Great food and ambiance.

Paul Gibula

Good Italian food.

Joe Captain of Therapy

Awesome Awesome staff are great and the staff excellent. Celebrated our 11th anniversary and I mentioned it when I made reservation when I called they treated us great and it was one of the best restaurants I have been to in Portsmouth other than Bridge Street Bistro ( French Country food owner grew up 30 miles from Paris )

Diana Nguyen

I came here for a work dinner and the food, service, and atmosphere was fabulous. We had plenty of apps to share: figs, a cheese board with fermented vegetables, meatballs, and bread. All were lovely! Because of the group size, we had a Prix Fixe menu. I chose the pasta carbonara with truffle oil, sweet potato gnocchi, and the petite fours (cinnamon meringue, lemon cookie, pistachio cannoli, and a chocolate truffle. The carbonara was my favorite by far, I wish that could have been a main! The gnocchi was good and the sauce was decadent but it wasn’t my favorite.

Daku Null

I very much loved it there the restaurant was so well decorated and the food was incredible the service was extrodinary and bathrooms didnt smell bad it was a great expereince.

Jon Broome

Fabulous dinner and outstanding service. Massimo himself personally stopped by our table to make sure everything was up to our expectations.

Richard Alpert

Never, ever disappoints. Eat at the upstairs bar !!

Loved this place...so nice....we ate in the basement and it was an unbelievable wine cellar vibe. Highly recommend...food was excellent

Suzan Kilani

Amazing food ,great service. The Osso Buco was so delicious.Highly recommended.

Wow! This place is amazing! Ambiance alone was stunning! The wine/bar room upstairs was beautiful, honestly looked like you were watching a performance of some sorts. The waiting area downstairs (see accompanying photo below) appears to have been ripped out of Harry Potter. At least, that's how I felt haha Now, the food. We ordered the kobe beef meat ball for appetizers, the veal chop and tagliatelle carbonara as entrées. First off, I think it's sacrilegious to ground kobe beef. Texture wise, the meat ball was too uniform, like it was to finely ground. I would have preferred it to be a bit chunky. But overall, it was amazing! The ricotta, pesto, and marinara! Damn! I was delicious! The carbonara was equally delicious. The full entrée size was too much, in my opinion. I think an appetizer serving would have been more than enough IF you plan on having a secondi. This is probably the one carbonara that will ruin the rest of the carbonaras you'll ever have - it's that good! The grilled bone-in veal chop was cooked. to. PERFECTION! But what stole the show for me was the side of brussel sprouts. It was crispy fried and seasoned well. ☺ I don't really know which one was the best, the veal or the brussel sprouts.. For desserts, cannoli and semifreddo! Both were light on the palate and just enough sweetness that it doesn't bear on your palate. I will definitely go back so I can try the other dishes! Thank you, Ristorante Massimo for the great meal and Corey, our server, for making our dinner memorable. ☺

This place is truly a hole-in-the-wall it would be easy to walk past but I would advise against it. The food was fantastic and the service was exceptional. The ambiance is amazing, this restaurant seems out of place in Portsmouth it feels more like a 5-star restaurant that you would find in Paris.

Apropos Sales

A real treat, good for special occasions. Imaginative, delicious, high end food. Most dress up to go there. One of the best restaurants in the area. Wonderful appetizers and desserts.

Tom wallace

Wonderful atmosphere, great service!!! :-)

Kevin Kimball

Delicious carbonara

YAN GRUSHEVSKY

Great food and service!

Sheree Nicholl

From the moment you walk in until you leave, you won't be anything but pleased. This treasure has a terrific atmosphere, the food and service are the quality of a fine restaurant in Italy, and Massimo, the owner could not be more welcoming to his customers. The only problem is I don't live in Portsmouth and can't go more often! OH, call them and they will open the gate for parking right across the street. Very convenient. Also, they are very good at handling any problems with food allergies.

Rich Shaw

Always an amazing experience! Great food, great staff, great atmosphere. Love it here!

Chris Smith

Top notch! Excellent food. Each dish is crafted and presented amazingly. Great date night spot

Virginja Manro

What can I say, this is our favorite restaurant, hands down. The food is just amazing, the service is impeccable and the atmosphere just rounds it all off. We’ve been coming here for years and have never had anything less than an amazing time. The owner visiting the tables is just ice cream on the cake!

