REVIEWS OF Toloache IN New York

Massimiliano Marcon

Food was good, service is friendly prices are average for NYC although some items are too expensive even for NYC. I find that 35$ for the guacamole trio is really too much, for example. Good selection of drinks too. The place is small and nice but it gets really noisy when it's full. I would go back.

Dale Ralston

Second stop here good food but tight seating A reservation is a must

Anirudh Sharma

Visited on Christmas, were willing to take a reservation which was nice. Wait staff was mostly nice. At 9 pm they were out of beans, took about 45 minutes to get our food, not much quantity for the price. Stuff off the vegetarian menu didn't taste great either. Solid enough ambience, but overall not worth the price, at least if you're vegetarian.

Sulima Lopez

Ambience food and drinks ar ew the Best.

Kimberly Gardens

After looking at the reviews I figured this must've been a pretty good place to eat and that it was. The only biggest turn off were the host that Saturday. Those two girls just fail to represent the business in a welcoming manner. I …

Good food. Can get very crowded on the weekends.

John Sonnick

Whenever we fly in for a long weekend, we schedule a late dinner at Toloache on our first night in town. It's in a very convenient location, the food is very well prepared and the service is both quick and expert. The rojo guacamole is especially good but it's hard to stand out with so much good food on the menu. We've probably been 8 times and we'll keep going back because every experience is as good as the last.

Cindie Dowell

Way understaffed on a Wednesday night in the theater district. We never saw our server after our initial order. So we were unable to order more food or wine. It was an incredibly disappointing experience. The food that we *were* able to get was good, but the visit had a grey cloud over it. We allowed 2 hours for dinner and left after being ignored for an hour. There are too many other nice places to go to in the neighborhood.

Andrius Stelionis

I put 21% tip on the bill but later found out they have charged 28% from my credit card, ignoring what I have put on the bill. Robbery!

Anooj Vishnubhotla

INCREDIBLE food, great service, and the ambiance is amazing. Would definitely come back!

Anton Slyusar

Tasty margaritas, great tacos and guacs.

RITI BAHLANI

The food here is very good. The place is a little noisy and needs reservations but the food is authentic!

Karla George

Great and strong drinks with fast and friendly service.

Sidd Man

Nice place, nice people, good food!

Jim Carlucci

Excellent food and drinks in a bustling establishment.

Dan Ward

Surprising find.will come back!

Michael Brocking

Taco's in the dark. Hard to see what you are eating in this place but the food & service is very good.

Mary Harper

A well oiled machine for theater goers. They ask everyone who comes in if they are seeing a show and at what time. We had a very early reservation with an 8 PM show and they never rushed us to turn over the table. The food was good and so were the drinks.

Lori Pitteruff

Very average. I know they cater to Bway /tunnel crowd? But I think they can do better.

Kimbo U.

The house margaritas were perfect, the lobster tacos were one of the best things I've ever eaten. The guacamole trio was pretty good but I've had better. Skip the grasshopper tacos.

Mike B

Great place, tasty good, beef short rib tacos were extremely tasty and flavored well - the sauce that came on it had a kick but tasted great. Service was OK - Slow to get menus, slow to get hot sauce when requested. Taste - Great!! Price - Not cheap Inside looked good, nice bar and tasty looking list of cocktails!

Naresh Sundaram

High energy restaurant. Casual Dining. Excellent Mexican Vegetarian options in addition to the normal menu. Prices are not cheap. between $14 and $19 a dish. Drinks was made well. Excellent service!

Alessandra Chieff

Overall a good option for a pre or post show meal. Definitely on the pricier side, but they can do it given the location. We told our waiter our show time and he made sure to get our food out to us asap, joking that just about the whole restaurant would be leaving en mass for their 2:00 PM matinees with us. The De Lechon Tacos and Chicken Quesadillas (both $14 on the brunch menu) were tasty and filling!

Jonathan Olsen

I have never had gourmet Mexican food prior to eating at Toloache, now I have. The food was absolutely delicious. The guacamole was creamy, sweet, and salty; the best guacamole I have ever had. The carne asada was excellent and seasoned to perfection. Tight seating like a typical Manhattan restaurant. You will likely need a reservation a couple of days in advance.

