This place has a nice unique atmosphere, we happened to go for an early lunch one Saturday and we were the only people in there which was a little awkward. The burger was delicious and I would recommend. My boyfriend got the zucchini linguini which we had assumed would be a pasta dish with zucchini but we were mistaken. He was far less happy with eating just a plateful of vegetables but at least it looked pretty!

Baked potato was baked potato must have came off of someone else's plate cuz there's old and rubbery fish was dry and Frozen and Frozen I could have bought Gordon's at home and that's the smallest salad I've ever had in my life the dressing was good though and the sour cream was called thumbs up on the condiments

Sad I can only give 5 stars! The food was AMAZING (the new England burger and the bacon wrapped scallops yuuuummmm and the seafood chowder OH MY GOODNESS ) the server was super nice and the atmosphere was really nice over all! Definitely go if you are in the area!

I have eaten here several times and it has always been excellent. Service is mostly good but occasionally slow. The atmosphere is wonderful. I love going in and sitting near the fire. As a visitor to New England, it has the type of atmosphere I was expecting and I enjoy it very much.

Wasn’t crazy about the service, the food or the price. The most frustrating part about them is the way they hand write receipts. Had an issue with the bill and the bartender refused to re-add the bill up after we noticed that there was a double charge for the appetizer. Instead she argued with us rather than just getting a manager to resolve the issue. So won’t go back because there is plenty other places with the same type of food.

Whether you stop by for a beer or bring your friends and family for dinner, you are guaranteed excellent customer service. The food is untouchable! I had their lobster eggs Benedict for brunch......sooooo good!

The food and atmosphere are wonderful. Staff is friendly and really are top notch. Took my best friend for her birthday and we had an awesome time. The only drawback for me was the price. It was $85.00 for two people. I almost had a heart attack. I guess you can't put a price on happiness though.

The food is always amazing, the service is always wonderful, and the owners are the kindest people you will ever meet. My wife recently hosted a bridal shower here and all of our guests raved about what a wonderful atmosphere the 401 has to offer. All around this is a 5 star establishment and certainly our favorite place to visit for a good time and a great meal.

When I arrived, I was greeted nicely and then told to follow the waitress took me up one step in and let me a few minutes later someone says what you need well I was brought here and then left well said we want front back side bar up to you as it well that's up to you. I said it is your job. Service was mediocre. Food was mediocre. It will be some time before I go again.

I have been coming to the 401 Tavern since I was a kid with my parents. Now it's a laid back atmosphere for cheap drinks and decent food. Steer clear of the Hampton townies.

Great food good service. Best seafood chowder. The lobster roll had too much dill for my liking but that's very minor. We were upstairs it's a very interesting room. The table was 2 2tops pushed together one was solid the other had at least a 6 inch wobble. But i would go back often

Disappointed. No Air Conditioning... or it was turned off (late July) Our wait was a bit long. The waitress was a bit off. The service was slow. The meal was bland. (Haddock) Too bad. The atmosphere was very good but that was all.

I have been here a few times while in Hampton and had good experiences but today we were not happy with our lunch. We got blackened haddock tacos and scallops and rice. The tacos didn’t have any “blackened” spice and the scallops were expensive and only got 5 little scallops. We were very disappointed today. But... we stopped there in the past and loved happy hour and the value of the food. May have been an off day...

Cozy atmosphere. Good waitstaff. Mostly good food. Medium well burger of dining companion came out medium rare, and nachos aren't as good as they used to be. Mac n cheese was fine, so was spinach and garlic. Big selection, too.

Staff was super nice even though they were under pressure to get ready for a large group coming in. The manager and wait staff were very accommodating and made us feel just as important as the large group, which by the way came 1 hour later than scheduled. Great food, great atmosphere and extensive beers on tap. Will definitely be back again soon.

Every time I come to Hampton I stop in. The staff is always friendly and I like to change the menu on them and they always agree to cook it like I want it. I know ima pain in the bum. But.... real business go the extra mile to serve the customers, 401 does it for me every time! I learned there are new owners and that same type of service has carried on. I come to Hampton twice a year for business and its always fun at 401. Stupid rhyme lol Thanks again 401!!!!

