This Restaurant is included in the category of Barbecue restaurant.
I tried this place a few times, last being about a year ago. The food was over cooked and dry. Today I figured I’d give them another try. The meet was the same, over cooked and dry. I could barely eat it. I got the barbecue chicken and brisket, both very dry. Disappointing for an established place. This is the 4th time that I experienced the same quality. I gave it two stars because the sides were good. A barbecue place with the reputation they have shouldn’t be putting out food like this!
A successor to the amazing East Coast Grill, Blackstrap is just as great. Many styles of barbecue combine into a sampler of America's greatest meats, and some of the East Coast Grill's famous spicy sauces are available here also. For displaced Southerners like me, a wonderful taste of home. Don't miss this.
I paid $48 for 12 wings and a 3 meat meal for take out. No napkins, no utensils, and they sent me some bad and flavorless "garlic and herbs" wings with a 2 meat meal (when in fact I paid for a 3 meat one!!!). They also sent the wrong sides. I ordered ribs, and I just got 2 different types of flavorless chicken. Like really guys? It was an online order and you charged me almost 50 bucks for that!?!?! Never again.
Very good food and a really cool atmosphere. I've had better chicken and waffles, but they were still quite good.
Amazing!
Try the chili! or at least the chili mac side. I've tried a bunch of bbq over the years and this is probably my favorite in the Boston area since Uncle Pete's closed. Burnt Ends are really good too.
Delicious food, great service, and friendly conversation. Totally a fan!
Local joint in town with easily the best BBQ in the area. Awesome drinks and huge portions.
Love this place great little bar. The wings were sweet.
I cannot say enough good things about this place... My favorite restaurant since moving to Boston. I love going there because it reminds me of the kind of BBQ joint you would find in my hometown of Portland Oregon. Young, cool, friendly staff, and the owners are wonderful guys, and the music... it may not be for everyone, but it's like the best of college radio, and I am a huge fan. If you like Sleigh Bells with your BBQ this is the hip place for you. To be honest there have been a few times some side items have not been up to standard but the BBQ is to die for
I love this place. Best BBQ in New England!
Puchased the 2 meat meal for $17.99. it came with 2 ribs and a 3/4 inch wide by 1.5 inch high slice of brisket, and 2 small sides and apiece of cornbread. Draw your own conclusions, but i think the meal was overpriced. Place was clean, service good
Amazing bbq! Their ribs and pulled pork are my favorite. Relatively inexpensive as well
Great food. Perfect sized portions. Bring your appetite. The server was amazing as well. We ordered some extra food mid meal and it came in minutes. I recommend the ribs and my child boy recommends the mac. Do yourself a favor and get some.
This is my local bar. These guys are really friendly and the food is dynamite. Try the wings. I get them every time.
Good BBQ is hard to find in Massachusetts, but there are a few and Blackstrap is probably the best of them. The portions seem to have gotten much smaller over the years, but the food is excellent and the price is still reasonable.
Really would like to give it a 3.5 stars. It was about average BBQ. Good enough but not worth the T ride there.
Best BBQ in metro Boston. The kind Food you'd want if you where going to the Electric Chair good.friendly staff cozy atmosphere.
Great food and drinks! Awesome BBQ and original twists on old time favorites on the menu. Small town local feel where they know your name and give you a warm welcome. Signature cocktails are a must! Casual, laid back and always pumping good music! Order the full menu at the bar or sit restaurant side..nice and cozy surrounded by local artists works. Highly recommend!
Great place! Atmosphere is excellent!
My New favorite BBQ spot I love their mac and cheese and sweet potato hash
It's flat out auwsom
Meat was dry, BBQ sauce lacked flavor, coleslaw treated like it was bathed in vinegar, and I was crammed in a corner which I could barely get out of. The cornbread was good, but they could have given us some butter for it. I had high hopes based on the reviews, but came away very disappointed.
Good food and fun atmosphere but small.
Only been to this place once, but we still talk about going back asap. Our server was friendly and helpful(go SU!), and the barbecue was on point. Huge portions and a great selection of beers. Definitely try the burnt ends of brisket! We will be going back soon!
