REVIEWS OF Despaña IN New York

Kristen Welte

The food is amazing. The tapas style portions are great for a quick lunch and the sandwiches are the perfect size. The Vegetariano sandwich is so fresh and delicious, the bread was absolutely to die for. The croquettes were a great size to try more than one if you wanted. Definitely recommend here if you're looking for a quick and tasty lunch.

Martin Gohary

One of my favorites places to go when craving a meat and cheese platter in the city. Great section of wines and beers too!

John Wynn

Wow! So authentic and great!

Christian Avila

Great spot, great food, service is slow, so in all ways feels like Spain.

Sophy Lorraine Martorell

Quaint spot in soho with great small sandwiches and delicious cafe con leche. Perfect lunch spot and plenty of seating! Also very friendly and attentive service, I will definitely be frequenting this place.

Ana Sánchez Pérez

Great selection of Spanish foods. Makes me feel at home! Can't give 5 stars because pricing is a little bit high

Judy Almodovar

Chorizo and manchego sandwiches are a must try!

Jan-Ole Hesselberg

Charming place. Good tapas. Not great.

Mark Scopetta

Excellent Spanish food. The croquettes and sandwiches are excellent

Janet Allen

Changing up your lunch order usually means adding some greens to your rice bowl. Planning anything more adventurous would infringe on the time you usually devote to finding out which Parks And Rec character you are, so we did the work for you. Go to Despaña - a tapas bar in Soho with a giant menu. We like the chorizo cooked in apple cider and thin slices of octopus over mashed potatoes, but the best part of this traditional tapas spot is asking for samples of Spanish cheeses and cured meats while you wait for your meal.

Alina

Truly a gem! A friend of mine and I got a $20 bottle from Spain- super original I know. We got the Despaña sandwich which was delicious and one of the most popular in Spain -$10 & change. Will definitely come back and bring my boyfriend. He will love how the place is hidden and chill. Not too busy and a great space full of decorations of Spain and their authentic wines. You can come here for a light dinner and drink to catch up with a good old friend!

Martha Roberts

Serrano ham & octopus tapas are delicious! They just need more seating space.

Alexander Lozano

Amazing! A must visit!

Danielle Gregori

They had a huge selection of products from Spain, as well as delicious, delicious food you can order. I love this place!

Ehud Persitz

Excellent. Everything. Really.

lindsey utrata

The most incredible selection of foods and beverages (check out the wine store right next door) of Spanish foods I've seen outside of Spain!

Xavier HURAUX

The place is great, you can eat there as well as buy Spanish traditional food. It is a little expensive for Spanish food but knowing that we are in New York it is quite reasonable. And as for how it tastes, I must admit it is just amazing and my standards are pretty high being Spanish. I will recommend it to whom ever is looking for some Spanish food to buy

Tony Iannotti

Great sandwiches, and an amazing assortment of meats, cheeses, chocolates, and other treats.

Carl Zytowski

On my first visit Despaña certainly deserves a high rating. I arrived about 6 pm on a Friday and about half the seats were taken. The counter service was helpful and friendly, even offering a taste of any/all the wines by the glass (only 4) which of course are all Spanish wines. You can also purchase any bottle next door at their wine store to consume in here. The tapas we're really good. Certainly on par with what I've had in Spain. It's a broader selection than is typical in Spain for any one tapas bar but welcomed for it's diversity. I liked the Morcilla salchica/sausage and so did my 5 year old son who isn't always an adventurous eater.

Tara Ferrer

Delicious tapas in a back dining space, and great meats and cheeses in the grocery section.

Martin Fraga

Good quality ingredients. Not much to complain about, but didn't blow my mind.

Gabriel Wakim

You will definitely enjoy the food the products, it's clean cosy and friendly staff

manuel cabrero

Top quality food and products from Spain. Best Sangria ever.

Damaly Gonzalez

Excellent and delicious food for a very affordable price. The environment is very chill and an open space. Highly recommend!

Andrew Antuna

A delicious Spanish Cafe and Marketplace. Food enjoyed: Croqetas with Iberico Ham Manchego Cheese plate Morcia bocadillo Charcuterie Plate Also a great selection of Spanish mineral waters and snacks for purchase. If you're looking for a nice place for lunch on a Sunday afternoon, come on here. Friendly Staff!

