Southern soul food with a gourmet twist! The staff is knowledgeable and super friendly. You can color on the paper placed over the table which is great if you'd like to take a family outing with the kids. Absolutely love this restaurant!
We’ve been wanting to try this restaurant for years and finally made it. We really enjoyed our meal. The pork chops were delicious and I would definitely come back to have them again. The meal shared nicely between myself and my husband. The thunder was delicious.
Outstanding gem of a spot! Had the pork chop, braised collards and mashed redskin potatoes. Would order the same meal three times per day and a fourth on Sundays. My friend had the catfish and was over the moon! Everything was hot and well seasoned! Couple next to us kept talking about how good their food was. They both had the catfish. Nice people, nice place, delicious lunch. Couldn’t stop consuming the fries. French fries have an old-bay type spice.
I always love coming home to see my folks. Partially because I know I’m going to usually stop by The Glass Onion. The farm to table menu is always satisfactory, and the staff is just as great! I always love the quail. You can’t find friendlier folks in West Ashley!! The local art is always fun to look at also. Hands down, I highly recommend stopping by! You won’t regret it!
Everything was wonderful. The food was delicious, drinks were nice, and the service was great. We will definitely be back. I'm not sure why I kept skipping this gem!
Food is very good and staff really friendly. We had our first shrimp&grit and found It delicious. Desserts were great, too.
Great Southern Farm to Table cuisine in a down home atmosphere with great service and smiles all around!
Super friendly staff and the service was really prompt. I ordered the gumbo and fried green tomatoes. The tomatoes were good, thick cut, with a cornmeal batter and a delicious pimento cheese on top. The gumbo was disappointing, too much okra and a lot of it was really hard and woody. I couldn't swallow it. I had a glass of red wine that I sent back. It was old and smelled and tasted like vinegar. The staff and manager were great. The gumbo was removed from my bill and the manager opened a new bottle of wine for me.
The food was excellent, the staff was friendly and knowledgeable. A very fine dining experience!
Friendly staff, but the food is too bland to be considered "soul food". They seem to promote local, farm-to-table, fresh ingredients, which is commendable and welcomed. However, their "soul-ful' intent and finished product are two different things. I'm not talking about adding salt and sugar, but generous herbs and spices that are the essence of what has been known as soul food for generations.
I've never had a bad meal while dining here. Today, I thoroughly enjoyed the Country Fried Steak with gravy and mashed potatoes. I added a side of collards and a side of red rice. Not because the portions are small, but because I wanted some of those, too! Everything was delicious, even if I didn't finish it all. I saved room for a few bites of their bread pudding. Amazing! Great experience as always!
First time here and was pleased. The staff and server were very nice. The food was hot fresh and fried food was crisp and not greasy.
Burger Night with a double Patty and pimento cheese. All their dishes are great.
So many great restaurants in Charleston to choose from, but we were looking for one with many local faves (and vegetarian options) and this seemed like the place. It did not disappoint! I got the Fried Green Tomato and Pimento cheese stuffed sandwich. So delicious! The boiled peanuts were a hit with the whole fam as well as the fried okra biegnets.
Great service, great food. Quiet, friendly atmosphere. Great for any occasion
We went here not knowing the menu changes often. So the items we had our heart set on were not available. The food was ok. The staff was extremely nice.
We enjoyed a lovely dinner and service by Keri. We started by trying the tuna salad and beet salad, which were very flavorful. Several of our group had the flounder with smashed potatoes and rutabagas, which was excellent and the ribeye steak dinner was also enjoyed. The dessert choices were great and we split the bread pudding with whiskey sauce and the custard with a strawberry compote. The atmosphere is friendly and casual. Note- the parking lot is tight. Recommended & glad we tried it.