Nice location with a big menu. I ordered a big plate with rips and pulled pork. My wife had the same plate with brisket and rips. Side were good. Brisket and rips were a little bit dry. Also the meat was low on temperature. So three stars for that location
Fun, friendly and amazing BBQ! A hidden gem and totally work the drive. I highly recommend the fried pickles, salty fried little devils
Had a few drinks. Then Crissy started feeding me more and more juice in my cocktail. I mentioned it and she got real defensive. Treated me like a liar... Had no reason to lie. Plus the food really isn't that special. Never returning.
Friendly place. Everyone, including the other guests, were so friendly. Loved the food.
Good service good food
Not my favorite BBQ place (though I am from the south, so it has a lot of competition) but still good. Service was great and the atmosphere was awesome. I'd argue they use a little too much vinegar in their food (or more than a little too much), but I still enjoyed it, and everyone else seemed to, so your mileage may vary.
Great BBQ & an Array of Sides Great Band was Performing too on Saturday Night, I would Definitely Go back Again!!
Nice atmosphere. The service was pretty good. However, the food need some improvement. The BBQ wasn't bad but the sides was almost inedible. Cornbread was so salty I couldn't finish it.
Grest service good food
Great food, good atmosphere, just wish they had brisket. Oh and the service was great!
Used to be much better. Just ordered the gumbo, nothing other than a few pieces of sausage and rice. Nice sauce, but wasn't there supposed to be some chicken and shrimp in there? Very disappointing. And a completely unfriendly bartender to boot (although she had some peeps at the end that seemed captivating). Will not return for a while, and I am a local who loves barbecue. Hope they get their act together, it's been a while since they didn't come up way short
Delicious food, great staff and not expensive
Katie= awesome! Cold beers and Margarita. Poutine yummy with crispy pork. I ordered a two meat. Jerk chicken ( extremely dry) couldn't swallow without drink and burnt ends ( extremely dry and it was pulled beef). Green beans were hard as a rock. Boyfriend ordered three meat and it was exactly the same. So disappointed!
The best ribs in Boston. Their BBQ is more rub based than sauce based (though they also have a large selection of sauces).
Did not taste good. Beans were burnt and did not tell me I needed to get my own sauce with a take out order.
Best bbq around
Went to Blackstrap after hearing great things from my roommate and a few friends who live in the area. If you like BBQ and fun sides, this is the place! Our table got a bunch of stuff to share and I was very happy with all of it. Special shout out to the ginger scallion lo mein and the pastrami Ruben which we're both absolutely tremendous! My favorite side was the Asian slaw with a close second being the corn and bacon salad. The staff was super attentive as well, which made for a really pleasant experience. The beers we're flowing and the water was always refilled (a necessity if you like the spicier sauces they have!). Another special shout out to the owner, Chris who made sure we were well taken care of. Can't wait to get back there to try some of the pulled meats and wings that I missed!
Amazing food, friendly staff and a cool atmosphere
First time in there , excellent location , ambience, menu . Friendly staff.
This place has great food, vibes, and drinks. My favorite place in East Boston/Winthrop
LOVE everything about this place
Genuinely the best BBQ I had so far. Staff was very nice, portions were big and the price is good. No complaints about anything here. Even the chef came to our table for a quick moment to ask if we liked the food. 5/5 would recommend everyone!
Blackstrap is a local favorite. The food here is truly authentic BBQ cooked to perfection. There's a dining area and a separate bar area (fully equipped with a great custom drink lineup). The staff there is fantastic. My only complaint (though not enough to make me lower my rating) is that if you try to call to place an order to go getting them to answer the phone is no easy feat... that being said, the reason for this is that they are busy being attentive to the folks in the restaurant. If you walk in and order it takes just moments to get your order in most all circumstances as it all had to be cooked slow and low in advance anyway! A couple of "must try" items in my opinion are the fried pickles, the corn & bacon salad, and the chili mac & cheese.
Amazing food... the place is great inside and really nice employees
Great service and Great food at a Great price!
Ooooh Blackstrap! They have a smoker right in the kitchen, awesome ribs, wings..... Great drinks too, just see my favorite bartender Jess
Great ribs !!
