REVIEWS OF La Bonne Soupe IN New York

Luka Lazarevic

A one star is generous for this place with poor service and food. Didn’t even ask if we wanted a beverage until we had to ask for it. Food was just bland and cold. Very pricey for something that we ordered and just not a place to go eat in New York.

Jeremy Sanchez

I came here for lunch on my visit to New York. I had a croque monsieur which was delicious if not a tad small for the price. My girlfriend got the French onion soup which she said was very good. There were many French people at the restaurant so you know it is good!

Naseer Malik

Insistent on their 15 minimum. I went for soup and don't drink. Bad attitude to top it off. And the ambiance doesn't hold up when attitude is up.

Molly Sugarman

Good food but we were kicked out of our reserved table to make way for a large party. Flat out asked to leave before we finished our coffee. Rude.

Katherine Vaughn

Undercooked burger, salad swimming in dressing, substandard chocolate mousse. Kinda divey and barely passing for French cuisine. You can do better for the money.

Linda Napoli

I've been to this restaurant numerous times and have always enjoyed it. Service is good, food is usually very good. Tonight's lamb entree was horrible. Grizzle in every bite, but one. Would never order it again.

Agathe Blanchard

Very likeable little French restaurant! I love the onion soup here.

David Quiroga

Best place in midtown. An institution of the neighborhood and a must do. Do not miss this gem.

Soul Nisha

I always love new York City cheese cake until we found la bonne soup

Megan Allen

Great People! Nice and comfy restaurant. I recommend the crepes! The cheesecake and chocolate mousse are delicious. Great for families, and not tourist-y at all!

Suzie Iwadare

Their French onion soup is the best! Servers are friendly. Space is very tight though.

AJ Lee

It was a weekday early dinner (5ish). We were craving a good french food, carrying a baby in the car seat, perfectly fits in one seat without a problem. The attitude of the host was not welcoming, we wanted to be seated in the first floor where plenty of tables were available, barely 3 tables were occupied and they assigned us a table upstairs, in a corner right next to a door that looks like the restroom entrance, didn’t allow us to select our own table considering it was only one table occupied among plenty more available. We just wanted to have enough space to place the car seat with my baby. Unfortunately we couldn’t try all the tasty food supposedly they have.

Purgatorys demise

Lovely area to escape the city for a short while, amazing French onion soup course. Comes with a drink and dessert, all incredible just wish the soup was a little thicker

Tigon

Great little place I pass by every time I’m in that area! I always order the soup special with salad. The dressing is great!

Whit Walker

The French onion soup is the best! Their price fix special is great - soup, salad, wine and desert. We go here whenever my family comes in town. A true NYC institution.

Juan Franco

An extraordinary french restaurant, all dishes very, very good; the tarte tantin superlative. Good service, nice ambiance. To recommend it

John Williams

Onion soup was way too salty. Waiter kept pressuring us to buy more food. Drink was awesome though.

Charlie UK

Cute little French soup place in Midtown. It's pretty hidden, but I enjoyed my French Onion Soup, which had a special deal around it. I would definitely recommend to those who are in the area!

P. K.

Poor place with the worst onion soup I've ever tasted. Overprised for off-quality food.

Cheryl Kamen

New owners, good food & service

Alex Pintado

Great place to eat. Clean, fun and friendly atmosphere. Delicious onion soup and a delicious Lamb burger. If possible, ask for Sebastian..... the best waiter in the house. Enjoy your stay and "bon appetit!" @turistandoemnovayork

Robert Quinn

Excellent, L'Italian crepe was a little bland.

Sharon Ganot

Was ok, good service, food was ok but not great. Nice ambiance.

Leo Stanton Towne

Great place for lunch on a busy day.

Judy Anderson

Great French Bistro ambiance. Delicious, authentic French food and burgers. Our only critique is that the Quiche Lorraine was too salty.

Alicia Zhang

Food was pretty good. Very New York atmosphere. The menu is in French. Lasagne was really good and extremely light for a usually heavy dish. Service was slow and not very attentive just a heads up.

Maggie Marsden

One of my favorite places. Nothing fancy, just great food and service. The soup special is a great value.

