We've got the feddbacks of people like you who are using the services and products of The Refectory Restaurant and Wine Shop (Restaurant) in Ohio.
Now this firm has a rating of 4.7 stars over 5 and that rating was based on 729 reviews.
You must have seen that its rating is virtually the top, and it is founded on a very high number of opinions, so we can be quite sure that the assessment is quite faithful. If people have bothered to give their score when they've done well, it works.
As you know, we do not usually bother to set evaluations when these are correct and we usually do it only if we have had a problem or issue...
This Restaurant corresponds to the category of Restaurant.
A Columbus staple. Beautiful ambiance and impeccable service. Perfect for a special occasion.
Certainly lives up to the hype. Visited during restaurant week and we were not disappointed. Service was wonderful and we were well taken care of. The food was outstanding and cooked wonderfully. Could not have asked for anything more on our visit.
One of my all time favorite restaurants in Columbus. Hands down. From the superb customer service to the ever changing, palate pleasing menu to the elegant atmosphere. This restaurant offers some of the best tasting French cuisine from a superb French chef!
Was there for an Anniversary Dinner. Everything was spectacular. Food was delicious and cooked to perfection. Wait staff was attentive without being intrusive. Acknowledged our anniversary and made us feel special. Will definitely return.
Excellent on service, food and atmosphere.
We we're hear for a staff retirement. We had a blast and we're well taken care of in a private room. The Refectory never disappoints.
Wow. Perhaps the best meal of my life. Had the chefs 5 round course. Every course was a delicious surprise. Had each one paired with special wines. They were perfect. Couldn't finish the main course which was just so upsetting because it was very delicious.
Food is always excellent at the refectory. It is a high-end French restaurant so the prices are fairly high. However, if you are on a budget, they do have a price fix menu in the bar area. If you want this, make sure to ask for a reservation in the bar. Another good time to try the place on a budget is restaurant week. One of my favorite things you can do here is have the waiter ask the chef to surprise you. They will ask what your likes and dislikes are, and the chef will put together a meal for you. Give it a try!
Not many like this place. Great food, excellent service and it's been this way forever.
We went there to celebrate my 30th birthday over the weekend and were a little disappointed. The food and service was good, but the air conditioning was broken while we were there. We were sweating the whole night and it just made it not an enjoyable experience. Probably won’t be back again.
Very well done in every way. Great service great interesting food tastes and presentation. Good atmosphere. Very French like the NYC restaurant's that I expect in NY. Bravo that this chef Brought this here in central Ohio many years ago.
Absolutely incredible service and attention to detail. I've had great service at other restaurants, but The Refectory guest experience is on an entirely different level. Food was excellent, from the appetizers to main dishes to desserts. Requested a cocktail not on the menu and it was made perfectly. Overall this was the best dining experience I've ever had, very highly recommend.
Really sloooo. Wait staff was really nice and the ambience was great but everything took way too long. It took over 2 hours for three of us and we didn't order anything unusual.
Fantastic chamber music series, with an amazing meal!
The wine pairing with my food was just outstanding I will be back!!!!!
You walk in and feel the environment of the place already from the way the restaurant is set up; very classy. Our waitress was amazing. She made sure everything was up to our standards. The only thing was it took a while to get our checks, about 20-25 minutes and my friend had to leave since she had something planned so it made her a little on edge waiting so long.
My friend and I have the same birthday and we went there to celebrate. They mentioned happy birthday at the reception and we got a glass of champagne to toast. We ordered a bistro menu $29.95 for three course meal at the bar section. I believe they change the menu monthly. This is served early evening only, but it’s great and we get same great service. The potion used to be a little small, but now the potion is bigger. Our waiter Nick was very professional and nice. It has been 40 years here and still going strong. Their wine selection is great and you can find not very pricey wine, too!!
It was our 40th wedding anniversary. It was very delightful. We will go back again.
