Food was spicy and pricey. Greens had a vinegary taste that was strange. Chicken was ok. 3 out of 5 stars. Too spicy - an unexpected. Unless that's your thing. Had to drink a lot of water. Okra, mac 'n cheese was fine. Walk up steps or long ramp on side of bldg. Plenty spacious on inside. Cashier handled money from her purse, the touched outside of to-go food containers. Would have preferred her wash or sanitize her hands first. Pleasant hospitality.

Gus’s is now one of my favorite restaurants in Knoxville! I was really impressed with the food and the fact that they serve pie! I am discouraged by the fact that very few restaurants serve pie. Our server, Amy, was nothing short of amazing. She was attentive, charismatic, and personable. I will definitely be coming back to see Amy again but will avoid the other manager Kim. I gathered that was her name based on how she shouted it across the restaurant multiple times. I could not carry on a conversation with my boyfriend because this woman was yelling like a banchy in heat. I can’t imagine working with her. Seriously, they all should be given a raise. That woman is intolerable. I would fire her immediately. Great place otherwise!! :)

In the past few years, there have been "fried chicken wars" going on in STL. When you take all the factors (quality of the chicken, friendliness of the service, ambiance, etc.) into consideration, Gus's wins, hands down. Gus's is a chain--not everywhere in the U.S. but in a lot of locations. And they're consistent in all their stores. They're based in Georgia, so they have a decidedly Southern accent to their food: spicy chicken, fried okra, and they even have excellent pies for dessert if you're not too full. In summary, if you have a hankerin' for frahd chicken...Gus's.

Fried chicken aficionados: Go! I ordered a half chicken, and was very pleased with the food. The chicken itself was cooked perfectly, which justified the higher price since Is very hungry. Still moist, and pulled from the fryer at just the right time. That cook knows. The recipe was as described, spicy and hot, but the heat stayed on the food, wasn't burny on the way down. The breading has a well blended flavor, an interesting taste. Same goes for their baked beans, it was not something you get around here. My waitress was pleasant, and did her job well. I think the price is a couple bucks too much. Gus's has a good vibe. I'll go back.

We ate at the Maplewood Mo location today. Service was absolutely terrible. Waited over an hour for our food. Beans and fries were cold. Had to ask for utensils and refills on drinks several times. Asked for ranch dressing and never got it, had to go up and get it ourself. Our waitress was not enthused in the least to wait on us. Chicken was hot and good. Party of 7.

This really is a nice place. The staff and the atmosphere is usually great. The chicken is good and most of the sides are too. Only reason for the 4 is I’m just not always satisfied when I leave. The kids don’t seem to finish their food and it gets pricey feeding 4 people. To me a fried chicken meal for 4 shouldn’t be over $25-30. Go check it out. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

Good food, good service. To those who haven't been before, the chicken has a decent spiciness to it. My order came out quickly, fresh (as it was lava hot). The manager quickly rectified an issue I had when the Hooked (app) coupon I mentioned for 25% off wasn't applied, so bonus points for fixing it quickly and satisfactorily. Will be back.

This is everything I wanted in a meal and dining experience. Service was fast and friendly, place was simple but updated and clean with lots to look at on the walls, and the food was ahhhhhhh-mazing. I’m going to be thinking of that fried chicken for a long time. The chicken breasts were nice and crispy but still soo moist and juicy inside. And the chicken tenders were amazing as well. Whatever they do with the chicken here is magic. Sides are great too - baked beans, cole slaw, and mac and cheese were all top notch. Will definitely be back!

Very disappointing. Worst fried chicken I've ever had. It was overcooked, so it tasted burnt and the outside was chewy and tough, the inside was dry. Not spicy at all. The mac and cheese tasted just like Kraft with some shredded cheese added on top, and the baked beans tasted like they were from a can with ketchup added to them. The greens and the fried okra were good, and the server was very friendly, which is the only reason it got two stars. I wish I'd just gotten KFC, their chicken is much better for much cheaper.

I thought i'd stop by and give Gus's a shot, just like everyone else I had heard so much about them. I must say that the chicken was great! Their spicy seasoning is one of a kind, and their chicken came out piping hot! They have some great chicken, but the prices are great as well.

