Fantastic burgers. Been eating burgers here since 1952. same location, allways friendly staff.
Best malt ever.. burgers were good also, the only thing that would have made them better is if they toasted the Buns.
Great 50s style Diner. The offer simple menu but the burgers are very good. This place gets quite busy over lunch.
Great tasting burgers that have not changed. Cook them in front of you while you wait. The bakery buns make them. They are always busy.
Place of history and wonderful hamburgers!!! Never change a thing!!
Fun place - great food. It's a diner so expect to sit at the counter.
Love the old fashioned diner feel!
Excellent old fashion style hamburgers. Will definitely be back next time we are in Brookings.
Can't say enough good things about Nick's. Be prepared to wait a bit to sit down, but also be prepared to order at least 3 burgers.
Fantastic burgers. Been eating burgers here since 1952. same location, allways friendly staff.
Nick's is great, burgers are good, but way to pricey for what you get, wish they served fries. The malts/shakes are good too. I would eat there all the time if it were cheaper.
I ordered double burger with cheese, and it was delicious. I would definitely go again
Yummy!
The hamburgers are a bite-sized delight. They don't have fries though.
The food was amazing
Awesome burger an great workers
Best malt ever.. burgers were good also, the only thing that would have made them better is if they toasted the Buns.
Way way over priced and flys all over the food the smallest burger I ever eat
Always a great experience at a fantastic price.
I love coming here... a must stop when we are in town from FL!
A place that was recommended by everyone in town and a must visit. I went back 3 times in the one week that I was there and enjoyed every meal. One of the best standard cheeseburgers I've ever had in my entire life wasn't covered with lots of unnecessary extra toppings just the basics done right. Burgers are a little bit small so you may want to order more than one.
Nick's always serves up great burgers with style!
"World Famous"! A trip to Brookings isn't complete without going to Nick's. burgers are slider sized (2oz). you haven't fully experienced Brookings until you've had Nick's.
Great service and food.
If you are visiting Brookings, I definitely recommend checking out Nick's Hamburgers. It's one of the true historic places left, and has a real vintage vibe to it. The menu is simply burgers, but they are really good. If this review was solely on the food and service, it would be 5 stars. However, the prices for what is essentially a slider are extremely steep. Lastly, the hours of operation are terrible. I do not frequent Nick's often, solely because they have the worst hours of any eatery in town...
Amazing food, recommend the chocolate malt.
Great 50s style Diner. The offer simple menu but the burgers are very good. This place gets quite busy over lunch.
Had to go once and once is enough the atmosphere is great and the wait staff is wonderful food is flavorful but very pricey for what you get.
World Famous Burgers a must stop when in Brookings SD!
Slow small and overpriced. And slow.
Great tasting burgers that have not changed. Cook them in front of you while you wait. The bakery buns make them. They are always busy.
I stop here every time I'm in Brookings. Worth the wait!
Place is bomb I always need to be roller out
This place has been a favorite of mine since I was a little girl! The malts are super thick, and the burgers are extra greasy!!! Be aware that lunchtime, there is usually quite a line out the door!!! But so worth it!
Yummy Nick burgers again and pecan and coconut cream pie for later dessert!
Burgers are delicious......but how much smaller can they make them??
Love the burgers and caramel shakes! It's a small place so you'll probably have to wait for a seat or take them to go. It's worth it!
It's a locals place, which is great, but it's sort of quiet and feels sorta strange eating there. I guess that's how the locals prefer it?? Burgers are very tasty. Splurge the 40 cents to add cheese, it's very tasty. We just moved here and had to check it out, maybe we'll go back when we have some friends so we fit in, better.
Nick's is certainly a Brookings South Dakota land mark. It has been about a decade since our last visit and were looking forward to some Nick's burgers, which we had. We were a bit disappointed as they were not the Nick's our group remembered. Service was friendly and good. Hoping this was just an "off day". Looking forward to our next visit and hoping it is sooner than a decade.
Great burgers. Very limited menu. Why no fies? How can you sell burgers without fries? But it has worked for many many years. Burger patty is lucky if it is 1/8 lb. Toppings are scarcely applied, fried in lard....but they are great! Very cool old -timey vibe to the place. They also have malts and shakes.
Came with a class, but they served us with speed. Burgers are cheap and quality, and they have pie so they have top marks in my book. It's a real neat and good place to stop for lunch.
