REVIEWS OF Piedmont Restaurant IN North Carolina

Reggie Strange

We were welcomed by our server, Kenia. She was informative and had a wonderful smile on her face that made you relaxed and happy to be there. She was also very patient when we were overwhelmed by the choices available. There was a nice selection, but they all sounded delicious. This was our first time here. Kenia was attentive and checked on us, along with other staff and managers. We were well taken care of by a great team.

Kathy McMenoman

We were there for a rehearsal dinner, nice venue, good service. Food was wonderful. Acoustics for toasts and speeches was not conducive to audience hearing what was being said. A small p.a. system would solve that.

Rick sears

Had a great meal. Ordered the steak carrots and potatoes. The sides really out shined the steak. Steak was probably an 8 but the carrots were off the scale. Amy took care of me and was so great. She really made the meal, talking about farm to table and the restaurant scene. We had a long conversation about Charleston SC which i travel to often. The Piedmont would fit in perfectly in Charleston SC. Its in an older building that has been done fantastically. The Piedmont is quaint with great atmosphere. If you are going on a date or just a business meal its the perfect destination..

Great food, good ambience, attentive staff

Kelly Galvin

the worst restaurant experience I’ve ever had. Went to a wine dinner, and everything was under-seasoned and undercooked. I took one bite out of each dish and left it alone and no one asked why, just took my plate and walked away. Incredibly underwhelming.

Paul Mott

Delicious food

Russ

Fantastic restaurant with a great atmosphere. I have had some of my best meals here. Highly recommend

Mariann Reid

The food was excellent. There was a hiccup with the bottle of wine otherwise I would give them 5 stars.

Metin Esgin

No toohpicks? Really? Glad you had some knives!

Kari Debbink

Excellent food and service. I love that the food is all local and very high quality. The menu consistently changes depending on what is available, so there is a lot of creativity and imagination that goes into creating each dish. My husband and I both had a first course, a main course, and a dessert, and it was all excellent.

Seems like food prices have increased. Reasonable food for sure, but now overpriced.

Jay Stringer

Food is good, but more pricey than it's worth.

Polly Hutchison

Just delicious, chef used interesting mix of spice and herbs and our meal was beautifully presented. Good front of house attention as well!

Jake Fisher

Yum! The short rib, boar head croquettes, beet /lamb mezzanine and redish dessert wine were amazing!!!

Fresh, delicious seasonal salad followed by amazing carbonara pasta with fresh local veggies and bacon. Our waiter Chris was attentive, efficient and delightful. One person in our group had the roasted chicken which was moist and tasty. Desserts were also wonderful. I'm not a "foodie" but enjoy and appreciate fresh, tasty, well prepared food. I'm from Maryland and this was my second visit to Piedmont and I hope to return when I visit my friends in Durham again.

Alexander Kast

John May does a great job of using simple but extremely well thought out dishes, allowing the ingredients speak for themselves.

We thought the food here was good but the service could have been better. When we could ask the server questions about menu items he could not elaborate on the dish.

We recently had the pleasure to try Piedmont while on a food tour (Taste Carolina Gourmet Tours. This restaurant has been on my local bucket list for a while and, after our visit, I wish I'd gone sooner. The food here is not just delicious, it's inspired. There are many good places to eat in Durham, but if you love cooking you can recreate a lot of what you have. Piedmont is one of the places I could not recreate what I was served - they take such care with creating their dishes and sourcing all their foods locally. Meeting the restaurants manager, Crawford Leavoy, was also a treat. He spoke with us about the restaurants mission as well as served us the wine he had chosen to pair with our dish. We were served one of their appetizers, the fried oysters along with a beautiful rosé. The oysters were lightly breaded and perfectly cooked. They were served with a duck liver parfait, buttermilk dressed frisee, and olive crumble. The olives were a treat - they take pitted olives and roast them until crunchy. Then they blend them with turbinado sugar to make this wonderful creation that's sprinkled on the plate. The little bit of saltiness, caramelized burnt flavor, and the sugar were a balance to this rich dish that I wouldn't have dreamed of creating, let alone using. The rosé was dry, bright, and tasted of nectarines. It cut both the deep flavors and the richness of the dish. It was a treat to have something so thoughtfully paired. I would highly recommend going to Piedmont for your next date night or celebration. They have done a nice job balancing cost and make their menu clear online. It does change seasonally and based on what they can get since they fully embrace the farm to table experience. Happy eating!

Great food. Fun atmosphere inside. Great ambience.

Ken Updegrave

Piedmont has always done an excellent job with the special events type meals when we have dined there. The brunch for "A Chef's Life" Season 5 Premiere was fantastic and the cocktails were quite tasty.

Ellie Cardenal

The worst restaurant we’ve been to in Durham. There wasn’t one thing I’d be willing to eat again.