Wow! That chicken was on fire! So good I ate 4 pieces! Everything about this comfort food restaurant is good. From the down to earth service to their chocolate chess pie. Go for the chicken but stay for the side items and sweet tea. I'll tell everyone I know after that meal. It's heavy food so go hungry.

I guess the lady is a manger. She is very loud. As we walked in everyone greeted us which was nice. But the hole time we were there we had to listen to her tell the worker how to clean. Could not enjoy the music and the people I was with. It was like we came to she perform. She should be quite and stop trying to be seen. The food was OK.. Our waiters was very nice, and good at her job. But we will not be back. Your manager was way to loud. We know how to clean up if nothing else.

Good chicken, worst and slowest service I've experienced in years in a restaurant. Came on a slow Wednesday night (party of 7), with only two other parties waiting for service when we came in. Waitress took forever to get around to taking our order (at least 20 minutes) after greeting us as she was hanging out chatting with other staff. It took over a hour to get served our food. We watched some of it get plated and sit for 20 minutes while the rest was cooked. Sloooowwwwly cooked. All orders, not surprisingly, were for some form of fried chicken, so they could have been cooked together. But they weren't - that's too easy - they were cooked separately! (Open kitchen so you can watch). The chicken was tasty after all that time and effort, but the sides were a mixed bag. Some meals came out hot. Some meals came out cold to the touch. Two were sent back, and those took an additional 30 minutes to come back out. Buddy, chicken just ain't that hard to cook! The waitress blamed the cook staff, but she bore some responsibility. It even took a long time to get the check (with mandatory 18% tip!!!) after pointedly asking for it. Frankly, I wouldn't have bothered to post a review until I saw the 18% tip on my bill for clearly bad service. We arrived at 6 pm, left at 7:30 taking the reheated meals to go. Other parties were waiting a long time too. Last time I ate at Gus's in Memphis, it might have taken 15 minutes to get served after the order in a packed restaurant. The chicken is good, but the Oxford branch needs serious help.

Gus's is by far the best chicken. Always made fresh and comes out hot and juicy. I have been to the one in Memphis and now Knoxville, close your eyes and you can't tell the difference. That is the way it should be. Many sides to have and all just as good, Mac & cheese, beans, slaw, and fries. Chicken was just ok. We got there pretty early in the evening, about 5:30 and they were out of breast meat, seriously? I also hated the fact that everything is disposable, what a waste of plastic. I try to limit my use of plastic, even the promotional cups are plastic. Try washing some dishes instead.

on my visit to Gus's during the weekday dinner rush, service was fast and the food plenty hot. As for people coming in and expecting a super spicy chicken? Not really but is quite flavorful and great crispy skin. Some places use a crunchy thick breading but not Gus's! Gus's uses a thin slurry batter that disguises NOTHING but great flavor. I can't speak to off hours or lunch time issues some have reported as my experience was quite favorable and plan on going back!

For the reason most of you are here...how's the food? Pretty good to be honest! The reason for 3 stars is based solely on service and atmosphere. My server was quick and could really care less about me. As for the atmosphere, the restaurant was clean but for some reason I could hear every conversation among the staff in detail because they were loud...really loud. Definitely not what I wanted to hear after a long day of work. I'll definitely get my order to go next time.

Ordered 20 piece chicken and coleslaw. In the past we have raved about how good of a meal it was. Sadly this time we were very disappointed. We received about 8 pieces of chicken and the rest were chicken tenders that were cooked so long they could bend without breaking. The coleslaw also has so much water I had to drain it before eating. Not to mention my husband found a hair as well.

What happened to this place? We were excited to grab a bite while we were in town, but neither of us finished our meal. I'm now feeling a bit queasy. Is this location under new management? Have the recipes changed? The okra and mac and cheese were completely bland, and tenders were dry. So disappointed. NEVER eating Gus's again unless I'm in Memphis. Definitely NOT spicy at all. It is basic fried chicken minus the spicy. The staff was friendly however they move so quickly, we couldn't really connect with them. The food was served fresh which makes it hot. The fried okra were really good. The mac & cheese was ok (Velveeta). The lemonade is koolaid brand and sweet tea were all sugar water. No real character to the food. We were looking for TN hot and spicy chicken and ended up with basic home cooked kitchen fried chicken. So, if you are looking for TN spicy, hot chicken, this is NOT the place.