The words can't describe the delightful time we had at Refectory. We went for restaurant week. We have always been nervous to go, thinking it might not be our thing, but on the contrary, it was perfect. We made a reservation, which is what they prefer, and were sat quickly upon arrival. Our server was great. We loved the calming nature, the ambiance and being able to hear each other talk apposed to having to yell or whisper our conversation. The food was absolutely delicious! I'm sure it had to be the best meal in Columbus. We will definitely return (not during restaurant week). We would definitely return for a special occasion. If you haven't been, you definitely need to try The Refectory on Bethel for a memorable night and experience.
The food is unbelievable and the service is the best!! Highly recommend The Refectory for a special occasion.
Amazing food and service
Long term quality, food, wine-refreshments, staff is exceptionally skilled and adapts to guests, atmosphere is inviting, has wide range of events, music, special food-wine spirits events. This visit we had French Country dinner & wine with teo.great friends. Sommelier Chris and Justin assembled the best of what always is a special time.
We just completed a business acquisition and wanted to celebrate with both parties over dinner. We selected Refectory due to the historic elegance and superior quality service. We arrived at the table in three different groups and the wait staff handled us well. We had one significant failure - one of our orders was entered incorrectly and only at kitchen pickup did the waiter discover the mistake and had the other meals delivered tableside and the one arrived 10 minutes later. All the meals were delicious and well presented. Overall a good experience with one well handled mistake.
Took my wife here first time..it’s romantic atmosphere The food was delicious
Wonderful anniversary celebration, great for special occasions!
Phenomenal service, food, and wine selection. Fish was fresh, well plated, and paired perfectly. Thank you for a very enjoyable evening.
I told her my wine was a little too sweet for my taste and she was able to take it off my bill and offer two different other white wines to see which one I would prefer. She was kind, made jokes, and made us really laugh! The employee that refilled my water constantly was amazing also!
Good music, good food,bit pricey
Phenomenal food, wine is Exquisite and the service is outstanding
My boyfriend and I visited this restaurant over the weekend and we were not disappointed! The food was absolutely delicious, the wine choices were fantastic and the staff was amazing! I will 100% visit again! We decided not to order dessert …
The escargot was disappointing, and my scallops were not cooked enough. They have a great wine selection, and the desert was amazing. The creme brulee is excellent
Was excited to try it because many people talk about it, but it did not live up to my expectations. The venue feels precarious, perched up on the crest on a very busy road. The food is good, but I was expecting totally outstanding. The layout is funky because it's an old church, which is probably the real draw of the place. But the bar area feels, well, haunted. Like, extremely haunted. I left with a creepy feeling and won't go back.
Visited while exploring what Columbus has to offer, This place does not disappoint! Beautiful atmosphere, excellent staff, grand scale of wine selections, and absolutely delicious food. The Pear Tarte is the best dessert I have ever had, period. It is worth a drive itself to Columbus just to try it again!
What an absolutely wonderful evening. Atmosphere, Food, and Service were all outstanding. We had the first Friday menu. Each course was more delicious than the next. The wild boar chop was especially good. And Chris paired perfect wines. Truly memorable!
We went for the wine tasting and had a fantastic time!
The music and food was outstanding! Spending it with friends made it a awesome night!
Beautiful, quaint French restaurant. Amazing service, incredible food. Great place for a special treat. Love the Bistro menu!
4 star restaurant. Fantastic service. Very good food. Great atmosphere. Excellent wine selection. Expect to pay more for the great food and service but it is well worth it. Friendly, well trained staff will make sure you enjoy your experiance. I highly recommend this for all kinds of occasions. A romantic date night, a celebration, a family get together, you will find it is perfect. One of Columbus's best.
Best restaurant... Hands down.
Filet was good, appetizer only ok....came out cold
Out of this WORLD!!! Best meal in my ENTIRE life!!!
Nothing to say that would add a facet to this place. Stuffy old refectory building is not charming - just stuffy; you can almost smell the candles. The saving grace is the quality of the dishes, the menu - heavily influenced by the French cuisine, and the service. Not Michelin star worthy perhaps, but worth four solid Google stars. Then there's that wine list, of course...
