REVIEWS OF Bistro Barberet & Bakery IN Pennsylvania

Justin Bailey

The details that I have learned surrounding the way this bakery treats it's employees is astounding to say the least. Not only is the food over priced but the ethics behind the management of the bakery is lacking. I DO NOT recommend this location at all.

Ron M

Great ambiance and decor, and food was excellent!

Debra Rowell

Lovely little bakery attached to a bar. Everything is good and reasonably priced

Shilea Pearson

I absolutely love coming to dine here. The food & service are always divine. Plus finishing off your meal with the desserts up front is fantastic!! Love it!

aj NUSE

Waiter was slow as hell food ok.

Christina Paquin

Amazing service along with amazing desserts.

Marc Achenbach

Gorgeous and delectable array of pastries breads and confections, but don't miss out on their truly well executed food and service!

Wayne Hummer

Nice intimate atmosphere quiet enough to have a conversation and loud enough to keep those conversations yours. Service was prompt and server had a strong understanding of the menu. Food was excellent. House red complimented Hanger Steak well. Lamb Sausage had a good spice to it and was served over cous cous with butternut squash, it was an interesting combination that worked so well together. We had the smoked salmon appetizer as well that was a perfect way to start our evening. I highly recommend the creme brulee for desert.

We visited this place as part of a food tour of Lancaster. We were offered any dessert in the case and a cup of coffee or tea as part of our visit. Walking in, there's a case of beautifully colored macarons and some specialty bonbons to the right and a long glass case full of the most beautiful, perfect and delicious desserts of all shapes and flavors. Near the register, there are some savory items for sale. Past the register and down the hall is where you will find the entrance to the bistro. The menu is made up of French classics, everything that came out looked delicious. It was before dinner time and the place was pretty quiet but our tour guide recommended reservations for dining should we return in the future. I would love to come back to this place, the ambiance is classy but not stuffy, prices are moderate for the quality, at least for the desserts we had.

If it wouldn't be for a hostess who was trying to give us the worst possible table (situated by the entrance to the hallway leading to the kitchen and probably to the bathrooms too) while having 2/3 of the tables available I would gladly gave them 5**. AMBIANCE: modern and cozy with a wonderful french music of the past century on the background but not too noisy for keeping a conversation (a big + now days) FOOD: Everything we've tried (except a pasta dish which was tasty but a bit boring having just 3 ingredients in it) was wonderful in taste, interesting and quite different from the other french places we've been. The highlights were Pork pate, Duck salad, Blood sausage and Salmon main course. SERVICE: Other then the front of the house was very nice, efficient and professional. VALUE: was very good and adequate to experience received. CONCLUSION: MUST return when in the area. P.S. After few more visits I am happy to say that the front desk as well as the rest of the service were just wonderful. We've received a very warm and friendly reception from everyone who's interacted with us at today's brunch meal. And the food was amazingly tasty (had Charcuterie, Paté en croute Royale, Crispy Confit Chicken Leg and Fromages and everything tasted VERY delicious. It's time to upgrade to 5** well deserved!

mary fusco

The coffee shop and bakery offerings top notch. The aesthetics of the coffeeshop...not great...long counter on one hallway wall...no Windows or table seating. But baked goods are a delight!

Alrealon Musique

Best French bakery in Pennsylvania!

vep233

Amazing pastry! Even in France we rarely see this level of quality and beauty in a bakery, I highly recommend this place

Marc Breton

Amazing service, even while underdressed. Food was absolutely insane, near perfect execution! Definitely a top Lancaster spot.

Dan McCormack

By far the best pastry shop in the country and the region. The bistro is excellent but desert makes any meal a special treat. Our favorite restaurant in Lancaster city.

car gon

Love the pastries.

S. D. G.

meh. For the cost I'd expect more benefit. We got everything we came for. We liked everything we got, but as a complete experience it wasn't astounding. Service was active, somewhat attentive, somewhat lost. Food was good not great. Couldn't compare to a French bakery focused on French bakery.