This place is absolutely incredible. I wish I could give it 4.5 stars due to the price, but I could not get myself to take away a whole star for this reason. The food is incredibly fresh and delicious, and they manage to make the chicken and other items unique as well. I highly recommend the fried pickles, they are among the best I have ever had. Everything fried is made to order, so if you are ordering take-away be sure to call in 15 minutes ahead of time at least.

We are gonna try it for the first time, looks and smells amazing... cant wait.... ****UPDATE**** IF you haven't been here, u must go... we had fried pickle spears with ranch as appetizer, the breading is phenomenal, has a bit of a kick to it. Hubby doesn't care for fried pickles, but he loved them at Gus'.. I had the 2 Breast and a wing fried chicken plate with mac n cheese and coleslaw, it is the best chicken I've ever had .. spicier than expected, but i love spice... the mac was creamy and very cheesy, also some if the best mac I've had, same for the coleslaw, a little creamier than I prefer.. but it was soo good.. we will be back, and on a positive note it's not far from where my job is moving to in May... yay... I'm definitely trying the catfish next time.... OH and u can keep the cups as souvenirs... Stasia was our waitress and she was awesome.. everyone was friendly and the bathrooms were very clean....

That being said, I cannot express how good this chicken was. Everything about it - from the side dishes, to the sweet tea, to the service we received - was honestly amazing. The chicken was so juicy and soft and fall off the bone. I was hoping it wouldn't live up to expectations because my friends would literally annoy me with it, but holy moly it was so good. If you're from out of town or up north and you're looking for great southern fried chicken and hospitality, you should make the stop here

The chicken was tasty and fresh the sides were good and the man who took my order was very nice. I was unhappy however with the lack of transparency in their prices. I always check the menu before trying a new place so I went on their website and looked it up....there were no prices. Despite this I went anyway expecting it not to be cheap as I know chicken is more expensive. When I checked the menu I was SHOCKED! Who pays almost 18 dollars for 8 pieces of chicken? Not me.... The chicken is good but not AT ALL worth the price. You will find me using my coupons at Popeyes from now on.

Gus’s World Famous, Fried Chicken and Catfish My server was Melinda; she made sure my order of catfish was hot and fresh. Melinda brought out my order of catfish with mac and cheese within 10 minutes. She asked me, if I wanted to try fried chicken as well. And I said yes, so I had 2 piece white meat breast and wing fried chicken. The fries chicken on white bread was good. But Gus’s Fried Catfish, was the best fried fish I ever had. Each Catfish was $3.00 a piece; I wanted to order a dozen to take home.

So glad we found this hidden gem! The chicken is delicious, crispy and not very spicy at all. The baked beans and cole slaw are flavorful and tasty. We had to wait a few minutes for a table (Sunday noon with lots of families) but very much worth it! Service is friendly and attentive. Good prices. An excellent experience all around

I’m giving them 3 stars because the food is not consistent and the sides are terrible. They also have an up charge on sides except for cole slaw and beans. The chicken is good but there inconsistent with the size of the chicken. The origal spot which is down south is way better!! Owner needs to make some changes please. I lived in Memphis for years and Gus's was one of my favorite restaurants we ate lunch there on a regular basis. Their chicken was spicy and crispy. When you bit into it you could see the seasoning in the meat almost like it was injected? This chicken isn't spicy at all, it is crispy though. There is a corporate chicken restaurant that has better chicken at half the cost. I'm giving one star in the hope that they will fix this and respond to my review. I would love to be able to get spicy chicken at this end of the state.

Typically I have a great experience here. Today was not that! I walked out!!!! I stood at the register to place a carry out order for about 15min. No one said hello to me, no one said ,”it’ll be a moment”, nobody said anything! It’s so rude to treat a customer that way. Every other time was great! Service was as nice and friendly as you would want it. As far as hot chicken in Tennessee goes, this was good! Perfect heat that was both flavorful and spicy, and my white meat was surprisingly juicy. Add a bit of lemon and voila. Mac n' cheese was so good. Greens were regular, and so were the beans.

Shared a 16 piece dark set with 3 other hungry people and still had leftovers! Loved the subtle spice and flavor. Not as crunchy as I wanted, but their flavor and tenderness was incredible! Would definitely come back and get some of this chicken! However, we got put on hold on the phone and waited for 5 minutes before hanging up and calling back only to have someone help us right away. This place is b-u-s-y understandably so we got this to go and enjoyed it at home.

