Unrivaled food. This restaurant is fantastic for people with gluten issues, vegans, and vegetarians. They will happily custom make your food so you can eat it and enjoy it. The owner, Jay is a wonderful host and his wait staff are lovely and professional. Once again, the food is amazing. Check it out!!

The food is fresh, cooked to order and amazing!!! So nice to have an amazing restaurant in Johnston. My daughter came in sad , miserable and starving because she just had her wisdom teeth. The owner took the time to sit down with her and asked what she likes and what she can have. She loved it and was in much better spirits.

Jessica Casciano

We have ordered take out from The Punjab twice now. The restaurant has just opened in a strip mall in Johnston on Plainfield Pike. The store is really nicely done. The dining area is cozy and decorated nicely. The bar is full, and they have some amazing (Sip of Sunshine) beers on tap. We haven't tried the buffet yet, but we are excited. First order was Chicken Curry (Spicy), Chicken Tikka Masala, Keema Naan, and some chutneys. The spicy curry was definitely spicy, and full of flavor, would order again, but we need to explore the menu first, we just wanted to order a standard. The Tikka Masala was a little sweet, but captured the flavor and was delightful. The Naan was top knotch. The Second order was Lamb Rogan Josh (Spicy), Butter Chicken (mild), the non veggie app platter, and Alu Naan. I am just as happy with everything ordered. Great lamb and chicken, no fat or chewy bits (my wife rarely eats meat, and she approves). The food is on par with the best RI/Mass has to offer. It's priced like your regular sit down Indian spots, but with a nicer layout. I HIGHLY recommend trying out this joint, I hope they do amazing, as I hope I can enjoy takeout and dinners from here for years to come. Thanks for moving into the neighborhood, I appreciate not having to head into Providence, and my friends are now coming from the city as the food here is amazing, and they know good Indian!!! I've written some Yelp reviews, but never have I Google reviewed. The Punjab deserves a review on any platform I can find.

It was great to see Jay and all of our friends from the Punjab at their new establishment in Johnston. As always, the food was delicious, well-proportioned, and the atmosphere cannot be beat, with superb music videos! Looking forward to returning next month!

My husband said let's eat Indian food and we went to Punjab. Everything was delicious but the garlic naan was divine, addicting! We went at a slow time. The owner was attentive and friendly. A few days later we went to a top rated Indian restaurant and the naan was limp and nothing special. Both places were pricier than we usually spend but we never eat Indian food. I'd go back to Punjab just for the garlic naan.

Best food and the BEST service I’ve ever had! I am a very indecisive person when it comes to what to order on the menu. Little did I realize when I sat down the owner was waiting on me, he personally surprised me with the most amazing dish! I not only had amazing food but amazing conversation.

i visited my friend in Rhode Island from Canada. Had an amazing experience at The Punjab. Service was great Never felt so close to the home cooking cuisine. 10/10 Way to go. Preferred!!!

This is hands down my favorite Indian restaurant ever. My husband is Punjabi, and when we used to live in Providence we made a point to go to Jay's previous restaurant (Apna Punjab) weekly. Since moving back to New York City we have yet to find a restaurant that comes even close to comparing. My favorites are the chicken kadhai, bindhi masala and their stuffed paranthas. But you cant go wrong - everything is delicious, and the owner, Jay, is so nice!

Here is my detailed review. We went for an ala carte late lunch on new year's day. There was no complimentary papad which is obvious to expect with the ala carte and the very high prices. Firstly the samosa's, the filling had a slight over dose of ginger which is unusual. Then potato and peas filling was not having any flavor, probably it was a pretty old filling from the freezer. Then we had the channa samosa chaat. There was no mint chutney or tamarind chutney on the chat, there was no onion and coriander garnish. It was just couple of samosa's crushed and some channa masala added on top. Then came the worst part. We ordered Panner tikka kebab for a steep price of $16. This does not include any side of rice or naan. This was the worst preparation of a panner tikka kebab. Few cubes of plain panneer was tossed up with green peppers and onion served on a hot plate. This is NOT Panneer Tikka Kebab in any part of world. Then I asked for One order of Roti and one order of Naan. That guy interpreted the Naan as Garlic Naan and Roti as Chappathi. In what world?? Both of them are a dollar more, probably thats why !!.. The best part was the explanation he gave, which showed that he is part arrogant and part idiot, a dangerous combination. We had a chicken dish, which was the only decent thing in taste. I said medium spice but it was most certainly high spiced. The food is overpriced for the location. I would avoid unless it is the last Indian restaurant in RI.

