Great taste, nice services
Awfulawfulawful staff. He hates his job. Food was edible. Wine was the best part of the evening. This place was great a few years ago.
Great food, great service. Lovely décor
An amazing little french experience in the heart of the city and hell's kitchen. It feels like you have just stepped in a french restaurant in France. the staff the food and the experience is authentic. The food is very tasty and very french. It is also very reasonable and down to earth. a great place for a nice family evening with the kids.
Had escargot, coq au vin, and chocolate mousse for $27. Friendly service including the owner, and the food was delicious.
This place was great. The adults enjoyed the wine and sangria. The kids thought the Croque Madame and the Mac and cheese were the best ever. Highly recommended.
My favorite franch restaurant in New York
The food was delicious, and the service was perfect. We will be back the next time we’re in NYC.
Trout Almondine was delicious. Excellent coffee, sangria. Nice, relaxed, uplifting environment.
Wonderful atmosphere to relax and enjoy some delicious French cuisine. Celebrated a milestone there and staff was more than attentive and understanding. Great establishment!
Amazing soup boulliabase
Very authentic French food. I can compare it to restaurants in France
Great food and service
These guys treat you like family! This place was amazing. The sangria was the best I have ever tasted, the chocolate mouses sooooooo good. A friend of mine wanted french food so we googled this place and we went there for our birthday. Prices are just a tad high but totally worth. Service with a silver spoon. I am not a person who seeks out food like this place but I am glad my friend found it. The green beans mmmmmmmmm.
Very delicious! I got the meat platter and then a salade, loved them both. It's small and dinky but great food and atmosphere.
The food was absolutely delicious! We found it online and went to it before a broadway show and loved it. It was a truly authentic French restaurant with great service, definitely would recommend!
Classic French decor and ambience, serving delicious authentic classic French food. As a vegetarian, enjoyed the gnocchi very much, and the carrot soup and creme brulee were also excellent! Also, the service was outstanding: fast and friendly and helpful! Will definitely return next time I am in the theater district.
Definitely going back! As authentic French bistro as this side of Atlantic can provide.
Fantastic French food
Great lunch specials reasonably priced and high quality.
This family owned French restaurant has a comfortable French atmosphere. The wait staff is super friendly, and the food is amazing. I would suggest if you're over 21, to get the panaché. It's made with light French beer and a sparkling lemonade.
Good job with traditional French bistro faire like Beef Burgundy (very tender) and Coq au Vin. Affordable and pleasant wines. Thet have a good pre fixe for theater goers. The French owner personally stopped at the table to give us complimentary sangria and samples of their yummy Creme Caramel. Front area is cozy with friendly (and some French) patrons but they have a room in the back for large parties. If you show up with 9 people before theater without reservations, give them at least 2 hours.
Don’t be turned off by the tight space and the slightly overpriced food, the atmosphere is truly great, especially when the accordion player gets going. Order the Boeuf Bourguignon.
Amazing food and great service. The place has a very french feel. Highly recommended
A delightful real French experience.
Wonderful local restaurant. Small but very cozy. Great food , attentive staff and very reasonable process. Highly recommend.
Good basic French menu. Good quality food.
The service was brilliant. So attentive! The food was absolutely fantastic. Will definitely come again!
My wife and I have dined here many times. It is on my short list of recommended restaurants to friends and business partners especially those locally looking for a bit of the "local french village restaurant" experience.
Good French comfort food in a cute bistro setting. Great value fixed price pre-theater menu.
ESCARGOT DELICIOUS. TARTAR DE BOEUF NOT SO GREAT. TOO OVERCROWDED. HAD TO WAIT EVEN WITH RESERVATIONS. NOISE LEVEL WAS much too loud and made it difficult to hear each other across table.