Gus's Famous Fried Chicken serves probably the best chicken in town. If you like spicy chicken, this is the place to go. For appetizers, we get the fried green tomatoes or fried okra. Even when the place is full, it isn't crowded, and there's outdoor seating, so you never have people you don't know bumping into you while you're trying to eat. This is a plus.

Just ok. The service was good. Chicken is maybe marinated before frying. It had a red tint under the skin and on the meat. It just isn't what I personally think of when I want fried chicken. I also didn't care too much for the sides selection. Coleslaw was creamy but just didn't have much flavor. I ordered French fries since they don't offer mash.

I heard about the chicken here. So i guess it is famous, lol. I stopped in for 1 tender to go because i had a huge meal replacement smoothie. First off EVERYONE is very friendly. The staffs positivity really rubbed off on me. I felt so welcomed and excited to eat this 1 tender. They were right.... I did wamt more even though I was stuffed. Will certainly reccomend this place to my bar guests at the hotel I work at when they are looking for great fried chicken. Its worth the drive from downtown.

Sorry to say. There is nothing like world famous here. We waited 15 mins expecting the chicken to be fresh. As much as I know about fried chicken it appeared that that the chicken was refried . There was tons of grease on it and was Chevy. Not the characteristics of fresh fried chicken . Okra was good and fresh as it appeared freshly fried and tasted fresh . It says hot and spicy. Didn't feel any spice. Not a worth for the over priced place

The waiter saved this rating from being 3 stars. The chicken was good, but the sweet potato pie was EXCELLENT. My complaint (or their opportunity) is that if I tell you that someone on my group (specifically my son) had an allergy and ask you if something has dairy in it (for example the batter for the fried pickles), don't reply with "it's a family recipe...the batter comes in a white bag." That's not going to cut it. Simply act concern then either say I don't know and/or can check on it for you. The waiter was sympathetic though. He apologized on the supervisor's behalf.

Chicken was undercooked but the skin was overcooked. That means the grease temp was too high and old. I was thoroughly disgusted. When I mentioned it at the cashout counter the waiter brushed of with some stupid cookiecutter response, something about cooking temperature. The chicken here is to die for. A bit big for just one person, which is not a horrible problem, but the flavor is savory and southern flare at its best. Went there with a group of friends in the fall and should have posted this review sooner. The restaurant was busy and noisy. One of the pieces of fried chicken I tore into was raw in the center. The wait staff was far too busy to be bothered. One member of our group disliked their meal so much they did not eat. I wish I had taken their cue because I was so sick after eating there and for the next day, it wasn't worth the effort.

Went here with a fellow group of journalism acquaintances. I went here last year when it was on the square and again this year at the location right outside the square when they moved. First off, the chicken is decent at best. Also they ran out of chicken tenders and chicken wings when I went, and it’s a chicken place! We even called in a week ahead of time. Their side items are mediocre, but don’t order fried pickle spears. They are horrible. Want some chicken? Go to Abners, heck go to KFC. Just not here.

Fried tomatoes weren't the best I've ever had and the fries were ehhh. But the chicken was excellent, cooked perfectly, nice crunch with a spicy kick but not too over powering. The okra was fresh and crisp not mushy. My husband said the coleslaw was on point. The homemade pies are amazing. We tried the pecan and the coconut and they did not disappoint. I went to Gus's in Memphis and the Saint Louis, MO location provided the same yummy experience when it came to their chicken and side dishes. However, this was my first time ordering a catfish/chicken combo meal and their catfish was "eeeeehh." I'm still giving this restaurant 5 stars, they just step need to step their catfish game up.

Just had a fried chicken experience! Best fried chicken I’ve had in a long time. When they mean hot chicken, they mean it’s made to order, not some pieces laying around under a heat lamp. While some customers will say this chicken is “hot”, I would say its “spicy”, but everyone has their own tolerance. As opposed to a “Nashville” type hot chicken, it’s pretty tame. If you’re not used to a little heat on your chicken, you will notice it. The color and texture of the skin is amazing and the breast I had was very juicy. Sides of Mac & cheese and fried okra were also very good. Good beer list too. Pro Tip: for dessert, get a slice of pecan pie with vanilla ice cream on separate plates. Make sure to have the pie heated! Our server Kim recommended it and it was a perfect finish to lunch. She was great and you could tell she enjoyed her job and customers. Thanks Kim! We’ll be back soon.

