My party of 4 came in and took a seat in the dinning room. We waited and nobody helped us. We sat there for about 10 minutes and watched employees standing around chit chatting. So we left and went next door to Lafayette coney island. It was packed in there. They served us fast and were very courteous.
Amazing chili, I have never been here before, food was amazing I ordered a hot dog. Someone in my family got fries and chili, best chili ever. I have never been to Lafayette Coney Island but I'm planning to go soon. Go here!!
Slow service, when it wasn't terribly busy (mid afternoon). Others were waited on who came in after us. It was 100 degrees outside and server forgot to bring water until our food finally arrived. He brought checks for other diners who came in after us. We had call out to ask for the check, which is a bit embarrassing. Another server asked if we needed anything. This is unfortunate, as this seems like a nice, family friendly, popular place. Maybe our server was having a bad day? I hope so.
It was super busy and all the servers were doing their best. I ordered chili cheese fries, my fries were warm, not hot. My boyfriend ordered chicken and fries, his fries were unsalted and warm. I think it’s better going during the day versus the middle of the night
Always amazing chili dogs. Open 24hours
Nice diner in Detroit. Has the plus of being open late. Me and some friends went and the staff was fun. Got some coneys which were good and loaded. Food wasn't too expensive. Liked it!
Drove from Cleveland just to take my wife. She doesn't like chili dogs but I've always told her it's because she's never had a real coney dog! The first thing she said was "mm mm, this is good!" Lol
Great service, very friendly staff, great food. Would absolutely go again!
Loved it this time, loved it every time I've had it in the last, and pretty sure I'll keep on loving it in the future.
Food was good but they have no combinations everything is a-la-carte and they don't sell burgers.
Home of the original Coney. As you notice next door they are feuding with the competition. Their hot dogs are delicious from the first chewy bite and lots of flavor. The view of the city is good from this place
Really cool atmosphere!
The best what more can I say
I'M A TRUE NATIVE DETROITER & I HAVE BEEN ASKED THE QUESTION & WONDERED MYSELF WHO HAS THE BEST CONEY DOG LAFAYETTE OR AMERICAN SO THIS YEAR ON MY 49TH BIRTHDAY I WENT TO HAVE MY OWN LITTLE TASTE TEST........AND THE WINNER IS...........AMERICAN CONEY
First time ever eating Coney dogs and they were amazing. Didnt know they were made with mustard so it rattled my taste buds. Ordered, received food and devoured all within 6 minutes. Very friendly staff!
Great no frills diner offering the Detroit famous Coney Island do and some beers.
Had a good experience here with my daughter. The food arrives rapidly and the service is just good. Prices are affordable.
I’ve had the best Coney Dog and it wasn’t from here. The place is big but you can tell where the quality is at. A bunch of kids working here and nothing was really organized. They were closing up so we ate our food super quick and left. Nothing special to write about. The only positive about this place was that the chili cheese fries were enough for two. Can’t tell you that I would go back to this place again but you will definitely see me next door for a bite.
Great hotdogs but little bit high prices
Coney dog was just the classic you'd expect, but the fries were highly cardboard-esque and thusly very disappointing. The chili on top was acceptable though. The service was good and the place was pretty clean overall.
I’ve been to coney islands expecting less and my expectations were exceeded. Being that this is a renown location I expected more but got subpar food. If I read chicken Greek salad I’m expecting at a minimum chicken. Reconstituted chicken meat is definitely not what I was expecting. I asked for no olives but the salad tasted like olives with one olive in the bed of lettuce. Clearly these salads are prepared and the lettuce is poorly prepared. The core of the lettuce is left in the salad. No one eats that. There was wilted lettuce and brown stained lettuce, they basically did not bother to remove the first two or three leaves. The chili cheese fries lacked cheese, had a whole lot of beef chili and less than anticipated fries. BUT the view is ... PHENOMENAL It just is. The service was good too. Good not great. I’ll have to try their competition next door that doesn’t have the view but maybe they have more pride in their very limited menu. Also a positive thing, they have great tasting water. Clearly they have installed water filters because the water was not the typical restaurant city tasting water. It was refreshing. Basically it’s mediocre. I’d probably go again, maybe.
