You will see all the reviews of real people who purchase the products and services of Tocqueville (Restaurant) in New York.
To this day the business gets a score of 4.6 stars out of 5 and the rating is based on 180 reviews.
As you can read, its rating is almost the highest, and it is founded on a very large number of opinions, so we can say that the evaluation is quite credible. If many people have bothered to rate when they've done well with the service, is that it works.
As you know, we do not usually stop to place scores when they are correct and we usually do it only if we've had a problem or incidence...
This Restaurant is included in the category of French restaurant.
This place is amazing. Highly recommend the lunch special. It's 5 different courses with a great mix of flavours. All the plates were awesome. Great service, great ambience and food, what more can you want! :)
Very good food and setting. Liked it highly. Some dishes were quite similar, and I would personally see larger differences between the dishes for the price, hence a star of.
A friend and I were looking for a place to celebrate our frienniversary (I know) and since she loves French and French-inspired things, Tocqueville was the perfect choice. It’s upscale enough to impress but at pretty approachable at the same time. She had the Duck served with a jus (medium rare, and tender, and delicious) and I had their signature Uni Carbonara, which may have been the most decadent thing I’ve ever eaten. It’s a bit on the pricey side but their extensive wine list alone makes it worth a visit.
What an experience. Food was spectacular. Great service.
so so food.
Fantastic dining experience. Service is immaculate and the decor is charming. Will return
Delicious with great service
Wonderful meals and place..
Wonderful dinner, loved the truffle risotto
Very nice place and the attentiveness of the employees is superb! Yes it’s expensive but the food and service makes it worth it.
pleasant when i remember to go there
Really nice place for dinner, great service and the food was excellent!!
Try and get a seat upstairs to take in the classy environment as a whole. The seasonal menu is spectacular – Cauliflower Soup, Grilled Octopus and Risotto.
Perhaps the most underrated place in New York. The service was absolutely wonderful, the food was sublime. It ranks with the best of them such as Jean-Georges and Bouley. It is that good. I had poached lobster with a drizzle of butter sauce, which was fantastic; and grilled octopus, which was the most tender I have had it. Dessert was quite stunning also. A must try... Ranks with the finest in the city and this place is not to be missed.
I wanted to like it but the food was just okay. Service and decor are impeccable, however.
Great prefix lunch
Delicious food and a deliciously warm atmosphere.
Very disappointed! Wagyu beef that I ordered was not what I was severved, it wasn’t even filet! Very poor quality. My wife was served lobster that was fishy. Not worth the money at all!
Muito agradável e menu excelente.
Very good place and services. Feel very comfortable and quiet. Tasting menu for the lunch is definitely recommended. I will certainly try again when it is updated.
We have eaten here over ten times over the past few years, and almost always it has been wonderful. The rare occasion it was not had to do with near diners, not the restaurant. For this evening, we treated a friend and ourselves to a 7-course tasting menu. I cannot say enough about how wonderful and varied the food was, but everything, for each of us, was just wonderful. As a minor note, we had mixed drinks instead of wine, and I would heartily recommend trying the Thinking Man's Man, a wonderful whiskey-based drink that seemed a perfect accompaniment to every dish.
Can't say enough good things about this restaurant. Cuisine is authentic and original, and the decor is very classy and pleasant. Will definitely return.
The best
Good food (truffled grits with egg is amazing!) and great quiet atmosphere. Just wish they would mix up the menu a bit!
I recentently had dinner with my wife for the third time, the service and the food are excellent, always start w tartare and champagne..
More expense than an average night out, but if having a conversation is most important, but you don’t want to make any concessions to food, atmosphere, service etc. This is one of the rare favorites I have come back to and it has never disappointed me. Every time I have left here, I have walked away thinking how much I have enjoyed my company, and how I wished I saw them more often. Everything else about you the evening was perfect, the food, the service etc. I’m writing this review now, because I also realize this restaurant does not call attention to itself at all. But it delivers an invaluable opportunity to enjoy the time with your company, and it doesn’t try to take any credit.
The Artic Char was out of this world as was the Sea Bass. The service was great too. Looking forward to coming again!
Still our favorite. Marco never lets you down
The waiter can't recommend a wine to go with you dinner... the sommelier would get mad.
