REVIEWS OF Skogen Kitchen IN South Dakota

Brian Lund

Five stars for everything. Period. Breakfast, unusual and spectacular. Evening meal, very high class ($13-50 range. Expect that, and expect to be dazzled). Fantastic staff as well. Only gripe-more noise attenuation please as it is quite noisy.

Kāwika Kolomona Kamake'e'āina

Great little place that was recommended to us. We went on a Sunday but didn't realize we needed reservations. However, we were accommodated on the small outdoor patio which had heaters for each table and blankets for guests, it was charming and perfect. The food was great as well, especially the sausage and bacon.

Patti Ketelsen

Very unique menu but something for everyone. Service was excellent and food was even better! Highly recommend.

Katie Howard

They are always willing to work with food allergies and sensitivities which is incredibly appreciated when you have several. I've never had a bad experience there. Food is always fresh and amazing and the staff is awesome. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting a special dinner out.

Kelly Vorachek

Excellent breakfast, homemade and prepared superbly! Staff was wonderful caring. Definitely a hidden jewel in the Black Hills. Also consider a reservation

Anna Bourreza

Incredible food, make sure you have a reservation.

Janet Rementer

One of the absolute meals I've ever had and I'm from the north east. The scallops were perfect! Desserts were a special treat.

Ashley Bernard

Fabulous food and fabulous service. By far some of the best in all the hills.

Rebecca Morand

We stopped in for breakfast and found so many good options on the menu it was hard to decide what to get, but everything we had was delicious! Staff was very friendly and highly attentive (so much so, when they realized it was my birthday they surprised me with a delicious treat). We would highly recommend this place to anyone in the area.

Steve Dorsey

Ate breakfast one day and dinner tonight so we could sample both menu's. I had the walleye for breakfast and was so impressed we made reservations for Sunday morning on our way back home. The ribeye for dinner was very good. Served on a small cloud(very fluffy) of resotto and ringed by a delicious dark gravy/sauce that was not to salty. (Most gravy's have to much salt in them for my taste) Our waiters were very warm and friendly. (Cora and Anton)

Dane Goetz

Great atmosphere, attentive and knowledgeable staff, delicious food!

jim Ingram

We left Florida pulling our trailer 3 months ago and this was one of the top meals we have eaten out. The restaurant is small so call and make a reservation. Make sure you make time to eat here.

scott buchtel

I had the ribeye....it was tender and needed no seasoning. It came with a delicious tomato/pepper sauce which was delectable. The egg ravioli was amazing and the Brussels sprouts were off the chain. (That means good) The desserts are amazing as well, though the salted caramel was my personal favorite. I would recommend this place to anyone who happens to be in Custer

tanya knutson

This breakfast "took me to church" !!! The best quiche Lorraine I've ever had in my life...every.single.bite. was perfection.... Surprise, breakfast was an "Experience"

Jordan Evans

Perfect food for fair prices!

Darren Dahlberg

Loved everything about this place. Great food and great service. Highly recommend.

Guitarman Guitarman

Well conceived and well executed food. Service was very good and very kind.

Tucker Johnson

We stumbled into this place on a long road trip with our toddler. We were all exhausted from the drive that day, especially the little one. She was restless and wanting to play after being in the car all day. The staff were so kind and helpful in entertaining her with crayons and even offering to give her a tour of the kitchen. I’ve never had restaurant staff treat us, complete strangers, like family the way they did. It was so much more than a dining experience. Oh and the food was outstanding.

Kerrie Lambert

The food was out of this world! I wish we weren't just passing through - - We'd be back for dinner! The service was outstanding. Everyone was so attentive and nice!

Steve B

Loved this place. Owner Eliza Raney made us feel at home when we stopped in on a busy, rainy June morning on a motorcycle trip. Well-made dishes that have a personal flair. I hope they stay around for a long time. We will be back!

Susan Jordan

Delicious Walleye. Good coffee. They even have a punch card.

Alexis Tassone

I've traveled to 47 states to see the sights and taste local foods. This is by far one of the best restaurants I have been to. The peppers and ravioli were as phenomenal as the staff. Thanks for the great experience!