Food and service were outstanding
Great place. Atmosphere and food are worth the price especially if your with a date or loved ones
This place is good. The staff is very friendly and their prices are reasonable. The meals was superb and I will visit again.,
Best restaurant meal we have ever had and the ambiance is incredible. Pricey, but worth it. Truly a wonderful environment or dining out
Best restaurant in Columbus!
2nd visit: While attending a World Language conference, I found that I was relying too much on the hotel restaurant for meals. While it was good, I needed an infusion of French-inspired cuisine. The memory of my first visit a few years ago inspired me to leave the downtown core and venture out to Bethel Road for a night of indulgence. My colleague has a car and it was a quick 10 minute drive to the gorgeous former church.
The ambiance of this restaurant that used to be an old church is superb. Plus their food too.
The Macallan Scotch tasting event. Great deal, very educational, enjoyable, comfortable, and delicious (from the scotch to the meal). Never disappointed when I visit this restaurant.
Food was incredible and so was the wine recommended by the owner. Will be a returning customer.
The best service, and the best food. We couldn't have been happier!
This is overwhelmingly the best restaurant in town, food wise. Prices are through the roof. The big problem with this restaurant is that they have an archaic attitude about what constitutes a meal. In America today, quite a few people don't want to eat a meal that includes a desert. However, anytime The Refectory puts together a 3-course meal, it always contains a desert. Someone there is seriously sugar-addicted and totally out-of-touch with contemporary food trends. Instead of driving people away because the customers don't want to pay for that undesirable dessert, there should be an option to substitute a different appetizer or even a good side dish as the 3rd item.
The service , attention and the people are all very professional and the food is great.
Very warm environment and the service is great. Food is of high quality and price is reasonable.
Went with my brother for his French class dinner, and it was quite the experience. Low lighting was easy on the eyes, and the food was delicious. Had escargot for the first time and it was tastier than expected!
Not to use hyperbole, but this was the best meal I've ever had. Started with the mussel soup, went to the prime rib cuts and finished with creme brulee. Along the way I had a couple delicious cocktails in an atmosphere that made conversation easy and still private. Service was excellent and there was never a feeling of this place being "too good" for us, despite a top-notch dining experience across the board. Can't wait to come again.
One of the more unique dining experiences in the city. Great atmosphere for a fancy date night. Plates can be expensive, but the wine selection and multi-course meals are worth it.
Excellent food, wonderful service.. exceptional in every way. Highly recommend..
Fabulous food, fabulous service and lovely setting. Had a great time celebrating a birthday! Thank you so much!!!!
Was very delicious enjoyed the food defiantly would recommend.
We rarely visit fine dining restaurants twice, but this will always be the exception. The level of quality and preparation is outstanding. You can always expect a surprise and enjoy almost anything on the menu. The location and ambience is a great plus, as it provides the perfect setting for an intimate meal and romantic setting. Service is always at a high level, of what you would expect this caliber of restaurant. Definitely take advantage of the dining week specials to try a variety of options at a very low price.
Nice upscale restaurant with excellent wine selection. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable, building is an old church with pleasant lighting. Great place to enjoy a drink at the bar or go on a date.
This is an amazing date night spot, service is impeccable.
Food was amazing. It was so delicious. The appetizers were great, the entrees were super delicious, and dessert was just as good. Only thing was it was expensive but I think for once in my life how expensive the place was really measured up to the quality of good they served
This is a great place for a special occasion. Our server Eden made the dinner something to remember. Even surprising us with a great desert selection to cap off our event as a token from the restaurant. The atmosphere is quiet and upscale while also being rustic. You feel like you are in an old country cottege or building from France. It is great to have a slow paced dinner with friends who want to talk and enjoy company.
French food and the feeling at this spot is very good. Got there about two, it was not packed. Prices are reasonable.
I went for restaurant week and had the 3 course menu for $40. The waitress was nice, but the timing for a solo guest was off. I saw larger tables that arrived later than me getting served before me. When my entree arrived, quail the sauce/gravy had already developed a "skin" from sitting. When it came time for dessert, creme brulee I waited quite a while. The waitress stated that someone sent it back to the kitchen. She took it off the bill and gave me a 3 oz. pour of a dessert wine which was nice, but I preferred to have a flawless dining experience. I can't recommend/have no desire to return.