Ken Blew

Some of the best food in Portsmouth!

Bill Greenberg

Thanks so much Lee and the entire staff for a great night last night. Requested a nice table to celebrate a special occasion and they delivered. The lobster tail and beef short rib were awesome, service was perfect , will be going back soon.

robin lurie-meyerkopf

Amazing restaurant! Always great service, creative delicious food in a comfortable atmosphere. Massimo is the best host on the Seacoast! Upstairs or down it’s the same quality.

Myles Falvella

Great meal, very good service and friendly staff. Best Italian in Portsmouth.

Alec Newcomb

Great Italian eats and a solid wine list with always excellent service.

Joanne Allard

Highly recommend this wonderful place! Excellent Italian food, great service, romantic setting and the owner personally visits the table and is very personable and charming!

Anne Schwartz

Lovely restaurant, great wait-staff. My own personal taste asks for a slightly lighter hand with 'flavoring' ingredients.

milesdd

Fantastic experience. A complete find in Portsmouth. I often meet clients or Boston friends in Portsmouth for dinner, and had never known about Massimo. I live in Portland with no shortage of stellar restaurants. But there was something really special about this place. The brick and stone interior is old school lovely, the staff are superb. For some reason, I didn't expect the food to be top notch. I am REALLY picky about Italian food, given it's my heritage, and I am nearly always disappointed with something at Italian restaurants. Not so with Massimo. The best carbonara I have ever had is being served here. Truly delightful. I can't wait to return

Collin Crowell

Romantic atmosphere and good food

Bob Valeri

Good food but a bit overpriced

Ashley Campbell

Food was ok. We heard great things about it, but our meal all around wasn't that great. Additionally, service wasn't the best.

Maurice Marquis

The host is very attentive, professional staff and there are no wrong choices on the menu. Top notch.

Scott Belt

A remarkable AMAZING experience. You will want take every moment, every flavor, every texture, every visual delight as you dine in rich historic atmosphere. Food is fresh and exquisite.

Mark Poveromo

Awesome restaurant terrific apps...true Italian fare

Ron

One if the best restaurants outside of Boston. Great food, excellent service wonderful management. Top shelf!

Keith Orr

Update: bartenders changed and only reservations at bar. Totally lost its charm.

Jeremy B

I do not know if it is because I ate here on a Tuesday night or if they have changed chefs since the previous glowing reviews of this place but the food here can only be described as inedible. I had the scallop risotto. You would think since half of the items on their short menu included Italian truffles they would know how to prepare them. For those who do not know, if truffles are not prepared correctly they smell and taste like lighter fluid. Also a staple of fine Italian the risotto I was served was heavy, bland and what little flavor it did have was of the aforementioned lighter fluid. When I complained all I was offered was another drink or a free appetizer on my next visit. I did not want a drink I wanted to leave as soon as possible and I will never return to a place where I had to pay over a hundred and fifty dollars for inedible food. I came in looking for a fine dinning experience on my five year anniversary and left just feeling ripped off and totally unsatisfied which they did nothing to correct. They seemed more concerned if I was local than if I had enjoyed myself. The only saving grace of the fiasco was the wait staff was very friendly. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS.

Mary Linnihan

Loved this place...romantic, great food and service!

Jeffrey DeAlmo

Just perfect every time. Fine dining Italian, freshly made northern Italian style pastas, perfectly executed dishes, fantastic atmosphere, Massimo flawlessly attending to your needs. Try the chefs tasting menu sometime for an experience. Very romantic setting as well. This place is as good or even better than places in Boston's North End or Providence's Federal Hill. And I grew up in RI... I 100% recommend Massimo's.

Michael Blumfield

Wonderful atmosphere, food, service. Will stop in again when in town.

Gabriel Burdan

I loved it a lot, the food was amazing,

Caleb Fields

Good atmosphere. Informative wait staff. Large wine selection. Food was good. Only reason for not giving 5 stars; I had a delicious entree but a very small part was not fully cooked. It wasnt enough to send it back. I did enjoy it. I will definitely return.

Ronald Bigos

Very nice restaurant. Food and service was great.

