Chicken sandwich was pretty good. But clam chowder soup was not up to expectations. Even though it's RI style soup, the server didn't set the expectations. Plus it didn't taste good. The drink ordered arrived almost when I finished lunch and probably server forgot to place an order but said bartender is busy even though the place was practically empty. It's an oldest tavern in the country but doesn't really justify the prices for the quality of food and service.
We liked how convenient this place was to river riders but man the food at this place was terrible. This is the kind of place that would be featured on Chef Ramsey's Hells Kitchen- the kind of place that requires proper overhaul. The only reason I am giving this place a 3 star is because of the host who waited on us. The flat bread pizza we ordered was a piece of burnt rock-hard stale pitta bread. They had literally added spoonful of sauce on top with pieces cheese on top. The appetizer we ordered was supposed to be Crab. It was French fries with a thin layer of weird sauce on top that tasted like tartar sauce. I know the place is cheap but if you are showing the place to a friend visiting from out of country or out of tow , you may want to look into maybe other place that take restaurant business seriously. Hell you may ever get better food at a chain fast food restaurant and save some bucks.
What a wonderful experience and such a huge part of RI history, you must definitely wander into this beautiful place, built in 1673...exquisite surroundings, fireplaces in all rooms and terrific menu, with a renowned wait staff that is superb...can't wait to go back..
Great service, good food.
Amazing food and Dominic was a fantastic host
The service and food was great! We had a party of 9 and they didn't bat an eye.
White Horse is one of our new favorites. Our server Gabriel has always taken great care of us.
Lovely old place atmospheric but sad no beer on... Only cans but we'll worth a visit x
Wonderful old pub. Cozy place. Good food. Good service.
Outstanding good, service and atmosphere!
Surprisingly tasty meal in a hotel restaurant. I'd recommend for a meal when in Harpers Ferry. Having parking is a bonus.
Historic place, food was just ok...
Not bad but not up to par with the prices.
Service was excellent. Really good food and drink menu
Great place, outstanding food and service.
Great service and Crabcakes. Our server Stephanie was Great! We will definitely return.
The oldest restaurant in the United States. The little table was George Washington's favorite!
The service was great, and I believe the food was pretty goox.
Actually really nice place, good beer selection and the food was great. Service was fast. They have a nice bar, high table and normal table seating. Great views of the many TVs. Convenient parking also.
Classic old New England Tavern with top notch service and food. Tends toward somewhat formal (I was asked to take off my ball cap before being seated
Food was good. Had a steak and it was good. Good atmosphere.
My friend and I visited last Wednesday just as they opened. Great atmosphere, and food. She had the French dip, me, the chicken quesadilla. Both very very good. Although they were experiencing a malfunction with their credit card machine at that time, the bar keep AND the manager made sure we had a detailed slip, before leaving with the assurance that all would turnout fine, which it did. Wish a place of this caliber we're nearer, I'd visit often. Would love to have dinner there some evening, it would be worth the hours drive. Thanks guys, well done
A great big thanks to our waiter Jack, who got is off to our boat before the rain. Super wait staff!
Absolutely the best place for a burger! Little loud for my liking but it's kinda like a sports bar so expected. The mixed drinks are very good.
We stopped by the White Horse Tavern while on a road trip. We thought the food was very good along with friendly service. We now know a good restaurant to go to when in Harper's Ferry.
Great building with a lot of history, but food and service is average!
Friendly and quick service
Food was great. We had crab cakes, chicken Chesapeake and pull pork. Next Saturday we are going to try the prime Rib special can't wait.
Awesome place to eat and the bartender was great
Friendly staff plus good food. Thumbs up.
Good soup and salad. As much as you want with great taste
Hotel bar, generic drinks, nothing special. Has a big name for not having alot
I love the food here! Such an amazing historic place and the oldest pub in America makes this a must see if your in Newport!! Service has been great every time I've been and the food never disappoints.
Very family friendly. Service was excellent. The gentleman was pleasant to talk to. Food was great. Had their cream of crab soup it had big chunks of back fin. Wings were very good. Kids loved their meals. Chicken tenders were real chicken. Clean inviting atmosphere and decent beer.
Good food, interesting neighborhood place.
Historically America's Oldest Tavern...Try the Legendary Dark-n-Stormy!!!
Had a great time
Sorry for the late review. Was here three days ago. The White horse is not only a extremely historical place but has amazing food, service and drinks. For the price every detail was perfect and amazing. On this trip I had the Wellington, bread pudding, winter squash, destiguishted gentleman, and European tour. Every dish was prepared to perfection. The pudding was hot and not soggy the top perfect with crunch. The squash was delicately cooked to perfection. Every bite of Wellington was not only tender but juicy and delicious. In my opinion this is a must go to if you are any wear near Newport Beach. Pack your business casual attire and call for your reservation. As this food was so carefully prepared it meets the definition of cooking. Well prepared to the point of loving what you cook. It has been a long time since I've encountered food so we'll prepared that every bit is so we'll cooked it is light and not heavy to eat.
Great food. Slow and off service.
Wife and I ate brunch there Sunday. Had to sit in the bar room because I was shamelessly without a collared shirt (was wearing a new, nice sweater). We had called first so we knew before arrival. Had brioche lobster salad and bacon sandwich. Wife had brussel sprouts and salad. All items were tasty, fresh and good. Bar man Brian was kind and attentive, and had the charms of the room. Neat old place, been in existence since like 1680. Worth a trip, esp. for you collar-sporting men. Recommended.
Ate at the bar. Nice selection of local beers. Bartender was friendly and quick. The burger was right on the spot. Highly recommend going in to the bar.
Service was very slow.french cold. By the time .i got new ones my meal was done. Took over 15 mins. To get our desert.
Service was great, food was not... Chicken smelled foul and the pasta dish “with chicken” had NO CHICKEN”
Incredible service, fabulous food
This place is literally incredible. I love history making this a special place already. They have some wonderful art work as well. The food is amazing. I've been numerous times throughout the year and haven't had a bad meal. They do serve burgers as well. But through all my visits, the beef Wellington was the best. Good outdoor seating as well. Was there during restuarant week this year and the menu options for the week were spectacular. Great parking situation as well. You get what you pay for. Higher priced but it's so worth the splurge.
