REVIEWS OF Bistro La Source IN New Jersey

Hebert Hartwich

He ordered a Chimay & I had a nice white wine suggested by our server. Then it was on to the mussels! I ordered Mariniere (white wine & garlic) and Thai (a coconut milk base), and my husband chose Provencale (tomato & wine) and Normandy (mushrooms, bacon & cream). They were all delicious! I liked the Thai and Normandy best. Our server brought some delicious bread which we used to soak up all the great sauces.

Nice little Bistro. Wife and I dined here. I don’t like the bathroom being so near the tables. It’s literally in the same dining area as the tables. Was seated directly in view of it and that bothers me. So we asked to be seated outside which they were happy to do. Seating outside is basically in the parking lot next to the garbage. Not too bad because there is a bit of a fence to separate. One annoying thing is that dogs are allowed outside so everyone had their dogs next to us. Place is pretty casual so I guess it’s ok. Prices are bit high to be considered a casual place. Food was decent. I had the lamb chops while wife had pasta and cheese platter. Lamb chops were burned and lacked much taste (sauce). Asked for well done but didn’t want burned. Overall ok and may repeat.

Maria Park

It was a comfortable dining experience - romantic outdoor seating with decorated lights and candles on the tables. I ordered the tuna steak and my partner got the special: Soft shell crab with jasmine rice. The crab was well seasoned and the chef really showcased their quality ingredients. On the flip side, service wasn’t what I was expecting. Waitress wasn’t attentive to our dining needs and every course was delayed. We tried to have a good time despite of the wait time. I would definitely recommend if you are up for the food and the cozy romantic location.

The place is awesome. Food is really exceptional. Wines are great for the value. Can't miss if you are around Paulus Hook. Outdoor area is sooo cool in this semi urban area of Jersey city. We go there almost weekly. Love it!

Andrew Heichelbech

Excellent food and atmosphere. Wait staff is attentive. Prices are reasonable. One of the hidden gems in Jersey City. Now that it is summer you can even dine outside on their patio.

John Steadman

Always a choice for Lunch when out with the dog on a nice day. Food is consistently good and dogs are welcome in n the nice outdoor area.

ruth lopez

Love this place. My favorite restaurant in Jersey City. George is the best bartender.

John Lowry

Always good service and good food. Love the wine selections. Glass options are a great sample of each type of wine. The bottle selection is diverse and reasonable priced. They offer a great lunch special also

Grayce Love

Right in the heart of Jersey City. Nice view of Manhattan from across the Hudson River. Outdoor seating and small parking lot, a huge thumbs up. Great neighborhood, lots of people out and about, and plenty of dogwalkers. Nice vibe, the food was outstanding.

anna reyes

Unlimited mussels for $13 on mondays. Pre fixe for $35. Reasonably priced wines

Kanu Suguro

It's not quite haute cuisine but the food quality is good. Think more rustic and traditional.

Pavel Pahanov

Great place to get couple cup of beer

Ashley Wharton

Tejas Nadkarni

Quiet and friendly bar and great food.

Marissa Plaza

First time at this place and liked it! Their ahi tuna was awesome! I also tried the lemon crepes! Good service, everything was brought on time ( we were 10+ people). Definitely will come back.

Phenomenal Mussels

This restaurant is stuck in the past. 10 years ago, it would have been a 5 star review. 5 years ago, a 4 star. But guys it's 2016 and you haven't changed a thing. Yes, the formula world, but innovate, shake things up a little more and you will do well.

Ingrid Arnason

Intimate space. Great menu from French Escargot to French Crepes, creative salads. Excellent very friendly service. We really had a great time there.

Roland Rogers Arnold

The Vouvray from Marie de Beauregard is the perfect breakfast wine...off-dry and mineral laden, I don't need a Sauternes for the Seared Hudson Valley duck foie gras as the acidity of the Loire Valley Chenin Blanc is up to the task. The Salade Lyonnaise with the duck leg Confit follows as does another perfect glass of wine. After a brief spell in the sun, I order the Flourless Chocolate Torte With sea salt caramel gelato and a coffee. The streets are jammed so chill, I will. Perfect lunch at The Source. Cheers.

