food, great service!
food and service was good. loud environment. not a real value place. need to be careful walking around the area after dark!
Awesome Italian! Went to the convention center and decided to try it. They say us even without a reservation. The weather was great and we sat outside. Food was excellent though the smaller portion made it possible to have a dessert.
Fantastic ! Usually I write more about a place but fantastic sums it up . Food , drinks , service and ambience is great
Came here for a work lunch with six colleagues. The restaurant is attached to the George R. Brown Convention center is parking is ample (but in an underground garage). The service was quick, polite and expedient. The ambiance of the restaurant is very nice with a "steam punk" vibe. They offer a wide selection of pizza dishes, small dish fares, fish entrees and pasta selections. As well as a two course business lunch (salad and an entree for $16). I'm a sandwich boi myself so, I ordered the Italian Grinder; caramelized onion, calabrian chili aioli, porchetta, Italian pepper relish, arugula and smoked mozzarella on a ciabatta bun. It was delicious. The porchetta, which is an Italian pork roast, was savory, fatty and salty. Everything I'm looking for in a pork roast. My only qualm about the meal was the "serving" of parmesan fries it came with. There were three parmesan potato wedges. Only three. No biggie though, my cholesterol and weight is thankful right now.
well priced and delicious food! perfect for date night or dinner with the family. service was a little slow but our server was still very informative of the dishes.
The meal and environment here lived up to expectations. Upscale yet relaxed, patio seating and delicious food. I especially liked the Salmon. Come get your italian fix, it's worth it!
So I finally went back after my previous visit last month. I went to dine last night with my gf and we enjoyed everything we ate. The food was too pricey, but, it's just ok because they give a high quality food and great customer service. I'm glad I gave them another try. Will definitely be coming back
First time visiting here tonight. It was phenomenal. The food was excellent, and the service superb. Our server tonight was Brenna, and she made for a great experience. From the charcuterie board through the dessert, we had not one thing to criticize. Brenna took the time to thoroughly explain their menu, as well as their extensive wine list. We are already looking forward to our next visit. Thank you so much Brenna!
Great Grappa! Delicious food. The staff demanded tip the moment I sat which was very weird but otherwise a great place.
Food was decent, service was slow. Took a long time just to even get drinks. Meals are tiny for the price. I mean ordering $10 for meatballs and you only get 4, seriously??? They aren't that big, they fit into shot glasses. When my wife and I got the food we both asked "where is the rest?"
Love this place. Chef board rocks! The staff is always great
I love coming here for dinner with my husband. The pasta is home made and to die for. The food would not mean anything without the amazing service from Luis who we always request. Thank you and I am waiting for my birthday to come back!
Good ideas, not great on execution. Went here with a couple of colleagues after a day at a conference/show in the convention center. Friends had highly recommended. Some things were good - some sort of like risotto bites, chopped salad and a lobster bisque and a lovely tomato basil soup that had complex flavors and a bit of texture from tiny toast pieces and crunchy garlic bits. Steamed mussels, good Others not so much. One of the diners ordered a dish of roasted cauliflower and small peppers. She specifically asked about whether the peppers were spicy (she did not want, server said mostly they weren't) and when the dish came, it was mostly the small roasted peppers, not super spicy, but too spicy. And there was scarcely any cauliflower. in there. However it was nicely roasted. The diner informed the server who was uninterested. I ordered the roasted cauliflower salad that had listed greens, red onions, white beans and some other stuff. I wanted the beans to add some protein to a vegan dish. The salad I got had no beans at all and cauliflower that was perhaps lightly steamed and had never seen the inside of an oven. I discussed with the server, who explained that they were out of white beans. He took the bowl back to the kitchen. When he brought it back it had the same kind of unroasted cauliflower and a few red beans. Not great. Could have been. We tried dessert - a caramel custard tiny taste was good. A dozen small brioche donut holes were kinda greasy but came with yummy, fun dipping sauces: chocolate, raspberry, and lemon curd. The food wasn't that bad, but it could have been oh, so much better. And I was very disappointed at the indifference of our server.
My friend and I ate dinner here on the 25th of july 2019.he had the trout i had pasta.THE FOOD,SERVICE,AND ENVIRONMENT WAS AWESOME! It was so good I cam back for lunch the next day.. by the way the pizza for lunch was fantastic. Then my friend and I ate dinner there our waiter Richard was attentive and knowledgeable of the menu he to was very friendly.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND EATING HERE!!
The Cavatelli was awesome. Filled me up. Let me get some more money. I'm returning. My waitress was was very attentive nice and helpful.
Great place for brunch before an Astros game
What a great find! I highly recommend their small plates. I wanted to try so many of them but settled on three and that was more than enough. The fried artichokes were delicious and reminded me of Rome while the gnocchi was scrumptious. Love the vibe and design of this place and would definitely come back again while in Houston.
Service and food was great!
The best Italian food all over Houston... Thank u
The service was very kind and attentive. Prices were fair for the quality of the food. Like a restaurant in Washington I loved.
