REVIEWS OF City Tavern Restaurant IN Pennsylvania

Mike McNamara

What a cool experience. I was in town at a conference and they fit our entire group of 70 people in there upstairs dinning area. The West Indies Soup was fantastic. Only reason for a 4 star is because if you have a group this big They can only do cash for alcoholic drinks but food was amazing. They also talk about the history of the building which was awesome!

Matthew Cinelli

Exquisite food, authentic colonial atmosphere, an experience to remember. You don't need to be a tourist to enjoy City Tavern.

runner 96

Excellent food. Six of us, five different meals and all were outstanding. Service was terrific.

Michele Coyle

Great food and drinks of the Colonial times!

Kevin Lambert

Wasn't what we expected for a place to meet for business. Very touristy and busy for lunch. Food was decent with authentic colonial atmosphere.

Robyn Keller

Loved the atmosphere, everyone is dressed in period clothing. And the food was phenomenal!

Donnie Cox

The City Tavern is awesome food is excellent our Waiter Dillion was awesome

Jennifer Bessette

Cool old-timey restaurant. The wait staff are dressed in period clothing, and the menu is based on dishes from the colonial era. Delicious food, and cool and interesting drinks. I had the raspberry shrub with champagne... It was delightful and refreshing in the summer heat.

jay caneyeball

An ABSOLUTELY wonderful experience. The moment we walked in the door wonderful aromas were in the air. The old house slash tavern .the old clothes an a guy playing the harp ..awesome. everytime food came out to another table great smells wafted through the room. Was quite hard to decide on what to eat it all sounded so good smelled so good and looked so good. Seems everyone around us was having something different. We had fried oysters with an awesome dill dip....perfectly prepared. The mushroom toast was so simple yet so tasty. Our dinners were venison. Turkey pot pie and NY strip steak. Meats were cooked perfectly and the Turkey pie was huge and decadent. Table next to us had lobster pot pie and seafood special. Both said food was phenomenal. Bring you readers and a small light source as it is very dark....only candle light...just like the 1800,s. Great food great service great atmosphere. I will be going back at least 14 more times to try everything on the menu. I thought the prices were very very reasonable for all we received A bargain really. Go here

Heather

Definitely a must when visiting Historic Philadelphia. It's a historic landmark with incredible food and service. The best duckling I ever had I had there and they have a good selection of beers. The service is quick and friendly. Eating here is like stepping back in time, with original 18th century recipes, servers in 18th century-appropriate attire and the like. You may even get to see Mr. Thomas Jefferson and Mr. Benjamin Franklin while you are there!

Andrea Wasser Malmud

Wonderful authentic tavern. We love our server Nellie, great historian!

Cave Arnold

A very unique and cool dining experience. We stopped in here to eat after touring independence hall. It was really interesting to see all the wait staff in period clothing. The decor was also period and the plates and goblets were a nice touch. The food and service was good. We would go here again and recommend to anyone visiting the area try it out for the experience.

Karen Podges

Unfortunately we did not have a very good experience here. They put us in the basement with a fairly new waiter. His wait staff skills were terrible. He was barely around and had to ask another wait staff to have him come to our table. We had to ask for more water and for him to clear the table of dirty dishes. He didn't come back to ask how our meal was. He was unaware of the wine list. There was only one other table with patrons in our room so it wasn't like he was over scheduled. I would not return as the staff in other areas of the restaurant seemed new and unaware of how to perform their job.

Jonzey Jonzey

A bit pricey... Excellent food and customer service!!!

Sean Esler

Another fantastic experience! I'm constantly impressed with the food here. The staff is equally amazing and friendly, but the food (and beer) are worth all the hype. The portion sizes are much larger than you would expect for a high quality restaurant of this caliber. These are not sampling dishes, or "tastes of awesomeness." These are full, hefty dishes that will fill you before you can reach the bottom. You may be wanting more, but plan on taking home the leftovers. I had the roasted rabbit and vegetables this time around, and they didn't disappoint. The veggies were not overcooked, and the meat was still plenty tender and tasty.

Victoria Kenyon

This place is worth a visit and the food is good (if pricy), but we had some issues with our service that left one of our party members without food long after the rest of us had been served. The server made it right, but I saw the same thing happen at the table next to us. Hopefully they work on improving service!