Meh. Definitely overrated. First and foremost, our server was basically an a-hole. He was obnoxiously unfriendly to the point where we all felt like it wasn’t even worth asking him for anything else after our food came. The rest of the staff we interacted with and observed seemed perfectly fine. This dude should not be working front of the house. Beyond that, the food was ok. The cheese on the cheese fries was only like 50% melted at best. Didn’t really like that. I tried their famous American dog and also it was mostly meh. The roll wasn’t very fresh and the chili lacked much flavor. The restaurant itself was really clean and well decorated, including the restroom. I think 3/5 stars perfectly sums it up. I get why other tourists would want to try it for its name value and history, but definitely don’t go out of your way.
awesome place. great service. good food.
Not a fan. Want good coneys? Go to Flint for a Flint style coney.
The waiter was incompetent, and having difficulty with the simplest of tasks and questions. The next morning, my friend was violently sick and had to stay in proximity to a toilet for hours. Also, the meal (I got a Coney dog) was just bland and unsatisfactory.
Been going here since I was a kid the food hasn't changed still the best convey in town
Been here twice and both times the servers were super friendly! Food was good too.
Staff is friendly. Food is not the best
The chili dog is okay but apparently this has been domesticated too much already. I was looking for the old person that still puts the chili. Nonetheless go to the other door and give it a shot.
The food was mostly fried chicken and fries, hot dogs, salads. Service was ok. It's a quick in eat for us.
Just ate here June 28 2019 I ordered chilli cheese fries, simple. I am sick as hell I think I have food poisoning, I threw up the rest of that day and still throwing up and sick today. That Arab boy that made my food, I feel like he did something or y'all cooking is unclean. I will never eat here again in my life be lucky I don't like the hospital y'all would have a problem.
The place is an american icon,Which is located downtown Detroit player with in walking distance to all major avenues great food friendly staff would recommend to anyone
It was okay, portion was very tiny for the price, taste was alright... I wouldn't recommend eating here for fun, the flavor of the coney sauce was odd, not what I'm used to, THEY DON'T SERVE BREAKFAST AT ALL!!
A buddy of mine came from Atlanta, I wanted to give him an experience at this place. We werent greeted first off, second, once we sat, we waited for 15 minutes before a random waiter walks by and asks us if we had been taken care of, i said no. So 5 more minutes go by 2 suburban customers walk in, are followed to their seats and waited on accrodingly by that same waiter.. i wish there was an option to leave no stars!!
Always a GREAT stop for post-bar recovery food!
A quick bite - every now & then YOU have a tasty for the best money in the D
The employees there were GREAT! However the system in place is HORRIBLE... We waited almost an hour in line just to get sub-par precooked food! And it was extremely over priced!!! I will not return....There are too many EXCELLENT Coney Islands in and around the city to settle for what they're passing off!
I prefer Lafayette, but you should still come visit. They have a bit more of an expanded menu than their neighbor.
I liked the cooney dog it was a cool diner
Just your average Coney and fries. Very minimal menu but as long as you know that beforehand everything is ok.
This place was absolutely amazing!!! It has a great history behind its wonderful coney. I look forward to visiting here again on my work travels.
Ran out of chicken and Greek early in the night, didn’t answer the phone for take out.
Good cheap place to have a snack or lunch. Great view of Detroit city. But the hot dog was a little bit over cooked for my taste. I also think the place needs free WiFi.
Good food don't serve breakfast and they're a little expensive
Open 24/7, and they have the Ohio based Strohs beer! (Which is not offered at a lot of places)
I have to wait over a half an hour before they even took my order the food wasn't hot then they said they saw I was sitting so long they don't give me a free pop they never brought that
The service was slow and unfriendly but the food like always was great! This place has been around a very long time and will be but they could use an attitude adjustment with the services and busers.
Good service. Food is alright. I will go again.
I will go there again because usually when we do go there it is very very late and our options are limited ...that's about the best I can say about it ...it's food
I visit here often and love the food. Belinda was my server, and she was great.Parking is horrible during lunch hours which is why I only gave 4 stars instead of 5, but after 10 is free. Crazy busy on weekends during drunk hours. I actually met my current boyfriend here. <3
Food was nasty, and the service was horrible.
The food hasn’t been the same since the owner died , my last visit was 08/28 and my American coney was dry and fries over cooked and cold ..
Always love going into this place. Whether its busy or not the service is great, the food is amazing, and the atmosphere is always relaxing/welcoming. Would recommend everyone in the city try it at least once!