Sandra Benton

We've eaten here before - several times. I live close to the location and (still) want a good reliable place to eat with friendly reliable service ... Very disappointing evening on 5/4. Slow service, food took over 2 hours to come out and one of our party of 5 ppl - got his burger after everyone else had eaten. When he did get it - it was raw in the middle - and after sending back - the bun was burned when it came back. We found out later that the chef had quit/walked out right before we got there. Wish they'd just told us that their service that evening was 'compromised' instead of seating us. And to add insult to injury (literally) - after posting a review on their FB page - I got a very snarky gif response (and was then blocked by) the manager....(since then I've deleted the exchange - not sure why it upset me so much... bleh...I hate negativity!) So now - instead of only losing mine (and others) business for one night - they've lost a fair amount of future business including none of us recommending the restaurant again (used to be one I was confident to recommend). So disappointing - but as my daughter said - she'd wanted to warn the folks that had come in after us and she'd want to be warned before ever getting there - so her hard earn $$ wasn't wasted on a sub-par evening of dining out ... and the only way to really do that is to post a review. FYI - for me - I'd have still let it go - but for the manager's response....

Julianna DeBacco

Food was amazing! Fair price for both food and drinks. Friendly service too.

C.Andres Mendoza

Oh it’s really good.

Jason Brown

Food was very salty.

Derek Brown

Fantastic spot for elevated southern food!

Patrick Charbonneau

Très bon resto à Durham avec une carte locale et inspirée. Endroit plutôt calme dans un joli décor. La qualité de la bouffe semble fluctuer avec le chef, mais en vaut le prix ces jours-ci.

C. Northern

I loved everything. It's definitely a place to frequent.

Melanie Allen

Piedmont is a great place to go for mid to upscale dining that uses local ingredients. It has a fantastic wine list and great seasonal daily/weekly featured dishes. I love the scallops, all of their salads, and the cheese plate. They had a sticky cake during restaurant week a few years ago that I'm still dreaming about, though it doesn't seem to be in the regular dessert rotation.

Duke Nuken

Noce location and good food

ed reid

Food is ok, limited menu. Nice atmosphere.

Jeremy Tarr

Quality meal. Recommend pairing with drinks at The Durham Hotel prior.

Geoffrey Bomarito

Was here for a wedding. Atmosphere was almost as good as the food. Every dish I had was beautifully prepared and presented, and the flavors were spot on! If you get a chance, try the trout mousse or the fried catfish and you won't be disappointed.

Hafeez D

Wonderful experience. Excellent scallops and shishito peppers.

Nik Kei

Well prepared meals with great textures and flavors. First time I ever ate a zucchini flower. Staff is very professional. Great Place to enjoy a nice relaxing evening. Nice wine selection.

Daniel Huffman

First time visit was sensational. The duck breast was fun and flavorful with many compliments from the fresh blueberries to the carrots and beats. Dessert was fantastic. I enjoyed the fried cherry pie and salted camel ice cream. I highly recommend trying anything from the seasonal menu.

Moneka Bullock

Amazing place! The was my first time dining here and let me just say I loved everything. The food was delicious and the ambience was really cozy and romantic. The staff were so kind and helpful! We loved everything! For our appetizer my date and I enjoyed the deviled eggs and hush puppies, which were wonderful. You couldn’t go wrong with anything on the menu, however I highly recommended the Duck breast and the Market fish! The manager and the chef both came to the table and thanked us for coming which made us feel so welcomed. Definitely going back!

Kaitlin Strauss

Delicious!

Not that great of food for the prices - Durham has much better options

Bence Rácz

I highly recommend this place. Staff is amazingly friendly, and the food is heavenly. They also do their best to make your visit pleasant. I will return to try all the other local food.

gerald griffin

I had a business dinner there and had fantastic service. The menu was good, but for me a bit to eclectic. I had a side salad and their appetizer crab cake.

Michael Mathews

Open style atmosphere, wonderful service, outstanding food! Pricey, but just wait till you taste.... Wow! I ate the scallop plate. Highly recommended!

Mr/Mrs Vungtautwi

A well rounded menu. High quality food and drink.

I went there for the first time. Honestly, I guess I never knew it was there. We absolutely loved it! We were looking to try a new restaurant on Friday. I dreaded having to wait forever for a table. The good news is, we did not have to wait at all. They sat us immediately, but I cannot understand why they were so empty. We decided to do the Pre Fixe menu; she did the wine pairing, I did not. I do not normally do the pre fixe, but, this was priced nicely, and we were feeling adventurous. The theme was heirloom peppers, so each dish featured a pepper. This was a 4 course ordeal. The food was fantastic, service was even better. Our waiter was very nice, and super informative. I asked a question to which he did know the answer, so he went and asked the chef and returned with an answer for me. The food was great! I mean top notch. We both were very impressed. I loved the entrée the most, she really liked course #2. All of them were good. I did not try the wine pairings, but she was quite taken with the selections. The only set back was the final course, which generally would be a dessert. I suppose it is difficult to create a pepper based dessert, so the chef prepared a cheese with pepper jelly. It was very good, but left me wanting something sweet. I told the waiter that perhaps they should have the cheese dish first, and just tell people there is no dessert course with this pre fixe. He passed my suggestion on to the Chef who, evidently, agreed and changed the order of the courses. Overall, we had a great experience. There was a mistake on the bill, and the waiter promptly apologized and fixed it. We will be back, perhaps next month, when they change the pre fixe menu. It really was a great treat.

