After a long drive back from Virginia we decided we were stopping here for lunch. Wife and I had been here before but the rest of the group had not. For two people you can't beat the half bird for $15.50 that includes a half bird and two sides. Add on a third side and you have a full meal for two people for under $20. If you like spicy this is the place. If somebody doesn't this is the place. Without sauce the chicken is still amazing. If you want ask for sauce on the side to dip in. The chicken is amazing. The mashed potatoes are made in house and you can tell. The greens and pork, the mac and cheese, everything is amazing here and high quality for the prices. Also when those sauces say hot they mean hot. I go for the Hot sauce, which is not their hottest and it's enough to burn your mouth but the heat doesn't stick around forever, about a perfect heat. Next time I'm going for the Cluckin' Hot.

The chicken is not worth the hype. Tastes like rotisserie chicken that has been fried too long. The wait was terrible. Good luck finding seating. The cashier even joked about it.

They serve full size pieces of fried chicken glazed with General Tzo's sauce. It's amazing. The chicken is moist and tender, the breading crunchy and the sauce... Oh, the sauce! We also had chicken in hot sauce, and it was great as well. And while the chicken is the hero of the meal, the sides hold up their part without shame.

Evert about this place is great. I've never eaten anything there that wasn't delicious. My only complaint is that the Cluckin' Hot used to burn for a day and cause near blindness from tears, it just has a nice peppery flavor now. It tasted great, but wasn't as hot as it was. Still, I could not recommend it more. Vegetarian-friendliness: Good. They have a tofu biscuit and a couple of appetizers.

We visited Southern before a concert at Chafeitz last night. It was busy but the service was phenomenal, the employees were all extremely polite and efficient. The food was absolutely delicious, and we left full and happy. We will definitely go back.

The menu is simple yet covers all the basics. The service was fast and friendly. We didn't even wait 10 min before our food arrived hot and fresh! Staff checked in to ensure that we were satisfied. The serving sizes are perfect. I had the 2pc plate with 2 sides for $13. And was very happy and full.

Great chicken joint, everything there is good. But be aware that even their regular, unspiced, chicken actually has a little spice, a little heat to it. Maybe it's the oil they cook it in. Whatever it is probably one of America's great chicken joints. Note that this is Homestyle comfort food, not Cuisine with a Capital C. And I don't really think anybody Does it Better.

Amazing fried chicken, amazing flavors! When they say hot, they mean hot. Sides are great, seasoning is awesome on the chicken and Nashville hot chicken is my favorite. Seating there is rough, but overall great place.

Phenomenal. I’d always wanted to try Nashville style hot chicken and this place was great. I ordered the medium chicken which I found to be perfectly hot and perfectly flavorful. The fried pickles were delicious. Atmosphere, service, everything, fantastic. Well done.

Best fried catfish sandwich of my LIFE! Slaw was amazing - sweet but not drowned out so it tastes fresh. You can taste the fish through the batter and it was the best batter I’ve ever had on fish. The balance of this sandwich was something I will dream about for years. Please eat here.

Honestly tried and wanted to enjoy my meal. But, unfortunately neither of us were able to. The greens tasted like vinegar, the macaroni like wax, and the fish just had no flavor at all. My husband simply said the chicken isn't good. This was a waste of $ for us, because we ended up throwing everything in the trash. I truly wish this was a better review.

Got a piece of breast, thigh, wing and drumstick each, plus southern greens and fries+sauce. The mild is pretty darn hot if you do not like spicy food. Chicken was hot and delicious. I do not like the southern greens but I needed another sample to know what they *should* taste like. Fries+sauce was good as well, but felt full after 4 pieces of chicken. Would have picked different sides so I could call my meal exceeding expectation, but chicken itself was amazing. Staff was friendly. Place was clean. 5*.

Good spicy chicken. Setup is much like Pappy's next door. Line up, order and pay, then find a seat and they'll bring the food. Both places can have intimidating lines at times, but it's worth it. Line moves pretty well. Allow for this.

Food was good. A few minor tweaks and would be great. If you're in the area it's worth a visit. The descriptions of the spice level are a little more intense than the heat so dont be scared.

Went in at 2pm on a Sunday afternoon. 12 tables and a sign saying there will be a table for you after you order. We ended up sitting 3 people at a table for 2. 1/2 the tables either had people sitting at them that had carry out orders because they weren't utilizing the bench seat to wait for their food. Watched several people sit at tables while the rest of their party was in line or not their leaving no tables for people who had already ordered. Waited 45 minutes for our food. Three of the soda flavors were running clear and their was no ice. We had a 20 minute wait to order. Shares a parking lot with Pappys bbq, so parking is limited. Chicken was just all right. Fries have a spicy seasoning on them, so my son wasn't able to eat. Fries are all they had that he likes. Gooey butter cake was good, so was the mac n cheese and greens. Wont go back because of thing listed. We thought it was over rated. If you want good fried chicken go to Gus's or king Edwards.