The place is nice and clean and pretty decent decor. Food was really good. We had rogan josh, and it is one if the very good rogan josh I ever had. In general service is okay. I would recommend this place.

Had the lunch buffet. Fresh, hot and tasty. Super friendly staff.

Exceptionally creamy lamb korma! The garlic naan was delicious and had a nice crisp to it, all served by a very attentive staff

I think you cannot find a better Indian restaurant than this. Food is awesome, service is great and decor is beautiful! I’m vegetarian and the taste of food was very good. Paneer dishes were excellent so was kofta and chole dishes. Real Indian tasty food!

LOVE THIS PLACE!!! I followed jay the owner here from his old restaurant in Rehoboth (apna Punjab) . my step dad is from Pakistan so I grew up on indopak food and this place fits the bill of really good Indian food . jay the owner is always nice and friendly and his new place is a hike from taunton but a hike I'm willing to make for such good food . its a true gem. At the end of the day you also have to take the negative reviews with a grain of salt and remember any Indian restaurant in america is also trying to cater to WASPS (white Anglo Saxons) which is true for pretty much all Indian cuisine any of the western world .

Worst Kima Nan I've ever eaten. Back to Taste of Insa I go. However the manager is a sweetheart. Very lovely and funny man. He just needs a new chef. Sorry but I tell the truth. Brutal or not.

Was the first time I ever tried Indian food and we went to the buffet in really enjoyed trying all the different foods available. The owner was very friendly and helpful as well as all of the rest of the staff there. We will definitely be returning there in the future.

Very bad experience with food served and the owner of the restaurant,it took nearly 30mins for someone to take the order and it concluded with some dramatic presentation of food that you have not ordered at all.I am pretty sure you guys will not be served with what you order and you might be lucky to have someone else order.

Followed this place all the way from Rehoboth. Can’t get rid of me. The food is authentic and amazing: It’s that good. They’ve made bhatura as a special order for my family when we’ve had guest over from India. I really appreciate this business. The owner and staff are missed greatly and deserve all the success in their new place.

Except Lamb curry, everything was awful. I had to order Lamb curry as the buffet was terrible and we already started the buffet (my mistake, should’ve looked at the options first before starting). Very limited option in buffet, just one dessert. But the staff and everyone was very nice. Will not visit this place for buffet, may go back for À la carte (mainly for the Lamb curry).

Toni Jean Agbodike

Fabulous!!! Food was amazing!! Jay the owner was very attentive, funny. We had an amazing time.

One of the decent Indian (Punjabi) food in the neighborhood. The preparation and the taste is authentic, seems they have a good chef! A’ la carte food is very nice but quite expensive, around $16 for an entree at Johnston, RI is too much, they should reduce a bit to sustain in long term. Buffet available only on Friday and weekends, very few items but that’s okay since it’s affordable at $13 and whatever the food choices are good enough. Service is terrible, but hope they will improve with more staff, since it’s still a new place. It’s 4 stars since the price is on the higher side. As a local guide, I need to record my statement that I was about to swallow a pin (see the picture) from the food but luckily I took it out. I told the manager to make sure they are more careful and recording of this statement is to enforce that. I’ll visit the place again but any such negative remark comes up, I’ll downgrade and ditch it forever. Yes, I did downgraded from original 4* to 3*. This place became soso, so bye bye!

We decided to try Punjab and were delighted with our take out order! The chicken Tikka massla was perfect! We also ordered vegetarian lentil dish that was very tasty! We will be back and hopefully dine in! It's great to have an Indian restaurant close to home!

Below average indian food. I always thought that you can never go wrong with Indian food, I was wrong. Dry and greasy food, even the bread. Don't waste your money here. Go to Kabab and Curry on Thayer St if you want excellent and very tasty indian food.

