Go to Moxy! Right now, go! Or son took us there on a recent trip to Portsmouth. Great mixed drinks. And those amazing American food tapas. All of them were excellent. I particularly liked the calamari. Most of the time, calamari in restaurants is tasteless and you dip them in aioli to taste something, at least. In this dish the calamari itself was tasty. The clam dish was really good, too. But that may be off the menu by the time you go there. I told you to go right now, but you thought you could wait. Serves you right.
Ridiculous selection of small plates that is always changing to incorporate fresh, local ingredients. The cocktail list is also constantly evolving and has something for everyone. You can tell when you dine here the amount of love and effort that goes in to each dish. Highlights: New England Dinner 2.0, Short Rib Toast, Caramelized Onion Dip, Fried Clams, Chicken Fried Frog Legs, just to name a few. Also, you must end your time here with the Whoopie Pies!
Arrived early for drinks and immediately loved the atmosphere. The friendly bartender made me the best lavender-lemon martini I’ve never had with my favorite vodka (Cold River) that I rarely find when I’m out. (Yay!) I have two severe food allergies and the staff was helpful and not judgy which means so much. Had the greens (how someone made a salad taste like crack I’ll never know) and bread and butter pickles which were perfect. (Had some that were also good at a very foodie place the night before but these were more balanced and were lovely.) Dinner was excellent. We shared the chicken thighs. I’m not a chicken person but my friend is. I am now a Moxy’s chicken thighs person. Delicious! Did want to note that the music was extremely quiet. We eventually were sitting with 3 other couples at the bar and everyone was speaking in very low whispers in order to not be heard by the people next to them. I know that sound is an issue in restaurants with articles about tinnitus etc. But this was reeeeeeeally quiet. Uncomfortably so. Felt like the volume could have gone up by as much as 15-20db. Pretty sure the music plus ambient sound was around 30-40...library quiet. Other than the sound level it was awesome and I look forward to going back!!
Great tapas restaurant...food comes out quick and there is a lot of fresh organic dishes to choose from.
Great vegetarian options! And custom cocktail options!
Good food. The server could have tried to make an effort to give good service. Seemed like we were an imposition
Loved the food, the drinks, and the atmosphere!
Great food and service.
Great tapas meal with lots of choices.
PROUD that My Cousin MATT Created & OWNS it. Go on website OR better> GO THERE!
Excellent combination of flavors with every dish. Lots of new items and all the old favorites.
Wonderful drinks, great locally sourced food and fabulous staff. If you have the chance to go here you always should!
Great small portions (Tapas style) of American (Californian influenced),dishes.
Delicious cocktails, amazing locally-sourced small plates. A great place to go with a group and share lots of different things. Great service as well, always enjoy my visits!
I liked their the bone marrows dish and Brussels sprouts. Drinks were not the best.
Overrated. Service was great, but the food was only okay. Corned beef fritters were crispy on the outside but pasty on the inside. Mini sausages were mealy and dry on the inside. Moxy bread (like toased bruschetta) was luke warm. My wife was unimpressed with her clams, calamari, and pork belly bites. They only thing that was truely good - and it was excellent - was one of the desserts we had (which is not listed on their current on-line menu). Something like cake with ice cream. The fried dough we had was like eating hot, dry crackers.
Good food slow service
Moxy is an American style tapas bar with food from all influences. The small plates seem to be made with love. If you don't like really small sharing plates and trying lots of different things this place obviously isn't for you. What surprised me more was how good their cocktail selection is. Great favorites that stick around and some killer specials which apparently change daily or weekly. For me this is a great place to go if your getting something quick, or if you're staying for hours and like to keep ordering 2 or 3 things at a time.
Prices are a bit high but the food, service and atmosphere are great!
favorite dinner spot in the area!
Great little bar and restaurant. The place serves tapas which are small plates you share. Just keep ordering until you had enough.
Food is amazing, staff is amazing, Atmosphere is amazing! I ordered the cornbread, fresh out of the skillet it was warm, flavorful and delicious. The bean spread on toast was also yummy. LOVED the wild boar meatballs! Will definitely return
Goodbar excellent tapas
A great little place. Everything that I've had at Moxy has been excellent. The whoopie pie sliders are beyond delicious!!!
