Sat at the bar and Bruce was amazing! Fabulous service & fabulous food. He's the reason we will be back. ♡

Leslie

Started with wonderful bar service. Continued with amazing service and food. Don't go and not order the mussels!! This is our "go to" for celebrations and pre- show meets for the Music Hall. You can't go wrong.

Stephen Duncan

I think the atmosphere is good and it is very convenient for King St and Charleston Music Hall. However, for me the food is relatively mediocre. I love bistro food and every time I go I have high expectations, but come away disappointed. It's not bad, but could easily be so much better.

John Haynes

Casual atmosphere, interesting decor. Extensive menu selections and good food. Recommended.

Jerome Brinkley

Great Bastille Day experience.

Dennis Montes de oca

The waitress very helpful and the food delicious

William Anderson

Must see and do! Excellent food and the menu has a wide variety. Our service was next to perfect. All our meals were prepared perfectly. The only negative was how loud it is. But it is an old building with great charm. Will go again.

Ben James

The scallops were perfectly prepared, served in a delicious sauce. Although it was late and the restaurant was full, the service was excellent.

Becca Hodges

"Rue" is ALWAYS GREAT! THE VERY BEST BURGER ON PLANET EARTH ..how ciuld a burger made with smoked sirloin NOT be great?! And, the generous side of French Pomme Frites cooked to perfection... Try any & everything and you will walk away wanting to go back soon !

Janie Mullis

Wonderful food wonderful staff & wonderful time had by all!

doug miley

Normally I'd give 4 or 5 stars, but tonight I suffered very slow service, overly salted and cold food. I'll give it another go, but this may be the start of a decline in overall business practices. Weak.

Francis Hodges

Very good though my quiche was perhaps a little too cheesy Entrees on earlier visits have been superb

Steve Wang

Good food

Britt Scott

Rue de Jean is a Charleston original Hangout! They have amazing soups. The service can be slightly slow at times but other than that an excellent experience that everyone should try.

Clive m Jones

Excellent food and very friendly and excellent service. My wife enjoyed the onion soup and I enjoyed a delicious dish of escargot and croquet missoure. Very enjoyable. Would go back again next time in Charleston.

Fiona de la Motte

We sat down for lunch on the deck and a local couple urged us to try the mussels. We did and they were amazing! Along with a baguette and a bottle of rosé, it was the perfect meal. And the service was very quick and friendly as well.

Renee Ray

The mussels and fried brussel sprouts were divine.

Ally Blanco

I love 39 rue. It's one of my favorite places. Tonight, the food was amazing, per the usual, BUT being sat next to the wrong people can really ruin a meal. We were seated next to not 1 but 2 obnoxious tables that just kept trying to outdo …

Christopher Wheeler

Dinner reservation was for 9:15 but we showed up 20 minutes early and they seated us right away in a cozy spot near the windows. +1 The waitress was a little cold in the beginning, possibly because she was tired or something, but she eventually warmed up. Food was excellent. The sushi is some of the best in the Southeast. Meats were perfection. We ordered the braised beef and the filet. The espresso martinis were strong. Waitress wasn't attentive and the drinks took longer than expected. However, we will certainly be back.

Eric Benton

Pretty good food. Cool building and location. Our server was great, but the supporting staff wasn't. Worth a shot.

Chaz Shanton

One of my favorite Charleston restaurants. Just classic fine dining in every way

Chris Rogers

Really good food and service.

Elizabeth Noble

Was great as usual. We are just not close enough to come often. Food and drink were delicious and gracefully and southernly served. And on 8th of February, it was 75 degrees. What's more to ask?

Anne Holloway

Great food

Tom Schnurr

Really good food. The French onion soup is top notch

Michael D. McMullen

Four of us met for dinner at Rue de Jean because it was the first recommendation two of my friends made when I asked where to dine before a show in the Holy City. They were right. This was the best meal I have had in a long time. The …

Wesley Ferguson

One of my long time favorites, amazing food, lots of variety on this delicious menu. I recommend trying the muscles with any of the 4-6 sauces for an appetizer. Steak and fries keepe coming back....and if you decide on sushi, they have that too.

Stephen Cohen

great atmosphere and great food

michael arnett

Duck was not very good, why is it served with nasty beans? Decent mussels saved the rating

Steven Weronik

Cookie is the best bar tender ever, so fun!

Christopher Louviere

Always fantastic! Sit outside one evening and enjoy a bottle of Rose! You'll thank yourself later.