Moved to JC a few months ago Been meaning to try this place for a while. We finally went today and for starters we had the fried calamari and the fennel salad Lyonnaise those were both very good. The waitress that took our order was also very friendly and nice. I was craving a good piece of steak and saw on their menu they have steak and frites - what better than that on a sunny hot summer Sunday. The price was $30 which I thought was considerably overpriced. But I thought ok... I'm craving a good steak and if it's $30 it's gotta be a good piece of lean quality meat (as one would expect paying that price) - was I right? ... WRONG! The fries were really good however the centre piece of my meal (the steak fillet) was average size of a fillet and about 80% was fatty chunky pieces of fat. I had to really dig and cut through the steak and cut out all the fatty pieces. When I was done eating the steak I saw the pieces that were cut out (the fatty pieces) was essentially the majority of the portion of steak I couldn't help but be upset that I was just about to pay $30 for a portion of such poor quality meat. So when there waitress came over I had to raise the complaint. She was very kind and told the owner who then came over and condescendingly explained to me why the quality of the steak was so fatty... he started telling me about the different parts the cow and why it was so fatty and proceeded to ask me if I wanted it taken out of the bill... to which I answered yes please...at that point I just felt disrespected with his condescension... it doesn't take a genius or someone to be highly educated in the different parts of a cow to figure out that an extremely fatty piece of steak should not be priced at $30.... it's fine if you want charge such a high price but at least ensure that you are providing a high quality product and when it comes to steak for me a high quality piece of steak is one that's lean and low in fatty lumps.

Great French food. The lamb chops where really good, the Escargot was delicious and the chocolate tarte and creme brulee desserts were amazing!!!

Regis Perez

Low Key Bistro with nice views of Freedom Tower , 3 course meals were Generous in Portions and Flavourfull. Entres and soup were a bit on the extreme Hot side but very tasty and well presented in General a nice place to spend a quite evening or a nice Lunch

Miguel A Cintron

This restaurant has a beautiful outdoor setting to enjoy the outdoors during the warm weather

Mike Argandona

Dope spot in a cool part of town

Michael Taylor

Love restaurants that serve mussels in multiple broth options. Especially when they are all you can eat on Monday. They are one of the few places in JC that have a private parking lot. Great beer and cider list. I like that it is in a quiet neighborhood at night that attracts locals.

Margaret Crabtree

Lovely bistro! Great good! Friendly staff!

marc-antoine bredemus

It is not a French restaurant. The service is good but the food is low quality and it doesn't taste at all like French. Exemple escargots with vinegar garlic sauce instead of garlic butter melted sauce. Bread is never French and doesn't taste anything. The seafood, same thing, the sauce is not tasty. Other than that you can have a decent wine there lol...

jason molidor

This place has a decent outside seating area. Staff was really nice, and very attentive. The brunch menu was decent. It had a sizable amount of French fair. I wasn't too stoked on my omelet provincial. The ratatouille was not very exciting, rather bland and boring. I was expecting lots of fresh herbs in my omelet, but they were sadly lacking. My wife's placed eggs were a little over done. A friend had had the gormand breakfast, it looked incredible. The breakfast potatoes were ok, nothing special and a little cold. Sometimes I feel as if I am a little nitpicky, so I'm keeping the 4, because staff was great, and atmosphere was good. However getting basic breakfast wrong is a big pet peeve of mine.

Mihir Pattani

Small place in downtown Jersey City. Nice ambience. Decent food.

Paul Nieto

Love this place, very comfortable and friendly plus great food at a good price. Love the bartenders.

Jason Farrugia

Went for restaurant week and greatly enjoyed it! Will definitely be going back. Relaxed atmosphere and good sized portions!

Christine de la Garza

One of our favorite restaurants in the neighborhood. Food is delicious and lovely. Atmosphere is warm and laid back. Service is super. We love to stroll over early evening for a glass of wine and some mussels, enjoy brunch on the weekends, and we order from them via Seamless more often than we should!

Sam Klein

Great food and good service served in a please atmosphere

XingWei McIntyre

Our party came here on a Friday night. It was very busy. The manager was very helpful with wine selections. The prosciutto was the best. I ordered fish and chips, they used cod for the fish. This dish exceeded my expectations. The way the restaurant fries the fries was amazing. Everything was really really good for its price. The color of the pictures is slightly orange ish due to the lighting of the restaurant. This is a gem spot in Jersey City NJ.

Jeremy Webner

Oh my goodness, if you are here you will be doing yourself a disservice if you don't get the escargot appetizer. You cannot go wrong with the prefix options and I have relatives who swear by this fried chicken.

Dharma Villareal

Restaurant could be in Europe, reminded me of old Madrid. Great little nook eatery in a historic neighborhood. Hamburger and tomato soup was good.

Anastasia Shorr

Good place to have lunch. The food is pretty good - typical American cuisine, with burgers and pasta options for lunch. The burgers are actually very filling and good, maybe a bit on the greecy side, but who is counting. There's an option to get sweet fries instead of regular fries - my choice always. Although this place doesn't get crazy packed during lunch times, the service is a little on the slow side. Overall, the food is good, the ambiance is nice and modern, prices are on the high end. Pretty much NYC wannabe.

Nikolay Yamakawa

Delicious food and excellent service. Mussels are my favourite dishes here, I'd recommend to try Normandy ones, they are going to make your taste buds smile!

