REVIEWS OF The CODfather, Proper Fish & Chips IN South Carolina

We were looking for a lunch spot and came across this restaurant. Good food the breading on the fish was crispy and delicious. Fries were good also. Was plenty for my wife and I to share as a lunch (world famous fish and chips). Awesome draft beer selection. Indoor and outdoor seating would definitely recommend and will be back! Great job!

M M

It was real good in the beginning before the upgrades. The COD was a lil too oily last time went. It’s more of a place on where folks just want to try cause of them being famous rather than for a good quality COD.

Kelly A. Calhoun

I mean...how can you not try out a lunch spot who is named after a pun? Beautiful! I got the fish + chips (tasty) and a side of some English dish which was mashed peas. It was good. This place was super crowded but had a quaint and unique vibe. Will be coming back for sure!

Pamela Rodgers

Awesome food! Decent prices. I would definitely go back.

Jeremy Haney

I've heard so, SO many things about this joint. Unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to the hype. First and foremost, the fish is phenomenal! That and the tartar sauce exceeded expectations. But the chips were soggy, and when that's half of your damn name, that's a big deal. I also tried the sausage roll, the bacon and chicken pie, the mushy peas, gravy, and the curry sauce. Literally the entire menu. I felt the curry sauce was fantastic, and I will be back for the fish and curry sauce, but I found the remainder to be bland. I suppose that's what British food is known for... alas. Again, I'll be back for what was good, but damn, get the fries right.

Shantel Sam

Had the fish and chips. Food was fresh and portions were quite large. Great customer service and nice ambiance.

Tracey Coomer

Great lunch spot with amazing fish! Owner was working alongside his employees and made sure we were satisfied with our meal.

Kevin Nofsinger

A lot of people do fish and chips but not like this. The half portion is enough for one and is fried to perfection outside and wonderfully flaky inside. Great helpful and friendly staff and unique options of sides such as mashed peas.

Mile Knox

Fast friendly service. Good fish to much fries. I order just fish and share fries with the wife. Always friendly. Keep up good work.

social one

Definitely excellent fish and chips in North Charleston. Get off the beaten path for the best!

Steven Honaker

Best fish and chips I've had in a long time.

anne mcelheron

Good was great . Everything was great quality excellant enjoyed every bite . Can't wait to go back

Keesha Tucker

Absolutely delicious! The filet is huge! I had to dab it with a napkin because of the grease, but let's face it, we weren't here for health food and the crispiness lasted the whole meal through! The fries might be the best I ever had. Crisp on the outside while soft and steamy on the inside. Their tartar sauce is to die for. I can't recommend any fish house that doesn't have good sauce. The texture is lighter than what I am used to, but the flavor is present enough to need very little sauce, so that's all good!

Daren Andrade

Great food and people!! Authentic British fish, chips, mushy peas, and herb tarter sauce. Hugh portion and food cooked fresh to order for maximum crunch!! Building outside needs some work, but ignore that, food is great!! Love the fish and chips here. The owner is super cool and always around checking on his guests and how they are enjoying things. Staff at the counter are super efficient and fast paced. The bartenders always friendly and the overall vibe is just fantastic.

Jim Howell

Best fried fish ever! Love the mushy peas and looking forward to trying one of their pies.

Clayton Kendall

Lovely place. Excellent fish and chips. The pies are also exquisite. Kind staff for how insanely busy the place constantly is. Good beer selection with locals, regionals, national, and international beers. Will be visiting every time I'm in town.

Louis Antonucci

It's a small place always crowded but the service is fast and friendly. I'll be going back again and again

Roberto Rodriguez

Great fish and chips/great service. Highly recommend

Tenese Barnett

What kind of unprofessional and distasteful business response is this. I saw this under another review posted: Response from the owner an hour ago The condiments are available on all the tables so you can season your own food to taste. I’m not your mommy, you can handle that part yourself. As far as the burnt grease, grow up. Holly Weckwerker

MrJatradesmof0

This location has great food for the price. The offer large Cod fish fillets by itself or along with other side dishes. It is a great location. It is close to the highway but not close to the interstate access.

Mayra Castaneda

Nice environment and the portions are great for the price. Large portions and the fish is fried to perfection. I'll most definitely be back. Shared with a friend and they were totally cool with that.