Rose Labriola

Great place to eat. Fresh food that's excellent

Chercez Mangum

The food was unique and tasty, but the treatment we received from the chef made the experience unsavory and distasteful. The hostesses were disorganized, which I can give forgiveness to as we all are not always at the top of our game. However, the response and attitude from the chef really made the experience unpalatable. We were there for a special event. The hostess had us down for the incorrect amount of people; therefore, it took us longer than usual to be seated. The hostess didn’t seem to know what to do or where to seat us; although there was an open table with enough seats for our party and no other diners were waiting to be sat. The chef blamed us for the mistake and begrudgingly sat us at a table. Not sure why he was helping the hostesses seat people to begin with. Perplexed by his nasty attitude, we asked what was the problem, and he snapped at us that we told them the incorrect amount of people in our party. Instead of taking a minor error (that wasn’t our fault) and just adjusting quickly since a table was available, he took his frustrations and irritations out on us. The waitress we had was excellent. However, due to experience we had with the chef, we will not be back to this restaurant. We would rather spend our money somewhere that has leadership that treats their customers with sincerity and integrity.

I have watch the chefs bring ingredients straight from the farmers market in Durham Central Park on Saturdays. On my list of celebration spots. Good drinks and food options, dishes well over $20/plate.

Sommelier Adam Greene has put together one of the regions best wine lists. If you appreciate good food and great wine you must try this restaurant.

Suze Bear

Untrained staff. Mediocre food. At 2:00 pm on a Saturday, we made a 7:00 pm reservation for that evening through Open Table. That there was a 7:00 pm reservation still available for 4 people should have been our first clue, but Piedmont has been around for a while and is a Durham institution, or so we thought. When we arrived, we were shown to a table in the middle of the restaurant floor. The restaurant is quite noisy, and there were several available tables against the wall; so, we asked if we could sit at one of those instead. The hostess said that they were reserved and that we couldn't switch tables. We asked why, and she mumbled uncomfortably and got the manager. The manager came over and said they were fully booked for the evening, and that they couldn't give up a nice 4-top to people who had just reserved through Open Table. . . I mean, well, that's not what he said exactly. He just repeated that because the restaurant was fully booked, they couldn't change tables. Huh? OK, whatever. Let's just sit and have a nice meal. But, wait, there's more, lots more. What is the character limit on these things? As we waited for our friends, somebody came over from the bar and filled our glasses with water and tried to take away the two other place settings. We stopped him and asked if we could we have a cocktail menu, because, strangely enough, we might want to order a cocktail. Our friends arrived, and the manager came out with a plate of bread and butter. It's the least he could do for people who had just made a reservation that afternoon on Open Table, those peasants. A waitress came over and my husband and I ordered off the list of signature cocktails. Oh, we are out of Luxardo. What? That's in one of your signature cocktails. Yeah, sorry. So, we didn't see that waitress again. Just a bartender. Do you guys need anything? Uh, yeah, can we order an appetizer? We'd like the charcuterie plate. Sure. A while later, the drinks arrive, delivered by a third person. We wave our bartender friend down. Um, can we order our entrees? Sure. I'll have the fisherman's stew? OK, well, we are out of clams and mussels, so it'll just be sausage and fish pieces and shrimp and carrots that look they were chopped by your 13 year old son. Um, that's not really fisherman's stew then, is it? Also, we'd like some wine with dinner, but haven't quite decided yet. Just letting you know so that you'll come back. The food arrives. We flag the bartender down. My husband orders a glass of wine. I order another cocktail. We begin to eat. 5 minutes later, the glass of wine arrives. Somebody comes by the table -- is everything OK? Um, yes, but I'm still waiting on my cocktail. OK, I'll check. We keep eating. 5 minutes later, the bartender comes by. How is everything? It's fine, but I'm waiting on my cocktail. OK, let me check. Eating. . . Five minutes later, the manager comes by -- how IS everything? Um, still waiting for my cocktail. I'll check on that! A minute later: sound of cocktail shaker.. . . A couple of minutes later: cocktail! Me: OK, that's my dessert! The food was OK. The fish stew would have been better with clams and mussels (yes, I ordered it anyway). My husband's rib-eye steak was 1/3 fat. The charcuterie plate was not one of the better ones we've had in Durham. How can you have a charcuterie plate without spicy mustard? Spicy ketchup, instead. The bread and butter with tiny popcorn (actually, popped sorghum) was decent. Oh, and the hostess' and manager's claim that the restaurant was fully booked? If fully booked means, less than 2/3 full, then, yes, it was fully-booked when we left.

Better have a reservation. They will turn you away

Good food, locally sourced. Good service. Can be pricey.

My husband and I recently had dinner at The Counting House - our server Garrett was fantastic and I don't think I've ever had better service. The food itself was excellent - the Carolina Gold grits and scallops, especially. We so enjoyed everything, everyone was so friendly and accomodating. Our happy place!