Laura Troastle

So delicious. The staff was very polite. But you really should call for reservations. Worth the trip!

Christina Olson

Amazing food, amazing service, one of the best places in the Black Hills!

Maggie Fischer

I am in Custer almost evey year and this was my first time at Skogen Kitchen. The restaurant is quaint. The staff was friendly. The food is top notch. I will be back as I return to Custer. Lovely visit.

Chris Hornick

Great experience. Get the Moroccan chicken chicken. Sit by the cooks counter - super fun! A true treat.

Robert Lentsch

Small space, really well done. Great staff, and the best breakfast I have ever tasted. They are new and I really hope they do well as I plan to stop every time I hit Custer. The Walleye breakfast was truly wonderful.

Drew Beaton

Best restaurant in the Black Hills.

Chris R

This place is a diamond. The absolute best, as in hands down best restaurant that I have ever been to. I have traveled around the world and love eating and cooking, so I have been to a lot of five star places with the big names in the culinary world on the sign, and this place is above all of them. The restaurant is small, and dining is by reservation, so plan ahead, but you see your food being prepared and you have the opportunity to meet the genius chef Joseph and his wife Eliza. Both are very humble and very friendly. On one hand I dont want to tell anyone about Skogen so that I can keep the secret to myself and be selfish, but on the other hand I know it would be wrong to not share this wonderful gem with everyone else because they deserve all of the success that is in their future. From the appetizers to the desserts the flavor combinations are magical. We got the fois gras as an appetizer and immediately knew that we were in for a meal of epic proportions. We had a party of four, along with my two young children, and we all tasted each others meals, I ordered the Szechuan Walleye, and my initial thought was that the Szechuan flavors were going to overtake the mild flavors of the Walleye, I was dead wrong, never before had anyone been able to mellow down the strength of Szechuan and create such a delicious flavor profile to me than Chef Joseph. My wife and father had the suckling pig and once again the flavors showed the time, effort and creativity behind the dish. My mom ordered the ribs, and the tenderness and flavor were astounding. After dinner we had to indulge in dessert, three chocolate lava cakes with homemade ice cream and a salted caramel..........perfection doesn't even come close to being accurate. The staff were very friendly and obviously loved working at this amazing place. Thank you Chef Joseph, Eliza, and your staff at Skogen for an absolutely unforgettable experience that we all can't wait to do again!!!!

Blake Wade

Best breakfast of all time anywhere. French toast with green tea icecream?! SEE YA, and those garlic potatoes are pure magic. I hear the dinner is fantastic too.

Kelly Bowers

Found this little gem as we were leaving the Black Hills. Great place for a unique breakfast experience. Not your typical eggs and bacon restaurant. The food was excellent and the staff were friendly. Highly recommend.

Stephen Boateng

Excellent food! I was there with my wife, two kids, my brother and his wife. We shared the Japanese french toast, Lianni and Robert pancakes for starters, then each of us ordered a meal - I had Custer's first meal. The food was delicious. The restaurant itself was quite cosmopolitan, yet family friendly. I lived in Chicago for 6 years (I happen to think Chicago has some of the best restaurants anywhere) and this was amongst the best Restaurants I've been to. I recommend calling ahead to reserve.

Family Lipshultz

If you are anywhere near this restaurant GO! We were in South Dakota to see Mt. Rushmore and our son found this little gem. We were able to get a same day reservation & we had a truly memorable meal. We live in Northern VA an area loaded with great eating places — the food is outstanding — everything from the appetizers, to the main dishes and desserts — nothing was a disappointment! This ranks up there with any top restaurant in any city in the world. Also lovely service, great ambiance — we would come back to SD just to go here again :)

Erin Woodyard

We LOVED our breakfast so much we had to return the next day to try dinner. We were equally impressed. Charming atmosphere and food was absolutely delicious. A must stop if you are in the area. YUM!

Nick Williamson

Awesome staff very friendly. Try the sea scallops. The menu changes seosonally

Amy Tadlock

Excellent food and super kind waitstaff. It's a very fancy place for the area. Definitely recommend the bottomless mimosas for only $10!

