TL;DR: If you want amazing American home cooking while on the road or hanging out in Wiggins, this is the place to go. Amazing service, simple, but well seasoned food, fresh ingredients, and an old-school atmosphere.
Even after 5 years of going to school around and through the Wiggins/Hattiesburg area, I never actually took the time to stop off at Sawmill. But, after a tiring morning up north, I had to eat something on my way back to the Coast.
After seating myself and getting my soda, I decided to check out the salad bar to start. Simple, fresh ingredients all available with small teakwood bowls like your grandmother used to have. A nice touch for a simple opening.
The buffet is classic American/Cajun fare. Gumbo, red beans and rice, greens, corn on the cob, baked beans and mashed potatoes/gravy all nicely seasoned and well made. For the main dishes, the fried foods like catfish, shrimp, chicken, and hushpuppies are all crispy, juicy, and fluffy, without excess grease or sogginess. The BBQ chicken is super tasty and well worth a try. They even have simple baked or "sticky" chicken when you need to avoid the breading but still want that burst of flavor that will make you want seconds and thirds. Deserts are simple homemade cakes and puddings, but all well crafted, but not flashy; a hidden surprise.
The servers and wait staff are all locals who really take care of the place, amazingly polite, always keeping the place clean and making sure everyone stays topped off and comfortable. And this buffet is more affordable than even the nicest Golden Coral or Ryan's. All in all, a perfect experience that encapsulates what's so amazing about the Deep South; great food, good times, and wonderful people.