Outstanding fried chicken and everybody knows it. Not a lot of seating, but the employees do their best to maximize the table space. Chicken is spiced to order and spicy is genuinely spicy. I tried the deviled eggs and they are fantastic. Get in early for lunch or plan on take out.

The food at Southern was outstanding. We visited on Saturday, July 27, 2019. I would even say it is better than Nashville's hot chicken! The line went through quickly. I ordered the 4 piece chicken tenders with original seasoning which tasted amazing! It came with 2 sides, and I chose fries and mashed potatoes with brown gravy. I am normally not very impressed with fries, but Sothern's fries were so good! They were crinkle cut and had a wonderful seasoning to them. I loved that you could choose white or brown gravy for the mashed potatoes which were also super tasty. Everything was hot, and the staff was super friendly. The only thing that I wish was better is their homemade lemonade. It wasn't very good or cold, but the food was outstanding so it outweighs that by far!

I really liked their Nashville hot chicken. Very crispy and juicy with a fair amount of heat for the hottest one. I had the 2 piece white meat and fries- both were very good. I like the deviled eggs as well, but some may not like the stronger mustard taste.

I've only been living in St. Louis for a year now and this is definitely one of my top three favorite restaurants. I've only had the hot chicken and they have never disappointed. Not brave enough for clucking hot but I always get medium or hot!

They were insanely busy but we felt like we went through quickly! They have the mechanics down to be successful during busy times. The food-SO GOOD! All was above expectations (except the mashed potatoes-not our taste). The atmosphere was nice and we would definitely go back. We wished our stomachs were able to fit more food in so we could keep eating the delicious chicken!

As southern as southern gets. I will have to be honest and say that the hot chicken may not quite compare to the Nashville joints but it is close and still delicious. The catfish is on point and some of the best I have had. I have tried some top named nationwide catfish joints and southern has some of the absolute best in my opinion. Their greens were on point and have that hint of southern vinegary goodness. We were graced with a biscuit for some reason I can't recall and it was surprisingly large and delicious. The honey butter is a great pairing. Their homemade deserts are fantastic. Chef Cole will not let you down. Just look for the lines of people you won't be disappointed.

This place was awesome! I came here in the evening and it was relatively packed however it has the classic BBQ counter style ordering so by the time you order, you should have a seat. The place itself has a pretty casual atmosphere. Onto the food, the fried chicken was pretty damn good (and I have been in the South for quite a bit of time). I got the three piece dark chicken meal with mashed potatoes and mac and cheese which cost around $12 bucks with tax if I remember correctly. The chicken was juicy on the inside (not dry like some places) and cooked in a pretty tasteful batter on the medium spicy level (which was pretty spicy coming from someone who usually eats mild at Thai places, if that is a good comparison). It was also not overfried which I really liked. The mashed potatoes were also good- smooth texture with some chunks of potato and a pretty tasteful gravy (it wasn't too thick which I liked given the dense chicken). The mac and cheese on the other hand could be improved as really the cheese was somewhat bland. Overall, great experience and I will definitely return.

Love their food. Went there for the first time 3 months ago and have already been at least 5-10 times. However, they really struggle with getting orders right. Especially when it comes to specializations like sauce on the side or no gravy. Only once has everyone in my group gotten all correct orders. Five stars if it weren't for this.

You're going to want to eat everything at Southern. Their chicken is top notch (possibly the best in STL), their mac and cheese is definitely the best in STL and those buttermilk biscuits are heavenly. All around we had a great experience with service and our food came out quickly! I will definitely be back for another half chicken soon!

We really liked the chicken here. The chicken tender special was only $6.50 for two tenders, a side, and a drink. We were very full by the end of the meal. I got the hot tenders, and they were just spicy enough to be tasty but not too hot to enjoy. The general tsos chicken tenders my friend got were tasty as well. All of the sides we got were delicious. We would definitely go back here.

Solid chicken! First time going last week and I got the Hot Chicken Biscuit, Hot (which is the second hottest on the scale out of 6). Chicken and fries were so good. Fried pickles weren't bad either. The biscuit was a little much though. It overwhelmed the sandwich entirely, and promptly fell apart. I ended up eating a sandwich salad where the bread acted as lettuce. Still very good. Will probably get the Fire Bird next time, absolutely going back.