Lacy Carmany

Excellent food and service. Step back in time, enjoy the atmosphere, and experience this rare gem. Worth every penny. ☺

Kyle Leonard

Great food and very romantic vibe. People were dressed up and were very kind.

Ryan Gravesande

I love the beer flight! Never eaten here, but the food looks and smells amazing!!

Jean-Francois Désilets

Good food, good service and interesting experience. Worth the price for the experience and trying unconventional dishes. Traditional beers are a nice addition.

Tyler Waite

The restaurant is part of the National Park. Everyone is dressed in Colonial costume. The servers provide rich details about the buildings history. The food and drink are based on recipes from the time period. We had no trouble being seated right away. Perhaps because it was a rainy Sunday in February.

Joseph Zaher

Fabulous food and service. Historic atmosphere.

Amy Burge

This was a highlight on our trip to Philadelphia! We came for the historical interest, and I wasn't expecting much on terms of food, but, WOW! It was amazing! I had the beef medallions and my husband had the turkey pot pie. Both were so good; I would love to taste everything on this menu! Jason F. was our server and he was perfectly attentive and really helped make our experience the best it could be. Thank you! If we are ever back in Philly, we will definitely come again!

David Cattai

Portions are generous , the food tasted good. The service is where we had a real problem. Waiter had to come back twice to confirm our order, we asked to substitute vegetable for the egg noodles/ we didn’t get either. All of Our water glasses were empty several times- to his defense ( how could he know when they’re not see thru glass) but if he was around more often he would have caught it. Then time for coffee and desert- we received our desert but never received Coffee- yes it was on the bill. (Water glasses were empty again also) So Food is Good( a little high price for my liking) especially based on the service. The history content in the restaurant was an added surprise. Probably won’t be going back “on my Dime”.

Peter Smyth-Hammond

This was a really fun spot to go for lunch! The food was awesome, try the Pepper Pot soup, delicious, and the history behind it was wicked cool! All the staff are dressed in colonial period attire, and act the part, which was fun, and the ambiance was fantastic!

Danielle Medina

The food was okay. The puff pastry on the pot pit was a little undercooked but full of flavor. The shrub was delicious. Our server was Alyssa and she was just wonderful. Would recommend to anyone coming to Philly for the first time.

Andrew Ouverson

Cool place for the history, but not much more than that.

B. Barnard

I enjoyed the beer sampler.

Will Rusch

Place looked nice. Was told that their card machine was down, and they were accepting cash only. This was after my son and I were already seated. Seemed suspect seeing as no other guests that were seated at the same time as us were being told that, or getting up to leave. Oh well, they must have enough business that they can afford to turn some away.

Kendra Bourne

Every part of this experience was excellent. The food was incredible. Our server, Jay, was wonderful and described the history behind what we ordered. Absolutely will recommend this to others who visit Philadelphia. Dining with history was such a unique and awesome experience.

Robin Lee

It has to been twenty years since I have been to City Tavern. It is nice to read the history and the food was great. It just didn't seem as friendly as before. But still recommend going if you have never been.

Kirsten Barnes

We had read about the City Tavern online ahead of time and were curious. We were convinced when we found the info card at the visitor center that had some history and a coupon. We made plans to go at lunch but did not have a reservation. We loved the City Tavern. The location and ambiance were great, but the food was delicious and the dining experience very enjoyable. Greg, our server, took great care of us and helped us navigate the menu with my niece who has celiac disease. We were able to choose an item off the menu and adjust it to mom gluten and dairy free and she said it tasted wonderful which is a huge compliment with her diet. I had the Colonial Turkey Pot Pie and was filled full with an equally delicious meal. We will be back again when we come to Philadelphia.

Dean G

Historic building, Great food, and frequently you will get to speak with Chef Walter

Bethany Travis

american food... super tasty. I wish there were more places like this around town. I will be back with my coworkers. Kinda of like a restaurant in Los Angeles I liked to visit.

Maryanne Dolci

Good food. Very historical building. This is where the contential Congress meet back on the 1700's. To realize that our for Father's meet here to start our nation. Very interesting

Christopher W

Great food and drink menu. We loved the candle lit atmosphere and the period dress. We will definitely go back when we are in the area again.