Jeremy Bollington

This place is the real deal - as a Brit who has missed real fish and chips (and mushy peas) for 20+ years I can attest to this. Food is great... but even better is the atmosphere and the passion of owner Adam - good on you mate - keep up the great work and good luck continuing to build your business (love the new location by the way). jb

Hvns

The best Fish and Chips Charleston SC has to offer and the serving size you get definitely fills you up. I would highly recommend going here if your in Charleston and try the Fish and Chips. They get busy around dinner time so come early if you can. Orders are fried fresh when ordering to ensure everything is hot amd fresh.

Misty Caldwell

Brought my sister in law and brother in law for the "sea monster" filets. It was amazing as always and the first time my husband and I have had the sea monsters. The tartar sauce is fantastic.

thea taylor

The Codfather is an AUTHENTIC English Fish and Chips Restaurant and Pub, offering the fare of an English Chippy. The food will have you planning your return visit, very soon. This is no Captain D's, so please don't insult the owner asking for cole slaw and other southern dishes, not served in an English Chippy. Owner Adam Randall and family, have made quite a good impression and many American friends, since arrival from across the pond. The Codfather is a must!

Michelle Quinn

It's amazing. Amazing food. Amazing people. Can't go wrong with fish and chips . And don't forget the mushy peas

Dave Allen

CODfather Proper fish n chips. GODFATHER of Fish and Chips is more like it. With the Seamonster size fish, the length of my arm. Thank you so much for our dinner and staying open late for us. Doesn't look like much from the outside, but inside it's awesome, bar seating cold beer and HOT FOOD.

Heath Barmes

Fish was greasy, fries were okay, and beer was tepid. The worse thing about the experience was the lack of air conditioning in summer. I might go back, but I'm not anxious for it.

Brian Odgers

Been here multiple times, always satisfied. The fish is phenomenal. This is cook to order, not fast food, so there is a slight wait while the angels make the fish. House made tartar sauce is great, and so are the sausage rolls.

Robert & Jennifer Kroening

Great food, flavor, large portions. Very good place to eat.

Micky Denton

Got carry out last night wonderful fish the only complaint was the curry dipping sauce cost $2 on top of the purchase of the cod basket. Highly recommend taste and proportion was wonderful. We will be back

Thom Watson

I'm usually not a big fish guy, but this was delicious! I love the soft breading on the fish, and I got the mushy peas, which were EXCELLENT. I can definitely see this place becoming a habit!

J Pomperada

A little expensive for what it is but good food. They have improved their tartar since the old location. New location has more room but can still get crowded at lunch time. Expect a few min wait before the food gets to you, it'll be piping hot.

Don Johnson

15 minutes to closing (9 p.m.). The gentleman behind the counter was eager to serve us. We were going to get our food to go. He asked us where we lived and when we told him we had a 20 minute drive, he insisted we eat in. Then, he arranged the perfect sized meal - fish and chips with an extra fillet - for the two of us. While eating offer meal, these orange came out to check on us. The experience was awesome. So much so that I plan on taking out of state relatives there when they are in town.

Benjamin A. Grewe

HUGE cod portions, fried to perfection. Their menu is small, but they do it VERY well. Come here as often as I can!

Elizabeth Goodwin

Best fish and tartar sauce I have had.

Josh Baker

My wife and I loved it. Food was great, fair prices and great service. We’re going back real soon!

Tiffany Steppe

Best place for British style fish n chips. They even have curry! Super laid back. Order and pay at the kitchen window and then they bring it to you. Sorry, no chicken tenders here kids. It's the cod father, not the chickenfather.

Anita Sloane

Great as usual. There is a covered deck. I got the full order of fish and chips. Got there about 1:15. No line but took a while to get order. Worth the wait.

Amy & Zach Winkler

Incredible!! Quite possibly the BEST fish & chips I've ever had. Delicious & cooked to perfection!! The homemade tartar sauce & mashed peas added a bonus level of awesomeness!! Highly recommend.

Edwin Wilson Jr.

I was impressed. I was looking for something fresh, casual, and laid back. Super cool staff. The fish and chips was extraordinary. Very simple menu, but quality eats. Ample beer selection. Very cool spot not too far from Park Circle.

Ambre Finlayson

The food was okay. It was very greasy and not much flavor though. The gravy is very thin and so is the tarter sauce. The tarter sauce had a good flavor to it. Be prepared to seat yourself and at lunch time it may be hard to find a seat, especially for more than two people. Overall, it was okay but I probably won't return.