Mona Goyal

We were meaning to try this place for a while and finally today we did. To begin with, I had high expectations from this place , having seen it packed all the time. Alas! The food was very bland, less to none seasoning I felt. I had to use salt to be able to eat. Given the taste , it definitely felt overpriced. There were barely 2-3 vegetarian options to pick. Not kid friendly at all, I asked for spoon n fork for little one. They didn't have, my kid couldn't handle spoon for adults. Essentially,he wasn't able to feed himself. Not worth it

Dave Hannigan

I had high hopes. I like the atmosphere and the patio. Staff was delightful, but the food was just, well OK. It needed seasoning. All three entrees were victim to this, the burger, fish dish and cassoulet.

Miles Sweeney

I visit this lovely spot a lot! This is my favorite spot to to have a good dinner. I visit this spot at least once a month. The cooking is excellent, the staff members are friendly and the cost is reasonable. I enjoy being in this place over a decent meal.

TJ Zolt

I always have wonderful food here. Mussel Mondays are a great way to get a feel for the place (although you may have to wait). I highly recommend the Cassoulet when they have it on menu, and they have a constantly rotating specials list that never disappoint. Plus if you have a United Dining Account they participate.

Steven Polakoff

The best french food in downtown Jersey City

Elizabeth Scholz

Delicious meal. Friendly staff.

Hanna Jin

Great lunch deals with full sized appetizers and dessert. I ordered a french onion soup, steak salad, and chocolate mousse, and all were fairly good, especially considering the price tag.

Adam Simmons

Short words for here. Get business done is a controlled environment safely. Worth every penny for the food alone. And "extra" benefits are are free for the ones who need.

Jason C.

Mussel Mondays here are the best. Even thought it was packed we barely had to wait to get a table outside and the staff was amazing.

Charlie Shay

I may have found my new favorite place in Jersey City for my mussel fix! Big portion with big flavors! Besides the mussels, their braised lamb shank is also a great menu item. The meat is tender and falls right off the bone! Definitely will frequent again!

akhil sharma

Really great food and drinks. I love the spinach enchiladas with a skinny margarita. Note: My friend and I wanted to eat outside as we have in the past, but their outside seating was full. It's quite busy in a Friday evening!

Renee Stanley

The food and drinks were amazing. Thank you for all the deliciousness!

Karina Eframian

I've been here with group of friends on busy warm Sat. Nice spacious seating outside. Food ok. Service ok.

Red Dacquel

I absolutely enjoyed my meal here. Cozy French Bistro feel. Rustic, homey flavors that bring comfort and warmth on a cold winter night.

Seth Kagan

Great selection for vegetarians and their lunch price fixed menu is great. Highly recommend

Martin Umahag

Took advantage of Restaurant Week and grabbed lunch here. Limited appetizer menu, ended up getting Fried Calamari on top of the prixe fixe choices. Wife got the steak salad, and I got the Muscles (Thai) with Fries. Both were excellent.

Taquisha Council

I will never go back not worth the money

Grace Woo

Cozy French cuisine with indoor and lovely patio seating and free parking! Good friendly attentive staff serve up tasty food. Bartenders are quick and creative. We stayed for a prix fix lunch that was more than enough. A nice convenient go to in the Paulus Hook neighborhood.

Eleanor Goldman

Good service, generous pour of wine, good food, reasonable price

Sergey Kovalev

Nice small French spot with unlimited mussels deal on Monday's. Good wine and craft beer selection

Maria Glodek

Excellent food source in Downtown JC

Paul Ryan

Used to be one of my favorite restaurants, tonight I was served a Ceasar salad tonight with lettuce that looked and tasted like it was taken out of the garbage!

Martin Rogulja

One of my favorite French bistros in the world. Chef is amazing but his line staff could be more attentive to slight order changes. Best food for the money in NY area.

Kevin Broomell

First off, this place has free parking! That alone is worth 3 stars. The food and service here were both pretty good. We had the tomato soup, oysters, Octopus and fried chicken. The Octopus was below average, but everything else was quite delicious. The service was also friendly and attentive. I would come back.

Ylfa Petursdottir Soussa

Beautiful and cozy French restaurant in a historic building. There is a nice fully stocked bar, same staff for years. The food is great, the atmosphere is great, the staff is great. I highly recommend this place.

Frances Brown

I love this place. I'v been going here for years. Food is amazing. Waiters and waitresses are so awesome . It's always consistent. I'd say this is my favorite spot in all Nj

Subhash Bhattacharyya

Great intimate restaurant with great food and service. GEORGE IS ONE OF THE BEST Bartenders in the business!!

Gonzalez Ana

Our favorite spot! Great atmosphere and service. A real place without the trendy element! I love the staff!

Terrence McLean

Great food and great service in a welcoming setting.

B. Nosam

Superb locations, nice quiet and the staff all were so friendly. They always over unlimited Mussels on Monday nights after 4PM for $13 a person.