Vaso Ekstein

I was hopeful that I would have a great experience but instead I found a finger nail my seafood linguini dish. And when the Manager came out, 10 minutes later, he tried to tell me he could not identify the object. Luckily, I took a photo before it was taken away.

Tamir Oren

We loved the experience though almost no vegan options

Alison Kreutzer

I knew the ambiance was fun, but WOW -their food blew me away!! So So SO tasty!! I had Chicken Madeira and my friend had the beef tips over egg noodles with mushroom sauce. Both were delicious. Be a part of history and eat well! (it's a little pricey though)

Alex Chavez

Ordered the crab cakes first order was cold in the middle. The server takes it away brings back an other order that one colder in the middle than the first. After that just got the rest of the check and paid and left. Should use one of those Emmy awards to figure out how to serve warm crab cakes

garyr leister

Unbelievable. So nice. Large portions. Reasonable prices.

Hatx ttt

Really cool food and awesome staff, but there dressed up like the 1700s

Bas van der giessen

Good and fresh food. Order the salmon witch one was great. Big peace of salmon. The atmosphere was also great. Maybe a little bit over priced the menu.

Suzanne Chadwick

Very nice place. It can get a bit loud, but the harp player is amazing! You will not leave hungry! :) If you like history and food, this place is for you. Walk ins and reservations both accepted. Casual or formal attire is fine.

Joe Alonzo

My sister and I love this place.. old style colonial restaurant and food.. the menu, food, deserts, drinks are very good.. the beers are made from original recipes from the forefathers.. good and strong.. staff are dressed in colonial fashion.. big place but it does get packed.. can't wait to go back and have some beers

Kevin Mandell

Delicious (mostly) colonial recipes. Excellent service and atmosphere. I will eat there again.

Carla Buck

Me and Hubs celebrated our Wedding Anniversary Friday night (the 13th ~ full moon

Star Batton

Breads were delicious.... meal was overrated and bland. The colonial period time dress, I found to be quite disturbing. #notsorry

Mark Burge

The staff was very welcoming. Jason F was our waiter and he knows his stuff. He was able to explain the menu itens and the history behind them. The food was amazing. The bread we started off with was delicous. I had the Turkey Pot Pie and it hit the spot. Thank you.

Johnathan Grover

I loved the colonial dress and atmosphere of the establishment. They use old style solid wood tables and benches and you get a real feel for what life may have been like back then. I mainly went there to try the colonial beers but ended up getting their Basil Shrimp as well. Wasn't disappointed in the slightest food was delicious and the beers were great.

Charles Montgomery

Food is fantastic. Historical recipes, old tavern atmosphere and wait staff in period dress really add to the Philadelphia experience.

Liberty Carter

The food was incredible and our server Jay was fantastic! Great recommendations, cocktails and desserts. Certainly a great meal to celebrate our anniversary!

Deanna Dierking

Loved the colonial atmosphere, staff in period dress, and the amazing history. George Washington's headquarters and at one time the unofficial white house. Food and the drinks were very very good, the staff and manager very personable... would love to finish the anothropological history with manger James! But I would say a bit overpriced.

Dursd 446

Good food and cool atmosphere. Nice place to bring kids. Our Waitress was really weird though. She was pouring us water and we asked how her day was going to which she responded “it’s cold outside”. She was really nice though so don’t hesitate to go.

Kevin Yee

Kinda pricey, but a fun experience. I loved the food. I got the duck, a few of our party got the pot pies, pork and beef medallions. Beautiful old tavern, lots like Gadby's tavern in Washington DC.

Stephen Shecora

Best place to come for the founding fathers beer samplers. I come here every year for them.

David Corkhill

The food is good enough to overcome any feelings that the place is cheesy.

Vito Coletto

Great food & ambiance!

Kevin Brothers

Expensive but worth the experience to be waited on by period staff. Food was really good.

Chris Doerr

Great food but the menu is based on period dishes so don't expect much light fare here. We dropped in for lunch without a reservation on a Saturday and there was no wait. We sat outside with our dog and the waitress provided water with some ice. Highly recommended!

Christina Verme

This place is so warm and if you love history this is a place you must see. Go through the whole house and check out the park in the back! Love it here!