Hunter Horne

Always enjoy this place for lunch. Just wish fish costed a little less and I would buy two orders lol

Kinzee Clark

Fun atmosphere with limited menu. The menu is small because it is good. Food served very hot and service was friendly. Want to come again next week even though I am a tourist!

Mari Goins

Always a lovely time for my mum, sister, and me. Really love the curry with the chips. Definitely a taste of home!

C. Levon Hucks

The best fish and chips in town. Always met with a friendly staff as well.

SHANE TOLA

Go to North Charleston for best fish & chips in Charleston area. Excellent selection of beers from the British isles and local breweries.

Maureen Cogan

Their tag line is "proper fish and chips," which is accurate. The menu is simple and easy: fish and chips (fries). It's just what you want fish and chips to be. Hot, crispy on the outside, and flaky on the inside. The portion was huge even though I ordered a half portion. You won't need to eat for the rest of the day. It seems popular with people who work nearby because it got crowded at noon. I would go there, too if I worked nearby.

Frederick Bellamy

It's about a authentic as it gets. Real Fish and Chips from a great restaurant. The ambiance it's relaxed and the staff is friendly. Not cheap, but worth every penny. It's fast, but not fast food.

Brittany Foster

Absolutely delicious and authentic! By far the best fish and chips I’ve ever had.

Conor James

No a large menu, but definitely some of the best fried fish in town. Fries aren't the best, but not bad. This is a great choice for a lunch after work.

Jay Mack

It was pretty crowded and the wait was about 20 mins after placing my order but the food was pretty good. If I want a taste for seafood again, this won't be a first choice, but I'll go back again eventually.

Meagan McCleary

Best fish and chips in Charleston! Crispy outside, flaky inside, cooked to perfection! If you are not a big eater go with the half portion or share a full with someone else. Be prepared to possibly wait in a line as it can get very busy. Line moves fast and will be worth the wait. Seating available inside and out.

Gail Mizuk

Proper fish and chips. I order to go.That's so it can cool off so I don't burn my tongue. Made to order. So good!

Orlando Smith

The best fried fish I have had in a long time. The fries were not the greatest which would be the only reason for not giving 5 stars. Honestly a 4.5 star place. The staff were friendly and helpful. I really enjoyed the hog roll as well. Tarter sauce was one of the best parts. Will go back for another piece of fish very soon.

Jacob Mustin

This is it. This is the fish and chips you've been looking for! You won't find the authentic, crispy, delicious fish anywhere on this side of the pond except here. If you know what a proper fish n chips is and have been searching for one, look no further. Can't give it enough praise. Big thumbs up.

Christie Suddreth-dunn

I was so excited about the food I forgot to snap pics of it. This is the best place in Charleston area to have fish and chips. Authentic as you can get without traveling to England. Brings back great memories. My only complaint would be how they run out of specialty items. Each time I have gone there has been items out of stock. Like meat pies, sausage rolls and mushy peas. But, the main thing for me is fish n chips and have never been disappointed here. Portions are perfect for the price point as well. My mother is from England and she approves and feels at home eating here. Please give a thumbs up if my review and or pictures were helpful to you. SMile!

Tiffany Sikes

It's definitely one of the best this side of the pond. Huge portions. I went with the half and that was too much. Definitely get some mushy peas to get your veggies in.

Lacey Rowe

AMAZING fish and chips!! Large portions and just so darn good!

will lewis

A friend of mine showed me this place. It was amazing, never had better fried fish before honestly. Also if you decide to get the fish and chips get a full baskit it's extremely filling but it's so good that it's almost mandatory

Eve Zuber

Awesome awesome awesome and more awesome fish and chips. It's all they do, and they do it well. Totally authentic British recipes. They even have mushy peas. The fish is fresh and moist and the breading is perfectly delicious and crisp. Their meat pies are nummy too. Atmosphere is simple and pleasant. They have outdoor and bar seating. They carry Magner's hard cider (dry and delicious British brand) on tap which is hard to come by. Really friendly and excellent service. Such a find, small, off the beaten path in North Charleston. I am a fish and chips afficianado (just kidding, but I am always looking for the "real" thing) and this is it! Authentic and delicious. Worth the drive from downtown Charleston. Heck, worth the drive from Raleigh NC! Go here, don't hesitate!

denny k

Fish and chips are great, with a really authentic British taste. The portions are large, and food is cooked as you order, so it is piping hot when you receive it. The only negative was the beer, which you order at the bar . I ordered two Murphy stouts ( 20 oz - English pint ) and the bill was a few cents under $16 , which I thought was quite expensive. However,I didn't let that stop me from enjoying the meal, and will definitely go back, I just won't drink a beer. In conclusion, great fish and chips ,with an authentic taste that could otherwise only be found in the UK.