DoReMi Fabrications

We were there for lunch. The bakery in the front had creations the likes of which were far and above anything I've seen in the county. I have been classically trained, but these were of a quality usually only seen in books! I had the Le Provençale tartine, wonderful. My wife had the quiche lorraine, she felt it might have been the best she's ever had. Pomme frites were awesome. Tomato soup outstanding, French onion soup, also wonderful. You could tell that the onions were cooked low and slow bringing out all the sweetness, the Gruyere melted on it was perfect. Dessert: L'opera - balance of sweetness and espresso was perfect, creme brulee, very nice as well. Well worth whatever you pay for it. Service was also done well. Bathroom (men's room) was immaculate. Nothing to complain about here. Cannot wait to go back.

Shiloh Dara

The macarons were delightful, personally a fan of the coffee and vanilla. The service was prompt and polite. Would absolutely come back for another treat!

lisa N

Wonderful owner and staff a little hard to see from the street directly across from old art store... good selection... nice bar great deserts...

Hannah Kapchinske

Food is fantastic and servers are very friendly and helpful.

Jasmyne Patton

The coffee is great and the staff is wonderful. Always remember exactly what i order and how i like it

Sam Norton

Food is okay, but nothing special you can't get elsewhere at a better price. Staff was not helpful nor very motivated, poor service. Overpriced hype.

Dawn Patrick Lancaster County, PA Realtor

Had to take a moment and let these beautiful pastries sink in awhile to make a decision! What detail and care goes into making these desserts! The 7 layer chocolate flourless cake and the yellow dome guava dessert were the best for me! Will be back again for dining and some more desserts! So special to have this kind of treat here in Lancaster!

Tanya B.

I only went to the bakery part of this place, but I went several times. If you like a good French bakery, you will love this place. The small desserts (of which there are many kinds) are absolutely beautiful and delicious. Each one is a miniature work of art.

Carrie Chanel

Outstanding! If you are looking for French- I mean real French- this is your place! I had a feeling when I saw the bakery that I was in for a wonderful brunch and I was right- the bread, even the butter- the quiche, the salad - the coffee OMG! Wonderful! Everything was top notch A+! I’m from LA where we have some fabulous French bistros and until now had some pretty disappointing French type fusion meals in town at other establishments- the French owner was super friendly and thanked us on the way out and I honestly just wanted to hug her for having such a wonderful place- I’m going to check out the happy hour next - it’s Tues-Fri I think 5-7- crab cakes here I come!

Valerie Stephan

Oh Bistro Barbaret, theres not a thing in your dessert case not to love! And your prix fixe menu is the best deal in town!

Pablo García

Being in the store alone is a beautiful experience. The colors and decorations are beautiful as you can see in the pictures. The staff was very friendly and patient, specially with me taking pictures and trying to choose what to get. The pastries were incredible!! A great combination of flavor and beauty. From all the pastries I bought, my favorite one was the fruit tart. I did not stay at the restaurant, but I am looking forward to come back.

Ally Perry

Good salads. My friends had a burger and soup. He said the burger was just good.

Amanda Johnsen

Dessert selection is amazing. Everything looks and tastes so good.

Allen R

Fantastic French pastries in the bakery. The restaurant is good too, but it isn’t as amazing as the bakery in the front.

ANA RUIZ

The food is phenomenal and the staff is friendly.

North Star

Just excellent!

Maggie Shaak

Awesome and unique candy and bake shop. Haven't tried the bar and restaurant in the back but would love to.

Aaron Gantz

Absoultely delicious French desserts and pastries. Anything you order will be good! The whole experience took me back to Paris. The service was wonderful too.

Colleen Soukas

Awesome! Does not matter if we are there to eat dinner, grab a quick lunch, or just get some coffee and dessert it is always an experience and a pleasure!

Victoria Lawrence

Foie gras is deplorable! Boycott this disgusting and horrific practice! Most states have already outlawed it!