The perfect late night or day time food. Coney dogs were Phenomenal. Coney dogs are awesome here in American Coney island good anytime food, it was crowded after we visited MGM 1:00 in the morning , we had to go to Lafayette because there's not one seat available American. Either way the Coney dogs and chili cheese fries with onions on top Were amazing. Definatly were the best Coney island in Michigan I should say the best I apologize I don't check him out if you haven't yet you can't go wrong
Came here this past weekend after leaving the music festival and the place was absolutely chaotic definitely not worth the wait. It was edible as a Coney dog… But honestly the best thing here is the chili cheese fries
Fast service,great food
It's good after bar food... but for a coney I expect more. Their chili isn't good I wish they used liquid cheese like national does on chili cheese fries. Hot dog itself was pretty good but overall disappointing. Oh and they serve pepsi which is a big no in my book. Should be coke. I'm kinda shocked their place is so big compared to Lafayette next door. They should just sell to the ppl next door and Lafayette should expand if possible lol... they're the better coney if you're ever coming to try the "battling coneys" The staff was friendly. Prompt. Food came out super fast. I was impressed the glasses they serve pop in are cold. I kinda liked that. But overall it was not what I've heard. I expected it to compare to next doors coney since people argue about which is better. If youre a foodie and have taste... don't come here. If you prefer more bland food this is your spot.
Servers and cooks were doing the best they could while a manager SCREAMED at them my entire visit. White female late 50's. She made it extremely hard to eat or even stay in the building degrading her workers so bad. It makes the customers uneasy so I could only imagine how staff feels. Do better.
As always American Coney did not disappoint. Not to mention I had a first time visitor with me. And she enjoyed the late night meal right along with me.
Great place for some of the best coneys around!
Amazing Food. The Coney Dogs And Chili Cheese Fries are over the top! The service was slow but I would wait 20 minutes for good food. Definitely Recommend this place!
One of the best places in Detroit to grab a hot dog
Was not good, they were busy though so some must enjoy their food.
It was a great place to get a Coney Island they were friendly they were fast and courteous it was delicious food I ate 3 Coney Island and I enjoy them all I will return
Super fast and fantastic service. I love conveys so I'm coming back for more. Delicious!
Either expectation was too high or original American Hot Dogs are not my thing
Great coneys, fries and friendly quick service!! Loved the atmosphere!
The food is always good, the security there saves lives and are awesome people. I love how they go out their way to support the homeless in their time of need. The management takes care of business and so does the staffers. Food is always great! Highly Recommended!!
The atmosphere great, the staff great, the coney dog... I give it a grade of a B. The chilli, onion, and mustard blend didn't seem to go together as well as next door. It was still good though, don't get me wrong!
These guys are working hard and really seem to care. Good food, five stars.
Just did the Lafayette/American Coney challenge. Lafayette wins hands down. Better service , better chilli and better french fries. Only thing American had was ambiance otherwise Lafayette all the way
Been here multiple times during the North American International Auto show in January . Love the snap of the Koegel hot dogs they use. Never left hungry or unsatisfied. Try to get there as much as I can. If you are downtown Detroit check it out.
First off I'm not a big hotdog guy. The Hot dog its self was good, the chilli seemed no better than canned. The bread was supermarket quality. The restuarant itself was clean and service was average. If it's your first time in Detroit I still would encourage you to try for yourself.
During visit on 3/21/2019 service was fast and food served hot. Good coney dogs and fries. They use shredded cheese for their chili-cheese fries, and while not bad, is not my personal favorite. Menus are a little table tent, so don't expect the server to bring a page/booklet to your table. American takes credit cards when others do not.
Only had shredded cheese.. Service was kinda slow. But it was crowed. Our server Belinda was nice. I would recommend this place
I love American Coney Island it's a Jem and you don't have to wait a long time to get your food
Not a good place. I don't know why people love it. I didn't like the food at all. The hot dogs were not good enough and ironically hotdog is their best dish. I also ordered cheese fries which was okay. But the thing is, the price of the fries were high. I would say it wasn't a good experience for me. The service was good though.
Love this place. Manager made experience amazing by making us feel so welcome. Ordered coney dogs, fries, salads, chicken pita
Cheese fries & American dog? Basically the works. Yummy stuff! Great service, they were so friendly even though we were wearing the opposing team jersey that day.
Always one of my favorite quick bites to eat when I'm downtown. Dogs with a snap that will keep you coming back.