Ron Snyder

We had the absolute pleasure of having our wedding reception at the Upstairs at 39 Rue de Jean. Tristan and her team put the decorations, floor plan, menu, and overall experience for our guests together superbly. The food, service and experience: FANTASTIC. Any questions we had for Tristan leading up to our big day were answered promptly and professionally. Whether you are looking to host a once in a lifetime event or just wanting a delicious meal for the evening, 39 Rue de Jean will make any occasion memorable.

The manager allowed us to dine for lunch as if it was almost an imposition for us to sit at one of several empty tables. Did not feel welcomed by him. Our waitress, Gwendolyn, was pleasant and efficient. I ordered the moules pousin. Garlic, basil and white wine broth. They were excellent. The house white wine was too minerally for my taste, so a glass of pinot gris was substituted. Made me happy. The turkey and avocado was piled thickly on toasted bread. My wife could only eat 1/2 the sandwich which came with thin fries that were skin on and ok. The French onion soup and toasted cheese sandwich was judged to be very good by pour friends. Food was good. The host seemed a little full of himself.

john ambrosnino

An amazing atmosphere, the food was spectacular while visiting, our server Aaron provided great service, with a smile and a welcoming attitude that really was the cherry on the top for the entire experience. We will definitely return to try other things on the menu.

Ariana Nazario

Good food. Great service. Yummy fries and creme brulee. Walking distance to Charleston Museum. Definitely a place to visit if you like great food and enjoy a nice ambience.

Jarrod Reed

Incredible menu, food, wait staff, and atmosphere. Took a rather large company group here and everyone was extremely accommodating and the food was some of the best I’ve ever had! I’d highly recommend the rabbit, and don’t skip on the dessert menu! Thank you all for such a great night!

Joel Johnson

Came here for lunch with our 2 year old after visiting the children's museum. It's right down the alley and across the street. Good menu with mix of seafood, sushi, French, American foods. Kids menu had about 6 items including cheesy cream …

Sophia Zimmermann

Step across the Seine to Paris via John Street

Meghan Burchfield

One of my favorites.

Tellya Later

Nice atmosphere Bartender ERIC was Phenomenal, a true MIXOLOGIST!!! This is the place to go when visiting Charleston!

Casey Salvador

I was here once a few years ago. I remember having the rabbit dish which was very good. Definitely lean and creamy which paired well with white wine.

Jennifer Barge

Great food, wonderful service and amazing staff. Amazing dirty martinis!!!

Sarah Brunson

The bouillabaisse was rather seafood poor, and the sauce was a little too thick. Food was brought out very quickly - before we had decided on the wine, even. Dessert (a merangue ice-cream concoction) was good. Without it, we would have left hungry.

Daniel Lovelady

We were recommend this restaurant by our B&B host who said that they were known for cooking mussels in 6 different ways. We tried the first broth, the name of which escapes me, and it was my wife's favorite dish of the evening. I tried the Beef Tartare, which sounded strange since its raw beef, but it's actually quite good, and I recommend it. We went on a Monday night and had no wait, but I imagine that reservations would be a good idea if you were going for a weekend meal. Servers and staff were bustling with orders and getting things done, but our server, Chris, never made my wife or I feel rushed. He was very prompt with his service, kept us in the loop regarding the progress if our dishes, and made a few French translations for us. Overall a very good experience, and while we are only touring Charleston, I plan to recommend it to anyone that happens to be in the area.

Lisa Hancock

I had heard the food here was excellent so I was very excited to try it. My meal began with the soup of the day which was very good, served with homemade bread. I ordered the roasted duck with mashed potatoes and green beans and was very disappointed. The duck was extremely salty, the potatoes were runny and the green beans were not fresh. The atmosphere was nice but my table was close to another that I could have set with them. The waitress was nice and maybe I should have gotten her recommendation but I didn't. Unfortunately, I will not waste my money again.

Jenna Steingress

Best restaurant in town! ♡

Nate Emmett

Reasonably priced, lunch portion was on the smaller side.

Erica C

Fantastic food. Would highly recommend. Get the vacherin for dessert!

Muffi Brinson

Great food. Michael took great care of us at the bar.

Carol Isaac MacKusick

Good food. Not for everyone.

Jason Punda

Good food in a rustic French styled bistro, right off of King St.

Lisa Söderstedt

Ok place. Took a little to long to be served but the food was really good.

william schofield

5 stars all the way

Kali Freeland

Maybe the best meal I've ever had. Do yourself a favor and eat here! Stellar service, incredible atmosphere, and OUT OF THIS WORLD food!