Ryan Howard

Just go and tell me what you think after. You'll be happy

Caitlin Carter

This is a great place for,m some good, not great French fare. The prices can't be beat, and the staff is lovely. Tomato soup is the best.

Johann Quessada

A traditional French menu and a cute atmosphere. I really enjoyed it. It’s been around forever

Sharon Ho

This restaurant was great. A very cozy space with an amazing French onion soup. Some menu items are a tad misleading though. For example, my boyfriend ordered an item on the "hamburger" menu without knowing that he wasn't getting a hamBURGER but a hamburg STEAK instead. Also, as part of the prix fixe menu, I ordered the skirt steak, expecting an actual steak, but I got skewered steak instead. The food wasn't bad, but the waiters could have let us know beforehand what to expect.

Art Schumer

Very cute French soup and casual restaurant. Love the French onion soup with a glass of wine.

Ian Burns

Very cute little place with great French soups.

Chad Zepeda

Food was delicious, service was good. Space is tight inside, but that's to be expected in NYC. We go several times a year when guests come to town. Great place to eat.

Matthew Solomon

In the city again, and decided to head back to La Bonne Soup. Excellent decision. The food was great, and the service and atmosphere make you feel like you're in a circa 1940's French film. Even if you're not completely comfortable with French cuisine, I'd highly recommend.

Stopped by on a hunch, was in the area and five guys was not appealing. I got their la bonne soupe :) vegetable based tomato soup(vegan I believe!), salad (fresh leafy greens), house white wine and a caramel creme for dessert (like a flan dessert). It. Was. Delicious! Very cozy setting that was (at night) candle lit. 1 less star because my waitress was not very attentive to me although she was very warm and attentive to the couple on either side. I'd still return nonetheless

Jason Auerbach

Great food and atmosphere. Sit on the 2nd floor. Much nicer ambience

Adrienne Crosby

Amazing! There is a $25 special... soup, salad, dessert, and a glass of wine .... Great value!

Mary Ronner-Behrendt

Our annual favorite for Christmas in NYC with special friends. It is part of our being! Excellant food and good service!

Elizabeth Brunson

Wonderful place!!! I have been coming here for over 35 years, many memories. Also there was a wine spill incident with waiter apologizing profusely, manager coming over immediately with her card and dry cleaner coverage, complimentary wine, etc. Thank you!

M B

The best French onion soup I've ever had.

Justice H

The place offers a large variety of delicious food. I loved dining here. Employees are always helpful, prices are fair and the spot is always well organised.

Timothy Huber

Charming place with great food. Love the bean soup.

Octavio Meira

Muito boa, bistrô movimentado e de bom preço/qualidade. I came back for NYE and was badly treated. At 22 HS they almost invited me to leave, told me the Kitchen was closing, and didn't ler me ask for a dessert ir expresso. For my surprise others tables downstairs were being served correctly. Too bad

Nadiia Kachynska

Awful service and the worst food we ever tried in the North America. Meat smells like dirty fridge. All waitresses messed up everything. Peoole, avoid this place. Not worth it speading your time and money.

Arthur Rosenberg

Excellent soup. Nice atmosphere upstairs

Courtney Kim

The waitress forgot my order and she didn't know before I asked it. I ordered a medium well steak sandwich($21) but I got a well-done steak($35) with no buns. They gave me a glass of wine and a bowl of soup, but it was not enough to forget terrible horrible service.

Tami Baublitz

A go to for us! The best French onion soup! Be sure to tell the Hostess you want to sit down stairs as upstairs has little ambiance. 4 stars as this is ALWAYS the case.

Amelia Lobo

I've been going to La Boone Soup for almost 20 years. Prices have gone up a little but not much. They make great fondue and the salad is great. I love the prix fixe.

Ana West

The food and service is always good! Highly recommend the onion soup!

J Short

One of the best French Onion soups you can find. Everything else is I’ve tried has been delicious. This isn’t fancy, but welcoming and warm. A perfect place for a low key and tasty meal. They also have a good options for children.

Richard Pia

One of my NYC favorites. I’ve been coming here since high school (more than 40 years). Always a pleasure. Ask to sit outside when the weather is right.

Mr T

We will go back. The Prix fixe menu was well worth it and the service is no nonsense

Paola Moreno

Very good prices taking into account the area. Good food.

