REVIEWS OF Chez Josephine IN New York

Jared Anton

Food was okay. I had fried chicken, my wife had the spaghetti. Average-at-best. I also had a crab cake as an appetizer. Not very good. But the reason this place gets only two stars is the tables are so close together, it took two people to move the table just so my wife could get to her seat. Maybe this is a New York thing but dinner a la claustrophobia takes a lot away from the meal. Service was also terrible. The only time they offered to refill the water glass was after they had brought us our check. The bread they served had clearly been made several days before and my role could have been used as a doorstop. With so many good restaurants in New York, I highly recommend you look for another place.

PAMELA

Good food. Nice place

Sammy Thomas

Exquisite food and attentive staff.

John Vincent

Lovely evening. Showed up without reservations and seated immediately (it was late. Post Theatre). Waiters and staff were so professional, but very nice too. Helpful with the menu. All the food was wonderful. My Partner had the prix fixed meal that was three courses and very reasonably priced. I had the Pork Chop. It was HUGE. Also, and I know this is odd, but the BEST prepared Asparagus I have ever eaten. Cocktails were Cocktails. Would definitely go back. Diverse menu with a lot a tasty offerings.

Lisa J Slade

Fabulous food,wine and atmosphere!

Christopher Roth

Terrific dinner, great location.

Carole Pangburn

I went for the Croque Madame! Very good and the plate came with plenty of hot French fries! Staff was very nice and accommodating! Would come again next time I visit NYC!

Kate B

The escargot was delicious, the service was excellent, and the live pianist/singer was also a plus. Unfortunately, the main dishes, dessert, and drinks were mediocre. It was not worth the price.

jesse s

A not to be missed restaurant in hells kitchen.....mmmm i do not need to eat for weeks. So good. Spoil yourself its worth it.

John Smith

Nice atmosphere. Tasty food with reasonable portions. Service is fine. I liked the beef bourguignon.

Richard Behringer

Secluded, but that's a good thing & their food is definitely over the top

Melanie Boehm

Wonderful music, impeccable service and a beautiful menu...we will be back.

Prashant Mathur

The ambience is great. I don't think the food is worth the price. Rated based on onion soup, mushroom ravioli and red snapper fish.

rachel civil

Because we had dinner reservation later on. We only had appetizers in this cozy, warm, Josephine Baker inspired restaurant. Appetizers were delicious, great bottled of wine. Personally, the service could've been better; no warmth.

Darlene Veloso

Love this restaurant. It feels like you’re in Paris in a fabulous little bistro.

Jack Paulus

First time but it will not be the last time. Everything was first class service and food were outstanding. Keep up the good work.

Jeff Jackson

Nice vibe. 1920's piano bar. Moderate prices, good menu and great service.

Jewish Cowboy

My absolute favorite restaurant in all of NYC. Their seasonal menu is spectacular and is paired very well with some great wines.

Irene Juhasz

Excellent crab cakes, salad, spinach with chilli paste. Classic profiterole. Attentive wait staff. Eric is wonderful on the piano. Laid back, pleasant warm environment.

Nathan Beck

4.5 stars for Chez Josephine. We enjoyed our wine and healthy portions of very tasty porkchops and mushroom risotto. Loved the atmosphere of the place -- the live piano, especially, made for a special night. Docked half a point due to aloof service.

Casey Zilionis

Meh. Wonderful atmosphere with mediocre cuisine. Party of four....our appetizers were very good...A, but all entrees were bland if not watery...C-. Service was a solid B+. The decor and ambiance is classic Parisian bistro....so much potential.

Angelic Jacobs

I went here 2 years ago with a friend for restaurant week. The decor is great but the food is terrible. I orderded escargot & soft shelled crab, she ordered a steak dish. Poorly seasoned and greasy. We would not return or recommend it.

Johanna Crowder

Food and ambiance is lovely. Dinner was ruined by roaches climbing the wall.

Carl Merkin

THE best. A favorite of ours for years. Great food and classic service. Pricey, but a treat.