My dear friend and I both ordered the Rib-eye. They steaks tasted perfect, however he got a very fatty piece of meat, and mine was not fatty but quite massive. I felt bad when he left all that fat on his plate. The fries that he ordered as an appetizer were extremely salty, so that one couldn't taste the potatoes. My Brussel sprouts tasted good, and the roast potatoes were also tasty, but everything look black on the plate when it arrrived--the sprouts were grilled, and I don't know how the red potatoes were done . Did the name "Blackened Rib-eye" refer to the entire meal? would have preferred to have the sides to be plainer. In conclusion, I would have to say that the Rib-eye was very delicious, so that is why I'm giving it four stars. The waitress was very nice too. I took most of my meal home in a to-go box because it was too much to divulge in one sitting. The next day, the food tasted yummy. Whoever is preparing the steaks is doing a fab job. Ease up on the salt on some dishes. Thanks!
There's a reason that this joint was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. It's a funky little place with a great relaxed atmosphere and incredible food. If you're looking for fresh, local, southern fare, this is your place. The menu varies, so check the website for the days offerings. No matter what they're serving, you can't go wrong here.
This restaurant is always a pleasure to grab a bit to eat. Friendly service, great atmosphere, delicious and unique menu items. All in all, it’s definitely worth a visit.
I had the shrimp poboy with a side of fried green tomatoes! They both were delicious! I have to return to try other items!! My try this place!!
Really strong menu. Great interpretations of classic soul food dishes.
Visiting Charleston, went for dinner, cute, great food, very hipster. Loved it.
Much of the menu is locally inspired and sourced, and I have yet to have a meal there that wasn’t extremely satisfying. The specials are creative and delicious, as well. Check out their little check-out grocery section for (premade) dinners and a selection of local drinks and products.
I have eaten here twice. The food does not disappoint and I love the atmosphere.
Great food, carefully prepared. Service was excellent. Casual place. Would recommend reservations.
Very nice quiet little place to grab dinner. The food menus are changed to provide a variety but sometimes it seems not often / not a big enough selection to choose from.... I would recommend going of you haven't and their menu is on line to look over before you go to see what they are having that day.
Fabulous!! We had the shrimp po boy and green tomato po boy!! Seasoned so well I could taste the shrimp over the bread! Not too hot not too bland. Laid back atmosphere.
The shrimp and grits are incredible! Great, friendly service too
Food and service were great! We had the over stuffed shrimp po-boys.
An awesome restaurant that prides itself on sourcing its items locally. Excellent food, although it's on the pricey side. I don't blame them for this, one of the prices you pay quite literally for quality materials.
They have a really nice wait staff, and comfortable setting for dining. The parking lot is very small and if you pull in with no spot available, you will have a hard time getting back out especially if someone else has just pulled in. That said, the food was a little pricey for the servings. They have great ratings here, but don't expect to find something familiar every time because the menu changes every day, apparently, and that was disappointing as I was hoping to find something similar to their lunch menu available. Nope. I had grouper cheeks (had to look it up later) and rutabagas with smashed potatoes. It was something new and okay, but a little bland for my tastes. Not my favorite meal on this trip.
The Quail was delicious, and the waiter was very attentive. Very much worth a visit.
I have not much to say. It was good.
Neighborhood gem! Counter service, casual atmosphere, full bar service and amazing food! Perfect brunch/lunch/or dinner! We're sad we didn't try the mac and cheese at the next table! Must try the fried oyster & eggs salad lettuce cup, okra beignet and FGT w/ pimento cheese and the smoke
I had a group of about 10 people meet for Saturday brunch and they were super accommodating. The food was also delicious! The french toast was insane and their grits are so good (and I don't usually like grits). I definitely recommend this place and will be back!
This is the second time at the Glass Onion the food was fresh and innovative we enjoyed it very much will go back and the buttermilk and lemon curd dessert was to die for not too sweet not too sour perfect
My husband loves this restaurant. Great waiter that recommended the sheepshead fish to my husband and he loved it. He said that it was flaky and sweet. I had the fried pork chop with kale and mashed potatoes. It was delicious. I loved the kale. Everything was cooked perfectly. We will definitely go back there. They have a cookbook with their recipes in it. We are excited about using it. The cornbread with warm honey is also delicious.
It was a party going on in my mouth trying all these delicious food. The fried green tomatoes were awesome!
After reading the reviews online, I visited with higher than normal expectations. The service was friendly and helpful. However, the menu was limited. The food was average.