Jeannine Jubeck

We came to barbaret for my Mom’s 80th Birthday for lunch. Although the food was very good, the service was probably the worst I have ever had. We’re all too happy to have a leisurely lunch, but 3 hours? The food was VERY slow to come out, it took them a good 30 minutes to cut the cake and bring that out as well. It’s not as if it was terribly busy either. Very Disappointing for.a Birthday meal.

Dylan Crawford

Only been to the bakery but everything is fresh, the presentation and cleanliness is always excellent, there always a strong variety of choices, and not to mention you’d be hard pressed to find some better tasting quick treats in the entire Lancaster county area.

Gold Piilot

i get in so much trouble every time i walk in, but everything is so top notch! the super sized raspberry macarons with whole berries are my favorite

Lynn Walker

How many superlatives may I use???? Absolutely wonderful evening dining out with friends. Gracious hostess, attentive manager from afar, marvelous service from Cala our waitress and an absolutely delicious meal! A perfect evening at Bistro Barberet!!

Susan Bailey

Attentive staff and amazing food!

Jimena Lavalle

Best paistery ever

Krista Chavez

Amazing service, beautiful presentation in the bakery and bistro. These pastries are divine! Absolutely French and some of the best even compared to France. The food is authentic with a bit of American twist, delicious. Express menu is a super value.

Tracey Therrien

Food and staff are just delightful! Chefs mend unbelievable tastes together for ultimate dining experience...the best.

Very rarely do I make an effort to write a review, but after such rude customer service from a female staff today (young with well done make-up), I feel I have to do a courtesy here. I went in at lunch hour (not the best time to go, I get it, but that's also one of the few moments I have available in the day). I was initially helped by a male staff who was pleasant, but as I explained I was looking for a small cake for my wedding, I was passed along to someone who was more "expert" with ordering custom-made cakes. Not only did she roll her eyes at me, she also made sure I was aware that I was inconveniencing her by coming during the lunch hour. I explained to her that I called Saturday and was told to come by Tuesday, in which she responded "pfff! Well it's lunch time of course now is not a good time". She insisted that I was to pay the full $6 per slice for a wedding cake even though I said I'd be happy to order a normal cake since the cake is for only 14 people. Once I asked for a regular cake, she again seem perturbed as she shuffled me to choose some ready made cakes that I could order, which wasn't what I was looking for. However, she claimed this was all that was available. (The male staff, who was much more pleasant, showed me a cake for 14 people that I could've special ordered). She was awful, I just couldn't wait to leave that place. Will not be going there again though I've patronized this business several times. If she needed me to make an appointment, she went about it in all the wrong ways. AWFUL!!! Good lord, girl, customer service is NOT for you. I don’t know what gives anyone the right to treat someone so poorly. I will not be returning to this place. However, to be fair, I have had dinners in the restaurant and it was awesome. Wait staff in the restaurant also top notch. I suppose you can't let a sour grape spoil the bunch. For this reason, I give it two stars.

kenny wu

Fantastic place for food and gathering. Excellent bakery and delicious lunch and dinner food. Good menu choices. Friendly staff.

elizabeth richards

Truly phenomenal food

Ken Kiedrowski

Amazing restaurant and bakery. You will think that you are in Paris. How did Lancaster ever get such a wonderful establishment. 5 stars are not sufficient.

William Levan

Great cocktails, bakery very impressive, fair pricing. Macarons were decent, yet food a bit less inspired than expected. Id buy jars of their house jam. Worth the visit

Edgar Rousselin

We had a wonderful dinning experience. Food was awesome. Service was very professional. No unnecessary interruptions. We felt very welcome from our arrival until we closed the bakery door. A must go restaurant and bakery.

Andrew Jones

Their baguettes are the real deal. My wife dreams about them. The restaurant its a hidden gem. The food is excellent, upscale but comfortable atmosphere. My family is crazy for the macaroons.

Jason Bowman

Stopped into the baker shop, absolutely stunning deserts and pasteries.