Lukas Herbert

If you want to experience a restaurant where your table is ready 15 minutes after your reservation time, and then, after you settle in and start ordering your drinks you are told they don't have half of the menu available, then this is the restaurant for you. As for us, we abruptly left. We don't have that kind of time on our hands to pay $16 for a kids meal once we are told the other choices we convinced our 7 year old to try weren't available. A simple sign out front, or a straightforward explanation while we waited for our reservation would have been appreciated. No such luck. We went home for dinner.

Jauffret Solignac

Excellent French restaurant! The fondue was delicious! The lamb chops melting! True French flavors. And I'm French so...

Lana Smith

Food was good. We were assuming they were open until 1130 per the Google guide but they actually close at 1030. So it was a bit rushed.

Lucy Robins

Did not have a reservation and it took a while to be seated, (especially when we had one more guest than we expected)! Very busy place, even at midafternoon on a Saturday. But once we were seated, the service was very good, the food was delicious, and the atmosphere was very French!

Stephanie Guarino

The Cream Spinach and Mushroom Omelet is exceptional! Wonderful and filling late lunch!

Joshua Brandenburg

Intimate two level space focusing of soups and fondue. The French soup is rightfully the star of the show. Very cute and very close to MoMa and Central Park.

Gal Sivan

Decent and quaint french bistro with simple food and quick service. I loved the second floor which was quiet and had a view to a patio with a table. I'm assuming this patio is open in warmer weather. I had the tomato soup which was excellent, creamy yet vegan. Prices were reasonable, and the place really reminded me of typical NY french bistros.

Hanna N

This place brings back fond memories! I used to go here all the time, and always had a good time!

Jonathan Palmer-Hoffman

I’ve been dining here for years, it’s a tradition! They were closed several years ago due to a fire and I was at my wit’s end, waiting for them to reopen. Sometimes you have to wait for a table, sometimes the servers are brusque. It doesn’t matter, because this place has impeccable charm, the prices are reasonable and the food is delicious. I particularly enjoy the parsnip soup!

Ginés Hidalgo Martínez

Good quality and excellent price vs. quality trade off.

kelvin tsang

Food is pretty authentic French. Although the new york strip was small for $39 and the au poive was inconsistent and weak second time around where are the peppercorns? Hostess takes no s__t.

Jean Gazis

The onion soup speaks for itself!

Ray Gosnell

food is always very good. the wait staff is friendly, helpful and make everyone welcome.

Edward Nelson

I loved this wonderful eatery! The food is terrific and the price is right.

West Cuisine Restaurant

Very Romantic

Mary-Elizabeth Kilkenny

Excellent! Never disappoints! Authentic French country cuisine! Reasonably priced for NYC. Love their Cheese Fondue. Worth the visit.

Becky Rose

A fantastic restaurant that's been a favorite of mine for over 25 years. Best soup and burgers in NYC.

Astrid Lamas

Cozy and peaceful atmosphere. Perfect for a date or family dinner. Solid French menu. Can’t go wrong with the soups a l’oignon

Ryan Morimoto

Cute French restaurant with delicious soups and monsieur croquettes!

Andy F

Great for lunch but not for dinner.

Dorrie Mercurio

This restaurant came highly recommend and completely exceeded expectations! The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming, the food (while out of my usual comfort zone) was absolutely delicious and the atmosphere was clean and cozy. The portions were perfectly sized. The staff was extremely apologetic for what they kept saying was a long wait for our food (we didn't think it was anything out of the ordinary) because of a large party upstairs. They offered each member of our party desert on the house! Unnecessary, but very much appreciated! We will definitely be going back!

Sophie Raven

Very good lamb burger. The service could be a little friendlier though.

Thomas Berta

Not expensive, but not the bargain it once was.

Lenore Jean Jones

It had been a long, long time since I had been to La Bonne Soupe, but it was just as good as I remembered! Great service, great food. Various of us had soups, crepes, quiche, and steak, and everyone was happy. One member of the party was in a scooter, but could walk the two steps down into the restaurant, and they gave us the table nearest the door, and found a safe place for the scooter. That might not work at a busier time. We were also a party of seven, but they coped beautifully. I'm happy we went!