I chose Piedmont as a dinner venue for a group of business associates visiting the area for the first time from outside the US, given the restaurant's local farm-to-table focus. Dinner was on a calm Monday night, and the earlier arrivals conversed in the pleasant bar area over wine and cocktails. Our group was seated in the upstairs mezzanine area, where the noise level was fine for conversation (perhaps less ideal on a busy night?). The Coon Rock Farm's charcuterie plate was delicious. Beet-stained pimento cheese deviled eggs and tart/sweet house pickled peppers paired with two Chapel Hill Creamery cheese selections. The texture of the liver pate and the filling of the hamhock rillette seemed too similar to have appeared together on the same board, but each was very tasty and well executed in its own right. A great starter, and sufficient for two. The scallops were also popular with our group, but some felt a third scallop would have been nice - especially as they glanced across the table at us with our charcuterie. The Coon Rock Farm's pork chop was served with a romesco sauce and beautifully cooked field peas that I found surprisingly enjoyable. The generous chop was well seasoned but slightly overcooked for my liking, though I noted several others at the table had rarer. All enjoyed the dish, though I found it the weakest of my three. The short ribs also drew high praise from others. The butternut squash fritters for dessert were excellent, with an interesting texture and surprisingly light flavor that was a mercifully restrained departure from the raging "pumpkin spice everything" movement that arrives each Fall. Spiced bites of panna cotta and ice cream rounded out the plate, and I found myself wanting an entire handful of the candied carrot curls (or were they more butternut squash?) served alongside as garnish. Chewy, sugar-crunchy - I'd buy those by the bag all on their own. Overall, the dinner guests gave high marks and appreciated the focus on local and seasonal ingredients as well as the extensive wine selection. Our server was competent and attentive, and paced the meal well for the group. Though I wish I'd seen a touch more latitude in the charcuterie selection and my pork chop had seen a tad less time on the heat, I look forward to returning to Piedmont to see how the fare changes with the seasons.

Delicious food, great beverage selection and wonderful staff. They were very attentive to my food intolerances and I would feel very comfortable eating there again.

Restaurant Week 2017. The Best advice I can offer: Do Not order the short rib entreé featured on the Restaurant Week menu. This was pretty-much an insult. Others in my party ordered from the daily menu and both meals were superb!

John Colpitts

Phenomenal food, great atmosphere, and outstanding service.

Michael Rae

The people were amazing. We went midweek and the crowd was small. The hostess did a good job of making sure that the group was taken care of. The day we visited was the first day of a new menu. I think this is the reason for my only complaint, that the service was pretty slow. We spent about 2.5 hours there, but a lot of that time was just spent in conversation. I would recommend not coming by if you are in a hurry to get somewhere, but if you have time, why not? While we were there, the owners were there for their own supper. This was nice since it is locally owned. Parking was a bit confusing... we just parked on the side of the street just around the corner. It is 2 hour parking before 6, so evening are fine, and free!

BT N

I took a chance and came here for the first time with friends for my birthday. Everything felt overpriced (5 hushpuppies for $10) and all of our dishes were unsatisfactory on some level. The risotto was definitely undercooked and the leek flavor did not go well with it. One person asked if the risotto could be done without mushrooms, if not then they would have the burger. The risotto came out with mushrooms, making us wonder if the server forgot, was served the wrong plate, or the server was trying to make the more expensive sale. All in all, I would not come back here and am embarrassed that my birthday dinner was not enjoyed by anyone in my party.

trashquatch

Nice atmosphere. There is a rotating menu of select choices, I had the flounder and it was really good.

Food and atmosphere was great. Had the calamari, pretzle bites and ribs for appetizers. All were good. Had duck breast, pork chops, short ribs and pork hash entrees. Duck breast was perfect. Shared sides of Brussel sprouts were

Our first visit tonight, and I'm sad to say we were really disappointed. We had high expectations, but unfortunately I now have a stomachache. The place was freezing, and the service was slow. We ordered burrata ravioli, which was a huge portion size, but swimming in a butter cream sauce. It was so heavy and after thee bites, we'd both had enough. We called it butter soup. We also ordered a hamburger, which unfortunately had little flavor, except for the gross cheese they put on it. We wound up scraping the cheese off. Best thing in the entire meal was the yellow tomato on the burger. The sweet potato fries were limp and soft, and they piled a ton on the plate. We also had the shishito peppers, which were decent, but again, was a huge platter of them, way too much to finish. Finally, the hushpuppies, which we ordered as an appetizer, and they were okay, but after the butter soup, we wished we hadn't eaten them with the butter that came with them. Sorry, wish we'd had a better experience. We won't be back.

Nan Merrick

We recently went to a special event, a food and wine dinner to promote Frances Mayes' new cookbook, "See you in the Piazza." The food was wonderful, beautifully paired with wines, and the service amazing! The restaurant was completely full, yet their were no delays, cold food etc. Bravo!!!

Kerry Graham

We were welcomed by our server, Kenia. She was informative and had a wonderful smile on her face that made you relaxed and happy to be there. She was also very patient when we were overwhelmed by the choices available. There was a nice selection, but they all sounded delicious. This was our first time here.

Peter Patterson

Everything we ordered was excellent - so good we decided to make it our special occasion restaurant. We ordered the olives as an appetizer as we waited for the rest of our party to arrive and when our server wrapped up the rest of our meal to go he added some extra olives. The service was excellent too. We had appetizers/salads/entrees but no dessert.

Alexandra Sanders

Great food and great service

Rebekkah Huss

Kristen Dewey

Very good food, though I felt it was a little over-priced for the portion size. Good service. The cheese platter appetizer was especially good. Love that they feature local ingredients.