Awesome!! My favorite place in NY. The food in this restaurant was the bomb!! The best french food in NY
Small, off the beaten path in the lower level of a brownstone. Single dining room with bar (although you can bring in a bottle of wine for $20 corkage fee). Waitstaff appears to be french with an accent (can be slightly difficult to understand). Service was good for only 2 waitstaff present, although we were there before the main rush. Food was good although not quite perfect. the salad of the day is a bit plain and with the duck á ľOrange the sides were dry white rice and plain broccoli. The duck was however fantastic and the mussels, escargot and crème brûlée were also excellent. The bottled wine prices were also reasonable.
Totally authentic...amazing food, wine and bread. Chicken, salmon, all the classics served perfectly.
Such a pleasant surprise of a restaurant. Authentic French food for an amazing value. Our server, Fabien, was extremely on it in terms of recommendation, meal timing, refilling water, etc. He would even make sure the spacing of plates was perfect. I haven't had a waiter show that much attention to detail in a long time. And I don't know if it was a special Valentine's occasion promotion, but, we didn't order desert and they brought us white chocolate mousse AND fresh sangria at the end of the meal. We'll be back and I think everyone should give this place a shot!
Everything was perfect from appetizers, to entrees to desserts. Great French dining experience. Will be back again!
This is a great hole in the wall. The odor is a tad musty, but the food and wine are delicious. Definitely a local joint!
Less wait compared to other places in time square - their baked brie and onion soup is on point and is amazing. Good service and they give complementary sangria when we went!
I tend to come back to this wonderfully simple French restaurant, whenever I visit new york. It's cozy, French, and tasty. This is classic French cuisine, done simply and tastily. The lunch menu, btw, is a great value.
Not very many vegetarian options. I got the fettuccine Alfredo, which was decent. I really liked the cozy atmosphere and the French feel of the place.
I watched 5 World Soccer finals and still miss it. Yet I am Senegalese, they just knew and will always know how to treat and respect everyone irrespective of origin, class or ethnicity........
My boyfriend and I went here for dinner last night and it was amazing start to finish. Every single member of the staff helped us, the service was absolutely incredible, and the food was beyond delicious. We will definitely be coming back!
Lovely small French restaurant that is too easy to walk past. A little gem serving well prepared classic dishes plus a few specials that take advantage of seasonal ingredients. Much cheaper than a ticket to Lyons. Hospitable service and a cafe-like atmosphere means I will be back.
I'm a French teacher who wanted to bring my French students to this restaurant to experience a typical French dinner. Owner and manager would not return my calls and this evening actually hung up on me! Not impressed. I would have really liked to have had my students experience this restaurant. C'est dommage...
Wonderful French food in unassuming decor, make you think you could be in local French resturant in France. Enjoying the meal takes time, not fast food, thankfully.
Overall service was excellent! The appetizers were great along with the meals, the desert was especially tasty. I highly recommend for a night out.
Great food, lively atmosphere and genuine French bistro feel.
I came here in 2005 and again now 2017. Owner always on site. Excellent French flavor on most popular dishes. Wine is good and well priced. I love it.
I celebrated my birthday with some of my friends there. The food was amazing and the staff was awesome! Merci pour le balon, petite fee
This restaurant was so clean and friendly. The staff was just so welcoming, and the food was AMAZING. The chef is superb. I cannot wait to go there again!
It is French comfort food, with authentic French service to match. Delicious snails, pate, daily specials. simple and good
The servers and, possibly the owner, hard to tell, are wonderful. They are helpful and attentive and kind. Unfortunately, walking into the just below street level restaurant, it smells like a musty bar. The place is fairly intimate with a small bar. The escargot were okay. They were classic butter and garlic, but lacked depth and richness. The mussels were also okay. Always feel free to reach out to me on Twitter @joerazz
First the hostess smacked my friend in the back of the head with the pitcher of water. She barely apologized even though he had a welt on his head. Then she and the waiter pretty much ignored us all night. The Coq au Vin was nice, but the beef borgonoin was uninspired. All in all a disappointment.
Excellent food.and service. Cozy setting with friendly staff.