Very expensive considering how small the hamburgers are, and how average they taste.
Amazing food
Best hamburgers in SD. Hands down
You want a hamburger... well this is it. This is what a hamburger should be. No frills straight up. Hamburger...
Tasty burgers hot and cooked fresh to each customer order. Friendly staff. Or just go for the pies or shakes.
The place is a great throwback to the 50s, but food was disappointing.
Always great!
Best burger I have ever had?
Little burgers, assorted chips, pie, pop, milk, shakes and malts. That's it. Often must wait for a seat, Waited 15 minutes at 3:30 last Saturday! If you want to skip the chain stores, try Nick's.
It was the most amazing Burger I have ever had. The service was amazing. I loved it and would totally go back again.
Love the food and setting if you are not in a hurry. Seven people working. Most walking around. Not many people just before noon rush. Only one on grill and one on toppings. Neither are in any rush.
This was the cutest shop with great burgers & milk shakes and an extremely friendly staff!
This place is amazing. A throwback to a si.oler time. Many of the customers I saw while there (familiar aces the second trip too) have been stopping in since they were kids and that was a very long time ago
Excellent burgers. We sometimes travel the 60 miles to get to Brookjngs just for lunch at Nick's.
Whenever I have time .... And I'm in Brookings... I want good food at a reasonable price... I go to this burger shop...A !
Great burgers and love their shakes
A must do every time we come to Brookings
Funky burger tiny meat patty but VERY good you need to order a double the have no fries but do have bags of chips
How can you not love Nicks? Been here as a kid...after surgery...after meetings. It’s a must each and every time I visit Brookings!
I meant to put a five star I love the place
It's the best ever! Guests always request it when they visit. Retro vibe, with seating around a short bar encircling the griddle. I love watching them prep my food almost as much as I love eating that mini burger covered in yummy classic toppings on the tastiest bun in the Midwest!
A South Dakota classic. Stopped and grabbed a bag of cheese burgers. It was a real treat.
Nice historic place
Best burgers in the area. They do make an occasional mistake, like everyone else, but the issue I experienced they corrected immediately and made it right. Excellent service, staff, prices and food!
The burgers are small and spendy but delicious
Always a good meal here and the value is great.
Great burger, awesome pie and ice cream!
Very good! Hamburgers are a bit small but everyone was nice and the food was so good!
Greasy and great!
First time! Will be back next time I roll through Brookings!
Was told to try it out for local hot spot. got a double cheeseburger and chips. was more a slider, three bites and it was down, chips was just a small prepackaged size I give my kids two of. burger was great but would think of it more of a between meal snack personally.
No way you can turn a Nick's burger down. They are so good!
Best sliders around. Famous for a reason, yum!
Service was amazing. Burgers were de-lish
Burgers always the best. Love atmosphere. Stop ever time in the area.
Hamburgers are good, but small - no fries, only potato chips
Burgers were great and pretty cheap (albeit a little small). However the venue is small and wait times are long. All in all, if you aren't in a hurry, STOP HERE NOW!!!
Came with a class, but they served us with speed. Burgers are cheap and quality, and they have pie so they have top marks in my book. It's a real neat and good place to stop for lunch.
One of our favorite places!
Really good
Just what you'd expect from a 1950's hamburger joint. Great burgers, shakes and malts. Fast, casual, and friendly. Great spot for a quick lunch.
I drive from Sioux Falls just to have there amazing burgers
Oh my gosh!! I have not ever seen a hamburger joint like this one. I love the concept of serving ONLY hamburger chips in a bag and drinks. No french fries but the burgers are hand formed and cooked on a real grill. You have got to experience this place.... thanks
Great burgers!! Small town diner feel.
Good food, just nothing special in my opinion.
Local favorite, always good little burgers.
Awesome food
Quite a unique experience, but I'm not sure the novelty justifies the price.
Best burgers!! Awesome nostalgic hamburger shop.
Great food, awesome staff, and a good price.
A local favorite across the decades which really must be experienced.
The building is what attracted us but the food not so much. The burgers are very small be ready to order more than one, the pie was cold and not the greatest. Over all it’s a bit akward experience eating inside and the staff looked like they didn’t know what they were doing.
Cool location, neat style, but be prepared to wait a bit.
Best hamburgers in town..
The cheeseburgers are great, you need two cheeseburgers and a coke to make it a meal.