Truly amazing food and a five course chef's tasting menu that turned out to be more like 10 courses (5 reasonable sized ones and 5 small ones). The single ding was the deserts which although creative and beautiful where nothing special when it came to taste. A great wine list, knowledgeable and attentive wait staff and great creative flair will have us returning.
My favorite restaurant in New York City. It is hidden, and not advertised as much as a typical Michelin restaurant. (It is not a Michelin but it reminds me of one). For this reason, you won’t find many tourists here. I would say this restaurant is for foodies. The service and quality are similar to that of a Michelin restaurant, but the prices are better and portions are slightly bigger. I always feel full and satisfied after dining here. Been coming here for 8+ years and it’s consistently wonderful. The presentation of food here is great as well. Highly recommended!
Elegant, upscale restaurant with excellent food and outstanding service. Highly recommended .
Excellent service & the entrées were delicious
grown-up atmosphere, very good food. the pre-theatre menu is a bargain.
Spend my birthday here. Menu was awesome.
Food was great except for desert which was ok. Sauces are very good. Foie gras was fantastic. This is a definite repeat on our list but just a touch pricey.
Nice place, it was quite and surrounded by beautiful and decelerated flowers once sat in the bar. I was enjoy the time here a lot and friendly people here as well:)!
The food and the service are nearly perfect. I've done the tasting menu there twice with my husband. We don't eat meat or poultry, and both times the chef has created a five plus course meal for us with amazing and delicious seafood options. This time we were given the most delicious chocolate soufles for dessert (along with house made ice creams and sorbets). A wonderful, beautiful and delicious meal. Not cheap, but worth the money for a very special night out. We'll be back!
Great!
The seven course tasting menu was an amazing experience. On a Saturday evening at 6:30, the venue was mostly filled by more mature diners celebrating special occasions. The sea urchin angel hair carbonara was particularly memorable - so creamy and full of flavor!
Fresh French cuisine, with the menu derived from the chef's daily visits to the local farmer's market produce at Union Square. All courses are visually stunning and expertly prepared. Atmosphere is a relaxed oasis from the frenzy of NYC. Prix fixe lunch offers many choices for a bargain. Desserts are a sublime finish.
The service is good and I really like it. I will go there again and again and again!
The food here was excellent and the service was warm and friendly. Try the tasting menu. It's a bit old fashioned looking, but somehow it feels inviting and comfortable. The lighting contributes to the coziness. You won't go wrong here.
Great private room upstairs for the celebration dinner.
Green market lunch was an inexpensive way of trying out the menu. Liked the pastries, though the beet salad and cod were alright.
Fantastic prix fix lunch!
This is fine dining at its best. All courses are amazing and served with fantastic execution and finesse by the staff. With explanations of every menu item and preparation it is a perfectly conducted orchestra of a dining affair. The chef is very talented and the atmosphere is light and chic. I went there with a dinner for my family a few years ago and was there recently on my own to see the chef and staff. They love their craft and are doing some great things
The sea trout was properly cooked, I liked the pairing, the staff was friendly, decor was nice. I didn't get the five star feel.
Really great place. Love the seared foie gras and the crab linguine appetizer was delicious. Service was very good as well. Highly recommend giving this place a try.
One of the best places I have dined at; and I am not easy to impress. Exellent food, superb service, a bit pricey though. Highly reccomend. Truly high-end spot. Perfect for a date, very intime atmosphere.
great
I actually like the dishes and customer service, good location to my home. The employees are always welcoming. Would recommend to others.
Great food and wine, service could be better for such a fine dinner place
We were two couples celebrating my fiancé's birthday. This was THE best dining experience ever! We all had the 7-course tasting menu without wine (shared a bottle instead). From the plating to presentation to the staff, everything was flawless!! In fact, without request, we had two separate fish course and ended with the most succulent duck breast ever! To boot, got to tour the kitchen as we were one of the last tables in the restaurant!
This was by the far best Italian food I have had in the US.
Favorite intimate dinner in Manhatten. Perfect atmosphere, scale, comfort, and most of all, food. Absolutely brilliant.
Fancy setting and excellent service. I enjoyed the high ceiling and everything about the place felt very luxurious. Perfect souffle
Extraordinarily expensive and worth it. Special occasions are especially fun. Enjoy the uni.