Rob Goldstein

Very good food and service, nice place to take a date for a romantic dinner.

Manda Joy

Was just average I had the branzino and creme brûlée - cook on the fish was perfect but the creme brûlée was not fresh at all something was wrong with the custard it was very hard, not smooth and creamy as it should be.

Jerome Go Yanko

Just ok, wouldn't necessarily go back.

Alexander Sharov

Paulus Hook and the Bistro match for life. Awesome atmosphere, great food, nice people.

Martin Saposnick

Good was just ok. Service was not - we got served an appetizer after everyone else finished theirs. Then the entree was not served with until the rest of 10 people were finishing theirs. One entree went to the wrong person

Aarti Virani

A neighborhood treasure! Love the al fresco seating, provencal omelet, and the strong coffee. We brunched here with our toddler and appreciated the wait staff's accommodating attitude. We'll most certainly be back!

Zac Mendelson

Excellent

Ben Geffken

Classic French cuisine in a cozy restaurant, just far enough away from Exchange and Grove. Set on a side road on the corner, the bistro is easy enough to find with a parking lot for diners. Inside is comfortable with natural light in the front near the windows and plenty of medium-dark wood and brass at the bar and tables. Having only been there for lunch, the restaurant has never been crowded, though we are told the evenings are mixed. The staff is very good, having knowledge of the food and drinks. In the event they are not familiar with something the manager and chef are nearby. Lunch has a pre-fixe and limited lunch menu to choose from. The steak sandwich, mussels, and pear salad are all excellent while the burger and lamb sausage were good, but not a favorite. The wine list is decent with a good array of US and French of white and red. Although not bad for the quality, the price is what keeps me from being a frequent patron. Lunch easily ends up $30 with food, drink and a tip. I would definitely recommend and am very interested in coming back for dinner.

Sara Foster

Have never actually eaten inside since it feels like the outdoor seating is always an option (we finished lunch in a rain storm once, it was still great!). One of the most dog friendly places in the neighborhood. Great food, great drinks, and service is fantastic. One of those places where you feel like you can lounge for hours, drinking and talking the day/night away.

Karen Garrity

Always excellent! Great service and friendly staff.

Victor C

Solid french classics, friendly staff. You get a nice piece of Foie with the app. Good value in JC, nice outdoor area as well. They have their own parking which is also a def plus.

Matt Zambrio

I've come here two or three time for the unlimited mussels, not sure if they do it still, it's been a while, but I was usually pretty happy. They have I think 4 or 5 different options for the mussels and like I said, all you can eat. I can put away a decent amount of food so I was pretty happy with this. I haven't tried anything else here so not sure how the rest of the food is.

Carlos Lizarraga Rodrigo

Delicious food and good service. I loved the filet mignon and the steak; great meat. Also loved the outdoor terrace.

Raymond Trevisan

Good food, good service and good value.

Daniel Lieuwen

Place was beautiful. Food was good. Staff was attentive and friendly. They gave us free wine for our anniversary.

Andrew Tuke

Great

Ken Suguro

A great hidden gem. I live nearby, and had walked past La Source so many times, not realizing it was a French inspired bistro. It's a bistro, and not a haute cuisine fancy pants kind of place, so the technique is a bit rustic. The food quality is quite good. They also have all you can eat mussel mondays, which if you're a mussels person should be exciting. (I'm totally not a mussels person)

Stefano Poloni

Loved the environment and the food. Definitely the place to go back again and try something else from the menu.

Scott Richards

Great service and delicious food!

Jonathan Lucas

It's always wonderful mid-day or evening. Great atmosphere and wonderful food.

Ian Dixon

The food is deliciously amazing!!! I must come back once a month! Nomssss

Philip Fusciello

Mussels, mussels, mussels. The best. + other authentic & Delicious choices Friendly helpful service

Ihab Dana

First time I had to return the French onion soup. It was too sour

Karen Galli

Loved my meal today - lunch pre-fix. I can't believe I've overlooked this adorable spot all these years! The highlight of my meal was the endive, apple and walnut salad. The walnuts were AMAZING! (I'm not such a fan in general but man, I've been thinking about these walnuts all day!) I will definitely be back soon - will bring my husband next time.

Danny Saad

Great cocktails and interesting food tucked away in downtown JC.

Shari verte

I really liked this place. The staff was friendly and the food was great. I had the Cod du Vin. It was amazing. I received a large portion, so I took some home. It tasted even better the next day!

Karson Yan

Come early to get a good table, outside dining is great and we get to bring our dog!

Francisco

Very nice place, a small and cozy restaurant with an attractive menu and good service, absolutely recomendable. The quality of the food is worth the price, very reasonable indeed.

Luiz Felipe Furlan

Food is great!

Michael DIsa

Delicious food, not the fastest service
