This Restaurant belongs to the category of French restaurant.
Great food selection, YUMMY, they have liquor, espresso, annnd high-chairs. Love!
The wait service was mediocre and all of my party's food was underwhelming
One of my favorite spots in the UWS, not only because it is just a minute from my apartment ;) The restaurant is open 24\7, which is good if you want good food in the middle of the night, and not just pizza or junk food. The atmosphere is great! Dim light, great background music (!) and quiet enough to have a conversation without yelling. The food is great, not the cheapest, but worth the money.
I like French Roast. Pleasant servers; interesting, uncomplicated menu with nicely prepared food; unpretentious surroundings; it's excellent for lunch.
Good breakfast. Outside seating. Service was spotty. Food is respectible, not memorable. Good coffee
This is a very popular place with good food but it can be very noisy
Admittedly, I only had coffee but it tasted like any diner in the city. Disappointing $4 purchase.
A pleasant place to have a croissant and a cappuccino. Good service and high quality food. Tables are very close if you want a private conversation.
The food was overcooked and lackluster, and the staff were inattentive and apathetic. Not worth the cost. Not worth the time.
Good food selections. Friendly staff. Ate there with friends while visiting the old neighborhood. Will definitely go again on my next NY visit.
Had dinner there with my dad. He ordered liver!
The food was delicious, but pricey.
Great menu! The best french toast and Mac n' Cheese!
Burger was overcooked, fries were good though. I also had an iced coffee, which was ok but was $4.50 for maybe 12 oz(?). Servers were nice Not really worth the price overall.
A quick stop for my dog and I on a muggy day. Service was excellent, they even provided a fish and water for the pup! We sat outside. Coffee was perfection, strong, fresh and flavorful. Banana crunch muffin was a delight, toasted and fresh butter provided. C'est Magnifique!
Fried. Cheese. Great wine! Delicious desserts. And - FRIED. CHEESE.
A fav location for delicious French food. Prices are decent for the quality.
Food was amazing and service was great always a joy to eat here
I've gone there for very long time never getting a seat had a problem with that breakfast is amazing good ambience
Went there after a show in the theater district. They were open late which was nice. The food was great. Had the shepherds pie delicious, and my fiancé had the braised short ribs. French Onion soup was the best I have had in a while and the stinky mac and chees was also delicious. Service was good waiter could have been a little more attentive it was not busy at all that night. Maitre d was very nice since they did not have any Sambuca he offered me a Hennessy on the house and my fiancé a free Vodka latte. Very cosy atmosphere would definitely go back. Wish they had a soufflé for dessert though lol.
Went for a quick bite to eat. Food was good, the place was comfortable.
Bone appetite. Awesome union soup and salmon
Super friendly welcoming staff, wonderful food. Super!
Hip place good service good food reasonable price for location/kind of restaurant
Best food Great atmosphere and Kind people Deadly combination a Heaven in this concrete jungle
Highly recommend the Coq au Vin. Sadly served only on Wednesday due to a special menu
While brunch is always a good time to come to Empire, we like to wrap up date nights here with a nice cup of coffee or tea and a decadent slice of cake. The people watching is always good, too. If there's one place that makes me wish that we lived inside the loop so we could visit every day, this is it.
This is a great Neighborhood Restaurant and Upper Manhattan the atmosphere was excellent it was small and intimate the food was superb. Our waitress was very attentive very funny really like her with definitely here again.
The eggs Benedict is the best thing I've had
Diner-like French restaurant. The food was pretty great and the late-night service was also on point
Very cozy, I had a oatmeal which wasn’t bad nor good. I recommend you not to get the oatmeal. Waiters real nice.
I really love their dishes. I always get excellent customer service there. The place is well organised and the workers are always friendly. Highly recommended.
I enjoyed this place when it was downtown on Sixth Ave. Always a good spot to stop for breakfast lunch and drinks, now the weather is getting better the outside seating is welcome on this sunny corner
Slow service for average tasting food. Portions are small.
Came here a couple of times, and found hair in my food every single time. My friend and I ordered the same dish, and one of them had noticeably very poor quantity/quality of fruits. We called the waitress to ask why the two dishes were so different, and she replied by saying they were the same. I wasn't very happy about it, so didn't leave too much tip. The waitress ran after me and asked for more. Never going back.
Double espresso was good despite the huge cup.
IT' okey not Good not bad
Not a bad place for a quick bite. The burger was good as was the success wife's chicken dinner. Good, nothing spectacular
Service was awful and the wait for our food was forever
Great place. The roasted cage free chicken was amazing.