The best food, the most knowledgeable staff, and the best wine list. Although expensive, this restaurant is comparable to the best restaurants in major metropolitan areas like New York or Los Angeles, but I suspect that the prices are much more reasonable than the best in LA or NYC...
The cocktails are amazing. The bistro menu is wonderful. Never a problem at this divine establishment. The picture is the first course Hunter's Terrine. Amazing blend of tastes to tantalize your tastebuds.
Beautiful place. Food was excellent
The best food in Columbus. Excellent service. You can't do better.
Amazing food and service.
Upscale menu and wine list
Probably the best fine dining restaurant in Columbus. Really excellent food and good drink list. The squab appetizer and terrines are excellent. I love their cheese board. I appreciate that they have Pastis (a French spirit that is anise-flavored and really good with club soda). Definitely my go-to for either a special occasion or restaurant week meal.
Amazing food.. amazing Hospitality
Great place.. :)
One of my top places for quality French food. everyone at our table was glad to be there. i look forward to going back again. feels similar to a restaurant in philadelphia that i enjoyed visiting.
The Bistro menu was amazing. The service is always top notch.
Long over the hill, living on past glory. THE FOOD Ranging from exquisite to meh, however not quite worthy of the price point. THE SERVICE Definitely the best part of the experience, and earns the price point. THE ATMOSPHERE Sad. Some of the furnishings and fitting have seen better days. There is a cheesy ramshackle herb garden as you drive up.
french food at this place - yummy. service is always excellent even when they have a full house. i'll return family next time. prices were appropriate. i can see why they have so many great reviews.
Yum. Definitely upscale and so worth it.
Excited food liked the fillet.
Absolutely the best dining experience in Columbus. I’ve never had anyone put so much emphasis on every little detail. For what you get, it’s a great value. The food is excellent and so is the atmosphere. Will certainly return and recommend!
We did 614's Restaurant Week at The Refectory, and it was lovely. The Refectory runs their prixe fixe menu for two weeks instead of one, and they also offer discounted bottles of wine for the duration. The atmosphere is formal yet welcoming, and the service was wonderful. We had the roasted goat cheese and wild arugula and smoked blue cheese salad to start; pork and barramundi for the main course; and the salted caramel raspberry cheesecake and opera gateau for dessert. The first and third courses were out of this world! Quite possibly the best cheesecake I have ever eaten. The main courses were fine, but not as spectacular as the first and third. I also appreciated the wine shop; they carried a bottle of wine I love and haven't seen in stores in years. They only had one bottle, but they offered to purchase more for me! We will definitely be back for Saturday Samplings of wine and cheese!
One of Columbus's best.
Excellent food! Excellent service!
So classy & elegant. Food & service was delightful!
Justin, you were the best! Your Alabamians love you! XOXO thanks for a great night last night!!!
I have encountered few managers/owners who are as kind or as dedicated to extraordinary dining experiences. There is simply no other place like this in Columbus. This restaurant and its warmth remind me of the hospitable (and very memorable) experiences we have enjoyed in places like Paris, Marseilles, Montreal and Quebec City, yet it also feels like home. I am happy that the Refectory is part of Columbus-- I would not want to imagine our city without this marvelous culinary gem. Thank you for being consistently fantastic, for your excellent wine selection, for your remarkable attention to detail, and for making our city a better place overall!
I have been their twice in the last year. Once for our wedding reception and again for our one year anniversary. Both times the service, food and ambiance was impeccable. Everything I ate felt special and made just for me. I also applaud the staff and ownership for making the experience special each time. They understand that, for a lot of people, going to place like this might be a rare occurrence. I felt they went out of their way to ensure that even if this is the only time we ever go, that we will always remember the occasion.