A nice quiet pleasant place hidden away from the main roads
Great food, drinks and service! Unique American style small plates try out some of their classic offerings that are marked OG on the new menu.
Great place to go when you have a business clients! Probably the better and fun place. Choice of beer is better than average, wine below average and spirits are above average. Food is tasty and is in small portions, prices are little bit on higher side considering it's Portsmouth NH and not Seaport Boston. Overall good experience.
After much searching a great cocktail bar and restaurant. It appeases my foodie and cocktail geek sensibilities. You can order a Sazerac and not have to explain how to make it.
Good food and nice atmosphere.
Super nice upscale spot with local vibe. Expensive though
The chef owner Matt Louis is a culinary genius, with the best tatapsand locally sourced product
Absolutely terrible!
Get a ton of plates. Share them with your girlfriend. You're welcome.
Great atmosphere! The short ribs were tasty
Always great!
Friendly bar and awesome tapas!
Food is outstanding!! Very speedy service, excellent bartender!!
Cool small place with amazing food. Great bartender and staff.
Excellent place for sharing. Food was excellent. Drinks were top notch. Staff was wonderful.
Everything was amaaaaaazing. Super fun bar, great drinks. I’m pregnant and the bartender created a fun mocktail for me.
Top 5 meal of all time! Get the corn bread and it will change your soul. Beers were great and an amazing dining experience.
Food is so good. Adult beverages (we tried 2) were pretty awful. Service was fair.
Cozy, just right tapas
There was absolutely NOTHING we didn't thoroughly enjoy. I wish I had more to tell than "it was incredible", but it was so overwhelmingly good that there just aren't words. You would be doing a disservice to yourself if you didn't pop in, and give them a try.
Great friendly and innovative tapas bar. Excellent fusion of local food and global flavors!
Not cheap but food quality and creativity are off the charts. Good vibe, local and space as well.
Food is always phenomenal. Their award winning chef is always coming up with new and delicious plates. It's best to get many plates and share so you can try all of it. Johnny cake community is my favorite dish! Moxy is my favorite restaurant in Portsmouth. It's not the cheapest but still reasonable and very worth it!
too expensive for what you get, not bad food just not enough
Not Spanish-y tapas, but bar tapas - which is good too. The mini-burgers, sausage rolls, goat cheese bruschetta, and whoopee pie sliders! Kind of dark inside, but pretty spacious!
First time there and every dish was better than the last. They do American Style Tapas which allows you to try many different things. If you get a chance go!
If you like tapas, you'll love Moxy. Awesome casual place with farm to table selections prepared to perfection. We always plan on an hour and a half there for great food and conversation in an amazing atmosphere. We tend to order about 3 plates each (plus a dessert) and that's always more than enough. Pair it with a nice local brewery on tap!
American small dishes. We would call them tapas but they are too local for that. Great use of local ingredients and a great bar scene. Definitely a return destination.
Great food and atmosphere
Great tapas innovative bar drinks. Great service
Everything was awesome. Moxy is awesome.
The menu looked better than it tasted. Nothing was bad. Could be that I just chose poorly. I found the funguy drink to be too sweet for my liking and the pork belly to be a little over cooked.
My favorite restaurant in Portsmouth! Delicious, unique and locally sourced food, beautiful presentation, great service, and fantastic cozy atmosphere. The place to go for foodies. Don't miss this place!!
Amazing food, craft cocktails, and neat atmosphere
The tapas are delicious. The menu is always changing, which I like. Going in and seeing what’s in store is always a delight. A little pricey but definitely worth it. The food and drink menu is never a let down. I give it
Great dessert. And the drinks were amazing.
The beef short rib marmalade is one of the best things you'll ever eat!
Well executed and excellent combination of flavors. A definite yes!
Great selection.
Ridiculously good. Everything was delicious and perfect. So many choices. Dessert was great!
Tasty, appealing and original small and larger dishes
Moxy meals make mondays meaningful most months. But my money means more mostly.
The best mini burguers of new hampshire! And it also has a really good service
Excellent food and attentive service.