I have been here twice in recent months and have enjoyed it both times. It had been awhile since I have been to The Glass Onion and I am not sure why I waited so long to come back! I had the pleasure of having Laurel as my server the first time and Cassie my second time. Food was awesome, their recommendations were helpful and the service was impeccable. See you soon Glass Onion! Thanks ladies for the GREAT service!
They took a lot of time to get the food even when the restaurant was not super busy, but food is great especially bread pudding.
It was good. Nothing really stood out. Food is tasty, and locally sourced, so that's a positive!
Good food that employee told me the name of the farm it came from.
Great food, easy going ambiance
What a great little place. The staff are wonderful the atmosphere is amazing for dinner with the lower lighting and soft music. The food was absolutely outstanding. They change two entrees on their menu pretty often to keep things fresh so make you go back to try something new. We always eat family style so I was able to try all the different meals. The fried pork chops were out of this world. The breading was fantastic and the "smashed" potatoes were delicious. The fried catfish was equally as good and very juicy and the red rice that came with it was some of the best I have had around town, and Charleston has alot of good red rice. My shrimp and grits were very tasty with the right amount of shrimp to sausage ratio. And our appetizers of shells and cheese and the stuffed clams were a great way to start off the meal. I will definitely be coming back to try something new once the menu changes again.
Love this place for it's fresh food!
fantastic food - best we had in charleston
Amazing spot! Great food and superb service.
Fun place, good food!
We echo what many others have already said: The food, service, atmosphere, and attitude of the people who work here were all excellent. We will definitely be back the next time we visit Charleston. If the parking lot is full, DO NOT park at the restaurant next-door. Rather, park at the grocery store that is just tucked in behind restaurant. The short walk back to your car after such a satisfying meal will do you good!
One of my favorite places in Charleston. Southern but innovative... delicious and fresh... their food is absolutely divine and I love bringing friends and family here to show off just how good the food is in my town :)
It was great! Food was delicious! Our server, Levi, was amazing!! Enjoyed it and will be going again!!
The atmosphere was not romantic at all, I wish it was a little nice in the inside. That being said, the food was fantastic! I recommend the cornbread. The price for food was a little on the high side, but it really was delicious. I would like to see a few more options, particularly vegetarian options.
One of the hidden gems of Charleston! Incredible Southern cuisine. This place does not disappoint!
I was a bit skeptical at first looking at the menu but after the food came out and I tasted it.........I will say I never have had a better dining experience anywhere. The waitress was kind and explained the menu well. I will put this in my top 3 best places I have ever eaten anywhere in the country!!! Yes....it was that good!! I wish we had a place like this in my hometown.......Charleston you are lucky to have such a place!
I absolutely love The Glass Onion! The food never disappoints. My biggest problem is I can never decide what exactly I want for my entree because everything is delicious!!
A fabulous dinner! Our service was stellar and we enjoyed our wine as well as my Scallops and my husband's Quail. The Carolina golden rice and locally sourced collard greens reflect dedication to our local heritage.
Great West Ashley gem. Very good southern fare using local ingredients. Friendly service. Best friend catfish in town. A little pricey, but the food is great.
Great service. Fine Southern food
Can’t say anything but praise for this place. Awesome. Hot. Delish) everyone in our party loved their food selection.
Some of the best food ever
First time, but not the last. Excellent food and service.
One of the secret places we've found on our air bnb travels. This place is absolutely amazing. Menu rotates but theres always at least one favorite on there that can fill you up. The French fries were huge and decadent; duck was the entree and it served any high end restaurant well. Highly recommend.
Excellent staff. Very friendly and a great food!
The food taste so good you will eat more than you mean too but still be happy about it. A small nondescript place with stellar food and beverage.
Had to come tell everyone about the killer southern shrimp and grits and collard greens this place is serving up. There was no wait and the wait staff was incredible.
I gave it only five stars because it won't let me select 100. The food here is off the hook good. Come hungry. Leave happy!!
Consistently love this place. Fresh downtown quality at West Ashley prices.
Great service, scallops were raw and manager told me that they were on the medium side.
Food was served quick and was fantastic.
We had the bread pudding, which was phe-nom-en-al. Some of the best bread pudding I've had in a long while. The only way to make it better would be to offer vanilla ice cream to go with it. Seriously good stuff.