Ginny Herman

Dearest Skogen, You have stolen my heart! Thief! I cry as my taste buds dance with the delights of local libation love. My spirit is unhinged as we surrender to the experience that is Skogen. Balanced, bright, bold, beautiful. I leave with nothing left to desire than to return.

Paul Lambert

Fantastic service! Delightful atmosphere! Delicious food! Would give a 10 if I could.

Barbara Bettelyoun

Sensational tasting journey! We enjoyed every bite, the wait staff was.friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Definitely a surprise gem to find in Custer!

Nathan Mitchener

Fantastic restaurant. Great and hospitable servers. Perfect atmosphere even on a dreary morning. Their strawberry jam and cheese are both made here locally, so have this toast. Coffee is also delicious!

Robert Neiers

Gourmet dining in the Black Hills area! Joseph and Eliza are both wonderful hosts with the finest restaurant in the entire region.

Xavier Palmer

Simply amazing. The Salmon Tacos were outstanding (the honey really made it) and the homemade raviolis were absolutely delicious. The waiter was great and good conversation. The chef even gave us a complimentary dessert after we told the maitre d' that the crab appetizer, while still very good, could have been better (dont know if the two are related). Speaking of the desserts, all outstanding. The salty caramel pudding was a perfect mix of flavors and textures. If you're in the Black Hills, Skogen Kitchen is 100% worth the visit.

Taarna Deane

Delicious food, large portions, and top-notch customer service. It has a hip vibe and is cutely decorated as well. Would definitely recommend!

Black Hills Tour Company

Just seeing the name Skogan Kitchen makes my mouth water...need I say more?! This place is my number one recommended spot in the Black Hills and believe me I am asked about daily. There's a certain level of love and care in the food here and service that elevates Skogan above the rest and is truly the nicest dining experience in our region that rivals the very best in the major urban areas.

Connor Carlbom

Probably the best food you will find in the Hills, and some of the best service too! Always willing to make the drive from Rapid to get my Skogen fix.

Jennifer Barnes

This restaurant is truly amazing! The owners, Joseph and Eliza, were delightful, as was our waiter Curtis. The food was superb in taste and presentation. Everyone was extremely friendly and kind. Fully enjoyed our mouth watering meals and delectable desserts. Enjoyed a wonderful evening together. Highly recommend this if you're passing through. Be sure to make a reservation as the place is fairly small.

Sheila Schielke

OMG AMAZING!!! I don't know how they make everything so perfect! The food & the staff were fabulous! I'll definitely be going back.

Tyler Tupa

Fantastic food, friendly and articulate servers! Highly recommended, one of the finest restaurants in the hills!

Charley Neff

Skogen Kitchen surpasses it’s small-town setting. The dinner menu is reason enough to visit Custer, SD. Reserve ahead, stay in town, return for breakfast.

Addie Mirren

One of the best breakfasts I have ever had. The potatoes were the best potatoes I have ever had! Do yourself a flavor and get Custers Last Meal. Everyone was very attentive to our needs during the meal and made us feel like we were the only ones there. Will definitely drive across the country for this dining experience again!

Dustin Bartlett

Easily the best food in Custer. The Quiche Lorraine is the best quiche I've ever had, and the morning walleye is the best breakfast I've ever had. Like, best breakfast of all breakfasts. But it's all good - the breakfasts, dinners, and desserts. Only drawback is that it's very popular and limited seating, so you'll need a reservation during the summer tourist season. Also limited parking.

Teresa Schneider

The food was delicious. The atmosphere was great and the owners and staff are very friendly and attentive. Don't forget to try the dessert. Everything was wonderful. We can't wait to go back again. Thank you for a perfect night out.

Sean Nolan

The food was fresh and artfully prepared. The crispy fish tacos were the best. Carrot soup was divine. So good that we returned for breakfast the next day. A great spot for locals and travelers. Hopefully AAA wil discover this place and make it a recommended stop.