Sima Saidi

Chez Josephine is a New York City staple that I hope stays around for another 50+ years. The food is *excellent* and the ambiance is unmatched, because it is uniquely itself: unassumingly nestled right off of Times Square, it's especially perfect for anyone in the Theater District there for a play. When you walk in, you're often greeted by the melody of a live pianist playing tunes reminiscent of Josephine Baker's era. Josephine Baker was the inspiration for the restaurant, which will immediately become apparent, as the walls are decked in portraits of her - hand selected by her adopted son who owned and operated the place until his passing a few years ago. I'm not sure who owns the restaurant now, but I hope they simply upkeep the place to its current standards, occasionally refine the menu, but please, please keep the essence of Chez Josephine intact.

Lillian Johnson

Ots a beautiful place, the food is delicious

Stephen Brown

Good value, excellent service. Some very good food although one dish was so salty it had to be replaced by another - which was done very quickly and politely by our friendly waiter.

Dean Remy

Have been about a dozen times over the years. Usually some talented pianists and decent bartenders

Joan Miller

Very cool place, great food, and wonderful entertainment by Eric Garcia.

Robert Birmele

Worth a visit.

Vir G

Simply sublime .. what an incredible restaurant. It feeds all your senses from the delectable gourmet food to the beautiful piano music . Can’t get enough !!

D C

Great food and great service! Loved the live music! The food was absolutely great and being it was our first time there the preset menu was a great choice. We had the sea bass and leg of lamb as main and a Watermelon, French Feta and Mint and duck liver Mousse as Appetizers finishing off with a Mango-Coco Parfait Glacé and French vanilla cheesecake. Was absolutely great! Loved the interior decor a nice and romantic setting. Great for a cozy night out with that special someone or a group of friends.

geoff steck

Efficient service, great food, pleasant atmosphere, convenient (if not quite in the center of) the midtown "heart" of the NYC entertainment district crnteredcon 42nd St.

Esteban Lazar

I visit this spot a lot since I work in the area. I got to say their service is always great and they keep the spot clean at all times. Rates are fair and they serve large portions.

Kyle Bass

Great food.

Debra Mynar

Chez Josephine sets the bar for me on French cooking. Their signature lobster bisque is a sublime balance of brown butter. I love how their food isn't camouflaged in butter and salt so the flavors of the food really shine. Cozy. The perfect couples spot.

Frank Colmenares

Love that French restaurant. Great food a treat for sure.

Aviv Hassid

Enjoyed French onion soup and the piano man

Tatiana Malchenko

Charming place, wonderful staff, delicious food and piano music - perfect combination for a night out!

Sara Petersilie

Velvet walls, wild artwork, lively piano accompaniment.

Shahan Sudusinghe

Decent food and really cool atmosphere. There is live piano and music unique interior decoration

Kenneth E. Wolf

Food very good, service average, but would have liked to have known about the B health rating in the

Shai Benjamin

Very good service. Potato leak soup and cheese ravioli were great.

Alex Kovalerchik

Warm and cozy atmosphere with live piano and delicious food. This is my second time here. Ordered from a prefix menu - food was good and portions are quite large. Will surely come back.

Marko Hurst

The food is amazing. They have a lot of French classic dishes plus some newer dishes. The staff is also very attentive.

Donald Christensen

The restaurant has been able -- pretty much -- to hold on to the standards of creator Jean-Claude Baker. But his charming presence is greatly missed.

Ashley Blumentritt

Very good food and the bartender was attentive.

JERRY HOINACKI

Fabulous food and service. Great atmosphere have been going here for the last 25yrs when Im in NYC

conor feeney

Charming awesome spot.

Ray Birks

Live piano music. Sat at the bar for dinner, and the bartender was very accommodating. When I indicated that the lamb shank meat was not of the best quality, the chef himself emerged to apologize and offer a replacement. Very nice !

Jeri Simpson

Had the pre fix brunch. Standard. Food was good, not amazing. Service was attentive but the food came out slow. No jelly or jam. Just mint jelly. Just weird. Piano player was fabulous. That was the best part. Might try dinner sometime in the future.

Bruce Berger

Very atmospheric homage to Josephine Baker, with photos, prints and paintings of her throughout the French-themed restaurant. Nice menu, good French food. Great place for a pre-theater dinner.