Expensive and excellent! Between my wife and I we had the lamb and pork tenderloin meal, white mussel soup, roasted duck breast, and the pear tarte. It was all excellent, this may have been the overall best meal I've eaten in Columbus. The stand out item for me not even close was the mussel soup and it may well be the best thing that I've ever eaten. All things considered ended up being around $90/person. Service was a little slow but the quality of table side service was very high. The building is a little old and worn down, being a 'rennovated' church, but it has a lot of space. I'm 6'6" and had to duck under several parts of the ceiling, and the stairs weren't nearly wide enough, everything creeked as I walked around. I will definitely go back. That mussel soup has haunted my mind since.
Does it live up to the hype? Not so much. Is it a terrible option to dine? Not really. Though it doesn't live up to the hype, it certainly creates an impression of poshness which many would like. We were a group of four and chose to try Bison steak, which didn't taste that great and Salmon which was quiet decent. It should be noted that they have an excellent choice of wines and waiters who sound french(which some would prefer ;) )
Great food!

The food and ambience are typically great. I've been here a few times and was blown away twice, but the last time I came the food was nothing extraordinary. It's very expensive, not somewhere to eat regularly, but good for special occasions.
Excellent food and service!
Exactly the same as the best creme brulee that I have ever had. Jamal is the best at customer service. I would go there just to meet him again!
We had a wonderful night at The Refectory! James gave terrific recommendations and ensured that the evening went smoothly. Would highly recommend the bistro menu!!
AMAZING. Our waitress, Eden, was phenomenal! The food was the best I've ever eaten. By far my favorite restaurant I've ever been to. Could not more highly recommend it!
Great service and delicious food
Excellent food superior service
This is one of our favorite high end dining locations in Columbus. Kamal has created an intimate atmosphere and super service culture. Besides the excellent foody experience Kamal brings in top local musical talent to bring the experience up a notch. This is one of those "Special Event" dining locations you save for your anniversary - it will not disappoint.
The food, service, and atmosphere are all unique and exceptional. The service is absolutely the best I've experienced in the Columbus, Ohio area. If everything is not perfect, they will do whatever they can to remedy it. For example, my wife's cocktail order took slightly longer than expected, so it came with an apology and no cost.
Food was amazing, waitstaff were amazing... I have been by many times but had never been in until I went with a group from work. The next time I want to have a nice meal I will definitely be considering going back.
Extreme attention to detail. Courses arrive right on cue-not a moment too soon. Designed for dining with purpose & savoring each bite. Excellent for special occasions.
A friend of mine recommended this place to host a small celebration for a wedding anniversary. At first, I held back for the thought that their dishes and services are as expensive as how their restaurant looks like. To my surprise, their appetizing cuisines and immediate services are undeniably affordable. We were able to pull off the event without compromising the quality of the food and the staff’s labor. We are all satisfied with our experience. Thank you!
Hands down the best friend ne dining within 100 miles. Every dish is exquisite. Do your self a favor go for the first Friday menu get the wine pairing you will have happy dreams about that meal for years.
My 2nd visit to The Refectory surpassed my 1st visit experience there which I didnt think was possible. My girlfriend and I were spoiled to an incredible four course dinner with live music from Davina & The Vegabonds. I was left speechless! I would highly recommend The Refectory for any special occasion or just to simply treat oneself. Top notch ownership, service, and food!
Location is gorgeous, service was stellar, food was just ok. The monkfish was too salty and overcooked enough to be a bit rubbery. Not really worthy of the price tag.
Fabulous. Simply Fabulous.
Visited for a networking event - appetizers were fantastic. The atmosphere was cozy and relaxed.
I have been two or three times at the request of other people. I am personally not a fan of the food. I can go to nearly any restaurant and find something that is pretty good, but the Refectory was actually hard to eat both times. The price added insult to injury. I honestly wouldn't pay any amount to eat it again. I am surprised so many people like it. I don't usually dislike most foods but I had to hold my breath while eating it just to get it down. The desert was good and the after dinner drinks were good too. I have been asked to go a couple of times since my last visit and I have declined both times. I won't go even if someone else is paying. It is just too disgusting. They charge 700% more than they should. Save the money and go to a nice steakhouse like Hyde Park.