Jose Mendez

Excellent selection of pastries and the restaurant is great. Good service, local ingredients, nice selection of entrees. Would go back any time.

Ana W.

The front is the pastry shop/coffee bar, and if you pass thru to the back there is the restaurant. The atmosphere is very chic/special occasion/ "I live my bourgeois best life" and the food is amazing. Also the cocktails are amazing. The waitstaff is highly competent. Pricey for Lancaster but worth it. You can go just for the bar/cocktail happy hour if you are trying to impress a date but are on a burrito budget.

Hannah Buckwalter

Pricey but mostly worth it

Daniel DeMarco

Excellent experience here. Atmosphere is a modern take on classic art deco. Service was very good (thanks Christopher). Food was incredible, as were the pastries. This is a great spot for a date.

Trisha Haldeman-Gantz

I doubt you'll find a better macaron in town.

no ttodaysatan

Desserts, best macaroons, something to satisfy every sweet tooth

James Hicks

The bakery is absolutely astounding here. How lucky Lancaster is to have such a unique and skillful bakery in their midst! Don't discount this place for a quick coffee on your way to work or errands, it will definitely make your morning!

June Wallace

We are new to the Lancaster area and booked this restaurant on Open Table. I commented on the bread and was told it was flown in from France. Make sure to take a pastry home for breakfast. We will take friends here soon. We already booked it for dinner before a concert at Fulton Theater. We have eaten in the DC , Central Virginia area in fine restaurants...this one is on our Open Table list for sure.

Amanda Orson

The best restaurant in Lancaster hands down. Several of the best meals of my life have been here. Estelle is also the kindest, nicest host / owner you can ask for. Go here for wonderful French food and to be treated like family.

Phyllis Fry

The food is so delicious and fresh!!

Rebecca Smith

Delicious pastries. Beautiful entremet. Friendly staff. Lovely, quaint shop. The place is your perfect French bakery in Lancaster City.

Gary Peterson

We have been here many times. Every time the experience and product has been excellent!

Elissa Walton

Amazing desserts everytime and an cozy, friendly bistro with delicious choices

Becky Smith

They never disappoint

Scott Stoner

GREAT food! Great service! Portions small and a little over priced. Awesome desserts!

Clay Knoll

The prices here were a little higher than I expected, but the atmosphere and food quality were above and beyond my expectations. I spent far too much money in the bakery on the way out, but everything was delicious. I'll be back for the salted caramel macaroons.

Carolyn Zerbe

Excellent service. Great food. Fabulous drinks.

E Sryva

If you are looking for true French authentic pastries, this is the place. And its...in Lancaster! I've been to France many times and this is as close to French cuisine you will get without going there. Prices are well suited for the effort. If you just have a HUGE sweet tooth, go and get a full small cake. It will be more cost effective than ordering 5 different types of pastries. They are also cutely small. Of course you can order just separate pastries and have fun doing it. I isually want them all! Good luck!!

Julie Swade

Loved it! Scallops were done just right! And Alex was fabulous!

Jessica Lim

Great coffee, and sweets

Maria Tivoli

I have been to the bistro several times. For brunch and dessert; both great experiences. The food I would give 5 stars!! Thought we would try happy hour! Since it was First Friday for Lancaster, we figured we would make a reservation in case they get busy. Upon arrival we didn't realize that happy hour only applied at the bar... that is 5 ft. from tables. Not a huge deal. We ordered drinks and were unsure if we wanted dinner or apps or just drinks. The bar was full but the tables were not. Of the 15 tables there were 11 tables open, so they were not that busy. No one was waiting for tables. After telling our waitress (Alexis C) that we were just going to do drinks for now, she proceed to say "ohh okay" and then left. Came back and said "since you only want drinks, I am going to close out your tab and have you move to the hallway seating. Thats for bar specials too when the bar is full." Completely shocked, my friend and I looked at each other and were thinking, oh we can't stay at our table for just drinks. What if we wanted to stay for several drinks and then possibly get food? over 70% of the tables were open and available for other guests and there was no one waiting to be seated. It was so rude and out of place. Never had any issues with the service here in the past. One of the best brunch experiences we have had. But this rating is based on this service we experienced that night. Since we were asked to move, we decided to just quickly finish our drinks and leave. I had made a reservation in open table, and thought okay, I will leave a review there to express how this experience was for us. Only to find out that the restaurant canceled my reservation. Why? Because we only ordered drinks? With no reservation in Open Table's system, I could not leave a review, which brought me here. We were very disappointed with the service and hope situations like this are handled better in the future.