Wei Xin Yuan

Came here for restaurant week lunch. The food was pretty good. I read up on Josephine Baker before coming here so the murals and decor made sense to me. The place feels unpretentious and there was no dress code. All in all I liked the experience.

Judith Phillips

Love this place. Great food, service, atmosphere. Everything is good, but try the Pan Seared Calf's Liver. An experience. Yum.

Bruce Chaput

Classic French food done really well. They are open late so you can eat after your show. The music is a nice addition. There is plenty of room to sit close if you want more music or farther away if you want to talk easily. Be sure to try the goat cheese ravioli... It's spectacular!

Steve Steiner

Decent dinners, a bit pricey. Nice live piano.

Nicole Marie D'Alessio

Waiter kept calling me "beautiful" after I asked him to stop. Wth?

Gwendolyn Jefferson Skinner

Charming restaurant. Good food, good service, excellent Malbec, alluring ambiance. But, it is pricey.

Char Nettles

My personal favorite when visiting the Big Apple!! Beautiful, ornate! Don't miss the bathrooms, hehe! Beef Wellington with marble potatoes & truffle sauce!!! Actually everything is so top notch!! Lobster bisque is divine & French onion soup is perfect!! Service is impeccable and has been everytime since my first visit in 1993!!! This place is old school service-wise and classic French gourmet food!! Pianist mostly playing period pieces from Josephine Baker's time. Artwork is mostly of her also.

Paul Block

Great reviews! But food prep leaves a lot to be desired. Requested rare lamb chops came out mostly raw! Fried chicken both white and dark meat was dry. 2nd attempt still dry not moist. Ahi tuna requested medium came out rare and cold! Staff were efficient. But with restaurant month this was an extremely poor showing! With some 8000 or so restaurants in NYC we will NOT be going back there!

Martha Garibaldi

Live piano, the atmosphere and ambiance is everything. The food is authentic and delicious, the escargot cooked perfectly. Also reasonably priced

Michele Lebrun

Never disappointed.

Joy Sutherland

I enjoyed the restaurant. The atmosphere is wonderful.

Elizabeth Cannon

Wonderful service! Even better food! I'm coming back. I recommend to all! One of the most eloquent wine selections I have ever seen, and the most beautiful music.

Stephen Overton

Really enjoyed this place being in from out of town. Loved the southern fried chicken dish. The blueberry cornbread was amazing. Very tight and cozy place, but very comfortable and intimate.

lovebeamer1

Invited there for drinks... Had a wonderful 4th time

Paul Dunning

Great food, live music and service. I was at the bar after work. Bartender was also owner and topped off my wine glass after dinner, very well done.

Fabiana Zembrzuski

Christmas eve. The food was ok (ossobuco and dessert). The service was ok. The music was great, but the singer was downstairs.... we were put in a corner on the sexond floor. It was really tight, with a couple very net to us. Almost at the same table. We hated the foie gras, it was very very disgusting. Pretty but really bad. But we never had eaten this before.

Thomas R

Solid yet slightly over-priced food, great decor, good service - and they make proper cocktails! The downside? The overly cramped "airplane" seating - they could remove just ONE table for two to allow for a bit more privacy and avoid a face full of butt as your neighboring diner gets up from their table.

Sabrina Haldey

Amazing atmosphere and delicious food!!!

Teddy Watson

Great place and the food was delicious

Frk Petr

Great spot right outside Theater District. Classy is a good way to describe the place - good food, service, atmosphere, and live piano. Prices are not too bad, but 'NYC moderate'. Good selection of wines by the bottle under $50.

Hillbilly House Tim costa

This restaurant is sub par. We are locals and the all around experience we had is worse than a fast food experience. I ordered the fried chicken. Over cooked inside and out. It seems as if they ore cook the food and keep it warm for the theaters rush. My waiter said he would inform the boss and the chef. Neither of them came to speak with me. Only the waiter came over with a dessert thinking I would be tickled pink. Sorry chocolate doesn’t fix mediocre food and service. You Can Fool the theater crowd but not a local

Lydie Brion

Beautiful and the food is excellent. . Excellent service. Gorgeous inside.