Damon TAnderson

Better than California dreaming ...and cheaper no smoke and mirrors just fish and fries errday

Marnae Behlow

Stopped here because the name was just too Good! Good place for fish and chips. Sales tax here is 13% but portions are good and the tartar sauce is bomb!!!

Daniel Helton

This place has a simple menu done well. The fish is huge, the batter is light and the flavor is perfect! You get a healthy portion of fries as well. Definitely enough to share. The mushing peas were really good too. I'm a fan for sure.

Brenda Gaetke

Absolutely loved it! Best I’ve had. Exceeded all the great reviews. Batter crunchy and beautiful white fish with no grease.

C Soto

The true definition of gorgeous and proper fish & chips. Recently came home to VA and tried a fish and chips place and it was NOT the dreamy experience you all delivered!! Looks like I'll need to visit SC again!

Robert Reed

Service was great. Good selection of beer. Food was good with large portions. Tried one of everything on the menu. Fish was fresh and fries crispy. Wasn't too crazy about the meat pie or sausage roll. Good place all around though.

Heath Baker

It really hurts me to see people post bad reviews here! some people just are not cultured enough to handle a proper fish and chips! this is hands down THE BEST fish and chips i have ever had and i’ve been coming here since it opened! i give my props to the owner and the very friends staff! it’s a perfect location with many seats for outdoor eating and drinking! Games come on the tvs and seating at the bar too! excellent food, excellent quality, and excellent pricing.

Lynn Reeves

Great fish! I think you'd enjoy it.

joseph terry

Food was priced right, taste great, and the service was fine. If you like fish and chips, then you need to come here.

Joshua Thomas

Great big piece of fish for a good price. Enough for us to share even.

K Carla Wade

Wonderful. Great tasting food. The restaurant was packed full of locals sharing a meal together. Love that Spruill Ave is starting to become respectable. Got to meet the owner. Great, super nice guy. I'll be back!

Ron M

Still the best fish and chips around. Pure and true in taste and form. Beautiful sweet white cod and perfect crunch to the proper batter. One huge piece with chips is a meal. No one does it better. The new place is terrific too. Everyone there is smiling and enjoying themselves.

Graham Mew

We drove 4 hours to eat English cuisine fish n chips, curry sauce and a sausage roll with HP sauce washed down with a draught beer at the Codfather! Good food, sizable portions, selection of beers and friendly staff! Eat here every time we come to Charleston!

Krisalyn Komakech

Adam & Christopher rock & so do their fish, chips, pies & of course, selection of cold beers!

Ashley Henderson

Yes, I took the weekend off from my keto diet. I didn't fall off the wagon, I jumped off and landed in carbs with both feet. And it was delicious, starting with the late lunch that we had today at the CODfather.A proper chippie here, though they don't serve it wrapped in newspaper. Clean paper wrap and paper bowls, but food safety is important and so that's what we have to do.

Hans hinners

Fantastic fish and chips with imported curry sauce. Magner's cider and Guinness on tap.

Christopher Gilmore

This place is perfect. The limited menu means they do one or two things really well. The portions are very generous, and the quality of the fish is unmatched. This is a must try!

TJ

Great casual fish and chips restaurant, loved by locals and pretty unique among other lunch options in the area. The limited menu is nice and keeps things fast and simple; you’re there after all for fish and chips, right? Small bar adjacent to restaurant looks like a friendly place for a pint.

Johnny Morgan

Legit. Got to go! Get fish with Curry. Don't waste time on chips. Get 2 pieces of the fish. Friggin awesome!

Keisha Reid

Very disappointed! I would recommend a cheap fish filet sandwich from McDonald’s over this place. I get not everyone knows how to fry fish properly, but i would expect a place that only serves fish to have better tasting fish that’s fried to perfection. To mess up fish is one thing, but to not know how to fry French fries is just a disgrace. Judging by the response that the owner gave a previous unhappy customer, shows that her attitude is just as bad and NASTY as the soggy, tasteless fish!