Danny Rowland

Tons of classy character packed into this place. They have large portions and good drinks. There is a second level which is a little more cozy, but at lunch time it was still packed and kind of noisy. I don't think that's a bad thing, but if you are shooting for a romantic meal you may want to pick a quiet weeknight.

Niv Pai

I would give this place 3.5 stars if I could. I understand every restaurant in this area is pricey as it sits right in the heart of theater district, a block from Times Square, but the portions they serve here are really tiny for the price they charge. The location is pretty big with two floors but they have crammed a lot of tables inside to accommodate the huge crowds that come here. The food was good (but as I said, the portions were too small). Drinks were ok and nothing impressive. The service was pretty fast and the waiter was friendly.

Joanne Delaney

Incredible modern mexican food. Beautiful cocktails. Real helpful friendly efficient staff. I'm veggie and there was plenty to choose from. Staff were knowledgeable regarding ingredients etc.

Robyn Tanis

Considering the lines out the door I was expecting better. The Margaritas were average at best. My halibut was overcooked and piled with what I thought was spinach. I learned it wasn't after putting a nice forkful in my mouth. The skirt steak was delicious but not the upscale prices charged for it.

Trevor Tanner

Great food, great service. Unique and upscale Mexican food dishes. Try the trio of guacamole. One is original one is roasted and the other is sweet with pomegranates and it's delicious. The seafood tastes fresh and the churro dessert is tasty. I've come here every time I've visited New York for the last few years and I've been lucky to get the same great waiter each time.

Evin Papowitz

Good food and excellent cocktails. Service was very good as well, especially with how busy they were.

Lenur Yusupov

One of the better place to grab a bite before a play. The spicy guac and tacos were great. Enchilada was okay. The prices are greater than a regular mexican place. Overall one of the better choices in the area.

Kush Rustagi

Restaurant week menu is amazing!

Amanda Mercer

Good place to go before a Broadway play. They ask you before they seat you what time your play is so that they can accommodate and get you out as soon as needed. Food was good, the mini churros we got for dessert were amazing!

Jasper Cordero

Phenomenal food... Right size portions... Not too big. Coconut mojito was awesome. Unique varieties of guacamole. Highly recommend!

Erol Morgan

great food and great service. we had someone allergic to tomatoes in our group and this was unlucky as nearly all the dishes had tomatoes. the staff and especially our waitress was very accommodating, however the chef did have his/her limits and in the end the menu was reduces only to a selection of 2-3 dishes. The ones we ate (non allergic ones) were however very good. Was very surprised that they didn’t have any straws available for our 2 year old daughter to drink out of, and no child friendly cup either.

sri sanan

Found this place after watching a broadway show and pretty good find actually

Janet Coacci

Found this restaurant by Googling five-star Mexican restaurants in Times Square. I can absolutely say the food was amazing it was so good! The service was amazing and the ambience was perfect no. Will absolutely come back to this lovely restaurant

Nadia Jam

Not the cheapest and always busy, so it’s obviously worth the price for the flavours, variety, friendliness and location! I had the chapulines tacos, which had about 25 crispy grasshoppers in each. First time eating insects and was a tasty delight! (the tacos are TINY portions, so you’ll want some nachos and guac along with it)

Michael Melton

Wow. The food was amazing. I’m not a guacamole type of guy but it was awesome, worth the $14. The shrimp and chicken quesadillas were really good and worth the small portions (quality over quantity!) My only complaint would be the close quarters and sub par service.

Tommy ABP

Expensive, but well worth it, Toloache is a culinary experience for those who want to spend the money. Everything was perfectly cooked and well balanced. The flavor combinations weren't rowdy and the menu was interesting. The server was helpful, friendly, and attentive.

Clova Smith

Food was soooo good. Great service! Celebrated my B-Day. I was treated like royalty!...Im keto! and the Tuna and Avacado salad was to die for!