Anouk K

Had Christmas dinner here. Great food and ambience. Loved the piano music and had a really fun time. Only flaw was that our order didn't come through right. After about half an hour we asked how much longer our starters were taking and the waiter told us something went wrong with the printer in the kitchen. That's okay, but a little apology for waiting would've been nice. Also, if we didn't ask anything, we could have been waiting forever. Anyway, once it came it was all great. Would highly recommend this place for special occasions!

Kieran Peers

Place is an institution. Very genuinine and welcoming atmosphere. I only get to go about once a year but it's always a highlight to introduce people to the menu and piano!

Bryan Cheng

Cute and cozy restaurant with a live piano performance. The piano music was lovely throughout the evening. The food was good, but was not amazing as I've come to expect from New York restaurants. We had the duck and lamb, two of their most popular dishes.

Brendan Klein

Great food amazing environment

Gil Jaffe

Old school red dress vibes GIANT PROPS TO THE PIANIST

Sabine's Hallway Natural Hair Salon

The food was delicious. We also enjoyed the live piano and singing. We will definitely be back.

Norman Garcia

Part of the wonderful eclectic neighborhood story that is Hell's Kitchen NYC. Manuel and his team make you feel welcome and let you stay to enjoy the music and ambiance. I'm a big fan of the fried chicken but the snails and trout were amazing as well. Try on a Monday to enjoy a slower pace and live music. Gracias Manuel!

Ronald Czebieniak

Really good meal. Very nice restaurant. Attentive wait staff. And we all enjoyed our dinners. My lobster cassoulet was delicious. My dining partners liked their ribeye steak and duck entrees. The lemon torte brulee was a perfect dessert.

Shatorra Harris

Josephine is a very nice place. I celebrated my 30th birthday here and it was lovely. A nice place for a romantic dinner and live music.

Gail Malloy

Lovely way to spend a very cold Thanksgiving in the city. Excellent menu, service, ambience. Delicious dinner. Coming back Christmas weekend. Recommend.

Richard Plotka

I've been going there since it opened. Never had a bad meal or bad time!

Meg Quinn

This is my favorite restaurant. The last time I was there, Conal Fowkes from the Midnight in Paris soundtrack was the pianist and played beautifully. The ambience is very warm and intimate. Regarding the food, I love the lobster bisque! Can’t wait to go there again :)

Mark Renda

Awesome atmosphere of Josephine Blake memorable from 20's. Wonderful old time piano player. I ate fabulous dish, lobster salad and glass of wine. 1st visit. Ended with cappuccino!

Abe Burrell

Food and ambiance is lovely, great selection of wines.

B.Marie.A

Food is fantastic with big portions. Atmosphere is nice too

wendy crispell

I have been dinning at Chez Joshephine for more than 20 years. The opulant decor, straight from a scene in Paris, transports you to Montmartre and Ms. Bakers time spent there. Nightly entertainment and wonderful service compliment the bistro style menu.

Daniel Kassell

Theater District piano bar decorated with Josephine Baker's nude art.

Peter Trigwell

We flew from Ireland. .wow amazing musical accompaniment and stunning cuisine. Come see, enjoy and absorb the wonderful ambience and friendly humorous service. A little island of culture of the ancien regime in the big apple.

Chole Geddis

Beautiful restaurant and great staff

Mandy Clark

My husband and I had a great birthday dinner here. The food was delicious and the ambience was perfect. Service was also good.

Deb Mazzaferro

Piano music sounds lovely but not when you are seated right next to it and there's no break. Food is solid but unspectacular. Service is precise and understated. Wine list is reasonably priced.

Kenneth Wurman

Great restaurant with piano player and excellent food. In theater district.

Chris Welty

I love this place. It's old school, with rugs and wallpaper and curtains and you know what that means? The noise of people talking doesn't echo around and make it deafening. It can be full and you can still have a conversation and hear the piano. Oh, did I mention, there's a piano player most nights. Food is a sort of adapted French style, like the restaurant, an homage to Josephine Baker and Paris. Generally the food, wine, cocktails are good. Service has always been good when I've been there. And nice piano music in the background.

Renee Foster

This gem of a French bistro never disappoints. Elegant, yet casual and the staff couldn't be more gracious.

