Went here for the first time and it was awesome. The fajitas are superior, the guacamole is fresh and the beers are cold (and cheap). Unfortunately the stigma of the Star Bar still lingers over this place and the aesthetics of the neighboring establishments don't exactly scream "let's go eat". You shouldn't let that deter you from checking it out. Awesome specials accompany an awesome staff. Give them a chance; you won't be disappointed.

From the outside wasn't sure what to expect, but inside was nice. Overall the experience was positive though there were a few bumps. The food is more or less your typical Mexican food but the flavors are a little different. Perhaps the Ecuadorian influence? It was good, all of us enjoyed it, it was just different. The prices are moderate not overly expensive, but they tend to charge for every little item. And read the menu carefully, upcharges are listed but you may not see them all and then will be surprised at the check. They also charge 2 dollars for jalapeños, which were supposedly in the food but we couldn't taste them. We thought we didn't get them and then they argued about them really being there despite what we could taste. 3 people, 3 meals, 3 nonalcoholic drinks ended up about $55, not including tip. Will we go back? More than likely, we did like the food after all :) just know ahead of time what to expect.

I've read great things about their food and I'd like to go back and give that a try, but the day we went we were mis-informed about the specials, served uninspiring substitutions, and had to leave early because the woman's bathroom had no working stalls. Our server tried her best in a not so ideal situation.

Currently at the restaurant, have been seated for 40 minutes and have not gotten our drinks, not even a water. Server told us "we're really busy so you're going to have to wait a while." Why would you say that to a customer? If we weren't set on margaritas we would have gotten up and left a half hour ago. Usually I am a very content customer at really busy places, since I understand. However, this place is NOT busy like they claimed, they are not even on a wait. As we sit here, two tables have gotten up and left. Again, I'm not one to complain but this is crazy!!

Fantastic food! I will say, make sure Tony is not your server. After bringing food and drinks never came back to the table. I had to go to the bar to ask for water after a 15 minute wait. Had to ask for our check. And had to bring it to him after another 10-15 minutes. Also, got charged full price for a virgin margarita on a $70 tab. Seemed ridiculous. Very nice gentlman. But with only 3 tables to serve, I would hope for a little better service. Otherwise, would absolutely say, go for the food!

My boyfriend and i tried to go eat at this place on a Thursday night. As soon as we enter the place it took forever for them to come and sit us down. Finally someone came over to tell us the place was closed when there were plenty of people in there and the sign outside said we had an hour and a half left to go before closing. I'm basing this review on a single visit, but I was very impressed with this restaurant. My wife and I met her sister, brother-in-law, and toddler at their suggestion. It was a good one. The service was prompt and accurate, especially since we had a couple of specific requests. Nothing too crazy, but things that can often be overlooked. Our food was exactly as we ordered it and very, very delicious! The portions were generous to say the least, and even though I struggled a bit towards the end, it was so good that I felt I would be missing out if I didn't finish. I have absolutely no regrets! Our server was friendly as well, and interacted with the 9-month-old we had along in a playful manner. Even the other customers in the restaurant were friendly and seemed familiar with each other and the staff. All in all, my wife and I will definitely be returning during our next visit to the area.

El tequila is a gem of columbia heights. Whenever my hubs and I want to spice up our day- whether that’s an Easter delight, a football Sunday, or just a casual Columbia heights bar crawl. The patrons are always a delight- whether it’s the crackhead selling flowers or the friendly Vikings lovers. The service is always top notch, and the pina coladas are the most delish in town

It takes you a really long time to get your food after you order it. I ordered tamales and they came dry. The menu said they were to have a red sauce on them. When I told the waiter he went to the kitchen and came back and said it's on the inside. I showed him there was nothing on the inside and then came back with some sort of green sauce. The place felt unclean. Just a touch too unattended. While the fish tacos were tasty, we were surprised to get a $1 charge for the fish! This was also true for the other dish we ordered - you got a choice of meats, then got an upcharge of $1. Wait staff did their job. Wouldn't go back.

Hadn't been in this place since it was the Star Bar and I love what they've done with it. The rice and beans were ok but the steak enchiladas were delicious. Overall a nice place and I will definitely be back. I'll have to check it out on a Saturday when there's a DJ.

Stopped in this restaurant with friend out shopping had to use the bathroom decided to sit at the bar, my friend ordered a bottled water and they told her it would be $3 for the bottled water when she asked why so much they told her they were charging her an extra dollar because she used the restroom. They claimed it was because she was not a customer we hadn't even gotten the chance to sit down yet! At that point I told my friend let's just go I don't want anything from this restaurant nor will I ever go back.

A great place for Mexican/Ecuadorian food. The servers are great and the food is even better. The Margaritas look weird (think neon green) but they're delicious and strong. I recommend the Enchiladas with Carnitas and Verde (green) sauce. Say hi to Tony!

Great food for decent prices! Margarita was awesome and super tequila-e (yep I just made that word up). I had the steak tacos and my hubby had a ghost pepper burrito. Would definitely eat here again to try more of the menu. Chips and salsa were great, they offered a mild and a hot salsa. Service was soooo friendly! Patio was great on a sunny August afternoon.

Disappointed, we went to El Tequila on the NYE for dinner. The restaurant was almost empty at 7:00pm. Surprised! Only one waitress! After spending about one hour, here is why; poor food quality & tasteless, bland. Not really clean. A drunk Mexican guy walked in and they let him sit, he smelled very bad (he set in the table behind us). We couldn't finish or meals. Greedy people tried to sell him some food. I talked to the waitress and made my complain, paid the bill and left. It was the first and the last time. We will not go there again, and of course it will not be recommended to our friends.

Food was luke warm, service very slow, and taste was tolerable. We got very stale chips and the server took about 5 minutes to bring another basket which was only marginally better. Ordered a cheese dip which was decent but came out barely warm. Chicken was lower quality with unpleasant taste. Service was slow even though there were only 2 other tables occupied. Definitely not returning.

We went later on a Sunday and few people were there, but I don't thing that changed how the food wad made- in a good way. The starter chips come with two salsa's both good but the spicy has a good kick to it & it kinda took me off guard. Lol. I double dipped the two & it was better for me. I ordered the Arroz con Pollo and it was very good & a good three meals out of it for me. My friend ordered the Fish Taco Combo and thought it was very good- he ate all of his. They also have Moldela Negra on tap which is a bonus for me.

Do not be fooled by the outside. This restaurant has a fun decor with outdoor seating on the side of the building. Outgoing friendly staff. Food is interesting combinations with fun flavors and beautiful presentation. Only I guess you have to be careful ordering. I was very shocked when I ordered the grilled fish off the featured grilled chicken and fish 12.99 flier and was charged $19. Because the two items on the flier headed 12.99 were not actually 12.99.

Male server overcharged me on margaritas during happy hour, so I didn't leave a tip, and he took the liberty of adding a tip for himself anyways. I would have chose no stars if it would let me.
