Southgate is a cozy, casual breakfast and lunch spot in downtown Bath. It's not large but the folks who run it provide great service and their menu is full of good breakfast and classic diner options. If you like sausage gravy on biscuits, then you must try theirs! The fish stew is also excellent when available.

Since this place has not opened yet I will give it 3 stars and see how it goes from there. Opens May 7th 2018 Update: 1/12/19 Have been here several times and the food is good and the prices are good too. They pulled a scam on me a couple of times by charging me way more than the specials listed on the board said. Getting used to the new register was the answer. I caught the trick, they have two different corn beef hashes, the homemade one costs a lot more and they add it and don't tell you about it until the bill comes hoping you will miss it.

Southgate has been nothing short of the best budget diner in town for many years now, and obviously my favorite. I'm always satisifed whether it be the bang for your buck exceptional plate sizing, the service from any of the wonderful waitstaff, or just the comfortable atmosphere. Considering I've seen the staff themselves eat there on their days off and the Bath PD/FD/EMS eat there regularly, it's safe to say Southgate knows what they're doing. Southgate also offers a food challenge called The Frigate Challenge, consisting of a 12 egg omelet including green peppers, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, sausage, bacon, ham, and cheese, a side of meat, a side of potatoes, and a side of toast. If you're more into the healthy side of things, there are many options for vegetarians and gluten-free folks too! Forever a loyal and frequent customer.

Found this place while looking to eat lunch before we went to the Maine Maritime Museum down the street. It's an old diner with very little seating so we had to wait awhile, but we were there during lunch and it's across the street from the Iron Works so I'm sure a lot of their business comes from there. They have specials on the board, and I had fish and chips (haddock) which was quite delicious, and my husband had the chicken nuggets which looked exactly like the haddock, same breading. All in all, it was typical diner fare for a good price.

If you're in Bath, ME, and need to replenish the human tank, stop in and fill 'er up!

Very home town in the heart of Bath, the staff are willing to get you what you need. The breakfast is better than making it yourself, I recommend the blueberry pancakes and real syrup, heavenly. The staff continued to go by with a pot coffee ready. That is a very important part of my morning and what made it better was the friendly people.

I stopped in after doing the walking homes tour in the area. Seating is tight but adequate. Menu selections were varied. I ordered the corned hash. It was excellent. Pleasant staff. I almost missed the shop because outside of the yellow on the facade, the signage didn't stand out from the surroundings. Definitely worth seeking out.

Great family diner. Diner food, local favorite, great prices, large portions. A gem hidden away from the main street is sure to please the most basic need--good food. Update Saddened to hear 3 days later that the building caught fire and is reported as a total loss. We were there earlier that same day. Photo shows the inside that day.

Wonderful! I love Southgate! Whenever we are in Bath, Southgate is a must. Eggs Benedict are perfect. We usually come more than once and then I get blueberry pancakes. My husband sometimes orders the homemade hash two days in a row. Grandkids love the Mickey Mouse pancakes. Along with the great food, the service is fast and friendly! They say it's the best breakfast in town, and that's true!
