Get the juicy Lucy, otherwise your wasting your visit. It’s awesome. Fries are good. Baskets are good to share amount 2-3 people. Would go back and would recommend to others.

The best Juicy Lucy in Minnesota. Fresh patties are used, not frozen ones like 5-8 club which makes a difference in taste. Otherwise, typical bar fare which is also good, and a decent local beer selection. The only downside is that they are often crowded due to their popularity, so come during off hours to be seated quickly (11am, 2-4:30 pm).

Didn't dine in as I was just on a travel stop but picked up to-go per a friend's recommendation. She wasn't wrong either as the Juicy Lucy ran circles around Cadillac Ranch's...which was the only one I'm able to compare it to unfortunately. The fries were good...the right amount of grease and a sizable portion for the price. Next time I'm in the TC I'm definitely coming back, and hopefully can spend the evening.

Been here several times now before deciding to submit a review. Entirely average food. Ambiance is dive bar. What isn't making it for me is having to wait for seating, having to wait for average food and the servers always trying to hustle you out so they can turn the table.

Home of the "Jucy Lucy," a well-done burger stuffed with cheese and served with pickles and onion. The burger does have its charm, but the main reason to come here is for the experience. Matt's is an old-fashioned cash only dive bar that struck gold with its claim to fame burger. Be prepared to wait in line.

It was good, but best burger in Minneapolis is pushing it. Simple, no thrills, posted the menu, cash only. Burgers taste like fried onions regardless if you get them on it or not. Great burger, I'd suggest your first bite into a jucy Lucy be a nibble or the cheese will squirt out. My wife took a big bite and squirted cheese all over. We got fries as well, they were tasty but they are a very thin cut fry which I don't care for. Expect a wait, but that's a great time to enjoy a beer.

Difficult to get to, no parking, long line, long wait, DEFINETLY worth it. Servers were't exactly friendly but this isn't Denny's. It's a dive bar. Bring cash. It's easily one of the best burgers I've ever had. People say they're over-priced. It's $7-something for a 1/2 pound burger. They could easily charge double and still have a line going out the door. That 20 or so minutes of me sitting on a bar stool with my Jucy Lucy and a Grain Belt in front of me was one of the highlights of Minneapolis.

This place was ok. The food was good and the guy on the grill is a burger ninja. Much credit to him. That said, my waitress was rude and snobby. Acting like she was doing us a favor by us being there. I didn't like or appreciate her attitude. She did get better once she saw my ID and noticed I was from out of state. Too little too late for me. I hope she's not that way with all the locals. The food is a 4 out of 5 stars and waitress is a 1 out of 5. I dont think this place was worth the wait to be seated but food was good. As a traveler I tried 5-8 club and we both agreed they had better burgers(bigger too).

Not a terrible place. Burgers are well done and crispy. Beers aren't super expensive, but for the scene and the location, a bit pricey relative to what you'd typically expect from a dive bar. Also, they're cooking burgers and fries behind the bar, so your clothes will smell like fried stuff...especially if you're sitting next to the bar.

They have an ATM but who wants to pay those fees. Make sure to wait your turn in line, it's worth it even if the line is a bit long. I'm from Chicago and if you're looking to just try a Jucy Lucy like me, this is a decent one to try. I'm not a fan of it, I'd rather get the Parlour burger (which is the best burger in MN), but it's still a good burger - it's just weird to have molten lava cheese spilling out of your burger after you bite. Fries are okay - can easily share a full order with probably 4 people. It seems to always be packed and cramped, so go here as early as you can. Service is okay - pretty good for 3-4 people running the whole place. I don't get why MN people love Jucy Lucy's so much, but I recommend getting a burger somewhere else, otherwise if you're dying to try a Jucy Lucy, this is a decent place to go. Take out might be a better option. Oh and it's cash only.

Excellent jucy lucy; super simple, but really well executed. Definitely get it with onions--doesn't even need condiments. It was very busy on the Saturday when we were there, so be prepared to wait for a table and for your food. Don't worry, it's worth the wait. The wait staff is fast and polite as well. There will probably be wait to sit at a table but it's worth it. When they say the cheese is hot they are NOT joking. Order a full order of fries for 2 people. You will really enjoy devouring the fries while your unwrapped burger is cooling down. Still be careful when you finally bite in to your burger, the cheese is still really hot. Order a #Summit #EPA to go with your meal, it's a great combination. Remember you are here for good food and the experience. There is one person cooking and one person on the floor. It might take a few minutes but your patience will be rewarded. Sorry I didnt take pictures of my food. I dug in and had dirty hands so fast I forgot.