Steve the Car Sales Guy

This little unknown Place turned out to be an absolute amazing find. I had a customer make the recommendation to go there and it absolutely did not disappoint. Food was great the beer selection was excellent it all turned out to be exactly what the doctor ordered go

Sue Butler

Went here while visiting my sister-in-law and was not dissapointed! We shared a whole portion fish and some mushy peas. That was for most people plenty of food! And the mushy peas were great! I recommend. The woman at the register who took my order was super friendly, I think she knew it was out first time. They don't have a waitstaff but they do deliver the food to your table. Overall, great food that in my opinion was greasy but not dripping in greasy leaving puddles, just perfect.

M.L. Anderson

100% legit fish & chips!! Best I've ever had in the States! Do yourself a favor, and check it out. You will NOT be disappointed.

Donna Walters

Rustic but wonderfully good fried cod and chips.

Thomas Evans

Had a large group here on a Sunday. We enjoyed the atmosphere and eating on the patio having a couple bloody Mary's. The food was delicious and the service was great, you serve yourself!

Tom Bradford

Fun. Beer and fish and chips. What's not to like??

Chelsea Celebi

Amazing batter, flaky filets, and the tarter sauce was awesome! Definitely worth a try and I hope to go back for the meat pie next time!

Gregory Eaton

Very good fish. Every bit as good as I had while living in England. Wife loved it also.

Rob Pearce

Fish and Chips were Great! The Mush Peas we're Wonderful, green peas mashed to like mash potatoes. Curry tangy, not spicy. Pie was Tasty.... little dry.....but dipped into the curry sauce...made it. Will be back!!

James McLovin

The food is always fresh and delicious. I wish I had a picture to show the quality and quantity of the food. Just come here!

Jeremiah Rees

This place is a great meeting place for lunch but tonight i took my wife and daughter and it wasn't the greatest atmosphere for them. Great people and good fish though

Clinton Bradley

Excellent food in casual setting. On Vacation beats chain restaurants hands down. Thanks

Java Galipeau

Terrible customer service. When I called to speak with a manager, he would not provide his name and hung up the phone instead of offering a better solution to the situation. I paid $24 with a tip and my order was wrong. He hung up in my face instead of knowing how to properly deliver customer service. I will not return to this establishment and nor will I recommend it to others.

Felicia Cole

I just love to grab a order of fish and fries at the CODfather! The fish portion is huge and you'll ask yourself "how will I ever finish this"? But you will, you'll finish every bit of this juicy and flavorful fish. Can't wait to get back to North Charleston so I can visit this place again.

Brandy Carr

The half fish and chips was delicious. I don't know what's in their tartar sauce but boy was it good. I like the new management.

Stephen Johnston

Authentic English fish & chips. Hot crispy fish. Chips are freshly cut, not frozen. Love the mushy peas! Order at the window and the food is delivered to your table. All you drink Pepsi machine and ice tea.

Lace Brady

Absolutely amazing fish and chips!! A must try when in the area!

Danielle Christine

I didn't get a chance to ask the bartender her name but she has purple hair right now. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with her. She was very attentive and provided every quick service.

Jennifer DeAngelo

Good food! The fried fish is laking in the flavor department but nonetheless I understand the hype about this place. Fries were everything that I did not know I needed. Oh, and that tartar sauce– oooweeeee! So good! I cannot speak for the bar but I will be back to try.

Deja The Warrior Goddess

Worst place ever for fish and chips! I honestly didn’t think any place could be worst than nasty Captain D’s, but to my surprise Cod father is. Anyone who appreciates and likes SEASONED food, I would suggest you not visit here, otherwise you will be extremely disappointed. Not only do they not season their soggy greasy fish and fries, but they also use old burnt cooking grease, which makes the unseasoned food taste even worst. The only people who would like this place, are the low budget captain d’s crowd, and those who are bad cooks themselves and never had REAL delicious southern and SEASONED fried fish!

Darrell Webb

Reasonable prices and really good food. Go early if you want one of their pies because they run out

Andrew Willetts

Awesome fish and chips. Not as good as the best you get in the UK, but certainly better than you'll find in your average gastropub in the USA. Note that not all chippies are equal in the UK either, so you can't expect perfection. Definitely recommend and would go back if in the area. Nice brew selection. Bar service was not stellar (sat there about five minutes before being served).