Suzi Barlow

Do not go here. It is classic New York great neighborhood place with piano bar, food, service, personality, charisma, that is terrific. I'm keeping it for my own. Don't go.

Camilla S

A nice place for a fancy dinner.

Karen Wells

Beautiful restaurant and excellent food

Maarten Schäfer

We had dinner at ‘chez Josephine’ at Christmas Eve. The entertainment was in the hands of Jacques & Marie, a unique Franco-American team which finds its inspiration in French Cabaret spiced with the American Swing. Jacques and Marie celebrate the joy of France and the charm of its culture in both English and French. Their extensive repertoire includes internationally acclaimed favorites by Piaf, Chevalier, Montand, Trenet, Joe Dassin, Josephine Baker, “Fats” Waller, Michel Legrand, Louis Armstrong as well as original French compositions. We had a great evening, fine dining and singing along.

Kristen Mass

Came during restaurant week and thoroughly enjoyed myself! I had the lamb which was amazing. My friend had the chicken which was also delicious, as was his soup. My prosciutto and melon was my favorite appetizer though. While we dined, there was a live pianist setting the mood which made for a lovely background.

Tim Lammon

A really lovely French Bistro/Cafe environment with live music harking back to the 1920-30's in Paris. Food was excellent. My Duo Duck was the best I have eaten any where. Lobster Bisque and French Onion soups were delicious and the Salmon was cooked to perfection with that crisp skin. The only area they could use some help in is the service. Should have been more attentive.

Lendra Kress

Fabulous food and service. Trout almondine was perfect and the lobster cassoulet a real treat. We had an apple rhubarb crepe cake which was outstanding—wonderful pairing of flavors and sauce. Our table was near the piano and the music was great but made it hard to talk at times. Also, tables to the back ate extremely close to neighboring tables— you feel like you are eating with the people next to you. Overall, a wonderful meal in a great restaurant.

Tony Mou

Summary: Mediocre experience overall. Good service and decor, mediocre / sub-par food unfortunately. Would not recommend. We arrived at 6:30 for my 6:30 reservation, but was not seated until 6:45. The restaurant was very busy, but generally I expect that if I made a reservation I should not be waiting for 15 minutes. Otherwise the service was very friendly and attentive. We got the country pate to start, then roasted salmon and pan seared liver for entrees. The country pate was good. The pan seared liver was slightly under cooked, but the flavor was alright. The roasted salmon was significantly overcooked, and the skin was rubbery rather than crispy, a real disappointment. The creme brulee was very sub-par. The top was far too thick and hard. It was like eating a hard candy bar on top of a custard. Price wise it's not terrible considering it's a French restaurant, which is usually expensive for what you are getting. Nevertheless I would not recommend this place.

Karen Bendig

Mediocre in every way. Additionally, if interested in an intimate evening of conversation, this is not the place for you: The music is too loud and not particularly good.

Vic Levy

Good food. Nice music if you like live piano. Service was also good.

Sonia Rodriguez

Amazing service and incredible food.

Amanda Sura

Great wine and food.

George Young

Been here several times for a pre theater brunch and it's always great, both the food and service!

Michael Brack

Great atmosphere, welcoming even though we were bedraggled post concert and didn't look like we were going to spend any money

Sesong Jang

Went here for dinner. Live piano creates a very romantic ambience. Food and seevice could not be better.

MIKIKO KITANI

Fabulous wine, food, environment, + service! I lost my cc + they safely had it for me --- thank u !!!

Gresseline Jean-Philippe

Had a fabulous time... Food is pretty tasty. Had the Chinese Ravioli and Chicken breast along with Calamari, and Shrimp dish.... other than the food, I particularly enjoyed the night's band and had a FABULOUS opportunity to experience the Birthday celebration of Janet Dewart Bell. Janet, you're ICONIC!

Belinda Neitzelt

Try the spaghetti Bolognese for dinner I loved it

Susan Clark

Incredible meal, the decor is in homage to Josephine Baker, who has fascinated me for years.

Grace Batren

Went to the theater, to see Anastasia they sent us a place to eat that ties into the play. I loved it , the food was delicious. The service was excellent, our waiter Andrew was so pleasant I enjoyed the whole experience.