Not worth the 2 hour wait. After many years of going to the 5-8, I finally gave Matt's a try. First thing first, they don't take card but have an atm but it's at the back of the restaurant, in which you have to jump over people and tables to get to it. The line was out the door so I expected the burgers to be good but I was wrong. My burger was small than I expected and the meat was dry and burnt. The restaurant is VERY small and dark but you can't do anything about that since it's an old building. I am definitely sticking to the 5-8 from now on.

I did my research, this was the place to go. Got there 10 mins before opening. Got right in and was seated. Good service. But the burger, honestly, did not impress me. I think my expectations were maybe too high? I wanted thick orange cheese volcano-ing and oozing out of my burger. Got some off-white, greasy looking stuff instead. The taste was fine, but overall not what I expected. I didn't have a bad experience, just not what I was looking forward to.

The absolute best juicy lucy is here, while the war rages on about who made it first, 5-8 club or Matt's, Matt's wins hands down. The juicy lucy at 5-8 is a little more creative, but the cheese is always exploded out when I go. This has never happened at Matt's. Went on a monday afternoon around 2:30. We had to wait about 15 minutes. Juicy Lucy's were awesome. (wish they were bigger) My 4 year old had cheesebuger which was awesome. All 4 of us able to split one order of fries. Glad we went! .

I live a few blocks away but haven’t been here in like 20 years... but I came in while my truck was being fixed nearby the other day. I’m a vegetarian and the grilled cheese and fries were good & my brother enjoyed his JL... but the service here is nothing to rave about- you feel rushed to order & rushed to leave (getting the check before you can have another drink). However it’s a classic establishment & always busy, so it’s understandable. Decent but I prefer the Cardinal or Bullshorn for service, food & a better dive experience in south Minneapolis.

I grew up in MN, and yet I had never been to the famous birth place of the juicy Lucy. I am so glad I took the trip while visiting family. I was missing out. These burgers have such a classic burger taste, it's everything you'd want in a good old reliable burger. The fries are everything I'd ask for. They're crispy, but soft inside, warm, and perfectly salted. This place has such a homey feel-good vibe. Make sure you try this place, you won't regret it.

This is one of those rare places that providing overall mediocrity in food and generally poor customer service seems to play in their favor and create lore of a “must have experience.” In reality, the operators are just shrewd in business practice and strive to extract the highest profits from their customers. The burger is good, but there are much better at several places in town. This is my own hang up, but any business today that doesn’t take a credit card is simply providing poor customer service. Matt’s can increase their prices by 5% to cover credit card fees and actually increase their profit, and provide a better customer experience. That’s a bettet option as a customer rather than the ATM fee I had to pay for the privilege of eating there. I will look forward to coming back when they join the 21st century by taking credit cards, and maybe upgrade the napkins so I can enjoy the Juicy Lucy without needing a shower afterward.

Over the past 65 years Matt's has been the place where the family congregates after a wedding, funeral, reunion, or the like. over 15 - 20 years that some of us were not in the state, we schedule our flights around the grill close time. Matt's is my absolute favorite place to eat, and you will never find a proper Jucy Lucy anywhere else. The original is always the best! :-)

Not over hyped at all. Great well-seasoned burger, abundant classic fries, and busy bar atmosphere with way fewer seats than needed to meet the demand. FYI, the burgers come without condiments (don't need any) but with onions and pickles. It's perfection.

The experience from one hamburger called "Juicy Lucy" made me feel as if all my best efforts to experience hamburgers were for nothing. After that moment and my fist bite, I had to realize that I've never had a hamburger before. This has forever changed that I have eaten meat but have NEVER had a hamburger until that moment.

Matt's is a Minneapolis institution for a good reason. They serve a fantastic no-frills Lucy (unless fried or raw onions counts as a frill) wrapped in paper and oversize helpings of fries in a paper lined basket. No plates, no utensils, no pretense. Wash it down with a beer (a small, but well-chosen selection of craft beers and standard big-brewery lagers are available). You would call the aesthetic "dive bar" if it wasn't for the steady stream of customers of all ages and walks of life ... It's more of community space in that regard. A customer who returns after a 20 year absence would be hard pressed to detect any changes, except the picture on the wall of a smiling Obama posing with Matt's staff. Bring cash (ATM is on site, if needed). Mind the warnings about molten cheese. Scratch your itch for a perfectly simple Jucy Lucy... Ok, THE Jucy Lucy.