Outstanding food & service .. always very special... highly recommend if you are planning a milestone dinner
Whether I'm paying $40 per plate, or $40 for a 3-course meal during restaurant week, I expect to receive outstanding customer service, and The Refectory nails it each time. As a treat, I have taken my elementary-age son here for Mommy-Son date night during restaurant week, and they have treated us with such respect, talking to my son like a little man, and really demonstrating to him how to behave in an upscale venue. The bar crafts a special virgin cocktail with flavors to compliment our meal, and puts them in wine glasses at my son's request, further enhancing his experience in a majority adult setting. My kiddo ordered the salmon on both occassions, and while he didn't care for the sauce, they make it plain/seasoned for him instead, and he insists it's "the best salmon ever!" I had the duck last time, and tried the prime rib this time; the prime rib is fall-off-the-bone at the touch of a fork tender! The pecan pie is too sweet for my taste, but the maple bourbon ice cream that tops it is delicious! Highly recommend this place for any nice occasion for both their quality of service, as well as the gourmet dining experience.
Well I think it's a 5 star restaurant. I know french cuisine and this place was spot on. The service was fantastic, thank you for a wonderful meal.
Delicious food and excellent service. Our favorite fine dining experience in Columbus.
Very authentic French Gastronomique cuisine! totally loved it
Fabulous! I thoroughly enjoyed the Texas Antelope. The ambiance was serene and the service was perfect. Such an enjoyable evening.
Dinner at The Refectory during Wild Game week. Shared foods included Appetizers: Lobster Ballotine & Refectory escargot terrine; Dinner: Duet of Texas Antelope & Scallop Wellington, Wild Boar Rack; Dessert: white, milk and dark chocolate entremet and opera gateau. Loved, loved, love the scallop Wellington and the Wild Boar rack.
Food wasnt super forward thinking, but done very well, the wine selection was on a different level, the aesthetics of the building are something worth experiencing even if you go for lunch.
The food and staff was excellent. Quite disappointing because there's too many people out there do that don't know how to dress up when they go out to eat they dress like they're going to the neighbor's house or to a play yard. Wake up America
If you are looking for finer dining, this place is it! I visited during restaurant week so prices might have been cheaper than usual, but the food was delicious and the service was outstanding. Probably not an everyday place but you should visit at least once! Highly recommend!
Fantastic menu, service. Plan to spend the evening
Absolutely amazing! Top 5 restaurants I’ve ever eaten at. Romantic atmosphere, super fancy but laid back. Our server, Justin, gave us an unforgettable experience. Both me and my fiancé agree, it was the best service we have ever …

The best of the best. Top wine cellar in the city. Service is incomparable. The owner Kamal is the most personable and professional person one could hope to meet.
Not much to say other than this place is dedicated to customer service and food quality. Top notch, no complaints whatsoever. Had stingray here for the first time in my life, pretty wild.
Excellent service, superior food, and presentation. Come here to be impressed
We ordered from the Bistro menu. My fish was a little gamey. The service and everything else made up for it. Overall 5 stars.

Came here and was so excited for the experience of trying out the fine dining, and idk if this just how the waiters are but our waiter just seem mildly peeved to see a young couple dining. The food was really excellent, tried duck for the first time which was good. But I can’t shake just how put off by the vibe I was getting from the waiter, like just because we were young we wouldn’t tip well or didn’t belong there or something. I still tipped 20% because the wait assistant was very nice and having worked in restaurants I never tip less than that, but idk. I really expected a better experience.
Excellent food, gracious service, in a cozy setting. Particularly good value during Restaurant Week, and on the Bistro menu. One of the best wine lists in the city, whether you want to spend under $50 or over $1,000 for a bottle.
Wonderful food, great service in a romantic atmosphere! Special meal!
The best special occasion destination in Columbus! The manager has a keen eye for detail and is very welcoming and kind and the atmosphere oozes charm. Excellent service guaranteed as well!