Absolutely EXCELLENT Loved i
I was here two times this weekend, Friday I enjoyed the grilled octopus appetizer. It was so good I remembered when I was on the UWS on Sunday, redux.
Food is always good
Good coffee. Decent breakfast sandwich. Loud and a bit crowded, but the service was very friendly.
Ok service. Food was adequate
Used to be one of my favorite places to dine for years before 2011. The location is great, and the staffs are very friendly. If you’re desperate for food, this is a convenient spot to go to since it’s open 24/7. However, the menu seems different from my memory back in the late 2000. The price has gone much higher especially. The steak I used to get all the time now costs $10 more. Both my daughter and my food tasted alright. Before we went out, I saw a roach on the corner next to the bar. I quietly informed our waiter and he quickly eliminated that creature before disturbing other guests. (I understand how difficult it is to keep bugs away from the restaurant, and that was why I didn’t go with a public announcement...) Anyways, our last visit didn’t bring back my good old memory, and that probably would be our last visit.
Food is not great not bad. Service is quirky to put it nicely. I’ve been scolded for bringing my own disposable cup of coffee there with another brand name, told that I must read myself of the offense of paper cup. On another visit there, after being shown to my seat I was stuck standing in the aisle while three servers walked by all blocking the path to my seat. I looked over at the man who appeared to be the manager, and he was watching the whole thing and his expression did not change. It would appear that there is no training in customer service basics.
Brunch was not so great. Have always had wonderful experiences here. No need for details.
One of our absolute favorite late-night spots in NYC!
Very good food, steak frites is my personal favorite. Authentic French food, not cheap but worth it.
I got the roasted chicken dinner which included mashed potatoes and spinach and garlic cloves. It was great. I loved it, I felt so great afterwards. I love it here. We've walked past it so many times and we finally decided to try this place and couldn't be more pleased!
Good local vibe
french food, so delicious. Arrived at seven, it wasn't crowded. It has a good atmosphere.
The fried calamari was pretty good, the steak was decent. I asked for well done, but it was uncooked as there were definitely some rare pieces. The waiters were nice and friendly.
I love their coffee, breakfasts, dessert, everything there. Good service. But I went yesterday at 12:30am ad they were closed! They suppose to close at 2:00am. It's not a big deal, but if you close at midnight don't post you close at 2:00am!. I recommend this place, but first call and be sure they are open so you won't waste your time driving there.
Decent food with mediocre service. A good place to have breakfast before visiting the museum for people that are visiting.
It’s open almost all night which is nice. But the menu is really really limited and the food is average. Nice space and Friendly staff but do not except any culinary delight. It’s open on all holidays which is helpful they just need to revamp the dinner menu. Brunch is almost decent
The manager is no polite and arrogant
Basic sort of French Cafe
Food was very bland and cold. Extremely disappointing!
Good food , great service ,very attentive and fun atmosphere. A very French cafe bistro feel !
Was always one of my favorite late night spots to visit when living in the area. Great wine selection and escargot
Good coffee
Steak was over cooked. Frites were many different degrees of cooked: some soggy and undercooked, some burned to a crisp.
Not authentic French restaurant. Their $17 salmon hash is basically salmon and canned vegetables. The croque was made with some awful Wonder Bread.
My favorite local go to place for good food and drink at any time of the day.
French Roast is a great 24 hour restaurant to stop by any time, especially late night. Service is generally good, and there's a slightly upscale vibe (compared to a diner), which is typically refreshing. The cocktails and wine list are good, and the burgers are great, and the menu has a lot of different offerings, from light fare and beyond.
Best brunch on the UWS.
They serve big dishes and for fair rates. friendly staff. Great work.
Great service
Tables too close together, too loud. Food ok, not great
Usually I'm not one to write reviews but hopefully it will help the staff and management improve on customer care. I live in the neighborhood and always wanted to try the food. After a long day of work on Tuesday I stopped in around 12:45 am for a quick bite and the bartender took great care of me. The penne and french toast are amazing. It was so good I came back last night after a long day of work to have the same again. Around 1:15 am I stepped not even half my foot in the door and a tall man blurted "We're closed for the night." There was no greeting, no hi, hello, glad to have you...nothing. I understand the kitchen may have been closed but on the site it says closing is 4:00 am. He was so cold, rude and quick with his words I couldn't say anything but turn and walk out. I would love to give more stars. The three are for the lovely bartender and great food I received on Tuesday.