Good food and friendly staff.
Great food and fun atmosphere.
Love love love it! All the charm in the world & very friendly staff
This place is a fantastic hole in the wall. Good assortment of crab based dishes, pulled pork, and really affordable drinks (beer, liquor, etc). Went here after whitewater tubing and it was excellent!
Great hotel with bar
Fabulous. Fine dining! Wonderful service and great atmosphere.
The best hot wings I ever had. By the way, I had the boneless mango habanero.
this place is
Loved the whole experience!
Good food good price
Amazing food and very romantic atmosphere. Great for special occasions.
Hope George Washington had as great a meal as we did when he ate here!
Ok, the oldest tavern in the Americas: just go and enjoy.
You can't get a better burger than this place! Great service and a nice friendly atmosphere. Casual dining.
I would liken this place to an Applebee's or Ruby Tuesday in terms of food and ambiance. I got the wings which were delicious (would recommend). We happened to go on Thursday which was karaoke night and all the locals flocked in. Interesting night.
Great variety of drinks.
Great atmosphere, great service, terrible food and outrageous cocktail prices! Had great service but the boneless chicken wings were like shoe leather. Same with my friend's chicken tenders. My date's crab cakes were very small. I asked our server about the "house cocktails" that were advertised on a board above the bar for $3 during March Madness. He pointed me to a list of cocktails in the menu and I chose one but when the bill came the drink was ELEVEN DOLLARS! It was mostly ice and juice! No prices for the drinks were listed on the menu so I thought I was ordering a $3 cocktail and was shocked with by my bill! Good thing I only ordered the one drink!! It was karaoke contest night and I will probably come back for that event but next time I will eat somewhere else first and stick to water to drink!
Oldest tavern in america a must see in Newport.
A very nice and interesting place with very good food.
Great salad. Prime Rib and tremendous choice of brews. Steve was excellent waiter.
What a GREAT dining experience in A VERY historic setting. The food was exceptional and with great friends this made for a wonderful lunch. I would love to go back!!
We we're in Newport for our Anniversary and had reservations at the White Horse Tavern. The food was amazing, the staff was friendly, inviting and accommodating. We sat at the bar first to wait for our table, the bartender was one of the best and more knowledgeable than I've seen and our drinks were amazing. And most importantly everything we ate was delicious. This will be our restaurant of choice for future Newport Visits!
Great italian restaurant
Food was good and plentiful. Service was friendly and quick.
Great burgers. Loaded fries are good. Regular fries were uninspired.
This place was awesome! It is full of history, which you can read about in the pamphlet you receive with your menu. The food is expensive but delicious and cooked to perfection. The wait staff are friendly and check on you just enough. Definitely worth a visit!
Back again. As always, great food. Ordered the duck, mom had the sword fish and my daughter the beef Wellington. Great food, and great service with Denee!
Service ok, food ok, price for what you get.. not ok! We were not a cheap group by any means but what a rip off!! How do you share an app when there is only one?? Be warned on liquor that's off list... 30$ for a carefully measured oz of bourbon??? Come on.. 69$ bottle at the store!! Profit is profit but that is price gouging...
My husband and I had a wonderful brunch here. We were seated at a table but I asked the host which table George Washington sat at and he offered to move us to that table. Great customer service. Our server Courtney was great too. We tried the banana bread pudding with gelato and the strawberry short cake and both were excellent. My husband had the egg Benedict croissant and I had the chicken sandwich and we were both happy. Would have given 5 stars but my husband said the men's bathroom was filthy.
Nice and clean! Burgers we ordered were a little pricey but when they arrived we thought that they were well prepared and that they were worth the $12 or $13 price. Would definitely stop by again if I ever visit the beautiful area of Harper's Ferry!
I spoke with the general manager Regina when first arrived and requested to eat outside on their patio. She said our $23 steaks would have to be served in to go boxes because of their "china". We called her bluff and requested to eat in to see this china. In the end it was a common steak served on a common plate. Bottom line...tell the truth you do not want your dishes outside. A manager that lies CAN NOT BE TRUSTED by a consumer or by ownership!!!
Our waitress Jo was a pleasant and very helpful young woman. Really liked her and the food. Well. It was just amazing. Best pan seared chicken I have ever had. Very moist and full of flavor. The Reuben Cuban was delicious. I would definitely recommend and visit again. It's worth a try. Interesting history Also. Very cool
Very good burgers
This place speaks for itself. The antiquity of the building is amazing. Feels like an old speak easy. The bar is small but perfect in more ways than one. The bartenders are great with the history of place and always a joy to talk with.
Awful food and mediocre service
Place was great! Server was fast and friendly and the food was fantastic!
Love this place! We eat here after all our hikes. Great burgers, cold beer, teasonable prices, and friendly staff.
Very good food. Solid tap list.
Excellent service, food and atmosphere
Historic old restaurant. The food is good
The staff was excellent. Mary was phenomenal!!!!
Great food in such a historic place! Waiter was very great and advice and describing the menu. Felt welcomed and enjoyed every minute of my visit. The duck was amazingly good.
Excellent food and a romantic atmosphere, very much recommended. A historic place with a modern - and delicious - menu, friendly service and not giving you the feeling of needing to rush.
I can't say how much I loved this restaurant I came up from Dallas, Texas specifically to eat at this restaurant and it was very good. The service was excellent and the food was amazing. I look forward to visiting Newport again and returning to the White Horse Tavern!
Nice ambiance in this old building. We went for our anniversary and were seated in the formal dining area with the fire place. I was worried based on some reviews that it was going to be too formal but need not have worried, and the service was friendly not stuck up. Everyone was friendly, from the coat check girl, to our waitress, who wished us a happy anniversary too having noted during the reservation we were celebrating, which i thought was a nice touch. The dinner itself, the Beef Wellington was the reason for us choosing the place and it was good, it didnt blow me away hence the 4/5 stars but it was tasty. The prices were on the higher side so i expect perfection for that price. I would recommend, the place wasnt too busy when we were there on a Saturday night during a storm. Definite charm in this place.