I believed the reviews and was disappointed. The meals we ordered were mediocre at best. They all came with sides of mashed potatoes that could have been sitting in the fridge all week and beans that had been on the stove too long. The wine list includes neither chateaux nor vintages so you don't really know what you are buying. There was a large flat screen in the back showing a French TV news channel. I don't think this was a question of a bad night, but rather of a theater district restaurant that is mainly catering to tourists whom it doesn't expect to come back.
Nice french place not as french as i would have liked food good people nice quaint atmosphere kinda pricey but worth it go and enjoy
I had a wonderful meal here. Mushroom soup was tasty. Chicken Cordon Bleu excellent. Creme brulee was best I have had since I was in France! Delightful.
Mices all around. Tasteless food and terrible service. This place should be shut down.
One of the best mussels I tried
I have been here when the events are kicking on Thursday and enjoyed it! The drinks are flowing when there is a happy hour but be ready when it ends!
Excellent Northern French cuisine. Their service was wonderful in a relaxed quaint atmosphere. I would definitely dine there again.
Formerly a well regarded bistro, it now serves pre-cooked frozen dinners from a no-chef kitchen. Coq au vin was a disaster. Skip it.
Very good traditional French food, family style. Very empty most of the time but don't let that worry you.
Authentic Parisian Bistro! The Coq au Vin was Divine.
Real French cuisine, every dish well prepared; service friendly. Consistent over 30 years. Soft shelled crabs, lamb, bouillabaisse on Friday; never had a dish I didn't like.
The proprietor, a very friendly French lady, made this dinner an energetic yet pleasant experience. The pre-theater prix-fixe menu was more than sufficient, with appetizer, entree and dessert. Carafes of red (a very acceptable French merlot that night) or white, priced right and quick to refill. For the pre-theater menu, escargots, followed by boeuf bourguignon, hanger steak au poivre (and a couple that we did not try) were well prepared and presented. We liked the carrot-potato mash too. A la carte featured a sea bass, grilled, and lamb brochette (on the skewer), and there were no complaints from our dates on these either (did not get to taste them, unfortunately). Oh, and the French onion soup was generous and looked delicious (she would not let me try that one!). And, it's right next to all the Broadway theaters, making it both a great dining experience and a quick walk to the show.
We visited last week while saying in the area. This place is wonderful....they really took nice care of us and made us feel special. A++
Very good Omellete and good service. Very festive and fun!!
A nice small restaurant in NY Good cuisine "a la bonne franquette" with quality wine and good big plates A very entertaining place if you have some sense of humour
Amazing service and food!
Excellent French restaurant, the lunch menu is really good.
Amazing experience !!!! The staff was superb and the meal perfect!
Terrible Coq au vin and Coquille Saint Jacques. I couldn't finish any of these 2 dishes and didn't want to try their dessert. It was my first time in this restaurant and it will be my last. There are so many good French restaurants in NYC, don't bother with this one. This is just a poor imitation of French food. There is nothing classic, delicious or authentic about this restaurant "French" food. Review from a French who looovvvveeee French food. I don't understand the Star Rating of 4.3, this is so wrong.
Delicious food, and even better service.
Delicious
Very French home cooking non pretentious normal prices a must when I'm New York.
Fab. Good and service. Fresh, classic.
Decent french bistro with good prices. Lunch combos are great and the food is tasty traditional Parisian bistro. The staff is polite and friendly :)
Excellent food and service along with a great atmosphere
What a find. Very good food at an excellent price. The restaurant has an authentic feel, the staff is very friendly and the creme brûlée is amazing.
Familiar yet unique. Warm service. Good for groups.
Fabulous meal. Felt like a quick escape to Paris!
Mediocre food. Almost tasteless and unappetizing in presentation
Delicious food, excellent service and a cozy, friendly environment!
The coq au vin was bland, and we saw a few mice on the floor.
Miles like for midtown spots. French reasonably priced.
Excellent food and service. Make sure you have Reservations.
Delicious authentic French cooking served with utmost attention, delicacy and caring.
