This has been one of my favorite restaurants for years and whenever I go it's a treat. That's why it was so disappointing to recently get a meal that was, frankly, depressing.
We went on a Saturday night. First, my wife ordered a drink with hot cider. Instead of using cider, they used iced tea (???), somehow didn't notice a cloudy drink was miraculously clear, and then we overheard the bartender telling the waitress we were full of it when she remade the drink. (The fact that our waitress agrees with us is the only thing that keeps this from being a one star review.)
We got lentil soup. It was boring, but lentil doesn't usually knock your socks off.
Then we got fondue as an appetizer. It was separated. They told us to stir it, and we did, but this did nothing. After two pieces of bread, we gave up, and told our waitress to just bring us the mains. We figured a place like this would not charge us, but they did. So that was about $20 for two pieces of bread with stringy, rubbery cheese and a thin, winey broth on top.
I got the stew, which was dry, and lacked much in the way of vegetables. My wife got the chicken, and the sauce was too acidic.
I can't understand how a restaurant that was so consistently good could produce a meal like this. I wouldn't have said anything, but charging us for that junky fondue was beyond the pale. The whole night, we alternated between disappointment and stressing over whether we wanted to send things back or ask for things to be remade.
I sincerely hope that this was just an off night and they go back to the way they were. But I don't think I'll be driving 40 minutes to blow money on mediocre bistro cuisine anytime soon.