Paul Brown

Simply magnificent in every way. A real story with a happy ending is here; discover it for yourself. Manuel is the sort of person who makes you feel like you are his best friend and his most important customer. Sonya behind the bar is skillful and attentive, and extends the warmth at the front of the house. Elegant piano music compliments the fine dining. Chez Josephine lives on, and will exceed your expectations.

Carol Smith

Always enjoyable to spend an evening eating in this nostalgic environment with soothing piano music and excellent service and food.

Marina B

It was wonderful! Outstanding food and atmosphere! Compared to other NYC restaurants not expensive at all and way better. Recommend going on Monday nights when Jaques and Marie are singing !!! It doesn’t get batter than this!!

Eleanor Kelley

Excellent scene for French food. Came in on a Weds. I'll return with my friends. This place has an awesome feel to it. Menu is similar to a restaurant in El Paso I liked.

ronnie schenkein

Good service, fine food attractively served, fascinating decor celebrating the life of Josephine Baker, and soothing piano music. Just add good conversation with friends and voila...it's magic.

Simon Booth

Fantastic food the french onion soup is delicious lovely atmosphere the place to eat before seeing a show 5 star

D Bryant

I don’t recommend. Tourist trap food and prices. Low quality, poorly cooked food.

Chris Policano

Wonderful.

Percy Holmes

Chez Josephine has an amazing ambiance and style all its own. The staff is extremely friendly and the music is delightful. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The food is absolutely delicious.

Anna Kassymova

We dropped in to have a cup of tea and quick talk before our fried headed to the airport. We really had not much time and it was the closest cafe from his POD hotel. What to say, we ordered two cups of tea and two deserts (chocolate paradise and apple crepe pie). The weather was nice and we decided to sit outside. We spent good time with our friend which we haven’t seen quiet a while, but the place itself did not leave good impression. We waited for our desert I think 20 min or around and they were sooo small, super-tiny portions for quiet expensive price. I didn’t get any satisfaction from my cake, just teased my toungue buds and I became even more craving those crepes. Overall, place it very overpriced for this food and service.

Edward Sullivan

Theater district staple, clean, good food along with friendly service.

Trekker T.

Deco is great. However the food is seriously problematic. The meat has no taste. I’m not even comparing it to Wolfgang and Gallagher. Just simply bad. The onion soup came out 5 minutes after I ordered it. Microwave? The chocolate moose was decent. But they didn’t even offer a proper butter knife. The service is the worst part of all. Waiters are ALL extremely unfriendly and not attentive. The hostess gentleman at the front is the only gem. Don’t let him go or else you have nothing left.

Linda Ivey

My husband and I came here for our Anniversary and the service was wonderful. The atmosphere was amazing and the Food and drinks were outstanding! The only problem I had was going up and down the steep staircase to go to the bathroom. But other then that we had a Fantastic time! Go to Josephine's and you will Not be disappointed.

Chip Iyer

Amazing place with wonderful staff! The music, performer, musicians and waiters were all so great, I felt like a repeat customer though it was my first time there! The only downside is that the washroom had only 1 dim light, it felt like all women were standing and moving in the dark.

Jane Howard

Delightful dinner with excellent food, wine and service. The pianist was superb. Loved the fun decor.

Erica Demornay-Cline

Great ambiance. Fine dinning at its best. Super staff. Great wine. I look forward to my next visit.

ANTHONYPAOLICELLI

Not all French cuisine, a historical landmark, and live piano. First date or after theatre local you will make a great impression!

Yomely Moreno

I loved the food and the life music phenomenal

Ellie Joy P.

So french, so chic: the plates are just the right size and they are so so tasty! A guy played live the piano the entire evening and the waiters were super prompt and helpful! The main dish also came very fast and the food was just at the right temperature! Happy we picked it for supper!

Michael Kaplan

Good food. Excellent service, charming atmosphere.

Stephen Cooper

Terrific piano player. Great atmosphere. Good food. Fun evening.