Helen Drust

The restaurant is very authentic in its portrayal of a 17th century restaurant. The staff was accommodating in light of my husband's mobility issues. Unfortunately the wait time for our food was unusually long. We had children with us and it was really difficult to amuse them. This restaurant has a limited menu, so I suggest reviewing choices online before going. Portions are generous, but pricey. Good food and accommodating staff make this a good restaurant. Downside is extended wait time between ordering and actual delivery of the main course. Also be prepared for higher prices and limited food choices.

Nicole McDermott

Atmosphere is noisy but really fun. Food was amazing! It is worth the price tag. Staff was great.

Carrol Cass

Loved the atmosphere. The waiter was very attentive and told us the history of some of the food.

Greg Steigerwalt

The experience with Independence After Hours was great... Delicious food and great entertainment.

Hey Babe

This place is terrible. I wouldn’t take kids here. the beer is disappointing. All of the food actually tastes like it was made 1000 years ago and they sat us alone on the top floor were it was rather uncomfortable.

David McIntyre

Really great food with a colonial theme.

Garfield Fisher

Very good beer selection. I had the mushroom toast and the sampler beer pallet. Very historic location in Philadelphia. Definately a place to visit.

Jeff U.

This restaurant is full of rich history as well as delicious food! Very wide variety of options. Zach is a great waiter!!

Patti Bucher

The restaurant week menu was well done, delicious, and a good introduction to the restaurant for a first time visit. Friendly and attentive staff. Loved the atmosphere!

Kevin Herman

Trust me when I say that this place is a refreshing view through the looking glass, into a time past where things made sense. The atmosphere is incredible, and the food...if you're not stuffing your face and exclaiming, "MMMMM!!!", then you need to taken around back and beaten with an iron pipe. Haha! I went a few years ago, but I still recall this as an experience all the worthwhile!

Joshua Quigley

Looked great and great idea for the location. A bit pricey what sadly the service did not reflect. Food was good!

Kevin Almirall

Revolutionary War style people made for a fun experience

Sara Martinez

american food, yeah, super delicious. The service was very helpful and welcoming. The prices are well within reason for the quality. This place has positive reviews for a reason.

Don Hagen

Get over the cost - it is worth it. Got Fried oysters, mushroom toast, and duck sausage and passed them around as appetizers. The oysters were bland to me, but others loved them. The duck sausage tasted like a good pork sausage. I didn't get to taste the mushroom toast, but I was told it was delicious. The corn chowder was creamy and tasty. The pepperpot soup had an overabundance of black pepper. There were several types of free bread supplied, and they were all tasty. I got the steak and shrimp. Only 2 shrimp, but jumbo. Steak was generous in size, done just as I asked (RARE) and I cut it with a butter knife and it was delightful. There was essentially zero fat/gristle. Several in the party got the pot pie and everyone raved about it. The beef medallions looked great and were pronounced great. The venison was said to be tough, but it was asked for to be done medium, which I believe toughens it. Everyone was sated, and there were big eaters in the party, and clean plates were the rule. You can find cheaper, but not better.

Sophie Brygidyr

Had the AMAZING pork chop w mashed potatoes. Opted out of the sauerkraut, not a fan. Really fun with the candlelight and the ghost ladies serving you. Lol. Great fried oysters and the Martha's raspberry shrub to drink!

Wallace Harvey

Nice, friendly staff. But, the food is not good. More of a gimmicky takeoff on old style colonial dining. There are better options in Old Town for sure.

Lisa Shirley

I came here through recommendation and was intrigued by the history of this place. The service was good and the food even better. My waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and was very enthusiastic in giving me a little history lesson on some of the beverages. My crab cake appetizer was soft, moist and flavorful. My salmon main was cooked perfectly. The waitstaff was dressed as if we were in the 1700's which I found quite entertaining. This is definitely a place to check out if staying in Philly. I will come again the next time I am in the area.

Jim O

Really cool place! Walking distance from many other attractions around the Liberty Bell. Really good food, moderately priced. White tablecloth service and atmosphere were spot on! Lots of history in the building. They invite you to walk around to see other rooms. Only drawback is the restrooms are on the third floor.

Bryan Free

Great food and fun. We visited as part of an after hours historic tour. Highly recommend.

Colonial appearance inside and out, colonial decor, upscale menu and delicious food.