Tim Maier

Excellent French Bakery and Bistro. One of the highlights of downtown Lancaster. Just minutes walk from the convention center and Central Market.

Heather Schaeffer

Love the food but I’m so disappointed that I drove all the way to Lancaster because the online hours said it was open on Sunday. I got there and they were closed and the hours on the building say they’re closed. They should be making sure the online times are accurate!

Paola Martinez Jarquin

I would give it a 5 but at the time I came in, I didn't see any of the delicious looking breads and subs I saw in other photos! Only like 3 loafs of bread were available. All the chocolates and little delicate desserts looked so beautiful and from the 5 different things I tasted, they were so delicious too! Just as good as they look! Christian helped us as soon as we walked in and gave us a little verbal tour of the bakery and gave us recommendations of his favorites things to eat there since it was our first time there. He was so pleasant I loved it!

Peggy Stelle

Estelle and Paul and the amazing chefs, waitstaff and bar tenders provided an extraordinary rehearsal dinner for my family of 60 people. it was amazing - the ambiance was perfect, the food was all exceptional and the beverages were perfect. this is a gem and worth the visit. the also provided a magnificent wedding cake - tiered and sheets of yummy deliciousness! thank you thank you thank!

Bruce Schreiner

I keep on coming back here. The display of the items is just appealing with all the colors and order. I am not much for fancy looking food but this stuff looks fancy and tastes great. I am slowly trying many things I never knew existed, and many are becoming favorites for me. The macrons are spectacular and the quiche is excellant. Other things are also favorites but I am still learning names. Wish they started just a bit earlier in the day so I could grab quiche and OJ for a special breakfast at work and a macron or other fancy dessert for lunch but I get that everyone doesn't run on my schedule. I will just grab these items a day in advance.

Tania H

Amazing food! Nice atmosphere. Great service. $$$

Joy Hermalyn

Happy to find a true French patisserie - Coffee excellent, croissant flaky and fresh. A little pricey - over $6 for below, but worth it. Formidable!

Addy Pennella

Love Barberet! Dustin is awesome!! What a culinary experience in downtown Lancaster,Pa.Will be back real soon !

peter reeves

Best in Lancaster. Value and quality.

Alison Horst

The best hot chocolate I've EVER tasted. Silky smooth, not too sweet, perfect smooth chocolate flavor. Amazing.

Ben Schwantes

Lovely restaurant. Decided to visit while spending the night in Lancaster. Our server provided excellent service; she was attentive but don't hover. My wife was a huge fan of her red hair. Excellent appetizers, well prepared and classically French. We both ordered the chef's special, a pasta dish and a fish dish. Flavorful and complex. The pasta was hearty and the fish was delicate and perfectly cooked. Grabbed a few pastries on the way out. Overall, a great experience and a good value. Would like to return some day

Ian Gumbert

Amazing desserts and super friendly staff. All desserts are authentically French and amazing. Highly recommend.

Kevin Goff

Awesome pastries and baked goods at an affordable price!

Tatyana Rodriguez

Love everything at the bakery honestly except for the creme brûlée. Crème brûlée should have a crispy toasted top of freshly melted sugar. The ones that they have at the bakery sitting in the fridge already has the sugar melted and torched on top. The problem with that is it’s not fresh so the sugar on top becomes jelly-like over time because of moisture. So that takes away the whole point of a crème brûlée. But besides that the crème brûlée tastes great!! Although I do suggest that they change that and have the employees behind the counter toast it fresh With a torch before boxing it up. It’s very quick and easy!

greg man

It's like eating a work of art.