Matt Fridell

Skogen is one of those places that we locals wish all you visitors didn't know about so we could get in now and then during the summer. The food is so good you will change your address to be near it. The atmosphere is . . . well, you might never notice the food is so good, but it is great too! Attentive to the food, your special needs, and your experience - the chef and staff do it right. This is the kind of place that gets Netflix specials made about it.

Scott Rydwell

A great little place. We had breakfast and the seats filled up quickly. Friendly service and delicious, unique food items. I hope the owners are successful. They're doing a great job

Drew Purdy

Absolutely wonderful cuisine. The appetizer special was foie grams which I actually developed goose bumps with. The pork dinner was like nothing I've ended had. Overall a wonderful experience. 5 starts. Will be coming back again for sure!

Adam Grau

Service was horrible. It was sunday morning and packed (place is small so it's not like theres that many people). Waitress took order and disappeared for 45 minutes until our two orders came. Hostess asked us to move over to make room for two more guests, there was plenty of room already. Those people got their orders quickly and were even able to get their drinks refilled. Waitress asked where we were from when she brought the bill. Don't come when its busy, food was pretty good otherwise.

Erin Hayward

Amazing! The menu is so creative, and everything we tried was wonderful. We went for our anniversary dinner, and before even leaving the restaurant, we made reservations for breakfast that weekend! The service is great, too! Just perfect.

Tim and Camie Sleeman

Great food options!

Steven Coultrap

Everything we had was amazing. I would highly recommend it. Several tables around us we making reservations for for other nights while at the table.

Chuck Piotrowski

Fantastic. Good for kids, but the kids menu is not inspired. The regular menu was creative and varied drawing from regional and wider afar.

Levi Young

Personable, family run and amazing food! This is the place you wish you had found the first day so you could eat here more than once. You will not be disappointed.

Tom Schmidt

We had a lot of fun at Skogen. Food was so innovative and fresh. A hidden gem! Go here and enjoy the work of an artist and the passion of the team that helps to make the whole experience.

Savannah Humphrey

WOW! I wish we had a Skogen Kitchen in Denver!!! I can't wait to visit Mt. Rushmore again, so I can go back!!! My Eggs Benedict breakfast was rich and savory, and the avocado toast was bright and light. More importantly, everyone on the staff was super friendly, and took a moment to chat with us, making us feel right at home!

Danielle Currier

So, so good! I was skeptical of walleye for breakfast but decided I had to try it. It was amazing!!! Very friendly staff and great decor! Can’t say enough good things about it!

Greg Howard

Very good food, service was no e and the owner extremely friendly....would recommend this establishment to family and friends

Debbie Donaghue

Intimate, friendly, and very good food. Eggs were cooked the way we ordered them! The pancakes were just right too. Lingonberries are so much better than blueberries. We ate there 2 mornings in a row while we stayed in Custer, SD.

babette seidel

The food is absolutely amazing! It is presented is a beautiful manner and is the best we have ever tasted. The walleye breakfast is incredible! Please take the time to stop here, it is well worth it!

Tim Wegner

Elizabeth Miller

Excellent food. My family loved every dish. Very creative and delicious.

Becca Lee

I sat at the counter and had appetizers. Nice interaction with owner and waiter very knowledgeable. Excellent food and nice wine list...I wasn't expecting this in Custer in the winter tirme

Michael Cummings

Who woulda thunk it in Custer SD but this was a wonderful evening. Warm welcome and they handled our coats. First five star. We were seated at the small six seat communal table. Another five star. Then Tom, our server recommended an excellent bottle of wine. Our appetizers were terrific, especially the stuffed piquillo peppers. Five stars again. And on and on. Can't say enough good things about this delightful little restaurant in a sea of overt touristic enterprises. Our evening was enthusiastically terrific, in part because of our engaging tablemates.

Juliet Schmidt

Simply the best breakfast and I'm very hard to impress. Ma and Paul today. Best sweet and savory I've ever had. I highly recommend the quiche as well. Truly everything I've tasted in 4 visits had been exceptional! Well done!

Katie Smirnova

Delicious food, always great service, and super nice staff!

Eliza Chu

Upscale dining minus the pretense. It's a small space and there's a strong, local following so reservations are essential.