The atmosphere surpasses the food. Very rustic feel, and the wine bar upstairs is very unique. Beer prices are very fair, however wine and mixed drink prices don't correspond. The menu also feels a bit dated, could use a number of more trendy options.

Danielle is a star! Her warm personality enhanced the evening with her hospitable ways. My girlfriend ordered the spinach artichoke dip and had the prime rib for her entree and I ordered the zucchini linguine. The food was exceptional! My meal was light enough that I didn't feel like had a big meal but the portion was a good size and very filling without the guilt of a big meal. We will be back! This is our new favorite seacoast restaurant!

Fairly new to seacoast area. 401 gives you that local "non chain" restaurant feeling. Very local hangout. Menu is wide range of very tasty choices ...something for everyone. Usually eat in bar area. Always busy place - which says a lot about the food and drinks they serve.

Let's see the 401 tavern is a tavern and they serve food and they also serve alcohol some types of alcohol that they served would be mixed drinks beers and an assortment of wine maybe Chardonnay melo and other yummy concoctions that you can drink they have food available maybe hamburgers maybe steaks and fish and other things the funny thing is you just tell the person what you want and they bring it to you kind of fancy

This is just an all-around good local bar. The staff is friendly and recognizes you after your first visit, they have Smuttynose IPA on tap and a great selection of beers and liquors, the inside has old world ambiance and the deck outside is perfect for enjoying summer days, the food menu is surprisingly good and the crowd is always laid back.

My family of 12 adults and 4 children had Thanksgiving dinner at 401. We have been many times before and have always had an excellent meal. Our servers were phenomenal, dealing with our very energetic group, always with a smile on their faces. Most of us got the turkey dinner, but others chose the prime rib or seafood. Everyone, without exception, thought their meal was really good. Great portions at great prices. We continue to be impressed with 401 Tavern. Thank you for a another wonderful meal!

The restaurant falls short in my satisfaction as they wouldn't substitute potato chips for anything else. it had to come with the burger or sandwich meals but the restaurant offers gluten-free options so why not offer healthier options than potato chips like a side of fresh vegetables; made no sense to me. Hamburger was supposed to come with lettuce and tomato and didn't. We told the waitress that we were ordering a burger and a salad and splitting it between the two of us. The the waitress failed to bring an extra plate and had she told the kitchen maybe they would have served it into two plates half salad half Burger. While the food was delicious the extras failed to go above and beyond to rated higher than three stars.

Great food, but the employees are rude and disrespectful don't even bother taking it up to the manager he's just as bad if not worse. It's an unfortunate thing they have great food but the people running it are nasty. Not the mention the waitresses are constantly putting on make up and dressing very inappropriate not a great place to go with your husband the girls working their will flaunt their breasts and bodies at men coming in.!!

Was visiting NH for the Smuttynose race this weekend and came here for dinner the night before. It wasn’t that crowded but the service was awful! Our waitress was very aloof, forgot multiple dishes, and never refilled our waters. We did it ourselves. On top of that my boyfriend got horrible food poisoning from the bacon wrapped scallops and had to miss the race on Sunday. Definitely don’t recommend.

Had an unimaginable deal from their steal and Lobster special. Literally $1.00 more than a philly cheese steak sandwich. Complete no brainer. Started off with a perfect seafood chowdah. John the bartender is too scattered. Not an employee who has the demeanor or patience for this business. He is too rushy and is in the wrong profession. I will not be back if this is the kind of staff this place is going to hire. Not good when the bartender has no personable skills and its as if you are bothering him. Plus he never once asked how my food was once he served it. Awful employee! Get rid of him! He will tank your business! Bad business and a terrible bartender to have here when there is so much better out there. Bowl of Seafood Chowder 10.91 and Ceasar Salad 7.91. Total ripoff.

One of the best restaurant experiences my family has ever had, great food, drinks, staff, building has history... Etc. This place is definitely worth a stop. The building has been around since 1683 there's some great history behind it if you want to know it.

This place is amazing, just a few mins from my parents place. Super comfortable and has Hygge. Beer is always fresh, food is amazing. Owners are awesome, staff is hit or miss as they hire very inexperienced waitresses, but that's minor. Eaten here a lot and never had a bad meal or stale beer. Highly recommend.