Charles Tollison

Heard this was the place if you liked mussels, and all of the recommendations were on par. Went there for lunch and we were hooked on the ambiance. Service was attentive and awesome. Waiting to check it out for dinner... we're sure we won't be disappointed.

Svein Borgersen

The mussels are the best ever!

B Luke

If you like being packed in like sardines, then this place is for you. couldn't even wait for the server

David Roule

The atmosphere was good and the food was good enjoy yourselves

Allie Moreland

Food was really good. I got the chicken francaise and my husband got the duck, which had lots of Canellini beans. The portions were large. I did not care for the house red, probably a cheap Cabernet. Atmosphere was not what I expected. Looking at location, menu, and prices I assumed it would be fancy/romantic, but it was really laid back...Disco was blaring. We were seated at a long table/booth uncomfortably close to a pair of typical Charleston bachelors having typical Charleston bachelor conversation, which was odd since the restaurant had plenty of open tables, but when we asked to scoot down one, our request was accomodated with no issue.

Sean Rivinus

Absolutely delightful. My wife and I came down for the weekend and this was the first of two French (ish) places we checked out. The food was very tasty. My wife had fish and I had a a beef dish.. The wine list was pretty extensive which …

Mackenzie Thweatt

Kristen was a great server. The menu was huge but both my wife and i were happy with our decisions. I don't think you could go wrong here!

Bob Wells

Mussels were fantastic. Drew the bartender was exceptionally friendly and knowledgeable.

Leann Collins

We love this place it’s on a side alley shaded and cool puppy friendly outside. We had blue cheese and bacon and Steak Tartare on arugula salads. And Frisée Lyonaise. The mussels sauce was so good we put it on the other two dishes. Brooke was an awesome server We had A 2yr old baby and 2yr old puppy. Will definitely be back again!

Leslie Vanderheyden

Went for Easter brunch here. Delicious food in a cool atmosphere. Service was a bit slow but it looked like they were short-staffed. Would definitely come back again.

Oliver Levenson

Great events, Great weather, most entertaining place. Me and my brother attended a function, everything was superb. We had an amzing experience here.Thank You!!!!

Joshua Scruggs

Tiffany took great care of us at the bar!

Eliot Darlington

Great food, atmosphere and service..French onion soup a must

James Quigley

Great food and atmosphere. Little pricey but worth it.

Katherine P

Delicious mussels! Waitress didn't bring my salad as requested (without dressing) but otherwise lunch was fine.

Luna Tic

Service was soooo slow, took 70 min. To get our food. Food was good but my steak was cold. I was so disappointed with my wine. I'm not a wine connoisseur but I do know when the bottle has been opened for days. Granted, it's a busy weekend but this restaurant has been here for years and should be professional by now and know how to plan better.

Lena Kulchytska

Best lamb! Great food and service

Kyle Lenton

Everyone had a great meal, steak, rabbit and salmon. Fabulous desserts and great service. Price was reasonable too. Recommended!

Adelaide Jones

delightful!!! my husband and i shared the pork chop and it was delicious! They were kind, and actually halved it for us I think, before they prepared it... so it was a little drier then i think it would have been if we had just ordered one …

James Nguyen

Great French food AND sushi. We had the chef sushi platter, pork chop, and truffle fries. Came in close to closing and sat the bar. Mike at the bar was awesome to talk to.

Mel Worley

Best mussels in Charleston!!

JJ Massey

If the fun decor of this restaurant doesn't catch your attention, the food definitely will. We had whiskey peach crepes and bacon. Those crepes were incredible! Soft, flavor filled and light, I have never had crepes so delicious! We are ready to go back again.

Chris Hayes

Great food, nice atmosphere, amazing service!

Adam H

Exceptional French onion soup and the best gnocchi on this side of the Mississippi.

Bernice Slezak

Always great. That's why we come back. Our favorite place to bring out of Towner.

Lynnette Nash

We came in between the Lunch and the Dinner time and had to choose off the short menu. It was excellent. We were both extremely pleased with the food and will recommend it to our friends traveling in the area.

Casey Derieux

Friendly staff, but the food seems a little pricey for the value.

Jake Enloe

Showed up on a busy night without a reservation like a moron. They fit us in immediately and hospitably. Then I asked the waitress to define literally every item on the menu, and she did so happily. Lastly, the food blew me away. Give these people your business, they deserve it.