Jan Joroff

A hidden gem in Custer,S.D. Some of the best Hamachi Sashimi I have ever had and the best lamb andouille sausage I have ever eaten. A must stop if you are in the area.

Heather Lundy

Absolutely loved this place. The food was amazing.

Darrin Foell

We stopped for breakfast based on positive reviews, and we were genuinely impressed. We found a wonderful atmosphere with friendly, attentive and helpful staff serving outstanding food. They offer traditional breakfast options with slight variations to make them positively delicious. They also offer some non-traditional options that are definitely worth a try. The menu is not huge, which means that what they do offer is prepared perfectly.

Suzann Stoner-Wyngaarden

As you walk through the door of this wonderful and unique new restaurant in Custer.. you are initially bombarded with the aroma of tastes yet to come.. as we took our seats at the chef's table we were able to watch the symphony of Chef Joseph and his associates performing magic in his kitchen.. every plate that was prepared was done with love and appreciation for each ingredient that was placed on the plate.. being able to watch the devotion that each person had to this restaurant and to their customers was a treat for all the senses the smell.. the taste.. the visual beauty of each plate that left Joseph's kitchen revolved around the experience of the individual dinner and the attention to every detail including how every plate was prepared to hand polishing the silver and the glassware to the immaculate kitchen... you may walk in as a customer but you leave as an old treasured friend.. this may have been my first experience but not my last as I could not wait until the next day to enjoy breakfast... this wonderful and unique restaurant will draw you in and bring you back as you feel you were dining with family...

Ronan Summers

You all the way need a reservation for this gem. The English language lacks words for the food...it's pricey, but my goodness. If you're lucky enough to be eating here, be bold. Try something new.

Ryan Dodd

My wife and I were in town for a wedding and were so glad we stumbled upon this place for breakfast! Service was fantastic, everyone working was incredibly pleasant. By far some of the best breakfast food I have had in a long time. Not your tradition eggs, bacon, and pancakes type of restaurant. Very creative, well thought menu. You will will not regret stopping here!

Jennifer Zabinski

Wowza. What a hidden treasure. A taste of the west coast in the Midwest. Fabulous service, with unique and well thought out food. The Japanese French toast with Green tea ice cream and dried seaweed was a unique blend that was an unexpected harmonious paring.

Holly Niemann

Hands down the best food in Custer SD. The owners are absolutely amazing and friendly. The atmosphere is great. All around a wonderful place!!!

Maria george

Amazing food. We loved the deviled Egg. Definitely recommend for those who like little spicy food.

Charissa Johnson

Food was excellent. Enjoyable memory for our 40th anniversary. Eliza and Joseph keep doing it well. Definitely the best in Custer by far.

Maywin Thoreson

The food was amazing and the service excellent. I had the Japanese French toast, and it was to die for!! I would go back in a heartbeat! LOVE this place!!

CK Lo

This little restaurant is mind bogglingly excellent! Chef Raney really knows his flavor combo! Scallop Crudo - Fresh scallops with sugar snap peas, which really bring out the freshness of the whole dish. The acid from the pickled celery and pineapple juice round out the dish perfectly. Bone-in pork chop - accompanied by thai style papaya salad and topped with coconut emulsion. Loved the Asian twists to this classic dish. Pina Cotta - I have never tasted a Panna Cotta I really like... Until this one... The dark chocolate cream is lovingly bitter sweet, but the star of the dish to me is the burned mashmellow cream. Who would have thought bitter on bitter could work so symphonically perfect?! It was an absolutely delight to chat with Eliza throughout the evening. I truly wish Skogen continue it's success! Now only if I could take this restaurant home with me when I leave SD...

Forrest Kundert

Great place. Wonderful food. The food is worth the price. Only caveat is the lava cake we ordered the chocolate absorbed into the cake so it didn’t flow out when we cut into it.

Jacy Glazier

Skogen not only has a beautiful atmosphere and one of a kind service but also amazing food. Expect to love whatever you choose from the menu without adding any other seasonings of your own. Truly a unique restaurant in Custer County that you should visit if you get the chance!