Absolutely delicious food. Good service. Looking forward to eating there again. Both pretzel stick appetizers are a highlight of the menu. Prices are reasonable for the amount of food.
Service was quick and friendly. Food was fixed as said in menu. Good food at reasonable prices.
Chesapeake crab chowder was fabulous
Beef Wellington was very scrumptious. Good atmosphere.
This is a beautiful antiquated colonial home refashioned to be a restaurant. It's cozy , charming and absolutely delicious. The service is great. There's a fireplace in all rooms. Ambiance is very romantic. I had lobster bisque and seered scallops. Both were amazing. The only downside is the proximity of the tables.
Best Steak in Town.
Definitely a go to as it is America’s first bar. Aside from this the drinks are good but nothing spectacular. Food menu is limited, not really vegetarian friendly, and pretty pricey.
very historical place with awesome choice for drinks. However, not many food choices if you are vegan / vegetarian. The staff is very helpful and provide a great service. We will visit again for sure.
Lunch stop after white water rafting. Simply macaroni salad, cole slaw, fried chicken, rolls & cookies and beverage. Place was clean. Chicken was good.
The atmosphere is relaxing, the waitstaff are super and the food is exceptional.
The service was the slowest I experienced in all of Newport and the bartender had no personality. Took 20 mins between being acknowledged and receiving a very simple drink, wasn't because of workload, only 8 ppl around the upstairs bar and wasn't making other drinks...just seemed very inattentive which is sad for a place that has the history of this establishment. Plus drinks are easily double the price vs other local venues. 3 stars because of the excellent selection of wines and liquors.
They knew what tequila was!
Beautiful old tavern thats almost 350 years old. The servers were all very sweet and accommodating. The food is top notch. The steak and duck were seriously 5 Star restaurant quality food. I would highly recommend this restaurant and most definitely come back.
Creative and awesome bar drinks, wonderful food and service.
We are from Lincolnshire and the food was brilliant very good portions well worth the money and the staff was excellent highly recommend , we will definitely be going back
Food and service is excellent! Staff are so very friendly. We always enjoy stopping here for a meal!
The brussel sprouts had great flavor, but were not cooked enough. I took them home and microwaved them for 2 minutes, then they were delicious. The dessert was very good.
Lovely place for lunch and dinner. A little bit pretentious overall, but the food makes up for it. Expect to sit near some rich blowhard talking loud about himself.
Stopped in for a drink in the Country's Oldest Pub - it's a must do. The Bartenders were great as was the atmosphere.
Good spot
The place is very nice, but half the menu wasn't available and what they had was just ok. We had some oysters, which were pretty good, and the burger, which was pretty mediocre.
Took forever to get service. When we did, we were ready to order food and the server told us no that she was busy and would have to come back. It took us 15 minutes to get our drinks. On top of that, it cost 20 dollars for 3 drinks.
Update: Returned in 2019 and treated myself to their Bavarian breadsticks and craft beer cheese and was absolutely delighted. The mozzarella sticks were perfect with gloriously stretchy cheese without any excess grease. Service is still amazing, fast and friendly. Can't sing enough praises. Can't beat their Happy Hour prices either. 10 out of 10. Amazing food with a friendly waitstaff. The prices aren't bad at all for the portion size (big plates) and the drinks are spot on. I had the boneless bourbon bbq wings and they were meaty (clean, white meat) with a perfectly fried breading and a sauce so good you'll run home and tell your mama! Must try while staying at the Clairon.
Went in for a drink. Bartender was very impersonal and completely judgmental. Ordered a 16 dollar shrimp cocktail. 4 big, not so fresh shrimp. Paid and left.
Fast and friendly service. Good food.
Food excellent, beer excellent!
I love the history of White Horse Tavern. We had visited 20 years ago. This month we came with our family as we celebra te ed our 50th anniversary touring Newport. The tavern did not disappoint. Food was delicious & our waiter, Dominique, was perfect...just the right balance of warmth & humor & professionalism.
Great food. Prices are good. Service excellent. Good mix of food, sandwiches to steaks.
The history and food were great. The service was okay and, for what we paid, should've been better.
So terribly disappointed. Been going for years and always had great food and service. Except last night was terrible. Went with my niece and her boyfriend and watched as all the couples were attended to and we were overlooked. First got served the wrong wine then sat with a table full of dirty dishes sipping water as the waiter walked by our table at least 10 times and ignored us. When it came time for dessert we had to wait for him to take and serve the couples that came after us before we were even given a menu. I was so embarrassed as this was a celebration and we were treated so poorly. Not sure if I’ll ever return.
The oldest operating tavern in the country. They have a great selection of house made mixed drinks. They serve lunch and dinner along with just about any drink you can come up with. Four of five original fireplaces still work and its great to walk around and see how the original architecture was designed and built. A great place to visit for a quick drink or meal.
My buffalo chicken sandwich was delicious and very reasonably priced. Even though they were moderately busy it didn't interfere with the delivery of our meals.
Stopped in for a drink last night 5/11, went to the upstairs bar and had a great old fashioned. The bartender was great and the drinks were delicious!
Great atmosphere. Lots of history. Food was very good. Waiter made it even more enjoyable.
Incredible restaurant from 1673. Very happy the building was saved- a real special place
The best burgers and seafood I'll be going back again soon
Compliments from Fort Worth! Service was exemplary and the beef wellington was perfection! I enjoy history and tasty eats on my travels and highly recommend to anyone seeking the same.
We ordered a spicy steam shrimp the shrimp was devein , it wasn’t cooked properly it tasted awful for being seasoned with old bay it lacked a taste of the real Maryland style shrimp I wouldn’t recommend this at all. I also order the cream of crab soup so dark in color not the original cream of crab soup color there was very little meat in the crab soup whatsoever this is another do not order it’s taste is OK but there’s no meet . So my recommendations for stopping by the White horse Tavern is just stick to the wings you’ll be OK
Wow, great food in a great atmosphere with great service. What more can I say?