Food was great and the service was excellent. My husband had the quail with red rice and garlic bread while I had the pork chops with squash casserole and thunder...both were very good. The chops were crispy, nicely spiced and juicy. The quail was crispy and the red rice had a nice bite to it. We had the fried green tomatoes for an appetizer. Nice big slices with a crispy batter and pimento cheese on top...yum! Levi was a fantastic waiter...funny and made the meal so enjoyable. Too full to try the desserts but I'm sure they are probably as good as the meal was.
The food here is very delicious. Staff is super nice and helpful. I recommend giving it a try if you are in the area. My wife and I both had fried fish and we weren't disappointed.
My husband and I dined here on a Friday night to celebrate his birthday. Our server, Levi, was amazing. Probably the best food service I’ve ever had! The food was outstanding! Everything was cooked to perfection! What an amazing experience! No doubt I plan to return!
Excellent shrimp and grits as well as shrimp po-boy. Fresh food, good service.
Tired of the same old dishes? The Glass Onion can fix that. Their menu changes daily with locally sourced ingredients for imaginative combinations. I can't wait to try it again.
Grouper fish was extremely salty! I ended up having to order something else which was pretty good but not very warm (soup). When I asked if they had French Onion soup the waitress said they didn't but as we were leaving the table next to us was served one.
Delicious. The decor is not the prettiest but the food is delicious. Its a casual dining experience. I had the pork belly and it was crispy on the outside and so flavorful. Hubby had the catfish and just loved it. Prices are also very fair. Definitely a place to come back to!
Such delicious food!!!
Meh Overpriced hipster fare Food was just ok, our server was enthusiastic and attentive Nothing to write home about but a solid middle of the road joint
This is a great Place for lunch or dinner. I escape the restaurants downtown to The Glass Onion at least once or twice a week. You can Always tell when a business owner cares for their business because, it runs like this place does. I always get a great meal here and so will you. If you have never been to the Onion then I encourage y’all to try it. Tell them Jason Peé said you got to try this place.
Wonderful food, a must try in Charleston! Staff are friendly. Food tastes great, is fresh and prepared perfectly! My husband and I both enjoyed our meals. I highly recommend the grits, and fried green tomato po boy.
Gried catfish, French fries & cold slaw
Relaxed atmosphere, local food options
I've passed this place a thousand times, but decided to actually look at their menu. They change the menu changes twice a day so you don't know what you're going to get, but the food is fresh and locally grown. I had the fried pork chops with mash potatoes, field peas, and added a side of collards. Very good! The dessert of choice was the orange creamsicle cake. Lord have mercy! It's a must go!
Amazing small intimate and delicious.
Loved it! Food was wonderful!
Everything Was delicious
Great shrimp and grits! The orange cake was very tasty.
What a great restaurant. The food was very good. Small very relaxed atmosphere. We really enjoyed our lunch here and will be sure to visit again on our next trip. Excellent job!!
This was my partner and my first visit. The restaurant seemed to have plenty of space despite the lunchtime crowd. It was also clean. The menu was a bit eclectic, but that's what makes it interesting. My partner had the shrimp p.o.- boy and I had the pork sandwich. Both were excellent. Fries and accompanying hollandaise sauce were unique and mouth watering. Overall, a really nice first experience. Definitely plan to go back for dinner.
Quality of the food is amazing and service just screams southern hospitality and they really care about ingredients and where they come from
Very good food. Awesome service!
Large portions of typically Southern food. Delicious crispy fried chicken po'boy! Homemade pickles and delicious fries. Very friendly staff and very "local" feel.
Po Boys were delish! Service was great.
Meh..for like the 3rd time
What an exceptional place the Glass Onion is. Amazing ingredients, prepared with skill, served with kindness, and flavors that meld beautifully. I enjoyed the scallops with peas and rice, my companions at dinner had the special crab pasta with sausage, and the fried catfish and greens. Everyone exclaimed over their meals. The okra beignets were outstanding. I recommend this restaurant has a choice when you want perfectly prepared, Great Southern food with style.