Everything I had was excellent
I’ve lived in Texas and the south many years and been to various BBQ places. This restaurant is disappointing. The brisket was dry and the Mac n cheese soggy.
If you want to eat the best BBQ there is then this is the place
Great sides and meals. Particularly ribs and sweet potato mash.
Burnt molasses in the beans.. Horrible bbq flavor. Sub par service. Why everyone raves about this place is beyond me.
Food good but drinks pricey
Recommend the collard greens, delicious. The brisket is also delicious and tender, minus the seasoning they sprinkle on top. The pulled pork is a little to NC style vinegar flavor for me. Overall, would definitely return.
The memphis dry rub was amazing-- the right amount of seasoning that didn't even need a sauce to accompany it. With that said, we did try several sauces with the brisket and our favorite was the sweet bbq although the Carolina was good as well. The menu at blackstrap is impressive. There are so many delicious options that you'll keep wanting to come back to try something else.
BBQ, yeah, so great. I love eating here. The staff was very helpful and observant. It has an awesome feel to it.
The place is definitely a good time! Marg nights!
As a BBQ lover and living near Winthrop, I really wanted to love this place, but it is just OK and the BBQ is not that great. If you have never had Carolina, Georgia, or Texas bbq, the maybe you will be fine with it. First the positives! Christian the bartender/waiter was extremely nice and helpful and sat our party of six quickly. Good drink and beer selection, but might be the first bbq place without sweet tea! Amazing portion sizes but we didnt like it enough to finish. The appetizers are good. Fried pickles are excellent with a good batter that sticks on well. The crab and andouille hush puppies were very tasty with good chunks of crab but the outside was overcooked and too crunchy. The cornbread is huge but too dry and crumbly. The brisket was very tender and had an excellent smoke complexion. Decent smoke ring but no bark included. A few pieces were ok but a few were dry. The pulled pork was much more vinegary that most Carolina bbq I have had. It was almost inedible it had so much vinegar flavor. Also a bit dry. The South Carolina sauce on the side was a bit better than the North but was still more vinegar and not enough mustard. The sweet bbq sauce is standard and good. Brisket sandwich was good but a bit dry. If things were not overcooked and more juicy we might comeback. BBQ sweet potato salad was ok but lacked a bbq flavor and had some undercooked sweet potatoes. Cole slaw...excellent! Mac and cheese was good but not great. Collards were disappointing. Not the sweet blackstrap molasses flavor I was looking for and a bit raw. Nice vibe and an intimate small place. Needs work on the food. I recommend Smoke BBQ in Charleston, SC if you want Carolina pork
The best bbq in the northeast! Had the burnt ends and the ribs. The mustard hot sauce paired well with the dry rub on the ribs. Sides were the chili mac and the baked beans. The cornbread is moist and crumbled perfectly. Absolutely delicious all around.
It was just OK for me. The waiter was real nice until he said his most popular sauce was the hot BBQ but failed to mention it was as hot as it was. The portions were light for the price, but the meat itself was good. The sausage was the best so far that I tried between that and the dry rub ribs and brisket. The collards didn’t taste anything like the ones I’ve had in the south. No salt no pork flavor. Wouldn’t return
Didn't get meat plate. Also it took too long for food. Spend a hour waiting
Great atmosphere, friendly service, good food
Good place to have a drink in town. But not that late. Last call means that they are closing right now. We asked our last drink like everybody and we had to leave it on the bar because they asked us to leave the place. Not clever. Last call means you can ask your last drink and not that you have to leave inmediately even though you just had it served. Everybody got angry.
Wow! This place was beyond amazing! Honeymooning from Kansas City, so we know our BBQ! Owner went above & beyond for us. Amazing sauces. Amazing meats. Amazing sides. And my wife is a vegetarian, and even she enjoyed the non-meat items they had here. This a must stop, and we will definitely be back if we are ever in the area again!
Great place for bbq near Boston. There are many different types of barbeque sauces that can be used with whatever you order. Plenty of side dishes to try and there are vegetarian options that did not disappoint. There isn't much seating but they could accommodate our group of 7 and the staff was helpful and friendly
This place is amazing!!! All the bartenders know me by name. I only wish I didn't havd to move away.