A really good place when you're going for a walk to just stop and get something to eat. I go there occasionally but i always enjoy going there
Beer was ice cold, dogs snap when you bite 'em, chili cheese fries make ya fat. Perfect meal and excellent service.
Pretty good! Service expectations were not communicated clearly so their inventiveness came across as rude. Live and learn. I really enjoyed the location, it'll be even more attractive when the construction is done. Although I don't get they hype of coney's, I would still make this my go-to spot for getting one when I'm in town as competitors are just okay. I got 2 coney's - all the way.
Let's be honest, you come here knowing it ain't fine dining so it's better to set the expectations lower and be pleasantly surprised if something good comes out of it. My pleasant surprise came in the form of a mixed up order and I got 2 dogs for the price of 1 cause the waitress couldn't be bothered taking it back. I went on a Saturday night with 4 others after a lot of drinking. The cheese on the french fries had zero flavour - Kraft slices would have tasted better. The microwave worked really hard that night. There's surprisingly a lot of different beers. Service was good and the place was consistently busy.
A Detroit institution. You definitely need to try both American and Lafayette and pick your side. But if you remove the history and rate it in a vacuum, it's pretty pedestrian. Still, worth the trip.
Good place but make time cause they are odd with how they do their orders
Eat in and enjoy a city view
Wonderfully decorated. Reasonable prices. Friendly service. Lots of displayed history.
Great place for Coneys and beers. Even better is the chili cheese fries. If you’re there during the summer months it can get crowded on Friday and Saturday nights. Don’t expect fine dining service, it’s a dive.
Wonderful late night grub. My girlfriend and I we're traveling to Detroit for a weekend. The service was quick and the staff were very pleasant.
Coney Island is great Detroit novelty junk food. This location is great and their staff is amazing. The service was quick and the food was hot.
Not all that good i could have thrown that b.s together but what do you expect... its Detroit.
The food here is always great, and they are fast at preparing your meal. It is great that they are open 24 hours, and it is in walking distance of many of the hotels nearby. The staff is very pleasant and you can take your time and stay as long as you want and are not rushed. A great place for a working lunch. Have been to this location many times, and will be back when I am in the area.
Service was poor and the food was not that good.will not be going back there.
Best Coneys in the "D"!!!
Good food nice people
Terrible food won't go back hotdog was burnt
Great place love the hot dogs well chili dogs
Never disappoints! Best hot dogs around !
The original Coney island one of the one of the only twoConey islands that I would eat in this city
My first cony island hotdogs was delicious. The staff is extremely efficient and friendly.
Good food but limited menu. Worth It if u want a price if sitting in historical restaurant
Very spacious and has good customer service. The food tastes great too.
Great food for a really excellent price. Also they have Vernors, which is delicious.
I like the coney. Fries were too done for me. Unfortunately for American coney, I like Lafayette coney Island better.
Meh. I mean they're Coney's, right? If you're looking for an oblong gut-grenade, look no further. I would definitely go back.
Not a great vibe for a late night stop, but the chili dog was good. Have to say though it was a little on the bland side for taste, but it does have a great snap to the dog.
I cannot believe how disgusting the coney dog was: took one bite and threw it out. The hot dog didn't look so artificial and was cold, toppings looked inferior to Taco Bell, what's that tell you? Iconic..maybe, quality of food, lousy! eat elsewhere
Good service fast and delicious
Clean,good food and good service
Much better options just a short walk away. Limited menu, poor service. Way overpriced for the quality of food received. If the kids weren't cranky and starving...
The clientele isn't always the best , with it being a 24hr place if you go there for breakfast alot of time there are the left over drunk/druggies hanging around. The menu is pretty limited
I love how they’re open 24 hours and the food never disappoints. I love to come every now and then. The staff is also really nice.
HORRIBLE, not sure what happened to this place. Fries were cold and Old and my 2 Chilli Dogs were burnt and disgusting. Sad
The Coney dogs were very tasty and.the cook was very pleasant.
Great affordable food. Fresh tasty with a funny staff quick service too!
Great coney slow service and no one was in there.
I'll be honest my whole life I've been a Lafayette Coney person, all the way back to being a kid when the two families used to stay outside the doors and argue at each other. But this time we chose American because of their menu and just like any other Coney place good food fast decent price. especially when we had friends from out of town that haven't had Coney dogs in a while it was really good experience!