Great food! burgers are small so get 2. very reasonable prices
Good burgers, small slider size burgers. Disappointed that fries are not served. It's not your average burger joint. Burgers are good though.
Great food and service. Servers are very attentive to you.
Fantastic. Wish they had fries, but very good nonetheless.
Cute family 1940's style lunch counter. Burgers were a bit pricey given the size of the hamburger (think sliders). And the .40¢ surcharge per piece of cheese kind of threw me for a loop. Basic hamburger condiments: pickle, onion, mustard, catsup, relish, but no mayo, lettuce or tomato. And don't look for French fries here either - just assorted bagged potato chips. Sodas available by the glass or can. BUT WAIT!! Let's talk about the HOME MADE pies!! The variety of pies is mind boggling! And they are DELICIOUS! And God love the servers, they will warm up the sinfully sweet slices for you and top it with a veritable mountain of whipped cream or ice cream or both - you decide the depth of your sugar coma. Nick's also offers hand dipped milkshakes, malts, sundaes, pick your poison. Also a small breakfast menu.
Burgers and malts! ...feels like old times. We had to hit up Nick's on the weekend our daughter graduated from SDSU.
It's cool for an original Burger joint asthetic, but it's not worth the money for the little amount of product
I really like their burgers. But they just seem to be getting smaller all the time. I go there to have a hamburger, not mostly bun. Otherwise i would have given 5 stars.
Very good food
Best burgers and great atmosphere.
The experience of something my father experienced 50+ years ago was well worth the drive. Stories and memories shared while we watched our burgers be cool is gonna be a fond memory. The taste was good enough for me to order a 3rd burger. Place is very simple but also great. Staff was very polite and prompt. I will return someday.
You go here for the nostalgia...not the food. The prices have increased. Not impressed with the burgers last visit.
Very disappointed. $5 for a quarter of a cheeseburger. I went there for lunch not for a one bite snack that is over charged for the product with nothing else included. I will never go out of my way for that again not will I be recommending this place to anyone.
Simple delicious burgers. Also had a slice of their blue berry pie. Excellent. Can't wait to visit again
The best burger I've tasted in a while, really, really good. Simple and easy menu.
Best hidden gem in Brookings
Cute little resteraunt we were told to visit while up in Brookings. Small little sliders are made assembly line style. Super delicious
Fun place. Wish they served French fries!
Great burgers, fun atmosphere.
I love this place. Pure nostalgia
Expensive but so worth it!
The burgers were delicious and the employees were nice.
There are few things that pay homage to the undying ideals of America than the classic burger. While on the surface it's just your typical beef, cheese, lettuce and ketchup, when you really dive into it you can see that burgers are, well, America. They are freedom, they are opportunity, and they're one of the few remaining things that can truly unite the American people under the star spangled banner. I say this because Nick's Hamburger shop represented this American glory better than any other burger joint I have been to in my life. Everything about my experience dining at Nick's was a joy. The meal, the decor around the store, the friendly staff, it was the full package. The burger itself was amazing, of course. It was both amazing and impactful without thinking too much of itself. A burger that felt both courageous and humble at the same time. However, my benefits from eating at Nick's didn't stop with the patty. Above all else, it gave me hope. This country is divided, there's no question about it, yet the burger I had at Nick's lent me the optimism I needed to truly believe that we would persist through the dark times and into the promised land of cooperation and love once again. I walked out of Nick's a different person, with different hopes and dreams. I cannot thank the good folks who made this experience a reality enough
Grew up in this area, and remember Nick's very well. The buns are awesome! The rest of the burger is wonderful too. Im glad they are still there, old Amercian style dinner that I personally hope never dies!
Love the place but the hamburgers could be a little bigger
Great burgers
The hamburgers are still great but service is extremely slow with too many employees that really don't know what they're doing. I worked there for Nick & Duane. Mary & I could work circles around them. Hamburgers are great, service is lacking. It's too bad because that place has been in Brookings so long. It's a classic, a legend.
Nick's burgers, you cant get them anywhere else!
Great food and a landmark! Service is always friendly and helpful.
Great local burger diner!
Fantastic.
Great burgers and great atmosphere
Good burgers!
Great slider sized burgers. Great atmosphere.
Nick's hamburgers!...the very best!...four generations of our family have enjoyed this iconic, delicious tradition!!! ♡
As always GREAT
Great burger. Really cool place to eat
Good burgers, but nothing really special about it.