The blackened BBQ tips were cooked to perfection, we like them not chard. The cornbread is divine, the server said it has molasses in it, the molasses makes the cornbread stay together and moist. Wish we had one in downstate Illinois.
Food was great!!! Nice little place with great atmosphere
Food sucks! Meats are dry, you have to pull the meat off the bones! How long did they cook this? 30 minutes??!! The baked beans are kind of bitter. The pulled pork is dry. Even cornbread is dry.
The wings here are unbelievable and so is their corn bread! I got the 2 meat bbq plate and got shredded barbecue chicken and burnt ends of brisket with creamed corn and mac and cheese. Everything was delicious! Our server was super nice and was very quick with the drink refills! Top notch service and top notch food! Sometimes the service is slow but that's usually when they are slammed. Either way, this place is worth the wait!
Friendly hosts, nice atmosphere, good food. Would definitely come again.
Food was good, not great, good. The waiter was very unhappy to help me out when it was realized that I had a older menu, even though I got the menu from a counter that morning. I live in Winthrop so I didn't have to drive far, but I would not drive more that 20 minutes to go there. Even if the rude waiter did help me out.
The food is great. The service.... well that day we get some problems to order. It was just 1 guy in the bar and he was the waiter. Long time wait the food and the drinks. Not enough forks and knives. I really enjoy the meal the restaurant is very good looking ;) give a chance. I loved the corn- bacon salad and the ribs !!!
They got poutine with duck, Pretty good. Loads of sauce you can pick for yourself and test by yourself.
Enjoyed the Food and choice of Music. The service was also good.
Best chicken wings around hands down.
This place is great! Food is amazing the drinks are good and the staff acts like they're actually happy to be there. It gives it quite the atmosphere. Make sure to try the brunch menu on weekends. You won't regret it!
Great service - friendly and fast, everything from the fried hot dog as an appetizer to the Texas bisket was amazing. Highly recommend, also has a small bar or the other aide of the restaurant. Choice of one meat out of 5-6 types and two sides for cheap - HARD TO BEAT & HARD TO FIND IN TH AREA unless you want Texas Roadhouse.
Fantastic BBQ in the little heart of Winthrop. Also have a nice selection of craft beers and are invthe process of expanding the bar and dining area.
Great food! Best BBQ around in my opinion. Large portions without the high cost.
Beer on tap, Foods tasty. Great local place to hide away or be joined by friends. Right near the beach!
Delicious food and great service. The fried catfish was amazing.
Great BBQ Restaurant. Good ribs
Good BBQ and a great selection of sides. A cozy place with limited seating. Service staff was very friendly.
Amazing
Great food. Definitely worth coming to. Their BBQ is delicious.
I've never had BBQ in the south, which may make this review entirely pointless in the eyes of some. However I've eaten at many of New England's options, and I've probably eaten the entire menu of more than a few. First: The food rocks. I've never been disappointed, if not downright giddy by the food. For sides, be sure to try the collard greens (so sweet!) and chili mac n cheese. Second: The sauces. The sweet is sweet, and the hot is damn. Nice burn without being intolerable. Just go easy there rook. Third: The people. The guys who work there are friendly, easy-going, happy people. That makes a big improvement, even when the food is as good as it is. And they always have some good music playing.
Great bbq and craft beers. Lively crowd.
Good food, good service! Welcoming environment.
Awesome food awesome service awesome prices. Worth a drive for sure.
This place is a hidden gem! Delicious burnt ends, awesome Mac and cheese and great beer selection. Sat at the bar and the bartender was very friendly.
A cozy spot in the downtoen Winthrop area. It has a really neat funky atmosphere with consistently great music playing. Their barbeque is definitely some of the best I've had in the greater Boston area. They have a nice variety of sauces to accompany your meats. The wings are great as well! The staff was friendly and helpful offering good recommendations and even gave us a free plate of frued pickles that i will definitely odder again. The beer selection is small but frequently rotating. by far the best variety in the area! They also had some great whiskeys to pick from!