Steve Wood

Beautifull breakfast and service

Caroline Scism

Amazing breakfast/brunch!! They serve breakfast until noon. They don't have gluten free pancakes but they were SO accommodating to my special diet and subbed avocado and even gave me an extra side item to make the plate fuller. It's such a nice atmosphere and the owners are dears!

Melissa Basham

Such a unique and delicious experience!! Eggs Benedict were amazing!

Mike Morgan

Extremely high end restaurant for a small town like Custer. The food is excellent.

Andrea Wilson

There is nothing not to like about this little treasure. Stopped in because of the reviews, and will be back because of the wonderful food. The avocado toast was scrumptious, good to the last lick of the plate. We also had Custer's Last Meal which was also good. Very friendly staff.

Mary Ann Wendland

We travel extensively and enjoy trying new restaurants. This has been a n amazing find. We arrived in Custer on June 7th. We have been to Skogen seven times. Each visit has been a joy. The atmosphere, food, service, and menu are excellent. This is the quality that one would expect in a major city. We have tried most items on the menu and each dish is superlative. Make sure to make reservations because both locals and tourists have discovered how truly fabulous this is!

Cindy Coy

Walked in with our kids 9 & 12 for breakfast and thought not a good kids place BUT we were surprised -- loved the food it was fresh and delicious. The owner came out and greeted us. All were very friendly. My husband asked for some butter and it was amazing!! We would go back.

mickisis1

First rate gourmet dining in the lovely town of Custer. We really enjoyed our 14oz ribeye steak and the steamed buns appetizer was delicious.

Michael caldwell

Amazing food, much needed dining spot in the Black Hills! Chk n pancakes or the Japanese French toast are my go-to for breakfast, don't miss the short ribs for dinner! And the rice pudding is one of the best things I've ever eaten. Keep up the good work

Jim Barnes

J Thomas

Excellent menu choices. The deserts are just right with an after-dinner drink. Service was great, and atmosphere was quite enjoyable.

Jacob Bohlmann

The wild mushroom ravioli was amazing, and a restaurant in this area having truffle is unheard of, even if it was only for a brief time. The razor clams were excellent. Service was just perfect and I'll be returning soon to try something else.

Robert Brown

Awesome food and awesome service. Thanks you.

Karen Garcia

Fabulous restaurant with service you would expect from a restaurant in a much larger city. We stopped for breakfast and Curtis was great at explaining the menu and the food was simply excellent. Highly recommend the Lianna pancakes and Custer's Last Meal, and their sausage and butter are amazing. I would also recommend a reservation as seating is limited, but definitely worth it.

Mickie Pszanka

Exceptional food and service every time!!! Our absolute favorite place to dine in the Black Hills.

Cesar Molina

Service was awesome , Breakfast was great! They promptly accommodated us during busy hours without a fuss ! Will definitely be coming back here next time we are in South Dakota !

Dorothy Davil

The atmosphere was wonderful, as was the service and the food.

Wendy Beaumont

My husband & I found this unique little restaurant this summer. It has become our favorite place to dine! The staff are wonderful, friendly, accommodating and always there to serve us! The chef makes sure everything that leaves his kitchen is perfect! His wife, the hostess is always there to greet & meet all the guests. She makes you feel like you are a special guest each time. The seating is different from most places in this area & at our first visit I wasn't sure I was going to like it but because of the layout of the seating you get the opportunity to visit with other guests. We have met some really nice people & I enjoy the experience of getting to know a complete stranger & feeling like they are a friend when we leave! You would be crazy not to take the opportunity to drive up there & have dinner! We have not tried the breakfast but I can only imagine it is a FABULOUS as the dinner menu! Hope you enjoy!

Tori Conrad

We didn’t expect this type of dining in South Dakota after traveling around the world... just fabulous! Exceeded our expectations! Wonderful flavors, wonderful service, and the cutest and down to earth owners! My entire family, even our three children are floored with the food! Excellent!!!! Steven Daniels

Superb dinner and excellent service. Highly recommended. We have travelled extensively and this restaurant is comparable to the best anywhere!