Terra Kinder

Everyone raves about this place and it is always extremely busy. Great if you need to be seen! The food was overly greasy but tasty.

Victoria Dixon

Delicious huge portion. I shared the fish and chips with my husband and we were stuffed. Quick friendly service too

Laura Groby

Food was very good. The size of my 1/2 order fish was a little small compared to others around me. I was surprised and disappointed no one in the cooking area was wearing any type of hair restraint One girls hair was hanging down around her face and another had black curly hair- she should have been wearing a hair net. Nothing worse than finding hair in your food!

Alicia Johnson

Love the fish and chips here. The owner is super cool and always around checking on his guests and how they are enjoying things. Staff at the counter are super efficient and fast paced. The bartenders always friendly and the overall vibe is just fantastic. Great food and people!! Authentic British fish, chips, mushy peas, and herb tarter sauce. Hugh portion and food cooked fresh to order for maximum crunch!! Building outside needs some work, but ignore that, food is great!!

kelly hollifield

This was pretty darn authentic British-style fish and chips. While I personally prefer the slightly less greasy California-style, these were still very good and what I would consider excellent for the style it represents.

Jeff Sample

You really can't do batter-fried fish any better. Perfectly crisp batter on a deliciously flaky and tender fillet. No mushiness to either. Fries home cut and crisp as well. Very busy but friendly and fast service. Someone will have to explain to me the utility of HP sauce though - tastes like raisin puree.

Jenny Cook

Fast and friendly service with huge, delicious portions. The batter for the fish was perfection--golden brown, crispy, not too sweet. I received a whole filet for the full portion and even with a large appetite, I was left with half the fish and fries after eating to my heart's content. I was also blown away by the delicious tartar sauce, made in house. Normally, I'm not a big fan of tartar but this stuff was amazing. I do enjoy some vinegar with my fish and chips and the one letdown of this whole experience was the watery vinegar. I felt like I was ruining my fish by using the vinegar on it.

Patrick C

It was ok. I give 4 stars for the food only. The person that took our order was nice but was questioned 3x about if we ordered, where we ordered.... I’m not sure why as she did not ask anyone else waiting for their food. Made me feel uncomfortable. Despite the food being good, best I’ve had away from the homeland, that experience with her will keep me from being back.

Shawna K

I finally got to check out the new location. Soooo happy they are now open on Sundays! It was packed at noon. Beyond yummy! Hot and delicious, need I say more? Adam delivered his new creation to our table ... deep fried bangers.

Stephanie Delano

The only reason I give it a 4 is because they have absolutely nothing on the menu for kids. It is 100% fish. I assumed they would have chicken fingers for my kids, he ate fries for dinner

Leah Collins

Always great food, fantastic service and a pleasure. Usually busy and packed to the "gills" during peak time, but it's a testament to the quality of food. We'll definitely keep coming back! Best proper fish and chips you'll get this side of the pond.

Edmund Lee

This is our first time at this location. Our son who lives in Charleston took me to the previous location and had to return to this restaurant. New location is bigger and a lot better. Food is still the same. It's the best fish fry. The service was excellent. Clean. Smooth ordering. Highly recommend. My mouth waters when I think of the fish fry here. Just great food. Fresh fish.

Lanie Dean

My half-portion fish and chips was delicious. Light, fluffy, really hot, crisp and delicious. We got a curry sauce to share and that would have been the highlight except the rest of the meal was also excellent. My wife (a Brit from Bristol) enjoyed her mushy peas. It's not fancy, but that's okay. We had an excellent meal and all were satisfied. Delicious!

Bonnie Johnson

The fish and chips are amazing! These are as good as my favorite in Broadford, Isle of Skye, Scotland. No lie. The place is a bit cramped but so what. Airfare to Charleston, SC is a lot cheaper than to Great Britain!

Steve Myslik

This is the quintessential place for fish and chips. As good as the best fish and chips in the UK that I've been to, and I've been to a few. Freshly made to order. And the size of the filet? Oh my gosh! It will fill you up. I can't wait to hit this place again. Dine inside at a table or booth or outside at one of the many picnic tables. They have a connected bar for a Guinness or a Tennant. Go!!!

Karen Karl

The fish and chips never disappoint but do yourself a favor and get a sausage roll. Hands down the best I've ever had!