Peter Strongoli

A group of middle school teachers went to the Piedmont last night to celebrate a birthday and it was very disappointing. First, the food was satisfactory, portion were small and prices were not. The service was terrible on two counts, one, a 3 to 3 1/2 hour dinner was way too long, very slow service and lastly the most annoying was that although we all clearly requested individual checks, by couples, at the end of the meal we were presented with a single check for 12 people. How does that work, is it because groups of over 10 have to pay a 18% gratuity? So at the end of a marginal meal, here a 12 people trying to figure out who ate or drank what, who owed what and who had cash because they would only allow 4 credit cards to processed against the bill, ridiculous... There are too many good restaurants in downtown Durham that pride themselves a great customer service. Lesson learned, we shall not return.

David Motsinger

Crawford, John and the rest of the staff make Piedmont an experience. Great food, great wine and great service!!!

Andrew Babic

Just average food

Amanda Deal

Let me say that the flavors were excellent! I had the scallops and mushroom risotto, everyone else had the pork chops. Both were very high quality and we were satisfied. Smallish portions, but excellent food. However, there were only 3 tables with patrons on a Friday night. I have a couple of guesses as to why. The food is expensive, as it should be—again, very good food. After our order was taken, we expected bread or some other pre-meal something to be placed on the table. It wasn’t, and the appetizer plates that were at the table when we were seated were removed. I asked if there would be pre-meal bread, and the server asked if we would like to order some. For 7 bucks. We declined, and just waited for our food. Now, for 4 people, it was $240 after we added 20% gratuity. 2 of us had 2 glasses of wine, one had 2 beers, one had one beer. We ordered NO bread, appetizers, or desserts. Just mains. The atmosphere was just like any other downtown Durham restaurant, nothing special by any means, nice enough. There were very few people there. Our waiter was also the bartender. All of that is perfectly fine, but not $60 per person fine. None of us left raving about anything in particular or making plans to go back. Y’all might be able to get a full house (or a less empty house) on a Friday evening without changing prices if you offer something before the meal—maybe a bowl of pork cracklings to keep with the local theme? Or maybe a makeover of the dining area so it’s not so forgettable? Bartender and hosts and server separate? Otherwise, you’re shooting yourselves in the foot and completely pricing yourselves out of the Durham market.

Jonathan Mattingly

Simple good food. The recent price rise is unfortunate and al most made me drop one star.

Matt Reese

I'm shocked that this place has such a mid level rating, it's one of my favorite places in town! The food is always what's fresh and local, and varies a lot from day to day, but everything we've had has been amazing. A place like Watts grocery may be a bit more consistent, but we come here time and time again because we always get something unique and new. Not to mention their cocktails - simply amazing.

gregory Edwards

Bland food

CLEMENTINE ADEYEMI

Really good food, presentation and service

Sara Cooper

This place never disappoints. Food and staff are always amazing.

Tonika Louck

the food is delicious and very friendly staff

Jen McCraw

This is by far the best restaurant in Durham for a nice meal. It is worth every penny!

Andrew Oliver

The food there is EXCELLENT. It is all local food. I have NEVER had a bad meal there. The service is great and the bartender is skilled. I'm very very pleased! The only warning: this is not a place to go on a budget, but I don't think it looks like one or is even advertised as one.

Michael Byers

I like this place, even though the food can be a little "uneven." You have to remember, they are using locally sourced ingredients, and the consistency can be a little hit-or-miss. If the ingredients are not top-notch, there's not much a cook can do about that. But don't get me wrong. This less-than-stellar food is rare. The food is usually outstanding, and I like the ambience.

Millie Kwan

Always enjoy coming to this restaurant. A great example of farm to table cooking and staying local. We had excellent NC oysters on the half shell, summer salad was very nice as was the pork chop special with peach chutney, green beans and roastedsweet and regular potatoes. The craft cocktails here are also superb and they even have some local liquor such as Conniption. Service was good although a little slow as it seems that the was only one person taking orders on the floor. Parking should be ok across the road if the is no other event at Durham Central Park.

Ivan Vrabie

Not your usual restaurant, unique dishes, nice atmosphere

Holly Pups

The drinks were incredible. The main dish was good, however the server didnt inform us of the change of side dish (3 of us ordered the herbed chicken/brussel sprouts/potatoes au gratin) specifically because of the sprouts. When we received our dishes, we were given really sad looking and tasting green beans. We expressed our disappointment immediately the waiter and he just said he forgot to tell us they weren't doing Brussels that day. There was no apology or offer to correct. I believe that was more on the waiter than the restaurant, but it was unfortunate because the green beans were quite a damper on an otherwise good meal.

Johannes Himmelreich

Excellent house wines and the most innovative cooking and beautiful plating in the area.

Angus Logan

Always interesting dishes with local ingredients, and great seasonal cocktails. Service has always been attentive but unintrusive. Highly recommended.

Pam Long

We loved this place. Got to share different dishes with our friends. Great waitress, Katherine.

CHRIS VINSON

The restaurant is kind of plain. No real devote. The staff was friendly but not sure they knew the menu very well.

G Smith

Not much of a farm to table unless they mill their own flour. They put everything on a biscuit, its mostly biscuit, and did I say they like biscuits. Their idea is good the execuition is not. My eggs were suppose to have asparagus, a shaving so small I could hardly see it. Hardly any hollandaise sauce mostly biscuit. The waiter needed a refresher course in what his job is. We were there for over 2 hours waiting for him to bring us our food, he asked us at one point what we were waiting for and we had to tell him our next course. This isnt a place I'll be going back to.