June, 2017 Seacoast Area New Hampshire, USA There are several restaurants in Portsmouth NH - Kittery ME rarely disappoint. Cava, Street, Black Birch, Black Trumpet and Mombo all come to mind. Moxy, most of the time, is as good or better than these spots. Why? They take a few more risks. Some don't work so well; some experiments transcend all expectations.
Fun place to eat. Really good food.
Great surprises. Delightfully good bites
Excellent service, cuisine and vibe! Totally recommend it!
This place is an American tapas style restaurant with DELICIOUS offerings. Definitely take advantage of their $1 refills for house made sodas. Their menu rotates a lot, but if any kind of ribs are on the menu, you'll want to try them. Also their assortment of puddings dessert is quite tasty! Friendly staff, and nice relaxed vibe. Also, check out the old magazine decoupage on the walls in the ladies room.
Got a chance to visit beautiful Portsmouth NH. What a beautiful chill city! Moxy was probably one of the best places I have eaten thus far. Each dish was full of flavor and everything on the menu was just amazing. I can definitely see why this place won a James Beard award.
Have been going here since they opened. Once a year. Worth the drive. Everything is amazing.
We ate at Moxy on Thursday evening having remembered our meal one year ago and we were very pleased by the understated yet delicious courses. The fried pickles were outstanding and the beef rib with goat cheese on home made bread was memorable. The halibut with mushrooms so tasty. Our plan was to meet friends for dinner the next evening and they had reserved elsewhere. We intervened and made a reservation for this evening at Moxy as the corn beef leapt out and so we dined there for a second evening. We were delighted and the corn beef is outstanding. Bravo.
Very good food at a good price. Great seafood chowder. Excellent service.
Pretty good tapas. Decent variety
Innovative food and quality cocktails. The cornbread was perfect! Great place to grab a bite and enjoy Portsmouth.
The mini burgers are the best I've had around.
Good service, cute atmosphere, but don't you hate it when you spend almost $40 and are thinking about getting another bite to eat somewhere else on your way out? Prices are a bit too high for these tapas and taste-wise I have certainly been more satisfied with other locales.
The food was just ok. The Sangria was horrible. The manager was not friendly. Only the waitress was lovely.
Plenty of vegan options! As a vegan, Moxy is one of the few non-vegan restaurants I've visited and felt I had a completely delicious meal.
Food was tops. Great atmosphere. The whoopie pie sliders are to die for.
Great food, rotating menu, interesting cocktails. Perfect for date night.
Excellent tapas. Fantastic service. Great bar selection.
Although it can be a pain to get a seat without a reservation, I highly recommend making a trip here. The food is amazing and reasonable priced. The unique combinations make for outstanding tapas!
As a chef I am rarely impressed with a restaurant from top to bottom but moxie had it all. Excellent mojito, interesting wines, great waiter and exceptional food. The bluefish, bone marrow, mushroom noodles and more were incredible. Thanks for being there.
Interesting menu, good food, perfect portions, good service, lovely atmosphere.
I have been to Moxy three times now and each time has been a excellent experience. Its easy to over order though.... They are small plates but you fill up fast.
Hidden gem. Cool atmosphere in this spot.
Delicious small plates and cocktails are outstanding !
Great stuff here. Fast service and a good variety of tapas. It was all very tasty!
Great food, great beer and wine and excellent service.
This place is awesome! An incredibly unique and delicious experience. The first time we went we were lucky enough to have the head chef/owner bring us our food. He explained the entrees like we were on the Food channel and my wife was absolutely giddy. The food truly is one-of-a-kind.
saw u in dners and while i hate fine dining the chef matt is one hella funny dude.. the way he was talking about the tools and food was awesome.. keep up the sucess matt
Came in with high expectations, but didn’t live up to the expectations. Service wasn’t very quick or friendly and for a James beard nominated chef way to many things came out of a fryer, including the brussel sprouts, fish, and potato dishes. Waiter didn’t seem too knowledgeable as he couldn’t even remember the few beers that were on tap.
Great cocktails...food was good.if your not looking for a full meal but need something to eat then the small plates are perfect.