K. Braeden Anderson

This is one of the most underrated Mexican restaurants in Manhattan. Toloache definitely focuses on QUALITY of their food over luxury and appearance. Highly recommend if you want fine dining food, without the fine dining prices.

Spartak Abdullin

Really amazing place to meet friends. Even if you are not a lover of Mexican food, believe me, you will love it here!!! My rate is a strong A+++

Spiridoula Fedkowskyj

Please note this is an expensive restaurant and you will NEED a reservation. We went at 5pm on a Saturday with a reservation, for my birthday and the food was AMAZING! The drinks were on point. For dessert I would suggest the Churros and the Toloache Martini which was perfection. The atmosphere and the staff are great. Perfect birthday dinner.

Craig Waterman

A great Mexican meal. Perfect portions and full flavor in our shrimp quesadilla and tacos. The pineapple in the quesadilla came through as anonymous sweetness due to the onions but it worked extremely well overall. Tamarind in the tacos was amazing. Top it off with potent mango mimosas and you have a great brunch you'll be thinking about hours after you've eaten. Space is cramped as others have noted, but nothing out of the ordinary - feels like an upscale taqueria. We'll definitely be back to sample more of the menu (maybe not the grasshoppers though)

J T

A quaint restaurant with a great charm in the theater district. Food was authentic, service was fantastic and food was out of this world. The brisket tacos were incredible as well as the ones with carnitas. Will definitely return when Im back in town again.

Dan Finn

Visiting from Albany for a show. Staff was nice and helpful, however, looking at the menu you are paying for the location & convenience and not the food or quality. $36 for 3 guacamoles...$15 for 2 very small corn tacos. Prices were just insane to me. Food was ok but if you are visiting the city I suggest elsewhere - you'll be frustrated

Emily Price

Had three wonderful meals. Really enjoyed the enchiladas and the wide beer selection. Unique location and fast meal which made it easy to catch a show.

Amy Seidman

Such a fun dinner before the theatre great staff and food and very accommodating to large parties

Leon Lin

Pricey (not a surprise given location) but decent food. Had the chips and guac sample which was tasty and recommended. Tried a couple of different tacos including the beef one, and also some shrimp dish and a steak dish. The tacos were alright and so was the shrimp dish, and I liked the beef one. Portions were small for the price point. Location was busy as well and staff seemed to want us to leave quickly.

Tri Tang

The service here is ok. They pretty much come and go and that's it. They had good attending time and the atmosphere was good. The food is very pricy but I believe this place is higher end. I heard this place had some Michelin stars under …

Andrew Michaelsen

The food was absolutely phenomenal!! The space is quite crowded - the tables being crammed so close together (we had an upstairs table) but this is quite common with a lot of midtown Manhattan restaurants unfortunately. So if you were wanting something a little more quite and intimate I would say look elsewhere but if that doesn’t bother you than the food is well worth it!!

Ramon Mizrachi

The food and tg Cocktails are excellent!

Brian Burns

Just amazing. Everything was great. Solid service, casual atmosphere, and wonderful food. The drinks and desserts are top notch, too.

Irit Ben-Avraham

The food was overall good, However the portions are quite small for what they charge. Cocktails were nice also. The place is too crowded, you can hardly hear yourself so be prepared.

Roli Garg

Good Mexican food near Times Square. Margaritas were excellent and refreshing! Waiters were patient and didn't rush us even though we took some time to place our order. Separate menu for vegetarians and good choices. Highly recommended!

jimb 1

Excellent Cocktails and a true authentic Menu Food was good but the place was very busy. Tables very close together so be prepared to have other guests hear your conversations.. All in all good service and cocktails/food was great

Divine

Delish! Mexican food lovers will be happy diners here at Toloache. We tried tacos, guacamole, rice and beans with protein all good. Slightly burned plantains though. Wish they gave a little more spaces between tables to make the dining experience better, they packed everybody up- I'd imagine this is to accommodate more customers. Tip: reservation is recommended, it gets busy.