I bumped into this place by accident and later came to know that this place is run by the same people who owned Apna Punjab Restaurant in Rehebooth, MA. This place is clean and spacious and by the initial looks, looks good. It is certainly not a fine dining restaurant by any stretch of imagination, but for casual dining this is place certainly lives to expectations. Interior is tastefully decorated with stuff from Indian kitchen. I believe the interior is still not complete and I hope that it gets even better when they are finally settled. The restaurant owner was very energetic and attended to our needs. He was enthusiastic in talking to the guests. Sometimes he has some crude humor. We liked the Aaalu Bonda appetizer which was on the house. Food is good. I am a bit confused by the spicy level. One time ordered high spicy level and it came out to be reasonably spicy. The second time I ordered same high spicy level, the food came out not spicy at all. However, spicy or not, food was delicious. Price is definitely on the higher end, especially for lunch. There are many Indian restaurants that offer similar quality good lunch like this at about 70% of this price. I am quite surprised that they decided to go with premium pricing for a casual dining place in this locality. They probably went with this premium pricing because there are no other Indian restaurants nearby. I wonder if this is sustainable after the initial buzz of curious guests are gone. It is I hope they prove me wrong. To summarize, I would certainly recommend to try this restaurant.I would hope that they do something either with ambiance or service to make this place worthy of the premium pricing or include a separate lunch menu to be competitive.

The Greatest Indian food in the area, maybe the whole state. I've eaten here at least a dozen times and always fresh and delicious.

I eagerly awaited the opening of The Punjab, since I usually have to travel to Providence or East Greenwich for Indian food, I was happy to see an Indian restaurant closer to my location. I was not disappointed. The food is amazing and the staff is amicable and accommodating. The ingredients are fresh and the owner/manager even came over and asked us specifically what our likes were, helping us choose menu items. He even made a special lamb dish for my young son, made to my son's individual "spice level". The interior of the restaurant is a warm, soothing color and the acoustics allow for conversation without being overwhelmed by surrounding noise or having to shout across the table. I highly recommend The Punjab to anyone who loves Indian food.

This being my first time having Indian and it was amazing. Shortly after we sat down after the water came, we got this small plate with 3 balls, and a side of sauce, and some spicy peepers (at least I think they were peepers). I forgot to ask what it was, might have been something made with chickpea. For an appetizer, we got the Lamb Samosa, this is a Deep-fried turnover stuffed with minced lamb, peas and spices. It was fantastic, we used the sauce that was brought with the first part and just added to the flavor. For our main course we shared the Garlic Naan, and I ordered the Lamb Saag (Spinach, garlic, ginger) and my wife got Shrimp Korma (shrimp, onion, cream gravy & spices). We had the chose of mild, medium or hot, we both got the mild. IT came with a side of rice. Both were delicious, I am not a fan of shrimp, but the sauce in the Shrimp Korma was amazing. We were both dipping the Garlic Naan in the Shrimp Korma sauce. The staff were friendly and attentive, they kept filling our water (to me this is always a plus!). When we were done and leaving we stopped and spoke to the owner Jay. Jay is a super nice guy, when I told him it was my fire time having Indian he was excited to hear this. To Jay and the staff at Punjab, thank you.

My wife and I really love eating Indian food. I found this restaurant after searching on Google. We gave it a shot. WOW!!! Amazing flavors and the best Indian food I have ever had. Jay, one of the owners, is very friendly and helpful in suggesting dishes based upon what foods you like. My son and his wife, who live in Texas, were visiting us and we brought them here. My son, who really didn't like Indian food, was reluctant. Jay suggested a few dishes. My son and his wife loved the food so much, we had to go back the next night. The next time they visit, we will all happily take that 35 minute trip to The Punjab. In the meantime, my wife and I will eat here regularly.