Went here 2 nights in a row... 1st night we had great service. Had to order bar food from the late menu and it was very good. 2nd night we ordered entrees at 3:30 pm and after about 15 mins our waitress came back and told us that the special we ordered wsn't available until after 5 pm. She apologized because she was unaware of this. We changed our order and we got rib eye steak med rare... Well... Steak was very bloody..Didn't have any flavor. I had,to drown it in steak sauce.. It was, supposed to come covered in mushroom n gravy sauce but it didn't. Pointed that out to our server and again she apologized.. I actually had a very hard time eating the steak because it was mostly fat. Needless to say... I only ate about 10% of my food. This place is a hit and miss. I guess it depends on who is on duty each night.
Food was not very good, service was slow.
Best restaurant in Newport. Alex you are amazing. Thanks so much for the great experience.
Oldest restaurant in the country and 10th oldest in the world. A must stop just for the nostalgia. Cool place and feel inside. Nice staff. We stopped in for 2 cocktails. The food looked and smelled great. Next time I will eat here.
This was one of the best dining experiences I've had in a couple of years. Before i even dined there i messaged them on Facebook a couple times to ask questions and they got back to me promptly. Below, Im going to post a screenshot of my review of them, on Facebook. So please see the picture below.
Amazing. The oldest tavern in the US. Going back.
We're out of towners, didn't know where to eat. We stayed at adjoining hotel to the restaurant. Asked desk person where a good place to eat was, we didn't know,it was there, and he said this place. Group of five people, five people completely satisfied. Wings... Come by the fives, they were big and good. Couple of 1/2# burgers were ordered medium rare, they came out perfect. If you want K,M,M you will have to ask for it. We don't use it in restaurants and was shocked not to have it because we forgot to say to not put it on. A pasta dish was ordered with shrimp, they were huge shrimps and covered the oval dish. A crab cake meal was ordered as well and consumer liked it very much and that says alot beings she's from southern Maryland, home of the crab cake (but not the king). And finally, my boy ordered a strip steak, the small one, not sure what happened, but it came to the table cold as did the fries. Server took it back, about 10 minutes later brought out a big cut of ribeye, like better than 1-1/2 inches thick and hot fries, lots of hot fries! Nice gesture for the error for sure. He was quite appreciative. Oh yeah, the side dish of crab mac n' cheese that was ordered with a burger... Da Bomb! Thanks for a pleasant dining experience... In a Tavern none the less. Great food!
One the best dinners, great friends, great bartender,. Kudos to chef for an amazing meal. Thank you Mary, you were terrific
The service is very good. The food is usually good. The atmosphere is dark colonial as you would expect from a historic building. If you have respiratory issues you might avoid this place, however, because when the fireplaces are burning there is a backdraft that makes the dining rooms very smokey. You will also freeze if seated against the wall during cold weather as the windows leak air and the walls have no insulation.
Atmosphere is great. Menu not so great
Stopped for drinks between a wedding Mass and the reception. Manager was acommodating and drinks were generous. Really enjoyed our brief time here.
45 minutes to get appetizers and who knows how long for our entrees. Our snack wing appetizers was given to another table. These servers had no idea where the food was going.
Fantastic burgers and milkshakes. Very rich in flavor.
Great history. The food was.good, but service was SLOW.
Great place to see and the food was quite good! Worth the visit!
Great restaurant. Loved the atmospheres. Great service and beverages
Amazing service!!! Delicious food!! The atmosphere was great, fine dining with the feel of being in the oldest U.S. Tavern. Recommend anyone who visits the area to try this place!!!
Very nice experience. Head Burgers & Wings, very good. Service was fantastic. Be sure to ask for Lisa, very nice and efficient. She made the entire experience worthwhile.
nice
Amazing food for a 300 year-old place! Really, can't say enough about the food.
Very cool
Interesting piece of history. Good service, decent food. A bit overpriced.
Food is outstanding, good portions, and good atmosphere.
Fun place, tall girls playing ping pong can be very competitive.
The food was so so...not great. There was no wait on a Friday night.
Such good food and great service! Best burgers around, crab soup is unforgettable, and the desert ice cream is locally made. White Horse is a must if you're in the area!
Great service, great food, quaint atmosphere.
We had dinner during Newport Restaurant Week with a great bartender, Mark who has been there for years. It was a tremendous value, though I can't remember the appetizer and dessert so I'm not sure they were too remarkable. However the duck cassoulet is lovely. Hearty, thick and delicious.... the duck just fell off the bone. Superior.
Great food and staff
The beer is cold and the food was incredible. The prices are very steep. We only had an appetizer and moved on to some place more affordable for dinner. However, the Brussels sprouts were to die for. The service was outstanding and the atmosphere was very nice.
It was really a privilege to eat at the oldest tavern in America. Both rustic and upscale at the same time, the waitstaff were friendly and the lobster macaroni and cheese I ordered was delectable. I didn't have any ghostly encounters but the history is tangible within the White Horse Tavern's walls.
Great friendly place in town. Very lovely and lovely. Servers are great and go out of way to make you feel good. Food is delicious as well. Definitely go here. Very cosmopolitan.
It's a restaurant in the lobby of a hotel - lower your expectations! Got a big ol' steak --- zero flavor, and very chewy. The one night we had to go out in Harper's Ferry, I figured we'd go for a steak, and this was not the best place to choose from. I think the only reason I'm giving it 2 stars is because the sides were good, the beer was good, and I was full when I left. Texas Roadhouse is better.
Used to be great. Had lunch with 3 friends. Server lied about the lobster being fresh. It was a frozen product. My husband was a lobsterman, I know. Salad was wilted. Rolls were so hard you could hardly bite them. I will never go back. Sham on you!
Fun place Thursday evening. Food is good as well.
Good food and great staff
Very cool place. Disappointing attention to details. Bartender tried to substitute ordinary gin in an "artisan " cocktail. Menu description did not match what we were served. Expected better.
Food was excellent but atmosphere wasn’t what we expected. Squished into a small room and had a cold feel to overall experience. Would still go back for the calamari though.