Christopher Johnson

We went to see the broadway show wicked and wanted to eat before. So we decided on Mexican cuisine and were not disappointed at all. Is was good and the food was presented well and tasted great. Service wasn’t great. Cost is $$$

Jerad Graham

Having grown up in California I'm skeptical of higher priced Mexican food. This place did a great job of keeping authentic flavor in an elevated atmosphere. No complaints about the drinks, food, or service.

Maria Rodriguez

Although the rice and beans and chicken quesadilla was delicious, soup was Holy salty, EVERYTHING was cold. Never serve a hot meal cold, even though the waiter asked to bring me hot rice and beans it's besides the point. Too late!! and a Mexican restaurant that doesn't place at least a few chips and salsa on the table. I would of given a five star, lucky I didn't give it a one star.

Russell Scott

It was ok not the best. I have had better.

Priyanka Kulkarni

Small place. Not much space for seating. you pretty much sit next to other people. food taste was good. portion size was less. overall nice.

Karina Eframian

Fast and nice service before a show. You still need one to one and a half hours to have a full meal. Food and drinks are great. Cool ambiance.

Isamar Palencia

Omg definitely coming back to this place food and the Margaritas amazing

Daniel Higgins

My wife and I came here before seeing a musical on Broadway. We had been to the Toloache on Sullivan Street and we had such a great time there we decided to try this other location. Like the first time it was a delightful experience if you like Mexican. I had the Carnitas in the Hazelnut Mole sauce with red cabbage. My wife had a chicken quesadilla and we shared guacamole. Their Guacamole is one other top 5 I have ever had. The food was a great experience of making your palate enjoy how well the food is constructed in a perfect and well thought out way.

Pilar V. Arsenec

Authentic Mexican food. Absolutely delicious.

Jordan Tranchina

Food was very tasty! There are a lot of different flavors of mezcal here, which makes me want to come back!

Jimin Park

All the dish are really tasty, but they always should keep enough ingredients to serve customers. We couldn’t get taco even it is MEXICAN RESTAURANT. Also, you should make reservation if you want to sit upstairs.

Ana Castro

Great food and cocktails. Service equally good. We went on a Friday night and we had to wait a bit at the bar but we did not need a reservation. Tacos de tuétano were delicious!

Jinesh Shah

Great food..lil cramped up but good food makes up for it..

Steve Bergon

The service is excellent.. the food is delicious.. Very comfortable and not very expensive...

Sara Thrasher

This is the second time I’ve eaten at Toloache while visiting NYC. Everything is fresh and delicious. If you like guacamole, get the sampler- it is worth the price. This is also a great place to go if you have a show. They can get you in and out pretty quickly!

Maurizio La Cava

Beautiful atmosphere and outstanding food with a nice salsa music backgrons. Honestly i came for the guacamole which was the best i have ever had but the rest was same level of quality... gorgeous place and gente service. I came on my own and i found a seat at the bar. Recommended to book in advance

Nishanth C

I agree with some reviewers about the portion size. It is definitely crowded and cramped for any NY restaurants. We had to wait for 40 minutes and were able to get a table within that time, but we were seeing the online reservatiosn were messed up during the wait time. Food and services are ok. No wow factor.

Dylan Halpern

Pretty solid Mexican fare. I had the manguito cocktail which was not as amazing as I'd hoped, but we shared the queso fundido with chorizo and I had the pork belly dish. Excellent. Good environment, slightly loud for older folks.

Norm Rasmussen

Every dish ordered for our party of 8 was so good we all ended up sharing. The ceviche and anything with queso fresco was worth getting two of! The Chapulines (grasshoppers) were also worth getting again.

HI B

The best Mexican Resturant in the world

Sarah Medcalf

Amazing cocktails (try the mango and mezcal!!) and tacos to die for. Go and eat here.