Hennie Barendrecht

Great food and great people

Deb H

Wow what an amazing meal that took me back as if I was in Venice. Amazing food, fabulous service -- romance !!

Ken Madsen

Went there for our anniversary and everyone treated us like royalty. The food was exquisite, the atmosphere phenomenal.

Over the top wine selection by the glass. I was able to try three red wines that have been on my list to try. Excellent hospitality at the bar up stairs.

Fantastic classic American Italian restaurant. Great atmosphere and terrific food. Perfect for a date night, or an Italian family gathering.

Mike Carnivale

Make sure you dress the part or else they will ignore you. Food is fine, nothing to write home about.

Helen Jul

awesome place food staff a special place

Caitlin McGovern

Old world Italian atmosphere, out of The Godfather, coupled with delicious food and excellent service.

Victor G

First I have to say that I used to live in a place where I grew up with Italian restaurants (providence, RI) so I know what a good Italian place is. We had some family in from Paris, France and wanted a good place to eat. We called to see if they had a table for 6 (three adults, three kids) and they told us to come. My family from Paris was impressed I was super happy, they treated our kids extremely well. The chef is a champion and the wait staff was on point. We felt very comfortable. The decor was classic, very nice place. If you want good food, classy well manured staff, this is the place. I got more than my money's worth.

My wife and I visited Portsmouth for our anniversary last fall, and discovered Massimo's for the first time. Loved it so much, we had to come back, and we brought friends this time. Service is excellent, and our server, Candice knew the menu and the wine list by heart, made some excellent suggestions, and was really fun to be around too. Ambiance is very romantic, and the historical building is used well to give a cozy yet refined atmosphere. Couples should request one of their small tables set in cozy nooks where you'll feel you're at a private dinner, but they have larger tables for a group like ours this visit (we had 6 people, and there was plenty of room). The food is superb, and matches, if not surpases, both the service and the atmosphere. Chef Jethro blends traditional Italian cuisine with a modern flare that keeps it exciting and new. Fresh ingredients, surprising combinations, and great presentation combine for a superior delivery of Italian tastes that rivals the best of the North End, without the traffic or long waits. I enjoyed the meatball app, plus the Filet, which was cooked perfectly, and paired with some califlower and artichoke. Wife had the spaghetti and lobster, half portion, and she loved it. The Primi dishes offer full and half sized orders, so you can order as an app or entree. That left room for dessert, where I enjoyed a couple mini cannolli's that were really good, and my wife had the Pear Semifreddo, which she says was 'to die for'. Can't wait to come back again! Reservations recommended, as they are always busy, but call ahead and ask for Mossimo himself, and he'll make you feel like family!

Dennis Mejia

Very accommodating and warm environment

Peter Enright

Stopped in to visit family in New Hampshire. Last minute decision to go into Portsmouth downtown for drinks and dinner. Found this spot for Italian food. So glad we stopped in. Everything we ordered was out of this world. Very friendly and helpful staff. Service was above and beyond. So happy we stopped in.

Rylee Pellegrino

I only had meatballs, but they were definitely some of the best I've ever had. A hidden little gem!

Pam

Fine dining. Decadent food. Exceptional service.

Joshiua Hallenbeck

Wow what a meal and Massimo was such a gracious host!

Pat Ryan

Loosing the fun vibe and personality since Chris is gone. Drinks good. Apps portions are too small. Apps have always been a weak point there. It used to be our favorite Portsmouth bar!

Garrett Trombley

Holy cow yes. Awesome drinks, great food, big portions upstairs, smaller ones in the little bar upstairs. Just stellar foie Gras and big ass steak portions. One of the top three in Portsmouth for sure.

Brian Z. Guertin

Absolutely superb in every way! Spectacular menu, service & staff in a beautiful, historic building, hidden away for your foodie pleasure! Pleasure to meet Massimo, a perfect gentleman with a gem for all to enjoy! I highly recommend this restaurant!

Laura McGrath

Best Italian for I've ever had besides in Italy!

Steven Sposato

Simply the best Italian restaurant in New Hampshire. One of a kind atmosphere, hand made pasta, and fantastic service.