New management/people stay away
Great bartenders/staff and above average food.
Really bad customer service with ignorant staff.
My favorite place ever
Great meat in the heart of tiny Winthrop. I've been a fan for a while now, and urge you to come sample the excellent food and friendly atmosphere.
Great Barbecue and even better sides! Excellent Open Mic nights on Mondays.
Really dry, tough over seasoned annihilated ribs. The brisket was beyond dry. The duck was inedible. go here for good beer, not the food. This restaurant is so far from good barbecue its ridiculous. 1/5
Amazing renovation, now have live bands. A must visit. Get the ribs.
Recent vist, food was horrible. Not what it used to be.
The Food is Awesome! Great upbeat music and Environment. I will definitely be visiting that Establishment again.
A great find and worth the drive from wherever you are in Boston. Fast service. BBQ was excellent.
Much better than ever.
I lived in the south for quite a while so I had high expectations...
Great bbq and the chaps behind the bar were great.
Not worth the money. Food was undercooked. Mashed potatoes tasted like spoiled milk. The waiter was not the most pleasant, he just seemed annoyed and rarely came around. We sat waiting quite a bit for it being pretty slow.
Great atmosphere, and amazing food. Try the fried pickles
Our favorites are the brisket and the chicken wings.
Nice restaurant in Winthrop. Food was 50/50. Burnt ends and pulled pork were excellent. Chicken was a little on the dry side. The sides were excellent. Had the spicy mac and cheese and collard greens. Will definitely visit again, but would get something besides the chicken.
Great food! Went for brunch on a sunday before driving back to NYC. The folks were very accommodating and friendly. Prices are very reasonable. Must try their wings despite what you order, they are so good... we will be back soon.
So good it should be illegal. But it's not. So I'll keep going. Yum!
It's funny... the website says open til midnight but the kitchen closes at 9pm. Not very helpful to a first time possible diner!
Probably my favorite barbecue in the state. Love the bar, the vibe, the service. Excellent Texas style brisket and ribs.
Amazing, pulled chicken rib, a variety of sauces... great company. Great service
The staff was so funny. I had a great time. The youthful crowd was a hilarious distraction from my own drunken antics. Reminded me of me. Winthrop is a wonderful coastal town and this place helped remind me of the history of it all. Want some great comfort food this is the place for you.
Great food. We were truly surprised by it. Creative offering for sides that were incredible. Really good drink selections. The service could have been a little bit better, but we did arrive on a Saturday night and had to wait 30 minutes for a table, but they gave us a menu and offered us a seat at the bar whole we waited. So, they were busy and we didn't see much of our waiter, but once the food arrived, we weren't all that concerned about it.
Great food. Real authentic BBQ in large portions. The drinks really make this place. They have all the standard beers and whiskeys, but the cocktail list is divinely inspired. Seriously! The bartenders infuse their own spirits with inventive combinations like smoked gin or vanilla tequila.
They are open till midnight, we drove 35 mins to get here (their chicken wings are great), arriving at 9:01 pm and the told us that kitchen stop working at 9pm, we asked if we can have at least some wings and they say no. Very dissappointing. If you want to work with public you must have some flexibility and honestly 1min of flexibility is not even flexibility, it's just being professional!!
Great food, great selection. The owner is very, very community involved and hosts AWESOME events!! Also, the food is really good. They have things like deep fried ribs and Winter Cider. The bartenders also know what to recommend.
Great bbq joint. Cool hidden gem in Winthrop.
Great place... Good food, good people, good vibes...
Ok place.I wish i liked it more.I would not go back.
The wings were incredible and the fries were also amazing. Smoked chicken was good, but the breast meat my friend had was waaaay dry. The brisket ends were delicious, but the sliced brisket was just dry. Good selection of sauces though.
There were 10 to 15 tables and only one person attending all of them and he still made me feel like i was the only one always smile my food was on point and good.. If im ever in boston again ill make sure i goback.. Good job guys
I am working here
Super barbeque place. Definitely a local place. Not much seating currently ( late 2018), but they are expanding into adjoining space. Staff is super friendly and super cool, and the food - just super. Juicy, excellent sauces and rubs, just awesome.