Jamilah Dacosta

So I went here on a Saturday around 4pm. It didn't seem packed but the hostess said if we didn't have reservations then it would be 1-1.5hrs on the waitlist so she directed the both of us to the bar. The space inside is pretty cramped so we side shuffled our way to the bar and squeezed next to each other. The people walking behind us kept knocking into or chairs or touching them as they past by. The seat that was open next to me kept knocking hard into my chair as each new person tried to sit down. That I blame on the rudeness of people not being courteous and the fact that there was little space. We ordered the Tropical Margarita(2), The Paloma, The Suadero taco, and the Arroz con Crema. Our bill was $101. The taco was 2 bit size appetizers that had a lot of meat which I appreciated but had a sliver of avocado, no onions, and too much cream sauce. It was also luke warm and $15. The Arroz con Crema was listed as a main course and was quite small. I thought it was a kids meal. There were literally two pieces of: shrimp, scallops, octopus. We didn't have a spoon for the rice but it was maybe 6 forkfuls. It also had a hint of spice that was tasty and not overwhelming. This dish came out at the same time as the app and was room temperature. This dish cost $34. Both meals were tasty and would have been a true delight if cheaper and hot. The Margaritas were $14 & $15 each. For the lack of space, rude diners, room temperature food, overpriced lunch, empty seats from start to finish, and plain ambience I would not recommend this place. There are plenty of other options in the area.

Chirag Gandhi

Awesome Mexican cuisine...always

Susan Anderson

Delicious, beautiful, freshly prepared food and superb service.

GA F

Surprised at the glowing reviews. My carne asasda was super tough. The chips they provide are very thin. You can get better chips at any supermarket. And my drink was a bit watered down. The space is cute, but the quality of food and beverage is not there.

Jim Bergman

Lobster tacos were amazing, a bit pricey

I. M.

Terrible place I would Not recommend Nobody to this place is not worth it for that money for what they charge I’m sure there’s better places in Manhattan that u can spend ur money and better food.

shashank pandey

Food was great and very ambient atmosphere, removed one star because waiter(some old dude) was very rude.

jacob mendez

The food wasn't that good to be so overpriced. Such tight space.

Luis Menchaca

Really good food. Nice little spot for dinner. Staff was great and friendly. Try the enchiladas borrachas!

Judith

Hard to give a midtown restaurant 5 stars, but this place is a solid 3. Came here on a weekday and it was cramped inside, thankfully we had reservations at 6:30PM, otherwise we'd be waiting for an hour. For a Mexican restaurant, the menu was pretty pricey. The quesadillas and tacos were upwards of $16 more, which is expensive even for midtown standards. Portions are okay, and flavours alright. There are worse places to go, but definitely first on my list.

Brian Donaldson

Fun atmosphere and friendly service, but the food is mediocre unfortunately. I had the traditional guac and the carne asada. Niether were anything special and rather bland.

David Lisy

Delicious and creative dishes, superb drinks, and a warm ambience. Can't go wrong. The wait staff can be a little too sales-y one minute and then hard to find the next... Not enough to lose a star and the restaurant is in a tourist heavy area, so it comes with the territory. Just a warning to get that second drink order in ;-) or not to be afraid to say your full.

Meredith Dalzell

Food was great and wonderful margaritas! Our waitress was outstanding and she even refilled our water!!

Jake Freyer

I’ve been here a few times, and it’s pricey but the food is great. There’s always one item on the menu with grasshoppers in it, which are really worth trying. The rest is just cool, modern interpretations of Mexican dishes; last time I went they had a “Mexican Hanukkah” menu on, with things like whitefish guacamole and latkes with horseradish salsa. (They were surprisingly good.)

Jennifer Dhanraj

Lovely decor and service. Delicious food. I had the chicken tacos and hub had the enchiladas. We had the tres leches limon for dessert.

Tegan Murdock

Wonderful food and service. Very dim though made it hard to read menus. Music was a little loud but overall good experience

Nicola Campbell

Great food n service

Dickens Celestin

Excellent Latin American food... make a reservation... the place was packed

Sammy

Just absolutely spectacular frozen margaritas. Made a reservation online still had to wait an additional like 15 mins. Lovely ambiance love the decor. Thought it was bit pricey.... But I would come back here for like special occasions. Also was requested to leave so they could use the table for another group. But we did get tequila shots to make it up.