Great flavors and textures
Amazing food. Small plate heaven. Tried the New England dinner tonight and it's an instant favorite. Cabbage leafs to wrap mouth watering corned beef with carrot slices and an incredible maple flavored aoli is flat out genius. Fried pickles, fried clams, heirloom tomatoes, chili corn bread, simple salad with blueberries - every one was amazing. A+++++
I had a wonderful experience with this restaurant. I was visiting the area and needed to find out details about the restaurant beforehand. I corresponded with Owen who answered all of my questions and set me up perfectly to be able to order take out from them with the menu of the day. The results were amazing. The food perfectly satisfied both a carnivor and a vegetarian. I've definitely be going back soon.
One of our favorite spots in Portsmouth. Both the cocktails and food are imaginative and unique, and executed to a very high standard.
All around amazing restaurant.
Expensive but great small plates.
Good food good beer
Great food and draft list but very small portions
Hipster vibe/atmosphere. Most of the staff wears plaid/flannel. That being said, the food is almost always good with a minor oversalting issue on some menu items. The beer list always has a few greats, in particular the IPA selection can be excellent. Overall, my wife and I enjoy visiting for date night from time to time.
Just excellent food. Not pretentious. Small plates are pricey but creative and so worth it.
The food was ok. But the lavender soda I ordered was delicious!! It was sweet so if you dont like sweet then don't do it.
Fantastic restaurant! Tapas to die for
We had no reservation and it was Christmas Eve, the host was extremely polite and gave us a great table. Our waitress Bella, was really great and attentive and tried to accommodate my dietary restrictions. The food was well done and very flavorful. An overall great experience. Will definitely recommend in the future.
It is a cozy restaurant. I went there with my friends before our conference and the food was so good. We order the specialty that day and the food came in five dishes, in a certain sequence. The food was in small amount but very beautifully decorated. I thought I would starve by the tiny amount but actually after eating the fifth dish--dessert, I was very satisfied and very full. It is a little pricy $35 for the specialty dinner, but I think for a special trip to a conference, it is worth the money.
We just had drinks and apps. Craft liquors and drink menu. Loved the pork belly and cod croquettes....
Great food. Nice atmosphere. It is a bit pricey
For two weary travelers who couldn't make up their minds about what to have for dinner, Moxy was the perfect solution. A little bit of everything! The pork belly, rarebit and beef short ribs are all must haves.
Great tapas! Great drinks!
Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Love the name. I respect their locavore mentality and commitment to honest food. I had the scallops for $12, there were three plus a few florets of cauliflower. It's tapas. Anyway, they were a bit sandy but getting past that, delicious. Definitely worth a second visit.
Really can't think of anything they could do better. Outstanding American style tapas, we picked many, many dishes at random and they were all spectacular. Be sure and order something from the pickles menu. Superb wine list, clever and affordable. Excellent service. Gorgeous upstairs dining room with moderate acoustics permitting easy conversation.
The drinks here are delicious. Fresh tasting and on the modern side (which is great!) I love the fish dish here, it's the secret hit of the menu, to me. Everyone in my family comes for the short rib, that fish is always fresh, healthy and delicious.
Really impressive. I saw several awards for James Beard Semifinalist. How the chef was not the winner, I don't know. All of the dishes were well presented and easy on the eyes. The flavors were bold but balanced from the starters to the main dishes all the way through to the decadent desserts. This is our new stop off when crossing the Maine border. Phenomenal!
If you're visiting from out of town this is an excellent place to visit in Portsmouth. The owner and chef Matt Louis, who was named a semifinalist for the James Beard award a couple years ago, occasionally runs food to the tables and is quite entertaining if he has a second to chat before returning to the kitchen. The prices reflect the quality of the food, not the quantity. If you are not a fan of tapas or small plates then you will not like this restaurant. I find it easy to fill two people for around $50-60 worth of food, minus drinks and a tip.
Really great flavors, awesome staff went here tonight with my wife. It's a perfect little spot in Portsmouth, will definitely how again.
Small plates, variety and great service.
One of the best Tapas place we have been to. Variety of new food items we were able to try. Pumpkin tacos are the best.
Friendly wait staff, awesome bartender, incredible food and cocktails!
Great food, fun environment. If you want a main course, traditional approach to dining, then this won't be your place. But if you like to experiment and share then this is a great choice. Enjoy!
Great food. Locally sourced. Modern plates. Creative.