Good ambiance, quiet, small bistro. Good food at very reasonable prices!
We met family here for lunch before my niece's graduation. The portions were generous and delicious. Very cute little place. I'd go back if I get to NYC sometime soon.
Great french atmosphere. Nice food, even nicer service
Terrific food
We celebrated our anniversary at Tout va bien this past Monday and had a truly wonderful time. My wife described her Coq Au Vin as being one of the best meals she ever enjoyed, while my steak avec frites was Paris-worthy in every way. The Escargots were outstanding (I should have ordered 12, not six). The desserts . . . oh, the desserts! The tarte tatin and creme brulee were amazing! On top of all that, the meal was made all the more wonderful by our gracious, charming and delightful host Hugo. I am only sorry that we have to limit our praise to 5 stars.
rude service and the food was just ok , my man got sick later that night could have been what we had here but all in all id keep walking
Food was good but the staff was very inattentive and involved in their own conversations and hate to say it but it smelled like wet rag.
I last ate here several years ago and my memories were pretty good. Something awful must have happened in the interim. We had four different dishes, one worse than the other. The hamburger was miraculously both overcooked and cold. It was probably reheated from someone else. The fries were ice cold. We returned them and they never came back. The "three cheese dish" was mainly heavy cream. The bouillabaisse and the coq a vin were barely edible. The place looked dirty, although we did not see any mice as reported by another reviewer. The service was cold and indifferent. At the end, an older guy brought a complimentary bowl of what looked like wine punch, direct from the next table. Non, merci.
Good food, authentic bistro fare and atmosphere. Great service. Enjoyed the whole experience.
Great ambience. I really felt like if I was in France. The portions were large for a French restaurant. It felt like real homemade food. Lots of French customers that it’s always a good sign. Loved the experience.
Reasonable prices, tasty food, good service
The food was fine, but not great. The service was pretty mediocre--they were in a big hurry to take our plates away, to the point of asking someone with a fork in her mouth if she was done. When we wanted more water there was no one to be seen and a member of our party eventually just got up and took a pitcher from the bar. I won't go here again.
Food is always incredible here. One of the best spots in the city for a great meal with good company. Great vibe and cozy atmosphere.
Quaint French (Canadian) restaurant. Very reasonably priced with a very solid and recognizable French menu. No pretention, very French laissez-faire and c'est la vie attitude. Staff is friendly and it feels like eating at someone's home. Highly recommend if you're looking for a chilled out and relaxing experience.
Authentic to the point that some of the staff insisted on addressing me in French despite me not being French at all nor uttering a single word in that language. The food was great: I had a salmon tartare and then pan fried skate. Do not go if you’re in a hurry they don’t seem to care despite the remonstrations of a grumpy can customer sitting at the table next to me. All she got was a shrug.
We stopped for a quick dinner at Tout va bien before the show. It is a cozy restaurant with French cuisine and wine. The escargot was pretty good and mussels were exceptional. I wish they had more drinks option besides wine as both of us are not wine drinkers. The service was good and quick, the stuff was friendly and helpful. We will definitely stop by again next time when we are in the area.
Stopped in here for a quick lunch before seeing a show on Broadway, and it was pretty wonderful! The croque monsieur was a wonderfully-classic representation of my favorite sandwich, my wife's flatbread was quickly made to disappear, and having a Kronenbourg is always a nice way to wrap up a lunch! Plus, it being in the basement of a townhouse makes it a truly-quintessential NYC experience!
Very good wine list with a very low markup. Great chance to try fantastic wine and enjoy good french fare and most of all a great atmosphere.
My go-to French bistro in Manhattan! A busy bustling spot with traditional bistro food perfectly cooked! Enjoy classics like escargot, steak with pommes fries, and other bistro selections. For best value, go for the Prix Fixe dinner and don't miss their mousse au chocolat! Great French wines by the glass are an added treat. Not to be missed!