The best fried chicken I have ever had. I don't like fried food. Apparently Gus's Fried Chicken made a liar out of me. I eat their chicken at least once a week. The fried pickles are amazing as well. The sweet tea falls from the heavens. Can't get enough of it. Almost forgot the mac & cheese. So delicious. The atmosphere and decor is fantastic. One of these days I'm going to pass on the chicken and try their catfish. I find it very difficult though to pass on the chicken. LOL!

Fantastic! Best fried chicken I have had since my grandma passed away. Highly recommended! 3pc white was perfectly cooked, fresh and hot. Fried okra was on point and they sprinkle a little chicken seasoning on the mac n cheese to take it up a couple notches. Fast and super friendly service, cant say enough good things. GO THERE - you will NOT be disappointed!!!

I have never eaten here but I googled great fried chicken near me and this place showed promising... However, I noticed it had spicy chicken and wanted to know if they had unspicy or how hot the spicy is so I called a little after 7pm on March 13, 2019 and a gentleman answered and asked if I could hold. I said yes but almost 30 minutes later I decided to call it quits and hang up... Ended up going to Bojangles. This place does sound good. hope I can try it one day.

The "world famous" moniker, while it sounds a bit silly, is justified in my opinion. This chicken was fantastic, and is probably the best fried chicken I've ever gotten a chance to try. I had their 4 tender plate, which comes with beans, slaw, a dip, and a piece of white bread, all for $11. The portion was very generous, and the chicken itself had a delicious, crispy, flavorful coating with just the right amount of spice. Along with the food being great, the service at this location was exceptional. All in all, such a terrific place that I would strongly recommend to anyone. Chicken doesn't get much better than this.

Literally the best service ever! Great food, too! There's been mention of spice in the chicken. I was disappointed that mine was not spicy but my friend was sweating bullets. Found out later the tenders are not as spicy. I will be back to try the bone-in chicken. The Mac and cheese is super and apparently quite popular. If they're busy you might have to wait for the Mac.

When I walked in, there was only 1 couple dinning in on a Wednesday around 7 pm. I ordered the chicken tenders and an 8 pc white meat meal. The chicken tenders skin was sooo dry, but the inside tasted like it came off the bone (I get tenders because I don't like how bone in chicken tastes). Some of the fries had seasoning and some didn't. The slaw was okay though, definitely not worth $40. KFC would have been better and cheaper.

I really enjoyed my visit at Gus's World Famous Chicken! I have always wanted to try it but for some reason it took me long enough! I definitely wish I hadn't waited! I loved the cute/casual environment. It wasn't anything fancy but it doesn't need to be. The manager had been walking around to all of the tables making sure they had what they needed or just made sure everything was tasting alright. He came around my table twice! The waitress was sweet and kept my drink topped off. Now to the chicken, the name and sign says it all! It was delicious!!! I was expecting a normal plate of fried chicken but no... I received a plate with chicken that had a kick to it! It wasn't too spicy but, it had a particular flare to it. I also love french fries. At Gus's, their fries were perf! Not too soggy and not too crunchy! Highly recommend going to Gus's because I know I'll be there again soon!

My S.O. and I came to this place after having quite a few bad restaurant experiences. We just wanted some edible food. Let me tell you, we got WAY more than we bargained for in the best of ways. Chicken was so flavorful and had lots of crunchy skins. Just the right amount of spice. I atmosphere was pretty and inviting. Service was top notch. Just a great experience all around. The only reason you wont see me there more often is because no one needs fried chicken everyday. But I’m always tempted...

Daughter took me here , to be brought my wife and two friends and her back and I live 1hr 30 mins away. Best chicken I’ve ever had and folks my wife cooks the second best. It’s got a little kick to it but very very good. I could eat just the crust and be happy but woah wait a minute the flavor and juicy moisture in the chicken itself , oh yeah. When I’m in Knoxville I’ll stop in and sometimes when I’m just craving it I’ll go. Worth it to me, even my Mother in law loved it. Mother in Law approved = 5