R Holt

Quiche Lorraine, there specialty came out with a cold center, as if it had been heated in a microwave. The accompanying salad was just mixed greens, no veggies. My daughter ordered a nutella crepe and something with veggie and cheese was served to her. We sent it back and they served her 5 min later. Ok Cobb salad. My son liked his burger.

Alina Rozental

25 for soup, salad, bread, drink (including their nice french sodas) and desert. Everything was absolutely devine, especially their housemate chocolate mousse which was absolutely incredible (and I have tried my fair share of chocolate mousse). Only thing I would recommend to the owners is to upgrade their salad and bread to match the quality of the other parts of the meal, cause they were a bit underwhelming.

Daniel Strigenz

We were told by one hostess we could be seated in 5-10 minutes. She even had a table allocated for us that was being vacated by some other patrons. After waiting for awhile, we inquired with the other host, who rudely told us that we would not be seated. Would not have been a big deal had we been told this up front but it was very rude to keep us waiting like they did. Clearly the staff does not communicate well. Have been here many times before when I used to live in the city but will not be returning.

Nate Grove

Very cute little French restaurant with great soups and light French fare. Not very expensive for French food.

Greg Thorson

Doesn't have the spartan decor anymore. French opinion soup is the best I've ever had, worth the uptick on the scale tomorrow morning.

gabi marchion

Extremely yummy. I will say though that the French Onion had a bit too much cheese for my liking. There was definitely more cheese than onions in my soup but the little onions I did get were absolutely delicious as was the broth. I got the special tart (tomato and goat cheese) and it was fresh and delicious. I’ll come back again but I’ll probably order a different soup!

Karen A Watson-Sooy

I love it there. The food is delicious. I stopped there with a friend and we both had the soup special, which is salad, bread, soup, a glass of red or white wine, and a dessert. It was all delicious and tasted homemade.

Alex Ravenel

Good low key French bistro in a cozy space. Reasonably priced too.

Daphney Boutin

Small French bistro feel in midtown. Amazing staff and equally delicious food.

Kathleen Dunn

Love the bread, wine, traditional onion soupe, and the ambiance. Good value, too.

James Knisely

Very good soup, people were nice and prices were affordable

Silvia Zonana

Great onion soup t

Al McCullough

It was a snowy day in New York. Central Park was beautiful with it's snow-covered trees. But with the snow comes a chill. My wife wanted soup - specifically French onion. A quick Google search turned up a few places, but with a name like La Bonne Soupe, how could we Not go here for French onion. And boy were we glad we did - it was so tasty and exactly what my wife wanted...which led to me getting what I wanted later that night

Faith Brown

Nice place, not too expensive, and very tasty food. I loved the wine.

Stephen Rye

Good was fantastic. The waitress.was great and the prices were very reasonable.

Lisa Philpott

Very cute French restaurant with a great French onion soup and Monsour Croquette.

Jacqueline Winter

Great friendly belgian delishous food

Michael Janczecki

Fantastic rustic and relaxed midtown bistro. Always the "go to" place for me for reasonably-priced and authentic unpretentious French fare when visiting NYC several times a year up from Ft. Lauderdale.

Joseph NewYork

VG Burger Maison. Big & juicy with a great wine & mushroom sauce.

Alexis Theroux

Delicious food and a cute interior. Nice place!

Milagros B

It's a small restaurant with a very nice decoration that resembles to France. Tables are most of them set for 2, so when a bigger group comes in you may be asked to move a table so they can put it together. As it has few tables I felt kind of rushed while eating and ordering. The waiter seemed to be overwhelmed or distracted as he came back, after taking our orders, to ask us again what we have ordered, even though he was taking notes the first time; later on he forgot to bring the beer we ordered and we had to request it again to another waitress who seemed to be the manager of the salon. I had an omelette and my partner had a crepe, the food was very good and it was served pretty fast. The reason for the 2 stars is mainly the disrespectful and poor service I received tonight. The waiter was unhappy with the tip we left, and started saying names to us while we were still there, after doing that, he came back and took the glass of water off my hand just when I was about to take a sip. We approached the salon's manager to make a note on this disrespectful attitude, but she justified the waiter and was even more aggressive to us. She finally said she would take our comment into consideration and talk to the waiter but she never apologized or seemed to be concerned about it. I would definitely not recommend this place and I will certainly not return.