Great beer selection and pleasant staff!
The quaint environment is awesome! There are huge fireplaces that warm the rooms nicely. It's just a great piece of history. Cozy and fun!
I really enjoyed this place for lunch and dinner. The food was good, not great and the prices are reasonable. Especially like the frequent lunch card.
All of our food was cold and we waited a long time to get the food.
A step back in time. The building is a treasure. The food is great with service to match. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is they have a huge fireplace which was not on the night wee were there. Worth the trip.
Great food great people
This has become a regular stop whenever we go tubing nearby. It's a nice, comfortable place to eat with good burgers and drinks. (Black bean burger and a rum and coke, please!) Great spot to unwind after a day out!
Very good food with friendly staff
The ambiance was the best part of the evening at the White Horse; warm and romantic. The food was a little overpriced but undeniably delicious. The service was top-notch and not a detail was missed. Highly recommended for a date night, make sure to make reservations!
The swordfish steak was stunning. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by a very accomodating host. There were not many guests, but our waiter, who was new and accommodating tables on the second floor and outside, took immediate priority over out table. The food came out very quickly, and we were invited to stay as long as we liked to enjoy our meal. I wil absolutely be attending this restaurant again in the future. BRAVO!!
What a place, what an ambience. Great people, great food and really good bourbon collection. Awesome views of the landscape around. Definitely recommend it.
Good food and service. Soup (cream of crab) could have been a little warmer but I ate it so fast it did not matter.
Great place, great food, and ask about the gistory of the tavern
Place was warm and cozy, next to the chimeny ideal for a date of two. Dinner was great! I personally had clam chowder soupd, the beef ribs, butterscotch bread pudding and one of their French red wines. It was amazing!!
Every thing you would expect from a historic tavern. Amazing ambiance, terrific food and excellent service.
Excellent food. Service was extremely slow. Our reservation ended us in the bar area which was extremely loud. Management made no effort to quiet rude patrons. Would normally be 5 stars, otherwise, and return solely for the food.
Limited menu/kitchen, but great selection of craft beers.
Great food
Great food!! Is attached to a hotel so don't get the full restaurant experience but the staff were very friendly
Food was good and service was good once we were seated. We arrived a bit before 6:00 and were basically ignored at the door. We left and checked their hours, and determined they were in fact open. Finally, the bartender waved us to sit anywhere, we picked up our own menus and sat down. After that, everything was great.
Server (Renea) was awesome. Way too loud. Very bad acoustics. 2 of us at a high top could barely hear each other.
Love this place! Food was awesome!
Go for the ambience and the history. Go for the drinks. Don't go for the food.
Food was ok, but cannot beat the location for historical site.
So taken aback by the ambience here. The staff is so professional. The pricing was great. Best Chowder I have ever had.
We came here for a birthday dinner for 2. We ordered the Brussels sprouts for an app per the recommendation of our waiter, good portion, well cooked and the sauce was like a mayo/aioli/mustard which was delicious. We ordered the scallop risotto and their pork chop special. The risotto was a bit bland but the scallops were cooked well. The pork chop dish came with an array of veggies and flavors & a decent portion for the price ($45). The decor is old civil war like: dark green painted walls with floral curtains, simple tables and chairs, oil lit ambiance & cozy. Service: 5/5
Oldest Tavern in the US. How’s that for awesome? Drinks, food - just what you’d expect. Perfect.
Good food great beer, kind of pricey though
No host or hostess ever available so always seat yourself no matter what the sign says. Wait only 5-10 mins at most for a server as the food is not worth the wait.
Supposedly the oldest tavern in the US. Or the oldest continuous tavern in the US it something along those lines. Went for dinner with friends and colleagues and it was a good experience. The place is generally candlelit and the bar is well stocked. Had premium rye and other brandies. Had dinner upstairs and ordered a swordfish and vegetables (not the exact order but something like that). Also sampled the chowder off the plate of a colleague and little bits of other dishes off other colleagues (
The beer is cold and the food was incredible. The prices are very steep. We only had an appetizer and moved on to some place more affordable for dinner. However, the Brussels sprouts were to die for. The service was outstanding and the atmosphere was very nice.
Chicken Chesapeake is awesome!
Bad wifi
Friendly service. Don't expect leaniency in posted grill times. One minute after 9 pm you get rabbit or fried food. But it was delicious fried good. Maybe I was just starving.
The food, the incredible service, the simple decor which highlights the historic story of the building. Everything about this place was awesome. We came here to celebrate our five year anniversary and I don't regret it. When I return to Newport, I'm definitely coming back.
Had grill wings, very good!! Dinner was ok. Our server Kayleigh was the best!!! Friendly and smiling!!
The food, ambiance and of course history were all on point. Magical evening in the midst of a heavy rainstorm!
The food and service was very good.
The house was really cool. But the food was just soso and way over priced
Really good food..nice atmosphere..kind people..really appreciated the ability to enter through hotel lobby...price was pretty good and got more than enough for the money
We did not stay here only ate and the food was delicious!!!!
The food was just so-so. We had the lobster mac & cheese and it was a bit dry. Not enough sauce.
This is one of my absolute favorite places in Newport. I've never had anything I didn't like. The pork belly appetizer is my go to, as well as the butterscotch bread pudding for dessert. They have so many amazing entrées to choose from that I can't pick a fave. I do really like that they serve local seafood as well.
The mozzarella sticks were cold inside and service was poor. The steak was delicious but the time it took us to get our second drink and the bill was not worth it.
We have been there in the past and have had a wonderful experience. Not today, we had to ask water and additional beverages. Ordered a med well burger it was well done. Asked for mustard gor the burger waited 10 minutes for it. Waiter was inattentive and it wasnt busy. Very disappointed after the wonderful experience we have had in the past.
Food was pretty good.. I ordered the NY Strip, side salad, and hushpuppies.. I never got my salad which was a bummer, but the food I did get was good. Although, you shouldn't microwave those pretzel sticks.. they're much better in the oven!!
great food. great service.
first visit a couple of years ago. return every chance we get!
Great food , somewhat slow service, but overall very enjoyable.