Tyson Abbott

Seems to be a mixed bag. Both my girlfriend and I ordered the pork chop - mine was delicious, my girlfriend said hers was grisley. The ambiance is nice with a live pianist, but most of the tables are much too close together. No privacy.

Obenson Amazan

I had one of the best night of my entire life. I had the chance to visit different beautiful restaurants in Manhattan but Chez Josephine is one of a kind. Very romantic, the atmosphere, the lights, the personnel were very kind compared to others. It's perfect for anyone who wants to have a special moment with the beloved one. I did not have to wait for long to have my food, which was mouthwatering- delicious. And the price is competitive compared to the other restaurants of the area. That night we had a band (Marie and Jack), from Paris who sang nice and classic French song. And ice on the cake I had the chance to sing for my loved one while Marie was playing piano. It was an incredible evening. Chez Josephine is simply perfect for people interested in experiencing la joie de vivre

Charles A Mitchem

We love coming here.

Lisa Kondracki

Absolutely loved this place. Amazing French cuisine. Expect NYC pricing but it's worth it. We visited twice in the past month, once for cocktails and a small bite to eat and then a sit down dinner. Their escargot is heavenly although very heavy on the butter sauce. Friendly staff and a wonderful pianist after 6pm. Works great for a place to eat before a show or after work. It's not a super formal place although mostly the patrons were dressed up or in business casual. A wonderful nod to Josephine Baker so don't be surprised to see her very risque portrait hanging up in all her glory.

Doris White

The best French food and ambiance. Wonderful tribute to Josephine Baker.

Julie Miller

Fabulous live piano bar/lounge/restaurant. The unabashed show girl vibe and the integrity of a vintage Parisian has been beautifully maintained in honor of Josephine Baker. True Parisians can be seen sitting at the bar...everyone knows everyone...their thick French accents take you to Paris. Every cocktail is named in relation to Joséphine, a play, a song, an inspiration, her favorites. I had the Hungry Heart cocktail, per the bartender’s suggestion. LOVED it. Strong, rich, smooth, tart but not too sweet. I will absolutely be back!

Maryann Bonardi

Wonderful ambiance and great food

Danny Saad

Quirky restaurant with a live piano player layer and competitively priced menu. It's incredibly tight though so a bit awkward for earlier dates.

Regina Ricciardi

Well, I was looking forward to going to Chez Josephine, which was my first and my last time. When I made my reservations via Open Table, I asked to have the Lunch Menu since we were coming from Smokey Joe's Cafe ending at 3:30pm and it's a couple of doors down from the theatre. Open table never advised that my request was not accepted and when I called Chez prior to making the reservation the person who answered the phone said since we would be coming close to the end of the lunchtime it shouldn't be a problem. Well, it was a problem at 3:45pm and Chez would not accomodate us at all. We chose from the Dinner Menu before 4PM which was outrageously expensive for the quality of food. Do not eat Elivir's Fried Chicken, dry, dry, dry and tasteless. French Onion Soup was just lousy either it was too old or baked too long to melt the cheese, my father makes better, and the Pate` was just adequate at best. Coffee was not good, very very bitter. Unfortunately, the whole experience was not pleasant, a lot of money for lousy food choices and no accommodations. I think they must have a very temperamental chef, because he/she did not accommodate our requests at all. Thank you.

Rafael Avila

History and good brunch on restaurant row at unbelievably low prices. Fantastic!

Jennifer B

I ordered a lobster bisque and a organic baby greens salad. The lobster seemed very undercooked and the salad was just an unappealing pile of greens missing the goat cheese and who knows what else.

Terry Lee Kaly

Fabulous As always: a NYC institution .... best memories

Jan Marie Hagan

Love the brunch!

Mihai Manitiu

Poor management....one person that was with us got sick from the lobster and they just ignored it. French restaurant with live piano. The food choices are very good with escargot, liver, duck etc. it’s a nice romantic atmosphere.

Karen Lott

Great food and excellent service!

Jim Villeré

Very good meal. Terrific location convenient to theaters. Excellent and gracious service.

Joshua M

Good service and good food. Nice piano music for added ambiance.

Robert Hauck

Very nice place. Ambience and service were very good, and the food was excellent.

Cyril Triquere

Only came in for drinks but the menu looks very good.