We enjoyed the food very much. We shared the shells and cheese with andouille sausage. Then I had the crab cake plate and chose fries and collard greens. Then we had a slice of peanut butter and chocolate pie! Oh my goodness, so good. We will go again when in the area.
Excellent food and service
The soup was Very spicy. Was interesting dipping fries in bearnaise sauce. My friends chicken sandwich was enormous.
Had a good time and great food! Really enjoyed the food actually!! There only down side is it is kind of pricey.
Really good food and a dynamic menu. Expensive with small portions though.
The food was delicious! My daughter and I shared the Fried Green Tomatoes with Pimento Cheese and Shrimp Po'boy, plenty of food for 2. I love how conscious they are about the environment; local food, fresh local shrimp, paper straws, even the restrooms used Myers handsoap and hand dryers!
We had the green fried tomato sandwich, definitely worth it. If you go get the fries with there special sauce. They are dog friendly you just sit outside. You order first and they bring your food out. You pay after eating The iced tea was good also nothing special just cool and refreshing.
Great ambiance love the lighting the shrimp and grits wasn't as good as they said it was. But the seared scallops were amazing
I have loved the shells and cheese for years. But twice now I have ordered it and it came out dry. The first time I didn’t say anything. The second time I told our waitress and she took it back to fix it but the chef said that is just how it is made. Very disappointing.
Great food. The scallops were perfectly sauted on a great summer succotash. Shrimp and grits were creamy and devine. Enjoyed bread pudding with whiskey sauce. Service was excellent and the decore casual.
I've never had a bad meal here! This is a go to when friends are in town and want somewhere local.
Awesome service! Great garden salad and pimento cheese sandwich made with a toasted buttery bread. We also had mimosas which were served in a plain glass....maybe a traditional champagne glass would be better?
Excellent service and the food was phenomenal I can’t wait to go back!
Good food. Poor service. Stuck up staff.
Stopped in here when we were Charleston for the eclipse. The food was really good, though my kid was being too picky that day. Lovely ambiance as well. I had the pork belly that was on the menu at the time, and thought it could use a little more seasoning. But everything else was perfect, and a little salt and pepper fixed mine right on up. My kid and I had a good laugh over the Guy Fieri thing by the bathrooms.
They offer some nice craft beers here. Chicken poor-boy, fried green tomato poor-boy, pimento cheese sandwich, are all delicious and go great with the beers. You walk in and order from the items on the chalk board. Pick your sides and then head over to your table. They move your food through quickly and understand if you're in a hurry. Love these people. If you're looking for a half pint or a full pint of pimento cheese you can pick it up on the run from their grocery section, to the right of the front door.
Well sourced and well prepared food. Friendly staff make for an overall great experience. The menu changes, so we missed out on the deviled eggs but the meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and butter beans were excellent. Kid friendly and the paper-topped tables are a bonus.
Delicious and local. Can't stay away.
Delicious food and wonderful friendly people. I stop by every time I'm near Charleston.
Great concise menu, friendly staff, and great atmosphere.
The food was great. Fresh and flavorful.
Shrimp Po Boys were very good but the gumbo was even better :)
They have such awesome food!! Eclectic, local, and delicious.
The food was really good, the service was awesome! Very down-home. A little pricey, but farm to table fresh.
Friendly place ,great food
Seafood Boudin and Shrimp and Grits were unbelievably delicious. Will come back everytime im in Charleston.
Most excellent service and the food was delicious....
Nice atmosphere; good service;good selection of food
Awesome fresh food. Always flavorful and well-prepared. Staff is friendly and eager to help every time.
Been here many times. Always friendly staff and excellent food. I like how they change up the menu every so often to keep it interesting. Tonight I had the scallops with Carolina Gold rice. Probably the most perfectly cooked scallops I ever had. Very tender and flavorful without too much extra seasoning. This will continue to be my go to restaurant in the West Ashley area.
Was wonderful! Food was fantastic and our waitress was fabulous!
It was hard to choose what we wanted to eat. It all looked good. We ended up with the special and totally satisfied.
Quiet, causal atmosphere with a small, distinct menu. Great beer and wine selection. Friendly service. The shrimp and grits were excellent, as were the fries and fried okra.