Cody Nash

Delicious food and awesome people.

chris caracciolo

All things from Spain can be found here. Nice shop .you can get nice cheeses and salamis ,chorizo olive oil.. They make a bunch of sandwiches and snacks for you to enjoy as well .nice staff good service .nice spot to jump in when your in soho

Cristian Morón

good spanish quality for a reasonable price!

Jeff Santore

Excellent hidden Spanish grocery store, that also sells great tapas.

Jess Curl

Decent selection of tapas and Spanish treats, meats, cheeses, and beverages. Prices aren’t bad unless you’re comparing them to Spain’s prices... but it’s typical for New York. Service is fine, selection is limited but will bring you joy if you miss some of your Spanish brands. Lots of Spaniard expats here enjoying a bit of home when we were there (rainy Saturday afternoon). The papas bravas picantes, and the chocolate a la taza were yummy. Nice spot to sit in the back.

Sue Harrington

The chorizo sandwich we had was very tasty. Only problem we found was that the chorizo itself had some hard pieces in it which made it unappetizing.

Claudio Fabbri

I love the tapas here, and they are very inexpensive compared to other places in NY.

annaliese marques

Authentic! It tasted delicious! I recommend!

Izzy Romero

Great place with great food. A bit expensive (and I know why it is, but I still think they went a bit too far up marking their prices). Love their food though.

Amelia Cassiraghi

Amazing spot! I first thought that is was a "grab & go" place but they had tables to sit. Amazing spread. The tapas and pinchos were awesome, as same as their meat and cheese platter. Brought my friend from Barcelona and she was super impressed also. Plus they are mostly Spanish speakers so thst was awesome. They sell beer and wine also when you sit. Overall awesome place and will def go again

Miriam E

Excellent food!!!

Patrick Sullivan

Spanish wines are typically poorly represented in neighborhood wine stores. Go to Despaña for knowledgeable staff and big selection.

nycguy9999

Omg they had the freshest sardines

M Zechowski

Thank you for preparing a perfect paella for my husband's birthday. It brought us right back to our beloved holidays in Spain.

Michael Lee

Amazing spot for high quality Spanish food items. Deli inside serves delectable sandwiches and tapas. Wine store next door is also excellent.

Rob Horan

Fantastic chorizo and morcilla. The bocadillos (sandwiches) are a bit expensive and not overstuffed, but the quality is excellent and they are packed with flavor. Prepare to WAIT AND WAIT AND WAIT BECAUSE THEY ARE SLOOOOOOOOOOOOW.

bjjonesadventure

A flavor explosion! The meats cannot be described by photos or words. Chocolate is also given free on the tables, so how can this place not be a 5 star!?!

Ben Williams

Don't be fooled by the now obligatory 'craft beer' sign out the front. They have a few Spanish local brews, including Alhambra. Food looked lovely and the shelves were lined with interesting ingredients, but a craft beer outlet, this is not!

Mike Lin

My go to sandwich shop. Not as great as the tapas joints you'll find in Spain, but pretty good for what I've seen in NYC. Sample sausages by the door are a nice distraction while you're waiting for your order. You will definitely wait for your order.

Natalia Medina

Exceeded expectations. A piece of Spain in the middle of New York

Jenny Welsh

Very good customer service!!

PAUL BURNS

What's to say? Acorn fed Iberian hogs, silky results. Expertly shaved melt in the mouth ham. Excellent Spanish foods not from the pig- if you must.

Alan Jasie

Wonderful Spanish market and tapas bars.

Maria Melo

Awesome everything is delicious iwil recommend this place to everyone i see in and around my life.

Dhruv Shankar

Great sandwiches and a respectable cheese selection

Derek Miles

Everything you will need to cook awesome Spanish food at home. Also killer tapas and sandwiches to eat for lunch.

Zoe Bresnick

Great Spanish grocery store and secret tapas restaurant! Prices are very good and the tapas are delicious. I have been coming here for years.

Matt Paiton

Hidden gem of a sandwich joint - often drop in for lunch and never been disappointed. Head back in the evening for a cheeky glass of wine or Spanish beers.