I'm about to hit you with some truth. The Punjab in Johnston RI is the best Indian restaurant in all of Rhode Island. **Drops the mic, and macho struts off the stage** I consider myself an Indian Cuisine junkie, and I've tried all the heavy hitters and flashy wannabes. This place doesn't get the hype as some of the other well known Indian restaurants and that, my fellow yelpers, is a culinary crime. As it stands, this is THE diamond in the rough when it comes navigating the lackluster choices in Rhode Island's Indian food game. You don't need to read any further, just grab your wallet and go now. Trust me. What's that? You say that you don't like Indian Food? Well that's because you haven't had The Punjab. Your experience has been tainted by the underwhelming and bland imitators in lil Rhody. When you get right down to the flavor, nothing beats The Punjab. Nothing. When I walk through the door a wafting aroma kisses me like a loving family member and I'm instantly transported to a faraway haven of intense spices, deep flavors, and exotic delicacies. I'm also usually greeted by Jay, the owner and purveyor of this fine establishment. The man is an absolute riot and makes every visit a pleasure. If you've never had Indian food before, just let him be your personal guide as he takes you on a magical flavor ride that will be sweet, spicy, and probably end with a cool refreshing cup of Ras Malai. The Punjab offers take out, but you really wanna dine in for the full experience. The appetizers, soups, and salads are wonderful. The Lamb Samosa and the Coconut Soup in particular are impossibly yummy comfort foods that will make your belly gleefully purr like a plump Tabby Cat. The menu is diverse and each entree is packed with DEEP spiced flavors. Don't be that person that just gets Chicken Tikka Masala. Yeah you, the same person who gets Chicken Pad Thai at every Thai Restaurant and never deviates. Stop that! Get adventurous and try something different! Try their delicious vegetarian Malai Kofta which never fails to blow my mind. Explore the menu and find a new favorite meal. If you can't handle spicy just order your dish mild. Even at Medium spice you'll begin to feel the heat. Within a few bites perspiration forms and dangerously clings to your brow as your body tries to handle the immense flavor overload. If you're a true purest you'll want it spicy. There is no wrong way to consume this majestic feast. The only wrong way is to not go at all. If you love Indian food make The Punjab your next Friday or Saturday night dinner plans. It's off the beaten path and doesn't have the snooty panache of being on The East Side or the glitz and glamour of Federal Hill, but these dishes are a MUST TRY. The Punjab is 100% worth seeking out. I've been here half a dozen times or so. This isn't some one n' done chew and screw review. I've sampled everything from the Desi Salad to the Mango Lassi. I really just go wild and try something new every time. Jay and his staff never disappoints. There is a wonderful passion and some incredible flavors at The Punjab. Do yourself and your loved one a favor...eat here. When you pay your bill you will gladly fork over your week's hard earned wages for the pleasurable food coma experience that was just delivered to you. It's the biggest Indian flavor you're gonna find here in the smallest state in the Union.

The food was quite tasty . We ordered take out . Would have helped if they gave some cutlery as well .

The food leaves a lot to be desired. Lacked flavor, salt, and overall food was very mediocre and overpriced compared to competitors. Also, did not receive utensils or napkins + the food was packed in Chinese food takeout boxes.

Nicholas R Bento

Great food, great atmosphere, the owner is super friendly and helpful in ensuring you have a dish you will love!

I have never had proper Indian food before. I had gone after work with some coworkers and it was wonderful! And I was very happy with the food. The service was good too. But then I had some chai tea. I dont want to exaggerate this because I think it would be doing a disservice to all involved. But it was life changingly good. I had the first sip and had to process what I had consumed. I finished the tea and was heartbroken and enlightened with every sip. I am sad because I know that a regular tea will never make me as happy as this one has. Listen I do not care what you get here I'm sure it's all good. But you must get the tea. It was like $3. And I cannot say this enough you will not spend $3 better. No joke get the tea.

This is probably the most authentic Indian restaurant I have ever been to. Have traveled all over the world, even India 8 times in the last year, nothing compares to this place. The food is exemplary (numero uno Punjabi food) made from fresh ingredients, the service (Jai the owner himself) is superlative, it is as if he has invited you to his home. All round this is what I would term home away from home. Still trying to convince Jai to move to Chicago :)

Saravanan Kandaswamy

Taste is okay. This is my fourth time to their buffet and there is literally no change in their spread. Tandoori Chicken seems fried and other items had more cream and you will feel full by tasting little bit of those ones... Buffet is pricey for the items they have in the spread...