Jon Morgan

Loved it. Portions leave a bit to be desired though

Lynette Miller

Loved food..drinks..service great! A little crowded and noisy but no problem.

Javid Ishal

Food is good. Service not so much. They are too busy and trying to just rush everything

Melissa Guarino

Amazing food and service

Margue Wise

The name suites the place well. Great flavor. Just be warned, it's cash only. If I were pick my fave dish it would be the flautas augadas.

Abhayad Kamat

Good solid Mexican food. Good service. Crowded due to pre theater crowds but fast service if you tell them you have to leave by ... Excellent margaritas. Make 5pm reservation for pre theater.

Chrissy Livergood

Fantastic food before a show. Had the carne asada, queso fundido and a margarita, all delicious!

Steven F

Very good salsa,tacos were small

Rick Loftus

Delicious food (Oaxacan-influenced, great mezcal and tequila drinks), great service, and they were able to seat 3 of us right away on a Sunday without reservations (Refinery Rooftop was a 90 minute wait). Is it pricey? Of course- it’s in Midtown near expensive hotels. Reviewers should not fault an apple for not being an orange. If you want inexpensive Midtown has multiple Chipotle locations. I’d go back here in a heartbeat.

rahul agarwal

Over priced cheap food. This place is bang in the midst of the ever busy times square area so it's usually packed. However, the food isn't something that you are rave about. It's okay food. The menu isn't great either especially if you are vegetarian. But, they are all priced as if you are in a Michelin started restaurant. Space is tight but the added benefit is that with your food your also get to here interesting conversation from your neighboring tables. It's like food for the gut and food for the mind. That's the only silver lining I can find. To summarize, so so food, unimaginative and dull menu, priced like a Ferrari and as spacious as a coffin.

Maddalena V

Had dinner here tonight. We were sitted at the bar even if there was plenty of free tables, nominally reserved (no customers showed). 3 guacamoles, 1 cheviche, 1 tacos, 1 beer and 1 margarita. The 3 guacamoles were amazingly excellent. The cheviche was good but low quantity and served in minitacos not mentioned in the menu; the brisket tacos were so salted that should have been sent back. Unfortunately 1 morsel to taste, 2 morsels to verify and the taco was gone. The attendant was extremely rude and unwelcoming: he was clearly judging us from our sporty dresses. His bad: we would have ordered more had he not been so unprofessional.

BrainArt Photography

The ambiance was nice. HOWEVER, as soon as we had to interact with the waiter and serving staff, the experience failed drastically. 4 out of 9 people had issues with their dishes. The servers just placed food in front of random people, so after the 3rd time correcting it ourselves we decided to do the grunt work for them. Upon returning the 4th dish to the kitchen we were approached by an upset person, who we later found out was the manager. As the evening began to wind down, one of my coworker’s food was removed before they completed it. So when they asked for the taco that was taken, one of the waitstaff came back, and literally tossed the taco and plate onto the table. He then went to his coworker and began to point at our table in disdain. Terrible TERRIBLE TERRIBLE... I will continue to spread the word on this experience, because it was absolutely disgraceful.

Kelly Bartel

Great service and up scale and interesting mexican

Lucy P

Very nice and friendly place.. .. BUT very small place, we had to squeeze in to sit.. but food was great.

Kurt Maitland

Great food, nice place for a group meal.

Lisa Cas

This place was wonderful. Service was great drinks were great, friendly staff. Just a lil tight seating but cant complain.

Damien Torres

Every time I come, the food is as amazing as it was the first time. The Arroz con crema is godly!! Their margaritas are second to none.

Zsófia Kothencz

Amazing good quality food

Venessa Vendemio

Found this spot near The Gershwin Theater. Drinks & the Guac are a MUST! Platters were a nice portion & very tasty. The service & staff were very attentive & pleasant. We walked into a mostly empty place at 430 & were told we may be asked …

Debby Campbell

The food was ok, i felt a little rushed not sure if that was the norm or because it was mother's day. I had to tell two different waiter that we needed more chips for the table.Avoid of you have a delicate stomach