Matthew Martinez

Amazing find in Custer, SD! It’s small, so make reservations, but it’s worth the extra leg work. Highlights of our meal were the morel risotto daily special, the veal sweetbreads with aji amarilo, the free-range chicken with muhammara and the pork chop with green papaya salad. Plus they have by far the most sophisticated wine list maybe in the whole state. It’s a small list that skews mostly American but there are wines at every price point and definitely some good deals.

Missy Owens

Love, love, love Skogen. Had the Walleye and Double Chocolate Tart. All I can say is amazing! You will not be disappointed. Owners are sweethearts. Glad we are locals and can enjoy Skogen's year round!!!

Marcus Baird

Great restaurant! Tasty food, nice atmosphere, and very friendly service. We didn’t have a reservation and they were able to squeeze us in.

Joel Garcia

Thank you for welcoming us for breakfast this morning! Great atmosphere, nice menu choices and specials, good coffee, and bottomless mimosas were exactly what we needed to start the day off for our anniversary. Thank you, Curtis and the rest of the staff, for the surprise chocolate tart! You can tell we loved it, because it disappeared rapidly.

Rich Schurter

Skogen was recommended to us by a store clerk in Hill City. We drove down the following morning for breakfast and this place is a gem! We got there early so didn't need reservations (please make them for evenings). The staff is outstanding, friendly, attentive but never intrusive and the food was truly amazing. Visiting the Black Hills please do not miss this gem.

Juliet schmidt

Wonderful staff and excellent food

Erin Whitfield

Absolutely delicious! We snagged a reservation for 10:15 with no problem (were driving from about 40 minutes west). We were immediately impressed by the service and decor. It wasn’t too busy when we got there but certainly bustling. The food was some of the best breakfast we’ve had, pretty much ever and absolutely worth the price. Can’t recommend Skogen Kitchen enough!

What an amazing meal we had! We were finishing up our road trip through South Dakota and found this wonderful restaurant! The food was delicious, and that's coming from a picky eater. Our waiter was terrific! I also loved how the friendly owner came by our table and shared information about South Dakota with us.

Yummy. The special (salmon that night) was delicious. The staff was all gracious and the outside seating was fun and friendly.

Came here for dinner spontaneously with my boyfriend’s family on our way back home after our road trip west. We were greeted at the door by a friendly smile and super cute lady, the chef’s wife, who asked if we had a reservation. Since we were not from Custer, we did not know that we should have called for one but even so, our wait was only 30 minutes. She stated that although reservations were not necessary, it certainly helps because the restaurant is small and space is limited. Honestly, she was probably my favorite part of this whole experience. My only complaint is that the waiter waiting on us, spilled my water onto my dinner plate and drowned my salad in an attempt to refill my glass. After doing so, he didn’t apologize. He did offer to get me a new napkin, but he didn’t offer to serve me another salad..... which was super weird. He even walked right over to me to grab my napkin...it was almost as if he tried to ignore the fact that my salad was completely in water, ice cubes and everything. I literally had to ask him for another salad. That was disappointing. Overall, I felt that our experience was pretty good and the food was tasty but pricey. Check the menu before you visit because it’s a one-page menu. It was a very cute place, I would consider visiting again. Ps. I really liked the bathroom and the soap was one of my favorite brands!

Amazing breakfast. I had the spicy fried chicken maple pancakes. Heaven. Be sure to get there when they open, because they fill up fast.

Beyond 5 star. Can anyone say michelin?

A level above other restaurants in the black hills area in terms of quality and attention to detail. My wife also wants me to say that we enjoyed the nice touches on the patio of heat lamps and blankets. One of the better dining experiences we've had.

Small place with very good organic food and very friendly and prompt service

This place is amazing. I frequent restaurants in Chicago, NYC, San Fran, Nashville, Boston, Denver, Scottsdale, etc... This place can totally compete which is crazy since its hidden in Custer, SD. I was totally blown away at the dishes and flavors. Well done!!

Always great food. I'm always impressed with the items on their menu, even if it's as simple as pancakes. They have a solid brand identity and their menu is extremely well developed and balanced. Best restaurant in the Black Hills in my opinion.