Alex Ross

Incomparably delicious bocadillos and a convenient spot for Spanish specialty and deli shopping

Bess Fung

a hidden gem found wilde on food crawl. a wine store in the front with a small dining area around the back. you can order tapas or meat and cheese boards. everything was fairly inexpensive. food and service were good. will definitely come back.

ken do

Walk in... Find a seat.... Order at the counter... go with the iberico ham platter, anything anchovies and THE SQUID INK PASTA!! its the

Daniel Gomez

I like to go to Despana. I am some one of a Romantic person. I find the cheese selection very authentic. I took one star because the prices in some items have increased. Check the back little tapas counter. Next door the wines are also worth to explore.

Sara Kaplan

Spanish grocery store with a hidden cafe/tapas restaurant inside. It’s great, with wonderful tapas!

Sauvi Chick

I went there for a 2 hour wine tasting special event. Wines from the northern part of Spain were presented. We were informed about the region, the grapes, soil, vineyard, pictures etc. There were 4 red and 2 white. Tapas were also included. The presenter lives in Spain, is in the wine industry and is the daughter of a former Napa Valley vineyard owner.

Will Zesiger

The picante sandwich is incredible. One of the best places to grab a bite in NYC

Darren Himebrook

This cheese :) also everything about his place is awesome. Enjoy!

Francisco Serrano

By far the best Spanish restaurant you can find in the area. I wide selection of unique, original Spanish tapas, pinxtos and so much more. You can even buy authentic imported Spanish food to take home.

Paul Cheong

It's very expensive but my Spanish coworker suggested that I get my jamon here and all my friends confirmed that it is indeed very good. Go for all your Spanish groceries.

Alexier Soto-Carlo

Great authentic Spanish food, Tapas Café and they serve Wine and traditional Sangria.

Adrian Lesher

Comfortable white tile and marble cafe in back with beverages and tapas. Good Madrid-style hot chocolate.

Benjamin Berry

Great lunch spot!

Daniel Lau

What a delicious experience! It's small and it can be hard to miss with its own wine shop next door but this little grocery store/cafe is a perfect escape from New York . The Bocadillos were great, jamon fantastic, excellent chorizo and I'll definitely be back to try the pinxtos. Space is a little limited but that adds to the charm and you can buy pretty much all the things you eat on the menu to take home in the grocery store. My Spanish mate who came along with me said it met the standard. Knocking off a star or a half star if I could be Use the shrimp on the paella were a little over cooked.

Florin B.

Imitation spanish food manufactured in queens NY!! Well, most of it, check the label! I tried the boudin and it was so so. Will not go again, ever.

Fred Alluso

This the ultimate destination when shopping for tools or ingredients needed for making your favorite dishes from Spain. They stock a complete array of pottery and pans for stews and paella. Their shelves are lined with biscuits, preserves, chocolates, rice, jarred seafood, vinegars, oils and much more. They also have a deli counter where you can get freshly sliced ham, cheese and a variety of imported Spanish products. If you get hungry from all the shopping and sampling, then walk to the rear of the shop where you can get freshly made tapas and bocadillos with a cafe con leche or an imported beer. I really can’t say enough about the staff and how well they run this small but wonderful shop. Highly recommended.

j k

they sell iberico ham here... i think its spoiled...

Alondra Espino

This place definitely reminded me of when I was in Spain, from the people to the food to the music and the drinks. The food was delicious and the sangria was delightful. The place in inexpensive and cute. My friend went on a Thursday evening and it was not very crowded so we had a good time. The service was very friendly. Definitely ask for Martha as she was an awesome host!

Roshan Jhunja

Great sandwiches, uniquely fresh and flavorful. Helpful, friendly staff as well.

Andrew Cohen

My go-to spot for authentic spanish delicacies. Fresh, packaged and dine in options are all excellent. One of the few places to go to get the traditional spanish food items, great wine store next door too. Dine in options are all very very good.

Byron Sorrells

Great sandwiches. Great vibe. And they have Vichy Catalan

Jeremy Smith

Good stuff and Spanish imports. Clean place and friendly staff. The espresso was perfect too.

Lindsay Moore

Great gazpacho, not too crowded for lunch.

Dusan Jolovic

I had a Despana sandwich here and gazpacho and it was amazing. Love this little corner. Google does not even list it when you type 'food near me' I had to do manual search on the map. It is definitely worth stopping by.

Caroline Hudson

My favorite Spanish grocery store in NYC. It's not big but they have a lot of stuff at decent prices.

Ester Ward

Very nice Spanish grocery with a sit down section as well. Prices are quite good!