Fran Carroll

The food is very fresh and more buffet choices than other Providence menu’s. We look forward to returning because their menu is much better than other indian cuisines. Especially, we love the personable service. The manager, Jay is very attentive to your needs, details and personable. We met the owner as well. Very welcoming! You will not want another indian restaurant again!

Stu H

Every dish I have tried has been excellent. And the owner is very friendly. They are very accommodating to individual preferences.

Lovely place friendly people great food !

Ruchir Verma

Good food and decent ambience. Quantities of bread ordered were enough. Both veg and non-veg dishes are served here. Not too many veg curry options are there, just the regular ones you find in any other indian restaurant around. Do try their lassi. Staff is very nice and friendly. Parking should not be an issue. They have buffet on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Melanie Haynes

My bf and I decided to dine in house as opposed to getting takeout from Punjab and we are so happy we did. It was a slow night and we expected a great meal and a quite night but we were treated to the owner Jay, sitting down with us and treating us like family. Upon meeting him and getting teased for the spice preferences for our meals, we felt that we were visiting an old friend. Our food was tasty, toasty and, not what you might expect from the little strip it's located in. Our server Ashley was kind and attentive, joking around with Jay and us as she refilled our waters. We will be bringing anyone who visits Rhode Island to Punjab, if only to get picked on by Jay. Please treat yourself to some yum Indian food and Jay and Ashley's kindness! You will truly feel like you belong. :)

Excellent food. Courteous service. They will adjust spiciness to your preference. Throughly enjoyed our meal. I had their chicken korma which was simply delicious. Not insanely spicy but had a touch of heat to it. They bring you a complimentary appetizer of aloo bonda which is something I've not tried before. Excellent with the chutneys they provide.

Punjab is great. Jay, the owner, is fun and personable. The food is unreal, try the lamb curry or any of the soups. Wicked good. The medium spice level is great for people who enjoy spice but don’t want to be overwhelmed.

Love this place. We were frequent flyers when they were in Rehoboth, MA. The food and the hospitality haven’t changed. We’ve tried nearly everything but we always come back for the Kofta and the chicken tandoori. Great cocktails too!...the bar is trendy looking and the interior is gorgeous. Great job Jay! The chutney and the bread are fabulous too...I could just sit and eat that all night while I throw back a few cocktails. You really can’t miss with this place and I’ve tried Indian food all over the states and Europe; this is top notch.

We used to drive from Barrington to Rehoboth for this yummy lunch buffet, now we're driving to Johnston for it! Definitely worth a stop, best Indian lunch buffet we've found in RI and nice people too. Usually have several veg and non veg dishes, always a butter chicken. I'm revising my review upwards. I've eaten from the menu here to now and it was even better. This place really deserves your business!

Went to this resteraunt and was really upset with the events that unfolded. Firstly we were made to wait for around 20 minutes before anyone attended to us. The waitress accidentally gave us an order on the table without us even ordering anything. A few minutes later the owner comes to the table and pursues us to order what he wants us to order. As customers we genuinely believed his words and changed our orders. Not even 30 seconds later , the owner brings the same item that got earlier. When we asked the owner he convinces us saying it’s fresh. It was surely not and did not taste very well as well. The food was below average and took a lot of time to come. We confronted the owner but all that happened was him scolding the waitress. The man is not honest to his customers and never once admitted his mistake despite asking him multiple times why he did so. At the end of the day the events were that unfolded were very disappointing and we left. If you ever do go there don’t fall the nice talking owner he is just getting you to order what is left over in the kitchen. Dear owner, sooner or later everyone will know about your ways.

Delicious! The food is AMAZING. Every single time. I was so happy that a new place that made Indian food had opened, and let me tell you I was not disappointed. The owner is very welcoming and the place was very clean. Very nice atmosphere! I have started to make this a weekly spot to visit.

Been many times. Order different dishes every time and thumbs up every time. The owner Jay is very accommodating and his brother does a great job cooking in the kitchen. I think a surprisingly great selection of CRAFT BEER on tap for an indian restaurant with apparently more to come. Also has the normal domestics. Highly recommend

Food was delicious. Lots of options. Drink prices a little high. Glad to have an Indian restaurant in the area. Will be back.