Delicious food, and a great atmosphere! I tasted the freshness in the ingredients and the care the chef put into the food. My server was very polite, too! Wonderful restaurant!
Impeccable service, stunningly exquisite tasting menu, beautifully understated yet dramatic dining room...the perfect experience. I yearn to return!
Delicious food with great wine pairing in a calm and comfortable atmosphere and professional staff. Keep coming back to this place over several years already and they always meet all expectations. There's also a private area on the second floor, overlooking the main dining hall, that's great for hosting private parties.
the aspargus apetizer was nothing special nor was the foie gras which simply tasted like butter with no complexity. however, the food was nicely presented and i simply could not get enough of the diver scallops!
Nice place, wonderful service but wasn't impressed with the cuisine. Seafood wasn't good but the appetizers are ok.
OK
If you want to splurge, try the chef's 5-course tasting menu for an unforgettable experience. Hold off on the alcohol, though, or you might feel overstuffed by the end of your meal. Chef Marco created a wonderfully balanced and intricate meal for our party of 4, giving us two pairs of different dishes for each course so that we could share and taste even more flavors. After our meal, we were even invited to tour the kitchen and meet Marco. He described to us how the massive custom cook station in the middle of the kitchen had to be lowered into the basement by crane before the first floor was built over it. What an unforgettable fine dining experience!
We just had drinks and appetizers at the bar. The bar keeper and the manager were both friendly and great. My son and his fiancee love the soups at this place.
Simply awesome from the food, atmosphere to the service. I had the cheddar salad and beef grilled filet mignon. Andrea had the lobster and soup. Their souffle dessert was to die for as well. Just a terrific dining experience. Yes it is pricey, but this should be a 5 star restaurant. It will never be confused with Taco Bell.
Price fixe lunch is great and restaurant is serene and is quiet enough for conversation
Excellent food with a focus more on delicate flavors and palates; not that they shy away from the bold, it's just not wild or crazy. And the way they do it, it's a good thing. Very pleasant, soft, upscale atmosphere (bordering on dated color tones); especially considering there's no natural light getting in past the foyer/bar.
It was really good experience for me amazing food!
Exceptional restaurant, food is great, service and drinks are great but the place is a bit small.
Everything about our evening at Tocqueville was perfect. We went to celebrate our mom’s special birthday and we could not have made a better choice. At many restaurants the appetizers and desserts outweigh the entrees. Not here. Each course was devine. The asparagus soup, Atlantic char tartare and mushroom risotto appetizers were amazing. And those appetizers just set the stage for the red snapper, smoked duck and wagyu steak. And then the desserts. The chocolate soufflé and citrus cheesecake ended a really perfect meal. The service was impeccable and friendly and went out of their way to accommodate the one gluten free allergy. We cannot wait to return. Tocqueville made our New York weekend so special.
still delivering beautiful, intensely flavored food in a serene setting, tocqueville's service had slipped a notch--to confused--on my recent visit.
such a good french restaurant. beautiful for family dinners, dates, power meetings, anniversaries, or popping the question. also amazing private room
Delicious food and gracious service!
Good Quality Of Food

Incredible
Absolutely superb from start to finish. The service was impeccable. The cuisine was wonderfully balanced with something for every pallet. The portions were perfectly sized so that you could enjoy an appetizer, main course and dessert. Presentation was simply beautiful. Very highly recommended for a special occasion.
i was very impressed. the restaurant exceeded all expectations. i do not recall the service being so attentive from the moment you walk in to the last minute on the way out. the food was imaginative and delicious. beautiful and very comfortable ambiance.
We came for dinner , my wife made a reservation. The restaurant offers great , more intimate atmosphere, knowledgeable staff , good food
Best grits in NY!
Extremely expensive place. Don't even think about going there without being able to spend few hundred dollars only for food. For this price they should also - at least pay a hostess who speaks English properly.
Beautiful kitchen, very confortable. At the reception Fatima was great, happy to serve the customer. The only things, is to quiet.
A very good restaurant. The starter in particular (the truffle grits) was delicious. Only rating it 4/5 because I thought though the food was very good, for the prices, it really needed to be exceptional (my main of the scallops was a bit too vinegary).