Phuong Q. Le

Good and cheap food, especially the blood sausage!

nia woods

Delicious food

Jason Devenny

Nice to have a place distributing Spanish products in NYC. However, their wines are overpriced and their pre-made food leaves a lot to be desired. Still not enough quality Spanish restaurateurs to set the standard for good Spanish food in New York. Maybe José Andrés will change this.

Chris Winger

Great place for Spanish produce, thry have a little cafe for Spanish home comforts too.

Veronica Borges

The croquetas de iberico, charcuterie and the squid ink paella were delicious. The tortilla and squid was ok. But the vibe in this place gives it 5 stars— it feels small, unpretentious and spanish. They sell delicious cheese, meats, canned fish, and other spanish food/ingredients. You can buy a bottle in their wine shop next door and bring it in for dinner.

Anna Simonse

Everyone's always so nice and I love the food. Love the small table area. Nice place to get away from Nolita/Soho crowds. Bonus for an awesome market.

Wontae Kim

Finally. Jamon Ibérico and bellota

Elayne Bryan

Had a wonderful time here. The food and coffee were delicious! Will definitely come again.

Alicia Rodriguez

Cute cafe/grocery selling very tasty and reasonably priced tapas.

Ashley Buchanan

Pricey for the serving size but the sandwiches are DELICIOUS!

Party Limo World

Awesome classic Spanish food!

Chris Acosta

If you're in the mood for real tapas and Iberian peninsula food products then this is the place since they are the purveyors/distributors of probably all the charcuterie and food products to probably every "tapas" or Iberian style restaurants in all of New York. The place it self is set up as a market where you can purchase everything from the olive oils, jamons, cheeses and especially prized canned foods such as baby eel etc, while also serving a mix of both cold and hot tapas as a "tasting" of their products. They also have a wine store next store with the finest selection of Spanish and regional wines of which you can bring over.

Caleb Radens

A small gem of a marketplace. The tapas are fantastic and the Spanish selection of cheese, meat, and goods are amazing! Highly recommend stopping by for a bite to eat and to get ingredients for your next paella or other Spanish-inspired dish.

Diana Bacchi

Great imported products from Spain

Keith Kilmer

Fantastico! Great little tapas bar. Good glass of wine. Comfortable space in back to eat.

Kimberly Fisher

Hidden gem!

Jose Enrique Garcia

Spain in a store. It says it all. The food, the drinks, the people, the festive spirit... It has it all.

Patricia Herrera

Everything is fresh and delicious

iolofono arpa

Wow, this place is a hidden treasure! My coworker recommended this place so I ordered traditional Tortilla Bocadillo ($8.50), a sandwich with potato omelet inside. The portion is huge so I couldn't finish in one setting, and the bread had authentic homemade sourdough taste and texture. It was simply heaven. This place also sells homemade sausages, bread and olive oil and everything looked so delicious in the store/deli. I'll definitely come back when I have enough time for lunch break!

I was Batman

Nice Deli style sit down cafe imported foods from spain and coffee was great. Nice staff. Specialty deli. Cozy place now.

Betty

One star for having hand-carved jamon iberico, and one star for friendly staff. Their competence, however, leaves something to be desired. I called ahead on Thursday to ask for 1/4 lb of jamon iberico to be hand-sliced for pickup. When I got there, they did not have it ready and said they couldn't sell me what they had because it was too close to the bone, and to come back the next day when they start a new leg. I returned on Saturday, placed my order, and waited outside. When I went back in about 10 minutes later, I found out that they gave my order away to another customer. Get your s*** together, Despana.

Haejin Kim

my sort of cafe/pub love the vibe can get the best chocolate in the world. coffee is awesome and you can get good Hamong and olive oil

Stefania Natalska

Authentic and delicious Spanish food. Quite pricey

Mark Feferman

Great place to meet/make great friends. Excellent food and wine.

Tyler Balliet

Always great! Grab a bottle of wine at the shop next door. You pay retail price and get to shop one of the most extensive Spanish wine lists in New York. Then hang out and munch on great Spanish food!