Triangle Home Detailing

My wife and I went for a Saturday night date and both loved it. The beef carpaccio had amazing flavor, as did the heirloom tomato salad. I had the wreck fish while my wife had the pastured chicken. Both cooked beautifully with tons of flavor. I would highly recommend this to anyone that wants an interesting take on southern cuisine.

Alexi Alexi

Amazing, the best I have had in the triangle

First time to Piedmont this weekend and it was quite enjoyable. Attractive modern decor with beautiful reused wood hung in long strips as art on the walls. Gorgeous natural feel. Easy to get a last minute reservation (and on a Third friday, too!) - the staff was super helpful on the phone. Service was very attentive (although not super 'warm' - not a lot of explanations or excess chitchat), and the food was excellent. I totally disagree with previous reviewers about the portion sizes. For $6 I had a bowl of their pumpkin soup with creme fraiche and white truffle oil and it was a huge portion! I could have had that alone for dinner. But I followed it up with the beet, goat cheese, granny smith apple, and pickled daikon salad - a novel and beautiful melding of flavors both sweet and savory, though I wish the beet to everything else ratio had been a little lower (fewer beets). My boyfriend had the smoked carolina trout dip with horseradish and crostini and also really enjoyed that. I thought the meal was very reasonably priced for the quality of the food. We will definitely go back.

My wife and I had a wonderful experience at Piedmont Restaurant! First, my wife is about to have surgery and will not be in the mood for a Valentine’s dinner. So, this was the night to celebrate!!! I had made arrangements with Christopher, a manager, to have flowers at the table. This was completed very well! After the pleasant host, Nate, seated us at our table, she saw the flowers. My wife was very surprised. We took advantage of the three course meal choices. I had the Calamari, Mushroom Ravioli, and Chocolate Mousse. I am always nervous when I order Calamari. It is a 50/50 chance to be decent or chewy. Not only was the Calamari decent, it was GREAT! It was breaded and cook just right. The Mushroom Ravioli absolutely delicious. I was concerned that only a small portion would come to the table. I’m a big guy, and I like my food. When the plate arrived, I was pleasantly surprised. There were 5-6 large raviolis. Each bite was as perfect as the last. Definitely a favorite. The chocolate mousse was rich and smooth. It was a perfect end to this wonderful meal. My wife ordered the Winter Salad, Soy Ginger Short Rib, and the Brown Cinnamon and Apple Cake. The winter salad was... salad, so I did not try (sorry). The presentation was beautiful. My wife enjoyed it tremendously. The Soy Ginger Short Rib was AWESOME!!! I know that most people abuse this word every day, but this short rib dish blew it out of the water!!!! IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST DISHES I HAVE EVER HAD!!! It made me want to order an extra serving just for me!! It was the best!!! Prime rib meets the most tender brisket that you could imagine!!! BRAVO!!! Her dessert, the Brown Cinnamon and Apple Cake was wonderful. The flavors all came together perfectly. Overall, we had a blast! The staff was attentive and worked very well together. The drinks were perfect, the food was remarkable and delicious, and the service was spot on! Thank you for a great time and a true dining experience!!!

Piedmont had the qualities, unusual in their concurrence, of being interesting yet distasteful. The vegetables looked tired, the trout could not be eaten. I could only compliment some of the plating, though it looked less beautiful than strange.

Alyson Hoffman

Good food and two vegetarian options, which is more than most, but didn't live up to the expectations for a main course. The cocktails and appetizers were worth coming back for though.

Great service and food.

Loved it. Great service and interesting food. Definitely reminds me of being back in DC.

We had a nice meal here for Valentine's day. The menu is a little bit limited at times, but the food quality is fantastic and the atmosphere is great. You can walk to the rest of the places in downtown within a couple of minutes. There is both a downstairs and upstairs dining room to suit the atmosphere that you like. There is also back set of steps that leads straight to the bathroom, which is nice if the place is busy.

I would have given 4 stars if it wasn’t for the apparent lapse in communication : the waitress offered a starter version of the risotto prices as a main baht 1300. The understanding I had was, I would be served a smaller version “starter” were her words and so I also opted for the salt baked fish. as well. However I was shocked to learn I would be paying the risotto at the main price. There’s no excuse for fudging rehearsed interactions at a fine dining rssdaieant: ‘to start with..’ and “a starter”, I was told a starter are two different meanings. The price comparatively was not a starter,

Creative cuisine, but very small portions. Menu neglected to say that the catfish was fried, that was disappointing. And it was a bit dry and lacking in flavor, too.

The Sazerac was one of the best I've had. The service was excellent, the appetizers came out almost immediately, and the dinners were good. Thoughtfully crafted dishes that are pleasant looking, and are delicious to match. Will bring others with me the next time I go. It is also a really cool atmosphere, and old warehouse turned modern but still with a rustic flare.

Michelle Pauly

Went as a family of meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans and each one of us had a delicious meal.

Excellent food, service and a nice atmosphere! You really couldn't ask for a better experience!

I had the swordfish and it was excellent! Some very fun and unique flavors on all of the dishes. Everything was very fresh and tasted great. A fun, casual atmosphere and friendly staff as well.