Lola Rainy

This place it's truly a hidden gem. The atmosphere is great, totally relaxed, goes with the decor. The staff is friendly and attentive. Now the food: what a delicious onion soup! OMG, hands down the best I've had. The Quiche Lorraine was good and liked the greens the serve it with. Highly recommend it.

Lynn Biondi

Great pre-theater spot for a light meal. A prix-fixe offering includes choice of soup, house salad, house dessert and a glass of wine or beer.

Thomas G. Steffens

Simply the best Fondue. As good as Paris. And crêpes A.S. well! Nice ambiance. Relaxing. No fancy shamcy stuff.

Silvina Alejandra Nuñez

We had an exquisite dinner, but the attention was very bad. We were reminded a few times that the restaurant was about to close and our plates were picked up though we hadn't finished dining. Same thing with several tables

esther g.

Excellent choice. Great onion soup and salads..

Parveen Singh

Waiter with the mustache rushed us, food was decent but service was awful.

Vonalis Pina

La Bonne Soupe is a holiday tradition for my son and I. We come every year after our holiday Broadway show and allow ourselves to be transported to another place (Paris) and another time. As we settle into the warmth of this cozy nook, we let the aroma and flavor of our onion soupe revive us. Preferring the succulent burgers and frites, my son smiles happily, bite after flavorful bite. As we anxiously await our fondue de chocolate, we smile, grateful that La Bonne Soupe is there to remind us that life, made up of simple pleasures, becomes more enjoyable when making connections with strangers over our many commonalities.

Dallin Dressman

The French onion soup is to die for. We went here before a Broadway show and they were quick so that we would be able to make it on time. Great service!

Elizabeth Knorr

Everything was wonderful, as it always is. The mussels were divine, and so were the fries that go with them. We did the prix fixe and had both appetizers, the chicken and the tuna, and both desserts. We also had a lovely bottle of pinot noir. Everything was on point, and the service was impecable. Can't wait for my next visit!

Kevin Kong

Steak hache was great but their fries were the most memorable in my opinion. It’s been almost a week since we went but I can still remember how crispy they were! The crepe lasagne was an interesting French twist and worth trying.

Marie-Cecile Chalbot

I came with my parents while touring midtown. They had the quiche that was excellent. I had the croque-monsieur that was pretty tasty, served with a gratin bechamel sauce. All these dishes were served we with green salad and homemade vinaigrette. We all appreciated the service. The downside is the back room that is not very welcoming and should be more decorated. Waiter was very polite and helpful.

W L

Food exquisite. Love the frites, which are skinny and crispy. Ambience with dim lighting and background music romantic. Service attentive.

Jason Lampert

Consistently delicous and affordable. Best value is the prix fix. Excellent french onion soup.

Anna Morton

I've worked in midtown for a few years now and this is my favorite place to eat in the entire city. Lovely staff, you can have a quick lunch or dinner before a show, or you can linger. The croque monsieur is my favorite. And they have perfect shoe string fries. Also, the chocolate mousse is so good.

Bob Spaziano

Excellent, well priced, French Restaurant. We try to come here every time we come to NYC. Great service, great food, great wine.

Antonio Panaccione

It's a nice place to eat around Midtown, but not tooooo expensive considering the location.

Mickey Bennet

La Bonne Soupe is an understatement. This place is wonderful. I had the French Onion soup and it really hit the spot. The atmosphere is fantastic and I will certainly be going much more often now that I have found this place.

Matias Moreno

Great food and friendly service. Prix Fixe is a good option or try the fondue

Joseph Dutko

Lives up to it's name 'good soups', while visiting NYC, we found this quaint little French Bistro on W 55th Street, to enjoy our lunch. Its ambiance starts at the front of the building and continues throughout and while it is a smaller establishment with seating on two floors, it is intimate and cozy. I would have to recommend their special 'French Onion soup, salad, dessert and glass of house wine (red or white), your taste buds will thank you, it is delicious a meal, that you won't soon forget. Next time we're in NYC we'll certainly stop here again, we enjoyed it that much.