Dont expect a typical tavern experience this is a formal dining establishment with a emphasis on proper etiquette and fine meals to match. One of the coolest parts about this place is the food is actually a good portion size unlike most places in this price range and atmosphere.
Extremely condescending & rude waitstaff. The manager, Joe, is severely pompous, cold & unwelcoming. The food is excellent but very small portions. Go somewhere else, this place is overrated because it solely plays off its history. Stay away.
Place is great!!! They have cool logos pressed into the buns
If I could add more stars, I would. American fare and the finest I have had ever. Service impeccable.
Walked in and was told to seat ourselves. Was given menus with 3 meal choices. Asked for a full menu and was told that's all they were serving at the moment. It was almost 3 o'clock so it was after the lunch rush and before the dinner rush. When I told the waitress that we would just pay for our drinks, she went and asked the cook if we could order something off the full menu. We were told we could get anything but baked or mashed potatoes. They were not prepared yet. That leads me to believe that nothing is made fresh when you order it. We opted to just pay for 2 iced teas and a water for $6.34 and find someplace better to eat. The waitress was also not friendly and did not apologize. She acted like we were bothering her. Will not go there again.
I have to say I wasn't expecting much given it was a restaurant inside a motel. But it actually ended up being pretty solid food (burger and fries) and I had a good local craft beer to wash it down. A friendly but not to friendly bartender and some TV's should sports. Can't ask for much more.
The food was beyond anything I expected. My steak was tender and perfectly cooked. Just to think we were in a room that possibly George Washington had been in was insane. Our waiter was a wealth of knowledge and truly down to Earth. It's expensive but well worth it
Historic establishment dating back to 16th century coupled with top notch service and finer dining. Enjoyed the lunch visit on a cold and damp November day.
Incredible cuisine and excellent ambiance. You'll be blown away by its 17th century charm. Excellent staff .
Good food, GREAT Service!
Great little place to eat!
Sam the bartender was great! Good food and attentive service. Smikes from all staff...Check it out!
Horrible cook, not worth eating, like really how do you make bad hot wings? and a salad taste like dirt? Expensive beer and richer liquor, and same weird older men crowd that shouldn't be driving anywhere.
We were seated in the second floor dining room which was quite nice and surprisingly quite considering almost every table was seated. The service was exceptional. The food will not disappoint.
Nice place. Plenty of parking. Large open dinning area with country decor. Staff was attentive and super friendly. Service was quick. Food was very good and the price was very reasonable. Local beers and drinks were very good. I would recommend this place.
Nice place for the outdoor enthusiast. Large screen TVs showing outside adventures. A good burger and cold beer.
Perfect old-timey place for a special occasion. Definitely try the New England clam chowder.
Our server was wonderful, the staff in this historic place is amazing and the food is fantastic. We love historic spots like this and cant wait to go back during our next visit !!!
Great service and great food.
Wonderful food, dark colonial atmosphere, and very great service. We had a delicious lunch, clam chowder and the raw oysters were great. If walls could talk!
A great night out. My wife and I arrived without reservations on Saturday at dinner time (unwise) but we were seated within ten minutes. We enjoyed the landmark's historical value and ambiance over soup (chowder and lobster bisque), which was excellent, before our entrees arrived. I had the catch of the day (seared red fish with root vegetables in a cream sauce) and my wife had the swordfish. Both were cooked expertly and the flavor was above expectations. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable. We will no doubt be returning when our friends and family come to visit Newport.
Head host was extremely rude to us. This restaurant is not kid-friendly. We have never been treated so poorly. I have two boys - eight and three. I was worried this restaurant would be too nice for kids, so I called in advance. I spoke to a nice woman and asked her expressly whether my kids were welcome to come. She said they were “absolutely welcome.” She said they didn’t have a kids menu, but they had two options for them. From the moment we walked in, the host clearly had a different view. He barely looked at us, didn’t greet us, and just asked if we had a reservation. He had someone else seat us, and we then watched as he interacted with every other table and completely ignored us. On the way out, he almost collided with my son as he came around a corner. He said nothing to us - literally - just glared at us. We were obviously not welcome. Lesson learned - don’t bring your kids here. My message for the restaurant management —just post on your website that kids under a certain age aren’t welcome. Don’t encourage parents to bring their kids and then treat them like second-class patrons. We won’t be back - not as though they will care.
I liked the steak and fries!
A wonderful dining experience. We had a marvelous lunch which was impeccably served. No rushing, no bothering. A very historic setting well worth a visit just for the ambience. Reservations are mandatory.
Love the wedge salad, and their wings too. Its been a while since I have found a place that actually makes their wings nice and crispy!!
Don't know we didn't stay. The host was very rude and I feel it was because we had our grandson. He was making it very difficult to get a table for five. I will not go back and would not recommend it. It should be taken off the tours if the owner doesn't want to accommodate families.
Good food, good service, appreciated the coupons from #riverriders
I ordered fish and chips, my place was full of oil because they did not drain the fish before putting on the plate. My aunt's fries were oily you can see the oil dripping while mine were dry. It shows that there is inconsistency in cooking and the need of learning cooking techniques that will make their food better. The other thing, when we walked in there was a sign that reads "Please wait to be seated, but no hostess on site, and then one of the waitresses said to the people in front of us just sit wherever, which to me was kind of unprofessional.
Great tavern atmosphere. We were welcomed with smiles and great service by Lisa the teacher, Colleen the Tuba player and Marcus put the love in our chicken wings! We really appreciated all of it very much. Please pass on the love, great crew!
Used to be great. Had lunch with 3 friends. Server lied about the lobster being fresh. It was a frozen product. My husband was a lobsterman, I know. Salad was wilted. Rolls were so hard you could hardly bite them. I will never go back. Sham on you!
The appetizers and cocktails were great. The oysters were great, as was the service and atmosphere. I'm leaning more towards a 4.5, but I can't justify giving a restaurant 5/5 when I'm paying $30 per entree, and they aren't up to par. I go the beef Wellington, and though the pastry was great, the steak was a bit overcooked and just didn't taste that great. My gf got the grouper, and it was near the tail, and the bloodline, so was really fishy. If these were $15 dishes, fine, it's a 5/5, but not at these prices.