Boy what a great place to visit. I have never been to Brookings SD. We went there for the first time and enjoyed Nick's Hamburgers. The day was absolutely wonderful. The staff was very friendly and eager to serve the crowd. The burgers are small but packed full of deliciousness. Two thumbs up for Nick's Hamburgers
My son and husband love this place. I thought the hamburgers were small - they each ate three cheeseburgers. No fries, just chips.
So yummy!
Nothing special about this place. Had to wait almost 30 minutes, not enough indoor seating so we had to sit outside which wouldn't have mattered except it was cold and we had a baby and when we got our hamburgers we were left wondering why we just spent $60 on hamburgers. McDonald's or Burger King would have been a better value. All we ordered was hamburgers, cheeseburgers, pop and chips... Maybe they have pies to die for or something but the sliders aren't worth the money/time.
Great burgers! Slightly overpriced, but the ambiance and food make up for it. Friendly staff. My husband left his hat there, and ee live hours away, but they actually priority mailed it to us! Thank you for being a great small town business
This is a definite stop every time we're in Brookings!
Fabulous experience, great burgers and shakes! Fun!
Great
The burgers are great!! The atmosphere is really cool. Don't do Brookings without having a Nick-burger!
Great food. Friendly service. Always greets us.
A little expensive if you are hungry but best burgers ever.
Great tasting little burgers.
Perfection. My family has eaten at Nicks since the 1930s. It's been mainstay tradition for their excellent mini burgers, good prices, and excellent customer service. If I could give six or even seven stars I would.
I've been here twice. The burgers are awesome but the service this time was a bit harsh. A gentleman who worked there got rude with a woman who said it was busy everywhere today. Saying "it's graduation day and we get a lot of tourist's." But huffy. Tourist's and the university keep your little town afloat my good sir. Move if you don't like it. But Don't be rude to the people who bring in those dollars.
Local legend with sliders, chips and a drink. Theyvalso have pie and ice cream.
Small burgers with small taste at a cheap price. Not sure how they are "the best burgers in South Dakota".
Good food and atmosphere.. beautiful historic building. Fun place to eat and chat with people..
Nick's is a quaint old timey, no frills, burger joint that is part of the fabric of Brookings. The locals love it. The striking red and white building houses a U-shaped burger counter that can be very busy at peak mealtimes and you might need to wait for a stool. Otherwise, there is take out or outdoor dining during warmer weather. The menu is simple. The burgers are served up on a simple piece of paper. They sell a slider sized burger plain, or with ketchup, mustard, onion, pickles, mustard relish, and/or with cheese on a homemade bun. The burgers are uniquely cooked as they are kinda grill-fried but are not overly greasy. I get my burgers with everything. I can usually eat two, but a big eater could easily eat 3 or 4. There are no fries here, just bags of chips. Get the Pickle chips they are a tangy and tasty compliment to the burgers. Fountain drinks are served in what is a very small (10 or 12 oz.) glass by today's standards, but refills are free. Be sure to order a slice of their home made pie or an old fashioned malt. They are delicious and worth the calorie splurge. Nick's is now open for breakfast, serving its burger topped with a fried egg and coffee, tea or hot chocolate. If you pay with cash expect to get change in the form of $2 bills, dollar coins, and fifty cent pieces. It's part of the Nick's experience. Staff is usually high school and college students who are always courteous and friendly, but not the most animated or entertaining. You can buy souvenir T shirts and caps as well. While Nick's isn't fancy, it doesn't try to be, and maybe you can get a bigger more fancily dressed burger with fries elsewhere, it is certainly worth it to stop at Nick's and try it out while in town.
The meat of burger is very tasty
Nick's is always good. The burgers have been made like this for years. They have been making sliders before sliders were invented.
Best hamburgers. Love the relish!
Finally I had a chance to eat at Nick's. It more than lived up to its fame! On a day when its -10°, there was a steady stream of customers. Great food, great service, great old style atmosphere & I will be back!
Great tasting, fresh, and quick. Perfect at what they do.

Quick friendly good service.
Awful place to eat at the whole time I was sitting there trying to eat my sandwich and drink my shake they kept offering me a to-go package to leave. Then the owner goes around and passes everybody out a little gift look like a keychain or something and did not pass one to me. Very biased place to eat
Great food
Simple tasty sliders, a local staple.
Always a great place. Two doubles with cheese super delicious
Great food and awesome service