Katrina Ahuja

My husband and I came here for a date and absolutely loved our entire experience. The hostess and our server were friendly and helpful. The ambience is beautiful and intimate, full of fantastic paintings of Italian scenes. The food was the best Italian food I've tasted in the U.S. The complexity, range of flavors, and creative presentation surprised and impressed me. This was my best dining experience in Portsmouth and will be our go-to special occasion restaurant in the future!

james welch

The food and service is simply top shelf!

Christopher Chapman

Fantastic restaurant. I was a little apprehensive because my wife and I were bringing our 7 month old son to a restaurant labeled as the most romantic restaurant in New Hampshire. All my worries were cast aside. I have been to many, many, restaurants all over the world. Some of which were extremely high rated and I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt, this place has the BEST customer service of any restaurant I have been too. They went above and beyond in making sure my son was well taken care of. Every waiter in the restaurant came up and talked to him and made us feel comfortable and like we were lifelong friends. As for the food. It was outstanding. Every mouthful resulted in closed eyes and a satisfying "Mmmm" sound. I have high standards for Italian food and they knocked it out of the park. If you are at all interested in great food and a great experience, I couldn't recommend Ristorante Massimo any higher. A must for anyone in Portsmouth or anywhere on the East Coast for that matter. Truly superb!

Stephen Rogers

Great food. It is a must try in Portsmouth.

Caitlyn Hassett

Amazing Valentine's dinner. Service and food is always amazing.

carringt0n wilson

Awesome small bites..I could do those for dinner but the entrees and even the desserts were too good to resist.

jonathan levesque

Beautiful atmosphere. Food to die for

frank murray

The menu is an impressive offering of proper cooking technique, classic Italian fare, local ingredients, prepared and presented with excellent service. The owner was personally involved in welcoming guests and making sure the dining room and service was perfect. This was our second visit, and pleasantly surprised again with the quality of food and service!

Miriam Negron Carrero

The food was quite tasty at this fine Italian restaurant. I had the beef tenderloin and it was very good and meat so tender, the way I like it. my boyfriend had the fish stew and he liked it as well. the dining room below is nice and cozy, but a bit small in space. Restaurant was hard to find even with GPS. We couldn't find parking either - my friend also had the fish stew and he loved it. we opted for no appetizers so that we could enjoy the main dish. No dessert as we were all full. the bread was a little disappointing for me. i prefer warm Italian bread, and this wasnt. The service was impeccable, though.

Ginger Mentel

Great food. Had a great time!

O'Nifty B

Romantic atmosphere, excellent staff, upscale Italian menu unlike any other.

shari poinsette

Awesome service and good food

Eva Arnold

The owner is very friendly, he checked on us a couple times to make sure we are satisfied with the food and service They have a great wine selection and the best cheesecake i ever had The plac is a bit pricey but worth every penny

Bri Masse

(If you are thinking about coming make a reservation!) Easily our favorite restaurant while living in downtown Portsmouth. Personally preferred the upstairs seating because it is much more casual, but the whole place is beautiful. Sam and Seth are great waiters and make the experience even better. There are a lot of different sized plates and half portions offered, which is nice if you arent in the mood for a huge meal. Will definitely be returning next time I go back east!

Mindy Snow

Great atmosphere, very helpful staff, delicious food. A lovely date night.

Pat Ruggirello

Excellent Restaurant. Dined here many times . UsallUs eat downstairs in the main Restaurant. However, eating and drinking in the upstairs bar is also a great place. The food was too die for and Massimo is always around greeting and mixing with his guests. Highly recommend this establishment.

Michael Tarbell

Excellent food, excellent service! I had the grilled Halibut, which was perfect!

Alexander Wohlwend

Hidden gem of Portsmouth. Whether you sit upstairs at the bar and enjoy the menu and drinks there, or get lucky enough to find a seat downstairs in their main restaurant, the food and at atmosphere are enough to fulfill any foodies dreams. Fantastic food and delicious selection of wines. Cant wait to go back and have more.

Jeff Spires

Outstanding food, drink and service!

Erin Wharton

The food was AMAZING. We were greeted promptly and got to meet Massimo. He's a character and made our experience even better than it to begin with! The waitstaff was nice and service was great, the atmosphere is very classy and the food matched it! Delicious!

Joe Seluk

Very nice place to celebrate a special occasion. Great food and excellent wine selection.

Outstanding experience. Great food, excellent service. Thank you for tonight!