Dan Collis

EXCELLENT ambiance. Wonderful food.

Lisa Gates

Food was excellent. Service was timely. They kept tavern much like the original and gave history of Tavern itself

John Richardson

First class restaurant. Very cool historical and amazing food. Even had a harp player.

Daniel Scheetz

Excellent must experience. We were there with a group. The service and food was excellent.

Hector Altamirano

We enjoyed the live harp player. The staff's uniforms took back in time. I would go back again.

Eamonn OMahony

Authentic historic building with servers in period costume. Food solid and varied to a degree, mashed potato with everything. Good service and really period experience.

Nancy Grayson

This restaurant is a fantastic place to dine. The atmosphere is cozy and the food is amazing.Love this place.

Tyler & Kristen Ames

Excellent place for fun experience! Food was incredible and different.

Kevin Williams

Definelty a must see and eat when you visit. try the beers that our forefathers have brewed. spot on recipes.

DJ Rodriguez

Very nice historical tavern with period recipes. Quiet when we visited late afternoon. Conveniently situated and walking distance to other attractions. Food was unique and tasty.

shari poinsette

Great food and historic atmosphere

J

Anyone who is from Philly will tell you it’s a tourist trap...and it is. Overpriced frozen food served by weirdos is costumes.

phil casto

Place was great! Sat outside in the garden, which was nice. My wife and I both had the specials (seafood pasta and Ben Franklin chicken) Bread and beer made with 1800s recipes! Used the BOGO coupon in the WHERE magazine to have a nice dinner without breaking a sweat.

Jason Lancaster

Great food and service! Colonial-style food and atmosphere. The staff are dressed in 18th century clothing. Chef Walter Staib even has his own series, “A Taste of History”

Kendall Redburn

Great food, amazing atmosphere. Beautiful historic home and a menu as unique as it's history.

Michael Singer

Food and atmosphere are good, definitely a place to stop if you're into the old world experience

Dasra Vaknis

The location and ambiance were great, but the food was delicious and the dining experience very enjoyable. Would recommenced.

Jason Franzke

City Tavern offers what is ostensibly American/colonial fare in a historic setting with waitstaff in colonial attire. If you are willing to pay a lot extra for that, then you will not be disappointed with your meal at City Tavern. Our waiter was not attentive at all. So much so that I got up myself to refill all the water glasses at our table and nobody seemed to care or notice. We waited an inordinately long time for our food. When our food arrived, it was decent but far from great considering the taste and value for the price. In short, the food is just okay and the service is pretty lousy.

Zach Austin

Lot of history in this place and alot of great people that we learned about history books.

Andrew Joos

I'm sorry we were either here on an off night, or the establishment is riding on a previous history of good service and preparation. We arrived for a 7:00 reservation and were seated upstairs. We ordered a round of drinks and then first course shortly after. We weren't clock watching as we were active in conversation. My soup was a New England clam chowder, but served lukewarm. But having no opportunity to point that out, I ate it. At the time the bowl was cleared, I finally had an opportunity to report on the temperature. I ordered a second glass of wine when the entrees were served but it never arrived. The entree, a lobster pot pie, was very good. While the soup was removed from the check, the lax service discourages me from returning and to offer a word of caution to anyone who considers dining here.

Henry Levesque

this restaurant is Lovely I feel like I'm in 1780 the beer flight was excellent and honored our for father's while the duck was cooked to perfection.

Michael Walker

Never been there. Will go someday hopefully

Ilette Jackson

Loved the "period" theme. Our waiter Jason was on point all the way around.

Lisa Greer

So good! A taste of colonial times - very cute and such a treat!

Kathleen Morouse

Great food, drinks, and atmosphere.

Dene Cassells

The atmosphere definitely evokes an 18th century tavern, though it is worth noting that this is not the original tavern that (supposedly) stood on this spot during Revolutionary War times. Still, it makes for a perfect setting to enjoy recipes and drinks from and inspired by that era.

Daniel Geroni

Great restaurant! If yr in Philadelphia. Go! Nicest people in the world!

April Esler

It was an incredible experience. The corn chowder is simply excellent! No complaints from anyone else on the food. Seafood was fresh, rabbit was cooked well.

John G. Howard

As seen on Drinking Made Easy! The locale of the original Independence Day celebration in July 1776!