Excellent food and bar service
I found the food to be good. Not great. Service was good. Portions good. A bit pricey for the type of food they serve. The boneless ribs on toast tasted like reheated crock pot meat. The sauce helped. Deserts were very good.
Amazing food and great service!
Good tasting food depending on what you want. Very small meat portions though, so you're primarily paying for sides.
The pasta was way under cooked the sole dish was very dry the duck was way over backed so bad it was we only took a couple of bites the corn bread was good and maple flavor butter wad very tasty
Not sure if it was because we were there in the off season (late January) but the food was very poor. Caramalized chevre was bland and difficult to eat, salt and vinegar frites had even less flavor (though they were well cooked). Pork belly was very dry and the pickled carrot which came with barely had flavor. 4/10 food (2/10 for the price point) 8/10 presentation 9/10 service Food was not worth the money spent. Great service though!
Super tasty, I like Tapas in general and this is with local ingredients (long listing of local farms supplying them) and really creative flavor alchemy. Service was friendly attentive and prompt. What more? Going back soon.
The food is of the best ingredients and the preparation is done by artists who are masters at their craft.
I can't get pver how good this place is. I loved the oyster and the burger. Yum.
Mini on size but not on taste. Everything we had tasted great. The levels of flavor achieved in small plates was tremendous. The best part is since they are small servings you can try many different items. I will definitely go back.
Can you say pretentious. The definition of moxie (yes I know it is spelled different) is force of character, determination, or nerve. This fits the restaurant Moxy, because believe me they had to have a lot of nerve to serve these tiny dishes at the price they charge. Just to hit some of the low points, the meat balls, three on the plate, were three different temperatures on the insides from cold to almost hot. The fried clams (five in a double order) were so small I could only presume that they were rejects from a local seafood restaurant. One of the meat dishes had a sauce with the distinct overwhelming taste of ketchup. The drinks showed up about one third of the way through the meal even though they were ordered prior to ordering the meal. We had 6 people and they tacked on the automatic twenty percent. You could tell because the waitress surely was not working to make a good tip, we barely ever saw her. Don’t get me wrong from reading this I like ketchup, but maybe they should put the bottle on the table some of the other dishes could have used it. After spending over $350.00 for six people (only one drink a piece) we all left hungry. Thank god for the Roundabout Dinner and their hot brownie sundae.
The food is so delicious! The small plates have such complex flavors and fun to share with friends!
Out of all the great spots in Portsmouth, Moxi is #1 #gameofthrones
An American tapas bar that serves locally sourced food & drinks. Moxy can also essentially make anything gluten free as they have separate gluten free flour and are aware of cross contamination. It's a cozy location for a date night or a small group outing.
Delicious food and great drink menu!
This place is so fun for a date night, lots of unique things on the menu to try
We ate here twice on our vacation in Portsmouth because it was so amazing.
Fantastic small plates. Unique cocktail offerings. The New England pudding trio is a must. My go to recommendation for Portsmouth dining.
If I'm going to a higher end restaurant I don't expect they're going to give me a cap on a time I can spend here. Save your time and go somewhere else
Still a good restaurant but the incentives seems to go only to the drinks. The menu looks the same as the last time we were there over a year ago.
Excellent food, service and atmosphere. Can't wait to come back.
Great food and cocktail selection, not many options like this in the area!
Great service. Creative and tasty food.
Great place Food and service perfect
Great service, fun food, excellent cocktails. Our waitress was the best. My wife has food allergies and she took such care to help her order. Our favorite dishes were the Pork Bellies and the Whitefish.
went there for restaurant week. Food was not that good and portions were ridiculously small. Service was good despite the awkwardness they seemed to have knowing that the food was a rip off. Never going back. PS: Lindt chocolate at the end was best part of the meal.
Little pricey. Really good food. Mostly small plates.
Good variety of offerings, interesting mixture of flavorings, prompt and nice service, delicious and filling meal!
Great place. Recommend if you are in Portsmouth
Their description is the right one, "Modern American Tapas" describes this restaurant perfectly. The prices are definitely not what you find for tapas in Spain, but the food is all locally sourced and so creative. The weight staff and cooking staff are all so nice and do a lot of the community.
Loved the food and the service. Great find tucked on away on a side street!