Nice hotdogs that have a nice snap whe you bite into them.
The Coney dog was indeed a delicious treat. The service was fast and keep in mind this is a cash only spot. Traffic and parking was horrible. I paid $4 in the garage (which was the only available parking) for a 8 min stop. The food was worth it.
Very nice service. Omar did an awesome job
Nasty Never going back meat on Wrap was stone could plate was dirty
Place was pretty dirty. I ordered a gyro plate. Meat was so over cooked and dry. I wouldnt try again.
Lafayette Cony More friendly and better tasting
i prefer a lafayette loose burger...but thats just me...nice dining area though. and good staff...food was good..
Best tasting Coney Dogs in downtown Detroit.
i hate that i had a better meal than at Lafayette. vibes are not as good tho
Took my family there for the first time, my daughter in law loved the Greek salad.
Really good food and great service.
The first time i went they coney dog was delicious but the second time i went the casing on the hot dog was chewy and ruined the whole experience. They arent very consistant. You have to choose the right shift of workers l. I wont be going back though. That last experience turned me waaay off.
I love this place because of the Coney dogs, Fries, and of course getting that amazing view of the city.
Best service and the best coney's
The food at this restaurant is very good and I would highly recommend it. The menu has a vast selection of different types of food to meet mostly any need. From my experience the service was very good. The restaurant is self is clean and taken care of.
Best Coney's hands down. Coney dog with everything and chili cheese fries is my classic go to. Always fresh n hot. And those dogs got SNAP!!
Not my best experience here. Appeared to be short-staffed. Took forever to take our order. Food took a long time to arrive. Food was just okay not as good as on previous visits
Great service!!! The owner is absolutely amazing. she is very supportive to her staff, she’d be great to work for. Great Vibe here.
Excellent been going there for over 40 years
Open 24/7 nice place to eat late
A jewel in the heart of downtown Detroit. It was just a quick lunch, chili dog and fries. It was dropped on me 3 mns after ordering. Hot , fries crispy. I'm saying if you like a good chili dog now and then stop by.
Pros- Not a long line, quick service Clean bathroom Clean tables Food is alright Old school diner vibe Courteous staff Cons- Gyro and grilled chicken pita sandwiches tasted good but the meat wasn't hot... It was probably pre cooked a long time ago. Fries were soggy, so they were old
Great service price and portion was decent. Food was decent I've had better was expecting more.
When my husband and I walked in to eat here we didn't know whether to sit down or go to the counters to place an order. They should have a greeter at the door or a sign. Otherwise the food was decent, not the best.
Always good after a night of drinking and clubing downtown...3:30 am two coneys to go!
Was a great place ! Great service
Very disappointed. Me and my boyfriend visited this place after the Chris Brown concert . Our food was over cooked and hard! He ordered the coney and I ordered the gyro sandwich. The fries were cold and hard the soda taste like water! I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone they don’t take pride in quality!
It's always good, they just need to put enough chili on the chili fries
Excellent homie environment great staff
It only gets better as the night gets darker. After about 10 shots the hotdog here tastes like heaven.
They don’t open until 10 on sundays
I grew up in this place and the service and food used to be superb. I am not sure what happened but my last three visits will probably be my last. It was a busy night but they took the order of party that came in after us even after 20 mins of being assured our order would be taken next. The waiter took our order then came back to repeat it twice only to get it wrong. I could go on but I would be writing a book. I have never been so disappointed with there service. Please go back to the way you were!
Decent beer selection, friendly service, and low prices are all in this shop's favor. Fries are good, too. However, the coney/chili dog was frankly lackluster. Cheap bun, chili poured all on top instead of in the bun, and not a fantastic dog underneath. If you have limited time in the city, hit one of the great eateries within a few blocks of this instead.
There were three of us at the restaurant. Everyone ordered fries. We agreed, worst fries ever. Frozen fries prepared in the microwave. Delicious. We left the fries standing
Good food and good price.
Friendly and fast service. Seat yourself so it may get busy and hard to find a table but I've had a great experience here every time!
Great place great food
Not Lafayette, but still pretty good!
If you're the downtown Detroit area put this on your list definitely a place just to go to just to see in general. If you get a chance sit up in the front window great view! They serve a ton of local distribute beer from Detroit.
A Detroit historic coney place. The story is: It was owned by two Greek immigrant brothers. They had a fall out and one of them quit and opened another one next door.