Jim Kee

Never have I had a bad meal here

Mike Graney

Unique place, good food

Theodore Hoffman

Everything here is good. It is a little expensive. It cost us about $100 each with beer, wine and dessert. The place is absolutely worth the price. The historical building is wonderful and the food is better.

Anna Sh

Convenient location, colonial era theme dressed waiters and good food. We took smoked salmon salad , salmon entree and shrimp cocktail . Be careful with a shrimp cocktail )) it comes with a spicy sauce )

Gregory Collins

A nice place for families, and for adults looking for a quieter meal (they'll seat you in a different dining room). Excellent food every time. A wide range of fun menu options, including some historic recipes. Great desserts and some unique adult beverages. Prices are a little high, but generous portions and the ambience make it worth it every now and again.

Jaclyn

This is one of my family's go to spots in the city. They don't come to the city often but when they do, they come here. It's a historical landmark turned restaurant and even the servers are in traditional dress. The food is rather tasty. I would recommend the Mushroom Toast for the appetizer with the Lobster Pot Pie for the entree. As for dessert, the creme brulee is good but I found the sugar crust on top to be too thin and not caramelized enough.

Lisa Levine

Delicious food, great atmosphere & server! I organized an event for a fanclub of a show set in late 1700's. The event coordinator (Phil) took care of everything & all went well. I highly recommend one of their specialties "Turkey Pot Pie w/side of noodles". The noodles are served with brown gravy, but I asked for butter & they were accommodating. Great atmosphere for a luncheon or a romantic dinner

Allen Kelly

Uniquely Revolutionary! Great drinks and a really old world feeling.

sophia lennox

I love this place!! They have great staff and great food! I love going there. The environment is very comfortable. It is a little pricey, but it's a good experience :)

Tiffany Daniel

If you like beer variety this is the place to hit. They have a good selection and recently they added new ones. They make their own beer so this is as unique as it gets when it comes to beer. I have always been a lover of berry beer (hint: Belgium), and I really like their Fruit Beer. Not just that but the place is super cool with two floors. Recommended!

Rby G

History nerd here. Brought a friend visiting the US for the first time and this was exactly the perfect kind of touristy historical place. We got the turkey pot pie and rabbit, both were delicious. Portions were huge (so much pasta, why?? Ha) Enjoyed the array of breads in the beginning.

Joanne Hendrickson

Currently closed on Mondays. I wish they updated their house before making the trip there. I was so excited to go there. Call ahead of time to make sure they are in fact open.

Mary Cuteri

It was great. Loved the old time feeling. Food was excellent.

Dina Curry

Me and some of my friends went here a couple of months ago. Our waiter was very pleasant. I ordered the chicken dish and it was very tasty.

Allyson Jennings-Johnson

I could not believe how great everything tasted. The atmosphere is perfect for a unique American heritage experience.

Francis Green

All in one and all time favorite restaurant. Delicious food and friendly staff. Awesome location.

Jacqie Miles

It was ok, not worth going back the customer service wasn't very good waiter kept forgetting things my spoon for the soup didn't tell us what type of ice tea they served just brought us raspberry flavor it was nasty. My god-daughter complain that the chicken was under cooked and the manager attitudes was horrible telling her it seem alright to him. Won't be going back there again that's for sure.

Matty B

Very nice, cozy themed restaurant with decent beer and wine selection. Pricey, but not over the top. Food was excellent but wait staff seemed to struggle keeping caught up. Seemed a bit short-staffed. Lighting was a bit of an issue. Had the pork chop which was excellent.

Brian Glodek

This place is amazing! EXCELLENT food, staff, and atmosphere!!! Several items are original recipes of founding fathers or their contemporaries that include but are not limited to biscuits, breads, beers created by Washington, Franklin, and Jefferson, as well as Martha Washington's recipe for chocolate cake. On a personal note, if you enjoy duck this is where you need to go for it. The skin is perfect, the meat moist and tender, the portion plentiful, and the presentation perfect! The next time you find yourself in Philly make it a point to dine at the City Tavern. While it can be expensive it is completely worth the cost.