Joseph Parish

Woooowza! Amazing food & drinks!

Janice Schnurr

I would have walked right by this place, but my son and daughter in law ( who treated me) pointed it out. Nothing much to look at from the outside, but once you enter, wow! It's so beautiful and upscale. Everyone from the hostess to the waitstaff was friendly and very cordial. The food was incredible. The appetizers, my entree ( salmon with fingerling potatoes) my never ending glass of sparkling Italian water and the take home dessert. What a treasure this restaurant is. And I felt so pampered! Can't praise this place enough. Incredible cuisine friendly staff and beautiful atmosphere make this restaurant a definite must.

Kevin Broomell

Everything you'd want out of Italian food. My fiance and I came here and had Steve as our waiter and we were thrilled with our experience. His recommendations were spot on and he coursed our meal out for us perfectly. This is a must stop at when in Portsmouth

Deborah Bennett

We went last night for the first time. We got the meatball appetizer which was excellent, very beefy. The salads were a generous size and perfectly dressed. The trout special was fantastic, the osso buco very rich and delicious -- enough to enjoy with some to take home. The carbonara was traditional Italian style, complete with an egg yolk to mix into the hot homemade pasta. This created a wonderful heady truffle-flavored coating on the noodles and an overall drier dish with the delicate flavor of Romano, instead of the more American style carbonara with pasta swimming in a puddle of parmesan cream sauce. Massimo personally visited our table a couple of times to be sure we were happy. The dessert was a hazelnut torte which I feared would be too heavy after our meal, but it too was distinctive in its varied flavors and textures without being overbearing. Five stars, would recommend, and we will be back!

Awesome

Janice Angell

Wonderful

Amy Colangelo

Awesome atmosphere and customer service. Food was excellent. Waitress was good at her job, but a bit pretentious. She frequently corrected my Italian husband's pronunciation of menu items. Hostess and owner were warm and welcoming.

David Crompton

Just a wonderful experience. Great food, great service. Nonni's meatballs are a must have!

keith larose

Everything about experience was very good. Great atmosphere, the food was delicious, decent bottled beer selection. Friendly waitstaff

Elle Holman

The customer service was fabulous! We had a large group and our servers were really terrific. The appetizer with the mozzarella cheese was to die for....the best I ever had. My family generally liked their meals. I asked about the spaghetti carbonara and was told it was the best. It was not. It was served with a raw egg in the middle of the dish, (yes, now I know t's the traditional way to serve it) surrounded by the carbonara. It was nauseating to look at. I guess the heat of the dish was supposed to cook the egg, but the meal was lukewarm, so I basically had a raw egg mixed into my noodles. It was also quite mushy and tasteless, so I only ate a few bites. It was my birthday dinner, so I was a little disappointed.

William Abbott

Place was amazing

Molly Doherty

Always great service, very knowledgeable staff, amazing elegant selections.

Brendan Hallissey

My wife and I love it here! Service is warm and friendly and they serve up some amazing dishes. I recently had their pasta with black garlic sauce. Definitely will have that again!

Joey Tran

Thought the restaurant was very nice! Great decor good ambiance. Perfect for a date or anniversary! Came here during restaurant week. Would definitely like to visit again to try out more of the menu. Ordered the cod which came out a little more well done than I prefer my fish. But the rest of the meal was great no complaints!

Diane Meade

Exceptional food and service

Krystin Kerekes

A great experience! Cannot wait to go back!

James Tooher

Very disappointed, although the ambience was nice, the food and service was disappointing. I really wanted to like this place but I will not return.

Delicious food, romantic atmosphere, impeccable service. This is our absolute favorite date night spot, 12 years and counting. We love you Massimo! Diane & Tim

Beth Bennett

Recently, my husband and I made reservations for dinner. We called to confirm (spoke to the Manager as well) items on the menu and were very surprised when items were not available. The dinner we had was less than expected in regards to taste and not what we had requested. My husband ate one bite and said he would not eat anymore to which we just left. We spoke to the Manager in person who had nothing to offer for the poor food and experience. We will not be going back.