It was nice place, the service was good and they don't give you a time limit for how long you should stay
I've always been a fan of the location in the Vill, and this spot on the Upper West Side, while different has a lot in common with it. In a real good way. First off, it's tucked into a nice little corner of Broadway. It adds to the warm and dulcet environment you walk into. I've done most of my hangout time at the bar here, which makes for great conversations to be had. And if you happen to get here on a late night, it's a patently more peaceful vibe than in the day hours. As far as food, you can't go wrong with that onion soup. It's not exactly what you could get in a Parisian cafe, the naysayers would suggest. But it's close, and for the price really good. Their breakfast items like the French toast sing to you as you eat. And the drinks? The bartenders here make it a point to ask you what you like, and you'll find yourself sipping a great cocktail while having a good conversation. All in all, this French Roast is continental cuisine with flair and class.
So I happened to be around the area waiting for some friends to go to the movies and I stumbled upon this gem for a quick brunch. I am beyond happy to have had extra time to myself because the food was amazing! I had a Croissant Sandwich which contained smoked bacon with scrambled eggs and gruyere cheese accompanied with a Frisee salad, beyond amazing!! I couldn’t resist and decided to order the Apple Pie Sundae along with a Cappuccino and ever so glad I did it was the perfect ending to my spontaneous solo date.
Looking for a place to eat on Christmas day and came across this gem. Nice atmosphere, great service and excellent food. Had eggs Benedict and pancakes. Highly recommended this place.
Good solid reasonably priced food. I had the cassoulet and brought home some for tonight
Perfect spot to read and relax!
Quaint little cafe. A bit of a wait for food, but food was good.
If you want a touch of France look no further. I had a croque madame - toasted bread with cheese and ham, fried cheese on top, fried egg on top that- it was delicious as was EVERYTHING else. Great creative bloody Mary. Place is pricey but worth it. Highly recommend
Would absolutely recommend visiting this place. Awesome ambience, delicious dishes, fantastic customer service. They never disappoint.
Decent but unexceptional food, though some of the dishes brought to other tables looked better than what we ordered. For example, our onion soup had insufficient cheese and was too salty but the shakshuka at the next table looked delicious. Extra charge for bread at brunch, which is ridiculous.
Congenial neighborhood bistro with mostly good food and pleasant but erratic young staff. Deafening when full. Huge omelets, good salads, great fries, yummy bread, often disappointing desserts.
Lender's bagels on the 16 dollar lox plate. We are on the upper west side of Manhattan. I love FR but damn! It needs to be BYOBagel.
The food was mediocre and the service was worse. As a tea drinker I found it extremely frustrating that there were multiple teas listed on the menu but they were out of all but one at 10 am. I would not go back there again.
I love this place. Been going there for decades. Still great food, good service and views. I think they are still open very late or 24/7.
Love the restaurant but the manager was rude and definitely not children friendly.
It’s a nice, albeit small, cafe with a tasty food selection. Only qualm with the restaurant is the servers ask if you would like still water or sparkling water without informing you that they charge for sparkling water. Typically if you’re given the option between still or sparkling, there’s no charge for either.
Cozy place! Delicious food!
Really good late-night (or rather, ALL-night) bistro. I have been eating here for about ten years. The food has always been good, not amazing, but a very reliable choice. I went last night, after not having been for a month or two, and the menu was updated! Lots of new dishes or re-conceived dishes that taste really good. I highly recommend the fried calamari, macaroni and cheese (very creamy w/ gruyere) and the French Roast burger. Do not dine here if you are in a rush. The service is always pretty slow. I've never had a problem getting a seat, but I have walked by at times and have noticed a wait- brunch time and lunch on the weekends.
I live in the neighborhood and have been coming to the French Roast for years. The food has always been consistently good. For the past few years some friends and I meet and eat at the bar and our main draw there is STAN the bartender. We come now when he is on duty. He never forgets our names - or what we drink- and is the ultmate professional and an absolute pleasure to talk to. In an era when service staff come and go- it is great to have a constant in someone like Stan who for us, is one of the main reasons we go to The French Roast. Stan makes it a home for us
Best pancakes ever! Perfect for Christmas Morning!
Great food and staff
We came for an early dinner and decided to wait 30 minutes so we could order from the dinner menu (starts at 5pm) instead of the brunch menu. Around 5:45 pm the hostess came along (in the middle of our meal) and informed us they needed our table at 6pm to seat another party of 5. Extremely rude. The manager wasn't helpful either, only stating that if he knew we were going to take so long he would seat us elsewhere. So terrible customer service trickles from the top down. There are so many dining options in NYC that one is better off going to another restaurant that has better customer service.