This Tavern is in a class of it's own. A Tavern experience with a touch of class. Catering to ale lovers in the menu as well as the refreshments. They have added a touch of originality to old time recipes ( try the French Onion soup!) Trying their potato chips is a must do as as well. Very clean and a friendly staff too. Put this one on your list of places to go!
Overall very disappointing. This is our third time going there for dinner and it was truly the worst. The waitress had no personality. The food was missing many components. For example: burger came without lettuce and tomato even though the menu says it comes with it. However the most disappointing part of our visit was the condition of the restaurant...simply dirty. Dirty tables, dirt underneath the tables (napkins, silverware, food, etc...) and just overall gross. Everywhere we looked it was just dirty and messy. No one bothered to clean anything up. No one wants to dine in a dirty restaurant.
It was great. From atmosphere to the option of black table napkins to avoid getting lint on black clothes. The catch of the day was amazing and so was everything else we ate. Definitely recommend.
Very tasty food. We are staying at The hotel next door so had food as take out. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Food was very nice but our only criticism would be that the fish and hush puppies that my partner got was maybe cooked a little to long and the crab dip had a little bit too much mayo. Would definitely eat from here again.
Over an our waiting for the food that wasn’t even good, waist of time and money. Sorry for us :(
Not a great place but the food was good.
Amazing chips and burgers. Received astounding service from an extremely polite server named Kayleigh. Great Night. Would recommend
An absolute marvelous experience. High class delicious food at a reasonable price. Very good service. Kudos to the new manager. I highly recommend the White horse Tavern .
We had a nice watress named Lucy. Food was good.
Great steak and cheese
They make a really good hamburger, excellent service and fun atmosphere.
Awesome awesome place! It's very clean and I love the atmosphere. The pool is pretty great and it's really cooling when you're hot. I love the food it is reasonable priced and delicious. We were going to stay today when we came, but they changed the name so ended staying at a quality that we thought was this place, but we got the one on short rd. Never stay at the quality Inn on short road. The next time we come, we will remember it's called the "white horse tavern" and stay here . Keep it up!
In what I have to say was something of a surprise, given that most reports about this tavern focused more on its age than it's food, I found the food at this historic Newport Tavern to be very good. The "Rhode Island" style clam chowder, essentially a clear broth with clams and potatoes, was very good, Password B scotch eggs and the burgers. The staff was pleasant, and it's not all that often that you get to eat in a 320-year old place. Particularly on this side of the water.
food was good but not quite at the price level they are charging. Paying for the history
Great little gem tucked away from all the shopping. Top shelf liquor selection and masterfully created cocktails. The bar is very tiny but yet you don't feel cramped. I did not have any food this time, but plan on trying latter this week as what came out of the kitchen looked amazing!
Oldest tavern in America . great place for a special Dinner. A bit expensive , but worth the trip. Not a place for the casual however . was made to remove my hat upon entry to the place- this for me was was a reason not to return . not a good way to conduct business . I was only there for a quick martini in the bar area with a friend - not Dinner . I would've understood the hat policy for that
Perfect experience in all ways, from greetings at the door, our experienced bar tender, wonderful waitress Sarah, and of course the food paired just right with the wine. Warmth from the human sized fireplace and quiet music was just what we needed. Our best meal in Newport.
Great food and staff
Got a great history of the establishment just sitting at the bar. Host was rather uptight - didn’t like us waiting to sit at the bar and just looking at the pics on the wall - like what’s the problem, dude? Did not like the clam chowder at all, it just wasn’t what I was expecting. But we will definitely return, possible for dinner next time.
Great service and wonderful food. Prices are very reasonable. When we go out to eat. We go here and we send all our guests here .
Good service
Bike week great fun and entertainment
So my wife and I stayed at the hotel for our honey moon where this Resturant is located. I had the crab cakes and she had the crab soup. We both have been dog sick to our stomachs for the past two days. This definitely put a damper on our stay in West Virginia. I would definitely not order any seafood from this place. Not sure what the problem is.... we are back at home and still suffering. Just wanna give a heads up for the ones out there still trying to enjoy their stay. Avoid at all cost...
In Newport after being in Bar Harbor, ME for 5 nights. This was by far our favorite meal. We loved the historical atmosphere, the service was great, and the food is even better. We had the steak fritz, lobster mac and cheese, and scallops. All were excellent. Appetizers were as great as the meal.
Good food and service. Kayleigh was patient and friendly with our group. Steak and Cheese was hot, tender and tasty. Crab soup and pizza were also nicely done. Small, but good selection of beer.
Good food. Good Beer. Staff was excellent in helping us, as visitors, know the area and best historical places to see.
Great crowd
Pretty cool that the place is as old as it is, but if you didn't know it going in, the service team takes no advantage of it at all. From there, we got food that was good but not great along with service you might expect from a trainee at a fast casual chain. Visited for a birthday celebration which went unacknowledged, an easy way to make customers feel welcome. A disappointing miss that could have been outstanding.
Although the setting is beautiful, the service doesn’t follow the atmosphere set. The food is good, but great would be a stretch. Stay away from the coffee unless you want to taste coffee from a diner.
I have eaten there several times and the food doesn't disappoint. Try the daily specials.
Don’t go here. Seemed like a tourist trap. “Oldest tavern in U.S.” or something along those lines. Came for lunch and restaurant was out of lobster and out of pasta …!? Seriously, how is a restaurant out of pasta? Strick dress code for dinner, make sure to check before going for dinner.
This was the best dining experience of our entire vacation! The food was phenomenal!!! This is the 10th oldest restaurant in the world! Joe and Ian made this an evening to remember. Amazing Beef Wellington, Fresh Local Swordfish, delicious Lobster MAC and scallops! Strawberry shortcake was outstanding! Thank you guys!!!
Great food and service!