Denise Pfaff

Two of us ordered the house wines a Cabernet and a pino noir. It was poured from the bottle into a measured cup into our glass. Every bit of an inch of the worst wine we ever tasted. For $2.99 at Trader Joe's you can get a much better wine. Then we were told there was no dessert that day. We were enjoying our company having just come from the Symphony Designer Showhouse. Looking forward to to a nice lunch. We waited an hour and a half before being served an ok meal. None of the 4 of us would ever go back The one positive was a darling young server who told us he was new there.

Natanya Miller

Always consistently delicious. You can’t go wrong.

Dennis Bigler

Initially thought it was ok, but late that day and all night my wife was very sick with diarrhea and stomach pains. Pretty sure I'd was good poisoning., She had nothing else prior that would cause. Very disappointed.

Kimberlee English

Started with foie gars, delicious , one dish rabbit one dish filet, cooked perfectly, bottle of wine and split creme brulee. Very happy with our meal. Our dogs sat outside with us. They brought a dish of water for them. Wish there was a doggie menu

AR Brady

Solid place, attentive staff and management, good food selection, high quality food, nice bar

Jennifer Gilardi Velonis

It's always great! Try to save room for dessert!

Delia Voronca

Great food, nice outside patio!

David Holt

I wanted to like this place, but was disappointed. The ambience is nothing great. Very few private booths or even private tables. Long tables, open seating, hard chairs, crowded. All you really see is other people. My fiance wanted a booth, and we told the hostess we'd be happy to wait. We did, then we watched as she sat people at two booths. When we asked, she said those tables are reserved for 4 people. You'll have to sit in the tiny 2 seat booths in the bar area, which we could have sat in when we arrived, if the tables had been clean, but they were not. So basically, we were there well over an hour on a slow Sunday night, nursed two drinks, and left. We did not stay to try the food.

Randy Riley

Horrible experience. Had 6 people and less than half the restaurant was empty. They would not put tables together to seat us. Son and his family live in Charleston. Probably not going there again.

Victoria Davich

Eat 3 courses here, you won't regret it! The chocolate bomb was probably the next dessert I've ever had, I'll be along for it on my next bday. Rustic looking venue as it's a remodeled building from way back.

Christopher Hart

Food and service was phenomenal, they are definitely a top notch restaurant.

Mary Ann Burgeson

Always superb! Their quiche is wonderful and like no other. Very French and lovely.

Michael Glassman

I have been to the restaurant twice both times for lunch. I got the mussels both times since they were so good the first time. The service is excellent and the atmosphere is great.

Andrew Mosso

All the French bistro standards are on the menu and the ones we had were very good. Service was professional.

stuart richman

I was there once six years ago and ate in the bar area and had cocktails and selections from the appetizers section of the menu. I thought the food was excellent with reasonable prices for the size of the portions. The service was prompt and my server was courteous and professional. Would recommend it to anyone else

Joshua Johnson

Atmosphere, customer service, and the food where astronomical! Definitely one of my favorite places to eat at while I was in Charloteston. I would definitely recommend eating here!

Ryan

A great French cafe. One of my favorite spots to have lunch in the city. I almost always get the beet-cured salmon. It comes with goat cheese on fresh bread with a side of lentil and beet salad and a green salad.

thomas lewis

Excellent food and service

Karen Burkette

Have always loved this place. Spent a ton of money, had terrible service, food was cold, then clearly microwaved to warm up, no one working cared. Will not recommend or go back!. Formerly a favorite of a large local group

Google User

Service was stupendous. Cusine was fabulous. Wine was perfect. Great dining experience.

Alexia Pittas

Fantastic service by Chris with delicious food and superior wine pairings.

Joshua McDonald

Outstanding! Always a highlight of my visits to Savannah.

Christopher Bottorff

Great Lunch experience...a little expensive.. I guess you pay for what you get...quality.

Daniel J. Hunter

20190919 Visit. Started off with a delicious super Jumbo SHRIMP COCKTAIL and the Cocktail Sauce came with a touch of a kick it does not come with elsewhere. Then came the 10oz Brasserie BURGER with Lettuce, Tomatoes, grilled onions, choice …

Daniel R. Warrenfeltz

My wife and I enjoyed an excellent meal today. The food was well prepared and our waiter Joel was attentive and on point. Desert topped off our meal. This was definitely a 10 in every aspect of food, service and ambience. I highly recommend this restaurant! Dan and Susan.