This is definitely the best french restaurant that I have ever been. The price is reasonable and the people here are very professional and friendly. I really like the free dessert that they gave us after dinner. The chocolate tasted fantastic. Foie gas was my favorite dish. Amazing protion. Will definiltely come back again. (My friend liked the lamb so much) ;-)
my family and I had dinner there this night, it was my son's birthday and I have to say the dinner was excellent, the service was way above par. it's expensive, but worth every penny. Everything was super fresh and very clean tasting, I enjoyed the black sea bass very much. Not a lot of sauces and creams. They let the food speak for it's self. when toasting my son the waitress heard us and at the end of the meal she brought out a special desert just for him. he enjoyed it very much. I will go back again.
Exquisite
Our waiter, whose name I wish I could remember, made our dining experience very special. When he heard my dad rave about the amuse-bouche he brought over a second serving which tickled my dad. We all ordered different entrees and shared and everything was very well done. It's also a fairly quiet, intimate restaurant which my parents appreciated.
Too many birds inside of the restaurant. Unfortunate for atmosphere and sanitation.
Fantastic French forward restaurant with gorgeous settings and nice service. I highly recommend the smoked duck and lobster entrees.
Lovely place with excellent food experience
Food is consistent and I'd argue their service is some of the best in the city
I went here today. It was small but fancy and cozy place. Food was good. However, I give you 1star for some reasons. 1st prix fix . I ordered a la carte . 1st salmon tar tar.2nd cod Amount was exactly same as prix fix but I paid 52. Prix fix was 29.... 2nd. I heard some one saying f words...at back stage... Etc.. I have more to say but 20 more dollars for the same amount and almost same menu....hmmm...sad
The $29 lunch pre fixe is good value. Appetiser was a delicious butternut squash soup. Highly recommend this, the portion size is the same as the main menu too. For mains I ate the duck leg parmentier. It was tasty but make sure you like potato. It's like a pie without pastry - a duck shepherds pie. Personally I don't think the duck shines in this dish. Dessert was an apple tart. It was good. On par with other apple tarts. The honey ice cream was a nice addition. Don't eat here if you're in a hurry. Service was slow, and the place was pretty empty. Maybe only one chef?
Delicious butternut squash risotto!
Perfection! Try the scallops with foie gras.
Absolutely wonderful experiences from ambiance to food and service! Every dish is delicious with well balanced flavours and textures. Service is definitely top notch. A good collection of cocktails and wine.
Five stars! Waitress on point. Atmosphere great and food is divine. The food makes you feel like your in Italy . Really nice people and nice service. Thanks guys!
Great food, great service and a relaxed and quiet atmosphere.
I discovered Tocqueville last New Year’s Eve, and it’s been my go-to place ever since when special people come to town. My latest visit to this understated yet elegant Union Square New American-French restaurant with a French flare and amiable, well-trained servers brought rave “reviews” from the entire table. Seven days a week, the restaurant offers an excellent value prix fixe menu ($29). The menu consists of three courses — appetizer, main course and dessert — as well as an amuse-bouche and interesting housemade bread à go-go. In the evening, Tocqueville offers a pre-theatre menu at $44, as well as a full à la carte menu. We went for Saturday lunch, when the restaurant was unusually uncrowded, so we sat on the ground floor from where we could enjoy a view of the restaurant’s refined décor. The dining room was pleasantly quiet with tables set widely apart and well-designed acoustics, allowing us to concentrate on the marvelous food and have good conversation too. As mentioned, the prix fixe offers three courses, with two choices per course. From the appetizers, everyone tried both offerings, the “creamless sunchoke soup” and the “salad with mushroom terrine”; both dishes were flawless, the flavors bold but balanced. Prior to our appetizer arriving, we were served an excellent “roasted asparagus and beets” amuse-bouche, a great start to our culinary adventure. Throughout the lunch we were also able to enjoy an assortment of homemade bread, namely, brioche, focaccia filled with olive chunks, and crusty, white sourdough with homemade butter (you heard me right, homemade). For the main course we all opted to for the “pan roasted hake” served with Brussels sprouts and other baby root vegetables, although the other main course option did sound quite flavorsome though not quite as original: “housemade gnocchi” with rainbow Swiss chard, toasted garlic, roasted mushrooms and Parmigiano. We all chose the hake because it’s not common to find extra-fresh, perfectly-cooked hake in NYC, and we were pretty sure that Tocqueville would not disappoint us in this regard. Sure enough, the hake, grilled primarily on one side and cooked to perfection, conserved all its moistness and flavor, while the root vegetables provided a perfect, faintly bitter compliment to the slight sweetness of the fish. For dessert, we tried both the “bittersweet chocolate bon bon” served with espresso ice cream and the trio of homemade sorbets, of which the dark chocolate was the most worthy of note. In addition, the chef graciously offered us a complimentary dessert of warm rhubarb pie with yoghurt and cheese ice cream. Roger Dagorn, sommelier and Sake Samurai at Tocqueville restaurant in Manhattan The wine did not fall short of our expectations either, as the sommelier, Roger Dagorn, who besides being a master sommelier — one of the best in the world — is also a Sake Samurai for Tocqueville’s sister sushi restaurant, 15 East, just down the block, recommended a reasonably priced, dry German Riesling ($50), and we were lucky enough to catch the last bottle they had in stock. The wine was both earthy and fruity and matched up perfectly with all our courses. Dining at Tocqueville is memorable. You eat exceptionally well and you’re treated well. I’d recommend it for anyone who is looking for a gourmet meal on a modest budget.