I've been told nothing but wonderful things about this obscure restaurant....unassuming building, simple, well used dining furniture, friendly staff...respectful...prompt ...they listen to what you say. ** But....the food was not five star. Fried green tomatoes were cut to thick...cold in the middle... and ...chewy ....pimento cheese...light, pleasant flavor... quite good but salty. Red rice was good.... sneaky, secret heat jumped out at you after you swallowed. I was warned. Menu is very southern and confusing to a New Englander . . . like deep fried pig ears ...really!?!?! Coffee was fresh hot and tasty....All is forgiven when dessert landed. We both ordered slices of Orange Creamscicle Cake. OMG....moist, tall, rich real orange flavor ...cream?yes Real and just right. Will I go back...yes...maybe it was just a tough day....so I'll go back soon... .
Food tastes amazing. Customer service is great. The one thing that drove me bananas is there is no burger option for kids meals. 2 of 3 my children love burgers and although they accommodated for one child who was adamant about getting a burger, I didn't get one for my 2 year old.
Cute place, really good food.
The food was too spicy and SALTY. The atmosphere was GREAT and location was good. They need more parking spaces. I would go there again. Customer service was good.
Friendly, attentive staff and very tasty lunch.
This is a good old southern restaurant that serves very modern food. I enjoyed the trout dish, cooked perfectly. They did their Geechie Grits perfectly as well, creamy and rich.
Laid back atmosphere. Simple yet delicious food and right portion. Great and friendly service. Would recommend.
We stopped here for lunch on our way into the city. It's located between Johns island and downtown Charleston. Looks like nothing from the outside just a building in a strip mall type thing. But inside you get fresh local ingredients cooked with love. The shrimp and grits were wonderful. The cornbread was so dense I couldn't finish it. And I wasn't planning on desert until the waiter mentioned a buttermilk Custard with lemon curd topping. So fresh and refreshing!
The fried catfish is everything you ever wanted in traditionally cooked perfection.
Every time I go here I try something different. I've been pleasantly surprised.. Everything from Saturday Breakfast to evening dinner are always great. I make it a point to visit the Glass Onion when I'm in Charleston SC. I live 5 hours away in NC.
Food was good. Atmosphere not so much
Excellent food and service. Terrible music.
So we got out of work and basically stumbled upon here very frendly but I am not there to make friends I am hungry want something new and different was not excited over the limited menu but found one of the 2 options to be accepted so food came and just was not impressed maybe I try it again but for the price to taste probably not hey you made 80 bucks of me and that's it.......
Slipped a notch since our last visit. Maybe it was just a bad night. Even our favorite (fries with bearnaise sauce) were not up to par.
Excellent service and food. The large ribeye was done to perfection. And the dessert of red sauce custard... I finished by scraping the plate clean! :)
Best Po' Boys in town!
Great food! Smaller place so would recommend reservations for groups bigger then 4. They change the menu daily so it's always new stuff, always fresh. Good prices, you get what you pay for. Staff was very nice, cheerful. Highly recommend this place
The BEST ribeye steak I think that I've ever had !! The Brussels sprouts and potatoes where delicious!! Husband had the catfish with collared greens and rice ,said it was some of the best he has had !! The pimento cheese was also delicious!! Would highly recommend this place!!
The fried green tomatoes were great, but everything else we ordered was either just average or slightly below. Too out of the way to be worth the trip. The service was very friendly and prompt.
Delicious food, and great service. Nice atmosphere!
Googling "good burgers" , this popped up. They only have burgers on Wednesday nights. If you want a good burger, don't come here. Delicious food though.
Pork chop and fried green tomatoes were awesome! And kids love the paper on the table to create their own art!
Excellent, the fried green tomatoes with sweet corn was awesome.
Our meal was fantastic! Fresh local favorites, prepared with a lot of thought and made to order.
This is not a fancy place, but have the best ribaye in Charleston! Great food!
Atmosphere is very chill, which I enjoyed. The food was excellent. Still, the price was just a tad high. The menu was a straight rip-off of another iconic Charleston eatery (very obvious, haha). Despite that, it was done well. 4 out 5 stars for taste and vibe. Some originality and a buck off the top would be a sure 5 star!