Carrigan was the best and the food was a close second. Definitely going back!!!
Mmmmmm I got a combo plate and a PBR, it was my birthday dinner, how bout dat!!
My new favorite spot in Winthrop!
Wow! A hidden gem! The food here is amazing!!
Worst service at a bar in the universe can be found here! I’ve been several times with mediocre service but my most recent trip topped the charts. Waited at least 10 minutes after sitting at the bar with zero notion or any recognition from the bartender. It got to the point where a manager had to asked if we had been served yet... Although the recent upgrades are nice, the staff should update their service game. Won’t be back.
I love it here! It's from people who were involved in East Coast Grille so the food is obviously amazing!! It's a tiny hole in the wall but one of my favorite places to eat in MA.
Poor food, wait staff appithetif.
Fried pickle heaven!! Pulled pork is amazing!! Great staff!
Pretty blown away with this place, I couldn't tell if we just ate at a BBQ joint or a tapas joint. To be fair we didn't order any BBQ but plenty of others did and it smelled amazing. Our meals were excellent, we had a Papusa, shrimp Rangoons salmon salad-all.the current specials of the day. I want to go back, real friendly service and atmosphere, what a cool spot.
Great food. Great staff. Ask for Jess. She's awesome!
AWESOME place for BBQ! They smoke their meats in house, and their staff are VERY friendly. Everything sold there is home made, and it shows! A lot of care goes into their food. I can't recommend this place enough!
Tried them for the first time. Loved their brisket, not smokiest I've had, but quite good. Also had the burnt ends, they were very good.
Awesome food, great beer list. The dry rub bbq chicken was unbelievable
First and last visit to this saloon. My senses were awakened to the smell of smoked wood, great country music and interesting paintings to view. Unfortunately the service was beyond poor and the food was OK. I hope they get their act together.
Amazing, original, creative and delicious menu items as well as all-time Southern BBQ favorites! Handcrafted beverages, craft beers, and unforgettable hospitality!
Best chilli I ever had. I make the best chilli so it was quite amazing tasting something that is even better than my own. The fried chicken was great too. Corn bread. And the chicken wings. Al off it amazing. And cheap. I would come here again and refer anyone friends and family to this great local Winthrop bbq joint
Great place great food
I didn't eat in the restaurant, but I did like the design and the employees were nice. The food was reasonably priced and really good. If I'm ever in the area again, I'd come back.
I was very happy to get a BBQ joint in Winthrop and Blackstrap BBQ does not disappoint. Its a VERY small dining room, maybe three tables and some window seating. All the walls are blackboard with the menu written on them. My first time I ordered food to go so I did not sit in the dining area. We ordered two three meat dinners with the Shredded BBQ Chicken, Carolina Style Pork and the Texas Brisket. One with sweet sauce and one with hot. All the meats were amazing! The hot sauce had a mild zing to it yet tasty, my favorite. All the sides were a little small but very good. I was very happy to find Fried Pickles on the menu. They are yummy with a little kick to them. I loved them. Each dinner came with a huge hunk of Corn Bread. I liked it, it reminded me of an Irish soda bread, a flavor my wife was not to thrilled with. Ill be going back again soon! If they get a liquor license I don't think Ill ever leave. :) Great to see "Downtown" Winthrop getting some cool little restaurants!
Favorite north shore bbq.
Delicious barbeque, great drinks, great inside!
Great owner , place is expanding and can only get even better.
Sorry, I liked the quieter original space. A big bar, TV's, loud music, somewhat crowded seating do not appeal to me. Add a menu with smallish print that is hard to read in the dimness and I realize that I am not the target audience for this place. Pleased to report that the food was quite toothsome. Maybe takeout next time.
This is one of my favorite places in Winthrop. It has that Portland, Maine feel to it with lots of great beers and barbecue. Expanded bar just opened up and it is a great place to hang out.
I ordered the three meat two sides special. I asked for the chicken and Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese was wonderful. The grilled chicken was burnt. I mean burnt I could not eat it.,
Good food and great price for BBQ in this area. Portions are good for sharing or hungry people.