Ristorante Massimo – Portsmouth, NH – 3/10/2016 One of the many things I enjoy about coming to Massimo is that it's always wonderful experience… The service is impeccable and each dish is better than the previous one that comes out of the kitchen… First Course… Local summer sausage made with Breezy Hill Farm pork, cornichons and mustard... An nice blend of Flavours that just dance on your palate in preparation for the meal… Second Course… Asparagi con Prociutto… Roasted asparagus, lemon-saffron hollandaise, Prosciutto di Parma, crostini and brandade… What an amazing dish... The brandadade lightly breaded and then perfectly fried… The hollandaise counterbalances the other spices and are sure to delight… Just wow! Entrée… Seared scallops, double ravioli filled with chickpea and ricotta, cauliflower and ricotta salata… A main course here is like going to the theatre… It's presentation… It's blending of flavours… It's and orchestra in cuisine… Dolci… Marbled semolina kettle corn cake with rum buttercream and caramel… Just the right amount of everything… And not too much of anything… And of course capped off with my signature Cappuccino… Perfect as usual… Thank you Massimo for adding yet another favorite memory to an already memorable life… See you soon…

Sharon Malindzak

Wonderful food, attentive service

Cindy Wrocklage

Marvelous food, wonderful staff.

Christopher Wolfe

Always fabulous

Marina Digenova

Just perfect!

Julia Lopez DiVincenzo

I’ve always called it “the restaurant that you propose to your girlfriend at”. So worth it for restaurant week if you’ve never been. They are forgiving with dress code, considering the waiters are in black tie downstairs, but upstairs some patrons are in baseball hats. Don’t be intimidated, go and have a memorable experience.

Daniel Hussey

JUST THE GREATEST!!

Robert Thomas

Ate at the upstairs bar. Wine and food pairings were delicious. Cool vibe and right downtown. Shout-out to Bartender Sam... great guy!

Christopher Caddy

Great food! Great service from Seth behind the bar Monday night.

Herman Hernandez

The food and atmosphere was amazing. The osso bucco tasted exactly like what I had while I was in italy.

Wayne Semprini

Only two words describe Massimo's - THE BEST.

Rachel Goyette

...and then some! Creative cooking, wonderful staff. Delicious! Refreshing!

Cathy Smith

Wonderful dining experience. Everything was perfection. The food was fresh and delicious, the staff was friendly and attentive. Highly recommend.

A B

One of the most romantic and best tasting Italian restaurants in the world downstairs. Hip yet swanky bar upstairs.

Shird Moore

great service and food went with a big group and they were very accommidating.

Tamara Stone-Snyder

Excellent food!

Jason Landry

When it comes to fine Italian dining in the seacoast, Ristorante Massimo in Portsmouth is top notch. My wife and I usually go there on special occasions. Last time we were in was on New Year'e Eve with a few friends. Massimo himself came around to all the tables to greet the guests. I took the waiter's suggestion on ordering the grilled bone-in veal chop. He said it was decadent––and it was. Make reservations well in advance and check out the menu online in advance.

Gary Couture

Don't know how it could be better.

Chelsea Chasse

Came in for restaurant week and was very satisfied . very good food

Bruce Ford

I dine in Portsmouth several times a month and without question the finest service and finest selections are here. You will not be disappointed.

Dennis Caponigro

Excellent can't wait to go back

Maria Leonardi

My family booked the private space in the restaurant for my bridal shower this past weekend - words can't describe how amazing the food and service was. The space is wonderful and intimate - perfect for our group of ~15. Not only the best restaurant in Portsmouth, but one of the best I've ever been to.

Zeb

Delicious food with plenty of options.

Denise Meyer

We come here every year for our Anniversary. Got engaged here in 2005. Food, service and atmosphere are spectacular. Always.

ron ceppetelli

Terrific service, atmosphere and environment. The best,is the food, exquisite!

Ian Shearman

I went to get a gift card for my sisters birthday. I didn't know they were closed on Sundays, but there was an employee in there, young blonde kid, so I walked up. I asked to get a $200 gift card, he stares at me blankly and shrugs, says they are closed. I'd expect that from a chain restaurant, but not a local high end restaurant.

Michael Kramer

Excellent food and service.

lawrence steigrad

December 12th 2018 had a fabulous meal for 4, my Veal chop was superb as was the Amarone and the service. Nice ambiance, not too loud. I am in the neighborhood once or twice a year and have always had a very nice dinner.