I hadn't eaten here before today. I was greeted with a smile and warm welcome from their host, she engaged in conversation as she sat us. Once seated we hardly had to wait at all for our server even though it was slightly busy due to it being mothers day. Nathan was my server and he was so delightful. He was very attentive and prompt. Had a kind tone and smile. Also very knowledgeable about the menu. Brad, the bartender expedited our drinks quickly and they were delicious.. as we waited for the meal all of the other staff stayed busy keeping the place clean and tidy. Kenia, a server that was taking care of a table next to us was just as pleasant and attentive as Nathan. Even checked on us as she walked by. Meggan, one of the managers, was very accommodating throughout our entire experience and very helpful to all the staff. Our food was delivered in a reasonable amount of time and the presentation of the plates was beautifully done. The quality of our Tiramisu French toast and Pork hash were amazing! Nathan came back shortly after a second bite to be sure we were satisfied as well as another manager, Christopher . He also was very energetic and delightful. Overall I had a great experience, will definitely return. I highly recommend Piedmont to anyone in the area!!

For our party of eight, we probably had 7 different entries. All well prepared and delicious. Extensive wine and beverage selection. Some local craft beers. Friendly, knowledgeable servers that did a great job, 18% gratuity added for our large group.

Laura Rooklin

Modern southern fare that was tasty. We tried & shared more of the small plates than main dishes and enjoyed the bites of all of them, especially the crostini & salad. Delicious birthday cake for dessert

This is the easiest 5 stars I have ever rated anything, and I am stingy on my ratings. I have only been there once, but everything was perfect. One of the best meals of my life. I had the rabbit. Yes, you're paying $30 for the main course on average, but it's a treat. You just need to have a little trust in the chef. The menu changes almost daily it sounds like, so I guess experiences can vary. Aside from the food, I enjoyed the atmosphere and drink selection. The waiter was perfectly attentive and chummy.

We went here for a bite with some friends who recommended it. The place was well-appointed and modern, a nice atmosphere. Our service staff was outstanding - several people came over throughout the evening to offer help and ask how things were. Although actually there was a bit of a long wait to get our order in, but after that things were fine service-wise. The food was also very good. I had the sausage, which I understand is hand-made there at the restaurant with all local ingredients. My wife and our two friends got some potato pancakes. The food quality was outstanding, but as other reviewers have stated they are the smallest portions you will ever see. My sausage portion was ok, but it only came with like 4 thin carrot and potato slices... for $19. The potatoes pancakes were equally tiny, and my wife, who eats like a bird anyway, was still hungry at the end of the meal. But it was all very delicious.

“Outstanding Dinner” Our dinner at Nanas was absolutely delicious . Another thing we enjoyed was the fact we could dress casual since my quest was visiting and we did not have to worry about the dress code.

Tyler McCraw

I like to save Piedmont for very special occasions. The wait staff are some of the most respectful and caring staff I've come across. You can tell that they take their job seriously. The food was fantastic. Both my wife and I tried probably the more adventurous items on the menu at the time and we were amazed by how well the food was crafted. I will be coming back here every time I have something major to celebrate. And I'm hoping that happens more often :)

Went on a Friday night and it wasn't too busy. Overall it was fine, but for what they charge, I expected better. The cocktail my partner ordered was too tart to be enjoyable. The portions seem to vary widely depending on what you order. I had considered the scallops but went with the pork chop after seeing how small my neighbor's plate was. Some notes to the manager - some of your tables are quite wobbly. Drinks shouldn't spill as the table shifts from side to side. Also the sharp knife provided to me couldn't cut through the pork so I'd suggest some better cutlery.

Becky Miller

The food is good and so is the service

Beverly Christian

Literally the worst service I've ever had in a restaurant. Not sure what was going on but there was clearly a problem. I should have gone with my gut and left at the start when it took forever for our waitress to even ask for our drink order and then again took forever for our drinks to come. While we waited for our food for and hour and a half the server didn't offer more drinks or an explanation as to why the long wait. When our food finally came out, one person in our group still had to wait. Restaurant 101 tells you that you serve everyone at the table their food at the same time. When his burger finally came out it wasn't cooked in the middle so he had to send it back. When it came back a second time the bun was burnt so the whole thing tasted terrible. An explanation and a discount on everyone's bill would have been greatly appreciated. They did give us free bread... They usually charge $5

Delicious food available. However , very very small place.

The Piedmont has been around for ages and I have never had a bad night there. There are so many trendy restaurants in the downtown Durham area to try. But we keep coming back over and over again. We really appreciate the focus on local ingredients, local farms. It means when we bring friends and family from out of town, they get to experience something truly unique. I was there with three other people last night. And everyone at our table ordered a different first course and different main course. This speaks well of the menu. It's not a huge menu, but it changes with the seasons and every dish is an exploration. We did a lot of plate sharing last night. Everyone got to try everyone else's dish. I had the pork chop which was huge, well seasoned, and had just the right crispy on the outside and tenderness on the inside. It came with grits, a peach relish and candied pecans and it was amazing. Not fussy, jut a great combination of flavors. For my first course I had the peach salad which had cucumber, blue cheese and just a bit of onion. Our waiter was super helpful. We were there for the Mike Birbiglia show and our waiter asked us if we were going to the show so she could make sure we got out of there in time to walk up to the Carolina Theater. So yeah, go try those trendy places, but trust me, you'll be coming back to the Piedmont over and over again like a trusted friend.