Scott Lambert-Gorwyn

Codfather is proof that location and a huge menu selection doesn't matter. He started in a tiny place about 2 years ago in a part of town you wouldn't want to be in... The line was out the door all day, every day. The menu consists of fish...and chips. There's a good reason he has prospered: If you like fish and chips, you simply won't find better. And with the new little pub he recently opened off to the side of the main dining room, you can get a pint of Guinness or Murphy's Irish stout with your Fish and Chips. What could be better?!

Jake Wright

These were definitely the best fish+chips of my life! Portions so enormous I couldn’t even finish mine (and that’s a rarity for me!). I will definitely be back just ordering the half portion :)

John McAllister

Nice selection of local craft brews and also Boddingtons was on draft. The food is by far the best fish and chips I have ever had- definitely since London and maybe even better than there. A full order would be for a very hungry big eater. This all the make with just a few other "British" sides and they do it very well. Don't miss it!

jacob smoyer

Great food! Fried just right and tray of fries. Cant complain and I will come again!

Charles McKinnis

Excellent fish and chips (french fries), and friendly staff.

Patrick Duncan

World famous for terrible fish and chips. Soggy fries, soggy fish, no hot sauce, super greasy. Unless you have no teeth and are super hung over this place is horrible.

Chester Hollingsworth

Large fish and crispy chips to seal the deal. I was told this was the spot for good cod, and they were right. I smiled from the time I pulled into the parking lot and when I pulled out. Luckily we got there before th the lunch time rush. The colorful staff was just as friendly as they were fast. That southern hospitality is welcoming. Two thumbs up. Say hello to Kate for me when you get there. Everyone was eager to share information about the menu so it wasn't hard to figure what I was getting. Love it.

Shelly W

Really good! Food came out hot and very fast. Staff was very friendly. We went with children and were advised on which portion size would be good for the kids. Will definitely go back!

Ken C

I love finding hidden gems of a restaurant like the CODfather. Forget the chains and go local. This place is great. Quick, friendly, helpful service focused on one thing; good codfish. This place is worth a stop. I recommend the whole order not the half order.

Deb D

Being in the tourism field for Charleston I had heard many good things about this place and was looking forward to trying it which I did yesterday. I understand this is a new location that's easier to find I really I think it is a neat place. Got the fish and chips the fish was wonderful a little darker crust than the Golden crust I expected but still good. The chips though should be listed just as fries and not so crispy. I was expecting something like the English chip that actually looks like a ruffled potato chip. The tartar and curry sauce we're really good. The mushy peas were too bland for my personal taste on their own however spread over the fish with some sauce added to the flavor . They were out of the gravy they were also out of the sausage roll which I will get back in the future and try. I do recommend this place to anyone who likes this mom-and-pop neighborhood laid back cool atmosphere and overall good food.

FISH CRUNCH, THE EQUALIZER OF FRESHLY COOKED AND MAXIMUM VALUE. The lunch break was worth the time. Nice atmosphere, definitely go back for more. I hate it when fish is seasoned, this place leaves it up to the fish to be proper for your tastebuds. The fries are definitely a good add but, did not make me want more.

Love the Fish and Chips here! The pies are subpar and don't seem worth it for the same price as the cod. Nice bar on the side of the restaurant too! Good place to catch soccer/football or have lunch away from work.

Kim Burgin

THE most amazing fish & chips this side of the pond! Laid back atmosphere and interesting presentation make it fun. Reasonably priced & a MUST if you're in Charleston. WARNING: You'll never want fish & chips anywhere else!

Mike Diamond

There was a wait, but it was worth it. Fish was really good. Fresh out of the fryer. The fries (chips) were pretty plain. More than enough for one person. Tarter sauce was also a treat. Everyone ran out with the large fish.

Good food and atmosphere. Unfortunately, because they are so popular, it also takes a little while to get your food. Not a place to go if you're in a hurry.

Friday was our 1st time here. We arrived around 7:15 p.m. There was no room inside but plenty of room outside. They have the very best fish & chips we have had in a very long time, maybe ever! We are part of the Friday Fish Eaters and will be making this our go-to place every Friday we eat out. How can you grow tired of excellent food. This is truly a 5 star restaurant. Thanks for the great food.

Fantastic English fish N chips, my mom is a Brummy and loves it along with me!

Jeremy Adams

Great dead honestly good fish and chips place. Parking on site leaves a bit to be desired but the food is worth all of it. Staff are friendly and portions are more than generous.