This restaurant used to be one of our go to places in the neighborhood and definitely always thought of it as child friendly. When we attempted to dine here with our daughter last night, we were unfortunately met with a manager who was clearly not open to accommodating our need to keep our sleeping infant daughter in her stroller and also suggested an unsafe modification with the rocker seat just to not have the stroller in the restaurant. When I mentioned that we could sit outside as I saw another stroller already on the patio area, he replied that there were other patrons who wanted the outdoor tables. We did not endeavor to try to stay nor will we return to the restaurant again. While I can appreciate that not every establishment can accommodate having a stroller on premise, I would hope that when delivering that message to a potential patron, explain so without apprehension or negativity.
Food is ok- nothing spectacular for the clst. Service is always pretty poor (slightly wrong things come, food takes ages to come and is usually bit cold, in every seat you're bumped by servers)
Delicious coffee and very good tea and food. I had the Mexican omelette, which came with potatoes and a salad, the potatoes were good and the salad was decent if boring. Good service, if not super friendly.
I love going here for coffee of course and their big ole burger, which I get with cheddar cheese with a side of fries. It's one of my favorite places uptown to get my burger on. It's big and juicy every time. This is also a great spot to chill with a friend with a glass of wine or coffee. A nice atmosphere with a french feel.
The taste
Great food, service and the manager Sam is great!
Great food. Accommodating to GF . Friendly service.
The French toast was delicious and the staff was very nice and helpful.
Ordered the salmon bagel, and I wasn't expecting it to be served deconstructed! Not complaining though! Not everybody likes pickles, olives or capers... ;) The amount of salmon on the plate was more than generous, and the staff was great. We went for brunch after a run on Central Park and I couldn't have been happier!
The French Roast Burger was the ultimate breakfast burger! Well worth it. Please add WiFi.
I've had both breakfast and lunch here. Breakfast is very good with a nice selection of entrées. I've had the burger for lunch twice. It's an excellent burger. Coffee is top notch and the service is friendly and quick. However, the noise level can make it difficult to hold a conversation.
Good spot, need to go there more often
Tasty and good service – on the pricey side tho, worth a bit less than it costs.
My standard for decent French fare and conversation with UWS locals
Real good. A bit on the pricey side for what is being served though.
Just wondering: are you guys still serving rancid chicken here?
While a bit pricey, this place was very good. Priceyness is to be expected for New York. The waitress was friendly and the food came out quickly. Neither of us ordered drinks, and the water is given in a big bottle thing so you can just refill your own which is nice. Waitress was very helpful answering questions. I had the Mexican omelette which was super tasty and the fruit was very fresh.
This is a good place. Excellent and *intelligent* service, meaning that the hosts and hostesses were attentive but not over-bearing and interfering, something that has become too hard to find. The food was, somehow, less than stellar, but may be it was just this night. The tuna in the nicoise was extra-ordinary but the steak in the hanger did not leave much of a memory. The creme brulee though, made up for all shortcomings!
Already a good choice
Great food. Friendly service.
Great place to sit outside when weather is good, I ate the salmon and it was just delicious (although not very big)
Nice atmosphere, Cesar salad was a bit soggy, but otherwise tasty.
Steak and eggs blew my mind. Duck hash was also on point. Great, quiet street for an awesome breakfast. Sit outside if the weather warrants.
It was a great surprise. We enjoyed both excellent service and a delightful lunch. (Baked goods we're notably great). Thanks!
French Roast is the quintessential parisienne bistro in NYC. The menu changes seasonally but it always offers great dishes to choose from. Besides having a great menu I love their strategic corner location, outside seating and decor in general. The dimly lit restaurant offers the perfect nightcap to any evening. I tried my very first french escargots here. I would also recommend their Croque Monsieur.
As a regular customer I was disappointed with the experience today. A server who took 4 attempts to get the order and part of it still came out incorrect. Manager didn’t seem to care, saying only he didn’t know what happened. No apologies and lacking basic customer service. I’ll maintain the 4* and give the benefit of the doubt. But unless you say something nothing changes. Get back on your game French Toast.
Great food. very nice selection for breakfast and lunch. Good service
French roast is amazing. Great food and drinks, lovely atmosphere, very inclusive of all.
Great service, good food and coffee.
Nice neighborhood place. Cozy atmosphere. Good brunch menu
Reliable, local Neighborhood Place service Fair
Best cassoulet! Excellent Manhattan's too. Great after theater spot.
Easily one of the most consistent bistro style restaurants in NYC. Their liver is amazing so even if you think you hate it, give it one more try. The staff is great and doesn't hover to make you feel like you've stayed too long and it's a great atmosphere for either a first date or just meeting with friends.
My omelette was raw. I sent it back. Good service for a Sunday brunch.
Had an amazing time here. Lovely spot. Great menu and awesome service! Truly a gem.