Steven Dycus

We were in town with a group that traveled for business purposes. Several of us elected to try this place for a nicer meal that didn’t include Philly Cheesesteaks. The reviews were good and our observations were mirror images of others we read — good menu selections — tasty well prepared entrees — excellent presentation — fun period focused ambiance and decor. Felt very authentic from a historical perspective. Wait staff were gracious and attentive as well as informative. All menu items are individually priced; so expect a higher priced dinner. I have included several photos to help capture the rich heritage of this period in history as well as the high quality food presentation.

Steve Sauve

Great place that presents a colonial atmosphere. The entire building takes you back in time as do the helpful staff. The food is authentic and delicious. Prices are high but it's we'll worth it.

Bryant Gabriel

Great bread. Great beer. Greg (waiter) was awesome. Definitely a place you need to go.

D. K.

We've been going to City Tavern for years. Interesting menu blending the old and the new. Since we were gonna be in Philly over Thanksgiving decided to spend it here. Perfect choice! The food and the setting were amazing. A bit expensive but so worth it.

jillanne bagnell

Love the history of the City Tavern. The food was was wonderful & our server was knowledgeable and efficient. Location within walking distance to other historical sites.

Robert Dreisbach

Great people, atmosphere, and food.

Tiffany Daniel

not dub

Great history and fun for grabbing a beer in between the sights of this fantastic historic section of Philly, but not a place I would go back to just for the beer or food. Enjoy it for what it is!

Matthew Fudge

Loved the founding fathers beer flight. A perfect end to a day of historic tours and museums.

David Conway

Great atmosphere. Good service. Excellent food. The waiters dress up in colonial garb.

Christa Geyer

Delicious food and refreshing libations in a wonderfully colonial establishment. Service was excellent as well! (Thanks for taking such great care of us, Kelli!!!) I thoroughly enjoyed the beef bourguignon, while the hubby feasted on seafood pasta. The finishing touches to our meal were the wonderfully creamy vanilla creme brûlée and peach and ginger cobbler with pecan topping.

Sally Bitar

Came here to check it out after my coworker emphasized the cool history behind this place. I can definitely say I was not disappointed! I did not get any food, but the beer and ambience was great. Would definitely come back here next time I’m in Philly.

Brian Corrie

Total tourist trap, but the turkey pot pie is legit. Kids chicken finger order is more than enough for two.

jim mcguire

I love everything about this place. I love the location, the history, the food, and the great hospitality!

Nick Barrella

Wonderful atmosphere. Excellent service Outstanding food. Need I say more?

Ken M

Had a great experience, our Waiter Armando was wonderful, meals tasted great, the pot pies and seafood pot pie are awesome. Yea it's a bit expensive but that's Philly. Paid $40 to park my car in the hotel so a $25 meal didn't seem too bad to me. I will go again next time I am in town.

Robert Sulentic

Historic location, excellent food and service.

Anastasiya Pidhayna

Ehh not worth the money and the food was below average. Chose this place because we thought there would be an experience but besides dressed servers, squeaky floors, and old tabletop setting nothing special. The food wasn’t that good and took forever even though they weren’t fully booked. I would recommend choosing some better places close by.

Our treat restaurant when we visit Philly. Colonial Tavern with staff in time period dress. Food is delicious. We've had the crab cakes, the pork chops, the duck, the seafood specials- all have been very good.

We were there for an Indepence Hall After Hours dinner tour! Food was AMAZING...staff were FABULOUS and we loved the character acters! Highly recommend this place!

First, the atmosphere is wonderful and all the staff are in period clothing, which is kinda cool. Second, the food is sublime. Being a vegetarian, it is usually difficult for me to eat at cool places, as there are very few options. Believe it or not there is a really cool veggie option here. The tofu recipe is from a letter penned by Benjamin Franklin. They serve the tofu over spaghetti, veggies, and about 6 sticks of butter. Would highly recommend if you are in Old City area, be prepared for higher than average prices though.

Just so fun traveling back in time; wait staff is dressed in period clothing, tall tables with spindle chairs, old wood floors, lots of crown moulding, pewter cups - really lovely! Food was delicious and perfectly cooked, but service was slow and inconsistent. Biggest issue was noise level (rooms are echoey), but we still had fun and could hear above the din. Definitely a splurge but great night out if you want a more personal feel for all the history of this fine city! Try the beer flights named after Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, etc. - awesome!