Awesome French hidden in the Theater District
Old reviews suggest a fabulous hidden gem. Something clearly changed in the last year or so as noted by the reviews. Our current experience was exception. Food was okay but clearly reheated and not fresh. Not the usual blown away by French experience. Clearly now a tourist trap. Servers were cold in a french way (perhaps the most authentic part)
It's a small french restaurant so decor is relatively simple, but the food is really good. We went here with couple of friends for my wife's birthday and everybody enjoyed it a lot!
This was such a lovely restaurant. It was almost like a hole in the wall with the location, decor, and friendliness of the staff but the quality of the food was so high. If you enjoy brie, you seriously need to consider trying their baked brie! We had such a great experience that we will likely be returning on our next visit to Manhattan.
French food and the atmosphere at this location is excellent. arrived at seven, it wasn't crowded. it has a great atmosphere.
Absolutely amazing. Went for my birthday and got the best French experience I've ever had (have been to France). The drinks are great, the entrees are great and the desserts are amazing.
Food was Authentic and staff was friendly.
ATypical french food. Nice steak tartar and vine selection.
Old classic french bistro. Lots of history, I love this place
Lovely, intimate old-fashioned bistro. Simple, well-prepared food. Service was attentive. Very reliable HK place. Will go back.
Food is microwaved. Tastes old.
Loved this place. We stayed just off Times Square so this was just a short walk away. I think I read a review somewhere that you probably won’t go wrong with a French restaurant full of French folk. That’s why I chose this place and it was exactly that way - I think all the staff, owners and almost all the customers were French. Still the service was great and we didn’t feel out of place for a moment. Filet mignon was priced a little high but was done perfectly. The chicken was a bit of hit and miss affair - one piece was moist and juicy, the other was unfortunately really dry.
Unpretentious with great classic French food and warm customer service.
I have been going here and taking family, friends and business associates here for years. If you enjoy the ritzier Paris cafes such as you might find in Vavin, here is one in NYC for you. Relentlessly friendly and accommodating staff as well.
The inside is a bit smaller than it looked from the outside, but I liked the cozy feeling, and is better to control the crowed with family business. When we arrived, they had several empty tables, but they got completely packed quickly. It only has windows up front, so it was a bit dimmed even on a bright day, but that created that extra cozy feel to it. It was equipped with a large bar to the right, and tables packed as much as possible. The first thing they brought to us, which was different from any other restaurant in city we have been to, was the complimentary bread and fresh cut veggies! What a great way to start the meal, very healthy! Since we wanted to try several different kinds of dishes, we decided to order small plates, instead of any large, main dish. (I also hard that the main dishes has been influenced American food, so the appetizers are better and more authentic option.) We had Onion Soup Gratinée, Coquille (Scallop) Maison, Little Neck - Baked, Prosciutto with Melon, and Brie en Croûte. The appetizers were little over $10 average, which I felt was a bit high for the portion. I enjoyed the Brie the most, and then the onion soup. Scallop was the least memorable. The staffs there were all French, and more casual and not-so-business like. It really was kind of down to earth, warm, family-type environment. I enjoyed our dining experience here, it was not the best, but we got the atmosphere we were looking for. The price seemed high, but then again, they are sitting in Theatre District, so maybe the price hike comes with the territory. Read my full review of this restaurant and food on my food blog, foodlovergirl.
Good place
Scrumptious...best NYC neighborhood bistro
the waitress with the dark hair gave wonderful service was very polite ,professional and helpful ,will definitely be back ,was very cute also :)
Very good french cuisine. Relatively cheap for fine french meal. Escargot was very tender and hanger steak was delicious. Would definitely recommend for a nice night out.
Unfortunately just meh. Old world charm was quite nice. Service was sub par, even with only a couple other tables and 3 servers standing around. 2 cocktails served incorrectly. Escargot very oily, bread was cheap and seemed old, certainly not of French bread caliber. Steak very over cooked. Coq au vin, crab cake and creme brûlée’s all were delicious. Sangria at end was very fun. Not worth going back though.
What a wonderful lunch I had! They have a great lunch special and the service was immaculate! I will come back again!