Christine Alemany

I come here for Spanish favorites, particularly the turon, anchovy stuffed olives and sobrasada. I try to stop by for fideau, which they offer after 3 pm. For lunch, I get a glass of wine with a sobrasada sandwich. Their tapas are also good if you just want a snack

Anatoly Petkov

What a pleasant surprise this place is! As we walked in we thought it was just a grocery store but as I decided to peak in, I was rewarded with a nice little dining room where you can sample all the displayed delicacies at your leisure. Wine and sangria are also available and the olive oil (as much as you want) is top notch. Many of the menu choices are on show but it's worth exploring the menu in detail and, of course, the staff can clue you in on the best picks and what people like the most. Wine is a bit expensive ($14 a glass) but they give you a nice amount of it. I loved the blood sausage and the croquets were super tasty. Also very good after the freezing wind outside was the garbanzo and chorizo soup. Highly recommended - the rose sangria! Great choice and would visit again.

mary johnson

Straight out of Spain

Victor Ames

Wonderful Spanish grocery store with tapas made on premises. Good place for to go or eat in.

Alex Yaroslavsky

Excellent place for Spanish food!

Rich Kenyon

Great food and service. Only the ill-fitting music let it down.

Colton Waldack

Pretty good. Nice atmosphere, very authentic.

Camilo Valencia Villa

Great selection of authentic Spanish goods

Tina Simone G

A tasty and smokey aroma fills the store and gives you a prelude to how delicious everything is. There are samples of vinegar and olive oil and olives. They have the best truffle oil chips I have ever had and be sure to try their Chorizo sandwich.

Cris Tayza

Great food selection, drinks and nice place to have great tapas. Also grocery to buy so you can cook at home.

Luna G

A very cute grocery store with seats available inside. Their Iberico ham was very authentic. Tender and flavorful while not too salty, a definite healthy ham to have. Highly recommended if you have yet tried this type of ham. Other food was less impressive. The price is high, but consider their location this is understandable. A good spot to stop by for some small tapas for sure. Service was good and atmosphere very Spanish. Four star well deserved. They also have a wine store next door which I would like to check up next time. It looks great!

Helga Perez

Nice place for tapas and Spanish groceries.

Tim Goodvin

Great sandwiches! Very good selection of cheeses and cured meats. Pricey, but that's the area. Always something being sampled to nibble on during the short wait! SUPER

Swathi Sam

Quick place to eat

Candice Buckley

Excellent Spanish tapas place with a grocery section. Good prices as well.

Michael Makarius

Pricey, but selection is unique.

Frances Angulo

Great selection and service, go for the hand cut ham, delicious!

Dina Belyayeva

Great store and cafe. Awesome food! A nice place to stop for a highly satisfying meal.

Javivi Lee

cool place.

Adrian Songcuan

Tucked away, a delicious Spanish getaway. Finally get the chorizo.

Nicholas Ong

Bought a bottle of Fabulous Ribera Del Duero red wine from the shop next door who has a very knowledgeable sommelier. Very relaxing rest from the whole day of walking around Chinatown and little Italy. Staff is very friendly and the casual environment makes it a comfortable place to hang out with friends. Food is more tapas style and not really a dinner destination. Recommended.

Sanjay Patel

Fine wines and spirit available

Eddy

Special wine and food store from Spain with good selection of products. I try this garnacha “Obsessio Garnatxa” from Montsant winery in a natural park, ecological and Biodinamic Celler , greedy and with ripe and elegant tannins, profoundly balsamic with liquorice, resin and underbrush, with red fruit dominant flavor and a fresh and long end note.

Jacob Fleischmann

Everything here is delicious. Do yourself a favor and go on a shopping spree.

Erik F

Pansoti are delicious! Excellent lunch. Great service.

Sarah Curiel

Wonderful Spanish grocery store with ready made tapas and other food.

Jesse Wemyss

Great on Sunday, predicted storm made for available tabled

Khurshid F.

Great spot for chocolate and cheese!

Michael Terwindt

A taste of Spain in NYC.

Nelson Maldonado

Really quaint. The seating side is comfortable. The bocadillos are excellent, especially the Picante. Lots of Spanish groceries too.

Lu Zeng

Pretty good food, but it's a deli with space to eat, not a restaurant.. Note that it's BYOB, a.k.a. buy a bottle from the place next door, and enjoy it with your food here. ALSO, at Socorrat, paella is $28 per person, and I think this paella (just as delicious) was probably that much for two. Great value if you're in it for just the food!

Lesley Shneier

Delightful eatery cum Spanish grocery store. Brings back memories of Spain

Margaret Robles

Really good sandwiches and coffee. Love that they serve true Spanish horchata! Seating area is small and gets crowded easily during the lunch hour. Prices are very reasonable.