This place was a quiet and perfect restaurant for us and Anousheh was very nice THANK YOU SO MUCH The staff were very nice and funny I enjoyed this place
The beat place i every been to it is just the best and graet awsome food please try you will love it
We had a tasting menu and everything was very flavorful and just right. The service was attentive but could be refined. There wasn't enough servers for the night and it showed in the level of service. They compensate lack of servers with many more support staff, which is fine but expected a little bit refined service overall. The tasting menu featured some of their popular and signature dishes and glad we got the tasting menu to try them all.
Had made reservations for an early dinner at Tocqueville and what an amazing experience I had. The restaurant is really fancy, and has an amazing setup. Yes, food here is expensive, but extremely delicious. The chef kept sending some complimentary hors d oeuvres while working on my order, which included a daily special appetizer which was seafood based ($20) and my entree which was Sriracha Marinated Grilled Filet Mignon ($44). Food quality is just top notch... presentation, flavor and portions is absolute perfection. Service stands out as well, and the staff is extremely welcoming and explains each and every dish to you, when it's served. Highly recommend this place for a special occasion/celebration evening or if you win the New York Lottery!
Quiet, spacious and wonderful.
Superb 7-course tasting menu plus wine pairings. Out of this world tastes spread over ~3 hours. The chef was able to accommodate one of us disliking seafood by providing different dishes, and we even got different wines at times - complete with refills. Portions were generous - perhaps a little over-generous. The only disappointment was the slightly slow service to start with, but once that was over, we were looked after very well. Oh yes - avoid the corner banquette tables, which are rather squashed, and too close to the adjacent table. (We were glad we asked to be moved.)
this has become our favorite restaurant in nyc, in fact far exceeding tabla and, foodwise, as good as jean georges, but singularly less pricy and snooty. the atmosphere is exquisite and unusual for the city: roomy, quiet, subdued elegant decor. service attentive and nearly flawless. and the food is extraordinary. well described by wait staff, beautifully presented, dishes complex & balanced.
This is the quietest restaurant I've been to in New York in a long time. We wound up here because we were having a birthday brunch for my boyfriend's mother. We had it on a Saturday. We had the entire restaurant ourselves for most of the French which was perfect. Perhaps not for them, but it was so refreshing to be able to hear each other with a party of 8 especially when the birthday girl is in her 80s. The food was outstanding. Almost every dish was beautifully executed and delicious. My only failing on the whole meal was my duck main course. It's not that it wasn't good. It was just not as good as the other dishes in terms of complexity and flavor. It's not a place that's popular for brunch apparently. There's no natural light in the restaurant. But it's really a gorgeous room and I would highly recommend it for a wonderful meal.
As far as upscale restaurants go, this is perhaps my favorite one in New York. The food is excellent, the service is superb, and the interior is interesting and different.
elegant dining room, sophisticated table setting awaiting you, superb and imaginative food preparations (seared foie gras over divers scallops? oh, my!) and team service attentive to the point where you feel like you are the only guests in the room. how belle epoche is that? the whole evening in this restaurant was exceptional; it felt like a command performance for a truly special occasion.