The White Horse is an amazing place for a history buff. It's a bit pricey but if it's a special occasion for someone who loves old places, well worth it. The downstairs bar was full so the hostess offered us the upstairs bar. The ambiance is perfect. My husband hadn't been there before and he was thrilled with the early American decor and vibe. The wait staff is attentive, the wine excellent and the whole experience just wonderful. I highly recommend this for a special occasion.
Nice atmosphere. Has good food choices and lunch specials. Even has drink specials. I had the steak and cheese and my wife had the cheese hamburger. Botj was really good. We opted for the side salad which also was good. The chief came to our table and had a conversation with use. Really nice employees. Will be coming back.
Very cool spot if you like historic places. You can almost feel the history when you walk through the door. Food and drinks were delicious!
Nice change of pace. Their Crab cakes are great. The waitstaff are always very sweet. Menu is just different enough.
Really really great food and wine. Beef Wellington is juicy and not dry at all. It has been on their menu for 30+ years. You have to dress up for dinner so make sure you look nice and check their website for the dress code. We sat right by the fireplace and had a wonderful evening. Good service and everything was tasty.
Nice atmosphere.
Melissa was absolutely outstanding as was the food. Fantastic place to stop by for any occasion!
Food was okay, had a burger and the crab fries. The crab meat was a smidge bland but the burger was good. Staff was friendly enough but it was a bit strange as it seemed like someone working the hotel was covering as you guys may have been understaffed at the time. We had to wait a decent amount of time for service and were only checked on like once when another waitress came in. Coulda just been a 4th of July thing. I appreciate the response though and maybe we'll give you guys another try if we're back in town.
Just got a Cobb salad. Just a pile of lettuce
Great food served by a very attentive staff
Good price good food better drinks
One of the beers was really good.
We are at the ground floor bar, one of my favorite places to eat in Newport
Great food and service. Gluten free options are: steak, potato, salad, grilled wings.
An absolute pleasure any time of year. Lunch during the summer in their outdoor space is so much fun and dinner in the warm dining room in the winter is delightful. Pricey, but the food is excellent, service is perfect and friendly, and the atmosphere is everything you'd want from an historic Newport dining establishment. If you can sneak up to the bar for their version of an Old Fashioned before dinner, consider it a bonus.
Delicious food. Very good staff and quick service. Highly recommend
Matredee was extremely rude and belittling. Bar attendant and waiter were great, but it did not make up for the rude first face of the establishment however. Will not return. Expensive for very so so food.
After being in Newport several times we finally stopped at White Horse tavern for lunch. This place is old established with cultural atmosphere, mens we're asking to take off hats, that is personally I like very much
Really good food. Great service. Kind of cramped, but it is also a 350 year old building. Top notch bar with good drinks. This pace is not inexpensive.
Beautiful old house converted into a restaurant/bar.
Love the Tavern very friendly staff and great food!!
Nice place for lunch
Great dinner and nice environment. Was glad to find this restaurant directly next to our hotel - super convenient.
Went there on an unusually warm and beautiful Saturday for Lunch. Very professionally greeted at the door. The place is very old and is very nice . It was a busy day so service a little bit slow. Had to send steak back as it needed a few more minutes cooking. Hot coffee then waiting waiting for cream to appear a while later was below average service. Food however is above average. Its a nice event type of place to go to.
Ordered two dessersts and were just ok. A better bread pudding can be found at Coddington Brewery. A store bought pecan pie would have been better as well.
Every time my family are in town, we love to go to the White Horse Tavern for lunch. Staff is very friendly, dishes are picked to perfection and the ambiance is delightful. This historic building was elegantly transformed into a lovely place for people to enjoy today. Must try.
It was great. From atmosphere to the option of black table napkins to avoid getting lint on black clothes. The catch of the day was amazing and so was everything else we ate. Definitely recommend.
Best memory from summer of my life. The oldest tavern in the United States. Incredible energy of history. Sit in the back bar for intimacy and great service. Incredible staff and unbeatable history. Custom cocktails and solid food.
Very old and historic place but service was EXTREMELY SLOW
First time visiting yesterday after driving by for 2 years wondering why there were so many cars parked there. Now I know why. Friendly staff, nice beer selection and food was really good. We will be back for sure.
Seriously cool place. I would have missed this gem if the tour I was on hadn't mentioned it. It's hard to imagine all the history this tavern has been through since it's opening in 1673 AD.
Stayed at the motel, so we tried out this restaurant. Ordered the steak special, and the steak itself, other than being underseasoned, was good. Unfortunately, everything else, the broccoli and the baked potato, came out cold. Even the coffee came out lukewarm, which was strange given that I had to wait several minutes after the rest of the table received their drinks. Otherwise, service was good.
Food was just ok, service was worse. Too many other good food choices in area that are much better options with better service. I was really disappointed.
We went today. We are staying at the KOA and noticed flyers for this place a short trail to the restaurant. Food was good. Service was polite but subpar waited nearly 30 mins to pay the check and even after that there were extra items on my check. Sadly they weren't that busy either.
4 stars because of the history... this place is nearly 350 years old. 5 stars because of the scallops! Food was excellent; service was excellent; ambiance was excellent. A must visit for anyone traveling to Newport.
Beautiful decor for the oldest Tavern in the United States! Food was delicious! Lunch menu is reasonably priced! Wonderful selection of specialty drinks!
I did not notice any crab in the crab dishes that were ordered. The crab mac n cheese and the chicken with crab were good until I started looking for the crab because I couldn't taste or see any. The crab cakes were really good there. The mixed drinks were really good. The pulled pork sandwich was really good.
Everything was great. Service, mimosa, eggs Benedict, and bacon. Everyone else there seemed to have and be enjoying good food too. Cool, historic ambiance.
Great service, great food. Good prices. Fairly quiet.
We loved the ambiance. Glad we stopped at this historic place. We had a nice table next to the fire. However, It was kind of pretentious. The chicken was great. I paid $41 for the seafood stew and my lobster was over cooked and had a rubbery consistency. Which is why 3 stars. We were looking for more of a pub atmosphere from the oldest pub in the US.
Great place and very friendly atmosphere.
Great burgers, excellent service, the best they accept pets, very cozy and romantic place