Fantastic Italian restaurant. Went three times, the Veal, pizza, and gnocchi was amazing. Highly recommend during convention season!
Awesome place. Delicious food. Please order the tomato
Im picky with my gnocchi, I'm always comparing Italian food to my mum's home made. But their gnocchi was excellent, served with pulled rib meat. Great atmosphete too, only downside is it's a little pricey.
The waitstaff were all very professional and prompt. Obviously very skilled and well trained. Had two managers check on us during our visit. Great food. Many great beverage and specialty drink choices. Our server Meghan was excellent.
Great atmosphere and really good food. The chef's board has a great mix of cheeses and cold cuts. Great to share between two for a light dinner.
To start, the girls were lovely at the hostess stand. Our waiter Andres was patient, knowledgeable and expedited the food in a timely manner(heading to a concert). And, the food was excellent
New to town. Great location right by minute maid park. Great cocktails. Forgot the name, but my wife ordered what was essentially an Italian margarita. It was delicious and highly recommend it. We ordered the meet and cheese board. If your party is less than 4, go with the option for 3 meat and cheese in any combination. Very good.
This place poses as a fancy dining experience but all you should expect is high prices for very small bland, cold portions of food that you get served with nasty customer service. I do not recommend.
Average food at best. Valet attendant warranted the 3 stars. He was exceptional!
Nice atmosphere and food. If you have a quick lunch meeting, this is a great choice.
Great food and appetizers. Huge selection of great wines.
I could say so much of this place. The food was amazing. I am a very critical of my whiskey drinks, this place hands down, has the best whiskey sour to ever touch my lips. I'd go back just for that. Service was excellent. Its expensive, but so worth it.
Good atmosphere, great service, food was fresh and tasty. Good deserts.
A favorite evening place of mine. Looking forward to returning with my relatives. This place has a great feel to it. Food is similar to a place in San Francisco I loved.
Great place to eat and have a drink before heading to the game.
Very good. Nice atmosphere and good food.
I only had a beer. Nice look. It's attached to the convention center so it's convenient.
Really fun place to have an event. I was here for the purim party Saturday night. Nice outdoor space, food, and drinks. There was never a slow in service and the pretzel bread was super delicious.
The Grotto Downtown was a lovely experience. It was very accessible from the tram line, making transportation very easy. The food was all lovely ( Our table ordered The Burger, Meat Lovers Pizza, Skewers, and a Crispy Chicken Sandwich) The service complemented the meal splendidly. Seth was an excellent waiter and he made our experience even better. Overall, if you are looking for a very trendy spot to eat with excellent food, great decor, and superb service, The Grotto Downtown is the place for you!!
The burger off of the lunch menu was amazing! Meatballs and calamari appetizers were great as well
Great menu and really good service
Beautiful environment!! Delicious food
Excellent food and service. Great happy hour specials. Loved it.
The first time I ate here it was amazing. The next time it was lousy and they complained about a 50$ tip!
Disappointed at this place... the food is definitely sub par and prices are over inflated!
Quickly seated without a reservation at a peak hour. Server was prompt and personable. Our food came quickly and was excellent. Anesthetics were pleasing. Can't ask for a better experience
Food and service was good, our only complaint was speed of food delivery. While it took awhile for our food to arrive after ordering (it was not busy) - we don't mind waiting for good food (it was good). When our order arrived, we determined we were short an order of fries (we assumed it was simply missed, no big deal). We asked them for an additional order of fries, it was finally delivered - after we had all finished our meal. In addition, we ordered a couple of meals to go (at our initial ordering) - after the conclusion of our meal we had to wait for those meals for another 30mins - and then it wasn't packed for to go. The staff member (not our waiter) seemed not happy when we asked for it to be packed for to go. Other than that the place was nice, food was good. We will go back (but have plenty of time for slow food).
The atmosphere was friendly. I love the pizza. It was a nice place to hang out
Walked in off of the street after the Astros game and were seated immediately. Wait staff was excellent and food was great but in smallish portions.
While staying at the Marriott Marquis, my family had dinner at Grotto Downtown before heading over to BBVA Stadium for a Houston Dynamo game. We did not have reservations, and we're immediately seated. Our waiter was great. Never was their an empty glass, and the food came out fast. My wife and son split snapper covered with lump crab, my daughter had Bolognese, and I enjoyed a small plate of meat balls. This was our first experience at Grotto Downtown, and we've had dinner at Grotto in The Woodlands. Very different atmosphere downtown with a cool, casual vibe. Overall, we were very pleased with our experience.
Great Food at a even better price! Got us ready for the Astros game...
Just do it. Great ambiance. The food is fresh and unique. Wait staff and bar staff know how to do their jobs and they earn their tips. Try this joint for some dishes you haven't had in a while and for a great evening with some atmosphere. Prices were somewhat high, but not insane. I highly enjoyed and would go back.
Atmosphere, food and service was top notch. Hope they come to oklahome
The service here is amazing! Absolutely recommend the risotto and tiramisu. We had a shrimp dish for an appetizer but I can’t recall the name of it.
Great service by Alex and good food!