I didn't like the French fries, they weren't cooked enough but my other friends liked the onion soup and kale and beet salad they ordered. The service and vibe were good. The prices were fair. We will probably visit again.
Awesome breakfast!
Very good.
24 hour spot in the upper west side with generous portions and good food.
Asked for a candle on my cake because it was my wedding anniversary but guess what! I gt no candles. Serving without proper table manners. Very bad! We are not here to eat free food you know! Train your stupid staffs
French Roast is the reason for all diners to step up. The menu which changes seasonally, always offers great dishes to choose from. Besides having a great menu I love that it's open late at night. The dimly lit restaurant offers the perfect nightcap to any evening. Great place to visit.
Horrible restaurant in every possible way. Dirty, noisy, rude waiters, below mediocre food. HORRIBLE!
Great Neighborhood BIstro. They are open late and the food is good. Breakfast, Brunch, Dinner, late night menu, Bar. I'm a repeat offender
Awesome cap in a lovely atmosphere!
Warm and very cozy French Bistro with excellent food. I highly recommend the beef barley soup. Absolutely delicious. Their food presentation is very impressive and the menu is quite diverse. The customer service is excellent and the private bathrooms are also immaculate. Prices are very reasonable. The NY Strip Steak is probably the most expensive entree at approximately $35.
In response to Ms Stence’s review Upon investigating your conversation with me further you completely misheard or misunderstood the comment you assumed you heard. In fact the waitress you say made the comment is in fact a volunteer worker for the NYC Trans Community. I assure you French Roast has a zero tolerance policy regarding any sort of hate speech, towards anyone. As a gay man I have dealt with hatred my entire life ... hatred that a CIS, straight person will never know or understand. We at French Roast are a safe space for many ... employees and guests.... and your assumptions are completely unfounded and built upon a conversation that you completely misinterpreted. As for how a guest treated you I have no control over the general public. However when you infer that a business I run is homophobic or unkind I take great offense to that claim. And to bring it to a forum such as this is irresponsible and perpetuates hate speech even further.
Great roast chicken... lovely Thanksgiving dinner!!
Never a problem, keep it that way..
Best bacon,egg and cheese!
Went tonight and the food was good, and the waiter was nowhere to be found. I told him I'd had an issue with the chicken before and when I got the food he never checked on me. Then when I paid, he asked if I want change. YES!! Always bring my change. It's mine. The food is good to great here, but the service usually is poor. I spoke to the manager and he seemed uninterested and offered me nothing for my trouble. The disappearing waiter act is so lame. They should make sure the food is okay and return the change. Anything less is amateur night. Service is usually a killer here, despite the sometimes great food.
amazing food
We just popped in for dessert after movies and opted for cheese platter with baguette and fig preserve. Coffee and berries. It was just great. Truth is, I make better coffee than that but the food was good with even bread and cheese to make it worth the price tag. The fig preserve? I expected supermarket brand preserve but it totally exceeded my expectations! Chunks of chopped figs in rich sauce and a whole star anise. The waiter was very friendly and professional, like you'd expect in a casual French place. Since we looked at only the dessert menu, I can say they had a nice selection of desserts, coffees, aperitifs, cognac sand brandy, dessert wines
The best espresso martini in nyc.
Also excellent cappuccino and their hot oatmeal wins a medal on the coldest NYC morning.
Salad was good service was good also have been going for years
Great local restaurant and brunch spot! It's open 24 hours, which is a HUGE plus when you have people visiting and they are getting in early or late and you want to take them to a nice place to eat. Prices aren't cheap, but then again, what brunch place on the Upper West Side is? Good cocktails, fresh fruits, and a cooking staff that knows what it's doing. We're huge fans.
Good food but rather clumsy service
Okay maybe 5 stars is being generous but I really like this place. We always enjoy that there's just the right amount of lighting, that it's not too loud and you don't hear everyone else's conversation, that the service is always friendly and polite, drinks are good, food is tasty. I always get the escargot when here and then I go back forth as to what entree because I've tried most of them and they've all been enjoyable. We need to come here more often, it's always been consistently good.
Wonderful coffee !!! I love it very much ~
The food was delicious, the staff was really nice
Sunday morning, sat at a beautiful table outside. 5 minute wait for waiter. Ordered coffee and a sticky pecan bun. 6 minute wait for coffee. 15 min wait for the bun. Pastry is dry, with very little cinnamon or caramel, little bit of nuts. 10 minute wait for the check. No tip, not coming back. Half an hour of my life I'm never getting back.
Very polite staff. Food is not bad but not outstanding... We were desapointed to notice the coffee was not only overpriced (5$ slightly oversized mug) but not included with our breakfast
Nice lunch with a friend.
Great.