Iconic, as a Floridian its always important to visit Matts everytime I visit. Jucy Lucys made right infront of you, atmosphere is my favorite part. I'd recommend to anyone looking for a twist on a classic burger, definitely worth going out of the way for it.

This is a Family tradition! We have been going there for 59 years! Even as toddlers, a parent would take us for a treat! In fact I met up with my Son at the airport, headed straight to the hotel to check in then off to Matt's!!! He flew in from Oregon, I flew in from California. You can't go wrong with a Burger or Juicy Lucy !!! Even though they changed the burger recipe when Matt Bristol retired which we loved but we got used to the new recipe!!! Their still awesome! ❤

I feel it's over priced for the amount of food you get a burger with cheese inside of it is $7.75 and it was small I expected it to be much bigger for a Juicy Lucy and you only get pickles and onions with it. For the price i paid for a burger and 1/2 order of fries I could have gone to Denny's or Perkins and gotten more burger and toppings for less. So disappointed

Good price. Excellent burger. Only issue is the line up. Only thing is cash only. And if u really want to be smart, unless you have to sit there, order it to go. It will take 20 some minutes still but it beats lining up and still have to wait an additional 20 mins or 30 mins for your food. Just be very careful if you're going to eat in the car. I tell them to give me an extra bag and I usually bite it off the top and suck a bit of the cheese like a Xiao Long Bao or Chinese soup dumpling.

Once the veil of sandwich paper is drawn back, the shimmering golden bun is revealed and the fragrance of caramelized onions enwraps your nose like a warm scarf on a MN winter day. The sacred recipe beckons but you must wait or endure the searing pain of cheese burn on your lips and tongue -- You have been warned. Beef+cheese+pickles+onions+char = Jucy Lucy. There is no other. Our pilgrimage to Matt's will be long remembered. Comfy like an old slipper, but much better smelling, the charm of history and food will send you home happy, full, and planning your return.

It's very crowded, but understandably so because their cheese-oozing burger is delicious. Apparently it's so good that Obama stopped in during his presidency. Warning, they only take cash so be prepared. They do have an ATM if need be, though. Definitely delicious, so it was worth the wait in my opinion. We'll likely be back our next time we're in the area. :)

This is it! This is the home of the Juicy Lucy! And, even if it isn't, I feel confident saying they make the best one. Try stabbing the patty with your fries when the burger arrives so it can cool down faster and subsequently get eaten sooner. Also, the fries are good.

Finally made it there after numerous people I know raved about it. It looks sketchy from the outside not much for parking, the inside isn't too pretty. Simple short menu, straight to the point. Don't let the look of this place fool you, the food is amazing! Of coarse we had to get The Jucy Lucy and 1/2 order of fries and the portion was perfect.

Very RUDE greeting as we were trying to eat at this establishment! It was starting to pour down rain and one of the help guys came to the door and told us to keep it closed! Mind you we were standing in the extremely small doorway with about 10 other people and pushing out on to the sidewalk! Classic Twin Cities eats!! I came here for the first time last weekend and Matt's really lived up to its hype! There was a bit of a line to be seated, but it was a Saturday night. The place is small, so don't plan on bringing a huge crowd here. You can fit four people per table/booth. The service was a little slow, but like I said--it was Saturday night and poppin'! The food was fantastic!! The cheese inside the Jucy Lucy is of a much higher quality than any other Jucy Lucy out there and the fries were delectable. They give you a LOT of fries, so plan on being hungry! The restaurant only accepts cash payments, just so you're aware. Overall a great experience!!

BEST JUICY LUCY IN MINNESOTA! They're the best cuz they're the greasiest and the cheese goes ALL THE WAY to the edges of the patty, not just one big hunk in the middle. You'll likely be waiting awhile before you get seated but the food comes pretty quick after you order. The atmosphere is cozy and old school. I'm a local and this is a special treat to me, if you're from out of town this is a M U S T I promise you.

Awesome as promised! Not only was the Jucy Lucy delicious but the fries brought back memories of amazing McDonald's fries when they were real 40 years ago. Matt's is definitely going to be a regular stop on the way to MSP airport.