Jersey Devils

We've only been here for brunch but it's fantastic. The crab cake poached eggs breakfast is amazing. Great service and great location.

Shannon Hudson

Our server, Eric, was great. He suggested the chicken francaise and it was really good. Don't expect a fast paced dinning experience. Dining here is similar to how the French dine, the food is to be savored and your company to be enjoyed.

Tricia Croce Fazzari

We come here for Sunday brunch every time we come to Charleston. We enjoy the patio and the beautiful scenery and the food. This trip was very disappointing as far as the food. My omelet was tasteless. My son's breakfast sandwich burned. The table bread is the best.

Peter Straight

Ate here a couple times as a special treat. Very good both times! Prices are a bit high but reasonable and expected for an upscale restaurant with great quality food. Will visit again!

Jessica Tanner

This is our favorite spot for Sunday brunch. Get the large portion of mussels and extra bread- SO good! Everything is fabulous, especially the Charleston Eggs Benedict with crab cakes and asparagus. This will be your new brunch go-to location!

RICK NIELSON

All I say is all their food is great

Shannon Forney

Visited 4/27, could not handle our reservation of 12, we all had to share 6 menus, our waiter was rude and not friendly (not sure if I saw him smile once) Waiter was trying to get us to upgrade appetizers and drink selections all night, which is fine to do, but not so blunt as to the only reason was to increase his tip as the 18% gratuity was included on our checks. Only reason I gave 3 stars is because the food was delicious and hot, not a single person disliked their meal at the table. The chocolate espresso martini was also very good, however one was served spilling down the sides all over the glass and side plate, no apology or help cleaning the mess. Come for the food, but not the service.

Jules McMillan

Great dinner, even better service.

gretchen hayes

Soooo good!!!

Amanda Williams

Our hostess upon greeting us - walked away without saying a word - we would come to find she had found us a table and literally expected us to read her mind. Our server Mollie seemed great in the beginning and than disappeared. We ordered …

Ashby Floyd Jr.

Great food and perfect spot for couple drinks before shows at Charleston Music Hall

Steve Frank

Wonderful menu, service, and wine--a bit of France in the SC Low Country. Great experience!

Richard Scott

Excellent food! If you go there you must try the escargot!!!!!! My only complaint is that it was very noisy.

Jeff Aquino

Beautiful spot, nice service. Food was ok, parking was terrible and no valet service.

King Gudako

Quality French cuisine at a reasonable price

George Summerford

French onion soup is the best I have had. Excellent ambience and service.

B Crafty

Absolutely delicious lunch selections. The French onion soup was beyond good and the server was so wonderful and friendly. Very popular so recommend hitting before a normal rush hour or I could imagine there would be quite a wait.

Joseph Smith

A pleasant suprise

george wilewicz

Good ambiance but a bit too loud for our taste. The steak au poivre was just too overpowering even for someone preferring a spice dish. Cut down on pepper and concentrate on the star of the dish the steak.

Bill Shocklee

On 3/31/18 they did not honor a longstanding reservation. We have been frequently visiting and dining In Charleston for 35-yrs. There are many great restaurants in Charleston. We suggest you dine at one of them instead of this place.

Brandy Roper

Very nice private area for functions with attentive staff. Food was great!! Wine pairing was good. Love the area and atmosphere.

M.H. B.

A Charleston staple. Solid go-to for brunch (or any other meal, for that matter). Service is always good, and the menu is great.

Matt Longley

Great sushi

Lisa Hill

Always excellent service and quality of food.

James Norment

Excellent menu and service

John Miller

Excellent fresh bread. Excellent cocktails. Prompt attentive service. Meal was very good and well-portioned. Highly recommended for a couple's dinner. Tips: Be sure to make a reservation and grab an appetizer.

Beki Adkins

Easy, delicious

Bill Gadol

This is one of my go-to spots in Charleston. The atmosphere feels alive, the food is exceptional (get the muscles with the vegetable cream sauce), and the service is excellent. Bartender Cookie is a mainstay and an excellent mixologist. I'd …

Joe Orlando

Great food... Great service.

Jason Farino

My wife and I came to eat at this restaurant and when we came in no one greeted us at all. The staff totally ignored us as we stood there for 10 minutes. We finally went to the bartender to order food and they gave us menus. No one waited on us at all and we had to continue going back and forth from our table to the bar to order food, drinks and get refills. Maybe it was just an off night? We will not be coming back

John Aller

Don't like this place. over priced, terrible service and lame menu