Excellent food and service!
Really an outstanding traditional and authentic French restaurant with a classic menu, beautifully prepared food, and warm, hospitable, and kindly service. This is really a wonderful place!
Cozy place with friendly staff and hearty food. The panache was refreshing and delicious. Expect to be full from an entree alone.
Disappointed. The steak tartare should taste of meat not thousand island dressing; it's over-seasoned. The fries arrived soggy and some still had uncooked bits. The service is good but is seems the kitchen has become complacent. Come on guys, focus.
This is my favorite go-to spot in New York... It's a cozy place with great food and awesome service. You can't go wrong with moules frites & boeuf bouguignon...
Very very friendly staff (the French waitress specifically). They will make sure that you're comfortable and well served. The food is pretty good with nice presentation. Very clean especially the restroom. Nice decoration. At the end they served us a tasty sangria on the house.
Lovely ambience, great food and drinks, wonderful staff.
The best Breton restaurant of New York
Perfect authentic French food, cooked and served by real French... in a nice cosy ambiance with French music only
Great food and service... good host.... loved the ambiance....l
A charming, cozy, French restaurant with a friendly, helpful staff. Waiters are eager to assist with meal choices and ready to explain anything. A delightful dining experience!
A very nice and authentic French restaurant. They have a great lunch special from a Prix fix menu. Our waiter was very friendly and welcoming.
Not sure if I got them on an off day but both the food and service were subpar. I got the steak frites (subbed a salad instead) with foie. Skip the foie gras, just. skip. it. Steak was chewy (had to spit a large portion out to a side plate), was too hungry to turn it back (not sure it would have mattered). Waited 15 minutes for the check and another 15 minutes for them to pick up the check to process it, finally gave up and walked it up to the bar. Wouldn't go again, especially with some many other French offerings in the hood!
Fantastic steak tartar!
Excellent French restaurant in Midtown West. Its small but feels very cozy.
Delicious food, welcoming atmosphere and staff. Very reasonable prices for the quality and experience.
Friendly, unassuming atmosphere with consistently great continental food. The sauces are rich and savory. Sixty years in midtown says it all....
Really good. Great prices, great staff
Great food and service, authentic feeling. The Mousse au Chocolat is a delight !
I've been here several times and I will keep coming back. It's got old world charm and a great menu plus a nice wine selection. I've had the Sweetbreads, the Steak au poivre and the Beef Bourguignon. Try them all ... you will not be disappointed. Stay for a while and enjoy the ambiance.
Wonderful and authentic We love it
Great food, excellent service, nice relaxed environment.
I have been going to this restaurant for over 30 years. My mother brought my brother and I there - her little piece of Paris in Manhattan. The atmosphere is French bistro and transports you to the small cafes in Paris when you walk the few steps down to its location. The food options are straight from a Paris menu. The pate is fresh and delicious and their mussels are as good as any in the city. You know you are in a great French restaurant when many of the conversations are in French. Ex pats love the place and are always filling this small intimate space. Their wines are excellent and well priced. The food is as good as you can find and also reasonably priced. Try the Chateaubriand for 2 or the Boeuf Bourguignon or Coq Au Vin. Julia Childs would be proud of this place. It has been around since just after the second world war - as amazing as that is in a city where restaurants close every month.
Every time we are in NYC we have to eat here. Authentic French bistro food. Great staff.
Amazing. The waitress was really nice and friendly. The place is quaint and charming and calm during lunch. The lunch prix fix is a great deal. The pate was delicious especially with bread. The mussels were great, liberally coated with butter sauce. It was finished with a creme caramel dessert
Bad food and arrogant attitude. Very bad experience.
The set lunch menu ($15) is excellent
Small and low key with wonderful bistro style fare. Affordable and always busy.....make a reservation - a must!
French Bistro meets sports bar. Good location. OK food, but there is better bistro nearby.
Decent traditional french food with extremely friendly staff. Perfect for a post or pre theater meal.