James Knox

Authentic fish and chips right here! Fried to perfection. If you haven't been, get there! No plates, you use plastic ware and you wont miss it.

First time visiting the new location and I'm in love! The same amazing fish and chips but know with more menu options! Love CodFather and I promise you it's completely worth any wait you might be up against. The food is fresh to order and that's worth a wait IMO! Love the new digs, extra parking, etc!

The fish and chips were outstanding. Been many years since I have some as good as this is.

I have been here twice now and wasn't a big fan either time. The fried fish doesn't taste like it's been seasoned at all. It's very bland without the sauces. I'm actually a huge fan of the tartar sauce here. It's extremely good. The fries were a little soggy, but not really bad or good. They were decent. Service is good, they're pretty nice. 3 stars only because of the sauce

The only place around Charleston with authentic fish and chips and housemade pies. They also have a great beer selection including my two faves (Fullers ESB and Boddingtons). Nice outside eating area when it's not too hot. PS Don't forget the mushy peas!

This was our 1st time going to the new location and it was wonderful. Plenty of seating. The food was delicious with huge portions. The mushy peas and curry sauce which we had not had before were delicious! Can't wait to go back again. I highly recommend this place if you like fish-and-chips.

I just love to grab a order of fish and fries at the CODfather! The fish portion is huge and you'll ask yourself "how will I ever finish this"? But you will, you'll finish every bit of this juicy and flavorful fish. Can't wait to get back to North Charleston so I can visit this place again.

I've been going here for years. Prices have gone up a little bit but still amazing food and easily beat the other chip shops in the surrounding areas. The competition isn't even close. They moved a few years ago to this location and now have a small pub area and are working on building a patio. The chips may be the best in town but aren't the best I've had (large and fluffy but not crispy). The fish is huge, fresh, and lightly fried. Their tartar sauce is a bit thinner than some may be used to but I prefer it that way. The mushy peas are a must try. Don't sleep on the potato and leek pie if they have some left, they go quickly.

I'm British. I know fish and chips. The Codfather has the most authentic, proper English fish and chips in the South East. Cheers!

Wanted to try this place for a long time and made the attempt Wednesday. Parking lot seemed full. There were a few tables outside with patrons enjoying a wonderful mid-seventies February afternoon. I stepped inside and was shocked to see the place jammed packed with no inside table available and folks waiting in a long line to place their orders. At my age (old), I cannot stand in line waiting on food...so reluctantly, I left. But if you have the time and energy...it's got to be good!

Bert Shetler

Truly proper fish & chips. Complete with mushy peas and HP sauce! Excellent!

Toni Knight

Great fish and chips. Nice friendly staff. Price for the food was very affordable. I was a little surprised to find out they charge a to go fee

bill bladykas

Best fish and chips west of London. Nothing fancy not even cole slaw. Great value and worth the trip

This is the real deal fish and chips, as if you were in England or Ireland. Very fresh and also huge - be sure to go when you are really hungry. I ordered the half fish and chips and the sandwich was so big, I was unable to finish it. They have seating for large parties, but you may have a wait. Grab a pint on the bar side while you wait - it's certainly worth the wait.

Heard about the Codfather from my parents and just had to come. I was not disappointed! Huge pieces of Cod cooked perfectly. Malt vinegar on the table and their own special tarter sauce made me a fan. Next visit I will venture past the fish n chips and try the other menu items!

Jo Anne Carpenter

Love this place. I think that it is as close to the fish and chip flavors of England as you can get. Such a treat!!!

Nicholas Harris

The restaurant is nice and the staff is great. I got the specialty (fish and chips) and was totally underwhelmed with it, though. It didn't have very much flavor. The chips weren't salted, which is cool, but even with plenty of added salt they were still just okay. Nothing was bad, it just wasn't great.

never been before. pleasantly surprise. we arrived at closing and they were happy to allow us to order. no attitude or bad words. the fesh is plentiful and the fries are way too much. price seemed high to me, but wife felt it was fair and reasonable

Went on saturday and it was busy but comfortable. Sat outside it was beautiful. Food was great. They have a great location on spruill ave so they are easy to find and it is much bigger. Big parking lot. Fish was great. Curry sauce was excellent. My old navy buddies would be surprised at the transition of the place they frequented in the 70S and 80s to the family oriented establishment it is today