Monica Jugnet

Very very good pastries. Good service. Good food.

Elizabeth M

A friend and I went here for dinner and dessert and it was fantastic. Quaint and quiet, staff was very professional and made it such a fun and special night. We ate dinner in the restaurant and then chose a dessert from the front that we ate at our table. It was delicious!

Rich Portmann

What a gem. Best coffee drinks on the planet. Delicious breakfast quiche. Haven’t made it for drinks or a meal...yet. This is a really unique and special place.

brigitte Shelton

Great food, terrific service and loved the dessert shopping at the end of my experience!

Juliana Knight

They have a fantastic happy hour!

Heather Hauser

Always fantastic. Great cocktails, terrific food, best desserts.

Diana Bauer

Feast for your eyes before you feast for your stomach!

Tracy Smith

Everything they serve is delicious from the bakery, but their coffee is arguably the best in Lancaster City. For dinner, once again you can't go wrong on their menu but the escargot is fun if you want to try something different.

Michelle Morales

Good food, but pricey.

Tom Malone

Awesome bakery in the heart of Lancaster. Walk in and get swept away to France. Exquisite breads, macaroons, and cakes. Great coffee and a wonderful staff complete the experience.

Michael Good

An elegant, amazing dessert before traveling home! Every time I visit and try one of their new creations I discover a new favorite. They serve works of art that explode with a magnitude of flavors in your mouth. A true treasure of Lancaster and it looks the part!

Louis Heck

Good food, with good service. Nice atmosphere. Would definitely encourage a visit.

Amf Fe

Absolutely amazing atmosphere and service. Meals were perfection and although this is a higher end restaurant it did not feel pretentious or unwelcoming. We eat out often and cannot wait to go back! Kudos to the chefs and front of house staff.

Rajeev Thomas

Very friendly, helpful staff. When you walk in you are taken aback with awe! Because presentation of their pastries = Five stars. BUT Quality, flavor of their pastries we tried = Three stars. Very disappointed. Bought a Napoleon which had puff pastry that was almost burnt. Puff pastry that was left too long in the oven did not help the custard in the Napoleon at all. Tiramisu shoots were good. Opera cake was just mediocre. No distinction between flavors of layers, over powering coffee flavor where chocolate flavors were drowned and non existent. Macrons were just okay, tried Lavender, Pistachio - more sweet than flavorful. This place was visually spectacular but flavors were not there!

S Peters

Very overpriced. Many of the pastries are brought in from a third party supplier. Being charged for his hand made pastries and he doesn't even make them all. Don't be fooled, they're tasty but just not his work. In your reply, your very comments verify the truth of my statement! "We make everything from scratch here/ that our bread and breakfast pastries, ONLY, are actually imported directly from France" When I was in to buy the pastries I was told they are made in house, that nothing was brought in from outside. You've just stated that this is a lie. Not all of your people are making that clear. That's deceptive. I will stop in shortly to talk to you.

Heavenly Love

Enjoyed every moment of our experience here. From the Speakeasy vibe of the restaurant to the different baked goods we took on the road with us! Next time we are in the area will be visiting this Barberet first and foremost!!!

Robin S Myers-Ojea

Excellent - very neat restaurant. Enjoyed our time and the food was exquisite!! Can't wait to go again.....

julie gerhart

Received a pastry for a Valentines gift from a friend....oh my goodness, it was beyond delicious.....this is a must visit place for sure.

Karen Morrow

We live in a city in Pennsylvania about 35 minutes away and always make a plan to bring out of town company here. Restaurant food and presentation are always amazing. We have overnight guests pick an item from the Bakery to have for breakfast the next day. Thanks for creating this Restaurant, Cedric!