I dined at Piedmont with a couple of friends after one of them raved about a chicken and green bean dish she once ate there. They have seasonal menus, so we knew there was a high chance they would not be serving that dish during our visit. However, we figured the food would still be as tasty as our friend described. Overall, I found the food to be quite flavorful and it felt good to eat at a restaurant that sourced its menu options from local farmers. I ordered a pasta dish that was a little cold when served, but was otherwise tasty. The wait to be served was a bit long, so I did not want to send the dish back. One of my two friends ordered the same dish I did and said her was cold as well. We enjoyed the experience, but there was nothing about the restaurant that has motivated us to return. I recommend booking a reservation, as it can be a challenge to be seated at this restaurant, especially during Spring and Summer. I say it's a worth a try at least once.

Vanessa Smith Bilbruck

Started out good with both dish ideas and execution but then went downhill. Our server forgot we hadn’t finished our prix fixe meal and asked us why we were still there (he hadn’t served dessert yet). Sad because I was pretty excited to eat here after looking through the chef’s cookbook.

Katherine Richardson

This place certainly has a good burger and a nice craft beer selection. The atmosphere is lively. It's a great place to go with friends on a weekend night.

Ritchie Sparks

Inventive takes on local ingredients.

Ian Walter

Went with my wife there for our wedding anniversary, server was awkward and nervous. Took us forever to get our appetizers (bread/salad) the ‘butter’ for the bread didn’t have much flavor. Wife ordered scallops, portion size seemed small for what they charged us. Probably won’t go back, even though the flavors were good.

Greg Pate

From the time we stepped through the door until we left, the service was wonderful and each dish-- from the Lettuces, followed by the entrees, followed by dessert-- were all delicious. The atmosphere was nice too (especially since I think rustic wood makes most rooms better). Very well done, Piedmont crew. We'll be back for sure.

Eric Forehand

We just weren't impressed. My wife's entree was comped it turned out so badly. Apps and dessert were good, and our return visit went ok. They need to raise their game, there are just too many better places in Durham

Carrie Miller

Good service and delicious food. I like that they use seasonal ingredients.

Bob Baker

I'm in town performing a couple of piano benefit concerts for Hurricane Florence and went to an awesome restaurant with great food and great service. My waiter Osvaldo was excellent. He made a great wine pairing of a Portugese red with the duck breast and roasted vegetables in a bluberry sauce. Delicious and not as sweet as cherries. The soup was a white bean and bacon perfect for a first dish. The General Mgr. came over to see how the meal was and my waiter checked on me several times. I will be back.

ninalita84

Great place for Sunday Brunch. I've enjoyed sitting at the bar as well as at a table. The menu changes pretty frequently, but two of my favorite dishes have been the duck confit eggs Benedict and the rice cake with smoked trout. Service staff has always been good when I've been there.

Jack Wagstaff

Divine southern flavors in a cozy farm to table atmosphere. The server was very personable and attentive, though the appetizers took too long to come out given the occupancy. The scallops dish was appropriately priced and filling. The chicken entree, however, was $2 more ($22) and was a leg over 3/4 cup of vegetables, making the dish far overpriced. The four huspuppies for $10 were good, but $2 a hushpuppy is a lot. My party concluded that while we'd like to return for the flavors, we won't because of the portions/price.

Carol Henderson

Chef Ben Adams has made this my favorite local restaurant again. I love the beet and apple salad combo, plus his browned butter dishes and did I mention the trout appetizer? The staff is attentive and friendly. I'm looking forward to trying their brunch this summer.

Ezra Farber

Incredible! I had the risotto with beets and that melt-in-your-mouth crispy kale. It was UNBELIEVABLE. Salads were fantastic too. My only complaint - I ordered some cheeses and they served them cold. Cold cheese = no flavor. Otherwise fantastic. Beautiful space, peaceful, great parking right across the street!

Kandice Bradham

Everything is fresh and delicious!!!

Tyler Christian

Service was terrible, food took 1.5 hours to come out and was undercooked and unedible. Waste of money.

Thom Dunn

Best steak I've had in a while. Everything was great!

Becky Harper

Four of us went last night and were really disappointed! The service was friendly, but very, very slow to actually deliver even beverages. Food orders took almost 30 minutes! I ordered the "special" scallops for $20+....and got only TWO small scallops and a miserly side of sauteed greens! I left hungry! My fiance had the snapper which was good but also a very small portion. The menu is very limited, which we expect at a farm-to-table restaurant, but it was hard to find appealing choices. Location is nice w/ public parking across the street, and the environment is nice enough. But I'm amazed they stay in business with so many other excellent choices in Durham.

William Tsun

First time to Piedmont. Casual atmosphere and fitting decor. The waitress explained how they make everything from scratch including the pasta, sausage and try to use as much of the meats as possible. We had the Housemade Charcuterie, Beef Sugo Spaghetti, and NC Vermillion Snapper Brodetto. The flavors blended well and the fresh spaghetti was a nice touch. Especially good was the broth with the snapper. Could have had a full loaf of the buttered garlic toast with the broth alone.

Tracy Bass

Food lacked any kind of taste(spice). Portions were small. Service was great.

Rebecca Delk

The food here is amazing! I had one of the best steaks I've ever eaten the last time I went here. I have only been to Piedmont for events that I did not pay for so I'm not sure exactly how expensive the food is. There are also quite a few interesting drink options.
